RESUMO

Radiographic findings of free air in the peritoneal cavity secondary to perforation of a acutely inflamed appendix are extremely rare. It accounts for about 0-7% of all patients with pneumoperitoneum. We report on a 58-years-old Brazilian Amazon woman presenting a 1- week history of abdominal pain, tenderness and distension associated with asthenia and without passage of stool or gas. Abdominal percussion revealed a tympanic sound located on the right hypocondrium. Plain chest radiography revealed a large amount of free air beneath the right leaf of the diaphram. The patient was taken immediately to the operation room and, during surgery, a gangrenous appendix with an apex perforation was verified. Appendectomy was performed as routinely. The patient evolved with pneumonia and septic shock that responded well to intravenous antibiotics and vasoactive drugs. She was discharged to home on the twenty-first post-operative day in good clinical conditions. This case highlights that perforated acute appendicitis is rarely associated with pneumoperitoneum, but it must be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting right abdominal pain and free intraperitoneal air.

RESUMO

AIMS: To evaluate the ability of Streptomyces sp. (strain ASBV-1) to restrict aflatoxin accumulation in peanut grains. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the control of many phytopathogenic fungi the Streptomyces sp. ASBV-1 strain showed promise. An inhibitory test using this strain and A. parasiticus was conducted in peanut grains to evaluate the effects of this interaction on spore viability and aflatoxin accumulation. In some treatments the Streptomyces sp ASBV-1 strain reduced the viability of A. parasiticus spores by c. 85%, and inhibited aflatoxin accumulation in peanut grains. The values of these reductions ranged from 63 to 98% and from 67% to 96% for aflatoxins B(1) and G(1), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: It was demonstrated that Streptomyces sp. ASBV-1 is able to colonize peanut grains and thus inhibit the spore viability of A. parasiticus, as well as reducing aflatoxin production. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The positive finding for aflatoxin accumulation reduction in peanut grains seems promising and suggests a wider use of this actinobacteria in biological control programmes.

RESUMO

A 3',3'-di-(gamma,gamma-dimethylallyl)-2',4'-di-oxo-enolchalcone (tunicatachalcone) and five known C-prenylflavonoids were isolated and/or identified from the roots of Tephrosia tunicata. Their structures were established by spectral methods and chemical transformation.

RESUMO

Total mercury concentrations were measured in dorsal muscle tissue of two edible fish species, Prochilodus scrofa 'curimba' and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans 'pintado', respectively detritivorous and carnivorous. Fish species were sampled monthly between February 1993 and January 1994 and bimonthly between April 1994 and February 1995 in three subsystems of Paraná river' system (Ivinhema River/Lake Patos; Baía River/Lake Guaraná and Paraná River/Cortado Channel), between Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Total mercury was determined by HNO3/H2SO4/V2O5 digestion, SnCl2 reduction, and vapour generation method analysis (CGCH 900), adapted to Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (CGAA 7000 ABC). The mean mercury concentrations varied from 82.0 to 310.5 ng g(-1) and from 68 to 294.4 ng g(-1) in 'curimbas' and 'pintados', respectively. Mercury level increases in sexually mature 'curimbas'. Mercury values detected do not exceed the prevailing criteria for issuance of fish consumption advisories (< 500 ng g(-1)).
