The feasibility of implementing digital predistortion for next-generation wireless communication is faced with a dilemma due to the ever-increasing demand for faster data rates. This causes the utilized bandwidth to increase significantly, as seen in the 5G NR standard in which bandwidths as high as 400 MHz are utilized. Hence, the development of new predistortion techniques in which the forward and feedback paths operate at lower sampling rates is of utmost importance to realize efficient and practical predistortion solutions. In this work, a novel predistortion technique is presented by which the predistortion is divided between the digital and analog domains. The predistorter is composed of a memoryless AM/AM gain function that is implementable in the analog domain, and a nonlinear model with memory effects in the digital domain to relax the sampling rate requirements on both the forward and feedback paths. Experimental validation was carried out with a 20 MHz and a 40 MHz 5G signal, and the results indicate minimal linearization degradation with a sampling rate reduction of 50% and 30%, respectively. This sampling rate reduction is concurrently applied in the digital-to-analog converter of the forward path and the analog-to-digital converter of the feedback path.

The spectrum allocation in any auctioned wireless service primarily depends upon the necessity and the usage of licensed primary users (PUs) of a certain band of frequencies. These frequencies are utilized by the PUs as per their needs and requirements. When the allocated spectrum is not being utilized in the full efficient manner, the unused spectrum is treated by the PUs as white space without believing much in the concept of spectrum scarcity. There are techniques invented and incorporated by many researchers, such as cognitive radio technology, which involves software-defined radio with reconfigurable antennas tuned to particular frequencies at different times. Cognitive radio (CR) technology realizes the logic of the utility factor of the PUs and the requirements of the secondary users (SU) who are in queue to utilize the unused spectrum, which is the white space. The CR technology is enriched with different frequency allocation engines and with different strategies in different parts of the world, complying with the regulatory standards of the FCC and ITU. Based on the frequency allocation made globally, the existing CR technology understands the nuances of static and dynamic spectrum allocation and also embraces the intelligence in time allocation by scheduling the SUs whenever the PUs are not using the spectrum, and when the PUs pitch in the SUs have to leave the band without time. This paper identifies a few of the research gaps existing in the earlier literature. The behavioral aspects of the PUs and SUs have been analyzed for a period of 90 days with some specific spectrum ranges of usage in India. The communal habits of utilizing the spectrum, not utilizing the spectrum as white space, different time zones, the requisites of the SUs, the necessity of the applications, and the improvement of the utility factor of the entire spectrum have been considered along with static and dynamic spectrum usage, the development of the spectrum policy engine aligned with cooperative and opportunistic spectrum sensing, and access techniques indulging in artificial intelligence (AI). This will lead to fine-tuning the PU and SU channel mapping without being hindered by predefined policies. We identify the cognitive radio transmitter and receiver parameters, and resort to the same in a proposed channel adaption algorithm. We also analyze the white spaces offered by spectrum ranges of VHF, GSM-900, and GSM-1800 by a real-time survey with a spectrum analyzer. The identified parameters and white spaces are mapped with the help of a swotting algorithm. A sample policy has been stated for ISM band 2.4 GHz where such policies can be excited in a policy server. The policy engine is suggested to be configured over the 5G CORE spectrum management function.

Fifth-generation (5G) technology is anticipated to allow a slew of novel applications across a variety of industries. The wireless communication of the 5G and Beyond-5G (B5G) networks will accommodate a wide variety of services and user expectations, including intense end-user connectivity, sub-1 ms delay, and a transmission rate of 100 Gbps. Network slicing is envisioned as an appropriate technique that can meet these disparate requirements. The intrinsic qualities of a blockchain, which has lately acquired prominence, mean that it is critical for the 5G network and B5G networks. In particular, the incorporation of blockchain technology into B5G enables the network to effectively monitor and control resource utilization and sharing. Using blockchain technology, a network-slicing architecture referred to as the Blockchain Consensus Framework is introduced that allows resource providers to dynamically contract resources, especially the radio access network (RAN) schedule, to guarantee that their end-to-end services are effortlessly executed. The core of our methodology is comprehensive service procurement, which offers the fine-grained adaptive allocation of resources through a blockchain-based consensus mechanism. Our objective is to have Primary User-Secondary User (PU-SU) interactions with a variety of services, while minimizing the operation and maintenance costs of the 5G service providers. A Blockchain-Enabled Network Slicing Model (BENS), which is a learning-based algorithm, is incorporated to handle the spectrum resource allocation in a sophisticate manner. The performance and inferences of the proposed work are analyzed in detail.

The roles of emergency responders are challenging and often physically demanding, so it is essential that their duties are performed safely and effectively. In this article, we address real-time bio-signal sensor monitoring for responders in disaster scenarios. In particular, we propose the integration of a set of health monitoring sensors suitable for detecting stress, anxiety and physical fatigue in an Internet of Cooperative Agents architecture for search and rescue (SAR) missions (SAR-IoCA), which allows remote control and communication between human and robotic agents and the mission control center. With this purpose, we performed proof-of-concept experiments with a bio-signal sensor suite worn by firefighters in two high-fidelity SAR exercises. Moreover, we conducted a survey, distributed to end-users through the Fire Brigade consortium of the Provincial Council of Málaga, in order to analyze the firefighters' opinion about biological signals monitoring while on duty. As a result of this methodology, we propose a wearable sensor suite design with the aim of providing some easy-to-wear integrated-sensor garments, which are suitable for emergency worker activity. The article offers discussion of user acceptance, performance results and learned lessons.

The rapid development of 5G network technology has gained much popularity as well as concerns about its adverse effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of 4.9 GHz (one of working frequencies of 5G communication) radiofrequency (RF) field on emotional behaviours and spatial memory in adult male mice. Open field test (OFT), tail suspension test (TST) and Y maze were used to evaluate anxiety, depression-like behaviour and spatial memory ability, respectively. It was found that the anxiety-like behaviour and spatial memory ability of mice did not change, but the depression-like behaviour was induced in mice after 4.9 GHz RF exposure. In addition, the number of neurons significantly reduced and the level of pyroptosis obviously increased in amygdala rather than hippocampus. These results suggested that 4.9 GHz RF exposure could induce depression-like behaviour, which might be associated with the neuronal pyroptosis in amygdala.

Cloud robotics and advanced communications can foster a step-change in cooperative robots and hybrid wireless sensor networks (H-WSN) for demanding environments (e.g., disaster response, mining, demolition, and nuclear sites) by enabling the timely sharing of data and computational resources between robot and human teams. However, the operational complexity of such multi-agent systems requires defining effective architectures, coping with implementation details, and testing in realistic deployments. This article proposes X-IoCA, an Internet of robotic things (IoRT) and communication architecture consisting of a hybrid and heterogeneous network of wireless transceivers (H2WTN), based on LoRa and BLE technologies, and a robot operating system (ROS) network. The IoRT is connected to a feedback information system (FIS) distributed among multi-access edge computing (MEC) centers. Furthermore, we present SAR-IoCA, an implementation of the architecture for search and rescue (SAR) integrated into a 5G network. The FIS for this application consists of an SAR-FIS (including a path planner for UGVs considering risks detected by a LoRa H-WSN) and an ROS-FIS (for real-time monitoring and processing of information published throughout the ROS network). Moreover, we discuss lessons learned from using SAR-IoCA in a realistic exercise where three UGVs, a UAV, and responders collaborated to rescue victims from a tunnel accessible through rough terrain.

Single-sideband (SSB) modulation through Hilbert transformation has successfully transmitted data using only half the bandwidth of the traditional scheme for the same amount of contained information. Toward this end, the four single-sideband (4-SSB) approach for high order modulation is a promising approach for the next-generation communications by applying soft-input soft-output (SISO) equalizer algorithms over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). However, OFDM is challenging for realizing the feasible 5G communications, compared to the emerging techniques, e.g., non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), orthogonal multiple access (OMA) or multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). Since the 4-SSB is an orthogonal modulation which was successfully applied over the traditional OFDM, in this article, we propose a novel 4-SSB modulation scheme over OFDM Guard Interval (GI) and massive MIMO. Besides the carrier signal, from the receiver side, we also apply the shadow equalizer algorithm in the uncoded and coded environment using turbo codes to achieve the 4-SSB with high efficiency from low complexity and energy consumption for 5G. The evaluation results validate that our system consumes lower energy due to low complexity gained from same number of iterations without the heavy decoding as of the 4-SSB SISO based on the turbo equalizer. In addition, the 4-SSB over the OFDM GI achieves the best performance among the relevant approaches conducted in 4-SSB. The proposal then acts as a practical communication system designed to solve the inter-symbol interference (ISI) induced by additional Hilbert transform in the wireless environment toward fifth generation (5G), given that turbo code is considered as a potential channel coding scheme for 5G radio specification.

The millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum is one of the important propositions of 5G mobile networks due to its ability to accommodate massive traffic demands and an ever-increasing number of wireless devices. The beam-formed directional technique overcomes the propagation and path loss challenges of mmWave high frequencies. Though the directional convergence is expected to unleash new possibilities, it cannot be implemented with conventional power-saving solutions optimized over omnidirectional communications. Paging broadcast, for users in Idle Discontinuous Reception (IDRX) mode for energy saving, is one such necessary function in a wireless communication that needs modification in highly directional beam-based transmissions. Due to the limited spatial coverage of directional beams, the paging transmission takes place over multiple beams, which increases the paging resource overheads of the network substantially. In this article, we present a novel paging mechanism for the directional air interface in mmWave-enabled 5G communications. Numerical analysis of the proposed Partitioned UE ID-based Directional Paging (PIDP) mechanism reduces the paging resource overheads of the network, resulting in a 15 % gain in power savings compared to directional paging transmission without the UE ID partition.

The fifth generation (5G) network is currently being worldwide spread out, raising questions about the potential impact of this new technology, particularly on immature organisms. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of daily 5G electromagnetic field (EMF) perinatal exposure on the neurodevelopment of rats. The exposure level was set to the limit of whole-body public exposure defined by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. The mother rat specific absorption rate (SAR) was 0.07 W/kg for 22 h/day at 3500 MHz continuous wave from gestational day (GD) 8 to post-natal day (PND) 21. Clinical observations were performed on weight, length, sex ratio, number of pups per litter, and number of stillborn in sham and EMF-exposed groups (n = 7). The age of pinna ear detachment, incisor eruption, and eye opening were recorded. Behavior was assessed on righting, gripping, and negative geotaxis reflexes at PND 3 or 7 and on stereotyped and horizontal movements in the open field at PND 43. Our results indicated that both male and female pups showed delayed incisor eruption in the EMF-exposed group compared to the sham group (+ 1 day). Regarding activity in the open field, adolescent females showed less stereotyped movements (- 70%), while adolescent males showed more stereotyped movements (+ 50%) compared to the sham-exposed adolescent rats. Thus, the present study suggested that perinatal exposure to 5G at SAR level below reglementary threshold led to perturbations in the descendants seen in juveniles and adolescents.

This paper presents the generation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex waves with mode +1 using dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) array. The proposed antenna was designed and fabricated using FR-4 substrate to generate OAM mode +1 at 3.56 GHz (5G new radio band). The proposed antenna consists of 2 × 2 rectangular DRA array, a feeding network, and four cross slots etched on the ground plane. The proposed antenna succeeded in generating OAM waves; this was confirmed by the measured radiation pattern (2D polar form), simulated phase distribution, and intensity distribution. Moreover, mode purity analysis was carried out to verify the generation of OAM mode +1, and the purity obtained was 53.87%. The antenna operates from 3.2 to 3.66 GHz with a maximum gain of 7.3 dBi. Compared with previous designs, this proposed antenna is low-profile and easy to fabricate. In addition, the proposed antenna has a compact structure, wide bandwidth, high gain, and low losses, thus meeting the requirements of 5G NR applications.

Radio frequency (RF) filters with multiple passbands can meet the needs of miniaturization and integration for 5G communications. This paper reports a dual-mode Lamb wave resonator (DLWR) and a dual-passband filter based on DLWRs. The DLWR consists of a piezoelectric film and two interdigital electrode (IDT) arrays with different thicknesses, which leads to the coexistence of two main modes in the resonator. The resonance frequencies of the two modes can be adjusted separately by changing the thicknesses of the IDTs, which greatly satisfies the requirements of the dual-passband filter. Four DLWRs with different electrode configurations are designed, and the influences of the periodic length and thicknesses of the IDTs on the performance of the DLWR are studied. When the thickness of the piezoelectric layer is 0.75 µm and the two thicknesses of the IDTs are 0.1 µm and 0.3 µm, the resonance frequency of the second main mode is 1.27 GHz higher than the resonance frequency of the first main mode in the DLWR. Furthermore, a dual-passband filter based on the proposed DLWRs is demonstrated with an insertion loss less than 1 dB and a band rejection of about 15 dB. Moreover, two passbands at 2.45 GHz and 3.88 GHz with bandwidths of 66 MHz and 112 MHz, respectively, are achieved. The presented DLWR shows a potential application that can be used to obtain RF filters with adjustable dual passbands.
