RESUMO

PURPOSE: ABILHAND-Kids is a structured parent report that assesses manual ability in activities of daily living in children with cerebral palsy, and also brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI). This study investigated the validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency of the ABILHAND-Kids in children with BPBI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ABILHAND-Kids was administered to parents of 119 children with BPBI between 6 and 15 years for validity and internal consistency, also 92 parents were re-interviewed after two weeks to establish test-retest reliability. Its concurrent validity was examined by correlating scores on the ABILHAND-Kids with Active Movement Scale-Total Score. RESULTS: ABILHAND-Kids were strongly correlated with AMS-Total score (p < 0.001, r = 0.87) ABILHAND-Kids test-retest reliability was excellent (ICC: 0.93, %95 CI: 0.90-0.95). The internal consistency for the total score of ABILHAND-Kids was excellent (alpha = 0.94). For 20 items, item-total correlations were adequate (corrected item-total correlations, 0.27-0.85), one item which was "switching on a bedside lamb" had no adequate correlation (corrected item-total correlations, 0.011). The ABILHAND-Kids score showed a statistically significant difference between the Narakas types (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The ABILHAND-Kids has excellent reliability and strong validity for measuring manual ability or bimanual performance in activities of daily living in children with BPBI.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study is to develop a Turkish version of the ABILHAND-Kids Survey, which evaluates upper extremity function in children with cerebral palsy (CP), and to carry out a validity and reliability study of the survey for Turkish CP patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between November 2016 and March 2017, a total of 109 pediatric CP patients (62 males, 47 females; mean age 9.3±2.9 years; range, 6 to 15 years) followed in our outpatient clinic were included. The demographic characteristics and type of CP of the patients were recorded. A functional evaluation was made using the ABILHAND-Kids and Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) surveys. The reliability of the surveys was tested based on internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and test-retest (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]) methods. The validity of the approach was evaluated using converted scores from an ABILHAND-Kids Rasch analysis and a correlation of the MACS levels. RESULTS: The ICC value for the test/retest reliability was 0.98 and internal consistency was 0.94. A strong negative correlation was found between the Turkish version of the ABILHAND-Kids and MACS surveys (r=-0.849; p<0.001). A Rasch analysis indicated good item fit, unidimensionality, and model fit. CONCLUSION: The Turkish version of the ABILHAND-Kids survey is a reliable and valid scale for the assessment of manual ability in Turkish children with CP.

RESUMO

Aim: To develop a Persian version of ABILHAND-Kids and to determine its reliability and validity in Persian-speaking children with cerebral palsy (CP).Method: The ABILHAND-Kids questionnaire was translated into Persian language and cross-culturally adapted following guidelines. The Persian ABILHAND-Kids was administered to 50 parents of CP children. Among the 50 parents of CP children, 30 of them participated in a test-retest reliability phase. Fifty parents of healthy children participated for discriminative validity. Results: The Rasch analysis indicated the unidimensionality, reliability, and global invariance of the Persian ABILHAND-Kids. The internal consistency reliability was high (Cronbach's alpha = 0.96). Floor and ceiling effects were insignificant (4%). The Intraclass Correlation Coefficients of test-retest reliability were 0.96 and 0.70 for item difficulties and children's measures, respectively. The standard error of measurement and smallest detectable change for CP measure were 11.21 and 31.07%, respectively. The discriminative validity of the Persian ABILHAND-Kids was demonstrated by statistically significant lower ABILHAND-Kids measures in CP children than in healthy children (p < 0.001). Cross-cultural validity between the Persian and original version was established for 19 out of the 21 ABILHAND-Kids items.Interpretation: The Persian ABILHAND-Kids questionnaire is reliable and valid for assessing manual ability in Persian speaking children with CP.Implications for rehabilitationThe Persian version of ABILHAND-Kids is developed and presented as a valid and reliable instrument for use by Persian-speaking clinicians and researchers. It is now possible for the Persian-speaking researchers to participate in international investigations and to compare Persian data with those from other countries.

RESUMO

This study was performed to examine the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of ABILHAND-Kids questionnaire which assesses manual functions of children with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs). A cross sectional survey study design and Rasch analysis were used to assess the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of scale. Ninety-three children with different neuromuscular disorders and their parents were included in the study. The scale was applied to the parents with face-to-face interview twice; on their first visit and after an interval of 15 days. The test-retest reliability was assessed with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and internal consistency of the multi-item subscales by calculating Cronbach alpha values. Brooke Upper Extremity Functional Classification (BUEFC) and Wee-Functional Independency Measurement (Wee-FIM) were correlated to determine the construct validity. The ICC value for the test/retest reliability was 0.94. The internal consistency was 0.81. Floor (1.1%) and ceiling (11.8%) effects were not significant. There were moderate correlations between the Turkish version of ABILHAND-Kids and Wee-FIM (0.67) and BUEFC (-0.37). Rasch analysis indicated good item fit, unidimensionality, and model fit. The Turkish version of ABILHAND-Kids questionnaire was found to be a reliable and valid scale for the assessment of the manual ability of children with NMDs.
