RESUMO

Improved characterization of ambient PM2.5 mass concentration and chemical speciation is a topic of interest in air quality and climate sciences. Over the past decades, considerable efforts have been made to improve ground-level PM2.5 using remotely sensed data. Here we present two new approaches for estimating atmospheric PM2.5 and chemical composition based on the High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL)-retrieved aerosol extinction values and types and Creating Aerosol Types from Chemistry (CATCH)-derived aerosol chemical composition. The first methodology (CMAQ-HSRL-CH) improves EPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) predictions by applying variable scaling factors derived using remotely-sensed information about aerosol vertical distribution and types and the CATCH algorithm. The second methodology (HSRL-CH) does not require regional model runs and can provide atmospheric PM2.5 mass concentration and chemical speciation using only the remotely sensed data and the CATCH algorithm. The resulting PM2.5 concentrations and chemical speciation derived for NASA DISCOVER-AQ (Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from COlumn and VERtically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality) Baltimore-Washington, D.C. Corridor (BWC) Campaign (2011) are compared to surface measurements from EPA's Air Quality Systems (AQS) network. The analysis shows that the CMAQ-HSRL-CH method leads to considerable improvement of CMAQ's predicted PM2.5 concentrations (R2 value increased from 0.37 to 0.63, the root mean square error (RMSE) was reduced from 11.9 to 7.2 µg m-3, and the normalized mean bias (NMB) was lowered from -46.0 to 4.6%). The HSRL-CH method showed statistics (R2=0.75, RMSE=8.6 µgm-3, and NMB=24.0%), which were better than the CMAQ prediction of PM2.5 alone and analogous to CMAQ-HSRL-CH. In addition to mass concentration, HSRL-CH can also provide aerosol chemical composition without specific model simulations. We expect that the HSRL-CH method will be able to make reliable estimates of PM2.5 concentration and chemical composition where HSRL data are available.

Quinone compounds could significantly accelerate anaerobic biotransformation of refractory pollutants. However, the effect of quinone compounds application on the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the bio-treatment of these pollutants-containing wastewater is not available. In this study, the catalytic performance of anthraquinone-2-sulfonate immobilized on polyurethane foam (AQS-PUF), changes of ARGs, mobile gene elements (MGEs) and microbial community structure attached on AQS-PUF and PUF in the up-flow anaerobic bioreactors were investigated. The results showed that AQS-PUF could significantly accelerate the decolorization of azo dye RR X-3B. Meanwhile, metagenomics analysis showed that the total absolute abundance of ARGs increased in the presence of the immobilized AQS. Among ARGs, the number of the efflux pump-encoding ARGs in the biofilm of AQS-PUF accounted for 35.7% of the total ARGs, which was slightly higher than that of PUF (32.1%) due to the presence of the immobilized AQS. The relative abundances of ARGs conferring resistance to MLS (macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin), tetracycline and sulfonamide, which were deeply concerned, reduced 10%, 21.7% and 7.3% in the presence of the immobilized AQS, respectively. Moreover, the immobilized AQS resulted in the decreased relative abundance of plasmids, transposons and class I integrons. Among the detected 31 ARG subtypes located in MGEs, the relative abundances of only lnuF, msrE and mphD in the biofilm of AQS-PUF were over 2-fold higher compared with those in the biofilm of PUF. However, the three ARGs and their host Gammaproteobacteria was not dominant in microbial community. The relative abundances of more ARGs including MLS (lnuB and EreA), tetracycline (tetH) resistance genes located in MGEs decreased, which was attributed to the decreased relative abundance of their hosts. These studies showed that the addition of the immobilized AQS (around 0.25 mM) had a beneficial effect on reducing the spread of ARGs during dyeing wastewater bio-treatment.

A novel pigmented bacterium, initially identified as 11E, was isolated from a site historically known to have various iron-related ores. Phylogenetic analysis of this bacterial strain showed that it belongs to Serratia marcescens. This pigmented S. marcescens 11E cultured individually with glucose, acetate, and glycerol as electron donors along with the soluble electron acceptor iron (Fe) (III) citrate offered a large reduction extent (45.3 %, 31.4 %, and 13.5 %, respectively). On the other hand, when iron oxide (Fe2O3) is used as electron acceptor, the pigmented strain produced a null reduction extent. Surprisingly, the absence of prodigiosin on the bacterial surface (non-pigmented strain) resulted in a large reduction extent of the non-soluble iron form (20-49%). All these extents were comparable and, in some cases, superior to those presented in the literature. Additionally, in the present study, it was found that anthraquinone sulfonate (AQS) stimulated Fe(III) reduction of soluble and non-soluble Fe species only with pigmented S. marcescens. In contrast, in the culture media with the non-pigmented strain, the presence of AQS did not stimulate the Fe(III) reduction. These results suggest that the pigmented phenotype of S. marcescens 11E may perform non-soluble Fe(III) reduction by electron shuttling. In contrast, for the non-pigmented phenotype of this bacterium, non-soluble Fe(III) reduction seems to proceed by direct contact. Our study demonstrates that this bacterium may be used in bioreduction process of heavy metals or as a biocatalyst in bioelectrochemical devices.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that produces numerous exoproducts during infection that help it evade the host immune system and procure nutrients from the host environment. Among these products are a family of secreted 2-alkyl-4(1H)-quinolone metabolites (AQs), which exhibit a range of biological activities. Here, we describe the validation of a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based method for quantifying multiple AQ congeners in complex biological matrices. The assay was validated for selectivity, sensitivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, carryover, dilution integrity, recovery, matrix effects, and various aspects of stability (freeze-thaw, bench-top, long-term storage, and autosampler/post-preparative). Using authentic standards for 6 distinct AQ congeners, we report accurate quantitation within a linear range between 25 and 1000 nmol/L for all of the validated AQ standards. This method was successfully applied to quantify AQ concentrations in P. aeruginosa cell culture and in the lungs of mice infected with P. aeruginosa. Further, we confirmed the presence of unsaturated forms of several AQ congeners in cell culture. Graphical abstract.

BACKGROUND: Insecure attachment in infancy is associated with a range of later socioemotional problems; therefore, it is important to identify at-risk children so that support can be provided. However, there are currently no well-validated brief measures of infant attachment. The aim of this study is to create a brief version of the Attachment Q-Sort (AQS), one of the gold-standard measures of attachment. METHOD: Data was used from the National Institute of Child Health and Development Study of Child Care and Youth Development (N = 1,364). The factor structure of the AQS was explored, and Item Response Theory was used to select a reduced number of items. Convergent validity of the shortened measure was assessed through associations with the Strange Situation Procedure. Correlations with sensitivity, externalising, and social competence were also examined. RESULTS: The Brief Attachment Scale (BAS-16) was created consisting of two scales of eight items, relating to (a) harmonious interaction with the caregiver and (b) proximity-seeking behaviours. The BAS-16 showed comparable convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity to the full AQS. CONCLUSION: This brief version of the AQS shows potential as a screening measure for insecure attachment in infancy. Further development and validation is required in separate samples.

One major advantage of sexual reproduction over asexual reproduction is its promotion of genetic variation, although it reduces the genetic contribution to offspring. Queens of social insects double their contribution to the gene pool, while overuse of asexual reproduction may reduce the ability of the colony to adapt to environmental stress because of the loss of genetic diversity. Recent studies have revealed that queens of some termite species can solve this tradeoff by using parthenogenesis to produce the next generation of queens and sexual reproduction to produce other colony members. This reproductive system, known as asexual queen succession (AQS), has been identified in the subterranean termites Reticulitermes speratus, Reticulitermes virginicus and Reticulitermes lucifugus and in the Neotropical higher termites Embiratermes neotenicus and Cavitermes tuberosus The studies presented here have uncovered the unusual modes of reproduction in termites and have aimed to identify their underlying mechanisms. The study of AQS, the mixed use of sexual and asexual reproduction, is of fundamental importance as it may provide a key to solve the evolutionary paradox of sex.

An enhanced research paradigm is presented to address the spatial and temporal gaps in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) measurements and generate realistic and representative concentration fields for use in epidemiological studies of human exposure to ambient air particulate concentrations. The general approach for research designed to analyze health impacts of exposure to PM2.5 is to use concentration data from the nearest ground-based air quality monitor(s), which typically have missing data on the temporal and spatial scales due to filter sampling schedules and monitor placement, respectively. To circumvent these data gaps, this research project uses a Hierarchical Bayesian Model (HBM) to generate estimates of PM2.5 in areas with and without air quality monitors by combining PM2.5 concentrations measured by monitors, PM2.5 concentration estimates derived from satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) data, and Community-Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model predictions of PM2.5 concentrations. This methodology represents a substantial step forward in the approach for developing representative PM2.5 concentration datasets to correlate with inpatient hospitalizations and emergency room visits data for asthma and inpatient hospitalizations for myocardial infarction (MI) and heart failure (HF) using case-crossover analysis. There were two key objective of this current study. First was to show that the inputs to the HBM could be expanded to include AOD data in addition to data from PM2.5 monitors and predictions from CMAQ. The second objective was to determine if inclusion of AOD surfaces in HBM model algorithms results in PM2.5 air pollutant concentration surfaces which more accurately predict hospital admittance and emergency room visits for MI, asthma, and HF. This study focuses on the New York City, NY metropolitan and surrounding areas during the 2004-2006 time period, in order to compare the health outcome impacts with those from previous studies and focus on any benefits derived from the changes in the HBM model surfaces. Consistent with previous studies, the results show high PM2.5 exposure is associated with increased risk of asthma, myocardial infarction and heart failure. The estimates derived from concentration surfaces that incorporate AOD had a similar model fit and estimate of risk as compared to those derived from combining monitor and CMAQ data alone. Thus, this study demonstrates that estimates of PM2.5 concentrations from satellite data can be used to supplement PM2.5 monitor data in the estimates of risk associated with three common health outcomes. Results from this study were inconclusive regarding the potential benefits derived from adding AOD data to the HBM, as the addition of the satellite data did not significantly increase model performance. However, this study was limited to one metropolitan area over a short two-year time period. The use of next-generation, high temporal and spatial resolution satellite AOD data from geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites is expected to improve predictions in epidemiological studies in areas with fewer pollutant monitors or over wider geographic areas.

Cellulose fibers(CFs)-based electrode materials are of considerable interest for future wearable electronic devices due to excellent flexibility and strength, and hydrophilicity. The effective introduction of electrode materials into CFs is essential for flexible supercapaciotors(SCs). A tunable electrochemical performance of conductive polymers for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT) has been aroused great interests. Herein, we design its electrochemical process via sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate(AQS) as dopant and electrolyte additive to construct active electrode interior and interface. As a result, the PEDOT@CFs electrode exhibits great increase of doping level from 0.16 to 0.29, conductivity from 353.46 to 626.15 S m-1, and specific capacitance from 140.22 to 1211.57 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1. Furthermore, the PEDOT:AQS@CFs electrode possess excellent cyclic stability (96.01 %) after 1000 cycles. The work reveals the mechanism of AQS as dopant and electrolyte additive, and provides a new perspective for application of PEDOT in energy storage field.

BACKGROUND: Although studies suggest that exposure to pollutants is associated with race/ethnicity and socio-economic status (SES), many studies are limited to the geographic regions where monitoring stations are located. OBJECTIVES: This study uses modeled predictive surfaces to examine the relationship between air pollution exposure, race/ethnicity, and measures of SES across the entire State of North Carolina. METHODS: The daily predictions of particulate matter <2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) were determined using a spatial model that fused data from two sources: point air monitoring data and gridded numerical output. These daily predicted pollution levels for 2002 were linked with Census data. We examine the relationship between the census-tract level predicted concentration measures, SES, and racial composition. RESULTS: SES and race/ethnicity were related to predicted concentrations of both PM2.5 and O3 for census tracts in North Carolina. Lower SES and higher proportion minority population were associated with higher levels of PM2.5. An interquartile range (IQR) increase of median household income reduced the predicted average PM2.5 level by 0.10 µg/m3. The opposite relationship was true for O3. An IQR increase of median household income increased the predicted average O3 measure by 0.11 ppb. CONCLUSIONS: The analyses demonstrate that SES and race/ethnicity are related to predicted estimates of PM2.5 and O3 for census tracts in North Carolina. These findings offer a baseline for future exposure modeling work involving SES and air pollution for the entire state and not just among the populations residing near monitoring networks.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), also called as bacterial membrane vesicles (BMVs), are secreted by many Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. These nanoscale vesicles traffic discrete arrays of virulence factors that can often induce complex pathologies far from the infection sites. The OMVs of P. aeruginosa, often regarded as the gold standard of BMVs are known to traffic a battery of specific small MW alkyl-quinolones (AQs). These AQs function like primordial hormones by modulating intra-species and inter-species bacterial interactions. They can also perform cross-kingdom signaling with the human host and directly exacerbate pathogenesis. The discrete isotopic signatures of AQs enjoy potential in the mass spectrometry-based diagnosis P. aeruginosa infections. Matrix-free laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) presents a robust, cost-effective platform to fit this demand. We describe a LDI-MS system using inert ceramic filters that performs dual role of single-step enrichment of OMVs and matrix-free ionization/identification of AQs in situ.

Polypyrrole@cellulose fibers (PPy@CFs) electrode materials are promising candidates in the energy storage. Various strategies have been pursued to improve their electrochemical performance. However, the poor conductivity, specific capacitance, and cyclic stability still hindered its application. Compared with the previous studies, we selected AQS with electrochemical activity as a dopant to improve these defects. It exhibits a high capacitance of 829.8 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1, which is much higher than that of PPy@CFs electrode material (261.9 F g-1). Moreover, the capacitance retention of PPy:AQS/p-PTSA@CFs reaches up to 96.01% after 1000 cycles, indicating superior cyclic stability. Therefore, this work provides an efficient strategy for constructing high-performance electrode materials for energy storage.

Antimony (Sb) is a typical pollutant in sulfate-rich industrial wastewater. This study investigated the Sb removal efficiency in sulfate-rich water by anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) and the stimulation of amended anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS). Results showed that 89.0% of 5 mg/L Sb(V) was reduced by AnGS within 24 h, along with the observed first accumulation (up to 552.2 µg/L) and then precipitation of Sb(Ш); coexistence of 2 g/L sulfate inhibited the removal of Sb(V) by 71.4% within 24 h, along with gradual accumulation of Sb(Ш) by 3257.4 µg/L, indicating the potential competition of adsorption sites and electron donors between Sb(V) and sulfate. Amendment of 31 mg/L AQS successfully removed the inhibition from sulfate, contributing to 99.5% Sb(V) removal and minimum Sb(Ш) accumulation in Sb(V) + sulfate+AQS group. Further test results suggested that Sb(V) removal by AnGS was mainly through dissimilatory reduction instead of bio-sorption, while Sb(Ш) removal mainly relied on instant bio-sorption by AnGS followed by precipitation in the form of Sb2O3 and Sb2S3. Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) characterization showed that AQS promoted the accumulation of Sb(V) and Sb(Ш) in EPS. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed the enrichment of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in Sb(V) + sulfate group and suppressed SRB growth in Sb(V) + sulfate+AQS group.

Objectives: The quorum-sensing-inhibitory and anti-biofilm activities of the methanol extract of E. globulus leaves were determined against clinically isolated multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Methods: The preliminary anti-quorum-sensing (AQS) activity of eucalyptus was investigated against a biosensor strain Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472 (CV12472) by using the agar well diffusion method. The effect of sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of the methanol extract of eucalyptus on different quorum-sensing-regulated virulence factors, such as swarming motility, pyocyanin pigment, exopolysaccharide (EPS), and biofilm formation, against clinical isolates (CIs 2, 3, and 4) and reference PA01 of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were determined using the swarm diameter (mm)-measurement method, chloroform extraction method, phenol (5%)-sulphuric acid (concentrated) method, and the microtiter plate assay respectively, and the inhibition (%) in formation were calculated. Results: The preliminary AQS activity (violacein pigment inhibition) of eucalyptus was confirmed against Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472 (CV12472). The eucalyptus extract also showed concentration-dependent inhibition (%) of swarming motility, pyocyanin pigment, EPS, and biofilm formation in different CIs and PA01 of P. aeruginosa. Conclusion: Our results revealed the effectiveness of the E. globulus extract for the regulation of quorum-sensing-dependent virulence factors and biofilm formation at a reduced dose (sub-MICs) and suggest that E. globulus may be a therapeutic agent for curing and controlling bacterial infection and thereby reducing the possibility of resistance development in pathogenic strains.

In this work, lawsone (LQ) and anthraquinone 2-sulphonate (AQS) (dissolved and covalently immobilized on activated carbon) were evaluated as redox mediators during the dark fermentation of glucose by a pretreated anaerobic sludge. Findings revealed that the use of dissolved LQ increased H2 production (10%), and dissolved AQS improved H2 production rate (11.4%). Furthermore, the total production of liquid byproducts (acetate, butyrate, ethanol, and butanol) was enhanced using dissolved (17%) and immobilized (36%) redox mediators. The established redox standard potentials of LQ and AQS suggested a possible interaction through electron transfer in cytochromes complexes for hydrogen production and the Bcd/EtfAB complex for volatile fatty acid formation.

Low-cost air monitoring sensors are an appealing tool for assessing pollutants in environmental studies. Portable low-cost sensors hold promise to expand temporal and spatial coverage of air quality information. However, researchers have reported challenges in these sensors' operational quality. We evaluated the performance characteristics of two widely used sensors, the Plantower PMS A003 and Shinyei PPD42NS, for measuring fine particulate matter compared to reference methods, and developed regional calibration models for the Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Winston-Salem and Seattle metropolitan areas. Duplicate Plantower PMS A003 sensors demonstrated a high level of precision (averaged Pearson's r = 0.99), and compared with regulatory instruments, showed good accuracy (cross-validated R2 = 0.96, RMSE = 1.15 µg/m3 for daily averaged PM2.5 estimates in the Seattle region). Shinyei PPD42NS sensor results had lower precision (Pearson's r = 0.84) and accuracy (cross-validated R2 = 0.40, RMSE = 4.49 µg/m3). Region-specific Plantower PMS A003 models, calibrated with regulatory instruments and adjusted for temperature and relative humidity, demonstrated acceptable performance metrics for daily average measurements in the other six regions (R2 = 0.74-0.95, RMSE = 2.46-0.84 µg/m3). Applying the Seattle model to the other regions resulted in decreased performance (R2 = 0.67-0.84, RMSE = 3.41-1.67 µg/m3), likely due to differences in meteorological conditions and particle sources. We describean approach to metropolitan region-specific calibration models for low-cost sensors that can be used with cautionfor exposure measurement in epidemiological studies.

Quinones are becoming an essential tool for refractory organics treatment, while their quantification may be not well-considered. In this paper, two kinds of potential errors in quantification were evaluated in multiple pH conditions. They were derived from the coexistence of oxidized/reduced quinone species (Type I) and pH-sensitive feature (Type II), respectively. These errors would remarkably influence the accuracy of quantification while they haven't been emphasized. Thus, to elaborate the relationship between the two types of errors and the absorbance or pH conditions, three typical quinones [Anthraquinone-1-sulfonate (α-AQS), anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) and lawsone] were selected and their acid dissociation coefficients (pKa) as well as UV-Vis spectra were determined. Results revealed that, for Type I, the relative error (RE) of α-AQS concentration would exceed the limit (5%) when reduced α-AQS was below 48% of total α-AQS. Similar results were found for lawsone. However, the RE can be eliminated by the equation established in this paper. For Type II, the pH-sensitive feature was related to the pKa values of quinones. Absorbances of α-AQS and lawsone would change remarkably with pH variation. Therefore, a model for correction was established. Analog data showed high consistency with experimental data [r = 0.995 (n = 25, p < 0.01) and r = 0.997 (n = 36, p < 0.01), for lawsone and α-AQS respectively]. Especially, the determination of AQDS concentrations was noticed to be pH-independent at 437 nm under pH 4.00 to 9.18 conditions. Based on these features, a comprehensive data solution was proposed for handling these errors.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease that predisposes individuals to pulmonary dysfunction and chronic infections. Early infection of the CF lung with Staphylococcus aureus is common, while Pseudomonas aeruginosa becomes dominant as disease progresses. Emergence of P. aeruginosa likely depends on the action of multiple 2-alkyl-4-(1H)-quinolones (AQ) secreted by this organism. We recently showed that antimicrobial activity against S. aureus is enhanced by iron depletion and is dependent upon multiple AQ metabolites. Two of these AQs, the Pseudomonas quinolone signal [PQS; 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4(1H)-quinolone] and 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline (HHQ), are quorum sensing molecules that activate the expression of multiple microbicidal factors. Here we show for the first time that HHQ also exhibits innate antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. We further show that iron depletion potentiates the antistaphylococcal activity of HHQ, as well as 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HQNO), another AQ that functions as a cytochrome B inhibitor. Notably, we found that deletion of the genes for the terminal biosynthetic steps for either PQS or HQNO results in overproduction of the HHQ intermediate, likely maintaining the ability of these mutants to mediate antimicrobial activity. Compensatory increases in HHQ were also observed in PQS-deficient CF isolates, which also retained the ability to mediate iron-regulated antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. These studies demonstrate that iron-regulated antimicrobial activity of P. aeruginosa against S. aureus is due to the cumulative effects of multiple AQ metabolites, both the production and activity of which are modulated by environmental iron levels.

This work reports a comparative study about extraction methods used to obtain anthraquinones (AQs) from stems and leaves of Heterophyllae pustulata Hook (Rubiáceae). One of the conventional procedures used to extract these metabolites from a vegetable matrix is by successive Soxhlet extractions with solvents of increasing polarity: starting with hexane to eliminate chlorophylls and fatty components, following by benzene and finally ethyl acetate. However, this technique shows a low extraction yield of total AQs, and consumes large quantities of solvent and time. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) have been investigated as alternative methods to extract these compounds, using the same sequence of solvents. It was found that UAE increases the extraction yield of total AQs and reduces the time and amount of solvent used. Nevertheless, the combination UAE with benzene, plus MAE with ethyl acetate at a constant power of 900 W showed the best results. A higher yield of total AQs was obtained in less time and using the same amount of solvent that UAE. The optimal conditions for this latter procedure were UAE with benzene at 50 °C during 60 min, followed by MAE at 900 W during 15 min using ethyl acetate as extraction solvent.

The present study reports on a revised kinetic model for alkaline degradation of cellulose accounting for primary peeling/stopping reactions as well as for alkaline hydrolysis followed by secondary peeling. Oxalic acid pretreated cotton linters was utilised as the model substrate for the prehydrolysis-soda anthraquinone process. The main emphasis was investigating the effect of end-group stabilising additives such as sodium borohydride (BH), anthraquinone (AQ), and anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid sodium salt (AQS) on the rates of the yield loss reactions. BH and AQS ensured a cellulose yield gain of 13% and 11%, respectively, compared to the reference. Both stabilisation agents decreased the content of the reducing end groups in the samples, while in the case of AQS stabilisation a 25% increase in carboxyl group content compared to the reference was also observed. As expected, the addition of end group stabilisers resulted in a significant decrease in the peeling-to-stopping rate constants ratio.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity in the response to PM2.5 is hypothesized to be related to differences in particle composition across monitoring sites which reflect differences in source types as well as climatic and topographic conditions impacting different geographic locations. Identifying spatial patterns in particle composition is a multivariate problem that requires novel methodologies. OBJECTIVES: Use cluster analysis methods to identify spatial patterns in PM2.5 composition. Verify that the resulting clusters are distinct and informative. METHODS: 109 monitoring sites with 75% reported speciation data during the period 2003-2008 were selected. These sites were categorized based on their average PM2.5 composition over the study period using k-means cluster analysis. The obtained clusters were validated and characterized based on their physico-chemical characteristics, geographic locations, emissions profiles, population density and proximity to major emission sources. RESULTS: Overall 31 clusters were identified. These include 21 clusters with 2 or more sites which were further grouped into 4 main types using hierarchical clustering. The resulting groupings are chemically meaningful and represent broad differences in emissions. The remaining clusters, encompassing single sites, were characterized based on their particle composition and geographic location. CONCLUSIONS: The framework presented here provides a novel tool which can be used to identify and further classify sites based on their PM2.5 composition. The solution presented is fairly robust and yielded groupings that were meaningful in the context of air-pollution research.
