RESUMO

Here is reported the case of an adult patient with ethylic cirrhosis associated with spur cell anemia. Moreover, acute vacuolation of leukocytes was observed in relationship with recent binge drinking.

RESUMO

Acanthocytes are special cells with a distinct spiky shape produced exclusively by the fungi of Stropharia and can be used to defend against nematodes. In the present study, the ultrastructure and development of acanthocytes were revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cryo-SEM in S. rugosoannulata, a popular cultivated mushroom both in China and Europe. The acanthocytes were abundant on the surface of rhizomorph, casing soils, and vegetative mycelia of homokaryotic and heterokaryotic strains in S. rugosoannulata. The development of the acanthocyte was investigated with cryo-SEM, which has distinct advantage for observation of the ultrastructure of live, hydrated structures. Three distinct stages, including formation of lateral branch that was covered with patches, spiky structure formation, and maturation of acanthocytes, were identified and described. The irregular patches deposited on the surface of lateral branches and the holes in the spiky branches of the acanthocytes were reported for the first time. The environmental nitrogen level showed impact on acanthocyte production, but it seemed not to be the indispensable factor. Acid medium could delay the initiation of the acanthocyte formation but did not affect the overall morphology and structure, indicating that the central deposit of acanthocytes should be acid soluble. Acanthocytes of S. rugosoannulata have similar hydrophobicity to mycelia. The observation of ultrastructure and development process of acanthocytes provides insights into the ecological function and evolution of this special structure.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The presence of schistocytes on the peripheral blood film during disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) remains controversial. METHODS: We examined schistocytes count on blood films from 35 DIC patients and checked morphological anomalies of all RBCs. RESULTS: Thirty of 35 patients presented with schistocytes and 22 with acanthocytes, which was the commonest shape anomaly. Mean percentage ± standard deviation was 0.33 ± 0.38%, median value was 0.1%, and range was 0-1.4%. The patients with schistocytes ≥ 1% had circumstances frequently associated with increased schistocytes count (promyelocytic leukaemia, pregnancy, severe infection). DISCUSSION: Schistocytes were thus frequently observed in DIC patients, usually with low percentage, within or close to the reference range (<0.5%). Schistocytes measurement is not a clue test for the initial diagnosis of DIC, but might be of clinical value to suggest an associated or underlying thrombotic microangiopathy if ≥ 1%.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: An acanthocyte is an abnormally shaped erythrocyte. In veterinary medicine, acanthocytes have historically been associated with canine hemangiosarcoma. In human medicine, acanthocytes are rarely observed with neoplastic disease and are more commonly associated with a variety of hereditary and acquired diseases. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to determine what disease processes are associated with the presence of acanthocytes in the peripheral blood of dogs. METHODS: Medical records for dogs presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Colorado State University during January 2004 through June 2008 with acanthocytes documented in their CBCs were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: A total of 123 dogs were included, 66 of which were diagnosed with neoplastic disease, most commonly hemangiosarcoma (n = 12), osteosarcoma (n = 11), and lymphoma (n = 11). The remaining 57 dogs had nonneoplastic disease, most commonly observed were gastrointestinal (n = 13), musculoskeletal (n = 8), renal (n = 8), and immune-mediated diseases (n = 7). No statistically significant difference was detected between percent acanthocytes present in dogs with neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases. CONCLUSION: Acanthocytosis was observed with a variety of neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases. While clearly commonly associated, the presence of acanthocytes in a blood smear should not be considered pathognomonic for hemangiosarcoma in dogs.

RESUMO

Objective To investigate the clinical symptoms, the results of auxiliary examinations and treatment ofchorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc). Methods Retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 2 patients with ChAc were performed. Results The main clinical symptoms of ChAc were involuntary choreiform movement, with its typical characteristic of habitual tongue and lip biting; increased amount of acanthocytes in the peripheral blood was noted; epileptic seizure, peripheral nerve injury, cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms, elevated muscular enzyme spectrum and shrinked caudate nucleus might appear. Symptomatic and supportive treatments were needed. Conclusion ChAc is a rare progressive hereditary neurodegenerative disease. The clinical features, increased amount of acanthocyte in the peripheral blood, characteristic imaging findings and electrophysiologic changes can be help in the diagnosis of ChAc. Its prognosis is worse, thus, early diagnosis and in-time treatment are important, which can be realized by early blood smear examination for suspicious patients.
