RESUMO
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants being widely distributed and harmful to human health and wildlife, and the development of sustainable rehabilitation strategies including microbial degradation is of great concern. Although the increasing number of bacteria, especially the broad-spectrum and potent aerobes have been isolated for the efficient removal of PBDEs, the external influences and the corresponding influential mechanism on biodegradation are not fully understood yet. Given the wide-spectrum biodegradability of aerobic bacterial isolate, B. xenovorans LB400 for PBDEs, the dual impacts of many pivotal factors including pH, temperature, presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and cadmium ion etc. were comprehensively revealed on biodegradation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47). Due to the structural resemblance and stimulation of specific enzyme activity in bacteria, the biphenyl as substrates showed the greater capacity than non-aromatic compounds in improving biodegradation. The individual adaptation to neutrality and cultivation at about 30 °C was beneficial for biodegradation since the bacterial cellular viability and enzyme activity was mostly preserved. Although it was possibly good for the induction of hormesis and favorable to enhance the permeability or bioavailability of pollutant, the exceeding increase of Cd2+ or DOM may not give the profitable increase of biodegradation yet for the detrimental effect. For biodegradation, the mechanistic relationship that took account of the integrative correlation with the influential factors was artfully developed using partial least square (PLS) regression technique. Relative to the most significant influence of culture time and initial concentration of BDE-47, the larger relevance of other factors primarily marked as pH and DOM was consecutively shown after the quantitative prioritization. This may not only help understand the influential mechanism but provide a prioritizing regulation strategy for biodegradation of BDE-47. The PLS-derived relationship was validated with the certain predictability in biodegradation, and could be used as an alternative to accelerate a priori evaluation of suitability or improve the feasibility of such bacteria in remediation of PBDEs in the environment.

Joostella strains are emerging candidates for biosurfactant production. Here such ability was analyzed for Joostella strain A8 in comparison with Alcanivorax strain A53 and Pseudomonas strain A6, all previously isolated from hydrocarbon enrichment cultures made of polychaete homogenates. In pure cultures Joostella sp. A8 showed the highest stable emulsion percentage (78.33%), hydrophobicity rate (62.67%), and an optimal surface tension reduction during growth in mineral medium supplemented with diesel oil (reduction of about 12mN/m), thus proving to be highly competitive with Alcanivorax and Pseudomonas strains. During growth in pure culture different level of biodegradation were detected for Alcanivorax strain A53 (52.7%), Pseudomonas strain A6 (38.2%) and Joostella strain A8 (26.8%). When growing in consortia, isolates achieved similar abundance values, with the best efficiency that was observed for the Joostella-Pseudomonas co-culture. Gas-chromatographic analysis revealed an increase in the biodegradation efficiency in co-cultures (about 90%), suggesting that the contemporary action of different bacterial species could improve the process. Results were useful to compare the efficiencies of well-known biosurfactant producers (i.e. Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax representatives) with a still unknown biosurfactant producer, i.e. Joostella, and to confirm them as optimal biosurfactant-producing candidates.

We investigated the behavior of tetracycline degradation and its degradation products upon treatment of isolated yeast that we termed "XPY-10." XPY-10 was isolated from wastewater and identified as Trichosporon mycotoxinivorans by morphological and physiological tests and 5.8S rRNA ITS sequencing. In our experiments, 78.28 ± 0.8% of tetracycline was removed within 7 days with XPY-10. The degradation of tetracycline fitted well with the first-order kinetic model. We also speculated upon the biodegradation products formed during biodegradation. The possible structures of five products were determined using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. During practical application, XPY-10 was shown to have an obvious influence on biodegradation, and 89.61% of tetracycline was removed in feedlot sewage after 7 days of reaction. The chemical oxygen demand removal reached 73.47%.

Potential of Arthrobacter citreus B27Pet, Bacillus thuringiensis B48Pet and Candida catnulata to produce biosurfactant using four different carbon sources (naphthalene, hexadecane, diesel and petroleum crude oil) was investigated. Removal of petroleum crude oil from aqueous culture and degradation of diesel were also determined using single and mixed culture of strains. The biofilm existence in single and mixed culture of strains was considered using naphthalene, hexadecane and diesel in culture medium. Cell surface hydrophobicity of A. citreus was higher than other isolates which also showed maximum surface tension reduction and emulsification index. As a whole, remarkable biosurfactant production occurred using petroleum crude oil as a carbon source in medium. A. citreus was found to be more robust than other tested strains in removal efficiency of crude oil due to its biosurfactant production capability. Statistically significant positive correlation was observed between biofilm existence and surface tension using diesel and hexadecane as carbon source. Overall diesel biodegradation efficiency by the mix culture of three applied strains was about 75% within a short period of time (10 days) which was accompanied with high biofilm production.
RESUMO
Soil pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems globally due to the weak self-purification ability, long degradation time, and high cost of cleaning soil pollution. The pollutants in the soil can be transported into the human body through water or dust, causing adverse effects on human health. The latest research has shown that the clean-up of soil pollutants through microbial consortium is a very promising method. This review provides an in-depth discussion on the efficient removal, bio-adsorption, or carbonated precipitation of organic and inorganic pollutants by the microbial consortium, including PAHs, BPS, BPF, crude oil, pyrene, DBP, DOP, TPHP, PHs, butane, DON, TC, Mn, and Cd. In view of the good degradation ability of the consortium compared to single strains, six different synergistic mechanisms and corresponding microorganisms are summarized. The microbial consortium obtains such activities through enhancing synergistic degradation, reducing the accumulation of intermediate products, generating the crude enzyme, and self-regulating, etc. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of pollutants can be greatly improved by adding chemical materials such as the surfactants Tween 20, Tween 80, and SDS. This review provides insightful information regarding the application of microbial consortia for soil pollutant removal.
RESUMO
Microbiological degradation is often considered as an important strategy to reduce the risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are environmentally widespread and harmful to human health and wildlife. With the well-identified aerobic bacteria, i.e. B. xenovorans LB400, the biodegradation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) occurred efficiently in conformity to the first-order kinetics and showed the strong dependence on initial concentration of pollutant and bioavailability regulation by biosurfactant. The mild increase of initial concentration of BDE-47 would enhance biodegradation whereas the excessive increase failed due to the oxidative stress or cytotoxicity to bacteria. Rather than the bacterial extracellular adsorption that was bioactively-mediated in thermodynamics, the intracellular accumulations at different time gradients showed the negative correlation with biodegradation efficiency of BDE-47. The spontaneous biodegradation of pollutant should be sourced from the gradual reduction of intracellular accumulation. Though the improved bioavailability of BDE-47 by sucrose fatty acid ester (SFAE) hardly altered the extracellular adsorption, the bacterial intracellular accumulation was indicated to increase continuously with used amount of biosurfactant and then decrease for the cellular morphological damage, and interestingly it appeared to be temporary reservoir for prompt delivery to biodegradation in light of the opposite variation tendency with time.

Nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs), although banned for decades, are still widely used in manufactories and thus affect human lives. In this study, a highly efficient NPEO-degrading bacterium, Sphingomonas sp. Y2, was isolated from sewage sludge by enrichment culture. Strain Y2 ensured the complete removal of NPEO in 48 h and degraded 99.2 % NPEO (1,000 mg L(-1)) within 30 h at a specific growth rate of 0.73 h(-1) in minimum salt medium. To date, this degradation efficiency is the highest reported for NPEO metabolism by a pure bacterium under this condition. Furthermore, the application of this bacterium to wastewater treatment demonstrated that it metabolized 98.5 % NPEO (1,000 mg L(-1)) within 5 days with a specific growth rate of 2.03 day(-1). The degradation intermediates, identified as nonylphenol, short-chain NPEOs and short-chain nonylphenol polyethoxycarboxylates by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, indicated the sequential exo-cleavage of the EO chain. Additionally, the enzymes involved in the biodegradation were inducible rather than constitutive. Considering that strain Y2 exhibits prominent biodegradation advantages in industrial wastewater treatment, it might serve as a promising potential candidate for in situ bioremediation of contamination by NPEOs and other structurally similar compounds.

We report a hydrothermal method to prepare reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based hydrogel (Gel(rGONR)), using neutral red (NR) to mediate the assembly of rGO sheets and tune the pore size of Gel(rGONR). A series of techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and BET were employed to characterize the physico-chemical properties of Gel(rGONR). A large pore size of up to 20 µm and interconnected porous structure of Gel(rGONR) were obtained. Gel(rGONR) was used as a support for immobilizing microbe (denoted as Gel(rGONR-M)), which showed ~3.3 times more load mass of microbe than commonly used supports (i.e., activated carbon and carbon fiber felt) and 2.5 times higher biodegradation efficiency (BE) than carbon fiber felt. Further use of Gel(rGONR-M) as a biocatalyst for establishing a BOD biosensor exhibits a linear range of 2-64 mg O L(-1) and a detection limit 0.4 mg O L(-1) for glucose-glutamic acid (GGA). Moreover, our proposed BOD detection strategy shows a long-term viability over one year and stability up to 2 months with a relative standard deviation of 2.1%. Our results demonstrated the great potential of employing Gel(rGONR) as a microbe-immobilization support for biosensor development.
