This study aimed to screen spice extracts that can target the inhibition of biogenic amine (BA)-producing bacteria and reduce the BA accumulation in reduced-salt dry sausages. A total of 59 bacterial strains were isolated from reduced-salt dry sausages; among them, three isolates, namely, Staphylococcus epidermidis S1, S. saprophyticus S2, and S. edaphicus S3, had the strongest ability to produce BA. Eight spice extracts, i.e. Angelica dahurica, cinnamon, ginger, clove, fennel, Amomum, nutmeg, and orange peel, were extracted. The inhibition zone diameter and minimum inhibitory concentration indicated that A. dahurica, Amomum, and clove elicited the strongest inhibitory effect on BA-producing strains. Growth kinetics showed the strongest inhibitory effect of clove extracts, followed by Amomum and A. dahurica. In the medium system, clove extract was the most effective in controlling the total BA content by inhibiting of BA-producing strains S. epidermidis S1, S. saprophyticus S2, and S. edaphicus S3; their contents were reduced by 23.74%, 31.05% and 21.37%, respectively. In the dry sausage system, the control of BA accumulation by clove was quite prominent, and the total BA content was reduced from 373.70 mg/kg to 259.05 mg/kg on day 12.

The current study aimed to investigate the impact of nano-formulations of clove bud ethanolic extract (CBENF) in the extender on sperm characteristics, antioxidant capacity, oxidative biomarkers, enzymatic activity, apoptosis and fertility of post-thawed rabbit semen. Twelve mature male rabbits semen samples were pooled and cryopreserved in a Tris-egg yolk-based extender containing varying concentrations of CBENF (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 µg/mL). After the equilibration and freezing-thawing process, CBENF (100 µg /mL) significantly enhanced progressive motility, viability and membrane integrity. Conversely, sperm abnormality was significantly reduced by CBENF supplementation. Total antioxidant capacity was increased in the post-thawed sperm medium, while nitric oxide and malondialdehyde were decreased in all CBENF concentrations. The lactic dehydrogenase and caspase-3 activities were decreased, whereas the number of live spermatozoa with an intact acrosome was increased in all CBENF concentrations. Conception rate and litter size per doe were higher in doe rabbits inseminated with semen supplemented with 100 µg CBENF/mL than un-supplemented group (76% vs. 52% and 8.4 vs. 7.7/doe), with no statistical differences. These findings suggest that supplementing rabbit extenders with 100 µg of CBENF/mL could be an effective strategy for enhancing freeze-thawing rabbit sperm attributes and fertility.

This study aimed to provide an understanding of the influence of eugenol on CYP1A2, 2C9, 2D6, and 3A4 in human liver microsomes (HLM). Specific substrate for CYP1A2, 2C9, 2D6, and 3A4 were incubated in HLM with or without eugenol. The formation of their respective metabolites was assessed with HPLC analytical methods. Eugenol at 1, 10 and 100 µM levels inhibited the activity of CYP1A2 and CYP2C9 by 23.38 %, 23.57 %, 39.80 % and 62.82 %, 63.27 %, 67.70 % respectively. While, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 activity was decreased by 40.70 %, 45.88 %, 62.68 % and 37.41 %, 42.58 % and 67.86 % at 1, 10 and 100 µM eugenol level respectively. The IC50 value of eugenol for CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 was calculated as 11.09 ± 3.49 µM and 13.48 ± 3.86 µM respectively. Potential herb-drug interactions was noted when eugenol is administered simultaneously with medications metabolized by these enzymes, most notably CYP2C9, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4.

In this study, cellulose was synthesized from the residue obtained after germinating tiger nuts for 0, 48, 72 or 96 h. The influence of the synthesized cellulose (0%, 2%, or 5%) on the quality of clove extract laden-cookies was evaluated. The optimum structure, morphology, and thermal properties of cellulose were obtained after geminating tiger nuts for 72 h. Adding cellulose to the dough stabilized the total phenolic, flavonoid, and protein contents and radical scavenging activity during the baking operation. The addition of 2% cellulose generally enhanced the hydration, pasting, and viscoelastic properties of the dough. However, 5% cellulose negatively affected the highlighted properties, culminating in poorer textural and sensory properties of the cookies produced therefrom. Germination could be effective in modifying the properties of cellulose from tiger nuts; thus, enhancing its application in the production of a functional cookie. We focused on assessing the antimicrobial effects of functional yoghurts supplemented with clove and probiotics. The formulation of aqueous clove extract (ACE) incorporated with probiotic yoghurt (Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and Lactococcus lactis) was optimised in terms of aqueous clove extract concentrations (2.5-7.5% v/v), fermentation temperature (32-42 °C), and total culture concentration (1.5-4.5% v/v). pH, titratable acidity, syneresis, water holding capacity, viscosity, springiness, color difference, lactic acid bacteria viability, and the antibacterial property of 17 runs were determined as responses using Box-Behnken design. The results indicate that elevated ACE concentration leads to a significant (p < 0.05) increase in titratable acidity, antibacterial effectiveness (against K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa), springiness, and color profile. Conversely, an elevated fermentation temperature significantly (p < 0.05) reduces pH and L. bulgaricus viability (log CFU/mL). Additionally, there is a significant (p < 0.05) decline in S. thermophilus and L. lactis viability (log CFU/mL) as well as springiness with an increased culture concentration. The optimal conditions identified are 7.5% (v/v) ACE concentration, a fermentation temperature of 36.6 °C (37 °C), and a total culture concentration of 4.5% (v/v), resulting in a 79% desirability score. The spectra of components were mainly obtained at wavelength of 3258 cm-1, 1636 cm-1 and 1075 cm-1 in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of optimized functional yoghurt. Where, 3258 cm-1 corresponds to the stretching vibration of O-H (hydroxyl) groups, 1636 cm-1 corresponds to the C=O (carbonyl) stretching vibration, and 1075 cm-1 corresponds to the C-O (ether or alcohol) stretching vibration.

The development of insecticide resistance is a serious consequence of the widespread applications of synthetic insecticides. Recent studies have provided alternatives to currently available insecticides. Here, novel cationic gemini surfactants were synthesized to assess their insecticidal activities using laboratory and field strains larvae of Culex pipiens Linnaeus (Diptera: Culicidae). The efficacy of these surfactants was compared to that of clove oil and spinosad. The two surfactants G1 and G2 showed good insecticidal activities in laboratory strain with LC50 0.013 and 0.054 ppm, respectively, relative to spinosad with LC50 0.027 ppm, 48 h posttreatment. Although spinosad showed high efficiency against lab strain, it exhibited a high resistance ratio (RR) of 15.111 and 13.111 toward the field strain at 24 and 48 h posttreatment, respectively. The two gemini surfactants have a good safety profile and low RR (RR <5), which is close to clove oil; however, G1 and G2 presented high activities with 11,043.230 and 2658.648 folds, respectively, compared to clove oil. The treated Cx. pipiens larvae showed severe morphological malformations after treatment with gemini surfactants. The results of this study are promising in terms of developing novel, effective, affordable, and safe approaches for mosquito control strategies to reduce the risk of arbovirus transmission, which remains a global public health threat.

The land snail, Theba pisana is a serious pest that adversely affects various crops in sustainable agriculture. Essential oils and their constituents represent an environmentally sound alternative to synthetic pesticides. Our study aimed to investigate the lethal and sub-lethal toxicity of clove oil and its main component eugenol to understand the mechanisms underlying its toxic action against T. pisana. The GC-MS profile of the clove oil composition was characterized. In the laboratory experiment, LD50 of clove oil and eugenol via the contact testing were determined after 48 and 72 h. Moreover, sub-lethal effects of clove oil or eugenol on the survivors following the exposure of snails to the 25 and 50% of the LD50/48 and 72 h were evaluated through using snail tissues for biochemical measurments. The GC-MS analysis showed that eugenol (64.87%) was the major constituent present in the oil. The results also showed that LD50 values at 48 and 72 h were 2006.5 and 1493.5 µg/g b.w for oil and 239.6 and 195.3 µg/g b.w for eugenol, respectively. Compared to control, the sub-lethal effects of clove oil or eugenol at 48 and 72 h showed a significant increase in reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. Catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities significantly elevated in oil- or eugenol-treated snails, except at low dose after 48 h. After two exposure times, snails exposed to oil or eugenol at both sub-lethal effects had considerably higher γ-glutamyltransferase (γ-GT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities. Moreover, markedly augmentation in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities at all exposure times, with the exception of snails treated with low dose of eugenol after 48 h was observed. Both clove oil and eugenol at the tested doses caused a significant inhibition in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity at two exposure times. Our findings highlight the potential of clove oil and eugenol, as an efficient natural molluscicide alternative to its synthetic counterparts for snail control.

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by insulin deficiency due to the destruction of pancreatic ß cells, leading to hyperglycemia, which in turn induces vascular complications. In the current study, we investigated the effect of intraperitoneal administration of clove essential oil (CEO: 20 mg/kg body weight) on certain oxidative stress and glucose metabolism enzymes, as well as the expression of proinflammatory mediators. Administration of CEO to diabetic rats showed a significant decline in blood glucose levels, total cholesterol, and xanthine oxidase, compared to the streptozotocin group. Furthermore, these treated rats elicited a notable attenuation in the levels of lipid peroxides, and thiols groups in both liver and brain tissues. The activities of antioxidant and metabolic enzymes were reverted to normality in diabetic upon CEO administration. In addition to its protective effects on red blood cell hemolysis, CEO is a potent α-amylase inhibitor with an IC50 =298.0±2.75â µg/mL. Also, treatment of diabetic rats with CEO significantly reduced the iNOS expression in the spleen. Our data showed that CEO has potential beneficial effects on diabetes, which can possibly prevent the pathogenesis of diabetic micro- and macrovascular complications.

OBJECTIVES: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most common nosocomial infections in intensive care units (ICUs), and the use of mouthwash is the most widely used method to prevent its incidence. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of clove mouthwash on the incidence of VAP in the ICU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This comparative, randomized, triple-blind, clinical trial was conducted on 168 eligible ICU patients at Kosar Hospital in Semnan, Iran, during 2021-2022, who were divided into intervention and control groups using random blocks. The intervention group received clove extract mouthwash at 6.66% concentration, and the control group received chlorhexidine 0.2% twice a day for 5 days (routine care). Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, and disease severity was measured based on the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score, oral health status was examined using the Beck Oral Assessment Scale (BOAS), and VAP diagnosis was made based on the Modified Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (MCPIS). RESULTS: Before the intervention, there was no significant difference in disease severity (p = 0.412) and oral health status (p = 0.239) between the patients in the two groups. After the intervention, 20.2% of the patients in the intervention group and 41.7% of those in the control group acquired VAP. The risk of VAP was 2.06 times higher in the control group than in the intervention group (p = 0.005, 95% CI: 1.26-3.37, RR = 2.06), but the severity of VAP did not differ significantly between the patients in the two groups (p = 0.557). CONCLUSION: The findings showed that clove mouthwash reduces the incidence of VAP significantly. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Clove mouthwash can be used as a simple and low-cost method to prevent VAP in ICU patients.

Viral infections are spread all around the world. Although there are available therapies, their safety and effectiveness are constrained by their adverse effects and drug resistance. Therefore, new natural antivirals have been used such as essential oils, which are natural products with promising biological activity. Accordingly, the present study aimed to identify the components of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) essential oil (EOCa) and verify its antioxidant and antiviral activity. The oil was analyzed using GC/MS, and the antioxidant capacity was evaluated as a function of the radical scavenging activity. A plaque reduction test was used to measure the antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), hepatitis A virus (HAV), and an adenovirus. GC/MS analysis confirmed the presence of eugenol as the main component (76.78%). Moreover, EOCa had powerful antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 50 µg/mL. The highest antiviral potential was found against HAV, with a selectivity index (SI) of 14.46, while showing poor selectivity toward HSV-1 with an SI value of 1.44. However, no relevant effect was detected against the adenovirus. The antiviral activity against HAV revealed that its effect was not related to host cytotoxicity. The findings imply that EOCa can be utilized to treat diseases caused by infections and free radicals.

In the current study, clove oil nanoemulsion (CL-nanoemulsion) and emulsion (CL-emulsion) were prepared through an ecofriendly method. The prepared CL-nanoemulsion and CL-emulsion were characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM), where results illustrated that CL-nanoemulsion droplets were approximately 32.67 nm in size and spherical in shape, while CL-nanoemulsion droplets were approximately 225.8 nm with a spherical shape. The antibacterial activity of CL-nanoemulsion and CL-emulsion was carried out using a microbroth dilution method. Results revealed that the preferred CL-nanoemulsion had minimal MIC values between 0.31 and 5 mg/mL. The antibiofilm efficacy of CL-nanoemulsion against S. aureus significantly decreased the development of biofilm compared with CL-emulsion. Furthermore, results illustrated that CL-nanoemulsion showed antifungal activity significantly higher than CL-emulsion. Moreover, the prepared CL-nanoemulsion exhibited outstanding antifungal efficiency toward Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus brasiliensis, A. flavus, and A. fumigatus where MICs were 12.5, 3.12, 0.78, 1.56, and 1.56 mg/mL, respectively. Additionally, the prepared CL-nanoemulsion was analyzed for its antineoplastic effects through a modified MTT assay for evaluating apoptotic and cytotoxic effects using HepG2 and MCF-7 cell lines. MCF-7 breast cancer cells showed the lowest IC50 values (3.4-fold) in CL-nanoemulsion relative to that of CL-emulsion. Thus, CL-nanoemulsion induces apoptosis in breast cancer cells by inducing caspase-8 and -9 activity and suppressing VEGFR-2. In conclusion, the prepared CL-nanoemulsion had antibacterial, antifungal, and antibiofilm as well as anticancer properties, which can be used in different biomedical applications after extensive studies in vivo.

The following investigations describe the potential of handheld NIR spectroscopy and Raman imaging measurements for the identification and authentication of food products. On the one hand, during the last decade, handheld NIR spectroscopy has made the greatest progress among vibrational spectroscopic methods in terms of miniaturization and price/performance ratio, and on the other hand, the Raman spectroscopic imaging method can achieve the best lateral resolution when examining the heterogeneous composition of samples. The utilization of both methods is further enhanced via the combination with chemometric evaluation methods with respect to the detection, identification, and discrimination of illegal counterfeiting of food products. To demonstrate the solution to practical problems with these two spectroscopic techniques, the results of our recent investigations obtained for various industrial processes and customer-relevant product examples have been discussed in this article. Specifically, the monitoring of food extraction processes (e.g., ethanol extraction of clove and water extraction of wolfberry) and the identification of food quality (e.g., differentiation of cocoa nibs and cocoa beans) via handheld NIR spectroscopy, and the detection and quantification of adulterations in powdered dairy products via Raman imaging were outlined in some detail. Although the present work only demonstrates exemplary product and process examples, the applications provide a balanced overview of materials with different physical properties and manufacturing processes in order to be able to derive modified applications for other products or production processes.

BACKGROUND: Treatment options for aspergillosis include amphotericin B (AMB) and azole compounds, such as itraconazole (ITZ). However, serious side effects related to these antifungal agents are increasingly evident, and resistance continues to increase. Currently, a new trend in drug discovery to overcome this problem is represented by natural products from plants, or their extracts. Particularly, there is a great interest in essential oils (EOs) recognized for their antimicrobial role towards bacteria, fungi and viruses. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated the antifungal activity of eleven commercial EOs-clove, eucalyptus, geranium, hybrid lavender, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, neroli, oregano, tea tree and red red thyme-in comparison with AMB and ITZ against Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus and A. niger clinical isolates. Antifungal activity was determined by broth microdilution method, agar diffusion technique, fungistatic and fungicidal activities and vapor contact assay. RESULTS: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis displayed two groups of distinct biosynthetical origin: monoterpenes dominated the chemical composition of the most oils. Only two aromatic compounds (eugenol 78.91% and eugenyl acetate 11.64%) have been identified as major components in clove EO. Lemongrass EO exhibits the strongest antimicrobial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.56 mg/mL and a minimum fungicidal concentration of 2.25-4.5 mg/mL against Aspergillus spp. strains. Clove and geranium EOs were fairly effective in inhibiting Aspergillus spp. growth. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the antimicrobial potential of some EOs and support the research of new alternatives or complementary therapies based on EOs.

Foreign body aspiration in adults is one of the uncommon causes of chronic cough and may be missed if the patient already has a known cause of chronic cough, but the same is not responding to therapy. A 72-year-old male patient, a known case of allergic rhinitis, presented with a history of cough for 6 months. There was unsatisfactory response to treatment with antibiotics, inhalational corticosteroids, oral corticosteroids, bronchodilators, and antireflux treatment. High-resolution computed tomography was normal. However, fiber optic bronchoscopy revealed a foreign body in the right lower lobe, which was removed and was identified as clove stalk. This led to rapid relief of symptoms. Clove stalk aspiration is an unusual foreign body causing chronic cough, which has not yet been reported.

The aim of the present study was to extend the shelf life of bread by using organic additives and optimization techniques. Quadruple effects of temperature (-18, + 4, + 20 °C), clove oil (0, 1, 2%), orange oil (0, 1, 2%), residence time (7, 14, 21 days) were investigated to determine optimum bread as moisture response. Quadratic model was found to be suitable with an accuracy of 0.9854 for moisture response. Rheological properties remained intact for 7 days at 20 °C in bread with 1% clove oil and 1% orange oil added. The effect of 4 effective parameters from 3 levels was examined with Box-Behnken in Design Expert. Optimum and control samples at two different temperatures were determined with SEM, TG-DTA and polarized light microscope. Consumer survey was conducted as appearance, colour, smell for optimum, control samples for bread and cake. It was concluded that bread samples could be stored with clove and orange oil at + 20 °C with period of 7 days without losing their quality properties.

Background: Essential oils (EOs) have a considerable amount of therapeutic and preventive effect in treating dental diseases due to their wider potential as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agents. EOs like virgin coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil thyme oil, and clove oil, when used in combination, may further have enhanced antimicrobial effects. However, limited information exists on the synergistic effect of these oils when used in combination, especially on the primary periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis. Aim: The current study aims to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of commercially available EO on the periodontal pathogen, P. gingivalis, in comparison to chlorhexidine (CHX). Materials and Methods: Antimicrobial efficacy of EO and CHX was assessed at various concentrations against the periodontal pathogen P. gingivalis, by evaluating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Results: P. gingivalis was seen to be sensitive at a MIC of 100 µg/ml and 50 µg/ml concentration of the EO, which is regarded as the MIC of EO against P. gingivalis and CHX effectively inhibited microbial growth at 0.4 µg/ml. Conclusion: A combination of EOs possesses a potent antibacterial activity against P. gingivalis, and the antibacterial efficacy increases with increasing concentration of EOs.

Oral microbes coexist with each other in a symbiotic relationship or as commensals in healthy body. Teeth and oral cavity harbor diverse community of fungi and bacteria. This study focused on bacterial and fungal component of gingiva, where the last occupy little attention. In addition to study the antimicrobial activity of toothpastes, mouth washes and natural oils against microorganisms. Sixty swabs from outer surfaces of gingiva in healthy persons, as well as patients complaining of gingivitis and periodontitis were collected for fungal and bacterial analyses. Sensitivity of the isolated microorganisms to some pharmaceutical preparations and natural oils was also performed. Ten fungal and 9 bacterial species were identified. There is a highly significant variation in the frequency of Klebsiella pneumonia among healthy, gingivitis and periodontitis. Also, Candida tropicalis and cocci bacteria showed significant diversity among the three tested groups. Among pharmaceutical preparations (toothpastes and mouth washes) and natural oils, Paradontax, Hexitol and clove oil showed the best antimicrobial activity against tested fungal and bacterial strains. Although, minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) of clove oil were high compared to Paradontax and Hexitol, nevertheless, it is highly recommended as both antifungal and antibacterial agent against oral pathogenic microorganisms, because it is a natural compound and nearly devoid of side effects.

INTRODUCTION: The general lack of knowledge about the composition of clove cigarettes and the large number of terms that can be used to define different types of cigarettes that contain cloves makes it difficult to find scientific articles focused on the subject. We reviewed the publications that cited clove cigarettes to assess their relevance. METHODS: We searched publications on Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Portal CAPES during the first semester of 2021, without date restrictions. Through a quality assessment, the studies found were assorted in ten different categories. RESULTS: Indonesian clove cigarettes-also known as kretek-are a mixture of tobacco and cloves rolled in a cigarette and sprayed with oils, plant extract, and food flavorings, in an unknown quantity and composition, different from each brand, which is usually kept in secret. Due to the relatively low prevalence of use in the general population, most publications on tobacco products tend to ignore clove cigarettes or place them in an existing category. Clove cigarettes can be hand-rolled, machine-made, filtered, unfiltered, and each form can be named differently. The interchangeable use of each term, sometimes grouping conventional cigarettes in the mix, can lead the researcher to consider a publication that should be excluded. CONCLUSION: The existing regulations on flavored cigarettes, although well-intentioned, are still somewhat vague and broad, leaving possible loopholes that can be exploited by the tobacco industries. Fully understanding the precise effects caused by clove cigarettes can be an important tool in future discussions about tobacco control.

The occurrence of candidiasis, including superficial infections, has recently increased dramatically, especially in immunocompromised patients. Their treatment is often ineffective due to the resistance of yeasts to antimycotics. Therefore, there is a need to search for new antifungals. The aim of this study was to determine the antifungal effect of clove essential oil (CEO) and eugenol (EUG) towards both reference and clinical Candida spp. strains isolated from the oral cavity of patients with hematological malignancies, and to investigate their mode of action and the interactions in combination with the selected antimycotics. These studies were performed using the broth microdilution method, tests with sorbitol and ergosterol, and a checkerboard technique, respectively. The CEO and EUG showed activity against all Candida strains with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) in the range of 0.25-2 mg/mL. It was also found that both natural products bind to ergosterol in the yeast cell membrane. Moreover, the interactions between CEO and EUG with several antimycotics-cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine, silver nitrate and triclosan-showed synergistic or additive effects in combination, except nystatin. This study confirms that the studied compounds appear to be a very promising group of phytopharmaceuticals used topically in the treatment of superficial candidiasis. However, this requires further studies in vivo.

Scots pine (SO) and clove (CO) essential oils (EOs) are commonly used by inhalation, and their main components are shown to reduce inflammatory mediator production. The aim of our research was to investigate the chemical composition of commercially available SO and CO by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and study their effects on airway functions and inflammation in an acute pneumonitis mouse model. Inflammation was evoked by intratracheal endotoxin and EOs were inhaled three times during the 24 h experimental period. Respiratory function was analyzed by unrestrained whole-body plethysmography, lung inflammation by semiquantitative histopathological scoring, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and cytokine measurements. α-Pinene (39.4%) was the main component in SO, and eugenol (88.6%) in CO. Both SO and CO significantly reduced airway hyperresponsiveness, and prevented peak expiratory flow, tidal volume increases and perivascular edema formation. Meanwhile, inflammatory cell infiltration was not remarkably affected. In contrast, MPO activity and several inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß, KC, MCP-1, MIP-2, TNF-α) were aggravated by both EOs. This is the first evidence that SO and CO inhalation improve airway function, but enhance certain inflammatory parameters. These results suggest that these EOs should be used with caution in cases of inflammation-associated respiratory diseases.
