RESUMO

Constructal optimization of a plate condenser with fixed heat transfer rate and effective volume in ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) system is performed based on constructal theory. Optimizations of entropy generation rate ( S ˙ g ) in heat transfer process and total pumping power ( P sum ) due to friction loss are two conflicting objectives for a plate condenser. With the conventional optimization method, the plate condenser is designed by taking a composite function (CF) considering both S ˙ g and P sum as optimization objectives, and employing effective length, width, and effective number of heat transfer plates as design variables. Effects of structural parameters of the plate condenser and weighting coefficient of CF on design results are investigated. With a multi-objective genetic algorithm, the plate condenser is designed by simultaneously optimizing S ˙ g and P sum , and the Pareto optimal set is obtained. The results demonstrate that CFs after primary and twice-constructal optimizations are respectively reduced by 7.8% and 9.9% compared with the initial CF, and the effective volume of the plate condenser has a positive impact on the twice minimum CF. Furthermore, the Pareto optimal set can provide better selections for performance optimizations of plate condensers.

RESUMO

To develop totally implantable middle ear and cochlear implants, a miniature microphone that is surgically easy to implant and has a high sensitivity in a sufficient range of audio frequencies is needed. Of the various implantable acoustic sensors under development, only micro electro-mechanical system-type acoustic sensors, which attach to the umbo of the tympanic membrane, meet these requirements. We describe a new vibro-acoustic hybrid implantable microphone (VAHIM) that combines acceleration and sound pressure sensors. Each sensor can collect the vibration of the umbo and sound pressure of the middle ear cavity. The fabricated sensor was implanted into a human temporal bone and the noise level and sensitivity were measured. From the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method is able to provide a wider-frequency band than conventional implantable acoustic sensors.

RESUMO

The prototype system of integrated anaerobic filter with condenser of air conditioner (anaerobic filter-condenser; ANCO) was developed for sustainable water-energy management model in green office building. The ANCO consists of an insulated anaerobic filter (IAF) and condenser that are connected to an existing refrigerant of air conditioner. The system applied waste heat energy from an air conditioner to improve wastewater treatment efficiency. While the performance of air conditioner also could be enhanced by decreasing refrigerant temperature from transferring waste heat through the IAF system for increasing wastewater temperature. The waste heat from air conditioner could stimulate higher microbial activity in the IAF and at the same time, this could increase air conditioner performance. From the overall results, it was found that with wastewater flow rate 180 liter/day, the ANCO prototype could recycle waste heat approximately 2.82 kWh/day. The waste heat transferred into wastewater could increase water temperature up to averagely 35.4 °C. The system performance for removal of suspended solids (SS) and COD were averagely 49.9% and 49.3%, respectively. The coefficient of performance (COPOverall) of air conditioner was increased by 30.25% and electric consumption was decreased by 22.96%. The ANCO system could save electrical energy averagely 2.62 kWh/day. Then, the ANCO system can decrease heat into environment and decrease greenhouse gas emission 602 kgCO2eq/year. Therefore, the ANCO system was pronounced to be the prototype eco-friendly onsite-wastewater treatment system for green office building application.

RESUMO

New mobile devices need microphones with a small size, low noise level, reduced cost and high stability respect to variations of temperature and humidity. These characteristics can be obtained using Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) microphones, which are substituting for conventional electret condenser microphones (ECM). We present the design and modeling of a capacitive dual-backplate MEMS microphone with a novel circular diaphragm (600 µm diameter and 2.25 µm thickness) supported by fifteen polysilicon springs (2.25 µm thickness). These springs increase the effective area (86.85% of the total area), the linearity and sensitivity of the diaphragm. This design is based on the SUMMiT V fabrication process from Sandia National Laboratories. A lumped element model is obtained to predict the electrical and mechanical behavior of the microphone as a function of the diaphragm dimensions. In addition, models of the finite element method (FEM) are implemented to estimate the resonance frequencies, deflections, and stresses of the diaphragm. The results of the analytical models agree well with those of the FEM models. Applying a bias voltage of 3 V, the designed microphone has a bandwidth from 31 Hz to 27 kHz with 3 dB sensitivity variation, a sensitivity of 34.4 mV/Pa, a pull-in voltage of 6.17 V and a signal to noise ratio of 62 dBA. The results of the proposed microphone performance are suitable for mobile device applications.

RESUMO

In the development of full-field transmission X-ray microscopy for basic study in science and technology, a condenser capable of providing intense illumination with high uniformity and stability on tested specimens in order to achieve high-quality images is essential. The latest design of a square-shaped condenser based on diffractive gratings has demonstrated promising uniformity in illumination. This paper describes in more detail the development of such a beam shaper for hard X-rays at 10 keV with regard to its design, manufacture and optical characterization. The effect of the grating profile on the diffracted intensity has been theoretically predicted by numerical simulation using the finite-difference time-domain method. Based on this, the limitations of the grating-based condenser are discussed.

RESUMO

The present study evaluated biofilm growth in AISI 316L stainless steel tubes for seawater-cooled exchanger-condensers that had four different arithmetic mean surface roughness values ranging from 0.14 µm to 1.2 µm. The results of fluid frictional resistance and heat transfer resistance regarding biofilm formation in the roughest surface showed increases of 28.2% and 19.1% respectively, compared with the smoothest surface. The biofilm thickness taken at the end of the experiment showed variations of up to 74% between the smoothest and roughest surfaces. The thermal efficiency of the heat transfer process in the tube with the roughest surface was 17.4% greater than that in the tube with the smoothest surface. The results suggest that the finish of the inner surfaces of the tubes in heat exchanger-condensers is critical for improving energy efficiency and avoiding biofilm adhesion. This may be utilised to reduce biofilm adhesion and growth in the design of heat exchanger-condensers.

RESUMO

Various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath exhaled by patients with lung cancer, healthy controls, and patients with lung cancer who underwent surgery for resection of cancer were analyzed by gas condenser-equipped gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for development of an exhaled breath monitoring prototype system involving metal oxide gas sensors, a gas condenser, and gas chromatography columns. The gas condenser-GC/MS analysis identified concentrations of 56 VOCs in the breath exhaled by the test population of 136 volunteers (107 patients with lung cancer and 29 controls), and selected four target VOCs, nonanal, acetoin, acetic acid, and propanoic acid, for use with the condenser, GC, and sensor-type prototype system. The prototype system analyzed exhaled breath samples from 101 volunteers (74 patients with lung cancer and 27 controls). The prototype system exhibited a level of performance similar to that of the gas condenser-GC/MS system for breath analysis.

RESUMO

Phase contrast microscopy allows the study of highly transparent yet detail-rich specimens by producing intensity contrast from phase objects within the sample. Presented here is a generalized phase contrast illumination schema in which condenser optics are entirely abrogated, yielding a condenser-free yet highly effective method of obtaining phase contrast in transmitted-light microscopy. A ring of light emitting diodes (LEDs) is positioned within the light-path such that observation of the objective back focal plane places the illuminating ring in appropriate conjunction with the phase ring. It is demonstrated that true Zernike phase contrast is obtained, whose geometry can be flexibly manipulated to provide an arbitrary working distance between illuminator and sample. Condenser-free phase contrast is demonstrated across a range of magnifications (4-100×), numerical apertures (0.13-1.65NA) and conventional phase positions. Also demonstrated is condenser-free darkfield microscopy as well as combinatorial contrast including Rheinberg illumination and simultaneous, colour-contrasted, brightfield, darkfield and Zernike phase contrast. By providing enhanced and arbitrary working space above the preparation, a range of concurrent imaging and electrophysiological techniques will be technically facilitated. Condenser-free phase contrast is demonstrated in conjunction with scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM), using a notched ring to admit the scanned probe. The compact, versatile LED illumination schema will further lend itself to novel next-generation transmitted-light microscopy designs. The condenser-free illumination method, using rings of independent or radially-scanned emitters, may be exploited in future in other electromagnetic wavebands, including X-rays or the infrared.

RESUMO

Using an optical system made from fused silica catalogue optical components, third-order nonlinear microscopy has been enabled on conventional Ti:sapphire laser-based multiphoton microscopy setups. The optical system is designed using two lens groups with straightforward adaptation to other microscope stands when one of the lens groups is exchanged. Within the theoretical design, the optical system collects and transmits light with wavelengths between the near ultraviolet and the near infrared from an object field of at least 1 mm in diameter within a resulting numerical aperture of up to 0.56. The numerical aperture can be controlled with a variable aperture stop between the two lens groups of the condenser. We demonstrate this new detection capability in third harmonic generation imaging experiments at the harmonic wavelength of ∼300 nm and in multimodal nonlinear optical imaging experiments using third-order sum frequency generation and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy so that the wavelengths of the detected signals range from ∼300 nm to ∼660 nm.

RESUMO

The effect of coal rank on the composition and toxicity of water effluents resulting from two underground coal gasification experiments with distinct coal samples (lignite and hard coal) was investigated. A broad range of organic and inorganic parameters was determined in the sampled condensates. The physicochemical tests were supplemented by toxicity bioassays based on the luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri as the test organism. The principal component analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were adopted to assist in the interpretation of the raw experimental data, and the multiple regression statistical method was subsequently employed to enable predictions of the toxicity based on the values of the selected parameters. Significant differences in the qualitative and quantitative description of the contamination profiles were identified for both types of coal under study. Independent of the coal rank, the most characteristic organic components of the studied condensates were phenols, naphthalene and benzene. In the inorganic array, ammonia, sulphates and selected heavy metals and metalloids were identified as the dominant constituents. Except for benzene with its alkyl homologues (BTEX), selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), zinc and selenium, the values of the remaining parameters were considerably greater for the hard coal condensates. The studies revealed that all of the tested UCG condensates were extremely toxic to V. fischeri; however, the average toxicity level for the hard coal condensates was approximately 56% higher than that obtained for the lignite. The statistical analysis provided results supporting that the toxicity of the condensates was most positively correlated with the concentrations of free ammonia, phenols and certain heavy metals.

RESUMO

The devices calibrated most frequently by the acoustical measurement services at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) over the 50-year period from 1963 to 2012 were one-inch condenser microphones of three specific standard types: LS1Pn, LS1Po, and WS1P. Due to its long history of providing calibrations of such microphones to customers, NIST is in a unique position to analyze data concerning the long-term stability of these devices. This long history has enabled NIST to acquire and aggregate a substantial amount of repeat calibration data for a large number of microphones that belong to various other standards and calibration laboratories. In addition to determining microphone sensitivities at the time of calibration, it is important to have confidence that the microphones do not typically undergo significant drift as compared to the calibration uncertainty during the periods between calibrations. For each of the three microphone types, an average drift rate and approximate 95 % confidence interval were computed by two different statistical methods, and the results from the two methods were found to differ insignificantly in each case. These results apply to typical microphones of these types that are used in a suitable environment and handled with care. The average drift rate for Type LS1Pn microphones was -0.004 dB/year to 0.003 dB/year. The average drift rate for Type LS1Po microphones was -0.016 dB/year to 0.008 dB/year. The average drift rate for Type WS1P microphones was -0.004 dB/year to 0.018 dB/year. For each of these microphone types, the average drift rate is not significantly different from zero. This result is consistent with the performance expected of condenser microphones designed for use as transfer standards. In addition, the values that bound the confidence intervals are well within the limits specified for long-term stability in international standards. Even though these results show very good long-term stability historically for these microphone types, it is expected that periodic calibrations will always be done to track the calibration history of individual microphones and check for anomalies indicative of shifts in sensitivity.

RESUMO

A membrane condenser (MC) is a novel membrane separation technology that utilizes the hydrophobic nature of porous membranes to capture water vapor from humid gas. Factors such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, and gas composition entering the membrane condenser play a crucial role in water recovery efficiency. This study utilized hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membranes to create multiple identical membrane modules. This research investigated the impact of temperature, flow rate, pressure on the intake side, gas flow on the cooling side, membrane area, and other variables on the performance of the membrane condenser process. This study compared water extraction efficiency under different conditions, focusing on feed flow temperature and sweeping flow. Results showed that at a temperature of 60 °C, the water recovery rate was 24.7%, while a sweep gas flow rate of 4 L/min resulted in a recovery rate of 22.7%. The efficiency of the membrane condenser decreased with higher feed flow rates but increased with larger membrane areas. A proportional relationship between inlet flow and membrane area was observed, suggesting an optimal range of 0.51-0.67 cm/s for both parameters. These findings offer valuable insights for the practical implementation of hydrophobic membrane-based membrane condenser technology.

RESUMO

Catalytic condensers composed of ion gels separating a metal electrode from a platinum-on-carbon active layer were fabricated and characterized to achieve more powerful, high surface area dynamic heterogeneous catalyst surfaces. Ion gels comprised of poly(vinylidene difluoride)/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide were spin coated as a 3.8 µm film on a Au surface, after which carbon sputtering of a 1.8 nm carbon film and electron-beam evaporation of 2 nm Pt clusters created an active surface exposed to reactant gases. Electronic characterization indicated that most charge condensed within the Pt nanoclusters upon application of a potential bias, with the condenser device achieving a capacitance of ∼20 µF/cm2 at applied frequencies of up to 120 Hz. The maximum charge of ∼1014 |e-| cm-2 was condensed under stable device conditions at 200 °C on catalytic films with ∼1015 sites cm-2. Grazing incidence infrared spectroscopy measured carbon monoxide adsorption isobars, indicating a change in the CO* binding energy of ∼19 kJ mol-1 over an applied potential bias of only 1.25 V. Condensers were also fabricated on flexible, large area Kapton substrates allowing stacked or tubular form factors that facilitate high volumetric active site densities, ultimately enabling a fast and powerful catalytic condenser that can be fabricated for programmable catalysis applications.

RESUMO

Microbial colonization on the titanium condenser material (TCM) used in the cooling system leads to biofouling and corrosion and influences the water supply. The primary investigation of the titanium condenser was infrequently studied on characterizing biofilm-forming bacterial communities. Different treatment methods like electropotential charge, ultrasonication, and copper coating of titanium condenser material may influence the microbial population over the surface of the titanium condensers. The present study aimed to catalog the primary colonizers and the effect of different treatment methods on the microbial community. CFU (1.7 × 109 CFU/mL) and ATP count (< 5000 × 10-7 relative luminescence units) showed a minimal microbial population in copper-coated surface biofilm as compared with the other treatments. Live and dead cell result also showed consistency with colony count. The biofilm sample on the copper-coated surface showed an increased dead cell count and decreased live cells. In the metagenomic approach, the microbiome coverage was 10.06 Mb in samples derived from copper-coated TCM than in other treated samples (electropotential charge-17.94 Mb; ultrasonication-20.01 Mb), including control (10.18 Mb). Firmicutes preponderate the communities in the biofilm samples, and Proteobacteria stand next in the population in all the treated condenser materials. At the genus level, Lactobacillaceae and Azospirillaceae dominated the biofilm community. The metagenome data suggested that the attached community is different from those biofilm samples based on the environment that influences the bacterial community. The outcome of the present study depicts that copper coating was effective against biofouling and corrosion resistance of titanium condenser material for designing long-term durability.

RESUMO

An experimental investigation was executed on the solar evacuated tube collector containing a collective condenser unit of heat pipe arrangement attached to a single slope solar desalination system. The brackish water preheating was done by the unique solar collector before entering the still. Performance analysis of the system was carried out with 0.001, 0.002 and 0.003 kg/s brackish water flow rate in the collector and 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 m of brine water depth in a single-slope solar desalination system. The feasibility of the proposed system was evaluated by thermodynamic analysis, embodied energy, CO2 mitigation and economic analysis. Active desalination system with collective condenser heat pipe evacuated tube collector at 0.001 kg/s brackish water flow rate and 0.01 m water depth produced maximum freshwater yield, average daily thermal and exergy efficiency of 3.085 l/m2day, 30.25% and 3.17% respectively. An increase of maximum freshwater yield of 37.11% and average daily thermal efficiency of 43.5% respectively were achieved at a brackish water flow rate of 0.001 kg/s and 0.01 m of basin water depth in comparison with a traditional single slope solar desalination system. The embodied energy of the system was estimated as 630.77 kWh, and 0.001 kg/s and 0.01 m of water depth resulted in the highest earned carbon credit of 16,954.48 INR. The minimum payback period of 2.19 years was achieved at the lower brackish water flow rate and basin water depth of 0.001 kg/s and 0.01 m respectively.

RESUMO

The heat transfer characteristics of evaporative condensers in an R744 air conditioning system were evaluated using the numerical and the experimental methods. Two configurations of condensers were studied: Case 1 with five layers of tubes and Case 2 with eight layers of tubes. In order to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics, the temperature field, the phase change, the pressure distribution, and thermodynamic parameters were considered. For Case 2, it indicated the capability of R744 condensation from the superheated status to the liquified status by analyzing the outlet temperature of the condenser changed from 28.7 °C to 30.3 °C with a change in condensation pressure from 72.6 bar to 68.5 bar. In this study, R744 mass flow rate increases from 14.34 kg/h to 46.08 kg/h, and the pressure drop also increases from 0.23 bar to 0.47 bar for the simulation and 0.4 bar to 0.5 bar for the experiment, respectively. The results indicate that the five-layer configuration causes a higher pressure drop and lower COP than those obtained from the eight-layer one (splitting into two sets for smaller pressure drop). Furthermore, the evaporative condensers using mini tubes that are flooded in the cooling water tank are suitable for the subcritical R744 air conditioning system. In addition, the results obtained from the experimental data are in good agreement with those obtained from the numerical results, with a deviation of less than 5%.

RESUMO

The aim of this work is to present a preliminary study for the design of a digital auscultation system, i.e., a novel wearable device for patient chest auscultation and a digital stethoscope. The development and testing of the electronic stethoscope prototype is reported with an emphasis on the description and selection of sound transduction systems and analog electronic processing. The focus on various microphone technologies, such as micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMSs), electret condensers, and piezoelectronic diaphragms, intends to emphasize the most suitable transducer for auscultation. In addition, we report on the design and development of a digital acquisition system for the human body for sound recording by using a modular device approach in order to fit the chosen analog and digital mics. Tests were performed on a designed phantom setup, and a qualitative comparison between the sounds recorded with the newly developed acquisition device and those recorded with two commercial digital stethoscopes is reported.

RESUMO

Recently, the importance of mechanical facilities in charge of the safety and comfort of occupants in buildings has once again been highlighted in accordance with global social issues such as the spread of COVID-19. In response, various ventilation systems are being developed to improve indoor air quality, and efforts are being made to satisfy the indoor comfort of the occupants. Such advanced facilities allow occupants to secure indoor air quality, while frequent ventilation systems can affect the cooling and heating load in the building, and there is also a problem that it can occupy a relatively large amount of space in the building. This study proposes an integrated, outdoor fan-ventilated cooling device and analyzes its performance and economic efficiency. The EnergyPlus simulation program was used to model two types of systems for comparison: an existing (base) model with a condenser located in the outdoor unit, and a developed model with the condenser integrated within the cooling system. The state of the air passing through the condenser was analyzed prior to comparing the efficiency of the integrated, outdoor fan-ventilated cooling device, followed by an in-depth analysis of the performance and economic efficiency based on total energy consumption. In Case 1, the air passing through the cooling system was approximately 5  °C lower than the base model and showed 11% peak load reduction in comparison to the maximum energy consumption. Additionally, a comparison between regions with different outdoor air temperatures showed an average cost reduction of 16% in Daejeon and Busan City.

RESUMO

The main bottleneck haunting the wide dissemination of solar still is its poor yield per unit area. This study aims to overcome the above bottleneck by augmenting the yield of SS by increasing the surface area available for condensation by incorporating an acrylic chamber filled with water beneath the top glass surface. The solar still incorporated with acrylic basin (ACSS) was operated in two different methodologies and its performance was ascertained and compared with the conventional passive solar still (CPSS). The surface area available for condensation in CPSS and ACSS operating in two different modes were 0.52 m2 and 0.87 m2, respectively. The efficiency of the CPSS and ACSS operated in mode I was 24.28% and 28.94% respectively. On the other hand, the efficiency of the CPSS and ACSS operated in mode II was 26.61% and 31.29% respectively. The rate of evaporation of water from the basin of ACSS operated in mode II is enhanced by 42.74% when compared to the CPSS. The increment in evaporation rate can be attributed not only due to the increment in surface area available for condensation but also due to the supply of hot water present in the acrylic chamber to the basin of the ACSS operated in mode II depending on its yield for every half an hour. Meanwhile, replenishment of water in the acrylic chamber every 30 min by water at 30 °C, abets in reducing the lower surface temperature of acrylic chamber which aid in increasing the temperature difference between water in the basin and lower surface of acrylic chamber. Thus, the productivity of ACSS operated in mode II is higher than that of CPSS by 17.59%.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inhalation of Legionella-containing aerosols generated by cooling towers (CT) and evaporative condensers (EC) where water risk management is not performed correctly has been linked to a high percentage of community outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease (LD). Likewise, microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of the water in these facilities have been associated with this bacterium. The main aim of this study was to assess the risk of Legionella colonization in CT and EC based on the data for microbiological and physicochemical water quality provided by the Environmental Health Department and Laboratory of the City Council of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona, Spain). METHODS: Legionella was analysed in 789 samples collected from 127 CT and EC in 46 companies in Catalonia from 2002 to 2019. A two-step logistic regression analysis was carried out to assess the risk of colonization by Legionella in the studied facilities according to the microbiological (aerobic heterotrophic bacteria) and physicochemical (pH, alkalinity, hardness, turbidity, conductivity, total iron and Langelier Index) water parameters. The optimal cut-off points for the water parameters predictive of Legionella contamination were defined as the values on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve where sensitivity and specificity were jointly maximized. RESULTS: Legionella was isolated in 8.49% of the 789 analysed samples, 22.39% of which were heavily contaminated (with counts higher than 1.0 × 104 CFU/l). L. pneumophila was isolated in 82.09% of the samples, with 41.82% belonging to serogroup 1. Logistic regression analysis revealed that aerobic heterotrophic bacteria concentrations ≥6.90 × 102 CFU/ml [Odds ratios (OR) (95% CI) = 3.56 (1.39-9.43), p = 0.01], a pH ≥ 8.70 [OR (95% CI) = 3.60 (1.34-10.09), p = 0.01], and water hardness ≥5.72 × 102 mg/l [OR (95% CI) = 6.30 (2.34-18.56), p < 0.001] were each independently associated with a higher risk of CT and EC colonization by Legionella. CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows the importance of risk assessment for improving the control measures aimed at preventing or reducing Legionella populations in CT and EC, thus minimizing potential dangers for public health.
