RESUMO

Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration in patients with cancer and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) remains controversial. Concerns exist that it may worsen COVID-19 outcomes by triggering an inflammatory cytokine storm, despite its common use for managing chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN) or febrile neutropenia post-chemotherapy. Here, we determined whether prophylactic or therapeutic G-CSF administration following chemotherapy exacerbates COVID-19 progression to severe/critical conditions in breast cancer patients with COVID-19. Between December 2022 and February 2023, all 503 enrolled breast cancer patients had concurrent COVID-19 and received G-CSF post-chemotherapy, with most being vaccinated pre-chemotherapy. We prospectively observed COVID-19-related adverse outcomes, conducted association analyses, and subsequently performed Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to validate the causal effect of genetically predicted G-CSF or its associated granulocyte traits on COVID-19 adverse outcomes. Only 0.99% (5/503) of breast cancer patients experienced COVID-19-related hospitalization following prophylactic or therapeutic G-CSF administration after chemotherapy. No mortality or progression to severe/critical COVID-19 occurred after G-CSF administration. Notably, no significant associations were observed between the application, dosage, or response to G-CSF and COVID-19-related hospitalization (all p >.05). Similarly, the MR analyses showed no evidence of causality of genetically predicted G-CSF or related granulocyte traits on COVID-19-related hospitalization or COVID-19 severity (all p >.05). There is insufficient evidence to substantiate the notion that the prophylactic or therapeutic administration of G-CSF after chemotherapy for managing CIN in patients with breast cancer and COVID-19 would worsen COVID-19 outcomes, leading to severe or critical conditions, or even death, especially considering the context of COVID-19 vaccination.

PURPOSE: Owing to adverse event following immunization (AEFI) related to autoimmune disorders and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines sharing common biological mechanisms, identifying the risk of AEFIs associated with COVID-19 vaccines remains a critical unmet need. We aimed to assess the potential safety signals for 16 AEFIs and explore co-reported adverse events (AEs) and drugs using the global database of the World Health Organization, VigiBase. METHODS: We assessed the occurrence of 16 AEFIs following COVID-19 vaccination through the Standardized MedDRA Queries group "Immune-mediated/Autoimmune Disorders" from MedDRA and performed a disproportionality analysis using reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information component (IC) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: We identified 25,219 events associated with COVID-19 vaccines in VigiBase. Although rare, we detected four potential safety signals related to autoimmune disorders following COVID-19 vaccination, including ankylosing spondylitis or psoriatic arthritis (ROR 1.86; 95% CI 1.53-2.27), inflammatory bowel disease (ROR 1.77; 95% CI 1.60-1.96), polymyalgia rheumatica (ROR 1.42; 95% CI 1.30-1.55), and thyroiditis (ROR 1.40; 95% CI 1.30-1.50), with positive IC025 values. The top co-reported AEs were musculoskeletal disorders, and immunosuppressants were the most representative co-reported drugs. CONCLUSION: In addressing the imperative to comprehend AEFI related to autoimmune disorders following COVID-19 vaccination, our study identified four potential safety signals. Thus, our research underscores the importance of proactive safety monitoring for the identification of the four AEFIs following COVID-19 vaccination, considering the associated advantages.

Endothelial dysfunction and inflammation contribute to the vascular pathology of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). However, emerging evidence does not support direct infection of endothelial or other vascular wall cells, and thus inflammation may be better explained as a secondary response to epithelial cell infection. In this study, we sought to determine whether lung endothelial or other resident vascular cells are susceptible to productive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and how local complement activation contributes to endothelial dysfunction and inflammation in response to hypoxia and SARS-CoV-2-infected lung alveolar epithelial cells. We found that ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) and TMPRSS2 (transmembrane serine protease 2) mRNA expression in lung vascular cells, including primary human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVECs), pericytes, smooth muscle cells, and fibroblasts, was 20- to 90-fold lower compared with primary human alveolar epithelial type II cells. Consistently, we found that HLMVECs and other resident vascular cells were not susceptible to productive SARS-CoV-2 infection under either normoxic or hypoxic conditions. However, viral uptake without replication (abortive infection) was observed in HLMVECs when exposed to conditioned medium from SARS-CoV-2-infected human ACE2 stably transfected A549 epithelial cells. Furthermore, we demonstrated that exposure of HLMVECs to conditioned medium from SARS-CoV-2-infected human ACE2 stably transfected A549 epithelial cells and hypoxia resulted in upregulation of inflammatory factors such as ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule 1), VCAM-1 (vascular cell adhesion molecule 1), and IL-6 (interleukin 6) as well as complement components such as C3 (complement C3), C3AR1 (complement C3a receptor 1), C1QA (complement C1q A chain), and CFB (complement factor B). Taken together, our data support a model in which lung endothelial and vascular dysfunction during COVID-19 involves the activation of complement and inflammatory signaling and does not involve productive viral infection of endothelial cells.

While coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) begins as a respiratory infection, it progresses as a systemic disease involving multiorgan microthromboses that underly the pathology. SARS-CoV-2 enters host cells via attachment to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. ACE2 is widely expressed in a multitude of tissues, including the lung (alveolar cells), heart, intestine, kidney, testis, gallbladder, vasculature (endothelial cells), and immune cells. Interference in ACE2 signaling could drive the aforementioned systemic pathologies, such as endothelial dysfunction, microthromboses, and systemic inflammation, that are typically seen in patients with severe COVID-19. ACE2 is a component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and is intimately associated with the plasma kallikrein-kinin system (KKS). As many papers are published on the role of ACE and ACE2 in COVID-19, we will review the role of bradykinin, and more broadly the KSS, in SARS-CoV-2-induced vascular dysfunction. Furthermore, we will discuss the possible therapeutic interventions that are approved and in development for the following targets: coagulation factor XII (FXII), tissue kallikrein (KLK1), plasma kallikrein (KLKB1), bradykinin (BK), plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), bradykinin B1 receptor (BKB1R), bradykinin B2 receptor (BKB2R), ACE, furin, and the NLRP3 inflammasome. Understanding these targets may prove of value in the treatment of COVID-19 as well as in other virus-induced coagulopathies in the future.

BACKGROUND: Acute gastrointestinal infections can lead to post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS). Moreover, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is related to long-term gastrointestinal sequelae. In this study, the frequency, disease spectrum, and risk factors for post-infection functional gastrointestinal disease (PI-FGID) in COVID-19 patients and healthy controls were prospectively examined. METHODS: Validated Rome III and Rome IV questionnaires and limited objective assessment were used to assess the incidence of PI-FGID in 190 COVID-19 patients, and 160 healthy controls prospectively followed for 1, 3, and 6 months. RESULTS: Six(3.2%), 1(0.5%), 3(1.6%), 5(2.6%), 6(3.2%)COVID-19 patients had diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, dyspepsia and their overlap at 1 month, respectively, while 4(2.1%), 1(0.5%), 4(2.1%), 4(2.1%), and 6(3.2%)COVID-19 patients had diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, dyspepsia and their overlap at three months, respectively. Furthermore, 2(1.3%), 4(2.5%), and 3(1.9%)healthy controls developed constipation, dyspepsia, and their overlap at one month, respectively (P = 0.193), while 2(1.3%), 4(2.5%), and 2(1.3%)healthy controls developed constipation, dyspepsia and their overlap at three months, respectively (P = 0.286). FGIDs incidence was higher among COVID-19 patients(8.9%) than in healthy controls(3.1%) at 6-month follow-up (P = 0.025). Moreover, 7 (3.7%), 5 (2.6%), 3 (1.6%), and 2 (1.1%) COVID-19 patients developed IBS, functional dyspepsia(FD), functional diarrhea(FDr), functional constipation(FC)at six months, respectively, while only 2 (1.3%) and 3 (1.9%) healthy controls developed IBS and FD at six months, respectively. Notably, gastrointestinal(GI)symptoms at onset were the independent risk factors for post-COVID-19 FGIDs at six months. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 increases new-onset PI-FGID at six months compared with healthy controls. GI symptom at the onset of COVID-19 is an independent risk factor for post-COVID-19 FGIDs.

BackgroundThe current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted a need for easy and safe blood sampling in combination with accurate serological methodology. Venipuncture for testing is usually performed by trained staff at healthcare centres. Long travel distances to healthcare centres in rural regions may introduce a bias of testing towards relatively large communities with closer access. Rural regions are therefore often not represented in population-based data.AimThe aim of this retrospective cohort study was to develop and implement a strategy for at-home testing in a rural region of Sweden during spring 2021, and to evaluate its role to provide equal health care for its inhabitants.MethodsWe developed a sensitive method to measure antibodies to the S-protein of SARS-CoV-2 and optimised this assay for clinical use together with a strategy of at-home capillary blood sampling.ResultsWe demonstrated that our ELISA gave comparable results after analysis of capillary blood or serum from SARS-CoV-2-experienced individuals. We demonstrated stability of the assay under conditions that reflected temperature and humidity during winter or summer. By assessment of capillary blood samples from 4,122 individuals, we could show both feasibility of the strategy and that implementation shifted the geographical spread of testing in favour of rural areas.ConclusionImplementation of at-home sampling enabled citizens living in remote rural areas access to centralised and sensitive laboratory antibody tests. The strategy for testing used here could therefore enable disease control authorities to get rapid access to information concerning immunity to infectious diseases, even across vast geographical distance.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic resulted in adaptation in infection control measures, increased patient transfer, high occupancy of intensive cares, downscaling of non-urgent medical procedures and decreased travelling.AimTo gain insight in the influence of these changes on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevalence in the Netherlands, a country with a low AMR prevalence, we estimated changes in demographics and prevalence of six highly resistant microorganisms (HRMO) in hospitalised patients in the Netherlands during COVID-19 waves (March-June 2020, October 2020-June 2021, October 2021-May 2022 and June-August 2022) and interwaves (July-September 2020 and July-September 2021) compared with pre-COVID-19 (March 2019-February 2020).MethodsWe investigated data on routine bacteriology cultures of hospitalised patients, obtained from 37 clinical microbiological laboratories participating in the national AMR surveillance. Demographic characteristics and HRMO prevalence were calculated as proportions and rates per 10,000 hospital admissions.ResultsAlthough no significant persistent changes in HRMO prevalence were detected, some relevant non-significant patterns were recognised in intensive care units. Compared with pre-COVID-19 we found a tendency towards higher prevalence of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus during waves and lower prevalence of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa during interwaves. Additionally, during the first three waves, we observed significantly higher proportions and rates of cultures with Enterococcus faecium (pooled 10% vs 6% and 240 vs 120 per 10,000 admissions) and coagulase-negative Staphylococci (pooled 21% vs 14% and 500 vs 252 per 10,000 admissions) compared with pre-COVID-19.ConclusionWe observed no substantial changes in HRMO prevalence in hospitalised patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BackgroundDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, large-scale diagnostic testing and contact tracing have proven insufficient to promptly monitor the spread of infections.AimTo develop and retrospectively evaluate a system identifying aberrations in the use of selected healthcare services to timely detect COVID-19 outbreaks in small areas.MethodsData were retrieved from the healthcare utilisation (HCU) databases of the Lombardy Region, Italy. We identified eight services suggesting a respiratory infection (syndromic proxies). Count time series reporting the weekly occurrence of each proxy from 2015 to 2020 were generated considering small administrative areas (i.e. census units of Cremona and Mantua provinces). The ability to uncover aberrations during 2020 was tested for two algorithms: the improved Farrington algorithm and the generalised likelihood ratio-based procedure for negative binomial counts. To evaluate these algorithms' performance in detecting outbreaks earlier than the standard surveillance, confirmed outbreaks, defined according to the weekly number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, were used as reference. Performances were assessed separately for the first and second semester of the year. Proxies positively impacting performance were identified.ResultsWe estimated that 70% of outbreaks could be detected early using the proposed approach, with a corresponding false positive rate of ca 20%. Performance did not substantially differ either between algorithms or semesters. The best proxies included emergency calls for respiratory or infectious disease causes and emergency room visits.ConclusionImplementing HCU-based monitoring systems in small areas deserves further investigations as it could facilitate the containment of COVID-19 and other unknown infectious diseases in the future.

The availability of electronic (e-medical) homecare essentials, such as thermometers, oximeters, and oxygen concentrators during the peaks of the pandemic coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has been witnessed as critical in saving the lives of people across the world. This paper presents a supply order allocation strategy of e-medical homecare essentials (HCEs) in a multi-supplier environment by a distributor while ensuring sufficient and timely availability for emergency consumption during pandemic peaks. The results, based on the actual demand data of HCEs obtained from a regional HCE distributor during the pandemic peak of the second wave in India, i.e. April-May 2021, suggest that a minimum (maximum) average of 94% (98%) availability of e-medical HCEs respectively at pharmacies could be achieved during the peak demand period using the proposed emergency order allocation algorithm in this study. Conclusively, the analysis of this study could generate insightful implications for emergency operations decisions in the HCEs supply-distribution channel.

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has been associated with severe disruptions in health care services, and nonpharmacological measures such as social distancing also have an impact on access to screening tests and on the long-term care of patients with chronic conditions globally. We aimed to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HIV testing and treatment and to describe strategies employed to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on HIV care. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we used secondary data from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Global Quality Program from 44 countries in four continents (Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Africa), and compared information on HIV testing, percentage of positive results, number of in-person appointments, and number of new enrolments in HIV care from 1 January 2020 to 31 August 2020 with the equivalent period in 2019. RESULTS: Despite marked inter-country heterogeneities, we found that COVID-19 was associated with a significant reduction in HIV testing, an increase in the percentage of positive tests, a reduction in the number of in-person consultations and a reduction in the number of new enrolments in care, despite the implementation of several mitigation strategies. The impact of COVID-19 differed across continents and key populations. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that, in the years to come, health care services must be prepared to respond to the impact of COVID-19 on HIV testing and care. Providers and facilities should build on the lessons learned so far to further improve mitigation strategies and establish care priorities for both the pandemic and the post-pandemic periods.

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is an unprecedented event with massive global health and socio-economic impacts on vulnerable populations, especially people living with HIV. The epidemic has severely affected Thailand's economy and potentially impacted the financial and psychological wellbeing of Thai HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: Between 15 June and 10 December 2020, we conducted qualitative interviews with 26 MSM living with HIV in Thailand who participate in an Adam's Love We Care Study. We intentionally recruited individuals who may have experienced a greater impact of COVID-19. Interviews explored worry, stigma and stress surrounding COVID-19, and multiple domains of potential COVID-19 impact: financial/employment, HIV service delivery and antiretroviral (ART) adherence during the first 10 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: Participants perceived themselves as immunocompromised and susceptible, and feared contracting COVID-19. Participants worried that contracting COVID-19 would lead to HIV status disclosure and stigmatization. Participants had considerable worry about job loss as a result of the economic downturn, and some shared challenges associated with relocation and re-engaging with HIV care. Financial stress and lack of basic necessities caused by job losses were commonly reported. Participants reported optimal ART adherence as a consequence of local HIV service delivery responses, convenient ART refills and Adam's Love online support interventions. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights that the COVID-19 pandemic produced high levels of anxiety and concerns about additional stigma among MSM living with HIV. It had a significant negative effect on the daily lives of our participants. These findings indicate a need for the provision of confidential COVID-19 diagnosis and care, relief programmes, vaccination roll-out equity, and addressing employment needs of vulnerable populations.

PURPOSE: Although there have been numerous studies investigating the mental health of individuals during the pandemic, a comparison between countries is still scarce in the literature. To explore this gap, the present study aimed to compare the mental health (i.e., anxiety and depression), quality of life (QoL), and optimism/pessimism among individuals from Brazil and Portugal during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated factors. METHOD: A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and Portugal. Data collection was carried out between May and June 2020, using an online form which was sent through social networks. A total of 2069 participants (1156 from Brazil and 913 from Portugal) were included. Depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), Anxiety (GAD-7), optimism/pessimism (Revised Life Orientation Test - LOT), QoL (WHOQOL-Bref), and sociodemographic, health, and social distancing variables were assessed. Data was analyzed using univariate and multivariate models. RESULTS: There were remarkable differences between Brazil and Portugal in all outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic, including higher levels of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and optimism for the Brazilian individuals and higher levels of QoL and pessimism for the Portuguese individuals. The following factors were associated with the mental health and QoL in both Brazilian and Portuguese populations: gender, age, being a healthcare professional, and days in social distancing. CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that Brazilians were more optimistic during the COVID-19 pandemic, they had lower levels of mental health and QoL as compared to the Portuguese individuals.

It is essential for oncology pharmacists to update their knowledge, skills, and ethical attitudes. The Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Oncology is an academic society for healthcare professionals involved in cancer treatment. It has conducted in-person seminars every year to cultivate the knowledge necessary for practicing advanced cancer medicine. Owing to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the society was obligated to conduct a web-based seminar this year. A questionnaire survey was conducted before and after the webinar to explain how it works and to assess the learning attitudes of beginner and moderately skilled pharmacists in the field of oncology. Questionnaire surveys were conducted with the participants before and after watching the webinar. The questionnaires sought to determine participants' perspectives on the webinar and their knowledge of the seven modules. Of the 1756 webinar attendees, 1661 (94.6%) answered the pre-webinar survey and 1586 (90.3%) answered the post-webinar survey. Results indicate that the median post-webinar knowledge score was significantly higher than the median pre-webinar score (p < 0.001) in all modules. Principal component analysis of the degree of knowledge of seven modules revealed that the improved score group consisted of those from younger age groups, with less experience as pharmacists, non-society members, and those with less experience in past society seminars. Moreover, the web-based seminar provided a uniform learning effect throughout the country without distinguishing between urban and rural learners. The web-based educational program was an acceptable educational tool for Japanese oncology pharmacists.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the ongoing global pandemic, is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recent evidence shows that the virus utilizes angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a spike protein receptor for entry into target host cells. The bovine ACE2 contains key residues for binding to the spike protein receptor-binding domain. This study evaluated the hypothesis that bovine gonadotroph expresses ACE2, and spike protein suppresses luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion from cultured bovine anterior pituitary (AP) cells. ACE2 mRNA expression and ACE2 protein expression were detected in the bovine AP cells using reverse transcription PCR and western blot analysis. Immunofluorescence microscopy analysis with the anti-ACE2 antibody revealed the co-localization of ACE2 and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor on the gonadotroph plasma membrane. Approximately 90% of GnRH receptor-positive cells expressed ACE2, and approximately 46% of ACE2-positive cells expressed the GnRH receptor. We cultured bovine AP cells for 3.5 days and treated them with increasing concentrations (0, 0.07, 0.7, or 7 pM) of recombinant spike protein having both S1 and S2 regions. The spike protein (0.07-7 pM) suppressed both basal and GnRH-induced LH secretion (P < 0.05). Spike protein (0.7-7 pM) suppressed GnRH-induced (P < 0.05), but not basal FSH secretion. In contrast, pre-treatment with ERK 1/2/5 inhibitor (U0126) partially restored the GnRH-induced LH and FSH secretion from the spike protein suppression. Collectively, the results indicate that gonadotrophs express ACE2, a receptor for coronavirus 2 spike protein, which in turn suppresses LH and FSH secretion from AP cells.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effect of health anxiety experienced by elderly individuals during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on their disease perception and treatment compliance. DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted between November 2020 and March 2021. The research data was collected using the Patient Information Form, Health Anxiety Scale (HAS), Disease Perception Scale-Short Form (DPS-SF) and Turkish Modified Morisky Treatment Compliance Scale (MMTCS). RESULTS: Of the 401 study participants, 63.1% were in the 65-69 years age group. The mean HAS, DPS-SF and MMTCS motivation and knowledge level sub-dimension scores of the participants were 18.73 ± 8.87, 54.24 ± 9.98, 1.28 ± 0.74 and 2.04 ± 0.92, respectively. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that the health anxiety and disease perception scores were high among elderly individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic, which hindered their treatment compliance.

This paper presents new evidence on changes in a broad range of teleactivities due to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and investigates how the built environment relates to these changes. The paper relies on survey and geospatial data from Oslo and its surrounding Viken region in Norway. Findings suggest that most teleactivities increased due to COVID-19. Telework, teleconferencing, online learning, telehealth, and virtual meetings with friends and family all increased during COVID-19 compared to the pre-COVID-19 period. The next step in the analysis examined relationships between built environment characteristics and teleactivities before and during COVID-19. Telework and virtual meetings increased to a greater extent in denser neighborhoods than in lower-density neighborhoods. A larger increase in online learning was associated with lower neighborhood density, lower accessibility to public transport, and more local facilities. Numerous local facilities were associated with more frequent telework and virtual meetings both before and during COVID-19. The substantial COVID-19-induced increase in teleactivities found in the study highlights the potential of information and communications technology (ICT) for replacing travel for various activities.

Background and Objectives: Within a year, COVID-19 has advanced from an outbreak to a pandemic, spreading rapidly and globally with devastating impact. The pathophysiological link between COVID-19 and acute kidney injury (AKI) is currently being debated among scientists. While some studies have concluded that the mechanisms of AKI in COVID-19 patients are complex and not fully understood, others have claimed that AKI is a rare complication of COVID-19-related disorders. Considering this information gap and its possible influence on COVID-19-associated AKI management, our study aimed to explore the prevalence of AKI and to identify possible risk factors associated with AKI development among COVID-19 hospitalized patients. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study included 83 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized at the isolation department in a tertiary hospital in Zagazig City, Egypt between June and August 2020. Patients younger than 18 years of age, those diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease, or those on nephrotoxic medications were excluded. All study participants had a complete blood count, liver and renal function tests, hemostasis parameters examined, inflammatory markers, serum electrolytes, routine urinalysis, arterial blood gas, and non-enhanced chest and abdominal computer tomography (CT) scans. Results: Of the 83 patients, AKI developed in 24 (28.9%) of them, of which 70.8% were in stage 1, 8.3% in stage 2, and 20.8% in stage 3. Patients with AKI were older than patients without AKI, with hypertension and diabetes being the most common comorbidities. Risk factors for AKI include increased age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and a higher sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score. Conclusions: AKI occurs in a considerable percentage of patients with COVID-19, especially in elderly males, those with hypertension, diabetes, and a higher sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score. Hence, the presence of AKI should be taken into account as an important index within the risk spectrum of disease severity for COVID-19 patients.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has led to dramatic changes in quality of life, bringing to the forefront of the debate the question of planning and design of pandemic-resilient cities. Using quasi-longitudinal survey data (via a social media campaign) and geospatial data from Greek cities, we evaluate changes in health and well-being during COVID-19 compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, and then explore in detail how specific built environment characteristics in Athens and Thessaloniki relate to health and well-being before and during COVID-19. Results suggest that overall health, life satisfaction, happiness, personal relationships satisfaction, leisure satisfaction, satisfaction with income, and satisfaction with vacations all decreased during COVID-19, while anxiety and back pain increased during COVID-19. The role of the urban built environment in health and well-being was found to differ considerably for the COVID-19 period compared to pre-COVID-19. Proximity to large parks, proximity to numerous local facilities, lower neighborhood density, living further from the city center, and living in a larger dwelling were associated with better health and well-being outcomes during COVID-19. Urban planning and relevant policies that cities adopt should carefully focus on mitigating implications for critical issues such as the quest for sustainable urban development and city forms.

OBJECTIVES: Studies on quality of life (QoL) and academic resilience among nursing students during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic remain underreported. This study investigated the relationship between nursing students' QoL and academic resilience and their predictors during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A descriptive survey, cross-sectional study that used two self-reported questionnaire scales to evaluate the QoL and academic resilience of Filipino nursing students (n=924). Chi-squared test and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: There was no significant association between the QoL and academic resilience to participants' profile variables. Gender and year level of nursing students were significant predictors of QoL and academic resilience. CONCLUSIONS: Our study concludes that a better understanding of the QoL and academic resilience, which are two distinct concepts critical in developing a student's mental well-being, will help stakeholders in nursing education establish effective psychoeducation programs for nursing students.

The knowledge-based economy has drawn increasing attention recently, particularly in online shopping applications where all the transactions and consumer opinions are logged. Machine learning methods could be used to extract implicit knowledge from the logs. Industries and businesses use the knowledge to better understand the consumer behavior, and opportunities and threats correspondingly. The outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has a great impact on the different aspects of our daily life, in particular, on our shopping behaviour. To predict electronic consumer behaviour could be of valuable help for managers in government, supply chain and retail industry. Although, before coronavirus pandemic we have experienced online shopping, during the disease the number of online shopping increased dramatically. Due to high speed transmission of COVID-19, we have to observe personal and social health issues such as social distancing and staying at home. These issues have direct effect on consumer behaviour in online shopping. In this paper, a prediction model is proposed to anticipate the consumers behaviour using machine learning methods. Five individual classifiers, and their ensembles with Bagging and Boosting are examined on the dataset collected from an online shopping site. The results indicate the model constructed using decision tree ensembles with Bagging achieved the best prediction of consumer behavior with the accuracy of 95.3%. In addition, correlation analysis is performed to determine the most important features influencing the volume of online purchase during coronavirus pandemic.
