Lactation curves were estimated for Montbéliarde (MO) × Holstein (HO) and Viking Red (VR) × HO 2-breed crossbred cows and for MO × VR/HO and VR × MO/HO 3-breed crossbred cows and their HO herdmates from test-day observations in 7 high-performance herds that participated in a designed study. Cows calved from 2010 to 2017. Test-day observations from milk recording were used to fit the lactation curves of cows in their first 3 lactations. Lactations of cows were required to have at least 250 DIM and to have at least 6 test days ≤265 DIM. Lactation curves from random regression (RR) were compared for 305-d production (kg), peak production (kg), peak day of production, and production from 4 to 103 DIM (kg), from 104 to 205 DIM (kg), and from 206 to 305 DIM (kg) for milk, fat, and protein. Also, the persistency of production was compared. First-lactation versus second- and third-lactation cows were analyzed separately for both the 2-breed and 3-breed crossbred cows and their respective HO herdmates. Legendre polynomial RR had the best goodness of fit for the lactation curves compared with Ali-Schaeffer and Wilmink RR from the test-day observations of milk, fat, and protein production. For fluid milk production of first-lactation cows, the MO × HO 2-breed crossbreds were not different from their HO herdmates for any of the lactation-curve characteristics, except persistency. However, the VR × HO 2-breed crossbreds had less fluid milk production compared with their HO herdmates. For first lactation, the MO × HO 2-breed crossbreds had more persistency of milk, fat, and protein production compared with their HO herdmates. The first-lactation MO × VR/HO 3-breed crossbreds had more persistency of fluid milk production compared with their HO herdmates. For second and third lactations, both the MO × HO and the VR × HO 2-breed crossbreds had higher fat production compared with their HO herdmates. Furthermore, the MO × HO 2-breed crossbreds had more protein production (kg) in all 3 periods of lactation compared with their HO herdmates. Crossbred cows may have advantages over HO cows for persistency of production in high-performance herds.

Cull cows from dairy farms in the United States account for 10% of the beef market; however, few studies have evaluated the effects of crossbreeding on reasons for disposal and cull value of dairy cows. The objective of the study was to compare reasons for disposal and cull cow value of Holstein and crossbred cows (n = 1,292) in an experimental dairy herd at the University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center, Morris, Minnesota. Cows were Holstein (n = 272), 1964 genetic control Holstein (n = 161), 3-breed crossbred cows (n = 538) composed of the Montbéliarde, Viking Red, and Holstein (MVH) breeds, and 3-breed crossbred cows (n = 321) composed of the Normande, Jersey, and Viking Red (NJV) breeds. The 1964 genetic control Holsteins cows originated from a design initiated at the University of Minnesota for comparison of the1964 Holstein and contemporary Holstein cows selected for production across time. Records spanned from January 2010 to December 2023. Reasons for disposal were recorded in PCDart Herd Management Software, and cull value and body weight were from receipts from livestock cull markets. For all cows, the primary reason for disposal was for reproduction (44.4%), mastitis (18%), other reasons (14.6%), died (10.3%), dairy purposes (8.4%), and low production (4.3%). Independent variables for statistical analysis of cull value were the fixed effects of body weight at time of culling, DIM at culling (0 to 49 DIM, 50 to 99 DIM, 100 to 149 DIM, 150 to 199 DIM, 200 to 249 DIM, 250 to 299 DIM, 300 to 350 DIM, and 350+ DIM), year (2010 to 2023), season (spring, summer, autumn, winter), parity (1, 2, 3, 4, 5+), primary reason for culling, breed group and sire breed group nested within breed group. Least squares means for bodyweight at culling was 558 kg for Holsteins, 543 kg for 1964 Holsteins, 551 kg for MVH crossbred cow, and 499 kg for NJV crossbred cows. For the analysis across time, 2014 had the highest cull value ($1,126.98) and 2020 had the lowest gross cull value ($515.21). Cows culled greater than 300 DIM had the highest cull value and cows culled less than 50 DIM had the lowest cull value. Cows culled during the spring and summer had higher cull value compared with cows culled during the autumn and winter. The Holstein cows ($730.04) had lower gross value compared with 1964 Holsteins ($804.38) cows and MVH ($767.39) cows. The NJV ($771.39) cows were not different from crossbreds sired by Montbeliarde, Viking Red, and Holstein bulls. Results for comparisons of breed group are from one experimental herd, so inferences to the wider dairy cow population should be undertaken with caution. In summary, dairy producers may receive greater cull value from crossbred cows compared with Holstein cows.

Milk production and overall dairy farm economics depend on rearing dairy heifers. This study investigated the presence of a genotype by environment interaction in Holstein (HOL), Nordic Red Dairy Cattle (RDC), and their F1 crossbreeds (HOLxRDC) when provided different feed rations. The aim of our study was to assess how different energy concentrations in feed rations affect growth, body condition scores, feed intake, and feed efficiency in the 3 groups during the prepubertal period. The 3 breed groups were randomly allocated to receive either a standard or a low energy feed ration. HOL heifers exhibited reduced growth and a lower body condition score when they were fed the low energy feed ration. In contrast, the RDC heifers demonstrated similar growth rates with the different feed rations and maintained similar body condition scores irrespective of feed energy concentration. HOLxRDC crossbred heifers performed as an intermediate between the HOL and RDC groups. There were significant differences in dry matter intake and energy intake in the HOL and HOLxRDC groups depending on feed ration treatment. The RDC heifers had similar feed intake irrespective of treatment. There were no significant differences in the feed conversion ratio between breeds and feed treatments. These results indicate the presence of a genotype by environment interaction in prepubertal HOL and RDC heifers in response to differences in feed ration treatment. Due to the influence of prepubertal growth on future milk production, reproduction, and health status, it is important to be aware of breed-specific requirements during the prepubertal period, particularly in mixed-breed and crossbred groups, to optimize growth rates and production potential.

This study aimed to set up a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach at the level of individual animals to assess the effects of a 3-breed crossbreeding program on the environmental impact of cows. The study involved 564 cows, 279 purebred Holstein Friesian (HO) and 285 crossbred cows (CR), that originated from a 3-breed crossbreeding program based on the rotational use of Viking Red, Montebèliarde, and HO sires and kept in 2 dairy herds of northern Italy (224 and 340 cows/herd, respectively). The reference unit of the LCA model was the lifetime of cows, from the birth to culling or death. Data were collected at different levels: individual animal-based data referred to the whole life (birth, calving, dry, cull or death dates, and milk production); individual test-date collection of body measures and BCS, used to predict BW and to estimate energy requirements; common farm-based data concerning herd management (diets composition, and materials used). Data were used to compute DMI, milk and milk components production, gross income (GI), and income over feed costs (IOFC) pertaining to the lifespan of cows. An individual LCA-derived approach was set up to compute global warming potential (GWP), acidification and eutrophication potential (AP and EP, respectively), and land occupation (LO), which have been associated with different functional units (cow in her whole life or per day of life; kilograms of milk fat plus protein, and GI and IOFC [in euros] produced in the herd life). Data were analyzed using a generalized linear model including the fixed effects of genetic group (CR vs. HO), farm, and their interaction (genetic group × farm). Compared with HO, CR cows completed more lactations (+12%), had earlier first calving (-2 wk), yielded more fat plus protein in milk both in the lifespan (+8%) and per day of life (+4%). Concerning the environmental impact, when compared with HO herd mates, CR cows had nominal greater emissions per cow in the whole life, similar emissions per day of life and ∼3% lower GWP, AP, and EP per kilogram of fat plus protein yielded in lifespan. Income over feed costs per unit of emission tended to be ∼4% greater in CR compared with HO cows. Also, the use of land tended to be lower in CR compared with HO in most indicators considered. In conclusion, LCA could be adapted to represent individual animals. Moreover, managing dairy cows according to a 3-breed rotational crossbreeding scheme may be regarded as a strategy that can contribute to mitigate the emissions and to improve the environmental impact of dairy operations.

Crossbreeding plays a pivotal role within pig breeding programmes, aiming to maximize heterosis and improve reproductive traits in crossbred maternal lines. Nevertheless, there is evidence indicating that the performance of reciprocal crosses between two genetic lines might exhibit variability. These variations in performance can be attributed to differences in the correlations between gametic effects, acting as either sire or dam, within purebred and crossbred populations. To address this issue, we propose a multivariate gametic model that incorporates up to four correlated gametic effects for each parental population. The model is employed on a data set comprising litter size data (total number of piglets born-TNB- and number of piglets born alive-NBA-) derived from a reciprocal cross involving two Iberian pig populations: Entrepelado and Retinto. The data set comprises 6933 records from 1564 purebred Entrepelado (EE) sows, 4995 records from 1015 Entrepelado × Retinto (ER) crosses, 2977 records from 756 Retinto × Entrepelado (RE) crosses and 7497 records from 1577 purebred Retinto (RR) sows. The data set is further supplemented by a pedigree encompassing 6007 individual-sire-dam entries. The statistical model also included the order of parity (with six levels), the breed of the service sire (five levels) and the herd-year-season effects (141 levels). Additionally, the model integrates random dominant and permanent environmental sow effects. The analysis employed a Bayesian approach, and the results revealed all the posterior estimates of the gametic correlations to be positive. The range of the posterior mean estimates of the correlations varied across different gametic effects and traits, with a range between 0.04 (gametic correlation between the paternal effects for purebred and the maternal for crossbred in Retinto) and 0.53 (gametic correlation between the paternal effects for purebred and the paternal for crossbred in Entrepelado). Furthermore, the posterior mean variance estimates of the maternal gametic effects were consistently surpassed those for paternal effects within all four populations. The results suggest the possible influence of imprinting effects on the genetic control of litter size, and underscore the importance of incorporating crossbred data into the breeding value predictions for purebred individuals.

Body composition traits are complex traits controlled by minor genes and, in hybrid populations, are impacted by additive and nonadditive effects. We aimed to identify candidate genes and increase the accuracy of genomic prediction of body composition traits in crossbred pigs by including dominance genetic effects. Genomic selection (GS) and genome-wide association studies were performed on seven body composition traits in 807 Yunong-black pigs using additive genomic models (AM) and additive-dominance genomic models (ADM) with an imputed high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array and the Illumina Porcine SNP50 BeadChip. The results revealed that the additive heritabilities estimated for AM and ADM using the 50 K SNP data ranged from 0.20 to 0.34 and 0.11 to 0.30, respectively. However, the ranges of additive heritability for AM and ADM in the imputed data ranged from 0.20 to 0.36 and 0.12 to 0.30, respectively. The dominance variance accounted for 23% and 27% of the total variance for the 50 K and imputed data, respectively. The accuracy of genomic prediction improved by 5% on average for 50 K and imputed data when dominance effect were considered. Without the dominance effect, the accuracies for 50 K and imputed data were 0.35 and 0.38, respectively, and 0.41 and 0.43, respectively, upon considering it. A total of 12 significant SNP and 16 genomic regions were identified in the AM, and 14 significant SNP and 21 genomic regions were identified in the ADM for both the 50 K and imputed data. There were five overlapping SNP in the 50 K and imputed data. In the AM, a significant SNP (CNC10041568) was found in both body length and backfat thickness traits, which was in the PLAG1 gene strongly and significantly associated with body length and backfat thickness in pigs. Moreover, a significant SNP (CNC10031356) with a heterozygous dominant genotype was present in the ADM. Furthermore, several functionally related genes were associated with body composition traits, including MOS, RPS20, LYN, TGS1, TMEM68, XKR4, SEMA4D and ARNT2. These findings provide insights into molecular markers and GS breeding for the Yunong-black pigs.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate growth, body development and ingestive behavior of Nelore and crossbred heifers. Twenty-two contemporary heifers (eight Nelore, seven Nelore × Angus (½ Angus) and seven Nelore × Pantaneiro (½ Pantaneiro) crosses) were evaluated. The variables evaluated were weight, subcutaneous fat thickness [assessed by ultrasound in the longissimus dorsi (SFT) and biceps femoris (SFTP8)] morphometric measures and ingestive behavior (determined between 7 am and 5 pm). The daily gain differed between the breeds (P < 0.05), being greater for the ½ Pantaneiro than Nelore and equal to ½ Angus at the end of the study. The ½ Angus heifers differed (P < 0.01) from the other breeds for SFT (4.36 mm), with no difference between Nelore (2.77 mm) and ½ Pantaneiro (3.38 mm). The SFTP8 was greater (P < 0.01) (5.36 mm) in ½ Angus heifers than t others crossbreed, and greater in ½ Pantaneiro than in Nelore (4.28 vs 3.29 mm). The heart girth and rump width between the ilia were larger (P < 0.01) for the ½ Angus than ½ Pantaneiro and Nelore (169 cm; 41.6 cm, respectively). Substernal height was greatest (P < 0.01) for the Nelore (69.1 cm), reflecting the greater anterior and posterior height. The ½ Angus spent the longest time (P < 0.05) walking and less time grazing. Idleness also differed (P < 0.05) throughout the day. Crossbred heifers exhibited better performance and development than Nelore. The grazing pattern of ½ Pantaneiro heifers was identical to Nelore, but walked less, gained more weight, and exhibited better carcass finishing.

The study compared nutrient intake and growth performance of local chickens to that of local x broiler crossbreds under scavenging and indoor conventional systems. A total of 48 male and 48 female chickens for each of the two chicken types were allocated to four outdoor free-range pens. The chickens were allowed to scavenge whilst being supplemented with sorghum plus kitchen waste and broiler growers from week 5 to week 13 of age. The same design was repeated using the indoor conventional system. Local chickens and their crosses with broilers had higher growth rates under the scavenging system than the indoor production system (P < 0.05). Local chickens and their crosses with broilers had the same growth rates when fed the same diet (P > 0.05). Crop and gizzard contents from local chickens had the same crude protein as their crosses with broilers under both systems (P > 0.05). The crude protein values of crop and gizzard contents ranged from 25.4 to 30.4%. Crop and gizzard contents from scavenging chickens had energy content ranging from 16.2 to 17.1 MJ/Kg which was lower (P < 0.05) than that from chickens under the indoor conventional system (20.3 to 25.8 kJ/Kg). Iron content ranged from 655.7 to 1619.4 mg/Kg in scavenging chickens and 156.1 to 621.4 mg/Kg in enclosed chickens. Chickens of the same type had higher iron content in their crop and gizzard contents under the scavenging system than the conventional system (P < 0.05). Crossbreds between local chickens and broilers matches the scavenging abilities of the local chickens but have lower growth rates under the scavenging system.

As an intraspecific outcrossing mechanism, self-incompatibility (SI) widely adopted by hermaphroditic plants is usually controlled by a polymorphic multi-allelic S locus. Typically, six molecular types of SI have been found, including type-I controlled by the pistil S S-RNase and pollen S SLFs commonly spread in Plantaginaceae, Solanaceae, Rosaceae and Rutaceae, type-II by SRK and SCR in Brassicaceae, type-III by PrsS and PrpS in Papaveraceae, type-IV by CYP-GLO2-KFB-CCM-PUM in Primulaceae, type-V by TsSPH1-TsYUC6-TsBAHD in Turneraceae and type-VI by HPS10-S and DUF247I-S in Poaceae, with type-I characterized as a non-self recognition system but types-II, -III and -VI self ones. Furthermore, remarkable progresses have been made in their origin and evolutionary mechanisms recently. Among them, type-I SI possessed a single origin in the most recent common ancestor of eudicots and types II-V dynamically evolved following its losses, while type-VI SI exclusively existed in monocot Poaceae may be regained after the loss of the ancient type-I. Here, we mainly review the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms of angiosperm SI systems, thus providing a helpful reference for their theoretical research and breeding application.

This study aimed to compare growth performance between Moghani sheep and crossbred lambs resulting from crossbreeding between Moghani pure breed ewes and the lines of rams e.g., Texel Tamlet, Texel Dalzell, Booroola Merino, and Booroola Romney. The first visible phenotypic characteristic was the presence of lean tail in all F1 crossbred lambs, whereas Moghani pure sheep is a well-known large fat-tailed breed. Moreover, the first generation of backcross (BC1) lambs from mating four types of F1 crossbred rams with Moghani pure ewes revealed lean-tailed to short fat-tailed. Comparative results showed that the F1 crossbred lambs had significantly (p < 0.0001) greater birth weight (BW) than the Moghani pure breed lambs. Despite no significant differences observed between Moghani pure breed sheep and its F1 crossbred lambs for body weight at pre-weaning, but F1 crossbred lambs achieved significantly (p < 0.0001) greater body weight after weaning compared to Moghani sheep. The growth performance of BC1 lambs was outperformed than F1 crossbred and Moghani sheep. These results encourage the continuation of the Moghani sheep crossbreeding programs to improve overall lamb growth, particularly post-weaning and to benefit from a better reproductive efficiency by elimination or reduction of the fat tail.

Swedish Red and White × Holstein (S×H) cows were compared with pure Holstein (HOL) cows for fertility and survival traits in 2 commercial dairy farms in central-southern Córdoba province, Argentina, over 6 years (2008-2013). The following traits were evaluated: first service conception rate (FSCR), overall conception rate (CR), number of services per conception (SC), days open (DO), mortality rate, culling rate, survival to subsequent calvings, and length of productive life (LPL). The data set consisted of 506 lactations from 240 S×H crossbred cows and 1,331 lactations from 576 HOL cows. The FSCR and CR were analyzed using logistic regression, DO and LPL were analyzed using a Cox's proportional hazards regression model, and differences of proportions were calculated for mortality rate, culling rate, and survival to subsequent calvings. The S×H cows were superior to HOL cows in overall lactations for all the fertility traits (+10.5% FSCR, +7.7% CR, -0.5 SC, and 35 fewer DO). During the first lactation, S×H cows were superior to HOL cows for all fertility traits (+12.8% FSCR, +8.0% CR, -0.4 SC, and 34 fewer DO). In the second lactation, S×H cows exhibited lower SC (-0.5) and 21 fewer DO than HOL cows. In the third or greater lactations, S×H cows showed higher FSCR (+11.0%) and CR (+12.2%), lower SC (-0.8), and 44 fewer DO than pure HOL cows. In addition, S×H cows had a lower mortality rate (-4.7%) and a lower culling rate (-13.7%) than HOL cows. Due to the higher fertility and lower mortality and culling rates, the S×H cows had higher survival to the second (+9.2%), third (+16.9%), and fourth (+18.7%) calvings than HOL cows. Because of these results, S×H cows had longer LPL (+10.3 mo) than HOL cows. These results indicate that S×H cows had higher fertility and survival than HOL cows on commercial dairy farms in Argentina.

The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters and individual and maternal breed, heterosis, and recombination loss effects for milk production and fertility traits of Holstein Friesian (F), Jersey (J), and crossbred Holstein Friesian and Jersey (F × J) cows milked once daily (OAD) or twice daily (TAD) in New Zealand. Data on 278,776 lactations from 30,217 OAD and 170,680 TAD milking cows across 644 spring-calving herds were available. Genetic parameters and individual and maternal breed, heterosis, and recombination loss estimates were obtained from univariate animal models. Heritability and repeatability estimates for milk production, milk composition, and fertility traits were consistent across the milking frequencies. Heritability estimates for yields of milk, fat, protein, and lactose varied between 0.21 and 0.29 in OAD and TAD. Heritability estimates for fertility traits ranged from 0.01 to 0.08 in both populations, and estimates were slightly greater in TAD than OAD milking cows. In both milking populations, individual breed effects for yields were in favor of F cows; however, maternal breed effects for yields were in favor of J dams. Jersey cows were more fertile than the F cows in both milking populations, but maternal breed effects for fertility traits were in favor of F dams. Individual heterosis effects were favorable for all traits and were consistent across milking regimens. Crossbred F × J cows had significantly shorter intervals from start of mating to first service and from start of mating to conception, and a higher proportion of 3-wk submission, 3-wk in calf, and 3-wk calving relative to the average of purebred F and J cows. Recombination loss effects were not always unfavorable for production and fertility traits, but most estimates were small with larger standard errors. Favorable maternal heterosis effects were associated with production traits in both milking systems, but maternal heterosis effects were less likely to influence reproductive performance.

Culled dairy cows represent a considerable source of meat production, but their carcasses may vary greatly in quality because of the wide variation in the age, stage of lactation, breed, body condition, and other characteristics of the cows at slaughter. However, the effect of crossbreeding on the value of culled cows has so far received little investigation. The aim of this observational study was to compare a range of carcass attributes of cull cows from 3-breed rotational crossbreeding using Viking Red, Montbéliarde (MO), and Holstein (HO) bulls with those of HO purebred cows. Data on 1,814 dairy cows were collected. Cows were reared together in one herd and slaughtered in 4 slaughterhouses. The carcass weight, fleshiness, and fatness scores, the total value, and the price (€/kg) of each cow carcass were recorded. The culling of a few cows in the sample (n = 86) was classified by the farm manager as "urgent" following a diagnosis of injury or sickness, and this information was recorded. Carcass traits were analyzed with a mixed model which included the fixed effects of parity, days in milk, genetic group (purebred HO, 787 cows, and crossbred cows, classified according to the breed of sire within crossbreds, with 309, 428, and 290 cows sired by Viking Red, MO, and HO bulls, respectively), and interactions, and the random effects of month × year of the date of slaughter, and slaughterhouse. Logistic regression was used to investigate the association of parity, days in milk and purebred or crossbred origin with unplanned, "urgent" culling compared with regular culling. Average carcass weight across genetic groups was 297 ± 65 kg, average price €2.03 ± 0.53/kg, and average value €631 ± 269. Compared with HO, crossbred carcasses were 7 to 12% heavier depending on the breed of sire, were graded + 0.12 to + 0.28 units higher for fleshiness and + 0.26 to + 0.30 units higher for fatness, and fetched an 8 to 11% higher price. As a consequence, compared with purebred HO, carcasses from crossbreds had 15 to 24% higher value (€84 to €133 more per cow), with crossbred cows sired by MO showing the greatest values. Moreover, compared with the HO cows, the crossbred cows had a 37% lower risk of being urgently removed from the herd, which raises welfare concerns and may reduce the salvage value of cull cows. Because cull cows represent a supplemental source of income for dairy farmers, the greater overall value of crossbred cull cows should be taken into account in evaluating the economic effectiveness of crossbreeding schemes.

This study aimed to compare rotational 3-breed crossbred cows of Viking Red, Montbéliarde, and Holstein breeds with purebred Holstein cows for a range of body measurements, as well as different metrics of the cows' productivity and production efficiency. The study involved 791 cows (440 crossbreds and 351 purebreds), that were managed across 2 herds. Within each herd, crossbreds and purebreds were reared and milked together, fed the same diets, and managed as one group. The heart girth, height at withers, and body length were measured, and body condition score (BCS) was determined on all the cows on a single test day. The body weight (BW) of 225 cows were used to develop an equation to predict BW from body size traits, parity, and days in milk, which was then used to estimate the BW of all the cows. Equations from the literature were used to estimate body protein and lipid contents using the predicted BW and BCS. Evidence suggests that maintenance energy requirements may be closely related to body protein mass, and Holstein and crossbred cows may be different in body composition. Therefore, we computed the requirements of net energy for maintenance (NEM) on the basis either of the metabolic weight (NEM-MW: 0.418 MJ/kg of metabolic BW) or of the estimated body protein mass according to a coefficient (NEM-PM: 0.631 MJ/kg body protein mass) computed on the subset comprising the purebred Holstein. On the same day when body measurements were collected, individual test-day milk yield and fat and protein contents were retrieved once from the official Italian milk recording system, and milk was sampled to determine fresh cheese yield. Measures of NEM were used to scale the production traits. Statistical analyses of all variables included the fixed effects of herd, days in milk, parity, and genetic group (purebred Holstein and crossbred), and the herd × genetic group interaction. External validation of the equation predicting BW yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average bias of -4.95 ± 36.81 kg. The crossbreds had similar predicted BW and NEM-MW compared with the Holsteins. However, NEM-PM of crossbreds was 3.8% lower than that of the Holsteins, due to their 11% greater BCS and different estimated body composition. The crossbred cows yielded 4.8% less milk and 3.4% less milk energy than the purebred Holsteins. However, the differences between genetic groups were no longer significant when the production traits were scaled on NEM-PM, suggesting that the crossbreds and purebreds have the same productive ability and efficiency per unit of body protein mass. In conclusion, measures of productivity and efficiency that combine the cows' production capability with traits related to body composition and the energy cost of production seem to be more effective criteria for comparing crossbred and purebred Holstein cows than just milk, fat, and protein yields.

Many local dairy cattle breeds are facing genetic extinction due to a large proportion of foreign genes, which have been introgressed in the past. In addition, the performance gap to popular high-yielding breeds is increasing, resulting in a risk of numeric extinction. In the present simulation study, a genomic rotational crossbreeding scheme with the high-yielding German Holstein breed and the numerically small German Angler breed was analysed with the aim to utilize heterosis effects in the crossbred animals. Simultaneously inbreeding was controlled, and the amount of Holstein introgression observed in the Angler breed was reduced. Different scenarios of implementing OCS methods for Angler individuals were evaluated, which differed in their restrictions regarding kinship, native kinship, as well as the amount of genetic contributions from German Holstein. The results showed that rotational crossbreeding can result in superior crossbred offspring compared to the purebred parental lines, whereby OCS methods can simultaneously restrict the increase in inbreeding and keep the Holstein contributions at their current level. However, reducing the amount of migrant contributions while restricting the increase in the native kinship in Angler turned out to be a costly restriction. The reason was that Angler with low genetic contributions from Holsteins tended to have similar Angler ancestors. Consequently, reducing Holstein contributions would considerably increase the native kinship in Angler if it were not constrained. The constraint on the native kinship made a constraint on the conventional kinship superfluous and caused it to increase at a much lower rate than envisaged. This led to both, a high genetic diversity and a low genetic gain. The high genetic diversity in Angler also resulted in lower and oscillating heterosis effects in the crossbred animals. Thus, the reduction of migrant contribution did not increase heterosis effects in the crossbred offspring, and did not result in superior crossbred offspring in general.

Ningxiang pigs are a renowned indigenous pig breed in China, known for their meat quality, disease resistance, and environmental adaptability. In recent decades, consumer demand for meats from indigenous breeds has grown significantly, fueling the selection and crossbreeding of Ningxiang pigs (NXP). The latter has raised concerns about the conservation and sustainable use of Ningxiang pigs as an important genetic resource. To address these concerns, we conducted a comprehensive genomic study using 2242 geographically identified Ningxiang pigs. The estimated genomic breed composition (GBC) suggested 2077 pigs as purebred Ningxiang pigs based on a ≥94% NXP-GBC cut-off. The remaining 165 pigs were claimed to be crosses, including those between Duroc and Ningxiang pigs and between Ningxiang and Shaziling pigs, and non-Ningxiang pigs. Runs of homozygosity (ROH) were identified in the 2077 purebred Ningxiang pigs. The number and length of ROH varied between individuals, with an average of 32.14 ROH per animal and an average total length of 202.4 Mb per animal. Short ROH (1-5 Mb) was the most abundant, representing 66.5% of all ROH and 32.6% of total ROH coverage. The genomic inbreeding estimate was low (0.089) in purebred Ningxiang pigs compared to imported western pig breeds. Nine ROH islands were identified, pinpointing candidate genes and QTLs associated with economic traits of interest, such as reproduction, carcass and growth traits, lipid metabolism, and fat deposition. Further investigation of these ROH islands and candidate genes is anticipated to better understand the genomics of Ningxiang pigs.

The present study estimates additive and non-additive effects on egg production traits in genotypes generated through pure mating and reciprocal crossing of Fayoumi (FM) with Koekoek (KK) and White Leghorn (WL). Age at first egg (AFE) and body weight at first egg (BWAFE) were determined when the first bird in the pen laid its first egg, and egg weight at first egg (EWAFE) was the average weight of eggs laid consecutively during the first 10 days. Egg number (EN) and egg weight (EW) were recorded daily from AFE to 40 weeks of age. Egg mass (EM) was the product of EN and EW. EN of hens initially housed and hens alive during the experiment were used to calculate hen-housed egg production (HHEP) and hen-day egg production (HDEP), respectively. All the traits showed statistically significant differences among the genotypes. The results revealed the importance of additive and non-additive effects, where purebred effect (PE), general combining ability (GCA), maternal effect (ME), specific combining ability (SCA), and residual reciprocal effect (RRE) significantly affected most of the traits. The KK and WL had a higher PE, and GCA was highest in KK, with FM and WL showing a higher ME. The FM x WL had higher SCA and RRE. The KK x FM and FM x WL outperformed their main and reciprocal crosses, respectively, and purebred contemporaries. Therefore, a synthetic breeding program involving KK as a sire and FM, WL, FM x WL, and KK x FM as a dam would be feasible.

Producers require an accurate predictive tool that can determine the optimal point of slaughter based on fat depth. The modelling of fat deposition with a simple mathematical model could supply in this need. Dohne Merino and Merino ewes were crossed with Dorper, Dormer and Ile de France rams or rams of their own breeds to create two purebred (Dohne Merino and Merino) and six crossbred groups (Dohne x Dorper, Dohne x Dormer, Dohne x Ile de France, Merino x Dorper, Merino x Dormer and Merino x Ile de France) of offspring. Fat deposition of four lambs of each sex per genotypic group was monitored from 80 to 360 days using ultrasound, and the data subsequently fitted to various equations and evaluated for goodness of fit. A linear fitting of fat depth to age (R2 > 0.77) and live weight (R2 > 0.56) were deemed to provide the best fit. The slope parameters of the equations indicated that ewes deposited fat faster than rams and that Dorper crosses had the highest fat deposition rate. An attempt was also made to model loin muscle growth, but the model fit was judged to be unsatisfactory. The predictive models developed here are deemed suitable for inclusion in feedlot management systems to aid in the production of optimally classified lamb carcasses.

The current study evaluates additive and non-additive genetic variances for egg quality traits in six genotypes generated through pure mating and reciprocal crossing of Fayoumi (FM) with Koekoek (KK) and White Leghorn (WL). For each genotype, measurements were taken on 30 eggs randomly sampled at 32, 36, and 40 weeks of age to evaluate both external and internal egg quality parameters. The results revealed significant differences (P < 0.001) among the genotypes in all external quality traits and most internal quality traits, including yolk weight (YW), albumen weight (AW), and yolk height (YH). The results also showed that variations due to purebred effect (PE), general combining ability (GCA), maternal effect (ME), and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant in most traits, which reflects that both additive and non-additive variances are important for the inheritances of the parameters investigated. In most of the traits, the ME and PE were higher in KK and WL, while GCA was higher in KK and FM. The FM x WL had higher SCA than FM x KK. The results suggest the likelihood of genetic improvement in these genotypes through selection and crossbreeding strategies and/or a combination of the two.

This is the first study to compare the effects of parturition time and photoperiod on milk yield, quality, and somatic cell count (SCC) traits in pure and crossbred doe genotypes reared with supplementary feeding at various physiological stages in a mountain-pasture grazing system. Data were collected from Hair, Alpine × Hair F1 (AHF1), and Saanen × Hair F1 (SHF1) crossbred doe genotypes with an average live weight of 49.60±0.40 kg. Hair doe had significantly lower (P < 0.001) milk yields and lactation length, but higher (P < 0.001) fat, protein, and lactose contents and electrical conductivity (EC) than AHF1 and SHF1 crossbred doe genotypes. Does giving parturition in the hours of darkness had higher (P < 0.05) milk volume and lower (P < 0.05) SCC compared to does giving parturition in the hours of daylight. Daily milk yield was positively correlated with daylight (P < 0.05; r = 0.50 to 0.53), while milk fat, protein, and lactose contents were negatively correlated with daylight (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001; r = -0.51 to -0.82, respectively) in Hair, AHF1, and SHF1 crossbred doe genotypes. Lactation stages and daily milk yield levels significantly affected (P < 0.05) the SCC, pH, total solids, and freezing point of milk. It was concluded that the milk yield traits of goats can be rapidly improved by better modelling of physiological and environmental variations such as photoperiod, reproduction, and hormonal effects in sustainable production systems.
