RESUMO

The efficient removal of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS), is crucial due to their foul odor and corrosive potential in sewer systems. Biofilters (BFs) offer promise for VSCs removal, but face challenges related to pH control and changing conditions at full scale. Two BFs, operated under acidophilic conditions for 78 days, were evaluated for their performance at varying inlet concentrations and empty bed residence times (EBRTs). BF1, incorporating 4-6 mm marble limestone for pH control, outperformed BF2, which used NaHCO3 in the nutrient solution. BF1 displayed better resilience, maintained a stable pH of 4.6 ± 0.6, and achieved higher maximum elimination capacities (ECmax, 41 mg DMS m-3 h-1 (RE 38.3%), 146 mg DMDS m-3 h-1 (RE 83.1%), 47 mg DMTS m-3 h-1 (RE 93.1%)) at an EBRT of 56 s compared to BF2 (9 mg DMS m-3 h-1 (RE 7.1%), 9 mg DMDS m-3 h-1 (RE 4.8%) and 11 mg DMTS m-3 h-1 (RE 26.6%)). BF2 exhibited pH stratification and decreased performance after feeding interruptions. The biodegradability of VSCs followed the order DMTS > DMDS > DMS, and several microorganisms were identified contributing to VSCs degradation in BF1, including Bacillus (14%), Mycobacterium (11%), Acidiphilium (7%), and Acidobacterium (3%).

During the last decade we experienced a surge in the number of glucose lowering agents that can be used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. Especially important are the discoveries that sodium glucose co-transporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) improve patients' cardiovascular and renal outcomes. Accordingly, various medical associations have updated their guidelines for the treatment of diabetes in this new era. Though not agreeing on every issue, these position-statements generally share a detailed and often complex workflow that may be too complicated for the busy and overworked primary care setting, where the majority of patients with type 2 diabetes are managed in many countries. Other guidelines, generally those from the cardiology associations focus primarily on the population of patients with high risk for or pre-existing cardiovascular disease, which represent only the minority of patients with type 2 diabetes. We believe that we should re-define SGLT2i and GLP-1 RA as diabetes/disease modifying drugs (DMDs) given the recent evidence of their cardiovascular and renal benefits. Based on this definition we have designed a SIMPLE approach in order to assist primary care teams in selecting the most appropriate therapy for their patients. We believe that most subjects newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should initiate early combination therapy with metformin and a prognosis changing DMD. The decision whether to use GLP-1 RA or SGLT2i should be made based on specific patient's risk factors and preferences. Importantly, DMDs are known to have a generally safe side-effect profile, with lower risk for hypoglycemia and weight gain, further promoting their wider usage. Early combination therapy with DMDs may improve the multiple pathophysiological abnormalities responsible for type 2 diabetes and its complications, thus resulting in the greatest long term benefits.

Soil fumigation is currently the most effective method for controlling soil-borne pests and diseases in high-value crops. To better understand the effect of chloropicrin (CP), dazomet (DZ), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) and 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) fumigants on soil microorganisms, this study monitored changes in the diversity and community composition of soil bacteria involved in denitrification using real-time PCR and high-throughput gene sequencing techniques. These five fumigants significantly decreased the bacterial population size in some phyla including Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria, and increased the bacterial population size in other phyla such as Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Saccharibacteria and Parcubacteria. Although bacterial diversity declined after CP fumigation, it was briefly stimulated by the other four fumigants. Meanwhile, all five fumigants temporarily decreased populations of denitrifying bacteria containing the napA, narG, nirS or nirK enzyme-encoding genes. Denitrifiers bearing the cnorB, qnorB or nosZ genes were relatively stable following DZ and DMDS fumigation. However, cnorB and nosZ decreased initially following CP, AITC and 1,3-D fumigation. Simultaneously, the abundance of qnorB significantly increased in AITC and 1,3-D fumigated soils. These results showed that soil fumigation significantly shifted the abundance and community structure of denitrifying bacteria. This study will help to predict the response of different phyla of denitrifying bacteria to soil fumigation.

Tomatoes have been widely planted in greenhouses and fields in China. Soil-borne diseases are more harmful to tomatoes than other types of diseases. Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) was used as a novel fumigant instead of methyl bromide to control soil-borne diseases. To assess the safety of DMDS for use on tomatoes, its dissipation and terminal residues were investigated at three different locations under greenhouse and open field conditions. The QuEChERS method was simplified using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection and combined with liquid-liquid extraction purification to allow determination of DMDS levels in both the tomatoes and the soil. The average recovery of the method was between 85.3 and 98.6%, with the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from to 1.9-10.3%. The dissipation and terminal residues of DMDS in the tomatoes and the soil were analyzed using the method, the results of which showed that the half-life of DMDS ranged from 0.3-6.5 d in the soil at three different locations. The terminal residues of DMDS in the tomatoes and the soil were not detected. This study provided data that the Chinese government can use to support appropriate and safe guidance for the use of DMDS on agriculture.

An improved understanding of the conditions that influence dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) emissions, distribution through the soil and residues remaining after treatment will help to optimise the use of this relatively new soil fumigant for the control of soil-borne pests and disease, and to improve the safety of DMDS use. Using soil columns in the laboratory, the cumulative emission of DMDS using doses of 40 and 80 g m-2 were, respectively, 74.8% and 68.9% with bare soil, 4.2% and 9.6% with polyethylene (PE) film, 0.02% and 0.2% with Totally Impermeable Film (TIF). Six hours after injection DMDS was detected mostly 5 cm below the surface and very little at 25 cm when used on bare soil, compared with much higher and similar concentrations of DMDS 5 and 25 cm deep when films were used. DMDS at the injection port exceeded 1 µg cm-3 for longer when a film was used instead of bare soil. The total DMDS soil residues remaining in the soil, as a percentage of the initial DMDS dose at 40 or 80 g m-2 were, respectively, 1.17 and 5.58 with TIF, 0.91 and 1.18 with PE, 0.47 and 0.47 with bare soil. DMDS rose rapidly upwards and escaped from bare soil, whereas PE or TIF significantly reduced DMDS emissions, retained elevated DMDS concentrations in the soil for longer and distributed them more uniformly in the soil. TIF performed better in these respects than PE. TIF also reduced the potential environmental impact of DMDS more than PE, especially at the higher dose.

Odour complaints are frequent nowadays, particularly nearby industrial facilities emitting odorous compounds. Among all compounds susceptible of causing odour annoyance, reduced sulphur compounds (RSC) were studied, due to their unpleasant odour and low odour threshold. RSC ambient air mixing ratios, meteorological conditions and population complaints were analysed in an area of complex topography in order to identify their potential sources. Mixing ratios of three compounds, dimethyl sulphide (DMS), carbon disulphide (CDS) and dimethyl disulphide (DMDS), were continuously monitored using an online gas chromatograph coupled with a mass spectrometer detector (GC-MSD), which was placed in a mobile air quality monitoring unit. Measurement campaigns were performed during 2012 and 2013 for periods of 7-25 days in an urban area (four campaigns, N = 1368) and an urban area surrounded by industrial activities (three campaigns, N = 564). During such campaigns, RSC mixing ratios were frequently above their odour thresholds, which did not always involve citizen complaints. Average RSC ambient air mixing ratios tended to be lower in the urban area (DMS 0.06-0.33, CDS 0.05-0.10, DMDS 0.07-0.30 µg m-3) than in the industry surrounded one (DMS 0.30-2.39, 0.05-0.18, DMDS 0.09-0.62 µg m-3). The DMS/DMDS mixing ratio was frequently above 1, being a paper mill one of the main sources of RSC in the area. DMS/DMDS ratios below 1 were also recorded, suggesting a waste treatment plant as the RSC source or older air masses coming from the paper mill.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to describe recent developments of multiple sclerosis (MS) prevalence in Germany and to assess utilization patterns of disease-modifying drugs (DMDs). METHODS: We used nationwide outpatient claims data of the statutory health insurance (SHI) from the years 2012 to 2019, covering 87% of the total German population. In annual cross-sectional analyses, MS prevalence was measured as the percentage of the SHI population affected by MS. Annual agent-specific prescription prevalence of DMDs was calculated by the number of patients receiving the DMD per 1.000 MS patients. RESULTS: From 2012 to 2019, the prevalence of MS increased gradually from 0.27% to 0.34%. The overall DMD prescription prevalence in MS patients rose from 436 per 1,000 MS patients (2012) to 483 (2019). From 2012 to 2019 the prescription prevalence of interferon-beta 1a and interferon-beta 1b decreased sharply from 180.2 to 70.8 (-61%) and 80.2 to 34.1 (-57%), respectively. In contrast, the prescription prevalence of teriflunomide (2012: 8.5; 2019: 54.5) and fingolimod (2012: 28.5; 2019: 63.8) exhibited a pronounced increase by factors of 5.4 and 2.2, respectively. CONCLUSION: MS prevalence in Germany steadily increased in recent years. MS treatment patterns changed markedly indicating a shifting predominance of DMD injectable drugs to oral medications.

The unsaturation patterns of molecular fossils are critical in distinguishing their biological precursors and diagenetic processes. However, questions regarding the determination of double-bond positions of unsaturated dialkyl glycerol ethers (DAGEs) in submarine hydrocarbon seep ecosystems remain unsolved. To address this problem, a protocol for dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) derivative analysis using gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry was optimised. Herein, the double-bond positions of monounsaturated short-chain alcohols, monoalkyl glycerol ethers (MAGEs), and DAGEs in seep carbonates were analysed. Among these compounds, the double-bond positions of trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatives of the monounsaturated DAGE-DMDS adducts were determined for the first time, with mass spectra characterized by molecular ions (M+·) and two major diagnostic ions (ω+ and Δ+) cleaved at the double bonds. For both the MAGEs and DAGEs, the double-bond positions of the monounsaturated n-C16:1-alkyl moieties were identified at ω5 and ω7. Compared to monounsaturated short-chain alcohols and MAGEs, both ionization efficiency and relative sensitivity for the TMS derivatives of DAGE-DMDS adducts were low as indicated by the high limit of detection at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. In addition, the appropriate injection parameters and oven temperature program during GC analyses may be crucial in determining the double-bond positions within monounsaturated DAGEs.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical characteristics of the anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor(NMDAR)encephalitis with anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody(MOG-Ab)positivity serostatus in pediatric patients. METHODS: The clinical manifestations, treatments, and outcomes of patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis with positive MOG-Ab were elaborated. The annualized relapse rates (ARRs) were compared before and during treatment with disease-modifying drugs (DMDs). RESULTS: Twelve patients were included. In the prospective cohort(Cohort A), MOG-Ab positivity was associated with relapse (p = 0.028, OR = 1.677). Eight cases relapsed, of which six cases were treated with DMDs. The median ARR reduced significantly following DMDs treatments (z = 1.992, P = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS: The anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients with MOG-Ab co-existence are prone to relapse. Long-term DMDs therapy can reduce ARRs.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) were identified as the dominant priority odorants emitted from sewers, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (MM), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS). Biotrickling filter (BTF) is a widely-applied technology for odour abatement in sewers because of its relatively low operating cost and efficient H2S removal. The authors review the mechanisms and performance of BTF for the removal of these four VSCs, and discuss the key influencing factors including of empty bed residence time (EBRT), pH, temperature, nutrients, water content, trickling operation and packing materials. Besides, measures to improve the VSCs removal in BTF are proposed in the context of key influencing factors. Finally, the review assesses the new challenges of BTF for sewer emissions treatment, namely with respect to the performance of BTF for greenhouse gases (GHG) treatment.

Understanding the distribution and persistence of the fumigant dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) under different soil conditions would contribute to a more environmentally sustainable use of this gas. We determined the effects of soil type, soil moisture content and soil organic amendment rate on DMDS distribution and persistency using soil columns in the laboratory. The peak concentrations of DMDS at 60 cm soil depth in sandy loam soil, black soil and red loam soil were 1.9 µg cm-3, 0.77 µg cm-3, 0.22 µg cm-3, respectively. The total soil residues of DMDS in sandy loam soil, black soil and red loam soil were 0.4, 1.3 and 1.3%, respectively. The peak concentrations of DMDS at 60 cm soil depth and the total soil residues of DMDS applied decreased from 3.2 µg cm-3 to 0.9 µg cm-3 and 3.3 to 0.5% when soil moisture content increased from 6 to 18%, respectively. Incremental increases (0-5%) in organic amendment rates decreased DMDS distribution through the soils and increased soil residues. Wait periods were required of 7, 21 and 21 days after polyethylene (PE) film was removed to reduce residues sufficiently for cucumber seed germination in sandy loam soil, black soil and red loam soil with 12% moisture content and 0% organic amendment rate, respectively. However, no wait period was required for successful cucumber seed germination in sandy loam soils (Beijing) with 6, 12 or 18% moisture content or organic amendment rates of 1 or 5%, respectively, but in commercial practice 7 days delay would be prudent. Our results indicated that soil type, soil moisture content and organic amendment rates significantly affected DMDS distribution, persistency and residues in soil. Those factors should be taken into consideration by farmers when determining the appropriate dose of DMDS that will control soil pests and diseases in commercially-produced crops.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with varied clinical features. Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) of MS associated with different types of thyroiditis. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to assess the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in MS and to investigate the association between DMDs and the risk of thyroiditis in MS. A cross-sectional study included 100 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) in relapse, and the diagnosed was according to revised McDonald's criteria 2010. RESULTS: Our results revealed that the prevalence of thyroiditis was 40%; autoimmune (34%) and infective (6%) among patients with RRMS in relapse and cerebellar symptoms were significantly higher in patients with thyroiditis compared to patients without thyroiditis. Regarding the association between DMDs and thyroiditis, the prevalence of patients treated with interferon-beta-1b was higher in MS patients with thyroiditis compared to MS patients without thyroiditis. However, the prevalence of patients treated with interferon-beta-1a was lower in MS patients with thyroiditis compared to MS patients without thyroiditis. In addition, we found CMV infection was more common in patients treated by interferon beta-1b and candida infection was common in patients treated by fingolimod. CONCLUSIONS: Thyroiditis is commonly observed in patients with RRMS in relapse and higher prevalence of patients treated with interferon-beta-1b which is commonly associated with thyroiditis and CMV infection; however, candida thyroid infection was common in MS patients treated by fingolimod.

To reduce food loss from stored products by insect attack, monitoring and early detection of insects are essential. Presently, monitoring with pheromone traps is the primary method for detection; however, traps are effective only after the insects propagate. Detection and identification of the early volatile biomarkers arising from insect-infested brown rice was performed in this study to develop an alternative detection strategy. Brown rice was infested with eggs of seven insect species, including Sitophilus zeamais and Plodia interpunctella. Infested rice emitted at least one of the volatile compounds prenol, isoprenol, dimethyl disulfide, and dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS). In particular, isopentenols were generated by moths within one week of infestation, whereas they were not released from non-infested rice. DMTS was detected from all insect-infested brown rice, especially S. zeamais and P. interpunctella. These volatiles are potential early biomarkers for the presence of insects in brown rice.

In this study, a useful analytical method was developed and validated for measuring the residues of dimethyl disulphide (DMDS) in cucumbers and soil by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The dissipation dynamics and residual levels of DMDS in cucumber and soil were also studied in Shandong, Jilin, and Hebei provinces by using this method. Dichloromethane was selected and used as the extraction solvent to extract the target pesticide from the soil and cucumber samples. The soil and cucumber samples were cleaned up by the combination of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and biochar. The average recoveries of the DMDS in cucumbers and soil were in the range of 84-101.5%, with relative standard deviations (RSD) of 0.7-4.9%, when they spiked at 0.05, 0.5, and 5 mg/kg DMDS respectively. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of this method was 0.05 mg/kg. First-order and second-order kinetic equations were used to fit dissipation data. Results show that the half-lives of DMDS in the soil at Shandong, Jilin, and Hebei were 1.63-4.47 days, 1.96-6.49 days, and 1.35-2.51 days, respectively. The final residues of DMDS were less than 0.05 mg/kg in cucumbers and 0.36 mg/kg in the soil. The dissipation rates of DMDS in different soils were different. The method provides a basis for the risk assessment of DMDS in cucumber and soil.

Predominant contributors to thermally-induced off-notes in muskmelon juice were investigated by combination of sensory evaluation, GC-olfactometry (GC-O), multidimensional GC, odor activity value (OAV) calculation and addition experiments. "Fermented" and "sulfurous" were revealed as the dominant heat-induced offensive off-notes, and fundamental heat-led changes in odorant compositions were observed. Comparative aroma extract dilution analysis revealed that the off-flavors were mainly caused by newly heat-formed compounds with extremely low odor threshold and unpleasant smells. These included volatile sulfur compounds with "rotten" odors, Strecker aldehydes having "fermented" notes, and heterocyclics exhibiting "roasted" smells. Specifically, dimethyl sulfide, methional, methanethiol, dimethyl trisulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and acetaldehyde were identified as the predominant off-note contributors, among which DMS was the most important one, showing the highest OAV. Multiple extraction techniques, GC-O coupling to GC × GC-QTOF-MS and OAV calculation are powerful tools for accurate location and reliable identification of trace and key off-odorants in natural complex matrices.

Foul odors comprise generally a complex mixture of molecules, where reduced sulfur compounds play a key role due to their toxicity and low odor threshold. Previous reports on treating mixtures of sulfur compounds in single biofilters showed that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) interferes with the removal and degradation of other sulfur compounds. In this study, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) were fed to an alkaline biotrickling filter (ABTF) at pH 10, to evaluate the simultaneous removal of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in a single, basic-pH system. The H2S-DMDS mixture was treated for more than 200 days, with a gas residence time of 40 s, attaining elimination capacities of 86 gDMDS m-3 h-1 and 17 gH2S m-3 h-1 and removal efficiencies close to 100%. Conversion of H2S and DMDS to sulfate was generally above 70%. Consumption of sulfide and formaldehyde was verified by respirometry, suggesting the coexistence of both methylotrophic and chemoautotrophic breakdown pathways by the immobilized alkaliphilic biomass. The molecular biology analysis showed that the long-term acclimation of the ABTF led to a great variety of bacteria, predominated by Thioalkalivibrio species, while fungal community was notoriously less diverse and dominated by Fusarium species.

RESUMO

Over the past 20 years, the available therapies for multiple sclerosis have expanded exponentially. With several more agents likely to be approved for public funding in Australia in the next 12 months on top of the existing multitude of Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme-subsidized therapies, the choice is becoming even more complex. This review summarizes the current state of available therapies and anticipates likely future directions, including an important focus on contemporary symptom management. For each agent, the major trials, side effects, and clinical utility are summarized, with a particular focus on the Australian experience of these therapies. It is hoped this review provides an up-to-date reference of the exciting current state of multiple sclerosis therapy.

Skin cells emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and some of them can be used as biomarkers for screening specific diseases. Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) has been recently reported as a biomarker of melanoma skin cancer (Kwak et al. "Volatile Biomarkers from Human Melanoma Cells". J. Chromatogr. B. 2013. 931: 90-96.). With the motivation of diagnosing melanoma using DMDS as its biomarker, we explore the potential of measuring DMDS using an advanced laser spectroscopic technique as an alternative method. We report on the first DMDS measurements using an experimental system based on cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS). The test samples were mixtures of DMDS vapor and nitrogen in different concentrations. Two sampling methods were investigated to dilute the DMDS sample to low concentrations for ringdown measurements. The results showed that the ringdown system responded to various DMDS concentrations linearly and a theoretical detection limit of sub-ppb (parts per billion) could be achieved at the absorption wavelength of 266 nm. This ringdown system exhibited a high dynamic range for DMDS measurements, from ppm (parts per million) to ppt (parts per trillion) levels, given different laser wavelengths used. The feasibility of developing a portable melanoma screening sensor using the CRDS technique was also demonstrated in this study.

Soil fumigation is an important pest management tool for many high value crops. To address the knowledge gap of how fumigant concentration in soil impacts dissipation, and thereby efficacy, this research determined the degradation characteristics of four fumigants as affected by application rate. Laboratory incubation experiments were conducted to determine degradation rates of 1,3-dichloropropene (both cis- and trans isomers), chloropicrin (CP), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), and methyl iodide (MeI) in five agricultural soils. Fitted to pseudo first-order kinetics, the degradation rate constant (k) of CP, DMDS, and MeI decreased significantly as application rate increased while the 1,3-D isomers were the least affected by rate. Half-lives increased 12, 17, and 6-fold for CP, DMDS, and MeI, respectively, from the lowest to the highest application rate. At low application rates, the degradation rate of all fumigants in the Hueneme sandy loam soil was reduced by 50-95% in sterilized soil compared to the biologically active controls. However, this difference became much smaller or disappeared at high application rates indicating that biodegradation dominates at low concentrations but chemical degradation is more important at high concentrations. When co-applied, CP degradation was enhanced with biodegradation remained above 50%, while 1,3-D degradation was either reduced or not changed. Among the fumigants tested, the relative importance of biodegradation was DMDS>CP>MeI>1,3-D. These results are useful for determining effective fumigation rates and for informing regulatory decisions on emission controls under different fumigation scenarios.

Traditional methods of volatile detection used by police typically consist of reliance on canine olfaction. However, dogs have some limitations such as cost of training and time of conditioning. The possibility of using parasitic wasps for detecting explosives and narcotics has been developed. Moreover, wasps are cheap to produce and can be conditioned with impressive speed for a specific chemical detection task. We examined the ability of Nasonia vitripennis Walker to learn and respond to methyldisulfanylmethane (DMDS), a volatile discriminator of cadaver. The training aimed to form an association between an unconditioned stimulus (pupae) and the conditioned stimulus (odor source). After the training, the time spent by conditioned wasps in the DMDS chamber was measured. Statistical analysis showed that the increasing concentrations involved an increase in the time spent in the chamber containing DMDS. This study indicates that N. vitripennis can respond to DMDS, which provide further support for its development as a biological sensor.
