BACKGROUND: Substantial evidence embraced the nutrition competence of the Mediterranean diet (MD) as a healthy model for decreasing the risk of chronic diseases and increasing longevity, with the bonus of ensuring environmental sustainability. Measuring adherence to this diet is marginally investigated in the Arabian Gulf region, an area away from the Mediterranean region. The current study aimed to assess the MD adherence among adults in Sharjah/the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and to identify the most influential predictors for MD adherence among the study participants. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was employed using a self-reported, web-based electronic questionnaire that questioned sociodemographics, lifestyle factors, and familiarity with the MD. The MD adherence was assessed by the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener validated questionnaire. The adherence level was classified as low for a total score of [0-5], medium [score 6-7], and high (8-13). RESULTS: The study included 1314 participants (age 25-52 years) comprised 822 (62.6%) females and 492 (37.4%) males. There was a moderate adherence score (5.9 ± 1.9) among the study participants. The food constituent expressed the lowest contribution to the MD was fish (9.3%), followed by fruits (12.3%), and legumes (18.3%). The multivariable linear regression analysis showed an overall significant linear trend for the association between the MD adherence score and physical activity, while nutrition information from dietitians and social media were the most two strongly related predictors for the higher adherence (ß = 0.747; 95% CI 0.51-0.98, and ß 0.60; 95% CI 0.269-0.93; p < 0.001, respectively). On the other side, being a smoker and from a non-Mediterranean country was associated with lower adherence scores (ß = 0.538; 95% CI 0.252-0.82, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The findings of the current study showed a moderate adherence, low proportion for high adherence, and a gap in the familiarity with the diet name. Being married, physically active, non-smoker, and getting nutrition information from dietitians and social media were the strongest predictors for higher adherence. It is warranted that public health and nutrition specialists/dietitians to tailor new modern approaches for promoting healthy dietary behaviours consistent with the MD.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is one of the most serious chronic diseases affecting the global population. Clinical team members involved in the care of individuals with IBD should have sufficient knowledge about IBD. AIMS: The study aim was to assess IBD knowledge among four health care professional groups in New Zealand: nurses, medical students, dietitians, and pharmacists. METHODS: All four groups completed surveys on demographics, work experience, and contact with patients with IBD. All completed a validated IBD knowledge assessment questionnaire (IBD-KID2), and percentage scores with standard deviation (SD) for each group calculated and compared. RESULTS: Participants included 200 nurses, 196 medical students, 45 dietitians, and 28 pharmacists. Mean IBD-KID2 percentage scores were nurses 69.7% (SD 14.7), medical students 77.6% (SD 14.5), dietitians 87.4% (SD 8.3), and pharmacists 83.4% (SD 10.1). Nurses scored lower than other HCP (P < 0.001). Independent variables were associated (P < 0.05) with higher scores for nurses having first degree relative with IBD, access to IBD guidelines, worked with children with IBD; medical students in their clinical years of study; and dietitians with IBD-specific education. Specific items scored poorly: growth, food triggers, heritability of IBD, and nutrient absorption. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge gaps exist among HCP that may be addressed with targeted education. Improvements in the knowledge of those caring for people with IBD may optimize patient outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Dietitians are increasingly working in residential aged care facilities (RACF). As such, supporting the RACF dietetic workforce is imperative. This qualitative study explored dietitians' experiences and preparedness for working in RACFs. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach from a non-singular reality relational position was used. Recruitment occurred through convenience and snowball sampling, including contacting a list of dietitians who had previously consented to be contacted for research. The interviews included a semi-structured approach. Data were analysed using constant comparison and reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Thirty-one dietitians (n = 29 female; median age, 39 years) with a range of career experience participated in an interview. Interviews ranged from 25 to 68 min (mean duration, 41 min). Five themes and 14 subthemes were identified. Themes were: (1) joining the aged care workforce was not initially considered a career option, (2) difficulty sustaining satisfaction working in aged care, (3) navigating practical challenges working with residents while prioritising quality care, (4) poor acknowledgement of the dietitian role by staff and (5) grappling with a moral desire to improve the aged care sector. CONCLUSION: Dietitians face many challenges in fulfilling their role in RACFs, including RACF staff's poor understanding of dietitians' scope and a lack of procedural support for their daily activities. Dietitians report that genuine improvements in their job satisfaction and experiences of older adults require structural reform within the government, beyond their locus of control.

BACKGROUND: Weight stigma is pervasive within healthcare and negatively impacts both access to care and the patient-practitioner relationship. There is limited evidence on weight stigma among registered dietitians, particularly in the United Kingdom, though data show weight-related prejudice towards people living with obesity. The aim of this study was to examine both explicit and implicit weight stigma in practicing dietitians in the United Kingdom, as well as the lived experience of weight stigma among dietitians, both towards themselves and towards others. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was disseminated between February and May 2022 using snowball sampling. Inclusion criteria were that participants were UK registered dietitians aged 20-70 years. RESULTS: Four hundred and two dietitians responded to the survey (female [94.1%], mean age 40.2 years [standard deviation (SD) 10.7]; White ethnicity [90%]; median 12 years [interquartile range (IQR) 6, 22] within dietetic practice). Mean self-reported body mass index was 25.1 kg/m² (SD 8.7). Most dietitians reported experiencing weight stigma prior to (51%) and postregistration (59.7%), whereas nearly a quarter (21.1%) felt that weight influenced their ability as a dietitian. Weight stigma was experienced across the weight spectrum. Overall participants reported explicit weight bias attitudes, moderate beliefs that obesity is controllable and implicit antifat bias. Within open-ended responses, dietitians reported three key themes related to their personal experiences of weight stigma: (1) experiences of stigma in dietetic practice, (2) impact of weight stigma and (3) perception of weight, appearance and job. CONCLUSION: This study shows that UK dietitians exhibit both explicit and implicit weight bias towards people living with obesity. Dietitians reported experiencing weight stigma, which impacted their career-related decisions and their perception of their own ability to perform as dietitians. The study highlights the need to address weight stigma and its implications within the dietetic profession.

Background: Health professionals, including dietitians, should adapt their clinical daily practice to evidence-based practice (EBP), but this does not happen often in daily practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the current status and barriers to evidence-based practice among dietitians. Methods: This was a mixed-method, cross-sectional, national study (questionnaire and focus group) performed on working and registered dietitians, both self-employed and employed by public hospitals. The main outcomes were EBP knowledge, frequency of use, and proficiency scores. Barriers to EBP implementation were also collected, as well as qualitative information from the focus group. Results: Forty-three dietitians were enrolled from August to November 2021 in Italy. Overall, EBP knowledge was moderate/good. Younger dietitians (< 50 years old) obtained better results than their older colleagues. A similar trend was observed in terms of seniority. There was a discrepancy between EBP knowledge and perception of EBP implementation: the worst scores were obtained by participants who claimed an already complete integration of EBP. The average frequency of EBP use was moderate, with higher scores in dietitians ≥ 50 years old and with seniority ≥ 20 years. EBP proficiency instead was poor. The focus group revealed a lack of time and resistance to change as the main barriers. Conclusion: The importance of EBP is well-acknowledged, but it is not correctly implemented yet, because of identified barriers that need to be fixed. These barriers include a lack of dedicated time, inadequate EBP training, and resistance to change, especially in hierarchical environments.

Purpose: To investigate why Canadian nutrition care providers choose, or not, to integrate nutritional genomics into practice, and to evaluate the nutritional genomics training/education experiences and needs of nutrition providers in Canada, while comparing those of dietitians to non-dietitians.Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed across Canada from June 2021 to April 2022.Results: In total, 457 healthcare providers (HCPs) [n = 371 dietitians (81.2%)] met the inclusion criteria. The majority (n = 372; 82.1%) reported having no experience offering nutritional genomics to clients (n = 4 did not respond). Of the 81 respondents with experience (17.9%), the most common reason to integrate nutrigenetic testing into practice was the perception that clients would be more motivated to change their eating habits (70.4%), while the most common reason for not integrating such tests was the perception that the nutrigenetic testing process is too complicated (n = 313; 84.1%). Dietitians were more likely than non-dietitians to view existing scientific evidence as an important educational topic (p = 0.002). The most selected useful educational resource by all HCPs was clinical practice guidelines (n = 364; 85.4%).Conclusions: Both dietitians and non-dietitians express a desire for greater nutritional genomics training/education; specific educational needs differ by type of HCP. Low implementation of nutrigenetic testing may be partly attributed to other identified barriers.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of an online approach to monitoring food affordability in Ontario using the updated Ontario Nutritious Food Basket (ONFB).Methods: The ONFB was priced online in 12 large multi-chain grocery stores to test intra-/inter-rater reliability using percent agreement and intra-class correlations (ICCs). Then, the ONFB was priced in-store and online in 28 stores to estimate food price differences using paired t-tests and Pearson's correlation for all (n =1708) and matched items (same product/brand and purchase unit) (n = 1134).Results: Intra-/inter-rater agreement was high (95.4%/81.6%; ICC = 0.972, F = 69.9, p < 0.001). On average, in-store prices were less than $0.02 lower than online prices. There were no significant differences between mean in-store and online prices for all items (t = 0.504 p = 0.614). The mean price was almost perfectly correlated between in-store and online (fully matched: R = 0.993 p < 0.001; all items: R = 0.967 p < 0.001). Online monthly ONFB estimates for a family of four were strongly correlated (R = 0.937 p < 0.001) with estimates calculated using in-store data.Conclusions: Online pricing is a reliable and valid approach to food costing in Ontario that contributes to modernizing the monitoring of food affordability in Canada and abroad.

AIM: Dietitians are a well-placed profession to be providing pre-emptive oral health promotion. Despite recommendations that oral health promotion should be routinely part of dietetic practice, there is limited data informing the current practices of clinical dietitians in this area across Australia. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge and practices of Australian dietitians and oral health promotion. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken involving registered clinical dietitians in Australia using purposive and snowballing sampling (social media/dietetic organisations/public databases). Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: A total of 149 dietitians participated in the national survey. Overall, dietitians were knowledgeable about oral health risk factors and preventative measures across general health domains. Majority of dietitians agreed that oral health can affect nutrition interventions (95.5%) and dietitians should be discussing oral health (88.0%). However, nearly half were not confident in providing counselling or education and felt that undergraduate training for oral health promotion was inadequate (78.2%). A small proportion (6.0%) of dietitians were already providing oral health promotion regularly. Key barriers included a lack of clear guidelines for practice, limited training opportunities and indistinct referral pathways. CONCLUSION: Dietitians have acknowledged that oral health promotion should be incorporated into their practice. However, they are challenged by a lack of resources and training to support this in clinical practice. SO WHAT?: Capacity building dietitians to promote oral health allows opportunity for improvement in the oral health, nutritional status and quality of life of priority population groups.

BACKGROUND: Recommendations to facilitate evidence-based nutrition provision for critically ill children exist and indicate the importance of nutrition in this population. Despite these recommendations, it is currently unknown how well Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) are equipped to provide nutrition care. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this project were to describe the dietitian and nutrition-related practices and resources in ANZ PICUs. METHODS: A clinician survey was completed as a component of an observational study across nine ANZ PICUs in June 2021. The online survey comprised 31 questions. Data points included reporting on dietetics resourcing, local feeding-related guidelines and algorithms, nutrition screening and assessment practices, anthropometry practices, and indirect calorimetry (IC) device availability and local technical expertise. Data are presented as frequency (%), mean (standard deviation), or median (interquartile range). RESULTS: Survey responses were received from all nine participating sites. Dietetics staffing per available PICU bed ranged from 0.01 to 0.07 full-time equivalent (median: 0.03 [interquartile range: 0.02-0.04]). Nutrition screening was established in three (33%) units, all of which used the Paediatric Nutrition Screening Tool. Dietitians consulted all appropriate patients (or where capacity allowed) in six (66%) units and on a request or referral basis only in three (33%) units. All units possessed a local feeding guideline or algorithm. An IC device was available in two (22%) PICUs and was used in one of these units. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to describe the dietitian and nutrition-related practices and resources of ANZ PICUs. Areas for potential improvement include dietetics full-time equivalent, routine nutrition assessment, and access to IC.

BACKGROUND: The Australian 2021 Royal Commission identified that the dietetic workforce needs to grow in size and capacity to support nutrition care in older adults. However, little is known about dietitians' knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA) regarding working with older adults in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) or their homes. This review describes dietitians' KSA regarding older adults in RACFs and home care services. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in August 2021 to identify studies examining any aspect of dietitians or student dietitians' KSA working in RACFs and home care services. No restrictions were applied to methodological design, language, location or publication year. Studies were assessed for quality using the Johanna Briggs Institute Quality Appraisal Tools. Study findings were analysed thematically using meta-synthesis. RESULTS: All 17 studies that met the inclusion criteria explored dietitians' attitudes towards their role, three studies examined perceived knowledge, although no studies objectively explored dietitians' skill levels. Five themes were developed inductively: (1) recognising their contribution as dietitians; (2) lacking clarity about the boundaries of their role; (3) all team members have a role to play in nutrition care; (4) assumptions and biases about working with older people; and (5) needing to build capacity in the workforce. DISCUSSION: Dietitians have mixed attitudes about working in RACFs and home care services. Future directions include evaluating dietitians' role in RACFs, reviewing education and training and practical opportunities for student dietitians, and assessing the impact of more dietitian support on an older person's dietary intake and nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Allied health professionals (AHPs) have an important role to support the Greener National Health Service (NHS) agenda. Dietitians are AHPs who are already demonstrating strong influence on food sustainability advocacy. There is call for more collaboration across the health professions to optimise "green" leadership in the pursuit of planetary health. The present study aimed to investigate the perceived role of AHP leaders and future leaders around more sustainable healthcare practices. METHODS: A mixed methods approach using audio-recorded semi-structured interviews with strategic AHP leaders (n = 11) and focus groups with student AHPs (n = 2). Standardised open-ended questions considered concepts of (i) leadership, (ii) green agenda, (iii) collaboration and (iv) sustainability. Purposive sampling used already established AHP networks. Thematic analysis systematically generated codes and themes with dietetic narratives drawn out specifically as exemplars. RESULTS: The findings represent diverse AHP voices, with six of 14 AHPs analysed, including dietetic (future) leaders. Three key themes emerged: (1) collective vision of sustainable practice; (2) empowering, enabling and embedding; and (3) embracing collaborative change. Dietetic specific narratives included food waste, NHS food supply chain issues, and tensions between health and sustainability advice. CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows that collaborative leadership is a core aspiration across AHP leaders and future leaders to inform the green agenda. Despite inherent challenges, participant perceptions illustrate how "change leadership" might be realised to support the net zero agenda within health and social care. Dietitians possess the relevant skills and competencies, and therefore have a fundamental role in evolving collaborative leadership and directing transformational change towards greener healthcare practices. Recommendations are made for future leaders to embrace this agenda to meet the ambitious net zero targets.

BACKGROUND: Recent surveys highlight gross workforce shortage of dietitians in global kidney health and significant gaps in renal nutrition care, with disparities greater in low/low-middle income countries. OBJECTIVE: This paper narrates ground experiences gained through the Palm Tocotrienols in Chronic Hemodialysis (PaTCH) project on kidney nutrition care scenarios and some Asian low-to-middle-income countries namely Bangladesh, India, and Malaysia. METHOD: Core PaTCH investigators from 3 universities (USA and Malaysia) were supported by their postgraduate students (n = 17) with capacity skills in kidney nutrition care methodology and processes. This core team, in turn, built capacity for partnering hospitals as countries differed in their ability to deliver dietitian-related activities for dialysis patients. RESULTS: We performed a structural component analyses of PaTCH affiliated and nonaffiliated (Myanmar and Indonesia) countries to identify challenges to kidney nutrition care. Deficits in patient-centered care, empowerment processes and moderating factors to nutrition care optimization characterized country comparisons. Underscoring these factors were some countries lacked trained dietitians whilst for others generalist dietitians or nonclinical nutritionists were providing patient care. Resolution of some challenges in low-to-middle-income countries through coalition networking to facilitate interprofessional collaboration and task sharing is described. CONCLUSIONS: We perceive interprofessional collaboration is the way forward to fill gaps in essential dietitian services and regional-based institutional coalitions will facilitate culture-sensitive capacity in building skills. For the long-term an advanced renal nutrition course such as the Global Renal Internet Course for Dietitians is vital to facilitate sustainable kidney nutrition care.

The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease: 2020 Update recommends adjusting dietary phosphorus to maintain a serum phosphate goal for hemodialysis patients in the normal range (0.81 to 1.45 mmol/L [2.5 to 4.5 mg/dL]). This is lower than the serum phosphate goal used by many dialysis centers (0.97 to 1.78 mmol/L [3.0 and 5.5 mg/dL]). Although context and clinical judgment must always be considered when providing individualized care to patients, a guideline implementation study conducted from December 2020 to December 2022 found that, based on their documentation, registered dietitian nutritionists from two national dialysis chains are almost universally using dialysis center goals instead of the lower phosphate goal recommended by the guideline. This commentary discusses the possible barriers to implementing the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative 2020 nutrition guideline's phosphorus recommendation and proposes a systems level approach to promote and support adoption of the recommendation. Calls to action for potential changes in clinician practices, organizational/institutional culture, and government regulations are put forth.

While higher-weight bodies have been radically medicalized in modern Western discourse, they are also culturally conceived as a moral project. In clinical settings aimed at transforming the body, the consultation sessions between bariatric professionals and patients reveal nuanced moral deliberations. I suggest that bariatric surgery becomes a site of a "moral breakdown," where professionals direct patients to morally recuperate not only through technologies of the self, such as intensive bodywork and diets, but through "moral laboratories," which invite moments of experimentation in everyday life. Drawing on ethnographic inquiry in a bariatric clinic, I argue that this moral project is understood through new relationships within various registers of patients' subjectivity. First, patients are instructed to "listen to their bodies" and to reconnect to their embodied sensations. They are further guided to cognitively imitate an effortless "thin state of mind." And finally, they are instructed to "put themselves first" by reorganize their interactions with significant others. Professional guidance encourages dialog and reflexivity within the patient that are consonant with neoliberal understandings of the self-disciplined subject, yet they expand, and at times undermine these neoliberal notions by attending to other body ethics and contesting elements of fat stigma.

Continuing care (CC) facilities have been impacted by a growing demand for services, insufficient resources for the provision of quality food and nutrition care, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explored the roles and responsibilities of dietitians working in CC facilities in Nova Scotia (NS) before and after the COVID-19 first wave. Using ethics-approved questionnaires, the estimated 75 dietitians working in CC facilities in NS were surveyed in Fall 2019 and Fall 2020 about their roles and responsibilities. Twenty responded to the first questionnaire and 15 to the second. Analysis of data included simple statistical and qualitative description methods. The findings highlighted the complexities and challenges faced by these dietitians in the provision of resident nutrition care, overseeing foodservices, training staff and dietetic interns, and contributing to facility specific care committees before and after the COVID-19 first wave. There is a need to advocate for minimum standards for dietetic and foodservice funding in CC facilities based on higher acuity and complex care needs of residents and considering the multifaceted roles of dietitians in CC. Efforts to improve awareness about the roles of dietitians working in CC among resident families, other dietitians, and dietetic interns are also needed.

RESUMO

While conducting nutrition/health research into weight changes during incarceration and related determinants, it became apparent that the correctional setting in Canada was unique and required study design modifications to ensure study success. Consequently, we made many methodological adjustments during recruitment and data collection because of unforeseen challenges in the correctional context. This paper provides an illustrative example and shares insights on the challenges faced when conducting nutrition/health research in Canadian correctional facilities. Guidance on how to adapt research methods to make them more conducive to this unique environment is provided. This paper also highlights the importance of conducting nutrition/health research in this setting, especially given the lack of this type of research and the need for more evidence-based data to guide health promotion and nutritional interventions in Canadian correctional facilities.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) is an autoimmune disorder which can have short- and long-term adverse effects on health. Dietitians in diabetes offer specialist evidence-based advice to people with T1DM and provide education in either individual or group settings. The purpose of this study was to explore dietitians' perception of, and role in, group-based education as well as prospects for development. METHODS: This was a qualitative descriptive study conducted in Sweden using a convenience sampling of dietitians working in adult diabetes care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants and data were analysed using a content analysis approach. RESULTS: Ten dietitians with a median experience of 14.5 years in diabetes care were interviewed. The informants were all appreciative of facilitating group-based education and perceived that it was beneficial for people with T1DM to be part of group processes, but the informants did also suggest that there were challenges for their professional role. The main challenges reported was to adjust the level of depth and complexity to the information provided and the lack of ability to individualize the education-sessions in a heterogenous group. None of the dietitians reported performing pre-assessment or follow-up audits on the group-based education. CONCLUSION: There was a great engagement from the dietitians, but they identified a lack of framework that address challenges regarding group-based education. The dietitians experienced examples of person-centred care while facilitating group-based education, which may benefit people with T1DM. Based on the results, it would be valuable to explore the pedagogic training level of Swedish dietitians and potential barriers in their ability to facilitate group-based education. We suggest that a framework for group-based education should be explored together with patient representatives to optimize the care given to ensure cost-effectiveness, optimize clinical outcomes, quality of life and equally accessible care for people with T1DM.

BACKGROUND: Dietary guidelines for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) emphasise weight management and individualised total carbohydrate intake. Evidence on the most effective dietary patterns (DPs) for T2DM management is mixed, potentially leading to variations in the advice that dietitians provide. The present study aimed to explore dietitians' practice of DP advice provision to adults with T2DM, as well as understand their views when advising their patients on the DPs deemed effective for glycaemic management or recommended by current guidelines. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 UK-registered dietitians, with experience in consulting adults with T2DM. Dietitians were asked for their views on five DPs recommended for glycaemic management of T2DM. Interview transcripts were analysed using deductive and inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Nine themes were identified that draw attention to DP advice provision practices, the five DPs (low-carbohydrate, low-fat, low-glycaemic index, Mediterranean diet and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet), other DPs, the barriers and facilitators to DP advice provision and following this advice, and the factors affecting the provision of DP advice. Participants' current practice of DP advice provision to patients with T2DM was perceived to be individualised and patient-centred. Participants discussed their current practice and perceptions of available evidence and how patients respond to advice on the DPs shown to be effective for glycaemic management. Several barriers to providing advice on specific DPs, including safety and compliance challenges, were identified. Participants also highlighted factors that would facilitate the provision of advice on specific DPs and would help patients to follow this advice, including social support, educational resources and more robust scientific evidence. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study provide important insights regarding dietitians' views of promoting whole DPs to patients with T2DM. Emerged barriers and facilitators should be considered when developing future guidance for dietetic practice to support patients with following whole DPs for T2DM management.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes distress is a commonly experienced negative emotional response to the ongoing burden of diabetes. Holistic diabetes care, including attention to diabetes distress, is recommended in clinical guidelines, yet not routinely implemented. Diabetes health professionals have highlighted lack of training as a barrier to implementation of psychological care. Therefore, we developed an e-learning: 'Diabetes distress e-learning: A course for diabetes educators' to address this need. This pilot study aimed to examine the feasibility of evaluating the e-learning in a randomised controlled trial study, the acceptability of the e-learning to credentialled diabetes educators (CDEs); and preliminary evidence of its effect upon CDEs' diabetes distress-related knowledge, motivation, confidence, behavioural skills, and barriers to implementation. METHODS: A pilot, unblinded, 2-armed, parallel group randomised controlled trial. Participants were recruited during a 4-month timeframe. Eligible participants were CDEs for ≥ 1 year providing care to ≥ 10 adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes per week. Participants were randomly allocated (1:1 computer automated) to 1 of 2 learning activities: diabetes distress e-learning (intervention) or diabetes distress chapter (active control). They had 4 weeks to access the activity. They completed online surveys at baseline, 2-week and 12-week follow-up. RESULTS: Seventy-four eligible CDEs (36 intervention, 38 active control) participated. At baseline, recognition of the clinical importance of diabetes distress was high but knowledge and confidence to provide support were low-to-moderate. Engagement with learning activities was high (intervention: 83%; active control: 92%). Fifty-five percent returned at least 1 follow-up survey. All 30 intervention participants who returned the 2-week follow-up survey deemed the e-learning high quality and relevant. Systemic barriers (e.g., financial limitations and access to mental health professionals) to supporting people with diabetes distress were common at baseline and follow-up.  CONCLUSIONS: The e-learning was acceptable to CDEs. The study design was feasible but needs modification to improve follow-up survey return. The e-learning showed potential for improving diabetes distress-related knowledge, confidence and asking behaviours, but systemic barriers to implementation remained. Systemic barriers need to be addressed to facilitate implementation of support for diabetes distress in clinical practice. Future larger-scale evaluation of the e-learning is warranted.

Little is known about Canadian dietitians' perceptions and experiences of interprofessional collaboration. To address this knowledge gap, a cross-sectional online survey was administered to registered dietitians in Canada. Quantitative data was analyzed in SPSS using descriptive and inferential statistics, while thematic analysis was used for open-text responses. A total of N = 469 registered dietitians representing 10 provinces participated in the study. Results showed a significant difference (p < .001) between the frequency with which dietitians collaborated with other health and social care providers and their desired frequency, with 61.0% indicating they wanted more frequent collaboration. A majority of dietitians (59.2%) had negative views of interprofessional interactions. Nearly all respondents felt there is a need to raise better awareness about the dietetic profession (95.4%) and that dietitians are underutilized in the world of healthcare (92.5%). On three measures, a majority of participants (ranging from 65.6% to 81.5%) reported that their dietetic training helped equip them for interprofessional collaboration. Insufficient time/availability was the obstacle to interprofessional collaboration cited most frequently by dietitians. Results suggest that interprofessional collaboration is an area in need of attention in the Canadian dietetic profession, as well as with health and social care providers who work with dietitians. The study's findings point to potential areas for improvement.
