RESUMO

There is a long-standing lack of learner satisfaction with quality and quantity of feedback in health professions education (HPE) and training. To address this, university and training programmes are increasingly using technological advancements and data analytic tools to provide feedback. One such educational technology is the Learning Analytic Dashboard (LAD), which holds the promise of a comprehensive view of student performance via partial or fully automated feedback delivered to learners in real time. The possibility of displaying performance data visually, on a single platform, so users can access and process feedback efficiently and constantly, and use this to improve their performance, is very attractive to users, educators and institutions. However, the mainstream literature tends to take an atheoretical and instrumentalist view of LADs, a view that uncritically celebrates the promise of LAD's capacity to provide a 'technical fix' to the 'wicked problem' of feedback in health professions education. This paper seeks to recast the discussion of LADs as something other than a benign material technology using the lenses of Miller and Rose's technologies of government and Barry's theory of Technological Societies, where such technical devices are also inherently agentic and political. An examination of the purpose, design and deployment of LADs from these theoretical perspectives can reveal how these educational devices shape and govern the HPE learner body in different ways, which in turn, may produce a myriad of unintended- and ironic- effects on the feedback process. In this Reflections article we wish to encourage health professions education scholars to examine the practices and consequences thereof of the ever-expanding use of LADs more deeply and with a sense of urgency.

RESUMO

The value and methods of online learning have changed tremendously over the last 25 years. The goal of this paper is to review a quarter-century of experience with online learning by the author in the field of biomedical and health informatics, describing the learners served and the lessons learned. The author details the history of the decision to pursue online education in informatics, describing the approaches taken as educational technology evolved over time. A large number of learners have been served, and the online learning approach has been well-received, with many lessons learned to optimize the educational experience. Online education in biomedical and health informatics has provided a scalable and exemplary approach to learning in this field.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to design and implement a gamified application about the theoretical aspects of laser applications in dentistry and investigate students' satisfaction with their learning experience. METHODS: An engaging educational program named Essential Skills and Knowledge in Learning Laser (ESKILLD) was developed to teach laser applications in dentistry. The program comprises two primary components: a "Tutorial and Quiz" section and a "Games" section. Final-year dental students were tasked with installing and using this application. A 29-item validated questionnaire (Cronbach's alpha = 0.97, ICC = 0.94) was used to evaluate students' perceptions of the applications' design and functionality. The influence of participants' gender and Grade Point Average (GPA) on their satisfaction levels was examined via the student t-test and Pearson's correlation, with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: The study had 56 participants, of which 37 were female (66.07%), and 19 were male (33.92%). The students' average GPA was 15.16 out of 20. The mean rating for ESKILLD's design and functionality was 1.39 ± 0.47 and 1.37 ± 0.46, respectively, signifying a high satisfaction level. Female students rated the application's coherence and learning perception significantly higher than their male counterparts (p < 0.05). However, gender did not significantly influence scores on other perception aspects or overall scores. Students' GPAs and their perception scores did not have a significant correlation. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the participants were generally satisfied with the game's features and attitudes towards it, which underscores the potential effectiveness of gamification in dental courses focused on laser applications.

INTRODUCTION: Blended learning, which integrates classroom face-to-face teaching with both asynchronous and synchronous online learning elements, has swiftly gained acceptance in educational environments. However, the implementation of blended learning presents challenges that impact all stakeholders, necessitating thoughtful consideration. Teachers play a central role in shaping the instructional experience among these stakeholders. To fully realize the potential of comprehensive blended learning, it is imperative to identify the challenges faced by these teachers and develop strategies that sensibly address and overcome them. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted with twelve teachers involved in the postgraduate blended learning health professions program at Khyber Medical University, Peshawar in 2022. One-on-one semi-structured Interviews were conducted via WhatsApp/ZOOM, transcribed by Otter AI, coded on NVivo & analyzed using Braun/Clarke's Thematic Analysis. RESULTS: Three themes of challenges faced by teachers of postgraduate blended learning programs were constructed namely (1) Skills, such as (i) digital, (ii) instructional, and (iii) online class management, and (2) Administrative barriers in terms of (iv) resources (iv) training, and (3) Faculty resistance. CONCLUSION: This study provides profound insights into the daunting challenges that postgraduate blended learning program teachers encounter in terms of skills, administrative barriers, and faculty resistance. These findings offer a valuable opportunity for program directors to identify the critical requirements of these faculties in their pursuit of effective teaching and learning, ultimately transforming the landscape of blended education. This study emphasizes the need for ongoing faculty development and institutional support to address the identified challenges and improve the quality of postgraduate blended-learning programs.

This research work focuses on evaluating the development of our three-step digitization approach, designed to transform traditional lectures into engaging digital learning experiences. Aimed at offering an easy-to-use solution for educators, this approach addresses the pressing challenges of modern educational environments by enhancing accessibility, engagement, and effectiveness of learning through digital means.Quantitative analysis demonstrated a notable increase in knowledge gain for students engaged with the digital format (t(230) = -2.795, p = 0.006) over traditional methods. Additionally, it was observed that the online setting significantly improved concentration levels (t(230) = -5.801, p < .001) and reduced distractions (t(230) = 2.848, p = 0.005). Emotional assessments, based on the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire (AEQ), indicated an elevation in enjoyment (t(230) = -4.717, p < .001) and a reduction in anxiety (t(230) = 9.446, p < .001) within the digital learning environment. A substantial preference for the digital course format was expressed by 61.0% of participants, with 71.4% acknowledging its superior efficiency compared to 14.3% for traditional lectures.Qualitative feedback underscored the digital format's flexibility, comprehensive learning experience, and immediate feedback as key benefits. Nevertheless, nuances such as a preferred understanding in face-to-face interactions and the absence of a social component in digital settings were noted.To conclude, the findings from this study illuminate the significant advantages of the three-step digitization approach in meeting contemporary educational challenges. By facilitating an enhanced knowledge acquisition and fostering a supportive emotional climate, this approach signifies a promising direction for the future of medical education and beyond, fusing the convenience of digital solutions with the depth and engagement of traditional learning methodologies.

The global disruption created by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in medical education and healthcare institutions is unparalleled. Consequently, it is essential to evaluate the usability of forms of educational technology and to identify their viability and suitability for medical education. The objective of the investigation was to present an assessment of the state of medical education during the COVID-19 epidemic and to identify the obstacles faced by educators while introducing online learning systems for medical students. Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted with 200 medical students and 75 staff members from Saudi Arabia's University of Health. A descriptive method was used to focus on the mechanisms of analysis, foresight, and comprehension of reality. The most significant findings were the obstacles posed by instructors' most urgent requirements for educational technology training and its applications in order to activate distance education in medical education. In addition to a detailed description of the academic and technological concerns and obstacles encountered by students and faculty of health colleges during the pandemic, this report includes a discussion of the pandemic itself. Several prospective recommendations for the use of online and blended learning in health colleges post-pandemic were also made. Additionally, the requirement to activate learning via virtual professional learning groups.


La perturbation mondiale créée par la pandémie de maladie à coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) dans les établissements d'enseignement médical et de soins de santé est sans précédent. Par conséquent, il est essentiel d'évaluer l'utilisabilité des formes de technologie éducative et d'identifier leur viabilité et leur adéquation à l'enseignement médical. L'objectif de l'enquête était de présenter une évaluation de l'état de l'enseignement médical pendant l'épidémie de COVID-19 et d'identifier les obstacles rencontrés par les éducateurs lors de l'introduction de systèmes d'apprentissage en ligne pour les étudiants en médecine. Deux enquêtes transversales ont été menées auprès de 200 étudiants en médecine et de 75 membres du personnel de l'Université de la Santé d'Arabie Saoudite. Une méthode descriptive a été utilisée pour se concentrer sur les mécanismes d'analyse, de prospective et de compréhension de la réalité. Les résultats les plus significatifs ont été les obstacles posés par les besoins les plus urgents des instructeurs en matière de formation en technologie éducative et ses applications afin d'activer l'enseignement à distance en médecine. éducation. En plus d'une description détaillée des préoccupations et des obstacles académiques et technologiques rencontrés par les étudiants et les professeurs des collèges de santé pendant la pandémie, ce rapport comprend une discussion sur la pandémie elle-même. Plusieurs recommandations prospectives concernant l'utilisation de l'apprentissage en ligne et mixte dans les établissements de santé après la pandémie ont également été formulées. À cela s'ajoute l'obligation d'activer l'apprentissage via des groupes d'apprentissage professionnel virtuels.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a video presentation instruction compared to the prevailing traditional lecture provided in the preclinical classroom when introducing computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted as a controlled educational trial (single-blind) on 120 first-year dental students. Students were assigned to two learning groups: the control (n = 60, traditional lecture) and the intervention (n = 60, video presentation). Both groups completed a self-efficacy scale (SES) survey before instruction. Then, the intervention group actively participated in a one-session video presentation while the control group was given a traditional lecture. After the presentations, student knowledge was assessed with a hands-on simulated exercise that was scored out of 60 points. At last, students completed a post-instruction student perception and attitude (SPA) survey. Inferential hypothesis testing was conducted with two-sample t-tests, and significance was defined as p ≤ .05. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the student pre-instruction SES scores between the control and intervention groups. After the video learning, CAD/CAM knowledge application during the hands-on simulated exercise showed significantly higher results in the intervention group as the assessment scores from the intervention group averaged 13.6 ± 2.0 points higher than the control group (p < .001). The results from the post-instruction SPA survey showed no statistically significant difference between groups. CONCLUSION: With the video presentation technique, our first-year dental students were able to greatly enhance their CAD/CAM application skills. The results from this study could be applied at other dental educational institutions with potential similar outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Board games can be used as a playful educational practice in the teaching and learning process, as they constitute an educational technology that can be a source of health knowledge and an aid in decision-making. The objective of this research was to assess the effect of a board game on imprisoned women's knowledge about STIs. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in 2022 with 64 imprisoned women who were students at a school located in a prison unit from the city of Recife, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A 32-item instrument was used to assess knowledge about sexually transmitted infections before, immediately after the intervention and at 15 days. The intervention consisted in applying the Previna board game in a classroom. All the analyses were performed in the Stata software, version 16.0, with a 5% significance level. RESULTS: The knowledge mean in the pre-test was 23.62 (± 3.23) points, whereas it rose to 27.93 (± 2,28) in the immediate post-test, dropping to 27.34 (± 2.37) (p < 0.001) in post-test 2, which was performed 15 days after the intervention. There was a statistically significant difference in the means obtained between the pre-test and the immediate post-test (p < 0.001), with a difference of 4.241 points, as well as between the pre-test and post-test 2 (p < 0.001), a difference of 3.846 spots. CONCLUSIONS: The Previna board game significantly increased its players' knowledge about STIs, and such increase in knowledge remained significant during the follow-up period.

Situational tele-mentorship refers to the use of technology to provide interactive, two-way communication between an advisor (the mentor) and a novice (mentee) to enhance the management of a dynamic clinical scenario in real-time.This article develops a conceptual framework to support situational tele-mentorship of healthcare professionals working in rural and remote practices by critically exploring the concept of mentorship within medical education literature and applied to healthcare professionals working in more isolated settings.The situational tele-mentorship framework consists of synchronous telecommunication technologies and the problem-solving process. The end-users of the framework are the mentor located centrally and the mentee dealing with a challenging situation at a remote location using communication technology. The problem-solving process' stages are preparation, identification, action, and evaluation. The mentor and mentee use the 5W1H model, which is a summary of the questions of who, what, where, when, why, and how, applied in two-way communication.This framework provides medical teachers and clinicians with a detailed, yet concise exposition of critical elements required to implement situational tele-mentorship. Healthcare providers can also use this framework to help coordinate resources and manage stakeholders in tele-mentoring situations.

BACKGROUND: Good clinical examination skills can both increase the quality of patient care and reduce its cost. A previous study by our group demonstrated that face-to-face training is the gold standard for teaching these skills. It is unclear if high quality educational videos can augment this teaching. METHODS: Forty-two Medical Students naïve to large joint examination were recruited and block randomised to two groups. The control group had face-to-face teaching alone. The intervention group had their teaching augmented with a custom educational video accessed via a web portal. Participants were assessed on their examination of a large joint using a previously standardised assessment tool at baseline and 7 days post intervention. Assessors were blinded to intervention type. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the mean baseline scores. Mean baseline scores were 3.35 (11.2%, SD = 2.2, SE = 0.49) for the face-to-face only group and 2.65 (8.8%, SD = 1.39, SE = 0.31) for the video adjunct group [p = 0.137]. There was a significant difference in the improvement in score after intervention between each group [p = 0.005]. The mean improvement in score was 15.42 (SD = 5.64, SE = 1.29) for the face-to-face only group and 20.68 (SD = 4.33,SE = 0.99) for the video adjunct group. CONCLUSION: When used as an adjunct to more traditional face-to-face teaching methods, a custom-made educational video significantly improves the teaching of clinical examination skills and there is a role for these resources in augmenting traditional teaching methods.

BACKGROUND: As digital learning becomes more prevalent and important in health professions education, learning technologists play increasingly central roles in designing and delivering learning materials. However, little is understood about the process by which learning technologists have integrated into the existing teaching and learning ecosystem, and it seems that they remain marginal and undervalued. Our aim in this paper was therefore to examine the process of interprofessional co-development of course materials as experienced by educators and learning technologists. METHODS: Our approach was qualitative, using individual semi-structured interviews (conducted between July 2021 to May 2022) to explore the working relationship between faculty and learning technologists. Transcripts were analysed abductively. RESULTS: We found that the attitudes of both faculty and learning technologists towards collaborating to drive digital adoption in health professions education fell into two main themes: "embrace" and "replace" - and "conflict", which we present as a third theme. Our results revealed that faculty did not take an active and agentic role in developing their digital practices in respect of education delivery. Learning technologists positioned themselves as a resource to support faculty's knowledge and skill gap in digital competence. There was an obvious power differential between the two groups: learning technologists lacked agency and seemed in the position of servants to faculty masters. This created barriers to effective collaboration. CONCLUSIONS: By examining the process of co-development of course materials by faculty and learning technologists, we open up a space to examine the social, relational and organisational complexities associated with interprofessional collaboration in digital health professions education. Our study also has important implications for guiding educational policy to better position learning technologists to effectively collaborate with faculty and realise the potential of digital health professions education.

BACKGROUND: This student-centred prospective cohort study evaluated the impact of multimodal teaching methods on student performance in the theoretical domain of dental studies. METHODS: Dental students answered anonymous questionnaires indicating their preferences and opinions three times over three consecutive academic years. Data collected included gender, course, year of study and most frequent and preferred learning modality. Survey responses from Google Forms were analysed with SPSS 20.0 software (IBM Company, Chicago, IL, USA). Scale responses were tested with the Mann-Whitney U test against gender, program and year of study. Grades obtained from structured examinations held in the third academic year were analysed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test according to the teaching method employed. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The response rate was high (> 80%) throughout the study. Acceptance of online modalities increased over time (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.001) and 75% of students requested that online teaching modalities be maintained. Significant differences in gender, program of study, year of study and discipline taught were observed (Mann-Whitney test, p < 0.05). Females differed from males by favouring online modalities and face-to-face lectures, respectively, and clinical year students opted to retain pre-recorded online lectures. Recorded lectures resulted better for teaching core knowledge (Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, p = 0.034), while face-to-face lectures were better for teaching applied knowledge (Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, p = 0.043). Student responses to open-ended questions identified the need for a blended approach with in-person lecturing as an opportunity to socialise and avoid mental health issues. Although preferences varied, students showed a willingness to influence their learning and changes in curriculum, a predilection for self-directed learning and the need for freedom in engaging with resources and content. CONCLUSIONS: In the context of this study, online teaching modalities resulted in comparable examination performance and improved student satisfaction. This highlights the need for a blended approach to teaching.

INTRODUCTION: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a relevant public health problem is worldwide. From the change in the health care of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Primary Health Care (PHC), nurses gained autonomy in their workflow, which requires a significant technological arsenal for the planning, organization and functioning of services. It is believed that the development of a mobile application for the care/prevention of HIV will contribute to the strengthening of care, resulting in greater autonomy and empowerment of nurses in Primary Health Care. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a content script for a mobile application for nurses in PHC containing information about PLHIV management/care in PHC. METHODS: This is a methodological study developed in three phases: exploratory study, content elaboration process and validation by the 16 judges. RESULTS: The application was evaluated and validated satisfactorily in terms of content and appearance, with an average Content Validity Index (CVI) of 0.99 (99%), Item Content Validity Index (I-CVI) and Medium Content Validity (S-IVC/AVE) also obtained satisfactory levels. CONCLUSIONS: The construction of the prototype of an application called LearnHIV, is considered a valid instrument in terms of content and appearance, according to the judges. TRIAL REGISTRATION: None because it is not an intervention study.

INTRODUCTION: Acquiring insights into the framework design of metal-based removable partial dentures (mRPD) is a current challenge in dental education. The aim of the present study was to explore the effectiveness of a novel 3D simulation tool to teach designing mRPD by investigating the learning gain and the acceptance and motivation towards the tool of dental students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3D tool based on 74 clinical scenarios was developed for teaching the design of mRPD. Fifty-three third year dental students were randomly divided into two groups, with the experimental group (n = 26) having access to the tool during 1 week while the control group (n = 27) had no access. Quantitative analysis was based on a pre- and post-test in order to evaluate the learning gain, technology acceptance and motivation towards using the tool. Moreover, qualitative data was collected by means of an interview and focus group to get additional insights into the quantitative results. RESULTS: Although the results showed a higher learning gain for students in the experimental condition, the study did not find a significant difference between both conditions based on quantitative results. However, during the focus groups, all students of the experimental group revealed that the 3D tool improved their understanding of mRPD biomechanics. Moreover, survey results revealed that students positively evaluated the perceived usefulness and ease of use of the tool and indicated to have the intention to use the tool in the future. Suggestions were made for a redesign (e.g. creating scenarios themselves) and further implementation of the tool (e.g. analysing the scenarios in pairs or small groups). CONCLUSION: First results of the evaluation of the new 3D tool for teaching the design framework of mRPD are promising. Further research based on the design-based research methodology is needed to investigate the effects of the redesign on motivation and learning gain.

Educational research is reflective of the nature and structure of national and regional education systems and their historical evolution. Educational technology research, as an area within educational research, reflects this case particularly prominently. Although individual countries and regions have varying research traditions, the publication of research in English as the scientific lingua franca can lead to missing nuances in terminology, which is often not reflected upon. Despite this, the exploration of research from different countries can still uncover diverse topical clusters. This study aims to identify the research topics in educational technology research in three countries (Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom), each with their own research traditions, through the terms used. To this end, a bibliometric analysis of 3034 article abstracts and keywords from 29 English-language Web of Science journals in the field of education and educational research was conducted, with a focus on educational technology. In addition, the quantitative findings are comparatively analysed by considering the corresponding cultural clusters. Main findings include diverse research foci in the three countries, also showing that distinct research traditions are still present, despite using English as lingua franca. Therefore, research articles written in English by non-English authors often do not reflect the same meanings in each country, despite using the same words. The conclusions reflect upon the need to establish ways of understanding the traditions behind those research articles and build collaborative systems to illustrate nuances in this research.

Mixed methods research is becoming more prevalent in educational technology due to its potential for addressing complex educational problems by integrating qualitative and quantitative data and findings. At the same time, a growing chorus of researchers laments the quality and rigor of research in this field. Mixed methods studies which demonstrate explicit integration in educational technology research are scarce, and even fewer apply integration strategies recommended in the literature, such as visual joint displays. Failure to address the challenge of comprehensive integration may result in missed opportunities for deeper insights. To address this methodological problem, the purpose of this paper is to shed light on the procedures, opportunities, and practical challenges associated with mixed methods integration through the use of visual joint displays as an analytical tool for data interpretation and reporting in these types of designs. Using an exploratory sequential mixed methods multiple case study design as an illustrative example, we will (1) provide step-by-step guidance on how to develop a visual joint display to conduct an integrated analysis in a complex mixed methods design; (2) demonstrate how to use a display of this type to integrate meta-inferences previously generated through a series of interconnected joint displays; and (3) illustrate the benefits of integrating at the literature review, theoretical, analysis, interpretation, and reporting levels in mixed methods studies. This methodological article aims to advance knowledge in educational technology research by addressing the integration challenge in mixed methods studies and assisting researchers in this field in achieving comprehensive integration at multiple levels.

Introduction Large language models (LLMs) are designed for recognizing, summarizing, translating, predicting, and generating text-based content from knowledge gained from extensive data sets. ChatGPT4 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4) (OpenAI, San Francisco, California, United States) is a transformer-based LLM model pretrained on public data as well as data obtained from third-party sources using deep learning techniques of fine tuning and reinforcement learning from human feedback to predict the next text. We wanted to explore the role of LLM as a teaching assistant (TA) in plastic surgery. Material and Methods TA roles were first identified in available literature, and based on the roles, a list of suitable tasks was created where LLM could be used to perform the task. Prompts designed to be fed in to the LLM (specifically ChatGPT) to generate appropriate output, were then created and fed to the ChatGPT model. The outputs generated were scored by evaluators and compared for interobserver agreement. Results A final set of eight TA roles were identified where a LLM could be utilized to generate content. These contents were scored for usefulness and accuracy. These were scored independently by the eight study authors in a scoring sheet created for the study. Interobserver agreements for content accuracy, usefulness, and clarity were 100% for content generated for the following: interactive case studies (generation), simulation of preoperative consultations, and generation of ethical considerations. Discussion LLMs in general and ChatGPT (on which this study is based) in specific, can generate answers to questions and prompts based on huge amount of text fed into the model for training the underlying language model. The answers generated have been found to be accurate, readable, and even indistinguishable from human-generated text. This capability of automated content synthesis can be exploited to generate summaries to text, answer short and long answers, and generate case scenarios. We could identify a few such scenarios where the LLM could in general be utilized to play the role of a TA and aid plastic surgery residents in particular. In addition, these models could also be used by students to obtain feedback and gain reflection which itself stimulates critical thinking. Conclusion Incorporating LLMs into the educational arsenal of plastic surgery residency programs can provide a dynamic, interactive, and individualized learning experience for residents and prove to be worthy TAs of future.

RESUMO

During school closures prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, educational technology (EdTech) was often used to continue educational provision. In this article, we consider EdTech effectiveness using a holistic framework, and synthesise findings from 10 primary research studies of EdTech interventions conducted in low- and middle-income countries during the pandemic. The framework includes five main lenses: learning outcomes, enhancing equity, implementation context, cost and affordability, and alignment and scale. While in-person schooling has largely resumed, there continues to be further integration of EdTech into education systems globally. This analysis provides evidence-based insights and highlights knowledge gaps to shape holistic analysis of both EdTech mainstreaming and future research into the effective use of EdTech to strengthen learning.

This study investigated a digital reform initiative, rated excellent by the government, of one higher education institution (HEI) in an Arab State in the Gulf. The focus of the study was to develop a digital typology, while exploring the leadership attributes that characterized the core leadership team, as they accomplished the migration towards a digital culture in one year, within a context where faculty members showed resistance against digitalization. The study was conducted immediately after the implementation of the initiative that took place over the course of one year, just before the Covid-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with all the six key individuals in the leadership team who led this initiative. Data was analyzed using content-based analysis. Findings of the study were used to synthesize a 5D typology for digital leadership attributes: (1) Digital competence; (2) Digital culture; (3) Digital Differentiation; (4) Digital governance; and (5) Digital advocacy. The paper provides in depth discussion how these attributes supported the adaptive ability of a Higher Education Institution towards accepting digitalization.

This quantitative study aimed to better understand how teachers implement technology in a variety of teaching modalities to enhance content delivery and student engagement. More specifically, it aimed to investigate the digital divide of technology usage based upon school setting and usage frequency. Responses were collected using a random sampling method of full-time K-12 public school teachers in a Mid-Atlantic state. The instrument was developed from prior research and examined educator usage frequency of instructional technology in urban, rural, and suburban schools dependent upon teaching modality. A total of 423 participants responded to the researcher-created questionnaire and yielded practical implementations for further study. The findings uncovered significant differences in usage frequency of rural, urban, and suburban teachers utilizing technology dependent upon modality (ex. cooperative learning, small group instruction, student-led research, problem-solving). Results of this investigation contribute to the field through an attempt to foster a discussion of disparities between the integration of technology and school setting. The purpose of this discussion is to identify gaps in the digital divide, apply frameworks geared toward equity, and create professional development opportunities for all educators to differentiate technology usage across multiple teaching modalities.
