RESUMO

Visitation to National Parks in the United States increased by more than 25% since 2010, rising from roughly 70 to 90 million annual visitors. Anecdotes suggest that this increase was driven by the advent of social media in the early-to-mid 2010s, generating a new form of exposure for parks, and has led to concerns about overcrowding and degradation of environmental quality. However, there is little empirical evidence on the role of social media in influencing recreation decisions. Here, I construct a dataset on social media exposure (SME) for each National Park and relate that exposure to changes in visitation over the last two decades. High SME parks see visitation increase by 16 to 22% relative to parks with less exposure, which comes with a concomitant increase in revenue. Low SME parks have no, or negative, changes in visitation. These estimates account for unobserved park heterogeneity and are based on an instrumental variables strategy that predicts exposure with a park's online popularity prior to the social media era. Additional analysis suggests that recent social media posts that include media attachments increase visitation, while posts with negative sentiment reduce visitation. These results provide insight for the National Park Service-which faces more than $22 billion in deferred maintenance costs and is considering policy options to manage demand-as well as for management of recreation on other public lands.

RESUMO

Antarctica, one of the most extreme environments on Earth, hosts diverse microbial communities. These microbes have evolved and adapted to survive in these hostile conditions, but knowledge on the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remains limited. The Italian Collection of Antarctic Bacteria (Collezione Italiana Batteri Antartici (CIBAN)), managed by the University of Messina, represents a valuable repository of cold-adapted bacterial strains isolated from various Antarctic environments. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the genomes of 58 marine Gammaproteobacteria strains from the CIBAN collection, which were isolated during Italian expeditions from 1990 to 2005. By employing genome-scale metrics, we taxonomically characterized these strains and assigned them to four distinct genera: Pseudomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Shewanella, and Psychrobacter. Genome annotation revealed a previously untapped functional potential, including secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters and antibiotic resistance genes. Phylogenomic analyses provided evolutionary insights, while assessment of cold-shock protein presence shed light on adaptation mechanisms. Our study emphasizes the significance of CIBAN as a resource for understanding Antarctic microbial life and its biotechnological potential. The genomic data unveil new horizons for insight into bacterial existence in Antarctica.

RESUMO

Over the past few years, the pace of fossil fuel consumption has witnessed an accelerating trend across the world which has been really noticeable especially for the power generation sector. With regard to its global importance, the environment must be also preserved and emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs) as well as environmental costs need to be moderated. Given the urgency of energy preservation and environmental issues, the process of electricity generation should be evaluated. Accordingly, elimination of conditions along with prediction of energy consumption and pollutant emissions have been performed through energy simulation and modeling software tools, e.g., Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP). The energy consumption in thermal power plants for 2035 is estimated to be 209.7, 153.5, and 132.0 Bcm respectively for Reference (REF), Efficiency based on 5-Year National Development Plan (E5P), and Efficiency similar to UK (EUK) scenarios using efficiency improvement scenario of thermal power plants in Iran. GHG emissions for 2035 are thus predicted by 456.8 MtCO2-eq for the REF scenario, and 332.6 and 285.1 MtCO2-eq for the E5P and the EUK ones, respectively. Environmental costs for electricity generation system will also diminish via applying scenarios in this sector and its least amount, that is, US$835.8 million is related to the EUK scenario. Accomplishing goals such as better preservation of fossil resources and the environment will be consequently facilitated through improved efficiency and effectiveness of consumption of energy resources. To meet the objectives of environmental preservation, it is suggested to completely implement development plans and also make attempts to promote the technology of thermal power plants in Iran similar to that in developed countries. This study also compares the findings with those reported in recently published investigations.

RESUMO

The exploitation and degradation of natural environments exert intense pressure on important ecosystems worldwide. Thus, it is necessary developing or adapting assessment methods to monitor environmental changes and to generate results to be applied to environmental management programs. The Brazilian Veredas (phytophysiognomies typical to the Cerrado biome) are threatened by several human activities; thus, the aim of the present study is to adapt a rapid assessment protocol (RAP) to be applied to Veredas springs, by using the upper course of the Vai-e-Vem stream watershed (Ipameri County, Goiás State, Brazil). Therefore, several springs in the study site were visited and 11 of them were considered Veredas springs. After the RAP was adapted, the instrument was validated and used to environmentally assess the springs in order to demonstrate its applicability. The present study has provided an instrument of option to monitor Veredas springs.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to determine the effects of seasonal variation on phenotypic variation in Culex bastagarius, using geometric morphometric analysis based on wing shape and size. Samples were collected in the Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mosquitoes were captured once every 2 months (December 2012-January 2014) using light traps. The results of geometric morphometric analysis revealed variations in wing size; however, variability was not evident in wing shape. The present study provides novel data regarding phenotypic plasticity of Cx. bastagarius that have been scarcely addressed in the past.

RESUMO

A forest fire risk map is a basic element for planning and protecting forested areas. The main goal of this study was to develop a statistical model for preparing a forest fire risk map using GIS. Such model is based on assigning weights to nine variables divided into two classes: physical factors of the site (terrain slope, land-use/occupation, proximity to roads, terrain orientation, and altitude) and climatic factors (precipitation, temperature, water deficit, and evapotranspiration). In regions where the climate is different from the conditions of this study, the model will require an adjustment of the variables weights according to the local climate. The study area, Espírito Santo State, exhibited approximately 3.81% low risk, 21.18% moderate risk, 30.10% high risk, 41.50% very high risk, and 3.40% extreme risk of forest fire. The areas classified as high risk, very high and extreme, contemplated a total of 78.92% of heat spots.

RESUMO

Anaerobic digestion of wheat was investigated under batch conditions. The article compares the potential net energy yield between a winter wheat (sown in the autumn) and a spring wheat (sown in the spring) grown in the same year and harvested at the same growth stage in the same farm. The spring wheat had a slightly higher biochemical methane potential and required lower energy inputs in cultivation, but produced a lower dry biomass yield per hectare, which resulted in winter wheat providing the best overall net energy yield. The difference was small; both varieties gave a good net energy yield. Spring sowing may also offer the opportunity for growing an additional over-winter catch crop for spring harvest, thus increasing the overall biomass yield per hectare, with both crops being potential digester feedstocks.

RESUMO

Sequential treatments consisting in a chemical process followed by a conventional biological treatment, have been applied to remove mixtures of nine contaminants of pharmaceutical type spiked in a primary sedimentation effluent of a municipal wastewater. Combinations of ozone, UVA black light (BL) and Fe(III) or Fe3O4 catalysts constituted the chemical systems. Regardless of the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP), the removal of pharmaceutical compounds was achieved in 1 h of reaction, while total organic carbon (TOC) only diminished between 3.4 and 6%. Among selected ozonation systems to be implemented before the biological treatment, the application of ozone alone in the pre-treatment stage is recommended due to the increase of the biodegradability observed. The application of ozone followed by the conventional biological treatment leads high TOC and COD removal rates, 60 and 61%, respectively, and allows the subsequent biological treatment works with shorter hydraulic residence time (HRT). Moreover, the influence of the application of AOPs before and after a conventional biological process was compared, concluding that the decision to take depends on the characterization of the initial wastewater with pharmaceutical compounds.

RESUMO

Hypochlorite (ClO-) and gallium (Ⅲ) ions (Ga3+) have extensive applications in various human industries and daily activities. However, their inherent toxicity poses significant risks to environmental preservation and human well-being. Hence, the development of reliable and handy detection tools for ClO- and Ga3+ in the environment and food is crucial. In this study, a ratiometric fluorescent probe was prepared based on benzothiazolaldehyde and pyridine-2-carboxylic acid hydrazide, which exhibited exceptional performance characteristics for the selective detection of ClO- and Ga3+. These features include high specificity, low detection limits (0.28 µM for ClO-, 0.13 µM for Ga3+), mild pH conditions (pH 4-11 for ClO-, pH 6-11 for Ga3+), fast response time (within 30 s), as well as versatile applicability across different matrices such as water, soil, food, and plant samples. Additionally, this probe can be used with a smartphone color recognition app. The probe offers a convenient and effective tool for the detection of ClO- and Ga3+, demonstrating its potential application value in environmental monitoring and food safety.

RESUMO

An effective method for removing selenium (Se) from water is required from the viewpoint of environmental preservation. To establish this method, a cation exchange resin that adsorbed ferric ions was applied as an adsorbent. In this study, the adsorption behavior of Se to the adsorbent was examined by both batch and column methods. The batch experiment confirmed that selenite ions (Se(IV)) are effectively adsorbed but selenate ions (Se(VI)) are hardly adsorbed. To elucidate the adsorption mechanism, the Fe in the adsorbent and the Fe in the adsorbent after the adsorption of Se(IV) were characterized by Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and 57Fe Mӧssbauer spectroscopy. The analytical result of Se K-edge EXAFS spectra for the Se(IV) adsorbed on the adsorbent suggests that Se(IV) are adsorbed specifically to the adsorbent through the formation of Fe-O-Se bonds. The breakthrough curve obtained by the column experiment showed that Se(IV) in 3 tons of synthetic solution containing 0.1 ppm Se can be efficiently removed using a column in which 12.8 g (10.4 cm3) of the adsorbent was packed.

RESUMO

Increasing industrialization, urbanization, and a failure of many world leaders to appreciate the consequences of climate change are deleteriously impacting quality of life as well as diminishing the prospects for long term survival. Economic competitiveness and corporate profitability often pre-empt environmental concerns. The calving of an iceberg in Antarctica and the hurricane activity in the Caribbean during 2017 are unfortunate illustrations of the continuing escalation of environmental issues. We provide historical and current evidence for the importance of Nature Exposure (NE) and introduce the continuum Nature Exposure Sufficiency (NES) and Insufficiency (NEI). Insufficiency includes impoverished environments (e.g., slums and prisons) where nature exposure is very limited. Nature Exposure Sufficiency (NES) is an optimal amount of exposure to nature where many benefits such as reinvigoration can be obtained by everyone. NES also has several benefits for individuals with various health conditions such as arthritis, dementia, or depression. The benefits of NE are not just derivable from parks, forests, and other natural settings. Interiors of buildings and homes can be enhanced with plants and even pictures or objects from nature. Additionally, there is abundant evidence indicating that virtual and artificial environments depicting nature can provide substantial NE and therefore contribute to general wellbeing. Besides the difficulty in achieving cooperation amongst nations, corporations, and other collectives in developing and implementing long range plans to deal with climate change, there is also sometimes an aversion at the individual level whereby people are unwilling to experience nature due to insects and other discomforts. Such individuals are often averse to supplanting the comforts of home, even temporarily, with inadequate facilities that are seemingly less pleasant than their typical dwellings. We propose using the term Nature Exposure Aversion (NEA) to describe such behavior and propose that the aversion is largely due to conditioning. Such behavior may be addressed through desensitization in virtual environments which in turn may contribute to an endorsement of the view that climate change is occurring and must be dealt with. The issues of Nature Exposure Sufficiency and Insufficiency are intertwined with the sustainability of the planet and future planning and efforts to deal with the environment. If the outcome is unfavorable, the descent of civilization will be more rapid than the ascent.

The environmental issue is a field of great importance today, especially with regard to studies on pro-environmental values. A commonly investigated interaction is the relationship between connection with nature and locus of control, especially considering the individuals' beliefs that their actions are important for the conservation of the environment. The study included 898 university students, which 452 (49.8%) were men, 456 (50.2%) were women of average age, of 28.87 (SD = 8.90) years old, from the state of Rio de Janeiro. For purposes of internal validity, factor analysis procedures were used. The scale was also analyzed together with the measure of connection with nature, to offer initial evidence of concurrent validity. Connection with nature was measured using the scale proposed by Mayer and Frantz (2004). The Locus Scale for Environmental Preservation Control was developed in this study. Considering the results obtained, it is possible to affirm a satisfactory quality of the measure developed.

RESUMO

Abstract In this contribution we examine the diversity, abundance and species richness of Calliphoridae in the Tijuca National Park, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Specimens were collected monthly between September 2009 and August 2010, using sardines as bait, in three points: A, on the forest edge (22°56’846"S 43°17’496"W), B, 700m from it (22°57’073"S 43°17’832"W) and C, 1,200m into the forest (22°57’321"S 43°18’031"W), evaluating the indicator species at each point and the anthropogenic influences and abiotic factors that determine species distribution. A total of 16,364 Calliphoridae were collected and 17 species were identified. Species abundance was strongly positively correlated with temperature. The greatest number of flies was collected at A, but in this point, diversity was lower and most individuals collected belonged to the dominant species. Point C, conversely, had the lower abundance and the highest diversity. Chrysomya megacephala, an urban and synanthropic species, was dominant at point A, whereas Laneela nigripes and Mesembrinella peregrina, typically forest species, were considered indicators at points B and C, respectively, showing that the anthropogenic influence is more intense at the forest edge.
