RESUMO

It is well-known that trans and non-binary individuals experience worse health outcomes due to experiences of violence and discrimination. For this reason, accessible healthcare for trans and non-binary people is crucial. There is a lack of Canadian literature on the experiences of non-binary people within the healthcare system. This study sought to understand barriers to healthcare among non-binary people living in a mid-sized urban/rural region of Canada. Interviews were conducted between November 2019 to March 2020 with 12 non-binary individuals assigned female at birth, living in Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada, as a part of a larger qualitative study exploring experiences within the community, healthcare and employment. Three broad themes were developed: erasure, barriers to access to healthcare, and assessing whether (or not) to come out. Sub-themes included institutional erasure, informational erasure, general healthcare barriers, medical transition healthcare barriers, anticipated discrimination, and assessing safety. Policy and institutional changes are needed to increase the safety and accessibility of healthcare services to non-binary individuals.

We present a modified version of the Szilard engine, demonstrating that an explicit measurement procedure is entirely unnecessary for its operation. By considering our modified engine, we are able to provide a new interpretation of Landauer's original argument for the cost of erasure. From this view, we demonstrate that a reset operation is strictly impossible in a dynamical system with only conservative forces. Then, we prove that approaching a reset yields an unavoidable instability at the reset point. Finally, we present an original proof of Landauer's principle that is completely independent from the Second Law of thermodynamics.

Having a multiplicity of identities not only makes it difficult to find inclusive spaces for Aboriginal bisexual+ (bi) people but may often be a barrier to building connections and relationships with people who have other queer identities. Bi + identities alone are often rendered invisible, unintelligible or erased when it comes to inclusion and solidarity among their peers. An intersectional lens is used to reflexively investigate existing literature to explore how a lack of solidarity among lateral communities may impact Aboriginal bi + people in Australia who face an array of racism and queerphobia from both LGBTQ + and Aboriginal communities. These unique and multifaceted layers of discrimination greatly impact mental health and wellbeing. These experiences stem from the heterosexist and monosexist status quo from heteropatriarchal settler colonialism that is seen in both Aboriginal and LGBTQ + communities respectively. As a result, Aboriginal queer people are constantly surveying risks, policing their own identities and identity expression, often hiding parts of their identity as a survival strategy to avoid rejection and adhere to dominant cultural norms. When specifically considering Aboriginal bi + identities, there are added unique stressors of lateral violence with other LGBTQ + groups, antibisexual prejudice, and assumed monosexuality, adding additional layers of minority stress. The author explores these experiences by extending upon borderland theory and minority stress models. Whilst there is solace in the holistic celebration of intersecting identities in emerging intersectional Aboriginal queer spaces, there is still a great need for solidarity and celebration of Aboriginal bi + people within the broader LGBTQ + community.

In this contribution, dynamic photoinduced wrinkle erasure enabled by photomechanical changes in supramolecular polymer-azo complexes was characterized via confocal microscopy. Different photoactive molecules, disperse yellow 7 (DY7) and 4,4'-dihydroxyazobenzene (DHAB), were compared to 4-hydroxy-4'-dimethylaminoazobenzene (OH-azo-DMA). The characteristic erasure times of wrinkles were quickly assessed by using an image processing algorithm. The results confirm that the photoinduced movement on the topmost layer can be successfully transferred to the substrate. Furthermore, the chosen supramolecular strategy allows decoupling the effect of molecular weight of the polymer and photochemistry of the chromophore, allowing quantitative comparison of wrinkling erasure efficiency of different materials and providing a facile way to optimize the system for specific applications.

Erasure-code-based storage systems suffer from problems such as long repair time and low I/O performance, resulting in high repair costs. For many years, researchers have focused on reducing the cost of repairing erasure-code-based storage systems. In this study, we discuss the demerits of node selecting, data transferring and data repair in erasure-code-based storage systems. Based on the network topology and node structure, we propose SDNC-Repair, a cooperative data repair strategy based on erasure code for SDS (Software Defined Storage), and describe its framework. Then, we propose a data source selection algorithm that senses the available network bandwidth between nodes and a data flow scheduling algorithm in SDNC-Repair. Additionally, we propose a data repair method based on node collaboration and data aggregation. Experiments illustrate that the proposed method has better repair performance under different data granularities. Compared to the conventional repair method, although the SDNC-Repair is more constrained by the cross-rack bandwidth, it improves system throughput effectively and significantly reduces data repair time in scenarios where multiple nodes fail and bandwidth is limited.

The cerebellum is involved in the acquisition and consolidation of learned fear responses. Knowledge about its contribution to extinction learning, however, is sparse. Extinction processes likely involve erasure of memories, but there is ample evidence that at least part of the original memory remains. We asked the question whether memory persists within the cerebellum following extinction training. The renewal effect, that is the reoccurrence of the extinguished fear memory during recall in a context different from the extinction context, constitutes one of the phenomena indicating that memory of extinguished learned fear responses is not fully erased during extinction training. We performed a differential AB-A/B fear conditioning paradigm in a 7-Tesla (7T) MRI system in 31 young and healthy men. On day 1, fear acquisition training was performed in context A and extinction training in context B. On day 2, recall was tested in contexts A and B. As expected, participants learned to predict that the CS+ was followed by an aversive electric shock during fear acquisition training. Skin conductance responses (SCRs) were significantly higher to the CS+ compared to the CS- at the end of acquisition. Differences in SCRs vanished in extinction and reoccurred in the acquisition context during recall indicating renewal. Fitting SCR data, a deep neural network model was trained to predict the correct shock value for a given stimulus and context. Event-related fMRI analysis with model-derived prediction values as parametric modulations showed significant effects on activation of the posterolateral cerebellum (lobules VI and Crus I) during recall. Since the prediction values differ based on stimulus (CS+ and CS-) and context during recall, data provide support that the cerebellum is involved in context-related recall of learned fear associations. Likewise, mean ß values were highest in lobules VI and Crus I bilaterally related to the CS+ in the acquisition context during early recall. A similar pattern was seen in the vermis, but only on a trend level. Thus, part of the original memory likely remains within the cerebellum following extinction training. We found cerebellar activations related to the CS+ and CS- during fear acquisition training which likely reflect associative and non-associative aspects of the task. Cerebellar activations, however, were not significantly different for CS+ and CS-. Since the CS- was never followed by an electric shock, the cerebellum may contribute to associative learning related to the CS, for example as a safety cue.

Partial occlusion and background clutter in camera video surveillance affect the accuracy of video-based person re-identification (re-ID). To address these problems, we propose a person re-ID method based on random erasure of frame sampling and temporal weight aggregation of mutual information of partial and global features. First, for the case in which the target person is interfered or partially occluded, the frame sampling-random erasure (FSE) method is used for data enhancement to effectively alleviate the occlusion problem, improve the generalization ability of the model, and match persons more accurately. Second, to further improve the re-ID accuracy of video-based persons and learn more discriminative feature representations, we use a ResNet-50 network to extract global and partial features and fuse these features to obtain frame-level features. In the time dimension, based on a mutual information-temporal weight aggregation (MI-TWA) module, the partial features are added according to different weights and the global features are added according to equal weights and connected to output sequence features. The proposed method is extensively experimented on three public video datasets, MARS, DukeMTMC-VideoReID, and PRID-2011; the mean average precision (mAP) values are 82.4%, 94.1%, and 95.3% and Rank-1 values are 86.4%, 94.8%, and 95.2%, respectively.

The decennial Census survey marks the emergence of federal classifications of race and ethnicity by which the U.S. government has historically conflated Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI, hereafter) as "Asian or Pacific Islander." This conflation amplifies health injustices and inequities of NHPIs through multiple mechanisms because it masks the complex and heterogeneous experiences of NHPIs, whose positions and relations with the settler state are qualitatively and substantially distinct from Asian Americans. This critical review examines federal documents and research to examine how the panethnic categorizations are often sustained through scientific inquiry and methodologies. We found that self-determination and self-identification for NHPIs are impeded by settler-colonial relations between U.S. colonization of parts of Oceania (e.g., Hawai'i, Samoa, Fiji, and Guam) and the forcefully imposed categorization that continues to be in use to legitimize the domination of Indigenous Peoples through race misclassification. Specifically, Census data collection fails to capture accurate and reliable data due to serious methodological limitations. These implications for psychological research compel us to make several recommendations for psychologists: (1) engage with NHPI community partners in all research processes; (2) critically examine Census research design and consider oversampling NHPI households to ensure just data representation; (3) meaningfully engage when, whether and how to aggregate Asian Americans with NHPIs; and (4) use Indigeneity as a critical framework.

Blaum-Roth Codes are binary maximum distance separable (MDS) array codes over the binary quotient ring F2[x]/(Mp(x)), where Mp(x)=1+x+⋯+xp-1, and p is a prime number. Two existing all-erasure decoding methods for Blaum-Roth codes are the syndrome-based decoding method and the interpolation-based decoding method. In this paper, we propose a modified syndrome-based decoding method and a modified interpolation-based decoding method that have lower decoding complexity than the syndrome-based decoding method and the interpolation-based decoding method, respectively. Moreover, we present a fast decoding method for Blaum-Roth codes based on the LU decomposition of the Vandermonde matrix that has a lower decoding complexity than the two modified decoding methods for most of the parameters.

An approach for the cryptographic security enhancement of encryption is proposed and analyzed. The enhancement is based on the employment of a coding scheme and degradation of the ciphertext. From the perspective of the legitimate parties that share a secret key, the degradation appears as a transmission of the ciphertext through a binary erasure channel. On the other hand, from the perspective of an attacker the degradation appears as a transmission of the ciphertext over a binary deletion channel. Cryptographic security enhancement is analyzed based on the capacity of the related binary deletion channel. An illustrative implemementation framework is pointed out.

In this special issue we asked the question "Is lesbian identity obsolete?" We posed this provocation in order to think through what has changed about lesbian identities and their articulations in the face of recent developments-from the rise of transphobia in the name of feminism to increased income inequality and gentrification and the accompanying loss of community spaces. The special issue turned into a triple issue receiving a large number of submissions from across the world. A synthesis of the articles suggests several threads. First, lesbian identity remains important to many women across the world. Whereas some academic writing and communities in the United States have shifted toward queerness, this move is resisted among many lesbians, especially in communities outside of the U.S. Women who sustain lesbian identity must confront attacks that morph and change across time and space. Some lesbians are marginalized because they are seen as psychologically deviant, whereas others are framed as criminals; a more recent form of marginalization equates lesbianism with transphobia. To face these attacks, lesbian intellectual traditions offer an understanding of lesbian identity as political, nonessentialist, intersectional, and community grounded. The rejection of the "born this way narrative" of lesbian identity allows lesbianism to be inclusive of different configurations of gender identities including trans, nonbinary, and cis women as well as sexual orientations including bisexuality, demisexuality, and asexuality. An understanding of lesbianism as grounded in politics of inclusion and solidarity sustains the power of the lesbian movement to fight the rise of neo-fascism and the devastation of climate change.

Opening with a reflection on lesbian invisibility, "Lesbian Vitality: A Provocation" challenges the idea of lesbian erasure, particularly when it is used in relationship to transgender people. Arguing for a multiplicity of lesbian identities and spaces for capacious lesbian formations, the author draws from the history of the periodical Sinister Wisdom and her experiences editing it to call for lesbian vitality as an alternative to erasure and as a focus for lesbian and queer women's community-making and cultural production.

BACKGROUND: DNA is a promising storage medium for high-density long-term digital data storage. Since DNA synthesis and sequencing are still relatively expensive tasks, the coding methods used to store digital data in DNA should correct errors and avoid unstable or error-prone DNA sequences. Near-optimal rateless erasure codes, also called fountain codes, are particularly interesting codes to realize high-capacity and low-error DNA storage systems, as shown by Erlich and Zielinski in their approach based on the Luby transform (LT) code. Since LT is the most basic fountain code, there is a large untapped potential for improvement in using near-optimal erasure codes for DNA storage. RESULTS: We present NOREC4DNA, a software framework to use, test, compare, and improve near-optimal rateless erasure codes (NORECs) for DNA storage systems. These codes can effectively be used to store digital information in DNA and cope with the restrictions of the DNA medium. Additionally, they can adapt to possible variable lengths of DNA strands and have nearly zero overhead. We describe the design and implementation of NOREC4DNA. Furthermore, we present experimental results demonstrating that NOREC4DNA can flexibly be used to evaluate the use of NORECs in DNA storage systems. In particular, we show that NORECs that apparently have not yet been used for DNA storage, such as Raptor and Online codes, can achieve significant improvements over LT codes that were used in previous work. CONCLUSION: NOREC4DNA is a flexible and extensible software framework for using, evaluating, and comparing NORECs for DNA storage systems.

Cells in tissues undergo transdifferentiation programs when stimulated by specific mechanical and biochemical signals. While seminal studies have demonstrated that exogenous biochemical factors can reprogram somatic cells into pluripotent stem cells, the critical roles played by mechanical signals in such reprogramming process have not been well documented. In this paper, we show that laterally confined growth of fibroblasts on micropatterned substrates induces nuclear reprogramming with high efficiency in the absence of any exogenous reprogramming factors. We provide compelling evidence on the induction of stem cell-like properties using alkaline phosphatase assays and expression of pluripotent markers. Early onset of reprogramming was accompanied with enhanced nuclear dynamics and changes in chromosome intermingling degrees, potentially facilitating rewiring of the genome. Time-lapse analysis of promoter occupancy by immunoprecipitation of H3K9Ac chromatin fragments revealed that epithelial, proliferative, and reprogramming gene promoters were progressively acetylated, while mesenchymal promoters were deacetylated by 10 days. Consistently, RNA sequencing analysis showed a systematic progression from mesenchymal to stem cell transcriptome, highlighting pathways involving mechanisms underlying nuclear reprogramming. We then demonstrated that these mechanically reprogrammed cells could be maintained as stem cells and can be redifferentiated into multiple lineages with high efficiency. Importantly, we also demonstrate the induction of cancer stemness properties in MCF7 cells grown in such laterally confined conditions. Collectively, our results highlight an important generic property of somatic cells that, when grown in laterally confined conditions, acquire stemness. Such mechanical reprogramming of somatic cells demonstrated here has important implications in tissue regeneration and disease models.

Monomial codes were recently equipped with partial order relations, a fact that allowed researchers to discover structural properties and efficient algorithm for constructing polar codes. Here, we refine the existing order relations in the particular case of the binary erasure channel. The new order relation takes us closer to the ultimate order relation induced by the pointwise evaluation of the Bhattacharyya parameter of the synthetic channels, which is still a partial order relation. To overcome this issue, we appeal to a related technique from network theory. Reliability network theory was recently used in the context of polar coding and more generally in connection with decreasing monomial codes. In this article, we investigate how the concept of average reliability is applied for polar codes designed for the binary erasure channel. Instead of minimizing the error probability of the synthetic channels, for a particular value of the erasure parameter p, our codes minimize the average error probability of the synthetic channels. By means of basic network theory results, we determine a closed formula for the average reliability of a particular synthetic channel, that recently gain the attention of researchers.

We consider the problem of designing grid quorum systems for maximum distance separable (MDS) erasure code based distributed storage systems. Quorums are used as a mechanism to maintain consistency in replication based storage systems, for which grid quorums have been shown to produce optimal load characteristics. This motivates the study of grid quorums in the context of erasure code based distributed storage systems. We show how grid quorums can be built for erasure coded data, investigate the load characteristics of these quorum systems, and demonstrate how sequential consistency is achieved even in the presence of storage node failures.

We consider state changes in quantum theory due to "conditional action" and relate these to the discussion of entropy decrease due to interventions of "intelligent beings" and the principles of Szilard and Landauer/Bennett. The mathematical theory of conditional actions is a special case of the theory of "instruments", which describes changes of state due to general measurements and will therefore be briefly outlined in the present paper. As a detailed example, we consider the imperfect erasure of a qubit that can also be viewed as a conditional action and will be realized by the coupling of a spin to another small spin system in its ground state.

It is well known that there is a correspondence between convolutional codes and discrete-time linear systems over finite fields. In this paper, we employ the linear systems representation of a convolutional code to develop a decoding algorithm for convolutional codes over the erasure channel. In this kind of channel, which is important due to its use for data transmission over the Internet, the receiver knows if a received symbol is correct. We study the decoding problem using the state space description of a convolutional code, and this provides in a natural way additional information. With respect to previously known decoding algorithms, our new algorithm has the advantage that it is able to reduce the decoding delay as well as the computational effort in the erasure recovery process. We describe which properties a convolutional code should have in order to obtain a good decoding performance and illustrate it with an example.

As the expenses of medical care administrations rise and medical services experts are becoming rare, it is up to medical services organizations and institutes to consider the implementation of medical Health Information Technology (HIT) innovation frameworks. HIT permits health associations to smooth out their considerable cycles and offer types of assistance in a more productive and financially savvy way. With the rise of Cloud Storage Computing (CSC), an enormous number of associations and undertakings have moved their healthcare data sources to distributed storage. As the information can be mentioned whenever universally, the accessibility of information becomes an urgent need. Nonetheless, outages in cloud storage essentially influence the accessibility level. Like the other basic variables of cloud storage (e.g., reliability quality, performance, security, and protection), availability also directly impacts the data in cloud storage for e-Healthcare systems. In this paper, we systematically review cloud storage mechanisms concerning the healthcare environment. Additionally, in this paper, the state-of-the-art cloud storage mechanisms are critically reviewed for e-Healthcare systems based on their characteristics. In short, this paper summarizes existing literature based on cloud storage and its impact on healthcare, and it likewise helps researchers, medical specialists, and organizations with a solid foundation for future studies in the healthcare environment.

Two professionals who treated Jack Adcock before his death were convicted of gross negligence manslaughter, receiving 24-month suspended sentences. His nurse, Isabel Amaro, was erased from the nursing register; but after reviews in the High Court and Court of Appeal, his doctor, Hadiza Bawa-Garba, was merely suspended. This article explores the proposition that nurses are at greater risk of erasure than doctors after gross negligence manslaughter through a close reading of the guidance for medical and nursing tribunals informed by analysis from the High Court and Court of Appeal in the Bawa-Garba cases. Examination of the relevant sections of the guidance for medical and nursing tribunals reveals no significant differences. An outline of the conduct that amounted to breach of duty of care by Amaro and Bawa-Garba shows that their conduct could satisfy the thresholds for erasure given in their professions' respective guidelines for tribunals. Both presented similar mitigating evidence, although this cannot be weighed heavily in a professional tribunal setting. Thus, Amaro was treated more harshly than Bawa-Garba without a simple explanation. However, I suggest that the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Conduct and Competence Committee made a mistaken 'presumption of erasure' for gross negligence manslaughter and misinterpreted the sway that sentencing remarks should hold over tribunals. Both of these types of error were criticised by the Court of Appeal in Bawa-Garba. Furthermore, the Conduct and Competence Committee did not flesh out its analysis of 'public confidence' or acknowledge Lord Hoffmann's caution against ending 'useful' careers for the sake of public confidence, but Bawa-Garba's legal team ensured these arguments were taken into account by the Medical Professional Tribunal. The Conduct and Competence Committee's failures are not inherent to Nursing and Midwifery Council procedure or policy. Rather Amaro's self-representation appears to have impaired her access to justice. Tribunals must accept their right, and responsibility, to reach their own conclusions.
