Two types of aluminous paragneiss from the Loosdorf complex (Bohemian Massif, NE Austria) contain coarse-grained granulite assemblages and retrograde reaction textures that are investigated to constrain the post-peak history of the Gföhl unit in the southern Bohemian Massif. Both types have a peak assemblage garnet-biotite-sillimanite-plagioclase-K-feldspar-quartz-granitic melt ± kyanite ± ilmenite ± rutile, recording peak metamorphic conditions of â¼0.9-1.1 GPa and â¼780-820°C estimated by isochemical phase equilibrium modelling. The first sample type (Ysper paragneiss) developed (i) cordierite coronae around garnet and (ii) cordierite-spinel and cordierite-quartz reaction textures at former garnet-sillimanite interfaces. Calculated chemical potential relationships indicate that the textures formed in the course of a post-peak near-isothermal decompression path reaching â¼0.4 GPa. Texture formation follows a two-step process. Initially, cordierite coronae grow between garnet and sillimanite. As these coronae thicken, they facilitate the development of local compositional domains, leading to the formation of cordierite-spinel and cordierite-quartz symplectites. The second sample type (Pielach paragneiss) exhibits only discontinuous cordierite coronae around garnet porphyroblasts but lacks symplectites. The formation of cordierite there also indicates near-isothermal decompression to 0.4-0.5 GPa and 750-800°C. This relatively hot decompression path is explained by the contemporaneous exhumation of a large HP-UHT granulite body now underlying the Loosdorf complex. The timing of regional metamorphism in the granulites and the southern Bohemian Massif in general is well constrained and has its peak at â¼340 Ma. Monazite from Loosdorf paragneiss samples yield a slightly younger age of â¼335 Ma. Although the ages overlap within error, they are interpreted to reflect near-isothermal decompression and exhumation resulting in the formation of the observed reaction textures.

Asbestosis is an interstitial lung disease caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers and poses a significant risk to individuals working in construction, shipping, mining, and related industries. In a forensic context, postmortem investigations are crucial for accurate diagnosis, for which the gold standard is the histopathological examination. This case report describes the autopsy and related investigations conducted on an 84-year-old man, nearly one year (357 days) after his death. After a post-mortem CT scan, an autoptic investigation was performed, followed by histopathological, immunohistochemical, and scanning electron microscopy examinations. The integration of the evidence from these examinations with previously available personal and clinical information conclusively confirmed the diagnosis of asbestosis. We demonstrated the efficacy and reliability of our diagnostic protocol in detecting asbestosis and asbestos fibers and excluding mesothelioma even in decomposed tissues. According to our findings autopsy remains the diagnostic gold standard in cases of suspected asbestosis within a forensic context, even 1 year after death, therefore it is always highly recommended, even in cases where the body has decomposed.

In the town of Calera y Chozas (Spain), five mass graves containing the remains of 28 individuals were discovered during a 2012 excavation. The witnesses and historical evidence indicated that the body of the last Republican mayor of the town, Felipe Fernández Varela, who had died in September 1939, was located in the mass grave designated as no. 1. Within this particular grave, only two bodies were found. Anthropological analysis showed that the first individual was significantly younger than 50 years, being the mayor's age at the time of death, while the age of the second individual was closer to 50. This second individual had a fractured skull, with a depression on the left parietal bone, and there were unmistakable signs of autopsy, which consisted of cut marks on the frontal bone and the sternal extremity of the right clavicle. Further historical research revealed documents concerning the autopsy performed on this individual. Although, according to the report, the cause of death was a stroke - the consequence of atherosclerosis and alcoholism - no reference was made to the forceful impact to the skull or intracranial bleeding. Considering the size of the fracture on the skull and the fact that there were no signs of bone healing, we believe that this impact, and not the stroke, was the direct cause of the death of the last Republican mayor. The mayor's case is a clear example of the role forensic medicine performed at the beginning of Franco's dictatorship. The task was not only to conceal the crime but also to tarnish the victim's name.

In Poland, during the World War II, almost 3 million people were killed during the Nazi occupation, and about 570,000 during the Soviet occupation. Furthermore, historians have estimated that after the World War II at least 30,000 people were killed during the Stalinist regime in Poland (1944-1956). The exact number is unknown, because both executions and burials were kept secret. Thousands of people just vanished. As a response to those events, forensic scientists from the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin in cooperation with historians from the Institute of National Remembrance started the project of the Polish Genetic Database of Victims of Totalitarianism, which aim is to identify victims killed in the years 1939-1956. Several exhumations were done under the project, with the biggest one done in Bialystok. According to the information gathered by local historians, a detention centre in Bialystok was the place of the secret burials in late 1940s and 1950s. Surprisingly, except few graves from the post-war period, most of the burials found in Bialystok indicated that majority the victims were probably local civilians who died during the Nazi occupation. Unfortunately, data concerning what happened in the detention ward during that period of time is not very detailed. What was known is that people who got incarcerated were "political prisoners" what, according to Nazi politics, was based on their nationality, religion and activity against the Third Reich. The aim of this research was to test genetically the remains found in Bialystok to determine their possible ethnic background, in order to shed new light on the victims and what happened in the Bialystok detention centre during the Nazi occupation. The analysis of male specific region of the human Y chromosome shows that including phylogenetic analysis into the complex process led by the Polish Genetic Database of Victims of Totalitarianism may help with the final identification of hundreds of anonymous victims.

We present a regional analysis of new low-temperature thermochronometer ages from the Central Andean fore arc to provide insights into the exhumation history of the western Andean margin. To derive exhumation rates over 10 million-year timescales, 38 new apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He ages were analyzed along six ~500-km long near-equal-elevation, coast parallel, transects in the Coastal Cordillera (CC) and higher-elevation Precordillera (PC) of the northern Chilean Andes between latitudes 18.5°S and 22.5°S. These transects were augmented with age-elevation profiles where possible. Results are synthesized with previously published thermochronometric data, corroborating a previously observed trenchward increase in cooling ages in Peru and northern Chile. One-dimensional thermal-kinematic modeling of all available multichronometer equal-elevation samples reveals mean exhumation rates of <0.2 km/Myr since ~50 Ma in the PC and ~100 Ma in the CC. Regression of pseudovertical age-elevation transects in the CC yields comparable rates of ~0.05 to ~0.12 km/Myr between ~40 and 80 Ma. Differences between the long-term mean 1-D rates and shorter-term age-elevation-derived rates indicate low variability in the exhumation history. Modeling results suggest similar background exhumation rates in the CC and PC; younger ages in the PC are largely a function of increased heat flow and consequently an elevated geothermal gradient near the arc. Slow exhumation rates are suggestive of semiarid conditions across the region since at least the Eocene and deformation and development of the Andean fore arc around this time.

The process of personal identification differs according to the state of preservation of the corpse, becoming more complicated when dealing with remains altered by taphonomic variables. Since 2015, the staff of the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology (LABANOF) of the University of Milan has been engaged in recovering the skeletons of 36 unknown people from the cemeteries of the city of Milan, to redraw their biological profiles and give them back the possibility of being identified. Of the 36 starting skeletons, 7 have been identified and therefore are not the object of this study, 25 individuals were previously subjected to an autopsy examination and 4 skeletons were studied for the first time in the present work. The post-mortem data of all the individuals who had previously undergone autopsy and had not yet been identified (n = 25) have been retrieved from the archives of the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Milan and allowed for a comparison with those obtained from the new anthropological study of each exhumed skeleton. The authors aim to present the three most interesting cases to better highlight the results that emerged from the comparison. The autopsy information alone lacked important details. In all cases, the anthropological examination proved to be capable of detailing the biological profile of the unknowns even after a long period of inhumation (even more than 20 years). The limitations of instrumental investigations in achieving the goal single-handedly and the importance of recovering the unknown skeletons from cemeteries for identification purposes are discussed.

The Liupan Shan, situated on the southwestern Ordos Basin, underwent Cenozoic uplift caused by the India-Asia collision and subsequent northeastward tectonic movements. The strata in this region record both the paleogeography of the southwestern Ordos Basin and the uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau. However, past studies have rarely analyzed the strata comprehensively, resulting in overlooked information within them. We present the first detrital zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) data from the Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Liupan Shan and the Upper Miocene red clay of Chaona, constraining a maximum burial depth of less than 6-7 km at 60 Ma for the Liupan area. By integrating zircon U-Pb ages, paleocurrent data, and sedimentary facies, we found a primary ZHe age peak (â¼210 Ma) indicating that the Lower Cretaceous deposits were sourced from the Qinling Orogenic Belt, while the red clay was likely originated from the Liupan Shan. Although the Chaona strata are not preserved in the Liupan Shan, our results suggest that the Miocene Chaona section is crucial for understanding the Late Cenozoic uplift of the Liupan Shan. The distinct stratigraphic ages and source areas reflect the complex depositional and tectonic history of the region. Thermal modeling results revealed three stages of tectonic events (Late Cretaceous, Late Paleocene-Early Eocene, and Late Cenozoic), which are linked to plate interaction. Our findings offer new insights into the long-term tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau.

Exhumations are performed in accordance with a court order and are crucial instruments in the investigation of death allegations. When a death is thought to be the result of drug misuse, pharmaceutical overdose, or pesticide poisoning, this process may be used on human remains. However, after a protracted postmortem interval (PMI), it might be difficult to detect the cause of death by looking at an exhumed corpse. The following case report reveals problems associated with postmortem drug concentration changes following exhumation more than two years after death. A 31-year-old man was found dead in a prison cell. Onan inspection of the place, two blister packs, one with a tablet and the other empty, were taken and kept by the police officers. The evening before, the deceased would have taken cetirizine and food supplements consisting of carnitine-creatine tablets. No relevant autopsy findings have been observed. The toxicological analysis was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and was negative for substances of abuse. Proteomic analysis was positive for creatine detection and negative for other drugs (clarithromycin, fenofibrate, and cetirizine). The presented case shows the methods, the findings, and the limitations of toxicological analysis in an exhumation case with a long postmortem interval (PMI).

This paper reports on coastal exhumations performed during 2006-2022, under the framework of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) humanitarian identification programme. CMP archaeologists investigated 217 coastal locations and recovered skeletal remains on 44 occasions. Challenging environmental conditions required a customized exhumation plan, which could be executed swiftly without compromising operational integrity or standards. The author performed a retrospective analysis to propose an optimized strategy, which includes a survey, exhumation, digital documentation, and post-processing components, with the aim of minimizing the effects of adverse environmental conditions. The proposed strategy is based on scientific standards and observations in the field; it can satisfy the needs of a humanitarian or criminal investigation if appropriate measures are taken to uphold legislative and forensic standards. The author also discussed the taphonomic effects of coastal erosion and wave activity in tandem with exhumation recommendations to assist forensic practitioners involved in similar investigations.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions cause fatal neuropathies in farmed and free-ranging cervids. The deposition of prions in natural and humanmade environmental components has been implicated as a major mechanism mediating CWD spread in wild and captive populations. Prions can be deposited in the environment through excreta, tissues, and carcasses from pre-clinical and clinical animals. Furthermore, burial of CWD-positive animals may reduce but not completely mitigate prion spread from carcasses into the surrounding environment. Here, we analyzed exhumed, decaying deer carcasses for the presence of CWD prions. By analyzing tongue tissues through the protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) technique, we were able to identify seven out of 95 exhumed white-tailed deer carcasses as CWD prions carriers. Confirmatory analyses were performed using the real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) technique. In addition, we evaluated the potential contamination of the pens that housed these animals by swabbing feeders and waterers. PMCA analyses of swabs confirmed CWD contamination on farming equipment. This work demonstrates the usefulness of PMCA to detect CWD prions in a variety of contexts, including exhumed/decaying tissues. In addition, this is the first report demonstrating swabbing coupled with PMCA as a method for the detection of prion seeding activity on naturally exposed surfaces. Considering that this study was focused on a single site, further studies should confirm whether prion amplification assays are useful to identify CWD prions not only in animals but also in the environment that contains them. IMPORTANCE Environmental contamination is thought to be a major player in the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal prion disease affecting a wide variety of cervid species. At present, there are no officially approved methods allowing for the detection of prion infectivity in environmental components. Importantly, animal as well as anthropogenic activities are thought to contribute to prion environmental contamination. Here, we detected CWD prions in exhumed white-tailed deer carcasses by using the protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) assay. In addition, we identified CWD prions in feeders used within the infected facility. These results highlight the potential role of PMCA in identifying prion infectivity in a variety of scenarios, ranging from decaying tissues to farming equipment.

New geochronological, petrological and structural data from the Beas-Sutlej area of Himachal Pradesh (India) are used to reconstruct the tectonothermal and exhumation history of this part of the Himalayan orogen. Sm-Nd garnet ages at 40.5 ± 1.3 Ma obtained on a pegmatoid from the inverse metamorphic High Himalayan Crystalline (HHC) in the Malana-Parbati area probably mark local melting during initial decompression. Ongoing exhumation in ductilely deformed leuco-gneiss is constrained by Sm-Nd garnet ages at 29 ± 1 Ma and white mica Rb-Sr ages around 24-20 Ma, while Bt Rb-Sr ages indicate a drop of regional metamorphic temperatures below 300 °C between 15 and 12 Ma. The deep Sutlej gorge exposes medium-grade paragneisses and Proterozoic orthogneisses of the Lesser Himalayan Crystalline (LHC), overthrust by the HHC along the Main Central Thrust (MCT). Mica cooling ages in the HHC are in the range of 14-11 Ma. Above the extruded wedge of the HHC, the Leo Pargil leucogranite and associated dykes intrude the Haimanta Unit (HU) below the weakly metamorphic Palaeo-Mesozoic sediments of the Tethyan Himalayas (TH). The Leo Pargil leucogranite yielded a mean Sm-Nd garnet age of 19 ± 1 Ma and Rb-Sr muscovite and biotite cooling ages between 16.4 and 11.6 Ma. Marked young extrusion of LHC units resulted in differentiated exhumation/cooling of more frontal parts of the orogen. Very young ductile deformation of LHC gneisses near Wangtu is constrained by late-kinematic pegmatite intrusions crosscutting the main mylonitic foliation. Sm-Nd garnet and Rb-Sr muscovite ages of these pegmatites range between 7.9 ± 0.9 and 5.5 ± 0.1 Ma. Published apatite FT ages down to 0.6 Ma also document accelerated diachronous sub-recent exhumation of different parts of the orogen. Together with geochronological data from the literature, the new results demonstrate that the HHC and the HU were deformed by shortening and crustal thickening during the Eohimalayan phase (Late Eocene-Oligocene), followed by a strong thermal overprint and intrusions of granitoids during the Neohimalayan Phase (Early to Middle Miocene). The LHC experienced amphibolite facies metamorphic conditions in the Late Miocene prior to extrusion between the HHC and the very low-grade Lesser Himalayan sediments. In conjunction with climate changes, young tectonic activity in this central part of the Himalayan orogen may have strongly influenced fluvial incision and erosion, and therefore, contributed to the accelerated uplift, as indicated by extensive accumulation of Late Miocene to Early Pleistocene fluviatile-lacustrine sediments in the Zanda basin, the Transhimalayan headwaters of the Sutlej, in Western Tibet.

Forensic anthropology utilises the knowledge gained from the examination of human remains. It is a requirement for forensic medicine residents to have knowledge of forensic anthropology and exhumation. Most of the forensic medicine residents in the Indian sub-continent graduate only with a theoretical knowledge and without a proper practical training of the process involved. We demonstrate how hands-on training would be beneficial.

This article discusses the gap between the Inquest Legislation of Tanzania and the medical practitioner's teaching curriculum which also covers the medico-legal field. The Tanzanian law clearly states that 'any Government medical practitioner' may be given the responsibility of exhumation, provision of post mortem order and then examination of the corpse where there are ample circumstances requiring an inquest to assist police investigation and the Judiciary in determining whether the cause of death was natural. However, the medical training curriculum in Tanzania for many years did not offer any courses of forensic exhumation and identification of human skeletal remains. Therefore, there has been a gap between the legal entities and the curriculum organization of medical practitioner: a condition that leads to medical practitioners failing to fully support the criminal investigation departments and the judicial system. The article highlights the existing gap and its challenges, shortage of experts in the field of forensic science services and provides some suggestions on how to address these challenges where the proposed methods can be applied to both short- and long-term plans.

Carrying out toxicological investigations in biological samples (e.g. hair) collected from extensively decomposed bodies and even more interpretation of subsequently obtained results is challenging, even more in some particular circumstances of death. In order to illustrate these pitfalls, we report the case of the exhumation of a methamphetamine body-packer. Autopsy examination of a 41-year-old man, one year after his burial, revealed the presence of 44 green pellets (7 out of 44 were torn) along all the gastrointestinal tract. A 6-cm long dark hair strand and pellets were sampled for toxicological analyses. Large toxicological screenings were applied to hair and pellets using both LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS. Intact pellets contained around 10 g of methamphetamine (MA) with a purity ranging from 29 to 35 %. Positive hair results were amiodarone (4.12 ng/mg), desethylamiodarone (5.29 ng/mg) and methamphetamine (7.63 ng/mg). Methamphetamine pellets in gastrointestinal tract were consistent with the autopsy conclusion, i.e. fatal intoxication due to in corpore pellet rupture in a body-packer (the victim was initially deemed to have died from heart failure). In the absence of available data in the literature, amiodarone and metabolite presence in hair could putatively be the consequence of a chronic treatment. Methamphetamine hair concentration was similar to those observed in regular consumers. However, interpreting this hair result is challenging due to (i) the possibility of contamination by sweat at the time of death, and (ii) the probable contamination by putrefaction fluids. This latter hypothesis (artifactual contamination during the post-mortem period) is highly supported by high concentration of methamphetamine in decontamination bath, and even more by the absence of the major methamphetamine metabolite (amphetamine) in hair. As a conclusion, in this particular situation, the hair analysis result (presence of MA and concomitant absence of amphetamine) is in agreement with the previously-established cause of death.

In this publication, benzodiazepines, opioids, and further drugs were analyzed in exhumed brain and liver tissue samples in 116 cases (total) after 9.5-16.5 years of burial. Solid phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was applied. Data from literature is listed summarizing the detectability of the presented analytes after a certain time of burial. In our study, 60% of the analyzed benzodiazepines, 100% of the opioids, and 82% of further drugs were detectable. Only the benzodiazepines lorazepam, nitrazepam, flunitrazepam, and its metabolite norflunitrazepam, and the drugs butylscopolamine, metronidazole, and omeprazole were not detectable at all. Percentage of positive findings (total, and separately for brain and liver tissue) and postmortem period are listed for each analyte. Correlation of detectability depending on postmortem period and condition of tissue are presented exemplarily for midazolam. No substantial correlation was observed. Despite a long time of burial, most benzodiazepines, opioids, and further drugs were detectable in the examined tissue samples. Our results may be a good support for future exhumations in which toxicological analyses are relevant.

Subduction interface thermal structure changes drastically within the first few million years of underthrusting (i.e., subduction infancy). Metamorphic soles beneath ophiolites record snapshots of dynamic conditions and mechanical coupling during subduction infancy. Beneath the Samail Ophiolite (Oman), the sole comprises structurally higher high-temperature (HT) and lower low-temperature (LT) units. This inverted metamorphic gradient has been attributed to evolving metamorphic Pressure-Temperature (P-T) conditions during infancy; however, peak P-T and timing of LT sole subduction are poorly constrained. Oman Drilling Project core BT-1B sampled the base of the ophiolite in a location lacking the HT sole. Metasedimentary and meta-mafic samples collected from 104 m of core reveal that the LT sole subducted to similar peak P as HT rocks preserved elsewhere in Oman, but experienced â¼300°C lower peak T. Prograde fabrics record Si-in-phengite and amphibole chemistries consistent with peak P-T of â¼7-10 kbar and â¼450-550°C in the epidote-amphibolite facies. Retrograde fabrics record a transition from near-pervasive ductile to localized brittle strain under greenschist facies conditions. Titanite U-Pb ages (n = 2) constrain timing of peak LT sole subduction to â¼91 Ma (post-dating initial HT sole subduction by â¼12-13 Myr) and dynamic retrogression through â¼90 Ma. Combined with existing geo/thermo-chronology, our results support a model of protracted subduction and accretion while the infant subduction zone experienced multi-phase, slow-fast-slow cooling. Temporal overlap of HT sole cooling (rehydration?) and ophiolite formation suggests that cooling may lead to interface weakening, facilitating upper-plate extension and spreading. The LT sole formed in a rapidly-refrigerating forearc after ophiolite formation and may reflect the transition to self-sustaining subduction.

Medico-legal investigations should be performed on all unnatural (homicide, suicide, or accident), unexpected, and suspicious deaths to evaluate the possibility of homicide and ascertain the exact cause of death. However, in some scenarios, burial takes place before an autopsy can be conducted. In such cases, exhumation is performed, which involves excavating the remains of previously buried or cremated individuals for medico-legal investigations. Although the diatom test is a very useful microbiological approach in concluding death by drowning, its reliability remains controversial. Our study presents the case of a cadaver that was exhumed so that medico-legal investigations could be performed to ascertain the exact cause of death. The cadaver was recovered from water but buried before an autopsy could be performed. Upon exhumation, the greater cornu of hyoid bone was fractured with dislocation of the maxilla and mandible. The femur, sternum and clavicle were sent for diatom testing. The diatoms came out positive in the bones; however, the water sample from the gutter didn't test positive for diatoms. Thus, due to the diatom-negative status of water, diatoms from bones can't be compared with suspected water samples. Since diatoms in bones can arise as a result of contamination too, death cannot be concluded by drowning. Manual strangulation led to the fracture of the hyoid bone. Asphyxia due to throttling was declared the cause of death. Due to the unreliability of the diatom test in certain cases, other tests should be performed in auxiliary to the diatom test to conclude death by drowning.

This paper should serve as support for future exhumations in which an analysis of cardiovascular drugs is issued after over 9 years of burial. Amiodarone, amlodipine, atropine, bisoprolol, cafedrine, clonidine, esmolol, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, lisinopril, nifedipine, nitrendipine, phenprocoumon, torsemide verapamil, and xipamide were determined in liver and brain tissue of over 100 cases in which exhumation was performed after over 9 years of burial. Diagrams, showing the detectability depending on postmortem period as well as condition of tissues, are presented for furosemide.

Toxicology investigation on human's buried dead bodies is a rare and challenging task in the forensic field. As requested by the Judicial Authority, this work aimed to verify testimonial evidence that emerged during a criminal investigation involving multiple murder cases. The statements indicated an improper medical administration of one or more alleged drugs (propofol, morphine, diazepam, and midazolam) which presumably caused the deaths. Since the supposed crimes took place several years before, the task of the present work was to obtain results to support the charges. The analyses involved 18 biological samples taken from four exhumed bodies, three of which were female and one male, each buried in a different date and mode. Each sample was treated with specific purification and extraction techniques (LLE - SPE) after the addition of the deuterated analogs of the searched analytes (propofol-d17, morphine-d3, diazepam-d5, midazolam-d4) as internal standards. Afterwards, the extracts were subjected to qualitative analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-Electron Impact (GC/MS - EI), both in full scan and SIM mode. Propofol, morphine, and diazepam were identified in the corpses. It supports testimonials that were administered just before the deaths occurred.

Despite the large research effort on reporting quantities of coastal litter, the dynamics of this litter is not yet sufficiently understood. Litter inputs in five cobble beaches located in the Mediterranean (Spain) were studied over three months during winter by biweekly litter tagging. Plastic represented the dominant material that reached the beaches (77%). In remote and narrow beaches, storms constituted the main driver in litter dynamics, favouring the accumulation of floating items such as plastic bottles and wood fragments as well as the largest but contrasting effects, increasing litter inputs and outputs from the beach, respectively. In rural beaches, beach users, mainly fisher people, but also tourists, contributed to a notable input of litter to the beach. Burial and exhumation of litter were reported as common occurring processes. Better management actions are required to improve beach environmental quality.
