RESUMO

Bioremediation of PAHs-contaminated soil by immobilized enzymes is a promising technology. Nevertheless, the practical implementation of highly efficient enzymatic remediation remains confined to laboratory settings, with limited experience in full-scale applications. In this study, the extracellular enzymes from white rot fungi are fully applied to treat sites contaminated with PAHs by combining a new hydrogel microenvironment and a biopiling system. The full-scale project was conducted on silty loam soil contaminated with PAHs. In line with China's guidelines for construction land, 7 out of the 12 PAHs identified are considered to be a threat to the soil quality of construction sites, with benzo[a]pyrene levels reaching 1.50 mg kg-1, surpassing the acceptable limit of 0.55 mg kg-1 for the first type of land. After 7 days of remediation, the benzo[a]pyrene level decreased from 1.50 mg kg-1 to 0.51 mg kg-1, reaching the remediation standard of Class I screening values, with a removal rate of 66%. Microbiomes were utilized to assess the microbial biodiversity and structure analyses for PAHs biodegradation. The remediation enhanced the abundance of dominant bacterium (Marinobacter, Pseudomonas, and Truepera) and fugin (Thielavia, Neocosmospora, and Scedosporium). The research offers further insights into the exploration of soil remediation on the full-scale of the immobilized enzyme and biopiling technology.

Composting is a nature-based method used to stabilize organic matter and to transform nitrogen from animal farm manure or solid fraction of slurry (SFS). The use of composted material as source of nutrients for agriculture is limited by its potential to facilitate the propagation of biological hazards like pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their associated antibiotic-resistance genes (ARG). We show here an experimental on-farm composting (one single batch) of pig SFS, performed under realistic conditions (under dry continental Mediterranean climate) for 280 days, and using two different bulking agents (maize straw and tree pruning residues) for the initial mixtures. The observed reduction in potentially pathogenic bacteria (80-90%) and of ARG loads (60-100%) appeared to be linked to variations in the microbiome composition occurring during the first 4 months of composting, and concurrent with the reduction of water-soluble ammonium and organic matter loads. Nitrification during the composting has also been observed for both composting piles. Similar patterns have been demonstrated at small scale and the present study stresses the fact that the removal can also occur at full scale. The results suggest that adequate composition of the starting material may accelerate the composting process and improve its global performance. While the results confirm the sanitization potential of composting, they also issue a warning to limit ARG loads in soils and in animal and human gut microbiomes, as the only way to limit their presence in foodstuffs and, therefore, to reduce consumers' exposure.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and conventional activated sludge (CAS) are two different biological wastewater treatment processes. AGS consists of self-immobilised microorganisms that are transformed into spherical biofilms, whereas CAS has floccular sludge of lower density. In this study, we investigated the treatment performance and microbiome dynamics of two full-scale AGS reactors and a parallel CAS system at a municipal WWTP in Sweden. Both systems produced low effluent concentrations, with some fluctuations in phosphate and nitrate mainly due to variations in organic substrate availability. The microbial diversity was slightly higher in the AGS, with different dynamics in the microbiome over time. Seasonal periodicity was observed in both sludge types, with a larger shift in the CAS microbiome compared to the AGS. Groups important for reactor function, such as ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB), polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs), followed similar trends in both systems, with higher relative abundances of PAOs and GAOs in the AGS. However, microbial composition and dynamics differed between the two systems at the genus level. For instance, among PAOs, Tetrasphaera was more prevalent in the AGS, while Dechloromonas was more common in the CAS. Among NOB, Ca. Nitrotoga had a higher relative abundance in the AGS, while Nitrospira was the main nitrifier in the CAS. Furthermore, network analysis revealed the clustering of the various genera within the guilds to modules with different temporal patterns, suggesting functional redundancy in both AGS and CAS. KEY POINTS: • Microbial community succession in parallel full-scale aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and conventional activated sludge (CAS) processes. • Higher periodicity in microbial community structure in CAS compared to in AGS. • Similar functional groups between AGS and CAS but different composition and dynamics at genus level.

As the imbalance between power demand and load capacity in electrical systems becomes increasingly severe, investigating the temperature variations in transformers under different load stresses is crucial for ensuring their safe operation. The thermal analysis of converter transformers poses challenges due to the complexity of model construction. This paper develops a full-scale model of a converter transformer using a multi-core high-performance computer and explores its thermal state at 80%, 100%, and 120% loading ratios using the COUPLED iteration method. Additionally, to validate the simulation model, 24 FBGs are installed in the experimental transformer to record the temperature data. The results indicate a general upward trend in winding the temperature from bottom to top. However, an internal temperature rise followed by a decrease is observed within certain sections. Moreover, as the loading ratio increases, both the peak temperature and temperature differential of the transformer windings rise, reaching a peak temperature of 107.9 °C at a 120% loading ratio. The maximum discrepancy between the simulation and experimental results does not exceed 3.5%, providing effective guidance for the transformer design and operational maintenance.

Digestate processing is a strategy to improve the management of digestate from biogas plants. Solid-liquid separation is usually the primary step and can be followed by advanced treatments of the fractions. The knowledge about the performance of the separators and the quality of the fractions is scattered because of many available techniques and large variability in digestate characteristics. We performed a systematic review and found 175 observations of full-scale solid-liquid separation of digestate. We identified 4 separator groups, 4 digestate classes based on substrate, and distinguished whether chemical conditioners were used. We confirmed the hypothesis that the dominant substrate can affect the efficiency of the digestate separation. Furthermore, the results showed that centrifuges separated significantly more dry matter and total P than screw presses. Use of chemical conditioners in combination with a centrifuge lowered the dry matter concentration in the liquid fraction by 30%. Screw presses consumed 4.5 times less energy than centrifuges and delivered 3.3 tonne ammonium N in the liquid fraction and 0.3 tonne total P in the solid fraction using 1 MWh. The results can provide data for systems analyses of biogas solutions and can support practitioners when choosing among full-scale separator techniques depending on the digestate type. In a broader perspective, this work contributes to the continuous improvement of biogas plants operations and to their role as nutrients recovery sites.

The algal-bacterial shortcut nitrogen removal (ABSNR) process can be used to treat high ammonia strength wastewaters without external aeration. However, prior algal-bacterial SNR studies have been conducted under fixed light/dark periods that were not representative of natural light conditions. In this study, laboratory-scale photo-sequencing batch reactors (PSBRs) were used to treat anaerobic digester sidestream under varying light intensities that mimicked summer and winter conditions in Tampa, FL, USA. A dynamic mathematical model was developed for the ABSNR process, which was calibrated and validated using data sets from the laboratory PSBRs. The model elucidated the dynamics of algal and bacterial biomass growth under natural illumination conditions as well as transformation processes for nitrogen species, oxygen, organic and inorganic carbon. A full-scale PSBR with a 1.2 m depth, a 6-day hydraulic retention time (HRT) and a 10-day solids retention time (SRT) was simulated for treatment of anaerobic digester sidestream. The full-scale PSBR could achieve >90% ammonia removal, significantly reducing the nitrogen load to the mainstream wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The dynamic simulation showed that ABSNR process can help wastewater treatment facilities meet stringent nitrogen removal standards with low energy inputs.

It is particularly important to comprehensively assess the biotoxicity variation of industrial wastewater along the treatment process for ensuring the water environment security. However, intensive studies on the biotoxicity reduction of industrial wastewater are still limited. In this study, the toxic organics removal and biotoxicity reduction of coal chemical wastewater (CCW) along a novel full-scale treatment process based on the pretreatment process-anaerobic process-biological enhanced (BE) process-anoxic/oxic (A/O) process-advanced treatment process was evaluated. This process performed great removal efficiency of COD, total phenol, NH4+-N and total nitrogen. And the biotoxicity variation along the treatment units was analyzed from the perspective of acute biotoxicity, genotixicity and oxidative damage. The results indicated that the effluent of pretreatment process presented relatively high acute biotoxicity to Tetrahymena thermophila. But the acute biotoxicity was significantly reduced in BE-A/O process. And the genotoxicity and oxidative damage to Tetrahymena thermophila were significantly decreased after advanced treatment. The polar organics in CCW were identified as the main biotoxicity contributors. Phenols were positively correlated with acute biotoxicity, while the nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were positively correlated with genotoxicity. Although the biotoxicity was effectively reduced in the novel full-scale treatment process, the effluent still performed potential biotoxicity, which need to be further explored in order to reduce environmental risk.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcomes at 5.5 years of age in children who were previously randomized to cow milk-based infant formula (control) or similar formula (milk fat globule membrane + lactoferrin) with added sources of bovine milk fat globule membrane and bovine lactoferrin through 12 months of age. DESIGN: Children who completed study feeding were invited to participate in follow-up assessments: cognitive development across multiple domains (primary outcome; Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence, 4th Edition), inhibitory control/rule learning (Stroop Task), flexibility/rule learning (Dimensional Change Card Sort), and behavior/emotion (Child Behavior Checklist). RESULTS: Of 292 eligible participants (control: 148, milk fat globule membrane + lactoferrin: 144), 116 enrolled and completed assessments (control: 59, milk fat globule membrane + LF: 57). There were no group demographic differences except family income (milk fat globule membrane + lactoferrin significantly higher). Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence, 4th Edition composite scores (mean ± standard error) for Visual Spatial (100.6 ± 1.7 vs 95.3 ± 1.7; P = .027), Processing Speed (107.1 ± 1.4 vs 100.0 ± 1.4; P < .001), and Full-Scale IQ (98.7 ± 1.4 vs 93.5 ± 1.5; P = .012) were significantly higher for milk fat globule membrane + lactoferrin versus control, even after controlling for demographic/socioeconomic factors. Stroop Task scores were significantly higher in milk fat globule membrane + lactoferrin versus control (P < .001). Higher Dimensional Change Card Sort scores (P = .013) in the border phase (most complex/challenging) were detected, and more children passed the border phase (32% vs 12%; P = .039) for milk fat globule membrane versus control. No group differences in Child Behavior Checklist score were detected. CONCLUSIONS: Children who received infant formula to 12 months of age with added bovine milk fat globule membrane and bovine lactoferrin versus standard formula demonstrated improved cognitive outcomes in multiple domains at 5.5 years of age, including measures of intelligence and executive function. The most critical period for brain development is before a child's second birthday. Standardised tests measuring neurodevelopment are more reliable when administered after this period. Severe vitamin B12 deficiency affects brain development and function. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 600 Nepalese infants (6-11 months at enrolment), we found no effect of 2 µg vitamin B12 daily for a year on neurodevelopment. The primary objective of the current study was to measure the effect of the intervention on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-IV) full scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ). We measured the effect on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development 3rd edition at age 30-35 months (n 555). At age 42-47 months (n 533), we used the WPPSI-IV and subtests from the Neuropsychological Assessment, 2nd edition (NEPSY-II). We also used the FSIQ to estimate subgroup specific effects. The mean (sd) WPPSI-IV FSIQ in the vitamin B12 group was 84·4 (8·4) and 85·0 (8·6) in the placebo group (mean difference -0·5 (95 % CI -1·97, 0·94), P = 0·48). There were no effect of the vitamin B12 on any of the other neurodevelopmental outcomes and no beneficial effect in any of the subgroups. In conclusion, providing 2 µg of vitamin B12 for a year in infants at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency does not improve preschool cognitive function.

Ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOMs) include ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), archaea (AOA), and Nitrospira spp. sublineage II capable of complete ammonia oxidation (comammox). These organisms can affect water quality not only by oxidizing ammonia to nitrite (or nitrate) but also by cometabolically degrading trace organic contaminants. In this study, the abundance and composition of AOM communities were investigated in full-scale biofilters at 14 facilities across North America and in pilot-scale biofilters operated for 18 months at a full-scale water treatment plant. In general, the relative abundance of AOM in most full-scale biofilters and in the pilot-scale biofilters was as follows: AOB > comammox Nitrospira > AOA. The abundance of AOB in the pilot-scale biofilters increased with increasing influent ammonia concentration and decreasing temperature, whereas AOA and comammox Nitrospira exhibited no correlations with these parameters. The biofilters affected AOM abundance in the water passing through the filters via collecting and shedding but exhibited a minor influence on the composition of AOB and Nitrospira sublineage II communities in the filtrate. Overall, this study highlights the relative importance of AOB and comammox Nitrospira compared to AOA in biofilters and the influence of filter influent water quality on AOM in biofilters and their release into the filtrate.

The performance of full-scale biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) depends on the operational and environmental conditions of treatment systems. However, we do not know how much these conditions affect microbial community structures and dynamics across systems over time and predictability of the treatment performance. For over a year, the microbial communities of four full-scale WWTPs processing textile wastewater were monitored. During temporal succession, the environmental conditions and system treatment performance were the main drivers, which explained up to 51% of community variations within and between all plants based on the multiple regression models. We identified the universality of community dynamics in all systems using the dissimilarity-overlap curve method, with the significant negative slopes suggesting that the communities containing the same taxa from different plants over time exhibited a similar composition dynamic. The Hubbell neutral theory and the covariance neutrality test indicated that all systems had a dominant niche-based assembly mechanism, supporting that the communities had a similar composition dynamic. Phylogenetically diverse biomarkers for the system conditions and treatment performance were identified by machine learning. Most of the biomarkers (83%) were classified as generalist taxa, and the phylogenetically related biomarkers responded similarly to the system conditions. Many biomarkers for treatment performance perform functions that are crucial for wastewater treatment processes (e.g., carbon and nutrient removal). This study clarifies the relationships between community composition and environmental conditions in full-scale WWTPs over time.

The aim of the study was to explore the molecular dynamics and transformation pathways of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sewage sludge (SS) during composting, and the DOM of raw material, material experiencing thermophilic phase and material collected from humification phase were characterized using electrospray ionization coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The results indicated that there were approximately 85% of aliphatic/proteins and 75% of carbohydrate preferentially decomposed in the thermophilic phase. Moreover, lignins/carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM) were the main N-containing substances evolved in the decomposition, which leading to a reduction of N/C ratio from 0.073 to 0.041. Whereas aliphatic acids and tryptophan in lignins/CRAM with high oxidizing capacities are preferentially decomposed in the thermophilic phase. As for maturity phase, the carbon of the newly generated compounds (belonging to lignins/CRAM and tannins), possessed an oxidation state that similar to sulfonates and sulfonamides, and these DOM are beneficial for the humic substances formation. Moreover, it was found that the newly formed N2Ox and N3Ox compounds had a more significant contribution to the double bond equivalent (DBE) of the compost, corresponding to 1.0 and 1.7 DBE, respectively. The results would help explore the understanding of DOM transformation and humification during SS composting in the microscopic molecular level.

In recent years, Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBRs) have been preferred to conventional processes with suspended biomass. The main reason for this preference is that it can achieve better removal efficiencies than conventional systems with smaller footprints. However, unlocking the full potential of MBBRs in large-scale WWTPs remains challenging in real life. In this study, the performance of three different treatment technologies, Extended Aeration Activated Sludge (EAAS), Hybrid Fixed Bed Biofilm Reactor (HFBBR), and Hybrid Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (HMBBR), was investigated over a year in a WWTP located in El-Gouna, Egypt. The COD removal efficiencies of the three systems were comparable, with the EAAS achieving 93.5%, HFBBR 94%, and HMBRR 95%. Nevertheless, the NH4 removal efficiency of the EAAS was slightly lower (97.5%) than that of the HFBBR and the HMBBR, that achieved a removal efficiency of 98%. BioWin Software was able to mimic the real case of the WWTP of El-Gouna and critically defined all plant limitations and operational data. Different simulations were modeled to test the hydraulic and organic loading capacities of the three systems under different scenarios and operating conditions. The HMBBR system failed to withstand the increase in organic load because of the biomass sloughing effect and subsequently high TSS loads in the settlers. Biomass sloughing overloaded the settlers and lead to biomass loss in the effluent. As the settleability of the HMBBR sludge was significantly lower than for the HFBBR the TSS loss in the effluent happened that much earlier that the moving carrier application had an adverse effect contradicting with the primary purpose of adding media carriers. Model simulations and data analysis findings were used to recommend the most suitable configuration for upgrading an existing system using the attached growth technique with all kinetic parameters and operational conditions. The recommended configuration focuses mainly on the separation of plastic media in a compartment with a very low hydraulic retention time to absorb the incoming shock load.

BACKGROUND: The embedded participant (EP) plays a key role during a full scale/high-fidelity simulation (HFS) session. He/she is expected to guide the learner towards the achievement of the educational objectives of the scenario. However, his/her influence on learners' performance stands undetermined and this effect remains briefly addressed in the literature. This study primarily aims to assess whether the EP could have an influence on the performance of the learner during a HFS scenario. The secondary aim was to establish an inventory of the EP practices in France. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in Lyon Claude Bernard University Health Simulation Centre (France). Anaesthesia and critical care residents in postgraduate years 1 to 5 who were scheduled for their HFS sessions during the 2016 to 2021 academic years were included. Two investigators independently evaluated the resident performance regarding both technical and non-technical skills from video recordings. In addition, a nationwide survey was sent out by email through the networks of the Francophone Healthcare Simulation Society (SoFraSimS, Société Francophone de Simulation en Santé) to collect information on EP practices in French-speaking Simulation centres. RESULTS: From a total of 344 HFS videos analysed, a cohort of 19 experienced EPs was identified. The EPs had an influence on the technical and non-technical performances of the learners. The 147 responses to the survey showed that predefined rules of EP good practice existed in only 36% of the simulation centres and 65% of respondents believed that specific EP training would be justified. CONCLUSION: The EP can exert an influence on the performance of the learners during HFS. For acting as an EP, a great variability of practices and a lack of training are reported by professionals working in simulation centres. These results suggest that more attention must be paid to EP training and attitudes during simulation, especially if summative simulations are extensively developed.

Digital image correlation (DIC) is an optical technique used to measure surface displacements and strains in materials and structures. This technique has demonstrated significant utility in structural examination and monitoring. This manuscript offers a comprehensive review of the contemporary research and applications that have leveraged the DIC technique in laboratory-based structural tests. The reviewed works encompass a broad spectrum of structural components, such as concrete beams, columns, pillars, masonry walls, infills, composite materials, structural joints, steel beams, slabs, and other structural elements. These investigations have underscored the efficacy of DIC as a metrological instrument for the precise quantification of surface deformation and strain in these structural components. Moreover, the constraints of the DIC technique have been highlighted, especially in scenarios involving extensive or complex test configurations. Notwithstanding these constraints, the effectiveness of the DIC methodology has been validated as a strain measurement instrument, offering numerous benefits such as non-invasive operation, full-field measurement capability, high precision, real-time surveillance, and compatibility with integration into other measurement instruments and methodologies.

RESUMO

Considering that landfilling still remains among the most commonly used methods for the confrontation of solid wastes, effective methods should be applied to treat the leachate generated, due to its recalcitrant nature. In this work, a full-scale system consisting of two SBRs operating in parallel (350 m3 each) and two activated carbon (AC) columns operating in series (3 m3 each) was retrofitted by introducing a coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation (C/F/S) unit of 7.8 m3 and an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane of 100 m2 to effectively treat landfill leachate. The raw leachate was characterized by high COD and NH4+-N concentration, i.e., 3095 ± 706 mg/L and 1054 ± 141 mg/L respectively, a BOD/COD ratio of 0.22, and high concentrations of certain heavy metals. Leachate processing in this retrofitted multistage treatment system resulted in total COD removal efficiency of 89.84%, with biological treatment, C/F, UF, and AC contributing 46.31%, 4.68%, 15.98%, and 22.87% to the overall organic content removal. The retrofitted scheme achieved an overall NH4+-N and TKN removal of 92.03% and 91.75% respectively, attributed mostly to the activity of an effective nitrifying community. Color number (CN) was reduced by 26.96%, 10.29%, 15.94%, and 5.39% after the activated sludge, the C/F, the UF, and the AC adsorption process respectively, corresponding to a 58.91% overall decrease. Regarding heavy metal removal, all elements examined, apart from Ni, i.e., effluent As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mg, Mn, and Pb, were below the legislative limits set by the national authorities for restricted or unrestricted irrigation. Lastly, total operating expenses (OPEX) were estimated as equal to 72,687 €/year or 6.64 €/m3.

The effect of combined antibiotics exposure on nitrogen removal, microbial community assembly and proliferation of antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) is a hotspot in activated sludge system. However, it is unclear that how the historical antibiotic stress affects the subsequent responses of microbes and ARGs to combined antibiotics. In this study, the effects of combined sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) pollution on activated sludge under legacy of SMX or TMP stress with different doses (0.005-30 mg/L) were investigated to clarify antibiotic legacy effects. Nitrification activity was inhibited under higher level of combined exposure but a high total nitrogen removal (∼70%) occurred. Based on the full-scale classification, the legacy effect of past antibiotic stress had a marked effect on community composition of conditionally abundant taxa (CAT) and conditionally rare or abundant taxa (CRAT). Rare taxa (RT) were the keystone taxa in the microbial network, and the responses of hub genera were also affected by the legacy of antibiotic stress. Nitrifying bacteria and genes were inhibited by the antibiotics and aerobic denitrifying bacteria (Pseudomonas, Thaurea and Hydrogenophaga) were enriched under legacy of high dose, as were the key denitrifying genes (napA, nirK and norB). Furthermore, the occurrences and co-selection relationship of 94 ARGs were affected by legacy effect. While, some shared hosts (eg., Citrobacter) and hub ARGs (eg., mdtD, mdtE and acrD) were identified. Overall, antibiotic legacy could affect responses of activated sludge to combined antibiotic and the legacy effect was stronger at higher exposure levels.

Process monitoring is an essential measure to achieve efficient and stable performance in anaerobic digestion, thus requiring identification of effective early warning indicators. However, the application of early warning indicators to full-scale dry anaerobic engineering biogas plant still remains elusive. This study evaluated the effectiveness of common early warning indicators (including CH4, CO2, H2S, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), alkalinity (ALK), total ammonia concentration (TAN) and free ammonia concentration (FAN)) in monitoring the instability of anaerobic digestion process at a practical engineering plant. The results showed that the individual indicators could not provide a sufficient early warning time before the digester fell into failure collapse. In comparison, the coupling indicators (the ratio of CH4/CO2, CH4/pH, and CH4/H2S) had sensitive response to perturbation, which could regard as a potential early warning indicator, with the early warning time of 6, 7 and 10 days, respectively. Moreover, the VFA/ALK could be used as auxiliary indicators due to the limitation of complex detection methods. In addition, the result also indicated that the application of some warning indicators needs to be further verified, when transferring the result of laboratory scale to the practice application scenarios. This study provides insight into the stable operation of dry anaerobic engineering.

In biodesulfurization (BD) at haloalkaline and dO2-limited conditions, sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) effectively convert sulfide into elemental sulfur that can be used in agriculture as a fertilizer and fungicide. Here we show which bacteria are present in this biotechnological process. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of biomass from ten reactors sampled in 2018 indicated the presence of 444 bacterial Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs). A core microbiome represented by 30 ASVs was found in all ten reactors, with Thioalkalivibrio sulfidiphilus as the most dominant species. The majority of these ASVs are phylogenetically related to bacteria previously identified in haloalkaline BD processes and in natural haloalkaline ecosystems. The source and composition of the feed gas had a great impact on the microbial community composition followed by alkalinity, sulfate, and thiosulfate concentrations. The halophilic SOB of the genus Guyparkeria (formerly known as Halothiobacillus) and heterotrophic SOB of the genus Halomonas were identified as potential indicator organisms of sulfate and thiosulfate accumulation in the BD process. BACKGROUND: For the encoding part of U-Net3+,the ability of brain tumor feature extraction is insufficient, as a result, the features can not be fused well during up-sampling, and the accuracy of segmentation will reduce. METHODS: In this study, we put forward an improved U-Net3+ segmentation network based on stage residual. In the encoder part, the encoder based on the stage residual structure is used to solve the vanishing gradient problem caused by the increasing in network depth, and enhances the feature extraction ability of the encoder which is instrumental in full feature fusion when up-sampling in the network. What's more, we replaced batch normalization (BN) layer with filter response normalization (FRN) layer to eliminate batch size impact on the network. Based on the improved U-Net3+ two-dimensional (2D) model with stage residual, IResUnet3+ three-dimensional (3D) model is constructed. We propose appropriate methods to deal with 3D data, which achieve accurate segmentation of the 3D network. RESULTS: The experimental results showed that: the sensitivity of WT, TC, and ET increased by 1.34%, 4.6%, and 8.44%, respectively. And the Dice coefficients of ET and WT were further increased by 3.43% and 1.03%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The improved network has a significant improvement in the segmentation task of the brain tumor BraTS2018 dataset, compared with the classical networks u-net, v-net, resunet and u-net3+, the proposed network has smaller parameters and significantly improved accuracy.
