PURPOSE: Tonsillectomy is a common surgery performed for indications such as chronic tonsilitis, tonsil hypertrophy and obsructive sleep apnea. Although posttonsillectomy bleeding (PTB) is rare and can be controlled with simple interventions in many patients, it is one of the most feared complications of tonsillectomy surgery. In our study, we investigated the effects of changes in hemogram and coagulation values and seasonal effects on PTB. METHODS: Pediatric and adult patients who underwent tonsillectomy with cold knife method between August 2020 and August 2023 in our clinic were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data, hemogram and coagulation values of the patients in the control and study groups were recorded and the differences between the two groups in terms of these parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: Our study included 991 patients aged 1-51 years. The rate of PTB was calculated as 2.82%. No patient with primary PTB was found. The duration of bleeding development was 7.03 days. Age, WBC and neutrophil values were statistically significantly higher in the study group. There were no significant differences between two groups in terms of gender, season and other hemogram and coagulation parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Age, high WBC and neutrophil levels were determined as possible risk factors for PTB. Seasonal and gender distribution, aPTT and INR values were similar in the two groups. In order to prevent and predict bleeding, detailed infection investigation should be performed and the risk of bleeding should be considered to increase with increasing age.

Monocytes and neutrophils play key roles in the cytokine storm triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection, which changes their conformation and function. These changes are detectable at the cellular and molecular level and may be different to what is observed in other respiratory infections. Here, we applied machine learning (ML) to develop and validate an algorithm to diagnose COVID-19 using blood parameters. In this retrospective single-center study, 49 hemogram parameters from 12,321 patients with clinical suspicion of COVID-19 and tested by RT-PCR (4239 positive and 8082 negative) were analysed. The dataset was randomly divided into training and validation sets. Blood cell parameters and patient age were used to construct the predictive model with the support vector machine (SVM) tool. The model constructed from the training set (5936 patients) achieved an accuracy for diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection of 0.952 (95% CI: 0.875-0.892). Test sensitivity and specificity was 0.868 and 0.899, respectively, with a positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive value of 0.896 and 0.872, respectively (prevalence 0.50). The validation set model (4964 patients) achieved an accuracy of 0.894 (95% CI: 0.883-0.903). Test sensitivity and specificity was 0.8922 and 0.8951, respectively, with a positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive value of 0.817 and 0.94, respectively (prevalence 0.34). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.952 for the algorithm performance. This algorithm may allow to rule out COVID-19 diagnosis with 94% of probability. This represents a great advance for early diagnostic orientation and guiding clinical decisions.

H3N2 and Omicron are common pathogens of respiratory infections in children. This study aimed to explore dynamic changes of lymphocyte subsets and the diagnostic value of CD19+ B cell in children infected with influenza A and Omicron. One hundred and sixty-five in-patients with H3N2, 175 in-patients with Omicron variant, and 50 age-matched healthy children from Children's Hospital of Soochow University were included in this study. The participants underwent 13 respiratory pathogens by DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sputum culture, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) DNA PCR, routine blood, and lymphocyte subset assays within 24 h of admission. The neutrophils, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio in the H3N2 and Omicron groups were significantly higher than in the control groups (p < 0.05). However, the lymphocytes and eosinophils in the H3N2 and Omicron groups were lower than the control groups (p < 0.05). The CD3+ T cell, CD3+ CD4+ T cell, CD3+ CD8+ T cell, CD3- CD19+ B cell, and natural killer cell were lower in the H3N2 and Omicron groups than in the control group (p < 0.05). The CD3- CD19+ cell in the Omicron group was higher than that in the H3N2 group but lower than that in the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, CD3- CD19+ cell had good diagnostic value for H3N2 (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.902, p < 0.05). The children with H3N2 were more likely to have lower lymphocytes than children with Omicron. Additionally, B-cell count had good diagnostic value for H3N2.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of blood parameters in captive non-human primates (NHPs) is crucial for monitoring their health and ensuring that their environment meets their physiological requirements. METHODS: We performed hemogram, serum biochemistry, and parasitological exams in 20 howler monkeys and 21 capuchin monkeys. RESULTS: In both species, over 50% of the individuals presented at least one parasite. There was a negative effect of age on red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell, platelets, total protein, globulin, and alkaline phosphatase, and a positive effect on the A:G ratio, gamma-glutamyl transferase, and mean platelet volume (MPV). Capuchin monkeys presented the highest platelets and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) values and howler monkeys presented the highest MPV, aspartate aminotransferase, ALT, amylase, glucose, bilirubin, and triglycerides values. We observed an interaction between species and sex on RBC, Htc, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS: Species differences found in blood parameters may reflect differences in physiological adaptations associated with ecological and morphological traits and are clinically relevant for evaluating animal health and the suitability of breeding programs.

Hematological traits are important indicators of health status, and they are frequently used as criteria for clinical diagnosis. In humans, the genomic architecture of blood traits has been investigated in depth and thousands of associations with genetic variants have been found. In contrast, the association between marker genotypes and the variation of hematological traits has not been investigated in goats yet. Herewith, we have recorded 12 hematological parameters in 882 Murciano-Granadina goats that were also genotyped with the Goat SNP50 BeadChip (Illumina). Performance of a univariate genome-wide association study (GWAS) made it possible to detect one genomic region on goat chromosome (CHI) 21 (19.2-19.5 Mb) associated, at the genome-wide level of significance, with 4 red blood cell traits. The three markers displaying the highest significances were rs268272996 (CHI21: 19225290 bp), rs268273004 (CHI21: 19565629 bp) and rs268239059 (CHI13: 9615190 bp). Consistently, a multivariate GWAS indicated that the rs268273004 marker on chromosome 21 is associated with seven blood cell traits. Interestingly, this marker maps close to the FA Complementation Group I (FANCI) gene (CHI21: 20021947-20077025 bp), which is functionally related to Fanconi anemia, a syndrome characterized by bone marrow failure, aplastic anemia, and congenital disorders. We have also uncovered additional chromosome-wide significant associations between genetic markers and erythrocyte and leukocyte traits in the univariate GWAS. These findings evidence that the phenotypic variation of hematological traits in goats is regulated, at least to some extent, by polygenic determinants distributed in multiple chromosomes.

Background and Objectives: It is crucial to quickly identify those patients who need immediate treatment in order to avoid the various complications related to acute diverticulitis (AD). Although several studies evaluated the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) suggesting its predictive value in assessing the severity of AD, results have been inconclusive. Therefore, we aimed to assess the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and systemic immune inflammation (SII) with the severity of AD, the ability to predict the presence or absence of complications, and the recurrence rate, based on the values of inflammatory markers. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 147 patients diagnosed with AD between January 2012 to February 2023. Patients were divided into 2 groups, uncomplicated and complicated AD. The characteristics and full blood count between both groups were compared. Results: A total of 65 (44.22%) patients were classified as having complicated AD. The area under the ROC curve (AUROC) defining a Hinchey score ≥ 1b was as follows: SII, 0.812 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.73 -0.888); NLR, 0.773 (95% CI, 0.676-0.857); PLR, 0.725 (95% CI, 0.63-0.813); MLR: 0.665 (95% CI, 0.542 -0.777). An SII cutoff value of > 1200 marked the highest yield for diagnosing complicated AD, with a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 76%. The cumulative recurrence rate was not significantly different in the groups of SII ≥ median vs. SII < median (p = 0.35), NLR ≥ median vs. NLR < median (p = 0.347), PLR ≥ median vs. PLR < median (p = 0.597), and MLR ≥ median vs. MLR < median (p = 0.651). Conclusions: Our study indicates that SII, NLR, and PLR are statistically significant and clinically useful classifying ratios to predict higher Hinchey scores. However, they cannot predict recurrences.

Background: Inflammation biomarkers known as acute phase reactants (APRs) show significant variations in serum concentrations during inflammation brought on by both viral and noninfectious diseases. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), the C-reactive protein (CRP), the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), the ferritin, the fibrinogen, the procalcitonin, the D-dimer, and the troponin I are all significant APRs. During inflammation, the serum levels of each of these positive APRs rise. The sensitivity and specificity of hematologic parameters and indices are as high as the inflammatory biomarkers mentioned above for monitoring disease severity and treatment response. Aim: We aimed to evaluate the differences in hematological parameters and indices, and to reveal their treatment and prognostic values, especially in deceased patients with COVID-19. Materials and Methods: The hemogram parameters of 169 critical patients with COVID-19 (125 males and 44 females) who received inpatient treatment at ….between 1 March 2020 and 31 December 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups-deceased (77) and surviving (92)-noting demographic data such as age and gender. All analyses were performed using SPSS 25.0. Results: Analyses of the hematological parameters used during the treatment processes revealed statistically significant differences between the two patient groups. White blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) values were significantly higher (P = 0.019, P = 0.000 and P = 0.000, respectively) for deceased subjects, while lymphocyte, platelet and plateletcrit (PCT) values were significantly lower (for all values, P = 0.000). Platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), as well as MPV/PLT, PDW/PLT, MPV/PCT, and PDW/PCT, levels were significantly higher in deceased subjects (P = 0.000). Particularly in our deceased cases, receiver operating characteristic analyses were performed to reveal the importance of such analyses in prognostic status evaluation in COVID-19 since the hematological parameters are quite different. Cut-off values were determined for each parameter, and sensitivity and specificity ratios were calculated. While the sensitivities of MPV/PLT, PDW/PLT, MPV/PCT, and PDW/PCT indices are over 80%, neutrophil and white blood cell sensitivities were found to be lower (74%, 68.8%, respectively). Conclusion: In addition to NLR, which is an important biomarker, the hematological indices MPV/PLT, PDW/PLT, MPV/PCT, and PDW/PCT can be used to determine the risk of death in patients with severe COVID-19.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a life-threatening hyperinflammation syndrome emerging after COVID-19. The serum delta neutrophil index (DNI) reflects the fraction of circulating immature granulocytes and is evaluated in infection and inflammation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of DNI as a diagnostic marker in patients with MIS-C and to assess its role in determining the severity of MIS-C. This retrospective, observational study included 83 patients with MIS-C and 113 patients with COVID-19, and 102 healthy controls. C-reactive protein (CRP), the absolute neutrophil count (ANC), absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), DNI, and the platelet count were recorded. The DNI levels were 4.60 ± 5.70% in the MIS C group, 0.30 ± 0.99% in the COVID group, and 0.20 ± 0.56% in the control group (p < 0.001). According to the severity of MIS-C, the DNI level was found to be 1.22% in mild MIS-C, 4.3% in moderate MIS-C, and 5.7% in severe MIS-C. There was a statistically significant correlation between DNI levels and the severity of MIS-C. The cutoff value of DNI for predicting MIS-C was 0.45%. In the analysis of the diagnostic performance of DNI compared with CRP, ANC, ALC and platelet counts, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were found to be 79.5%, 97.1%, 95.7%, and 85.3%, respectively.Conclusions: The delta neutrophil index was identified as a diagnostic marker for MIS-C such as ANC, ALC, platelet count, and CRP. DNI levels in hemogram analysis may guide clinicians in determining the diagnosis and severity of MIS-C. What is Known: • Although CRP, sedimentation, ALC, ANC, platelet count, sodium, and albumin are used as first step tests, there is no specific laboratory marker used in the diagnosis of MIS C. • The serum delta neutrophil index (DNI) reflects the fraction of circulating immature granulocytes and is elevated in infection and inflammation. What is New: • DNI is a promising and easily accessible marker that can be used with other markers in the diagnosis and determines the severity of MIS C. • DNI is an easily accessible, inexpensive, and dynamic marker and its levels in simple hemogram analysis will guide pediatricians in determining the diagnosis and severity in MIS C.

BACKGROUND: Involving pre-sampled patients with cholecystitis, dysplasia, and adenocarcinoma, the present study aimed to compare the neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR), monocyte/lymphocyte (MLR), platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) ratios, and plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) values and to determine their prognostic importance. METHODS: The present study involved 187 cholecystectomy specimens that were diagnosed as cholecystitis, dysplasia, and adenocarcinoma. Preoperative neutrophil, monocyte, lymphocyte, and platelet counts, NLR, MLR, and PLR ratios, and PCT, MPV, and PDW levels of the same patient groups were retrospectively recorded. RESULTS: In the present study, the cut-off values for dysplasia of NLR, PLR, and MLR were found as 1.61, 81.45, and .19, whereas those for cancer of NLR, PLR, and MLR were 2.65, 182.69, and .35, respectively. The NLR, PLR, and MLR values of the chronic cholecystitis and chronic calculous cholecystitis groups were statistically significantly lower than those of the chronic active calculous cholecystitis group (P < .01). The NLR and MLR values of the non-cancer and non-dysplasia groups were statistically lower than those of the cancer and dysplasia groups (P < .05). CONCLUSION: According to the results of the present study, using additional imaging methods, acute-phase cholecystitis can be distinguished using preoperative neutrophil and monocyte counts, and NLR, PLR, and MLR cut-off values can be used to distinguish dysplasia, which is the antecedent of gallbladder cancer. It is thought that this might provide patients with an advantage in terms of early treatment and survival.

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular system of owl monkeys has been studied due to frequent postmortem findings of heart disease in asymptomatic animals. The silent aspect and the difficulty of early diagnosis intensify the importance of studying the cardiovascular system in this species. METHODS: Echocardiogram evaluation was carried out on 60 animals, grouped into suspect or non-suspect of having heart diseases, and evaluated through electrocardiogram, hematology, and biochemical tests. RESULTS: Doppler echocardiography indicated two animals with suspicion of left ventricular hypertrophy and eight with dilated cardiomyopathy. Suspect animals had higher cardiac measurements and reduced shortening fraction. Troponin I was detectable in two animals (0.128 ng/mL and 0.584 ng/mL), and serum albumin concentration was significantly higher in non-suspect animals (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The importance of echocardiographic measurements of IVSd, IVSs, LVIDd, LVIDs, LVPWd, LVPWs, LA, EF, and FS in the cardiac evaluation of captive owl monkeys was evidenced.

The sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus is considered a good candidate for aquaculture, but bacterial diseases are a major challenge in culture conditions. The innate immunological defenses of L. variegatus to bacterial challenges were assessed through hematology parameters, in vitro phagocytosis, lysozyme activity and total plasma protein concentrations in cell-free coelomic fluid. Adult sea urchins were inoculated with Microccocus lysodeikticus, Escherichia coli and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the cavity coelomic. Filtrated and sterile seawater (FSW) injected and non-injected sea urchins were used as control groups. Righting time, external aspects and behavior of sea urchins were evaluated. Twenty-four hours post-inoculation, we found an increase in the population of colorless spherule cells (CLS), phagocytosis, and humoral responses in sea urchins challenged by bacterial inoculations. Righting time was not affected by the treatments and apparent external signs of disease were not observed at least during 96h post-inoculation. The immunological system of L. variegatus quickly eliminated pathogenic microorganisms. CLS and lysozyme activity cooperate in the immune defenses of L. variegatus, showing an extraordinary efficiency for adjusting the immune defenses under stress caused by microbes. We recommend that the cellular and humoral markers serve as routine tests to monitor health status in sea urchins.

COVID-19 threatens millions of lives, especially elderly population and people with chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Rapid and effective diagnoses are vital for the isolation of infected people and starting treatment immediately to stop the spread of COVID-19 virus. Bioinformatics techniques such as artificial intelligence should be used for collecting the hemogram and serum biochemistry data of all COVID-19- infected people worldwide, even they do not show severe symptoms. These data may help find a biomarker that can be used in combination with the CT results for rapid and accurate diagnosis of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Although the effect of hemolysis has been extensively evaluated on clinical biochemical tests, a practical guidance for laboratory staff to rapidly determine whether a hemolyzed blood sample is acceptable and how to interpret the results is lacking. Here, we introduce a chart as a convenient reference for dealing with such samples. METHODS: Serum samples with 0.1%, 0.3%, 1%, 3%, and 10% hemolysis were prepared from sonicated endogenous red blood cells and received 35 wet and 22 dry clinical biochemical tests, respectively. The contributing part in the biochemical test result at each hemolysis condition was derived by subtracting the original test result of this sample with no hemolysis. The net results were used for analyses and preparation of the reference chart. RESULTS: The reference chart displayed the analytically calculated hemolysis interference and related statistical analyses. The chart also provided the color appearance of serum samples at each hemolysis condition for clinical staffs to determine whether a hemolyzed sample could be accepted. CONCLUSION: In clinical laboratories, preparation of such a reference chart is extremely useful in dealing with hemolyzed blood samples for clinical biochemical tests.

BACKGROUND: The vast impact of COVID-19 call for the identification of clinical parameter that can help predict a torpid evolution. Among these, endothelial injury has been proposed as one of the main pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the disease, promoting a hyperinflammatory and prothrombotic state leading to worse clinical outcomes. Leukocytes and platelets play a key role in inflammation and thrombogenesis, hence the objective of the current study was to study whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelets-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) as well as the new parameter neutrophil-to-platelet ratio (NPR), could help identify patients who at risk of admission at Intensive Care Units. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was performed at HM Hospitales including electronic health records from 2245 patients admitted due to COVID-19 from March 1 to June 10, 2020. Patients were divided into two groups, admitted at ICU or not. RESULTS: Patients who were admitted at the ICU had significantly higher values in all hemogram-derived ratios at the moment of hospital admission compared to those who did not need ICU admission. Specifically, we found significant differences in NLR (6.9 [4-11.7] vs 4.1 [2.6-7.6], p <  0.0001), PLR (2 [1.4-3.3] vs 1.9 [1.3-2.9], p = 0.023), NPR (3 [2.1-4.2] vs 2.3 [1.6-3.2], p <  0.0001) and SII (13 [6.5-25.7] vs 9 [4.9-17.5], p <  0.0001) compared to those who did not require ICU admission. After multivariable logistic regression models, NPR was the hemogram-derived ratio with the highest predictive value of ICU admission, (OR 1.11 (95% CI: 0.98-1.22, p = 0.055). CONCLUSIONS: Simple, hemogram-derived ratios obtained from early hemogram at hospital admission, especially the novelty NPR, have shown to be useful predictors of risk of ICU admission in patients hospitalized due to COVID-19.

The increase in the number of patients with hip pathologies among children of different ages makes the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases one of the most actually existing problems in modern orthopedics. The aim of the work was to determine the features of the lipid peroxidation system - antioxidant protection and hemogram indices in children with various forms of hip joint pathology. The results of a preoperative examination of 47 patients aged 6-15 years (average age 10.3 years) who were treated at the clinic "FSBI NICC" TO "named after academician G. A. Ilizarova, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. There were 25 boys and 20 girls. Given nosology, patients were divided into five groups. The diagnosis was established on the basis of a clinical and radiological examination. Group I consisted of 8 male patients with stage II Perthes disease (mean age 8.75 + 1.63). Group II includes 16 patients (8 boys, 7 girls) with stage III Perthes disease. (average age 11.80 + 0.89). Group III included 12 patients (6 boys, 6 girls) with aseptic necrosis of the femoral head (average age 14.7 + 2.35). Group IV consisted of 4 patients (1 boy, 3 girls) with epiphyseal dysplasia. (average age 10.25 + 1.36). Group V includes 7 patients with hip dysplasia complicated by aseptic necrosis of the femoral head (mean age 8.33 + 2.11). The norm is the data that was obtained after examining 10 healthy male adolescents (age 13-14) and 5 female adolescents (age 8-14 years). Changes in lipid peroxidation rates and antioxidant activity are unidirectional in different forms of pathology of the hip joints in children, and the content of peroxidation products reliably correlates with hemogram values in stage II osteochondropathy and complicated hip dysplasia. In the complex of diagnostic measures for children with dystrophic lesions of the hip joint, to clarify the nature and stage of the pathological process, as additional criteria, hemogram indicators and lipid peroxidation systems - antioxidant protection can be used.

AIM: Hemogram indices were proposed as novel inflammatory markers in chronic conditions and inflammation has substantial role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We aimed to observe hemogram parameters of type 2 diabetic male subjects with various age groups in well and poorly controlled subsets. METHODS: Data of type 2 diabetic men enrolled to the study were recorded from patient files of the institution. Study population were grouped into three according to the age. Group A was consisted of patients younger than 55 years, Group B was consisted of patients aged between 55 and 64 years, and Group C was consisted of patients aged 65 years or older. Data of the study groups were compared. RESULTS: Study population was consisted of 130 subjects; 44 in Group A and 43 in each of Groups B and C. Median red cell distribution width (RDW) (p = .04), mean RDW to platelet ratio (RPR) (p = .006), median mean platelet volume to platelet ratio (MPR) (p = .02) levels of the study groups were statistically different. HbA1c level was significantly and positively correlated with RDW (r = 0.45, p < .001), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (r = 0.47, p < .001), mean platelet volume to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) (r = 0.35, p < .001), MPR (r = 0.26, p = .003), and RPR (r = 0.37, p < .001) levels. CONCLUSION: Elevated RDW, NLR, MLR, MPR, and RPR levels in diabetic men should trigger the measurement of HbA1c since each were strongly correlated with HbA1c level. Moreover, elevated RDW, NLR, MLR, and RPR could be marker of worse diabetic control in men with T2DM.

This article uses a case-based approach, complemented with diagnostic algorithms and images, to highlight hematologic changes of pathologic relevance in horses, namely, marked erythrocytosis, anemia or leukocytosis, inflammatory leukograms, lymphocytosis in adult horses, thrombocytopenia, and pancytopenia. These hematologic abnormalities occur with certain diseases and their identification can help clinicians narrow to down differential diagnostic lists. This article highlights the importance of blood smear examination, particularly, but not only, when numerical red flags are identified on automated blood counts.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of injectable trace minerals (ITM) at the time of weaning on growth, antioxidant, and immune response of Nellore (Bos indicus) calves. Weaned calves (n = 159; 213 ± 32 kg) were stratified by body weight (BW) and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: injection (1 mL/45 kg of BW) of saline or ITM. Saline solution consisted of 0.9% NaCl, whereas ITM had 60, 10, 5, and 15 mg/mL of Zn, Mn, Se, and Cu, respectively. The application of ITM increased (P ≤ 0.04) the plasma concentrations of superoxide dismutase on day 7 and plasma glutathione peroxidase on day 7 and day 21. The ITM calves had greater leukocyte concentration on day 64 (P = 0.04), whereas neutrophil and mast cell concentrations did not differ (P ≥ 0.67) between treatments. The ITM calves tended (P ≤ 0.08) to have greater concentrations of lymphocytes on day 64 and eosinophils on day 21, but not (P ≥ 0.15) monocytes, erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin compared to saline calves. The ITM calves had less mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC; P = 0.02) and tended to have increased platelet concentrations on day 21 (P = 0.08). Growth performance did not differ between treatments (P ≥ 0.78). Thus, ITM at weaning did not impact growth performance, but increased plasma concentrations of antioxidant enzymes and blood platelets, improved components of the immune system, and reduced MCHC of Nellore calves.

BACKGROUND &OBJECTIVE: Subacute Granulomatous Thyroiditis (De Quervain's Thyroiditis) is an acute painful inflammatory disease of the thyroid. We aimed to investigate easily accessible and cheap hemogram based parameters of Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), and Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) in the follow up of inflammatory thyroid disease. METHODS: Patients admitted to Sakarya University Education and Research Hospital Endocrinology and Metabolism Outpatient Clinic and diagnosed as Subacute Granulomatous Thyroiditis between May 2017 and November 2018 were included in the study. Hemogram, thyroid function tests and acute phase values of these patients were recorded and compared with the values after treatment and disease recovery. On the sixth month, thyroid function tests were repeated and the rate of permanent hypothyroidism was screened. The relationships between initial hemogram parameters and acute phase reactants were evaluated. RESULTS: Total 71 patients were included in our study. 60 (84.5%) were female and 11 (15.5%) were male. The F/M ratio was found to be 6/1. Mean age was 43 ± 9.95 years. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) Curve Analysis was performed and values for Area Under the Curve (AUC) for NLR and PLR, respectively, were 0.739 (95% CI 0.657-0.820 p<0.0001) and 0.772 (95% CI 0.694-0.850 p<0.0001), which are significant and associated with disease activity. However, the AUC for MPV parameter was: 0.578 (95% CI 0.484-0.672 P: 0.10) and was not significant. The cut off values defined as 2.4 (80% sensitivity and 51% specificity) for NLR and 146.84 (83% sensitivity and 54% specificity) for PLR for the acute phase of the disease. In the Correlation Analysis, NLR and PLR values were significantly correlated with ESR and CRP parameters, which are the most commonly used acute phase reactants. CONCLUSION: According to the present study, we believe that the NLR and PLR parameters will be of benefit in the follow-up the disease, accurately demonstrate the inflammatory load in the acute phase of the disease, and correlate with the common acute phase reactants.

The pathology of the hip joints in children is the object of increased attention of specialists both in our country and abroad. Despite the wide coverage of this problem, most studies are devoted to analysis of the advantages of various surgical intervention technologies. To determine the significance of differences in hemogram indices in children with different nosological forms of hip joint pathology and indicators of healthy children. Hemogram and leukoformula parameters were determined in 10 healthy children and 47 children with hip joint pathology. The significance of differences in indicators compared with the norm and between different nosological groups of patients was evaluated. The dynamics of hemogram changes was evaluated at a long time after surgery. The largest deviations from normal hemogram values were found in a group of children with hip dysplasia complicated by aseptic necrosis of the femoral head. Two months after surgery, the main hemogram parameters in all groups of patients are normalized. The reactions of lipid peroxidation are changing, as evidenced by a decrease in the number of peroxidation products, primarily diene conjugates. Along with this, the activity of individual antioxidant enzymes changes - the activity of catalase decreases and the activity of superoxide dismutase increases. The most extreme values were noted in the group of children with epiphyseal dysplasia. In children with hip dysplasia complicated by aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, prior to surgical treatment, a statistically significant increase in the number of leukocytes and platelets in the blood serum is observed. In patients with epiphyseal dysplasia, osteochondropathy, both in the early and late stages, changes in the hemogram indices relate to the indicators of red blood cells and hemoglobin. In children with aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, hemogram values did not have statistically significant differences from the norm. In all groups of patients, destabilization of the peroxidation and antioxidant defense systems was noted.
