RESUMO

Adhesion G protein-coupled receptor G4 (ADGRG4) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that belongs to the adhesion family. Participation of ADGRG4 in cell adhesion and migration, signaling pathway activation, influence on angiogenesis, and modulation of immune responses are some of the possible ways through which it may contribute to oncogenesis. Conducting extensive omics studies poses budgetary challenges to small labs in peripheral areas, primarily due to restricted research funding and resource limitations. Here we propose a low-budget model for biomarker screening. A total of 11 ovarian cancer samples were sent for exome sequencing. Among various genes, ADGRG4 variants were present in all 11 samples and thus were chosen as a potential biomarker in the present population. However, the precise role of ADGRG4 in cancer is not fully understood. The present study aims to look at the association between the ADGRG4 gene variants and their risk of ovarian cancer in the North Indian region of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Overall, 235 individuals (115 cases and 120 healthy controls) were genotyped for the selected biomarker using Sanger sequencing. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between the variant and ovarian cancer. A statistically significant association was identified between the ADGRG4 variant rs5930932 polymorphism and the incidence of ovarian cancer among the study population. When corrected for age and BMI, the dominating OR of variant rs5930932 was 1.035 (1.003-1.069) under HWE patients (0.95) and controls (0.18), with a p-value of (0.03). According to the findings of the current investigation, the ADGRG4 gene variant rs5930932 increases the chance of developing ovarian cancer in the studied population.

INTRODUCTION: Amidst the challenges posed by Covid-19, assessing healthcare quality in India is crucial, particularly through patient satisfaction levels. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional survey of 277 participants in Jammu and Kashmir was conducted, utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire and PSQ-18. Data analysis was performed using SPSS (v25) including Chi-Square tests and Descriptive analysis. RESULTS: Out of 277 participants, 70.8% expressed high satisfaction with medical care. Majority (70%) agreed that doctors explained medical tests well. Additionally, 70% strongly agreed that their doctor's office was well-equipped. Dissatisfaction factors were notably low. Significant associations were found between age and alcohol use (p = 0.041), gender and alcohol use (p = 0.007), gender and tobacco use (p = 0.032), and education level and vaccination (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: The study highlights high patient satisfaction during the pandemic. Improving accessibility and quality of primary healthcare and community centres is essential to meet patient needs effectively.

Globally, rapid climate and land-use changes in alpine environments are posing severe risks to their bountiful biodiversity and ecosystem services. Currently, nature-based solutions are fast-emerging as the preferred approach to address the challenges of environmental sustainability. In alpine environments, cushion plants owing to their unique architecture and adaptability offer a potential nature-based system to plan biodiversity conservation and habitat restoration strategies. Here, we employed an analytical framework to test whether and how the cushion plants facilitate the sustenance of alpine plant diversity in Kashmir Himalaya. We specifically aimed to answer: what are the effects of the cushion plants on the patterns of alpine species richness and phylogenetic diversity, and whether these effects vary across spatial scales (local versus landscape), cushion types, and changing elevation. We randomly selected pairs of cushion and neighbouring non-cushion plots (size 100 m2) across 34 different alpine sites in the study region. Within each plot, we randomly laid three 5 m2 quadrats for vegetation sampling, and sampled a total of 204 quadrats in 68 plots with seven cushion types along elevation ranging from 3100 to 3850 m. Our results revealed positive effects of the cushions by supporting a higher community species richness (SR) and phylogenetic diversity (PD). The effects were consistent both at the local (i.e., quadrat) and landscape (i.e., plot) scales, but varied significantly with the cushion type. Interestingly, SR and PD showed an increasing trend with increase in elevation in cushion communities, thereby supporting stress gradient hypothesis. Along the elevational gradient, the cushion communities showed phylogenetic overdispersion, but clustering by non-cushions. Overall, our study provides empirical evidence to reinforce the role of the cushions as conservation refugia for an imperilled alpine plant diversity in the Himalaya. Looking ahead, we highlight the far-reaching implications of our findings in guiding the nature-based environmental management of alpine ecosystems worldwide.

Sustainable management of river systems is a serious concern, requiring vigilant monitoring of water contamination levels that could potentially threaten the ecological community. This study focused on the evaluation of water quality in the Jhelum River (JR), Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and northern Punjab, Pakistan. To achieve this, 60 water samples were collected from various points within the JR Basin (JRB) and subjected to a comprehensive analysis of their physicochemical parameters. The study findings indicated that the concentrations of physicochemical parameters in the JRB water remained within safety thresholds for both drinking and irrigation water, as established by the World Health Organization and Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency. These physicochemical parameters refer to various chemical and physical characteristics of the water that can have implications for both human health (drinking water) and agricultural practices (irrigation water). The spatial variations throughout the river course distinguished between the upstream, midstream, and downstream sections. Specifically, the downstream section exhibited significantly higher values for physicochemical parameters and a broader range, highlighting a substantial decline in its quality. Significant disparities in mean values and ranges were evident, particularly in the case of nitrates and total dissolved solids, when the downstream section was compared with its upstream and midstream counterparts. These variations indicated a deteriorating downstream water quality profile, which is likely attributable to a combination of geological and anthropogenic influences. Despite the observed deterioration in the downstream water quality, this study underscores that the JRB within the upper Indus Basin remains safe and suitable for domestic and agricultural purposes. The JRB was evaluated for various irrigation water quality indices. The principal component analysis conducted in this study revealed distinct covariance patterns among water quality variables, with the first five components explaining approximately 79% of the total variance. Recommending the continued utilization of the JRB for irrigation, we advocate for the preservation and enhancement of water quality in the downstream regions.

Unscientific dumping of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a common practice in Kashmir. To have an environmentally friendly and sustainable waste management system, MSW was collected from nine study locations of this region. They were air-dried, then oven-dried at 105 °C for 24 h, segregated, and characterized for various components. The overall average organic waste was > 55%, plastic waste about 17%, inert material about 10%, paper 9%, and cloth waste 7%. The calorific value of paper and plastic wastes exhibited was 4910 kcal/kg, while organic waste had a calorific value of 1980 kcal/kg. The proximate analysis showed that the moisture content ranged from 16 to 29%, volatile matter ranged from 49 to 72%, ash content ranged from 0.03 to 5%, and fixed carbon ranged from 5 to 20%. In S7, the volatile matter content recorded the lowest value at 49.15%, while in S5, the volatile matter content was notably higher at 71.84%, indicating easier ignition. Further, elemental analysis revealed that the major elements in MSW were carbon and oxygen, 53% and 37%, respectively, with small traces of heavy metals with an average of 0.02% cadmium (Cd) and 0.006% lead (Pb). Moreover, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) micrographs provided confirmation that the majority of components in the MSW exhibited either partial or complete degradation, resulting in a rough surface texture. In addition, the presence of silica and other silicate groups was also detected. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis revealed that the main functional groups were alcohol. In the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, all the major mineral phases were detected between 20 and 30° 2θ, except for the peaks at 50-60° 2θ in S3 and S9 where catalysts such as zeolite Y and zeolite X were detected. Overall, the MSW had low moisture content but higher calorific value, making it a viable feedstock.

The support groups within social networking sites such as Facebook have become a popular platform for various kinds of conversation and social support including health, especially among women. The aim of this study was to explore and analyze the types of health-related social support messages posted in a month by Kashmiri women in a Facebook group and the most common health topics for which social support was sought. A total of 302 health-related posts were selected for analysis. The results revealed that of various health-related social support posts in the group, informational support messages were posted more frequently and most requested information was related to pregnancy.

Exposure to violence can have profound and lasting effects on individuals and communities, impacting various aspects of their lives. Understanding the relationship between exposure to violence and resilience is crucial for designing effective interventions and support systems. This study aims to identify resilience factors among adults living in such areas and rank them from most to least important. Two staged mixed-method approaches, including face-to-face interviews and the best-worst method, were used to identify factors, assign weights, and rank them. A total of twenty-three sub-factors classified under seven broader factors were identified and ranked by triangulating the opinions of victims, experts, and scholars. Out of twenty-three sub-factors, the top-ranked six factors included family support, trusting higher powers, peer support, better interpersonal relationships, engaging in regular prayers, and better role models, which contributes fifty two percent to resilience formation. By promoting these factors, individuals and communities can better cope with the stress and trauma of violence, promote positive adaptation and growth, and build social support networks to help promote recovery and healing. Implications for practice, policy, and future directions are discussed.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) share common genetic features. Transcription factor 7-like-2 (TCF7L2) is consistently studied T2DM susceptibility locus. However, limited studies on TCF7L2 have failed to demonstrate any link with the PCOS risk. Therefore, we investigated the association of TCF7L2 polymorphic variant (rs12255372) with the PCOS risk. We recruited 120 PCOS cases, diagnosed as per Rotterdam 2003 criteria, and an equal number of age-matched controls. Besides a detailed clinical assessment, subjects underwent biochemical and hormonal profiling. Genotyping for rs12255372 was done by PCR-RFLP. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of genotype-phenotype correlations. The PCOS cases reported fewer menstrual cycles per year and exhibited signs of hyperandrogenism. The heterozygous genotype of rs12255372 was strongly associated with the PCOS risk (OR = 2.00; 95%CI: 1.07-3.76). Unlike controls, only 3 cases harbored TT genotype, and the PCOS risk persisted in the dominant model (GT + TT) as well. Moreover, we found a synergistic effect modification by the variant genotype in the subjects who had family histories of T2DM, hirsutism, or menstrual irregularities. We report a significant association of the TCF7L2 polymorphic variant rs12255372 with the PCOS risk.

Aconitum heterophyllum is a rare perennial herb from Kashmir Himalayas. Due to its threatened status and dependence on its environment, the plant was examined for any potential endophytes, which is of utmost importance for bioprospection. In the current study, endophytic fungal diversity associated with A. heterophyllum was examined, and 328 fungal isolates were found in the plant's leaf, stem, and root tissues. Twelve (12) endophytic fungal species were identified utilizing, molecular analysis of the nuclear ribosomal DNA Internal Transcribes Spacer (ITS), rLSU, and rSSU sequences. Maximum likelihood analysis was used to determine the phylogenetic connection between each isolate. The genera Arthrinium, Chaetomium, Purpureocillium, Alternaria, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Bjerkandera species dominated the ascomycete and basidiomycete fungal endophytes.

INTRODUCTION: The surge in novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection leading to coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has overwhelmed the health system. To help health-care workers and policy makers prioritize treatment and to decrease the burden on health systems caused by COVID-19, clinical severity along with various clinico-biochemical parameters was evaluated by designing a cross-sectional study comprising 236 SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals from Kashmir Valley, India. METHODS: Briefly, real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used for the confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The principles of spectrophotometry and chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) were employed to estimate the levels of glucose, TSH, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels in serum of infected patients. RESULTS: A total of 236 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 were taken for this cross-sectional study. Patients with COVID-19 had a male predominance (72.9 vs. 27.1%) and a higher prevalence of 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency (72.0 vs. 28.0%) with a mean 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels of 24.0 ± 13.9 in ng/mL. We observed a varied clinical spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 infection with 36.4%, 23.7%, and 29.7% patients having mild, moderate, and severe disease, respectively. We observed that severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection was significantly associated with older age group, hypertension, low TSH levels, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSION: We conclude that not only old age but also hypertension and low levels of TSH and 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels could significantly lead to clinical severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of Arylsulfatase A (ARSA) enzyme activity. Its clinical manifestations include progressive motor and cognitive decline. ARSA gene mutations are frequent in MLD. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the present study, whole exome sequencing (WES) was employed to decipher the genetic cause of motor and cognitive decline in proband's of two consanguineous families from J&K (India). Clinical investigations using radiological and biochemical analysis revealed MLD-like features. WES confirmed a pathogenic variant in the ARSA gene. Molecular simulation dynamics was applied for structural characterization of the variant. CONCLUSION: We report the identification of a pathogenic missense variant (c.1174 C > T; p.Arg390Trp) in the ARSA gene in two cases of late infantile MLD from consanguineous families in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Our study utilized genetic analysis and molecular dynamics simulations to identify and investigate the structural consequences of this mutation. The molecular dynamics simulations revealed significant alterations in the structural dynamics, residue interactions, and stability of the ARSA protein harbouring the p.Arg390Trp mutation. These findings provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenicity of this variant in MLD.

Wetland degradation through a diverse spectrum of anthropogenic stressors worldwide has taken a heavy toll on the health of wetlands. This study examined the health of a semi-urban wetland Bodsar, located in the Kashmir Himalaya using multicriteria analysis approach assimilating data on land use land cover (LULC), landscape fragmentation, soil loss, and demography. Wetland and catchment-scale land system changes from 1980 to 2022 were assessed using high-resolution imagery. Fragmentation of the natural landscape was assessed using the Landscape Fragmentation Tool (LFT) and soil loss was assessed using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). In addition, the water quality was examined at 12 sites distributed across the wetland using standard methods. Satellite data revealed 12 categories of land use with areas under exposed rock, orchards, built-up and sparse forest having increased by 1005%, 623%, 274%, and 37% respectively. LFT indicated that the core (>500 acres) and core (<250 acres) zones decreased by approximately 16% and 64%, respectively, whereas the areas under the perforated, edge and patch classes increased significantly. RUSLE estimates show a ∼77% increase in soil erosion from 116.26 Mg a-1 in 1980 to 205.68 Mg a-1 in 2022, mostly due to changes in LULC. Total phosphorus (0.195-2.04 mg L -1), nitrate nitrogen (0.306-2.79 mg L -1), and total dissolved solids (543-774 mg L-1) indicated nutrient enrichment of the wetland influenced by anthropogenically-driven land system changes. The wetland degradation index revealed that 21% of the wetland experienced high-to-severe degradation, 62% experienced moderate degradation, and 17% did not face any significant degradation pressure. The novel GIS-based approach adopted in this study can act as a prototype for ascertaining the catchment-scale degradation of wetlands worldwide.

An associated microbiome of any host helps it in different metabolic processes ranging from the decomposition of food to the maturation of gametes. Organisms with a parasitic mode of life, though present at nutritious sites inside their host, maintain their own microbiome. Nevertheless, the comprehensive characterization and functionality of microbiome in parasitic organisms remain understudied. We selected two nematode parasites of Kashmir Merino sheep viz;Haemonchus contortus and Trichuris ovis based on their higher prevalence, difference in mode of nutrition, habitation site and effect on host. The objective of the study was to explore the bacteria associated with these parasitic nematodes of sheep. We adopted a 16S rRNA metagenomic sequencing approach to estimate and compare the bacterial communities present in these two nematode species. Nematode parasites from Kashmir Merino sheep were identified morphologically and confirmed with DNA characterization. H. contortus was dominated by phylum Proteobacteria (57%), Firmicutes (25%), Bacteroidota (15%) and Actinobacteriota (3%). Conversely, T. ovis showed Proteobacteria (78%) followed by Firmicutes (8%), Bacteroidota (8%), Actinobacteriota (1%), Fusobacteriota (1%) and other phyla (4%). This study provides a comprehensive account of the microbiome composition of H. contortus and T. ovis, both of which are highly prevalent among Kashmir Merino sheep. Additionally, T. ovis exhibited a greater bacterial diversity compared to H. contortus. Notably, these nematodes were found to harbor certain pathogenic bacteria. This study can further be carried forward in gaining insights into the complex relationship between the microbiota of a parasite and its pathogenicity, reproductive potential and host microbiome modification.

In the Himalaya, collection of fodder from protected areas by local communities for sustenance of their livestock is an integral part of mountain farming systems. Here, we assess the diversity and utilization patterns of fodder resources collected by local communities from Overa-Aru wildlife sanctuary in Kashmir Himalaya. A multi-stage random sampling was employed to select sample villages (5) and households (81) for the survey. Data were collected through personal interviews of household heads administering an interview schedule and then analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear regression model. The results revealed that 74 fodder species were collected by the local communities from the sanctuary. The diversity and magnitude of fodder resource utilization varied across the study area. The fodder collection and utilization on per day and annual basis ranged from 25 to 90 and 2760 to 13,770 kg/household, respectively. Across the surveyed villages, the fodder was mainly collected by the females (60%). A positive but non-significant relationship was found between the number of persons collecting fodder and quantity of fodder collection/household/day, while a positive and significant relationship was found between the herd size and quantity of fodder collection/household/day. We also found a negative but non-significant relationship between the education status of respondents and the number of livestock holding. Based on our findings, we suggest policy and management interventions such as regulating livestock grazing, promoting plantation of frequently collected fodder species, and better use of agriculture byproducts to guide the sustainable management of fodder resources in this Himalayan protected area, with learning for elsewhere.

Water is an essential part of human life, and its pollution is a hotly debated topic on both national and international scales. Surface waterbodies in the beautiful Kashmir Himalayas are already deteriorating. In this study, fourteen physio-chemical parameters were tested in water samples taken during the spring, summer, autumn, and winter seasons from twenty-six different sampling points. The findings showed a consistent decline in the water quality of river Jhelum and its adjoining tributaries. The upstream section of the river Jhelum had the least pollution, whereas the Nallah Sindh had the poorest water quality. The water quality of Jhelum and Wular Lake was strongly impacted by the water quality of all the adjoining tributaries. To examine the link between the selected water quality indicators, descriptive statistics and a correlation matrix were used. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and principal component analysis/factor analysis (PCA/FA) were used to identify the key variables that influenced seasonal and sectional water quality fluctuations. The ANOVA analysis revealed that there were significant differences in water quality characteristics among the twenty-six sampling locations throughout all four seasons. The PCA findings identified four principal components that accounted for 75.18% of the total variance and could be utilized to evaluate all data. The study revealed that chemical, conventional, organic, and organic pollutants were significant latent factors influencing the water quality of rivers in the region. The findings of this study could contribute to the vital management of surface water resources in Kashmir's ecology and environment.

Earth observation (EO) technology offers enormous opportunities to assess the magnitude and patterns of spatial variability in wetlands over time. This study aims to assess the spatial and temporal changes in the wetlands of the Kashmir valley using multiple remote sensing satellite data products, Geographic Information System (GIS), and field observations. Moreover, role of major factors operating at different time scales including regional geology, climate, and human activities in driving the wetland change is presented. The dynamics of the wetlands are illustrated in the occurrence, seasonality, and recurrence of surface water, land cover transitions and loss patterns particularly for the period from 1984 to 2021. Constituting about 3% (495 Km2) of the total area, substantial and variable patterns of seasonal and annual changes are exhibited by the wetlands. The main transitions of the water surface reveal that 2% of the area has changed from permanent to seasonal; 8% is lost; 15% is new seasonal; 0.12% is permanently lost; and 0.3% is new permanent. About 22% of the area reveals increase in the intensity of water surface occurrence, whereas 44% shows no change, and 34% exhibits decrease. Bathymetric analysis suggests that the average depth of the wetlands ranges between 0.6 and 16.6 m. In general, alpine wetlands are relatively deeper and mostly static in their structure whereas those in the floodplain are shallow, fragmented, and showing signs of depletion during the assessment period. The results of this assessment will inform the policy on conservation and sustainability of wetlands in the Kashmir Himalaya.

Total coliforms, E. coli, and fecal streptococci are the important indicators linked to the human health. This study investigated presence of these indicator bacteria in the Himalayan springs at various locations in the district Kulgam of Kashmir valley. A total of 30 spring water samples were collected from rural, urban, and forest areas during post-melting season 2021 and pre-melting season 2022. The springs in the area originate from the alluvium deposit, Karewa, and hard rock formations. The physicochemical parameters were found within the acceptable limits. However, nitrate and phosphate were found above the permissible limit at few sites, thus indicating the presence of anthropogenic activities in the area. Majority of the samples during both the seasons were found highly loaded with total coliforms with maximum limit of greater than 180 MPN/100 ml. E. coli and fecal streptococci were found in the range of less than 1 to more than 180 MPN/100 ml. The results of Pearson correlation of physicochemical parameters with indicator bacteria showed that chemical oxygen demand, rainfall, spring discharge, nitrate, and phosphate are the main factors affecting the concentration of indicator bacteria in the spring water at each site. Principal component analysis showed the most influencing factors of water quality in most of the spring sites are total coliforms, E. coli, fecal streptococci, rainfall, discharge, and chemical oxygen demand. The results of this study showed that the spring water is unfit for drinking purpose because of high concentration of fecal indicator bacteria.

Achieving socioeconomic growth can be done by enhancing national health. The availability and provision of health infrastructure in an administrative territory affect the health of ordinary people. People's access to healthcare is inversely correlated with the availability of a region's health infrastructure. This study investigates inter-district health infrastructure disparities in the newly created Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir. Using principal component analysis, this study developed a district-level health infrastructure index (HII) for 2018-2019. The study demonstrates the existence of inter-district disparities in the Union Territory's health infrastructure. Regarding health infrastructure, Doda has the highest HII and has been designated a 'developed' district. Doda is followed by Jammu, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Ramban, Samba, Reasi and Kulgam, which also fall into the 'developed' districts category. Backward districts include Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, Budgam, Shopian, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Anantnag. Srinagar district, with the lowest HII, was identified as the most backward district in the Jammu and Kashmir UT. All of the districts of the Kashmir division, apart from Kulgam, are classified as being 'backward' or 'very backward'. Therefore, it is evident that the Jammu division of UT has a better health infrastructure than the Kashmir division.

Background: Limited studies have been done regarding the prevalence of Rickettsial diseases in India and as far as UT of Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, only a few hospital-based studies are available. Objectives: The present study was therefore planned to find the seroprevalence of Rickettsial diseases in Kashmir Valley. Materials and Methods: A multistage sampling procedure was used for the collection of samples from 10 districts of Kashmir Valley and a total of 1740 samples were collected. In addition, 802 healthy blood donors were included to establish baseline titers for Weil-Felix (WF) Test. Results: Of 1734 subjects, 73 were positive by the WF test. The overall seroprevalence of Rickettsial diseases was 4.1% with the highest prevalence of scrub typhus (2.30%) followed by the spotted fever group (1.5%) and typhus group (0.40%). Maximum seropositive subjects were from district Kulgam (6.97%) followed by Pulwama (5.92%), Shopian (5.79%), Anantnag (5.47%), Ganderbal (5.00%), Kupwara (4.72%), Baramulla (4.62%), Srinagar (2.63%), Bandipora (2.41%), and Budgam (0.54%), respectively. Seropositivity was higher in females and subjects who had contact with ticks and mites like those involved in the collection of firewood and grass or had contact with uncut grass or shrub. The seropositivity was also significantly higher in those working in paddy fields and those living near the forest (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of the present study confirm the existence of Rickettsial diseases in this region. This data would promote awareness of rickettsioses among local physicians and will also serve as a baseline to detect changing prevalence in the future.

This study aimed to isolate and characterize probiotic Lactobacilli from human faecal samples of Jammu region of India and evaluation of their antioxidative properties. A total of 29 Lactobacillus strains were isolated and tested for their ability to withstand different pH levels, high concentrations of bile salt and lysozyme along with their adhesion ability to different hydrocarbons and auto-aggregation. Selected probiotic Lactobacillus isolates were further examined for their antioxidant potential using ABTS, DPPH methods, and the ability to scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. The results showed that Lactobacillus LpJ1 (7.93 ± 0.23) and LpJ5 (7.93 ± 0.59) had the highest cell viability at a pH of 2.5, while Lactobacillus LpJ16 (7.91 ± 0.48) had the highest resistance to bile salts. Many of the isolates also demonstrated good tolerance to lysozyme. The adhesion abilities of these isolates were characterized by cell surface hydrophobicity and auto aggregation which ranged between 50.32% to 77.8% and 51.02% to 78.95% respectively. In addition, Lactobacillus LpJ5 and LpJ8 showed excellent antioxidant activity. Based on these findings, the selected probiotic strains could be potential candidates for use in functional food to reduce oxidative stress.
