With global climate change and increasingly extreme weather conditions, the water quality of the Lijiang River Basin (LRB) is facing huge threats. At present, there is still a lack of systematic research on water quality indicators and the influence of indirect factors such as meteorological factors on it in the LRB. Therefore, this study is based on the meteorological, hydrological, and water quality data of the LRB from 2012 to 2018, using the Mann-Kendall test, Morlet wavelet method, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, sensitivity, and contribution rate to quantitative analysis of the relationship between climate conditions and water quality indicators. The results show that the change trends of these hydrological and climatic conditions have almost no significant sudden change; precipitation and streamflow are decreasing each year; the streamflow trend exhibits time hysteresis; precipitation has a stronger influence downstream than on the local area; water quality indicators of both stations exhibited a change period of around 18 to 20 months, with the exception of pH. Water quality indicators are insensitive to precipitation and streamflow, and sensitive to humidity and wind speed; DO was negatively correlated with climate indicators apart from wind speed; almost all water quality indicators in Yangshuo are highly sensitive to air temperature, and the contribution rate of air temperature to ORP and TP reached 4.81% and 3.56%, respectively; sunshine duration has a positive impact on reducing NH4-N and TP. The difference between Yangshuo and Guilin is mostly due to the input of external sources on both sides of the Lijiang River, which results in variations in climate conditions sensitivities.

Guilin is a typical representative of karst landform in South China. Because of its unique geographical landform and hydrological environment, Lijiang River Basin has received a certain degree of attention in field of ecology and sustainable development. Explore and visualize the hotspots and frontiers of Guilin Lijiang River Basin Ecology and Sustainable Development (GLRBESD) by using bibliometrics, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer. Results showed that number of published papers was in a fluctuating upward trend from 1992 to 2022 and from 2011 to 2022, respectively. Work of scholars in this field has been continuously strengthened and deepened, and overall scientific research results show an increasing trend. Research objects and topics are mainly aimed at the water resources, climate, and environment of GLRB Landscape ecology and SDG index construction. Research of GLRBESD-published documents has the characteristics of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary integration. High-frequency keywords in research field focus on ecotourism, ecological restoration, and sustainable development, mainly based on the research of ecotourism development. Impact of environmental factor changes and human activities on land use change in different periods is an important research topic. Core research field of GLRBESD on macro-scale can be divided into ESV and function, ecological compensation and ecotourism, ecological environment and ecological restoration, ecological network and ecological risk assessment, and sustainable development. This research provides systematic scientific research basis for enhancing sustainable development ability and ecosystem functions and services of World Natural Heritage Site.

The aim of this study was to explore the carbon storage potential of karst forest soils in the Lijiang River Basin, reveal the spatial pattern of soil organic carbon (SOC), investigate the contributions and pathways of each driving factor to the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon, and provide a scientific basis for assessing the carbon cycle function of karst forests in the region. We employed structural equation modeling (SEM) and correlation analysis to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics of forest soil organic carbon in different basin sections (upper, middle, and lower reaches) and soil layers at different depths of the Lijiang River. Additionally, the direct and indirect ratios of each factor were quantified. The results showed that the overall soil layer of karst forest soils in the Lijiang River Basin was shallow, and soil organic carbon was phenoconcentric. The distribution of soil organic carbon content in different watershed sections was upstream > downstream > midstream, and the distribution of readily oxidizable carbon (ROC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was consistent, whereas the distribution of microbial biomass carbon (MBC) was upstream > midstream > downstream. The contribution of various biotic and abiotic factors to the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon in karst forests in the watershed was different, and their contributions were ranked in descending order as:soil physicochemical factors > soil organic carbon active fraction > sample elevation > sample species diversity, with the total effects of 1.148, 0.574, 0.284, and -0.013, respectively. Among them, the sample site elevation had only an indirect effect on soil organic carbon, and the soil organic carbon active fraction had only a direct effect on soil organic carbon. Among the driving factors, total soil nitrogen, soil oxidizable organic carbon, sample site species richness, and soil soluble organic carbon could be used as important predictors of soil organic carbon content in karst forests in the Lijiang River Basin. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an effective eco-environmental protection mechanism covering the whole Lijiang River Basin, to reduce and control the impact of anthropogenic disturbances (especially in the middle urban section of the Lijiang River Basin), and to enhance and protect the species diversity of karst forests in the basin in order to improve soil physicochemical properties, improve and enhance the content of the soil organic carbon active fraction, and enhance the soil organic carbon stocks of karst forests in the Lijiang River Basin through other effective ways, as well as to promote the enhancement of the regional forest carbon sink function.

Introduction: Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J. Houz.), the most widely distributed economic bamboo species in southern China, can easily invade adjacent communities due to its clonal reproduction. However, there is little information on the effects of its establishment and expansion to adjacent forest soil communities, particularly in planted forests. Methods: We investigated the relationships between soil properties and the microbial community during bamboo invasion under different slope directions (shady or sunny slope) and positions (bottom, middle, or top slope), in three typical stand types (bottom: pure moso bamboo, middle: mixed stands of moso bamboo and Masson pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.), and top: pure Masson pine) in the Lijiang River Basin. This study aimed to explore the effects of key environmental factors on soil microbial composition, diversity, and abundance. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the abundance of Acidobacteria bacterium and Acidobacteria bacterium 13_2_20CM_58_27, and Verrucomicrobia bacterium decreased as the slope increased (p < 0.05), whereas the abundance of Alphaproteobacteria bacterium, Actinobacteria bacterium, Trebonia kvetii, and Bradyrhizobium erythrophlei increased as the slope increased (p < 0.05). However, the difference of slope direction on microbial communities was not significant. The pH, organic matter (OM) and total phosphorus (TP) were the key soil environmental factors; most microorganisms (Betaproteobacteria bacterium, Candidatus Eisenbacteria bacterium, Betaproteobacteria bacterium SCGC_AG - 212 - J23, Gemmatimonadetes bacterium, Actinobacteria bacterium 13_2_20CM_2_66_6, and Myxococcaceae bacterium) showed a positive relationship with pH and a negative relationship with OM and TP. Slope position significantly affected OM, calcium (Ca), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP), hydrolyzed nitrogen (HN), pH, and microbial abundance and composition. Slope direction significantly affected TP and magnesium (Mg). The structural equations also indicated that slope position had an effect on microbial composition, abundance, and diversity. Slope position was negatively correlated with pH (r = -0.333, p = 0.034) and positively correlated with OM (r = 0.728, p < 0.001), TN (r = 0.538, p < 0.001) and Ca (r = 0.672, p < 0.001); pH was positively correlated with microbial composition (r = 0.634, p < 0.001), abundance (r = 0.553, p < 0.001) and diversity (r = 0.412, p = 0.002), TN was positively correlated with microbial composition (r = 0.220, p = 0.014) and abundance (r = 0.206, p = 0.013), and Ca was negatively correlated with microbial composition (r = -0.358, p = 0.003) and abundance (r = -0.317, p = 0.003). Slope position can also influence microbial composition (r = 0.452, p < 0.001) directly. In addition, slope direction had an indirect effect on microbial diversity through total potassium (TK). Therefore, we proposed that the different variations in microbial community during bamboo invasion could be related to the influence of invasion on the soil properties at different invasion stages.

In China, rural settlements have undergone significant changes in response to dramatic socioeconomic shifts. However, there has not been any report on rural settlements in the Lijiang River Basin. In this study, ArcGIS 10.2 (including hot spot analysis and kernel density estimation) and Fragstats 4.2 (such as the landscape pattern index) software were used to analyze the spatial pattern and causes of rural settlements in the Lijiang River Basin. The Lijiang River Basin is mainly dominated by micro- and small-sized rural settlements with small areas. Moreover, the results of a hot spot analysis showed that micro- and small-sized rural settlements were mainly located in the upper reaches, and medium- and large-sized rural settlements were mainly located in the middle and lower reaches. The kernel density estimation results showed that the distribution characteristics of the rural settlements in the upper, middle, and lower reaches were significantly different. The spatial forms of rural settlements were affected by physiographic factors such as elevation and slope, karst landforms, and river trunk channels as well as the national policy system, tourism economic development, town distribution, historical heritage, and minority culture. This study is the first to systematically elaborate on the rural settlement pattern and its internal logic from the perspective of the Lijiang River Basin, providing a basis for the optimization and construction of the rural settlement pattern.

As the climate and the external environment have changed, the environmental factors of the Lijiang River Basin (LRB) have changed, posing new threats to the environmental quality, ecosystem balance, and management and protection of the water environment of the Lijiang River. Water quality indicators and environmental factors vary spatially along the Lijiang River, which runs through urban areas, farmland, and karst areas. However, research on the response of water quality to water environmental factors is still lacking. Within this context, this study considered statistical methods and hydrological, meteorological, and water quality data of the middle and lower reaches of the Lijiang River from 2012 to 2018, expounded on the temporal and spatial change characteristics and evolution trends of water quality indicators; we analyzed the correlation between water quality indicators and environmental factors; we quantitatively assessed the sensitivity and contribution rate of water quality indicators to environmental factors. The results demonstrated that rainfall feedback on the river streamflow was lagging, and upstream precipitation often affected downstream streamflow. The water quality in the upper reaches of Guilin has improved year by year, and pollution levels have increased slightly when flowing through the urban area of Guilin. In spite of this, it still falls within the range of self-purification. River characteristics heavily influence the impact of environmental factors on water quality indicators; in contrast, the effects of different locations along the same river are more similar. Four water quality indicators are negatively correlated with water temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO). The sensitivities of ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) and chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) to streamflow increase with the flow direction. The contribution rates of DO-to-total phosphorus (TP) and pH-to-TP are over -6%. Water temperature is the major contributing factor in the Lijiang River, while DO has a higher contribution in tributaries. The external sources affect the concentration of various water quality indicators and the sensitivity of water quality indicators to the external environment. There should be a series of measures implemented to reduce pollution, such as using oxygenation or chemical means to increase pH in Dahe and Yangshuo to control water pollutants. Tourism and particular karst topography make LRB's calculations unique, but the research method can be applied to other watersheds as well.

In order to clarify the pollution levels of heavy metals in the drinking water sources of the Lijiang River Basin, surface water samples were collected from 62 sites throughout the Lijiang River during May 2019. Heavy metals, including As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Hg, Co, and Sb, in the water samples were analysed. Health risk assessments associated with these nine heavy metals were conducted using the health risk assessment model from the US EPA. The results indicated that the order of the average concentrations of heavy metals in the water samples were Mn > Zn > As > Cr > Cu > Sb > Co > Cd > Hg. No heavy metals exceeded the limit values of the drinking water health standards in China (GB 5749-2006), and the concentrations were lower than the limitations of Grade Ⅰ level in the environmental quality standards for surface water (GB 3838-2002). According to the spatial distribution, the high contents areas of As, Cr, Zn, and Sb were predominantly distributed downstream of the Lijiang River, while the high contents areas of Cd, Cu, Hg, Co, and Mn were mostly distributed in the upper reaches. Multivariate analysis indicated that Cd, Mn, Cu, and Co were primarily from agricultural production; Cr, Zn, and Sb were mainly from tourism transportation; As was predominantly from the weathering of rock parent material and soil erosion; Hg was mainly from the improper disposal of domestic garbage and atmospheric deposition. The results of the health risk assessment indicated that children were more susceptible to the threat of heavy metal pollution than adults, and the average annual risk of carcinogenic heavy metals to human health through drinking water ingestion were higher than those of non-carcinogenic metals. The maximum personal average annual health risk of Cr was higher than the maximum allowance levels recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (5×10-5 a-1). The average annual risk of non-carcinogenic heavy metals (10-14-10-9 a-1) decreased in the order of Co > Cu > Hg > Zn > Sb > Mn, which were far below the maximum allowance levels recommended by the ICRP.

It is of great significance for the coordinated development of the environment and the economy to study the impact of the human driving factors of land use change (LUC) on ecosystem service value (ESV). In this study, we combined the biomass and remote sensing data of the Lijiang River Basin (LRB), which is a typical karst basin with a fragile ecological environment, to establish an ESV model to calculate the ESV. We also introduced the Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient to further analyze the impacts of the human driving factors of LUC on ESV. The results show that (1) the ESV in the LRB from 1995 to 2015 decreased from 8640.03 million yuan to 8595.38 million yuan, with a total decrease of 44.65 million yuan, indicating that the overall ESV in the region has a decreasing trend; (2) the obvious changes in land use caused a significant loss in ESV and changes in the structure of ecosystem services; and (3) the human driving factors of the total population, GDP, and urbanization rate are inversely related to the ESV in the LRB.

The hydrochemistry of river water in a karst basin has a rapid response to the rainstorm/flood process, which is an important process of the karst carbon cycle and should not be ignored. Based on the dynamic monitoring of the hydrochemical characteristics of the flood process in the Yangshuo section on November 8-12, 2015, the dynamic change in the main ions and the influencing factors were analyzed, and the concentration and flux of inorganic carbon from different sources were calculated. The results showed that the hydrochemistry types in different stages of the flood area belonged to the Ca-HCO3 type. The ions were mainly sourced from carbonate weathering, and affected by silicate weathering, rainfall, and human activities. Because of the hydrological process, the weathering strength of carbonate rocks sharply weakened at the beginning of the flood, and then gradually increased. The concentrations of HCO3-, Ca2+, and Mg2+ sharply decreased at the beginning of the flood, then gradually increased, and continued to increase in the second flood process because of the waterlogging in the karst system. Because of the waterlogging, the reaction time between water and rock become longer; thus, the concentrations are higher. The dynamic changes in SO42-, Cl-, Na+, and K+ were mainly affected by precipitation and human activities. At the beginning of the flood, the concentrations of SO42-, Cl-, Na+, and K+ increased because the runoff takes more ions sourced from activities. The concentrations of SO42-, Cl-, Na+, and K+ decreased with the decrease of easily transported substances. At the lowest point of concentration, SO42- and Cl- were mainly sourced from precipitation, and Na+ and K+ were mainly sourced from precipitation and silicate weathering. The weathering of carbonates by carbonic acid was the main source of inorganic carbon, accounting for 74.3% of total inorganic carbon on average. Because of the input of sulfuric/nitric acid, the contribution of the weathering of carbonates by sulfuric/nitric acid to the inorganic carbon cannot be ignored, and the contribution increased significantly in the flood, up to 31.7%. The geological carbon sinks before the flood, and during the first and second flood processes in the Yangshuo section were 1.28×108, 5.28×108, and 11.52×108 g·d-1, respectively. The geological carbon sink before the flood was equal to the annual average flux, whereas the geological carbon sink in the flood process was several times that of the annual average flux. Moreover, because of the significant difference in the weathering strength of carbonate rocks during the two floods, there was also a significant difference in the amount of geological carbon sink under the same discharge.

Karst processes play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Aquatic phototrophs can transform bicarbonate, which is mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates, into organic carbon. Carbonate mineral weathering coupled with aquatic photosynthesis can be considered a stable and durable carbon sink process. In this study, we addressed seasonal variations in water chemistry in the Lijiang River Basin, which is a typical karst basin, through a comprehensive geochemical study of the river water in four seasons. The parameters were measured in situ, including major ions and isotopes of inorganic and organic carbon. The results showed that (1) DIC was mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates; (2) the transformation from bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs was evident, and the water chemistry changed, especially in spring and autumn and in the mainstream from Guilin to Yangshuo, which benefited the growth of aquatic phototrophs; and (3) the organic carbon derived from bicarbonates by aquatic phototrophs was nearly half the total organic carbon and 8% of the dissolved inorganic carbon. These results imply that aquatic phototrophs in karst basins can significantly stabilize carbon originating from carbonate rock weathering processes in karst areas.

Taking Lijiang River basin as study area, and based on the remote sensing images of 1973, 1986, 2000 and 2013, the land-use data were extracted, the ecological risk index was constructed, and the characteristics of spatiotemporal variation of ecological risk were analyzed by "3S" technique. The results showed that land use structure of Lijiang River basin was under relatively reasonable state and it was constantly optimizing during 1973-2013. Overall, the ecological risk of Lijiang River basin was maintained at a low level. Lowest and lower ecological risk region was dominant in Lijiang River basin, but the area of highest ecological risk expanded quickly. The spatial distribution of ecological risk was basically stable and showed an obvious ring structure, which gra-dually decreased from the axis of Xingan County Town-Lingchuan County Town-Guilin City-Yangshuo County Town to other regions. Region with lowest ecological risk mainly distributed in natural mountain forest area of the north and mid-eastern parts of Lijiang River basin, and region with highe-st ecological risk concentrated in Guilin City. The ecological risk distribution of Lijiang River basin presented significant slope and altitude differences, and it decreased with increasing slope and altitude. During the study period, the area of low ecological risk converted to high ecological risk gra-dually decreased and vice versa. On the whole, the ecological risk tended to decline rapidly in the Lijiang River basin.
