ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The plant, Calotropis procera, has been used for treating various gastrointestinal disorders and cancer. Some of these medicinal properties have been attributed to the latex produced by the plant. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the efficacy of methanol extract of air-dried latex (MeDL) of C. procera in the rat model of colorectal cancer (CRC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: CRC was induced in the rats by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) and the effect of MeDL was evaluated at two doses (50 and 150 mg/kg). MeDL and reference drug aspirin (60 mg/kg) were administered orally starting from 1 h before injecting DMH till 8 weeks after the second dose of DMH. The study also included experimental and normal control groups. Microscopic analysis was carried out to determine the count for aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and histology score whereas enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunohistochemical analyses were performed for markers of carcinogenesis and angiogenesis. Other parameters that were evaluated include deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragmentation, laddering, Bcl2 and Bax immunoreactivity, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) positivity. RESULTS: Subcutaneous injection of DMH induced pre-neoplastic changes in the colon of rats with the appearance of ACF with multiple crypts (1-3, 4-6 or >6). In the experimental control group, total ACF count was 3.49 ± 0.23/cm of the colon length and the median histology score was 2.0 for architectural abnormalities, 2.0 for dilatation of crypts and 1.5 for hyperplasia/dysplasia against 1.0 for all the characteristics in normal rats. Oral administration of MeDL similar to aspirin, led to a reduction in ACF count and histology score of CRC concomitant with a decrease in the levels of markers of carcinogenesis - ß-catenin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA); markers of angiogenesis - matrix metallopeptidase-9 (MMP-9) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and an increase in apoptotic DNA fragmentation. CONCLUSION: MeDL confers protection in the rat model of CRC and the study suggests its therapeutic potential in this condition.

Chemically speaking, polymers are multi-molecular compounds that have specific physicochemical properties. Hair cosmetics utilize their ability to create a protective film and make the cosmetic formulation more viscous, which facilitates its application. Natural polymers are encountered in nature, but, in hair cosmetics, artificially modified ones are more often used. Unfortunately, artificially modified polymers are characterized by high resistance to biological factors, which creates an ecological problem. Another reason for a search for natural polymers is their milder action when compared to synthetic ones. One of the new sources of obtaining collagen is the waste connective tissue materials of aquatic animals-skins, spines, dorsal chords and scales, and swim bladders. These raw materials are most often disposed of in landfills, processed into fish meal, or destined for food for animals. The conducted research was aimed at proving the action of natural collagen in hair cosmetics as a substitute for synthetic polymers. In the patients using collagen laminate, it is possible to notice the complete elimination of excessive sebum production, restoration of the correct pH value, and reduction in skin inflammations.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was clinical assessment of the reduction of pathological motor phenomena with the recovery of long toe extensors, and evaluation of functional outcome with simultaneous nerve and tendon transfer in cases of common peroneal nerve (CPN) injuries. METHODS: Seven male patients (mean age 26.4 years) received a partial tibial nerve transfer to the extensor hallucis longus muscle (MEHL) and extensor digitorum longus muscle (MEDL) motor branches, after a mean of 2.7 months following a traction-type injury to the CPN. Tibialis posterior muscle (MTP) tendon transfer through the interosseous route was performed on the same day. The follow-up period included a clinical neurological examination, a modified Stanmore System questionnaire (MSSQ), electromyographic examination of the interference pattern, and a video-based analysis of the gait biomechanics in the 3rd and 12th months. Video analysis of the gait investigated the presence or reduction of "stair-climbing maneuver" (SCM), foot slap (FS), and foot stability during the gait cycle. RESULTS: The average range of active dorsiflexion in the 3rd month was 0.85°. SCM accompanied walking in 6 patients (86%). FS accompanied walking in 3 patients (43%) and 3 patients (43%) avoided FS by planting the entire foot on the ground. All patients required orthopedic support (shoe inserts) to compensate for mediolateral foot instability. The average MSSQ score was 80.4 points. The average duration for the effective recovery of function (≥ 4 points on the Medical Research Council grading system) of long toe extensors was 11.2 months. The average range of active dorsiflexion in the 12th month increased to 4.4°. A reduction of FS was observed in 5 patients (71%). Excessive foot eversion was reduced in 4 patients (57%). Another 3 patients (43%) required no specific orthopedic shoe inserts. Reduction of pathological motor phenomena with recovery of the long toe extensors resulted in an increase of functional outcome. The average MSSQ score after 12 months was 92.4 points. CONCLUSIONS: Partial tibial nerve transfer to the motor branches of the extensor hallucis longus and the long toe extensors along with the simultaneous tibialis posterior tendon transfer produce the reduction of FS and bring mediolateral stability to the foot, i.e., improved gait biomechanics. The reduction of pathological motor phenomena at the time of recovery of the long toe extensors is reflected in an increase in patients' functional perception of the injured lower extremity during daily walking.
