This study examined the effects of liquid nitrogen vapor on osteogenesis in the rabbit femur. Cryotweezers made of porous nickel titanium alloy (nitinol or NiTi) obtained by self-propagating high temperature synthesis were used in this experiment. The porous structure of the cryotweezers allows them to hold up to 10 g of liquid nitrogen after being immersed for 2 min, which completely evaporates after 160 s. To study the effects of liquid nitrogen evaporation on osteogenesis, a rabbit femur was perforated. The formed holes were subjected to cryotherapy with varying exposure times. It was found that a 3 s exposure time stimulates osteogenesis, which was manifested in a greater number of osteoblasts in the regenerate compared to the control sample without liquid nitrogen. It was observed that increasing the exposure to 6, 9 or 12 s had a destructive effect, to varying degrees. The most severe damage was exerted by a 12 s exposure, which resulted in the formation of osteonecrosis areas. In the samples exposed to 6 and 9 s of cryotherapy, destruction of the cytoplasm of osteocytes and osteoclasts was observed.

AIM: This study was twofold: (i) it aimed to investigate the morphometric changes of three temperature-sensitive nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments at different temperatures, and (ii) to conduct an in vivo real-time analysis of intracanal temperature changes. METHODS: Changes in the shape and length of XP-Endo Shaper, XP-Endo Finisher, and XP-Endo Finisher-R were evaluated in real time whilst heated in a temperature-controlled water bath from 22 to 45°C. Instruments were fixed to a laminated water-resistant 1 mm graph paper attached to a stone block. Instruments were imaged whilst subjected to increasing temperature using a digital camera attached to an operating microscope. From recorded videos, still frames were extracted at 10-s intervals and changes in the length and shape of each instrument were measured and changes were plotted against time. Moreover, the intracanal temperature of distal roots of lower molars was measured in vivo for patients attending the clinic for non-surgical root canal treatments. The temperature was measured using a K-type thermocouple probe inserted into the mid-root level after irrigating the canal with a solution set at room temperature (22°C) or heated to 45°C. The intraoral and intracanal temperatures were recorded using a video camera for 180 s at 5-s intervals to plot the change in the intraoral and intracanal temperature, after both irrigation solution temperatures, with time. RESULTS: The shape transformation of XP-Endo Shaper began at 31.5 ± 2.0°C and reached its optimal transformation at 35.1 ± 1.0°C. For the Finisher and Finisher-R, shape transformations began at 29.2 ± 1.9 and 26.9 ± 2.2°C reaching the optimal transformation at 33.9 ± 1.4 and 32.7 ± 1.7°C, respectively. The average decreases in lengths of XP-Endo Shaper, Finisher, and Finisher-R after full transformation were 0.43 ± 0.23, 1.07 ± 0.22, and 1.15 ± 0.22 mm, respectively. The intracanal temperature reached 32.9 ± 0.8 and 33.2 ± 1.0°C after 3 min of application of irrigation solutions set at 22 or 45°C, respectively. CONCLUSION: The tested instruments exhibited diverse changes in their shapes and lengths at varying temperatures. Despite the temperature of the irrigation solution, the intracanal temperature consistently remained lower than the intracanal temperature once equilibrium was reached. This highlights the importance of considering the temperature of irrigation solution during in vitro testing of endodontic instruments.

Titanium (Ti) is generally considered as an ideal bipolar plate (BPP) material because of its excellent corrosion resistance, good machinability and lightweight nature. However, the easy-passivation property, which leads to increased interfacial contact resistance (ICR) and subsequently decreased cell performance, limits its large-scale commercial application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this paper, we proposed a NiTi alloy prepared by suction casting as a promising bipolar plate for PEMFCs. This NiTi alloy exhibits significantly decreased ICR values (16.8 mΩ cm2 at 1.4 MPa) compared with pure Ti (88.6 mΩ cm2 at 1.4 MPa), along with enhanced corrosion resistance compared with pure nickel (Ni). The superior corrosion resistance of NiTi alloy is accredited to the nobler open circuit potential and corrosion potential, coupled with low corrosion current densities and passive current densities. The improved ICR can be interpreted by the existence of high-proportioned metallic Ni in the passive film, which contributes to the reduced capacitance characteristic of the passive film (compared with Ti) and enhances charge conduction. This work provides a feasible option to ameliorate BPP material that may have desirable corrosion resistance and ICR.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance (CFR) of the newly developed pediatric nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary file systems for root canal preparation of primary teeth. METHODS: Eighty pediatric NiTi rotary file systems files were used in this study, including 20 EasyInSmile X-Baby (25/0.04), 20 Scope miniScope (25/0.04), 20 EndoArt Pedo Gold (25/0.04), and 20 EndoArt Pedo Blue (25/0.04) files. Static CFR tests; performed on a custom-made stainless steel block with an inner diameter of 1.5 mm, an angle of curvature of 60° and a curved artificial canal with a radius of curvature of 5 mm. The test system was filled with distilled water and the temperature was kept constant at 35 ± 1 °C. The files were rotated in the simulated canal until fracture occurred. The number of cycles to failure (NCF) data was recorded, and all the fracture surfaces of the files were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests were used for statistical analysis of the data, and the significance level was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: EndoArt Pedo Blue showed the highest NCF values (2668.10 ± 755.26), while the miniScope showed the lowest NCF values (453.65 ± 72.51), with a statistically significant difference between all the tested file systems (p < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in terms of fractured fragment lengths among all tested files (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The EndoArt Pedo Blue file system showed the best CFR performance among the four file systems specifically designed for primary teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Ni-Ti memory alloys are unusual materials for hard-tissue replacement because of their unique superelasticity, good biocompatibility, high strength, low specific gravity, low magnetism, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance. The current study aims to evaluate its mechanical properties and provide biomechanical basis for the clinical application of the prosthesis. METHODS: Ten adult metacarpophalangeal joint specimens were randomly divided into a prosthesis group (n = 5, underwent metacarpophalangeal joint prosthesis) and a control group (n = 5, underwent sham operation). Firstly, the axial compression strength was tested with BOSE material testing machine to evaluate its biomechanical strength. Secondly, these specimens were tested for strain changes using BOSE material testing machine and GOM non-contact optical strain measurement system to evaluate the stress changes. Thirdly, fatigue test was performed between groups. Lastly, the mechanical wear of the metacarpophalangeal joint prosthesis was tested with ETK5510 material testing machine to study its mechanical properties. RESULTS: Axial compression stiffness in the prosthesis group was greater than that in the control group in terms of 30 ° and 60 ° flexion positions (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between two groups with regards to axial compression stiffness and stress change test (P > 0.05). In the fatigue wear test, the mean mass loss in the prosthesis group's prosthesis was 17.2 mg and 17.619 mm3, respectively. The mean volume wear rate was 0.12%. There was no statistically significant difference in the maximum pull-out force of the metacarpal, phalangeal, and polymer polyethylene pads between the prosthesis group and the control group specimens. CONCLUSIONS: Ni-Ti memory alloy metacarpophalangeal joint prosthesis conforms to the biomechanical characteristics of metacarpophalangeal joints without implants, and the fatigue strength can fully meet the needs of metacarpophalangeal joint activities after joint replacement.

BACKGROUND: The development of endodontic instruments has rapidly advanced, but their impact on endodontic outcome parameters remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to answer the following PICOT questions: In patients with apical periodontitis (P) what is the effectiveness of root canal instrumentation ([Q1] performed with contemporary techniques [I] in comparison with 'traditional' techniques [C]] and ([Q2] performed with contemporary engine-driven NiTi instruments [I] compared with other types of contemporary engine-driven NiTi instruments [with different design and/or technology] [C]) in terms of clinical and patient-related outcomes (O)? METHODS: After PROSPERO protocol registration, a literature search was conducted using Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Grey literature and major journal contents were examined. Two independent reviewers performed the study selection, data extraction and appraisal of included studies. A quantitative meta-analysis was considered, and statistical heterogeneity and overall quality of evidence were assessed. RESULTS: Nine studies were identified showing substantial methodological differences. Five studies addressed PICOT 1 and three PICOT 2, whereas one study aimed both. A random-effects meta-analysis model was considered for the outcome 'radiographic evidence of normal periodontal ligament space or reduction of apical lesion size' (PICOT 1) based on three studies with 332 evaluable participants and showed that contemporary instrumentation was associated with a more favourable outcome (p = .005) compared with root canal preparation with stainless steel instruments (odds ratio = 2.07 [95%-confidence interval = 1.25-3.44]) with no evidence of statistical heterogeneity (I2  = 0%) but low quality of evidence. DISCUSSION: Albeit a few studies fulfilled eligible criteria, no study had a low risk of bias. Compelling evidence indicating significantly different outcome rates using different endodontic instruments when treating teeth with apical periodontitis is lacking. CONCLUSIONS: In terms of healing, the results of the meta-analysis determined the higher effectiveness of root canal instrumentation performed with contemporary techniques in comparison with conventional stainless steel instruments in patients with apical periodontitis followed for a minimum of 1 year with low quality of evidence. No differences could be demonstrated between preparations with traditional stainless steel and contemporary NiTi instruments for other clinical and patient-related outcomes. AIM: To investigate current endodontic practices, adoption of technologies and continuing education attendance within specialist endodontic practice globally and to identify geographic trends. METHODOLOGY: A web-based survey of endodontic association members in Australia, Britain, Canada, Italy, New Zealand and the USA on routine treatment preferences, armamentarium and education attendance was conducted. Chi-squared, independent sample t-tests, Cochran's Q test and McNemar's test were performed. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 543 endodontists or endodontic post-graduate students. Almost all respondents used the dental operating microscope (DOM, 91.3%), engine-driven nickel-titanium instruments (NiTi, 97.6%), electronic apex locators (EAL, 93.0%), cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT, 91.2%) and calcium silicate-based materials (CSBMs, 93.7%). Dental dam was always used by 99.1%. Over half used irrigation adjuncts (81.8%), warm vertical compaction (74.6%) and heat-treated NiTi (60.2%). Geographic comparison between AP (Asia-Pacific, n = 78), AM (Americas, n = 402) and EM (Europe and Middle East, n = 63) was performed. AM and EM preferred single-visit treatment more (p < .001) and used higher sodium hypochlorite concentrations than AP. AM had more access to CBCT in the workplace (86.6%) than AP (65.4%, p < .001) and used CBCT for routine preoperative assessment (39.6%) more than EM (7.3%, p < .001). Almost all of EM used irrigation adjuncts (95.2%), more than AM (78.1%, p = .001). AP used steroid/antibiotic medicaments most (p < .001) and had the highest attendance at continuing education programmes. CONCLUSION: Several endodontic-specific armamentaria have reached almost complete adoption within global specialist endodontic practice, whilst the continued uptake of newer technologies should be followed over time. Some practising philosophies varied significantly across different geographic regions.

OBJECTIVES: This randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effect of two rotaries (ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTUR)), D-Race (DR) + XP-Endo Finisher R (XPFR) and one reciprocating (Reciproc Blue (RB) retreatment techniques on the release of neuropeptides (Substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)), and cytokines (IL-6 and IL-10) in periapical fluid in root canal retreatment of single-rooted teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT05039502), seventy-five patients scheduled for retreatment were randomly divided into 3 groups according to the file system used to remove root canal filling materials (n = 25): PTUR, RB, and DR + XPFR. After reshaping and disinfection of the root canals, periapical fluid samples were taken, and the levels of Substance P, CGRP, IL-6, and IL-10 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and chi-square tests. The level of significance was set as p = 0. 05. RESULTS: All the allocated participants received the intervention and were analyzed. There was no statistically significant difference among groups in terms of gender, age, tooth localization, and the distribution of analgesic use after treatment (p values 0.799, 0.095, 0.637, 1.000, respectively). No statistically significant difference was found in terms of the levels of Substance P, CGRP, and IL-10 among groups (p > .05), except IL-6. CONCLUSIONS: PTUR, RB, and DR + XPFR files have comparable results in the expression of inflammatory mediators. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Retreatment files powered with rotary or reciprocating motion produced similar neuropeptide and cytokine levels in patients.

Prognostic and health management technologies are increasingly important in many fields where reducing maintenance costs is critical. Non-destructive testing techniques and the Internet of Things (IoT) can help create accurate, two-sided digital models of specific monitored objects, enabling predictive analysis and avoiding risky situations. This study focuses on a particular application: monitoring an endodontic file during operation to develop a strategy to prevent breakage. To this end, the authors propose an innovative, non-invasive technique for early fault detection based on digital twins and infrared thermography measurements. They developed a digital twin of a NiTi alloy endodontic file that receives measurement data from the real world and generates the expected thermal map of the object under working conditions. By comparing this virtual image with the real one acquired by an IR camera, the authors were able to identify an anomalous trend and avoid breakage. The technique was calibrated and validated using both a professional IR camera and an innovative low-cost IR scanner previously developed by the authors. By using both devices, they could identify a critical condition at least 11 s before the file broke.

The modern industrial and consumer applications in accordance with the concepts of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things are characterized by autonomy and self-sufficiency. This has led to an increase in the interest for the so-called smart materials, capable of combining the functionalities of sensors, actuators and, in some applications, control systems. An important group of smart materials are shape-memory alloys, among which nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys are the most known. In this article, the influence of phase transformation on the mechanical properties of thin NiTi alloy wires was investigated. During the test, the influence of the heating currents on the displacement and the force generated by the thin NiTi wires were analyzed. The temperature of the wires during heating was measured by a thermographic camera. This study proved the maximum value of the wires' displacement was related to the value of the heating current. During the research, the dependence of the transformation dynamics on the value of the heating currents was also proved. In addition, the influence of the surface inhomogeneity of the thin NiTi alloy wires on the accuracy of the thermographic measurements was analyzed. For the experimental research described in this article, we used the NiTi alloy whose trade name is Flexinol, produced by DYNALLOY (Inc. 2801 McGaw Ave. Irvine, CA, USA).

BACKGROUND: The aim of the current study is to assess the surface roughness of several recent nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary endodontic instruments, namely: Protaper next (PTN); Hyflex CM (CM); Hyflex EDM (EDM); WaveOne gold (WOG); and trunatomy (TN), before and after application of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) irrigant solution. METHODS: In this in vitro study, five recently introduced rotary endodontic instruments of different metallurgical properties and designs were subjected to Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analysis, and then each file was rotated in 5.25% NaOCl for 15 min., with speed and torque according to manufacturer's instructions. The instruments were then subjected to AFM analysis again. The surface roughness average (Sa) parameter was calculated. Data were analyzed by Paired T test, One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant decrease in the surface roughness of all rotary endodontic instruments after immersion in irrigants (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: The new TN and PTN instruments showed the least surface roughness. All tested Ni-Ti rotary endodontic instruments after irrigants exposure showed a varying increase in surface roughness.

OBJECTIVE: To compare force degradation of elastomeric chains and NiTi coil springs in vivo and in vitro, and evaluate the effects of pre-stretched and reused elastomeric chains in the oral cavity during the time. METHODS: In the in vitro groups, 4-unit elastomeric chains and NiTi coil springs with an initial force of 200 g were placed in dry air and artificial saliva. The volunteers wore clear retainers which were used to hold the sample of 4-unit chains, pre-stretched 4-unit chains, and NiTi coil springs with the initial force of 200 g in the in vivo groups. After the first 4 weeks, 4-unit specimens were stretched to 200 g again for another 4 weeks in vivo. The force value and the percentage of force degradation were recorded at each measurement time interval in the in vivo and in vitro groups. RESULTS: The force degradation of elastomeric chains was greatest within the initial 4 hours, followed by a more stable phase after 1 week. The average force degradation of 4-unit elastomeric chains after 4 weeks was in vivo (64.8%) > artificial saliva (55.0%) > dry air (46.42%) (P < 0.05). The force degradation of NiTi coil springs in vivo (15.36%) or in artificial saliva (15.8%) was greater than in dry air (7.6%) (P < 0.05). NiTi coil springs presented a gentler force decay than elastomeric chains during the period (P < 0.05). In vivo, the force degradation of pre-stretched and reused elastomeric chains decreased less than the regular style(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The force degradation of the elastomeric chains and NiTi coil springs varied in different environments. NiTi coil springs presented a gentler force decay than elastomeric chains during the period. Orthodontists should consider the force degradation characteristics of orthodontic accessories in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: It is currently unknown whether rotary file motion affects the best outcome of root canal retreatment. This experimental study compared the efficacy, efficiency, and complications of single-use NiTi rotary files using continuous rotation, reciprocating, and adaptive motions in root canal filling removal in curved root canals. Reciproc blue R25 was used with reciprocating motion (RB), VDW.ROTATE retreatment files with continuous rotation (VR), and ProTaper NEXT X2 with continuous rotation (PTNc) or adaptive motion (PTNa). METHODS: Forty mesial root canals of extracted mandibular first and second molars with an angle of curvature between 20°-40° and a radius of curvature between 5 and 10 mm were collected. The specimens were instrumented and obturated with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer using the continuous wave of condensation technique. The specimens were randomly divided into 4 retreatment groups (n = 10), RB, VR, PTNc, and PTNa. The percentage of root canal filling removal in each group was analyzed using Micro-Computed Tomography (µCT). The motor running time, total time, root canal complication, and instrument complication were recorded and statistically analyzed (p-value < 0.05). RESULTS: The pre-operative root canal curvature and root canal filling volume were comparable among groups. The percentage of root canal filling removal from the whole canal in the PTNc, RB, PTNa, and VR group was 98%, 96%, 95%, and 93%, respectively. A significant difference was observed between the PTNc and VR groups for the whole canal and the apical-third part. The motor running time and total time were significantly different between the groups. Instrument fracture was observed at 40% in the VR and 20% in the PTNa group, but none in the RB and PTNc groups. CONCLUSIONS: The ProTaper NEXT X2 with continuous rotation and RB files can be used with high efficacy and efficiency in curved root canal retreatment. Continuous rotation is more efficacious and efficient than adaptive motion when using the NiTi rotary file. Single file retreatment can be used in small canals with high efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and less time consumption.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) placement in patients with prior radiotherapy (RT) using the Niti-S stent, which is characterized by low radial force, in comparison to patients without prior RT. METHODS: A consecutive series of 83 patients who were treated by SEMS placement using Niti-S stent for severe malignant esophageal obstruction or fistula were enrolled. The adverse event rates and efficacy were retrospectively compared between patients with/without prior RT before SEMS placement (RT group [n = 32] versus non-RT group [n = 51]). RESULTS: The incidence rate of major adverse events in the RT group was 6.3% and was not significantly different from that in the non-RT group (5.9%, p = 0.95). Among the RT group, 84.4% were able to resume oral intake within a median of 2 days. Among the patients with fistula, 78.6% could resume oral intake and survive for 73 days after SEMS placement. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis identified significant factors affecting overall survival to be prior RT (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.96), low performance status (HR: 3.87), and subsequent anticancer treatment after SEMS placement (HR: 0.41). However, compared to the non-RT group, the RT group had received longer duration of anticancer treatment before SEMS placement and a lower rate of subsequent anticancer treatment after SEMS placement. CONCLUSIONS: With the Niti-S stent, the incidence of major adverse events was sufficiently low even for patients after RT. SEMS with low radial force would be an effective palliative treatment option for patients, regardless of prior RT.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of internal fixation of a Ni-Ti arched shape-memory connector in the treatment of distal tibiofibular syndesmosis ligament injury. METHODS: From January 2013 to January 2016, 108 cases of ankle fracture with distal tibiofibular syndesmosis ligament injury in our hospital were selected, and all of them were fixed with ASCs or screw fixation. The functional evaluation and efficacy evaluation were performed according to the Olerud Molander Ankle Score (Omas) and SF-36. At the same time, follow-ups recorded the incidence of postoperative complications: osteoarthritis, superficial infection, symptomatic hard and soft tissue irritation, early removal and poor reduction of internal fixation, and later loss of reduction. RESULTS: In the ASC(Ni-Ti Arched shape-memory Connector) group, the incidence of symptomatic hardware, soft tissue or superficial infection decreased to 2.77%(from 13.8% or 11.1% in SCREW group). The early removal rate(2.77%) of internal fixation was also lower than that of the screw group. While the incidence of osteoarthritis is 13.8% in SCREW group, the incidence of osteoarthritis in the later follow-up was also as low as 1.38% in ASC group. Loss of fracture reduction due to removal of the fixation device for the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis ligament was not observed in the ASC group. With two postoperative scoring systems (OMAS and SF-36), patients in the ASC group significantly get higher score than that in SCREW group. CONCLUSION: The design of the Ni-Ti arched shape-memory connector can be adapted to the irregular anatomical structure of the malleolus and the ability to continue to contract by body temperature. The use of ASCs in fixation of articular ligaments can preserve a slight range of motion, and the results suggest that ASCs can effectively reduce the incidence of fixation looseness, fracture, infection and other complications.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the effects of cyclic loading on the bending moments and the developed stress state of austenitic and R-phase endodontic files through finite element analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mechanical properties of two groups of NiTi wires, austenite and R-phase, were measured in samples at two different conditions: uncycled and cycled. The cycled condition was achieved by subjecting samples of the two groups to 80% of the corresponding fatigue life under rotating bending efforts. The measured mechanical properties were then used in the finite element analysis, where the boundary and loading conditions were set to replicate a standard bending test. RESULTS: The results showed that mechanical cycling leads to decreasing stress levels and bending moments in the simulated files, especially in the austenitic ones. In comparison with austenite, R-phase presented a more stable mechanical behavior during cycling. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that the moment and stress calculated for an instrument under bending can be considerably decreased after some cyclic work. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The fatigue related to the clinical use of an endodontic file decreases the moment (as well as the forces) imposed by the instrument during the shaping of a curved root canal. This decrease is directly related to the type of atomic array present in the alloy.

In this article, the use of Nickel Titanium (NiTi) alloy as a sensor is examined. A cyclic stretching test, that has various elongations (0.5 and 1%), is administered to NiTi wires with various diameters and lengths. It is assumed that the elongation enables an observation of the change in electrical resistance of the NiTi wires, due to martensite reorientation. During the test, the stretching force, the displacement, and the electrical resistance of the NiTi wires are measured. Following the test, the resistance of all the tested samples differed compared to the starting position. Conducted research indicates that NiTi wires are very sensitive to resistance change when they are deformed. A large difference in NiTi electrical resistance was visible in all samples during the first stretching cycle. For longer wires, with a smaller diameter, resistance change was visible during almost all of the stretching cycles. However, the observed changes were very small. Based on the obtained results, it can be justifiably stated that NiTi wires could be used to build deformation sensors, which operate both online and offline. Moreover, NiTi wires with a small diameter could be used to create cyclic loading sensors. Such sensors can be used in self-sensing applications or in structural health monitoring.

Shape memory alloy (SMA) micro cables have a wide potential for attenuation of vibrations and structural health monitoring due to energy dissipation. This work evaluates the effect of SMA thermomechanical coupling during dynamic cycling and the fatigue life of NiTi SMA micro cables submitted to tensile loadings at frequencies from 0.25 Hz to 10 Hz. The thermomechanical coupling was characterized using a previously developed methodology that identifies the self-heating frequency. When dynamically loaded above this frequency, the micro cable response is dominated by the self-heating, stiffening significantly during cycling. Once above the self-heating frequency, structural and functional fatigues of the micro cable were evaluated as a function of the loading frequency for the failure of each individual wire. All tests were performed on a single wire with equal cross-section area for comparison purposes. We observed that the micro cable's functional properties regarding energy dissipation capacity decreased throughout the cycles with increasing frequency. Due to the additional friction between the filaments of the micro cable, this dissipation capacity is superior to that of the single wire. Although its fatigue life is shorter, its delayed failure compared to a single wire makes it a more reliable sensor for structural health monitoring.

Compared to the equiatomic or near-equiatomic NiTinol alloys, Ni-rich NiTi alloys are suitable to be employed in structural applications as they exhibit higher hardness and are dimensionally stable. This research aimed to process two different grades of Ni-rich NiTi alloys, 58NiTi and 60NiTi, from Ni-Ti powder mixtures having about 58 wt.% and 60 wt.% Ni, respectively. This was performed by a laser powder bed fusion technique. At the first stage of this research, the printability of the used powder mixtures was investigated by applying different sets of printing parameters. Two appropriate sets were then selected to print the samples. Microstructural study of the printed parts revealed the existence of inhomogeneity in the microstructures. In addition, depending on the applied set of parameters, some amounts of cracks and pores were also present in the microstructure of these parts. Postprinting hot isostatic pressing procedures, performed at different temperatures, were developed to cause the reaction of phases, homogenize the parts, and possibly eliminate the existing flaws from the samples. Effects of these applied treatments on the microstructure, phase composition, density, dimensional integrity, and hardness of parts were sequentially studied. In essence, 58NiTi and 60NiTi parts having phase compositions complying with those of the equilibrium phase diagram were obtained in this research. However, the mentioned cracks and pores, formed in the microstructure of as-printed parts, could not be fully removed by postprocessing treatments.

BACKGROUND: Recently, various kinds of heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) glide path instruments have been manufactured. This study aimed to investigate design, phase transformation behavior, mechanical properties of TruNatomy Glider (#17/02), V Taper 2H (#14/03), and HyFlex EDM (#15/03) and compare torque/force generated during simulated glide path preparation with them. METHODS: The designs and phase-transformation behaviors of the instruments were examined via scanning electron microscopy (n = 3) and differential scanning calorimetry (n = 2). Their bending (n = 15), torsional (n = 15), and cyclic fatigue resistances (n = 15) were tested. The ultimate strength and distortion angle were obtained from torsional resistance test. The number of cycles to failure (NCF) was calculated from cyclic fatigue resistance test. The preparation of the glide path was simulated using a double-curved artificial canal (n = 15), and the maximum torque and screw-in forces were measured. Data except NCF was compared between brands with one-way ANOVA with Tukey's honestly significant difference test. NCF was analyzed via Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS: TruNatomy Glider had the greatest number of threads. TruNatomy Glider showed progressive taper, while V Taper 2H and HyFlex EDM had constant taper. The austenitic transformation-finish temperatures of all the instruments were above body temperature. V Taper 2H demonstrated significantly lower ultimate strength, higher distortion angle, and a higher number of cycles to failure compared with HyFlex EDM and TruNatomy Glider (p < 0.05). The maximum torque generated during preparing glide path was lowest for V Taper 2H, and the maximum screw-in force was lowest for HyFlex EDM (p < 0.05). TruNatomy Glider generated the highest torque and screw-in force during the apical preparation. CONCLUSIONS: V Taper 2H #14/03 showed superior cyclic fatigue resistance and lower ultimate strength. TruNatomy Glider generated greater clockwise torque and screw-in force during apical preparation. The mechanical properties, torque, and screw-force was affected by design of heat-treated glide path instruments. Cervical pre-flaring prior to glide path instrument is recommended.
