RESUMO

Climate warming enables easier access and operation in the Arctic, fostering industrial and urban development. However, there is no comprehensive pan-Arctic overview of industrial and urban development, which is crucial for the planning of sustainable development of the region. In this study, we utilize satellite-derived artificial light at night (ALAN) data to quantify the hotspots and the development of light-emitting human activity across the Arctic from 1992 to 2013. We find that out of 16.4 million km2 analyzed a total area of 839,710 km2 (5.14%) is lit by human activity with an annual increase of 4.8%. The European Arctic and the oil and gas extraction regions in Russia and Alaska are hotspots of ALAN with up to a third of the land area lit, while the Canadian Arctic remains dark to a large extent. On average, only 15% of lit area in the Arctic contains human settlement, indicating that artificial light is largely attributable to industrial human activity. With this study, we provide a standardized approach to spatially assess human industrial activity across the Arctic, independent from economic data. Our results provide a crucial baseline for sustainable development and conservation planning across the highly vulnerable Arctic region.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the evidence on the relationship between daytime napping and obesity. RECENT FINDINGS: There is concern that napping may be harmful to metabolic health. Prospective studies have shown long time daytime napping (> 1 h) is associated with increased diabetes risk which may be partly associated with obesity. Evidence from numerous cross-sectional studies and meta-analyses of cross-sectional studies have shown that long time napping (> 1 h) but not short time napping is associated with increased risk of obesity, and this is seen worldwide. Inference regarding the nature of association from cross-sectional studies is limited; it is suggested the association is bidirectional. Prospective studies on the association between daytime napping and obesity are few and results unclear. Large longitudinal studies integrating daytime napping duration and night-time sleep behaviour and detailed information on lifestyle influences is needed to help elucidate further the associations of long time napping with obesity.

RESUMO

The differential diagnosis of narcolepsy type 1, a rare, chronic, central disorder of hypersomnolence, is challenging due to overlapping symptoms with other hypersomnolence disorders. While recent years have seen significant growth in our understanding of nocturnal polysomnography narcolepsy type 1 features, there remains a need for improving methods to differentiate narcolepsy type 1 nighttime sleep features from those of individuals without narcolepsy type 1. We aimed to develop a machine learning framework for identifying sleep features to discriminate narcolepsy type 1 from clinical controls, narcolepsy type 2 and idiopathic hypersomnia. The population included polysomnography data from 350 drug-free individuals (114 narcolepsy type 1, 90 narcolepsy type 2, 105 idiopathic hypersomnia, and 41 clinical controls) collected at the National Reference Centers for Narcolepsy in Montpelier, France. Several sets of nocturnal sleep features were explored, as well as the value of time-resolving sleep architecture by analysing sleep per quarter-night. Several patterns of nighttime sleep evolution emerged that differed between narcolepsy type 1, clinical controls, narcolepsy type 2 and idiopathic hypersomnia, with increased nighttime instability observed in patients with narcolepsy type 1. Using machine learning models, we identified rapid eye movement sleep onset as the best single polysomnography feature to distinguish narcolepsy type 1 from controls, narcolepsy type 2 and idiopathic hypersomnia. By combining multiple feature sets capturing different aspects of sleep across quarter-night periods, we were able to further improve between-group discrimination and could identify the most discriminative sleep features. Our results highlight salient polysomnography features and the relevance of assessing their time-dependent changes during sleep that could aid diagnosis and measure the impact of novel therapeutics in future clinical trials.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) contributed significantly to the decline in malaria since 2000. Their protective efficacy depends not only on access, use, and net integrity, but also location of people within the home environment and mosquito biting profiles. Anopheline mosquito biting and human location data were integrated to identify potential gaps in protection and better understand malaria transmission dynamics in Busia County, western Kenya. METHODS: Direct observation of human activities and human landing catches (HLC) were performed hourly between 1700 to 0700 h. Household members were recorded as home or away; and, if at home, as indoors/outdoors, awake/asleep, and under a net or not. Aggregated data was analysed by weighting hourly anopheline biting activity with human location. Standard indicators of human-vector interaction were calculated using a Microsoft Excel template. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between indoor and outdoor biting for Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) (RR = 0.82; 95% CI 0.65-1.03); significantly fewer Anopheles funestus were captured outdoors than indoors (RR = 0.41; 95% CI 0.25-0.66). Biting peaked before dawn and extended into early morning hours when people began to awake and perform routine activities, between 0400-0700 h for An. gambiae and 0300-0700 h for An. funestus. The study population away from home peaked at 1700-1800 h (58%), gradually decreased and remained constant at 10% throughout the night, before rising again to 40% by 0600-0700 h. When accounting for resident location, nearly all bites within the peri-domestic space (defined as inside household structures and surrounding outdoor spaces) occurred indoors for unprotected people (98%). Using an ITN while sleeping was estimated to prevent 79% and 82% of bites for An. gambiae and An. funestus, respectively. For an ITN user, most remaining exposure to bites occurred indoors in the hours before bed and early morning. CONCLUSION: While use of an ITN was estimated to prevent most vector bites in this context, results suggest gaps in protection, particularly in the early hours of the morning when biting peaks and many people are awake and active. Assessment of additional human exposure points, including outside of the peri-domestic setting, are needed to guide supplementary interventions for transmission reduction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Knowledge regarding the health impacts of daily eating frequency (DEF) and nighttime fasting duration (NFD) on mortality is very limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether DEF and NFD are associated with CVD and all-cause mortality. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of a nationally representative sample from the United States, including 30,464 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2014. Using 24-h dietary recall, DEF was assessed by the number of eating episodes, and NFD was calculated by the first and last eating time across a day. Death information was obtained from the National Death Index up to 2019. Weighted Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess survival relationships of DEF and NFD with mortality. RESULTS: During 307,686 person-years of follow-up, 4560 deaths occurred, including 1824 CVD cases. After adjustment for confounders, compared to DEF at 4-6 times, participants whose DEF was less than 3 times had greater CVD [hazard-ratio (HR) = 1.33, 95% confidence-interval (CI): 1.06-1.67] and all-cause (HR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.01-1.33) mortality risks. Furthermore, compared to NFD of 10 to 11 h, participants whose NFD was shorter than 10 h had HRs of 1.30 (95% CI: 1.08-1.55) for CVD mortality and 1.23 (95% CI: 1.08-1.39) for all-cause mortality. NFD longer than 14 h was also related to CVD mortality (HR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.12-1.67) and all-cause mortality (HR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.19-1.54). Similar results for the association of NFD and DEF with heart-specific and stroke-specific mortality were observed. CONCLUSION: This study found that DEF less than 3 times and NFD shorter than 10 h or longer than 14 h were independently associated with greater cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Information on the influences of daily eating frequency (DEF) and nighttime fasting duration (NFD) on biological aging is minimal. Our study investigated the potential associations of DEF and NFD with accelerated aging. METHODS: Out of 24212 participants in NHANES 2003-2010 and 2015-2018, 4 predicted age metrics [homeostatic dysregulation (HD), Klemera-Doubal method (KDM), phenoAge (PA), and allostatic load (AL)] were computed based on 12 blood chemistry parameters. Utilizing 24-h dietary recall, DEF was measured by the frequency of eating occurrences, while NFD was determined by assessing the timing of the initial and final meals throughout the day. Weighted multivariate linear regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were utilized to examine the associations. RESULTS: Compared to DEF of ≤ 3.0 times, subjects with DEF ≥ 4.6 times demonstrated lower KDM residual [ß: -0.57, 95% confidence-interval (CI): (-0.97, -0.17)] and PA residual [ß: -0.47, 95% CI: (-0.69, -0.25)]. In comparison to NFD between 10.1 and 12.0 h, individuals with NFD ≤ 10.0 h were at higher HD [ß: 0.03, 95% CI: (0.01, 0.04)], KDM residual [ß: 0.34, 95% CI: (0.05, 0.63)], and PA residual [ß: 0.38, 95% CI: (0.18, 0.57)]. Likewise, those with NFD ≥ 14.1 h also had higher HD [ß: 0.02, 95% CI: (0.01, 0.04)] and KDM residual [ß: 0.33, 95% CI: (0.03, 0.62)]. The results were confirmed by the dose-response relationships of DEF and NFD with predicted age metrics. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and globulin (Glo) were acknowledged as implicated in and mediating the relationships. CONCLUSIONS: DEF below 3.0 times and NFD less than 10.0 or more than 14.1 h were independently associated with higher predicted age metrics.

RESUMO

Rape (Brassica napus L.; AACC) is an important oil-bearing crop worldwide. Temperature significantly affects the production of oil crops; however, the mechanisms underlying temperature-promoted oil biosynthesis remain largely unknown. In this study, we found that a temperature-sensitive cultivar (O) could accumulate higher seed oil content under low nighttime temperatures (LNT,13°C) compared with a temperature-insensitive cultivar (S). We performed an in-depth transcriptome analysis of seeds from both cultivars grown under different nighttime temperatures. We found that low nighttime temperatures induced significant changes in the transcription patterns in the seeds of both cultivars. In contrast, the expression of genes associated with fatty acid and lipid pathways was higher in the O cultivar than in the S cultivar under low nighttime temperatures. Among these genes, we identified 14 genes associated with oil production, especially BnLPP and ACAA1, which were remarkably upregulated in the O cultivar in response to low nighttime temperatures compared to S. Further, a WGCNA analysis and qRT-PCR verification revealed that these genes were mainly regulated by five transcription factors, WRKY20, MYB86, bHLH144, bHLH95, and NAC12, whose expression was also increased in O compared to S under LNT. These results allowed the elucidation of the probable molecular mechanism of oil accumulation under LNT conditions in the O cultivar. Subsequent biochemical assays verified that BnMYB86 transcriptionally activated BnLPP expression, contributing to oil accumulation. Meanwhile, at LNT, the expression levels of these genes in the O plants were higher than at high nighttime temperatures, DEGs (SUT, PGK, PK, GPDH, ACCase, SAD, KAS II, LACS, FAD2, FAD3, KCS, KAR, ECR, GPAT, LPAAT, PAP, DGAT, STERO) related to lipid biosynthesis were also upregulated, most of which are used in oil accumulation.

RESUMO

Nighttime organ transplantation aims to decrease cold ischemia duration, yet conflicting data exists on its impact on graft function and perioperative complications. This multicenter TRANSPLANT'AFUF study including 2,854 patients, transplanted between 1 January 2011, and 31 December 2022, investigated nighttime kidney transplantation's impact (8:00 p.m.-8:00 a.m.) versus daytime (8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.) on surgical complications and graft survival. Overall, 2043 patients (71.6%) underwent daytime graft, while 811 (28.4%) underwent nighttime graft. No impact was observed of timing of graft surgery on graft survival with a median survival of 98 months and 132 months for daytime and nightime grafting, respectively (p = 0.1749). Moreover, no impact was observed on early surgical complications (Clavien I-II = 20.95% for DG and 20.10% for NG; Clavien III-IV-V = 15.42% for DG and 12.94% for NG; p = 0.0889) and late complications (>30 days) (Clavien I-II = 6.80% for DG and 5.67% for NG; Clavien III-IV-V = 12.78% for DG and 12.82% for NG; p = 0.2444). Noteworthy, we found a significant increase in Maastricht 3 donors' rates in nighttime transplantation (5.53% DG vs. 21.45% NG; p < 0.0001). In conclusion, nighttime kidney transplantation did not impact early/late surgical complications nor graft survival.

RESUMO

The health effects of urbanization are controversial. The association between urbanization and reversible subclinical risks of cardiovascular diseases (e.g., electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities) has rarely been studied. This study aimed to assess the association between urbanization and ECG abnormalities in China based on the China National Stroke Screening Survey (CNSSS). We used changes in the satellite-measured impervious surfaces rate and nighttime light data to assess the level of urbanization. Every interquartile increment in the impervious surfaces rate or nighttime light was related to a decreased risk of ECG abnormalities, with odds ratios of 0.894 (95% CI, 0.869-0.920) or 0.809 (95% CI, 0.772-0.847), respectively. And we observed a U-shaped nonlinear exposure-response relationship curve between the impervious surfaces rate and ECG abnormalities. In conclusion, the current average level of urbanization among the studied Chinese adults remains a beneficial factor for reducing cardiovascular risks.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Appendicitis is one of the most common acute surgical conditions globally. However, the association between nighttime appendectomy and patients' morbidity and mortality is unclear. This study aims to compare outcomes following nighttime versus daytime appendectomy. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases up to March 26, 2024 (updated on July 1, 2024) were searched. The primary outcomes were postoperative complications and mortality. Secondary outcomes included intraoperative complications, reoperation, readmission, conversion to laparotomy, hospital stay and operation time. Mean difference (MD) or odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS: Fifteen studies totaling 33,596 patients were included. There were no differences between nighttime and daytime appendectomy for rates of overall postoperative complications (OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.87, 1.00, 14 studies), mortality (OR 1.70, 95% CI 0.37, 7.88, 7 studies), intraoperative complications (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.08, 9.86; 2 studies), reoperation (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.06, 2.55; 3 studies) and readmission (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.65, 1.13; I2 = 0%, 5 studies). However, the conversion to laparotomy risks (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.12, 3.29; 6 studies) among patients who underwent appendectomy during nighttime was significantly elevated compared to daytime. CONCLUSIONS: There was no increased risk or difference in postoperative mortality and complication rates associated with nighttime compared with daytime appendectomy. However, future studies should assess the reasons for higher conversion rates during the night.

RESUMO

The elements that render anaesthesia a captivating profession can also foster stress and fatigue. Professionals considering anaesthesia as a career choice should have a comprehensive understanding of the negative consequences of fatigue and its implications for clinical performance and of the available preventive measures. Available evidence suggests that factors unrelated to patient characteristics or condition can affect clinical outcomes where anaesthetists are involved. Workload, nighttime work, and fatigue are persistent issues in anaesthesia and are perceived as presenting greater perioperative risks to patients. Fatigue seems to negatively affect both physical and mental health of anaesthetists. Existing evidence justifies specific interventions by institutions, stakeholders, and scientific societies to address the effects of anaesthetist fatigue. This narrative review summarises current knowledge regarding the effects of fatigue on anaesthetist well-being and patient safety, and discusses potential preventive solutions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Outdoor nighttime light (NTL) is a potential anthropogenic stressor in urban settings. While ecological studies have identified outdoor NTL exposure disparities, uncertainties remain about disparities in individual exposure levels, particularly in Europe. AIM: To assess whether some populations are disproportionately affected by outdoor NTL at their residences in urban Bulgaria. METHODS: We analyzed 2023 data from a representative cross-sectional survey of 4,270 adults from the five largest Bulgarian cities. Respondents' annual exposures to outdoor artificial nighttime luminance were measured using satellite imagery and assigned at their places of residence. We calculated the Gini coefficient as a descriptive NTL inequality measure. Associations between respondents' NTL exposure levels and sociodemographic characteristics were assessed by estimating quantile mixed regression models. Stratified regressions were fitted by gender and for each city. RESULTS: We found moderate distributive NTL inequalities, as indicated by a 0.214 Gini coefficient. Regression analyses found associations between greater NTL exposure and higher educational attainment. Respondents with incomes perceived as moderate experienced less NTL exposure at the 0.5 and 0.8 quantiles, while unemployed respondents experienced lower exposure at the 0.2 and 0.5 quantiles. We observed null associations for the elderly and non-Bulgarian ethnicities. Regardless of the quantile, greater population density was associated with higher NTL levels. Stratification by sex did not yield substantial differences in the associations. We observed notable city-specific heterogeneities in the associations, with differences in the magnitudes and directions of the associations and the NTL quantiles. CONCLUSIONS: NTL exposures appeared to embody an environmental injustice dimension in Bulgaria. Our findings suggest that some sociodemographic populations experience higher exposure levels to NTL; however, those are not necessarily the underprivileged or marginalized. Identifying populations with high exposure levels is critical to influencing lighting policies to ease related health implications.

RESUMO

In this study, we developed two online monitors for total organic carbon (TOC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) measurements in fine (dp < 2.5µm) and coarse (2.5µm < dp < 10µm) particulate matter (PM), respectively. Their performance has been evaluated in laboratory and field tests to demonstrate the feasibility of using these monitors to measure near real-time concentrations, with consideration of their potential for being employed in long-term measurements. The fine PM collection setup was equipped with a versatile aerosol concentration enrichment system (VACES) connected to an aerosol-into-liquid-sampler (AILS), whereas two virtual impactors (VIs) in tandem with a modified BioSampler were used to collect coarse PM. These particle collection setups were in tandem with a Sievers M9 TOC analyzer to read TOC and WSOC concentrations in aqueous samples hourly. The average hourly TOC concentration measured by our developed monitors in fine and coarse PM were 5.17 ± 2.41 and 0.92 ± 0.29 µg/m3, respectively. In addition, our TOC readings showed good agreement and were comparable with those quantified using Sunset Lab EC/OC analyzer operating in parallel as a reference. Furthermore, we conducted field tests to produce diurnal profiles of fine PM-bound WSOC, which can show the effects of ambient temperature on maximum values in the nighttime chemistry of the winter, as well as on increased photochemical activities in afternoon peaks during the summer. According to our experimental campaign, WSOC mean values during the study period (3.07 µg/m3 for the winter and 2.7 µg/m3 for the summer) were in a comparable range with those of earlier studies in Los Angeles. Overall, our results corroborate the performance of our developed monitors in near real-time measurements of TOC and WSOC, which can be employed for future source apportionment studies in Los Angeles and other areas, aiding in understanding the health impacts of different pollution sources.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests outcomes for cardiac arrest in adults are worse during nights and weekends when compared with daytime and weekdays. Similar research has not yet been carried out in the infant setting. METHODS: We examined the National Emergency Medical Services Information System (NEMSIS), a database containing millions of emergency medical services (EMS) runs in the United States. Inclusion criteria were infant out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (patients <1 years old) taking place prior to EMS arrival between January 2021 and December 2022 where EMS documented whether return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was achieved. Cardiac arrests were classified as occurring during either the day (defined as 0800-1959) or the night (defined as 2000-0759) and weekends (Saturday/Sunday) or weekdays (Monday-Friday). Rates of ROSC achievement were compared. RESULTS: A total of 8549 infant cardiac arrests met inclusion criteria: 5074 (59.4%) took place during daytime compared with 3475 (40.6%) during nighttime, and 5989 (70.1%) arrests occurred on weekdays compared with 2560 (29.9%) on weekends. Rates of ROSC achievement were significantly lower on weekends versus weekdays (16.8% vs. 14.1%; p = 0.00097). A difference in ROSC rates when comparing daytime and nighttime was seen, but this difference was not statistically significant (16.4% vs. 15.3%; p = 0.08076). CONCLUSION: ROSC achievement rates for infant out-of-hospital cardiac arrest are significantly lower on weekends when compared with weekdays. Further study and quality improvement work is needed to better understand this.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Physical exercise has the potential to mitigate addictive behaviors and relevant health issues. However, the nighttime exercise has not been studied regarding this research topic. This study aims to explore the association between nocturnal physical exercise and problematic smartphone use before sleep, as well as related health issues. METHODS: To explore the association between nighttime physical exercise and problematic smartphone use before sleep as well as related health issues, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 1,334 college students. Their daily exercise behaviors (including timeframe, rationale, frequency, and duration), smartphone use before sleep, sleep quality, smartphone addiction, anxiety, and depression were measured by questionnaires. The associations were assessed using generalized linear models. RESULTS: Our findings indicate that nearly 70% of participants chose to perform exercise at nighttime. Among these individuals who exercised at nighttime, the frequency and duration of nighttime exercise were significantly associated with decreased probabilities of smartphone use before sleep. Additionally, the frequency and duration of nighttime exercise were associated with lower levels of smartphone addiction and anxiety disorders. CONCLUSION: Nighttime Exercise behaviors can effectively reduce sleep delays caused by problematic smartphone use before bedtime. These findings contribute to understanding the potential effects of nighttime exercise on problematic smartphone use and relevant health issues. Future research should employ more precise methodologies to examine these associations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between midday nap time, nighttime sleep duration, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in Chinese older adults and determine the recommended sleep duration to provide a scientific basis for preventing and managing MCI in this population. METHODS: Utilizing the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study database, the demographic data, health status, and lifestyle information of the study participants were collected. A total of 5,314 valid samples were included in the analysis. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline plots were employed to explore the relationship between sleep patterns and MCI. RESULTS: In the cross-sectional analysis, a linear relationship was observed between midday nap duration and MCI among Chinese elderly. The probability of MCI was lowest among those who napped for less than 30 min at noon. Compared with individuals who napped for30-90 min, those who did not nap were more likely to have MCI (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.05-1.60). Older adults with napping duration < 30 min (OR = 0.73, 95% CI:0.56-0.95) also exhibited lower probability of MCI when compared those without napping habit, Nighttime sleep duration exhibited a U-shaped relationship with MCI. Individuals with less than approximately 6 h of nighttime sleep showed a gradual decrease in the probability of MCI with increasing sleep duration, whereas those with more than 7.5 h demonstrated an increase in the probability of MCI with longer sleep duration. Older adults who slept less than 6 h at night (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.01 ~ 1.46) or more than 8 h (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.35-2.33) were more likely to develop MCI compared with those who slept 6 to 8 h. CONCLUSION: After controlling for potential confounding variables, both nighttime sleep duration and midday nap duration exhibited a nonlinear "U"-shaped relationship with MCI among the elderly. The probability of depression was lower with a nap duration of approximately 60 min, and the optimal nighttime sleep duration was 6-8 h, with around 7 h providing the greatest cognitive benefits.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to assess the changes in flexibility during night-time bracing in skeletally immature adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with curves in the surgical range. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included a consecutive cohort of 89 AIS patients with curves ≥ 45° and an estimated growth potential. All patients were eventually treated with fusion surgery, and all patients had side-bending radiographs prior to both bracing and surgery. Curves were classified as structural or non-structural curves according to Lenke at both timepoints. RESULTS: The main curve progressed by a mean of 12 ± 10° and the secondary curve by 8 ± 8°. Flexibility of the main curve decreased from 50 ± 19% to 44 ± 19% (p = 0.001) and the underlying curve from 85 ± 21% to 77 ± 22% (p = 0.005). In 69 patients (79%), the Lenke category did not progress during bracing. In 14 patients (15%), the progression in Lenke type occurred in the thoracic region (i.e., Lenke type 1 to type 2), while six patients (7%) progressed in the lumbar region (i.e., type 1 to type 3). In the 69 patients that did not progress, we found that the last touched vertebra moved distally by one or two levels in 26 patients. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to describe that curve flexibility decreases during bracing in severe AIS. However, this had only a modest impact on the surgical strategy. Bracing as a holding strategy can be applied, but the risk of losing flexibility in the lumbar spine should be outweighed against the risks of premature fusion surgery.

RESUMO

Economic inequality is notoriously difficult to quantify as reliable data on household incomes are missing for most of the world. Here, we show that a proxy for inequality based on remotely sensed nighttime light data may help fill this gap. Individual households cannot be remotely sensed. However, as households tend to segregate into richer and poorer neighborhoods, the correlation between light emission and economic thriving shown in earlier studies suggests that spatial variance of remotely sensed light per person might carry a signal of economic inequality. To test this hypothesis, we quantified Gini coefficients of the spatial variation in average nighttime light emitted per person. We found a significant relationship between the resulting light-based inequality indicator and existing estimates of net income inequality. This correlation between light-based Gini coefficients and traditional estimates exists not only across countries, but also on a smaller spatial scale comparing the 50 states within the United States. The remotely sensed character makes it possible to produce high-resolution global maps of estimated inequality. The inequality proxy is entirely independent from traditional estimates as it is based on observed light emission rather than self-reported household incomes. Both are imperfect estimates of true inequality. However, their independent nature implies that the light-based proxy could be used to constrain uncertainty in traditional estimates. More importantly, the light-based Gini maps may provide an estimate of inequality where previously no data were available at all.

RESUMO

In rice, a small increase in nighttime temperature reduces grain yield and quality. How warm nighttime temperatures (WNT) produce these detrimental effects is not well understood, especially in field conditions where the typical day-to-night temperature fluctuation exceeds the mild increase in nighttime temperature. We observed genome-wide disruption of gene expression timing during the reproductive phase in field-grown rice panicles acclimated to 2 to 3 °C WNT. Transcripts previously identified as rhythmically expressed with a 24-h period and circadian-regulated transcripts were more sensitive to WNT than were nonrhythmic transcripts. The system-wide perturbations in transcript levels suggest that WNT disrupt the tight temporal coordination between internal molecular events and the environment, resulting in reduced productivity. We identified transcriptional regulators whose predicted targets are enriched for sensitivity to WNT. The affected transcripts and candidate regulators identified through our network analysis explain molecular mechanisms driving sensitivity to WNT and identify candidates that can be targeted to enhance tolerance to WNT.

RESUMO

The gut microbiome has been reported to be associated with nighttime light (NTL) exposure and temperament. However, the specific role of infant gut microbiome plays in NTL exposure and temperament is unclear. This study investigated the potential mediating role of infants' gut microbiome in correlations between NTL exposure and temperament. Demographic information, stool samples, and temperament scores were collected from 40 infants. Temperament was evaluated using the Infants Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (IBQ-R). The gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Cumulative and lagged effects of NTL exposure were calculated based on residential address (NTLpoint) and a concentric 1 km radius buffer zone around the address (NTL1000m), respectively. Mediation models were utilized for assessing the mediating effects of the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome of infants with higher fear scores was characterized by a higher abundance of Akkermansia and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 and a lower abundance of Bacteroides. Mediation models indicated Akkermansia played a full mediating role in associations between NTLpoint, NTL1000m and fear in specific time periods. Genus Akkermansia explained 24.46% and 33.50% of associations between fear and cumulative exposure to NTLpoint and NTL1000m, respectively. This study provides evidence for the mediating role of Akkermansia between NTL exposure and fear. However, further experimental is required to elucidate the mechanisms through which the gut microbiome mediates between NTL exposure and temperament in infants.
