This paper examines methodologies for monitoring energy consumption and operational parameters of an industrial assembly line, with a particular emphasis on the utilization of virtual tools, augmented reality, and real-time data visualization. The research examines the integration of an interface and the implementation of a data acquisition system, employing augmented reality to facilitate interaction with the collected data. The proposed system employs the Node-RED interface to facilitate the establishment of connections between constituent elements. The data is stored in a database, which provides support for decision-making in the analysis of energy consumption and operational parameters of the industrial assembly line. The results demonstrate that the solution is effective in enhancing energy resource management, identifying inefficiencies, and optimizing the performance of industrial equipment. The findings indicate that the implementation of such a system can markedly enhance the industrial process.

In developing nations, outdated technologies and sulfur-rich heavy fossil fuel usage are major contributors to air pollution, affecting urban air quality and public health. In addition, the limited resources hinder the adoption of advanced monitoring systems crucial for informed public health policies. This study addresses this challenge by introducing an affordable internet of things (IoT) monitoring system capable of tracking atmospheric pollutants and meteorological parameters. The IoT platform combines a Bresser 5-in-1 weather station with a previously developed air quality monitoring device equipped with Alphasense gas sensors. Utilizing MQTT, Node-RED, InfluxDB, and Grafana, a Raspberry Pi collects, processes, and visualizes the data it receives from the measuring device by LoRa. To validate system performance, a 15-day field campaign was conducted in Santa Clara, Cuba, using a Libelium Smart Environment Pro as a reference. The system, with a development cost several times lower than Libelium and measuring a greater number of variables, provided reliable data to address air quality issues and support health-related decision making, overcoming resource and budget constraints. The results showed that the IoT architecture has the capacity to process measurements in tropical conditions. The meteorological data provide deeper insights into events of poorer air quality.

Design and implementation of an open-source-based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for a community solar-powered reverse osmosis are presented in this paper. A typical SCADA system available on the market is proprietary and has a high initial and maintenance cost. Aside from that, there is no SCADA system with an alert system available to give users updates and status information concerning the system. The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive SCADA design that takes advantage of open-source technology to address the world's most pressing problem, access to clean water. The designed reverse Osmosis system also uses renewable energy-based power sources. In this system, all data is stored and analyzed locally, which ensures the data is secure and allows the user to make data-driven decisions based on the collected data. Among the main components of this system are the field instrument devices (FIDs), the remote terminal unit (RTU), the main terminal units (MTUs), the web-based programming software, and the data analytics software. The Node-Red programming and dashboard tool, Grafana for data analytics, and InfluxDB for database management run on the main terminal unit having Debian operating system. Data is transmitted from the FIDs to the RTU, which then redirects it to the MTU via serial communication. Node-Red displays the data processed by the MTU on its dashboard as well, as the data is stored locally on the MTU and is displayed by means of Grafana, which is also installed on the same MTU. Through the Node-Red dashboard, the system is controlled, and notifications are sent to the community.

The increasing isolation of the elderly both in their own homes and in care homes has made the problem of caring for elderly people who live alone an urgent priority. This article presents a proposed design for a heterogeneous multirobot system consisting of (i) a small mobile robot to monitor the well-being of elderly people who live alone and suggest activities to keep them positive and active and (ii) a domestic mobile manipulating robot that helps to perform household tasks. The entire system is integrated in an automated home environment (AAL), which also includes a set of low-cost automation sensors, a medical monitoring bracelet and an Android application to propose emotional coaching activities to the person who lives alone. The heterogeneous system uses ROS, IoT technologies, such as Node-RED, and the Home Assistant Platform. Both platforms with the home automation system have been tested over a long period of time and integrated in a real test environment, with good results. The semantic segmentation of the navigation and planning environment in the mobile manipulator for navigation and movement in the manipulation area facilitated the tasks of the later planners. Results about the interactions of users with the applications are presented and the use of artificial intelligence to predict mood is discussed. The experiments support the conclusion that the assistance robot correctly proposes activities, such as calling a relative, exercising, etc., during the day, according to the user's detected emotional state, making this is an innovative proposal aimed at empowering the elderly so that they can be autonomous in their homes and have a good quality of life.

Inter-robot communication and high computational power are challenging issues for deploying indoor mobile robot applications with sensor data processing. Thus, this paper presents an efficient cloud-based multirobot framework with inter-robot communication and high computational power to deploy autonomous mobile robots for indoor applications. Deployment of usable indoor service robots requires uninterrupted movement and enhanced robot vision with a robust classification of objects and obstacles using vision sensor data in the indoor environment. However, state-of-the-art methods face degraded indoor object and obstacle recognition for multiobject vision frames and unknown objects in complex and dynamic environments. From these points of view, this paper proposes a new object segmentation model to separate objects from a multiobject robotic view-frame. In addition, we present a support vector data description (SVDD)-based one-class support vector machine for detecting unknown objects in an outlier detection fashion for the classification model. A cloud-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model with a SoftMax classifier is used for training and identification of objects in the environment, and an incremental learning method is introduced for adding unknown objects to the robot knowledge. A cloud-robot architecture is implemented using a Node-RED environment to validate the proposed model. A benchmarked object image dataset from an open resource repository and images captured from the lab environment were used to train the models. The proposed model showed good object detection and identification results. The performance of the model was compared with three state-of-the-art models and was found to outperform them. Moreover, the usability of the proposed system was enhanced by the unknown object detection, incremental learning, and cloud-based framework.

Smart meters are of the basic elements in the so-called Smart Grid. These devices, connected to the Internet, keep bidirectional communication with other devices in the Smart Grid structure to allow remote readings and maintenance. As any other device connected to a network, smart meters become vulnerable to attacks with different purposes, like stealing data or altering readings. Nowadays, it is becoming more and more popular to buy and plug-and-play smart meters, additionally to those installed by the energy providers, to directly monitor the energy consumption at home. This option inherently entails security risks that are under the responsibility of householders. In this paper, we focus on an open solution based on Smartpi 2.0 devices with two purposes. On the one hand, we propose a network configuration and different data flows to exchange data (energy readings) in the home. These flows are designed to support collaborative among the devices in order to prevent external attacks and attempts of corrupting the data. On the other hand, we check the vulnerability by performing two kind of attacks (denial of service and stealing and changing data by using a malware). We conclude that, as expected, these devices are vulnerable to these attacks, but we provide mechanisms to detect both of them and to solve, by applying cooperation techniques.

Smart Cities are approaching the Internet of Things (IoT) World. Most of the first-generation Smart City solutions are based on Extract Transform Load (ETL); processes and languages that mainly support pull protocols for data gathering. IoT solutions are moving forward to event-driven processes using push protocols. Thus, the concept of IoT applications has turned out to be widespread; but it was initially "implemented" with ETL; rule-based solutions; and finally; with true data flows. In this paper, these aspects are reviewed, highlighting the requirements for smart city IoT applications and in particular, the ones that implement a set of specific MicroServices for IoT Applications in Smart City contexts. Moreover; our experience has allowed us to implement a suite of MicroServices for Node-RED; which has allowed for the creation of a wide range of new IoT applications for smart cities that includes dashboards, IoT Devices, data analytics, discovery, etc., as well as a corresponding Life Cycle. The proposed solution has been validated against a large number of IoT applications, as it can be verified by accessing the https://www.Snap4City.org portal; while only three of them have been described in the paper. In addition, the reported solution assessment has been carried out by a number of smart city experts. The work has been developed in the framework of the Select4Cities PCP (PreCommercial Procurement), funded by the European Commission as Snap4City platform.

PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) based data collection is integral to industrial automation and data acquisition processes. The pipeline - between the device and the database - is a complex system with many components and often causes some time delay, due to the synchronization and the applied hardware and software components. This delay can also lead to data loss on the database site. In this study, we aimed to examine this problem connected to the synchronized behavior of four counter networks within the TIA software for PLCs, particularly focusing on the implications of a 1 Hz (Hz) clock frequency on counter synchronization. Meticulous experiments were conducted and the integration of Node-RED, as an instrumental tool in industrial automation, facilitated counter-behavior monitoring. Recorded values of counter and timestamps were meticulously stored in four separate databases (MSSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and Apache Cassandra) for comprehensive data analysis. Throughout the experiments, inconsistencies in the counter values were encountered, leading to the discovery of missing values that varied across the ten tests. To detect the reason, a unique delay calculation method was developed. According to our results, we were able to do post-synchronization with millisecond-level accuracy. It can help reveal the missing values that depend on the Node-RED and the PLC cycle time differences.

By 2050, the world's population is predicted to reach over 9 billion, which requires 70% increased production in agriculture and food industries to meet demand. This presents a significant challenge for the agri-food sector in all aspects. Agro-industrial wastes are rich in bioactive substances and other medicinal properties. They can be used as a different source for manufacturing products like biogas, biofuels, mushrooms, and tempeh, the primary ingredients in various studies and businesses. Increased importance is placed on resource recovery, recycling, and reusing (RRR) any waste using advanced technology like IoT and artificial intelligence. AI algorithms offer alternate, creative methods for managing agro-industrial waste management (AIWM). There are contradictions and a need to understand how AI technologies work regarding their application to AIWM. This research studies the application of AI-based technology for the various areas of AIWM. The current work aims to discover AI-based models for forecasting the generation and recycling of AIWM waste. Research shows that agro-industrial waste generation has increased worldwide. Infrastructure needs to be upgraded and improved by adapting AI technology to maintain a balance between socioeconomic structures. The study focused on AI's social and economic impacts and the benefits, challenges, and future work in AIWM. The present research will increase recycling and reproduction with a balance of cost, efficiency, and human resources consumption in agro-industrial waste management.

Studies suggest non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) as a potential therapeutic option for various pathological conditions, such as epilepsy and depression. Exhalation-controlled taVNS, which synchronizes stimulation with internal body rhythms, holds promise for enhanced neuromodulation, but there is no closed-loop system in the literature capable of performing such integration in real time. In this context, the objective was to develop real-time signal processing techniques and an integrated closed-loop device with sensors to acquire physiological data. After a conditioning stage, the signal is processed and delivers synchronized electrical stimulation during the patient's expiratory phase. Additional modules were designed for processing, software-controlled selectors, remote and autonomous operation, improved analysis, and graphical visualization. The signal processing method effectively extracted respiratory cycles and successfully attenuated signal noise. Heart rate variability was assessed in real time, using linear statistical evaluation. The prototype feedback stimulator device was physically constructed. Respiratory peak detection achieved an accuracy of 90%, and the real-time processing resulted in a small delay of up to 150 ms in the detection of the expiratory phase. Thus, preliminary results show promising accuracy, indicating the need for additional tests to optimize real-time processing and the application of the prototype in clinical studies.

The core of the research focuses on analyzing the discharge characteristic of a lithium NMC battery in an autonomous mobile robot, which can be used as a model to predict its future states depending on the amount of missions queued. In the presented practical example, an autonomous mobile robot is used for in-house transportation, where its missions are queued or delegated to other robots in the system depending on the robots' predicted state of charge. The system with the implemented models has been tested in three scenarios, simulating real-life use cases, and has been examined in the context of the number of missions executed in total. The main finding of the research is that the battery discharge characteristic stays consistent regardless of the mission type or length, making it usable as a model for the predictive monitoring system, which allows for detection of obstruction of the default shortest paths for the programmed missions. The model is used to aid the maintenance department with information on any anomalies detected in the robot's path or the behavior of the battery, making the transportation process safer and more efficient by alerting the employees to take action or delegate the excessive tasks to other robots.

Patients' remote monitoring becomes even more crucial due to the spreading of the COVID-19 disease. Hospitals cannot accommodate all the patients who need to be taken care. Hence, tele-medicine or, as also named, tele-health, remains the only means available to keep the situation under control. In particular, it is important to monitor the patients who are subject to the home quarantine period. The reason is twofold: (i) their live status and symptoms must be controlled; (ii) they must not leave the permitted area during the quarantine period. To this end, the paper defines a set of rules and processes based on the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, which enable the integration of different devices, in order to monitor the required parameters related to the patient and notify life-threatening situations to the connected health-care structure. The conceived IoT network is developed by means of Node-RED, which is a flow-based programming tool targeted to the IoT. Particular attention is also paid to security and privacy requirements, since sensitive data related to the patients must be kept safe. The proposed solution is preliminary assessed by means of a test-bed.

Many routines in biological experiments require the precise handling of liquid volumes in the range of microliters up to liters. In this paper, we describe a new wireless controller that is adapted to liquid manipulation tasks, in particular when combined with the proposed 3D-printed pumps. It can be built from widely available electronic components and managed with open-source software. The use of peristaltic pumps enables to move volumes from milliliters to liters with a relative error below 1% or a syringe pump capable of injecting volumes in the range of milliliters with microliter accuracy. The system is remotely controllable over WiFi and easily automated using the MQTT communication protocol. The programming of the microcontroller is performed on the Arduino IDE. The WiFi settings and the calibration value can be easily modified, stored and exported in the form of a JSON file to create a user friendly, plug and play and easily scalable device. Additional sensors or actuators can be added, allowing the system to adapt to various usages. Finally, in addition to its low manufacturing cost and its capability to fit a large variety of tasks involving liquid handling, our system has been specifically designed for research environments where adaptability and repeatability of experiments is essential.
