RESUMO

Soybean (Glycine max) is a major source of plant protein and oil. Soybean breeding has benefited from advances in functional genomics. In particular, the release of soybean reference genomes has advanced our understanding of soybean adaptation to soil nutrient deficiencies, the molecular mechanism of symbiotic nitrogen (N) fixation, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and the roles of flowering time in regional adaptation, plant architecture, and seed yield and quality. Nevertheless, many challenges remain for soybean functional genomics and molecular breeding, mainly related to improving grain yield through high-density planting, maize-soybean intercropping, taking advantage of wild resources, utilization of heterosis, genomic prediction and selection breeding, and precise breeding through genome editing. This review summarizes the current progress in soybean functional genomics and directs future challenges for molecular breeding of soybean.

The Chinese famine in 1958-1962 was one of the worst in human history, but its potential influence on cancer risks is uncertain. Using cancer incidence data in Shanghai, China, during 1983-2007, we calculated age-specific incidence rates of gastrointestinal cancers in birth cohorts exposed to the Chinese famine in different periods of life and a non-exposed reference cohort. Age-period-cohort regressions estimated the overall relative risks of gastrointestinal cancers in each birth cohort. A total of 212,098 new cases of gastrointestinal cancer were identified during the study period (129,233 males and 82,865 females), among whom 18,146 had esophageal cancer, 71,011 gastric cancer, 55,864 colorectal cancer, 42,751 liver cancer, 9,382 gallbladder cancer and 14,944 had pancreatic cancer. The risk of esophageal, gastric, colorectal and liver cancers was higher in cohorts exposed to the Chinese famine in early life than in the reference cohort, except for esophageal cancer in women. The risk of esophageal, liver and colorectal cancers was particularly high in men exposed to famine during early childhood (0-9 years). There were no clear associations between famine exposure and the risk of pancreatic or gallbladder cancer. This study suggests an increased risk of esophageal, gastric, liver and colorectal cancers associated with childhood exposure to the Chinese famine. These findings indicate a need for further investigations confirming the results and identifying the underlying mechanisms.

Nutrition deficiency is reported to induce apoptosis of chondrocytes and degeneration of cartilage endplate (CEP) in rabbit. Cartilage endplate stem cells (CESCs) are important for the integrity of structure and function of CEP. Bcl-2/adenovirus E1B 19-kDa-interacting protein 3 (BNIP3) has been reported to regulate apoptosis, autophagy, and cytoprotection. In this study, we aimed to determine whether nutrition deficiency induces apoptosis of CESCs, and whether or not the BNIP3-related pathway is activated in CESCs during nutrition deficiency. CESCs isolated from degenerated human CEP were cultured under normal or nutrition-deficient condition. Then, apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry. The expression and intracellular localization of BNIP3 were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blot analysis, and immunofluorescence assay, respectively. Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and caspase-3 activity were measured by JC-1 staining and caspase-3 activity assay. Our results showed that nutrition deficiency promotes apoptosis and BNIP3 expression in CESCs. Notably, knockdown of BNIP3 could partially decrease nutrition deficiency-induced apoptosis of CESCs. In addition, nutrition deficiency could also induce upregulation of BNIP3, resulting in mitochondrial translocation of BNIP3 and loss of MMP in CESCs in a time-dependent manner. However, nutrition deficiency showed no effects on caspase-3 activity in CESCs. In summary, nutrition deficiency may promote CESC apoptosis partially through upregulating BNIP3, which might lead to activation of the BNIP3-related pathway and apoptosis of CESCs in a caspase-independent manner.

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects social skills and behavior. A significant number of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) may not display noticeable symptoms until they reach the age of three or older. Several factors, including genetic and environmental issues, could affect the progression of ASD in children. Dietary behavior or administration may have a crucial role in the development of autism. Epidemiological investigations have demonstrated that environmental influences play a significant role in how changes in diet can affect behavior and physiology. However, exclusion diets have not been thoroughly studied in relation to this effect. Atypical food behaviors, altered nutritional profiles, and being overweight, obese, or underweight are all associated with autism in children. Overweight or underweight was common in children with autism, but it was not necessarily uncommon in children with normal growth. Moreover, deficiencies in certain vitamins (B12, B9, and D), minerals (calcium and iron), fatty acids (omega-3 and -6), energy, and protein have been documented in children with ASD. The deficiency of these nutrients may lead to gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and change the microbiota in children with ASD. Some nutritional interventions could help individuals with ASD to improve their mental health. Recognizing dietary habits and nutrient requirements can help in planning the best overall treatment for autism. This review discusses GI symptoms and disorders related to nutrition and nutrient-dense diets for ASD.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has led to a global health crisis, exacerbating issues like malnutrition due to increased metabolic demands and reduced intake during illness. Malnutrition, a significant risk factor, is linked to worse outcomes in patients with COVID-19, such as increased mortality and extended hospital stays. This retrospective cohort study investigated the relationship between malnutrition and clinical outcomes within 90-180 days using data obtained from the TriNetX database. Patients aged >18 years diagnosed with COVID-19 between 1 January 2022, and 31 March 2024 were enrolled in the study. The propensity score-matching (PSM) method was used to match patients with malnutrition (malnutrition group) and those without malnutrition (control group). The primary composite outcome was the cumulative hazard ratio (HR) for post-COVID-19 condition, all-cause hospitalization, and all-cause mortality between 90 days and 180 days after COVID-19 diagnosis. The secondary outcomes were the individual components of the primary outcomes. Two cohorts, each consisting of 15,004 patients with balanced baseline characteristics, were identified using PSM. During the 90-180-day follow-up period, the malnutrition group exhibited a higher incidence of all-cause hospitalization, mortality, or post-COVID-19 condition (HR = 2.315, 95% confidence interval: 2.170-2.471, p < 0.0001). Compared with patients with COVID-19 without malnutrition, those with malnutrition may be associated with a higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes.

Poor oral health conditions in adults are associated with chronic pain. A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the link between tooth loss and chronic pain. The study involved 8,662 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Tooth count was categorized into 4 groups, and chronic pain was defined as persistent pain lasting over 3 months despite treatment. Location of the chronic pain, demographics, comorbidities, lifestyle determinants, and dietary intake were retrieved. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to explore cross-sectional associations between tooth count and chronic pain. Compared to participants with more than 20 teeth, those with severe tooth loss presented greater odds of chronic pain (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.111, 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 1.213-3.676 for patients with 1-8 teeth). Edentulous participants presented with significantly higher odds of chronic pain in the lower extremities (78.4%) and buttocks (49.5%). In the multivariate model, apart from rheumatic arthritis (aOR = 4.004, 95% CI = 2.766-5.798), variables of higher chronic pain included smoking (aOR = 1.518, 95% CI = 1.228-1.878), and hypertension (aOR = 1.463, 95% CI = 1.013-2.112). On the contrary, being Mexican American (aOR = .603, 95% CI = .414-.880) was associated with lower odds of chronic pain. The findings suggested a significant link between chronic pain and tooth loss, independent of ethnicity, lifestyle determinants, and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis. PERSPECTIVE: A U.S. nationwide study examined tooth loss and chronic pain. Those with severe tooth loss had increased odds of chronic pain. Edentulous individuals presented higher odds of pain in lower extremities and buttocks. This study highlighted the link between tooth loss and chronic pain, independent of comorbidities and lifestyle factors.

BACKGROUND: Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) is the most effective and durable metabolic and bariatric surgery to achieve a target weight loss. However, many surgeons are hesitant to adopt BPD-DS due to a lack of training, technical complexity, and long-term nutrition deficiencies. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate long-term nutrition outcomes after primary BPD-DS in the management of obesity. METHODS: Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for articles from their inception to February 2023 by 2 independent reviewers using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) system. The review was registered prospectively with PROSPERO (CRD42023391316). RESULTS: From 834 studies screened, 8 studies met the eligibility criteria, with a total of 3443 patients with obesity undergoing primary BPD-DS. At long-term follow-up (≥5 years), 25.4% of patients had vitamin A deficiency (95% CI: -.012, .520, I2 = 94%), and 57.3% had vitamin D deficiency (95% CI: .059, 1.086, I2 = 86%). Calcium deficiency was observed in 125 patients (22.2%, 95% CI: .061, .383, I2 = 97%), and 69.7% had an abnormal parathyroid hormone level (95% CI: .548, .847, I2 = 78%). Ferritin level was abnormal in 30 patients (29.0%, 95% CI: .099, .481, I2 = 79%). CONCLUSIONS: Despite displaying comparable nutrition-related outcomes to mid-term follow-up, our study demonstrated that BPD-DS could result in a high level of long-term nutrition deficiency after BPD-DS for selected patients. However, further randomized controlled studies with standardized supplementation regimens and improvement in compliance are necessary to evaluate and prevent long-term nutritional deficiencies after BPD-DS.

Crop yield production could be enhanced for agricultural growth if various plant nutrition deficiencies, and diseases are identified and detected at early stages. Hence, continuous health monitoring of plant is very crucial for handling plant stress. The deep learning methods have proven its superior performances in the automated detection of plant diseases and nutrition deficiencies from visual symptoms in leaves. This article proposes a new deep learning method for plant nutrition deficiencies and disease classification using a graph convolutional network (GNN), added upon a base convolutional neural network (CNN). Sometimes, a global feature descriptor might fail to capture the vital region of a diseased leaf, which causes inaccurate classification of disease. To address this issue, regional feature learning is crucial for a holistic feature aggregation. In this work, region-based feature summarization at multi-scales is explored using spatial pyramidal pooling for discriminative feature representation. Furthermore, a GCN is developed to capacitate learning of finer details for classifying plant diseases and insufficiency of nutrients. The proposed method, called Plant Nutrition Deficiency and Disease Network (PND-Net), has been evaluated on two public datasets for nutrition deficiency, and two for disease classification using four backbone CNNs. The best classification performances of the proposed PND-Net are as follows: (a) 90.00% Banana and 90.54% Coffee nutrition deficiency; and (b) 96.18% Potato diseases and 84.30% on PlantDoc datasets using Xception backbone. Furthermore, additional experiments have been carried out for generalization, and the proposed method has achieved state-of-the-art performances on two public datasets, namely the Breast Cancer Histopathology Image Classification (BreakHis 40 × : 95.50%, and BreakHis 100 × : 96.79% accuracy) and Single cells in Pap smear images for cervical cancer classification (SIPaKMeD: 99.18% accuracy). Also, the proposed method has been evaluated using five-fold cross validation and achieved improved performances on these datasets. Clearly, the proposed PND-Net effectively boosts the performances of automated health analysis of various plants in real and intricate field environments, implying PND-Net's aptness for agricultural growth as well as human cancer classification.

Recognising the importance of infant and young child feeding practices during the first 2 years of life, the World Health Organization's Global Nutrition Monitoring Framework developed a minimum dietary diversity (MDD) indicator for feeding children aged 6-23 months. MDD is defined as the consumption of food items from five or more groups out of a total of eight food groups. Food intake from less than five food groups is considered minimum dietary diversity failure (MDDF). Using the nationally representative National Family Health Survey (NFHS) dataset, the present study assessed the trend in MDDF between 2005-6 and 2015-16 and the factors associated with MDDF among children aged 6-23 months during 2015-16. The NFHS conducted in 2005-6 and 2015-16 covered a sample of 14 419 and 74 078 children aged 6-23 months, respectively. Overall, the MDDF reduced from 87⋅4  % (95  % confidence interval (95  % CI) 86⋅8  %, 87⋅9  %) in 2005-6 to 80⋅6  % (95  % CI 80⋅1  %, 81⋅0  %) in 2015-16. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that increased child's age, second and third birth order children, higher maternal age and education, mass media exposure of mothers and more than four antenatal care visits had a negative association with the MDDF. Children living in rural areas and residing in high-focus states of India were observed with higher odds of experiencing MDDF. Exposure to community healthcare services was negatively associated with MDDF, and anaemic children were more likely to have MDDF. Socioeconomic status of mothers and children and encouragement of maternal and child healthcare use could be helpful in devising context-specific intervention to mitigate MDDF.

BACKGROUND: Childhood malnutrition is an important public health problem. Animal protein provides essential amino acids in a more adequate pattern than plant-based protein. However, the production of sufficient animal-sourced protein to feed the growing world population is a serious challenge. This review aims to explore the evidence on the use of edible insects as an alternative source of protein and micronutrients in complementary foods for children and their potential to address childhood malnutrition. METHODS: Searches were conducted in two electronic databases PubMed and Cochrane. The reference lists of included studies were also searched. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included in this review. All insect-enriched formulations (e.g., biscuits, cereals, porridge, paste, etc.) exceeded the daily recommended amount of protein and fat for children's complementary foods and showed good acceptability. Only two studies assessed the efficacy of insect-enriched foods on nutritional indicators and found no effect on the reduction of stunting and wasting. However, one study found improvements in the haemoglobin levels and fewer cases of anaemia in the intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: Insect-enriched complementary foods for children are safe, acceptable and have the potential to tackle micronutrient deficiencies. More studies are needed to examine their effect on nutritional status in children.

Along with the issues of inflated social and financial burden associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), specific treatment for this disorder has also not been developed. Having a thorough look at previous trials done to treat autism, we find that nutrition intervention had been used frequently as a complementary form of therapy. Indeed, an early diagnosis of nutrition deficiency and metabolic disorders done concomitantly with accurate therapeutic interventions can be a cornerstone for improving cognitive and behavioral aptitudes of people with autism. Several studies have showed that increasing the intake of specific nutrients can reduce the symptoms and comorbidities associated with autism. Consequently, nutrition intervention and appropriate supplementation can be crucial in managing and treating autism. This paper will discuss recent literature on the significance of metabolic aspects in autistic disorder and highlight the influence of nutrition intervention on the symptoms of autism.

BACKGROUND: To study the effects of hypoxia and nutrition deficiency mimicking degenerated intervertebral disc on the biological behavior of human nucleus-derived pulposus mesenchymal stem cells (hNP-MSCs) and the role of PI3K/Akt pathway in the process in vitro. METHODS: hP-MSCs were isolated from lumbar disc and were further identified by their immunophenotypes and multilineage differentiation. Then, cells were divided into the control group, hypoxia and nutrition deficiency group, the LY294002 group, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) group. Then cell apoptosis, the cell viability, the caspase 3 activity, and the expression of PI3K, Akt, and functional genes (aggrecan, collagen I, and collagen II) were evaluated. RESULT: Our work showed that isolated cells met the criteria of International Society for cellular Therapy. Therefore, cells obtained from degenerated nucleus pulposus were definitely hNP-MSCs. Our results showed that hypoxia and nutrition deficiency could significantly increase cell apoptosis, the caspase 3 activity, and inhibit cell viability. Gene expression results demonstrated that hypoxia and nutrition deficiency could increase the relative expression of PI3K and Akt gene and inhibit the expression of functional genes. However, when the PI3K/Akt pathway was inhibited by LY294002, the cell apoptosis and caspase 3 activity significantly increased while the cell viability was obviously inhibited. Quantitative real-time PCR results showed that the expression of functional genes was more significantly inhibited. Our study further verified that the above-mentioned biological activities of hNP-MSCs could be significantly improved by IGF1. CONCLUSIONS: PI3K/Akt signal pathway may have protective effects on human nucleus pulposus-derived mesenchymal stem cells against hypoxia and nutrition deficiency.

The nutritional status and growth in children with sickle cell disease is compromised due to intake of diet that is low in calories as well as deficient in nutrients. Growth stunting and a low body mass index have been observed in these children. Some children exhibit pica, which is an abnormal eating pattern by ingesting things other than food, like paper, wood etc. This also was found to correlate to lower hemoglobin values. Interventions with certain essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids are known to benefit these children in terms of lowering their complications due to the disease. We therefore wished to see if omega-3 fatty acids exhibit positive effects on their nutritional intake and growth parameters too. Hence, we supplemented these children with omega-3 fatty acids for a period of six months. Both the male and female children with the disease significantly improved their calorific intake as well as body mass index. Also a lowering of pica status was distinctly observed.

This study examined the variation among ethnic populations in prevalence of anemia, vitamin D and B12 deficiencies among refugee children. A retrospective chart review of 388 government assisted refugee children ≤ 16 years of age, seen at the Refugee Health Clinic in Kitchener, Canada from January 2009 to December 2014 was conducted. Vitamin D levels were only collected until December 1st 2010 (116 children). 15.7% were anemic (25% < 5 years, 8.7% 5-11 years, and 18.3% 12-16 years old) with Somali children having the lowest hemoglobin levels compared to those from Iraq, Afghanistan and Myanmar. 53.5% were vitamin D deficient (25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L), seen most commonly in Iraqis and Afghans. 11.2% had vitamin B12 levels < 150 pmol/L. Providers' knowledge of prevalence of nutritional deficiencies related to region of origin, can guide appropriate screening and treatment options to promote longer term cognitive, physical and developmental health.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Haemorrhagic radiation cystitis (HRC) is a late complication of pelvic radiotherapy. Severe cases are difficult to treat due to persistent or recurrent bleeding, despite urological and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). However, wound healing requires a good nutritional status. In this respect, we aimed at analysing the nutritional status of patients with HRC prior to the onset of HBOT and at highlighting predictive nutritional factors of outcome. METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from a cohort of 179 patients with HRC (between 2011 and 2015). Haematuria was graded according to the Subjective, Objective, Management, Analytic scale (SOMA): grade-4 (n = 46) was compared with grade-3 (n = 56), and with grades 1 and 2 (n = 77). S-albumin, prealbumin, vitamins C, D and B6, zinc, selenium, and essential fatty acids were evaluated before HBOT. HBOT response was measured at 3 months according to the haematuria SOMA grade. The Mann-Whitney test, Fisher's exact test and principal-component analysis were used to compare groups. RESULTS: Patients with higher haematuria grades (3 and 4) harboured significant deficiencies in S-albumin, prealbumin, vitamins C, D and B6, zinc, selenium and essential fatty acids. Moreover, grade-4 patients without improvement after 3 months of HBOT had significant lower initial levels of S-albumin, vitamin C, selenium and linoleic acid. Vitamin C levels <2.5 mg/L were strongly associated with HBOT non-response (OR 23.14, 95% CI 3.73-143.69, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Our analyses show serious nutritional deficiencies associated with higher grades of HRC and worse prognoses. Patients with haemorrhagic cystitis might benefit from an adequate dietary supplementation to support healing of their bladder mucosa.

RESUMO

We present a high throughput crop physiology condition monitoring system and corresponding monitoring method. The monitoring system can perform large-area chlorophyll fluorescence imaging and multispectral imaging. The monitoring method can determine the crop current condition continuously and non-destructively. We choose chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and relative reflectance of multispectral as the indicators of crop physiological status. Using tomato as experiment subject, the typical crop physiological stress, such as drought, nutrition deficiency and plant disease can be distinguished by the monitoring method. Furthermore, we have studied the correlation between the physiological indicators and the degree of stress. Besides realizing the continuous monitoring of crop physiology, the monitoring system and method provide the possibility of machine automatic diagnosis of the plant physiology. Highlights: A newly designed high throughput crop physiology monitoring system and the corresponding monitoring method are described in this study. Different types of stress can induce distinct fluorescence and spectral characteristics, which can be used to evaluate the physiological status of plants.
