BACKGROUND: The epidemiology and management of anaphylaxis are not well-reported in Asia. METHODS: A regional pediatric anaphylaxis registry was established by the Asia-Pacific Research Network for Anaphylaxis (APRA), using standardized protocols for prospective data collection, to evaluate the triggers and management of anaphylaxis in the Asia-Pacific region. Pediatric patients below 18 years presenting with anaphylaxis across four Asian countries/cities (Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong (HK), and Qingdao) were included. Allergen triggers, symptoms, anaphylaxis severity, and management were compared. RESULTS: Between 2019 and 2022, 721 anaphylaxis episodes in 689 patients from 16 centers were identified. The mean age at anaphylaxis presentation was 7.0 years (SD = 5.2) and 60% were male. Food was the most common trigger (62%), particularly eggs and cow's milk in children aged 3 years and below. In school-age children, nut anaphylaxis was most common in HK and Singapore, but was rare in the other countries, and wheat was the top allergen in Bangkok. Shellfish anaphylaxis was most common in children aged 7-17. Adrenaline was administered in 60% of cases, with 9% given adrenaline before hospital arrival. Adrenaline devices were prescribed in up to 82% of cases in Thailand but none in Qingdao. CONCLUSIONS: The APRA identified food as the main trigger of anaphylaxis in children, but causative allergens differed even across Asian countries. Fewer than two-thirds of cases received adrenaline treatment, pre-hospital adrenaline usage was low, and adrenaline device prescription remained suboptimal. The registry recognizes an unmet need to strengthen anaphylaxis care and research in Asia-Pacific.

BACKGROUND: Oxylipins are products derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that play a role in cardiovascular disease and aging. Fish oil-derived n-3 PUFAs promote the formation of anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory oxylipins; however, there are little data on oxylipins derived from α-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3), the primary plant-derived n-3 PUFA. Walnuts are a source of C18:3n-3. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect on serum oxylipins of a diet enriched with walnuts at 15% energy (30-60 g/d; 2.6-5.2 g C18:3n-3/d) for 2 y compared to a control diet (abstention from walnuts) in healthy older males and females (63-79 y). METHODS: The red blood cell proportion of α-linolenic acid was determined by gas chromatography as a measure of compliance. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to measure serum concentrations of 53 oxylipins in participants randomly assigned to receive the walnut diet (n = 64) or the control diet (n = 51). Two-year concentration changes (final minus baseline) were log-transformed (base log-10) and standardized (mean-centered and divided by the standard deviation of each variable). Volcano plots were then generated (fold change ≥1.5; false discovery rate ≤0.1). For each oxylipin delta surviving multiple testing, we further assessed between-intervention group differences by analysis of covariance adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and the baseline concentration of the oxylipin. RESULTS: The 2-y change in red blood cell C18:3n-3 in the walnut group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.001). Compared to the control diet, the walnut diet resulted in statistically significantly greater increases in 3 C18:3n-3-derived oxylipins (9-HOTrE, 13-HOTrE, and 12,13-EpODE) and in the C20:5n-3 derived 14,15-diHETE, and greater reductions of the C20:4n-6-derived 5-HETE, 19-HETE, and 5,6-diHETrE. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term walnut consumption changes the serum oxylipin profile in healthy older persons. Our results add novel mechanistic evidence on the cardioprotective effects of walnuts. The health benefits of nut consumption have been extensively demonstrated in observational studies and intervention trials. Besides the high nutritional value, countless evidences show that incorporating nuts into the diet may contribute to health promotion and prevention of certain diseases. Such benefits have been mostly and certainly attributed not only to their richness in healthy lipids (plentiful in unsaturated fatty acids), but also to the presence of a vast array of phytochemicals, such as polar lipids, squalene, phytosterols, tocochromanols, and polyphenolic compounds. Thus, many nut chemical compounds apply well to the designation "nutraceuticals," a broad umbrella term used to describe any food component that, in addition to the basic nutritional value, can contribute extra health benefits. This contribution analyses the general chemical profile of groundnut and common tree nuts (almond, walnut, cashew, hazelnut, pistachio, macadamia, pecan), focusing on lipid components and phytochemicals, with a view on their bioactive properties. Relevant scientific literature linking consumption of nuts, and/or some of their components, with ameliorative and/or preventive effects on selected diseases - such as cancer, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative pathologies - was also reviewed. In addition, the bioactive properties were analyzed in the light of known mechanistic frameworks.

Tree nut allergy is a lifelong and potentially life-threatening condition. The standard of care is strictly avoiding the culprit nut and treating accidental reactions symptomatically. To evaluate potential therapeutic options for desensitizing patients with IgE-mediated tree nut allergy, we systematically searched three bibliographic databases for studies published until January 2024. We looked for active treatments of IgE-mediated allergy to tree nuts (walnut, hazelnut, pistachio, cashew, almond, pecan, macadamia nut, and brazil nut). We focused on allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) using oral (OIT), sublingual (SLIT), epicutaneous (EPIT), or subcutaneous (SCIT) delivery, or other disease-modifying treatments. We found 19 studies that met our criteria: 3 studies investigated sublingual immunotherapy, 5 studied oral immunotherapy to a single tree nut, and 6 used multi-food oral immunotherapy with or without omalizumab. The remaining studies investigated the effectiveness of monoclonal antibodies or IgE-immunoadsorption in multi-food allergic patients, including patients with tree nut allergy. The heterogeneity of the studies prevented pooling and meta-analysis. Oral immunotherapy, single or multi-nut, with or without omalizumab, was the most studied approach and appears effective in conferring protection from accidental exposures. Omalizumab monotherapy is the only approved alternative management for reducing allergic reactions that may occur with accidental exposure.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to evaluate the potential association between chewing areca nuts and the occurrence of type 2 diabetes and to investigate whether chewing status (current chewers or ex-chewers) affects this association. METHODS: We searched The Cochrane Library, PubMed, and EMBASE databases for relevant studies up to May 21, 2023, using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three population-based studies conducted in Taiwan were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. RESULTS: When combined current or ex-chewers were more likely to develop diabetes (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.30-1.62) compared to the never chewers. Ex-chewers had a higher risk of diabetes (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.45-1.62) compared to never chewers. However, there was no evidence that current chewers were associated with a higher risk of diabetes compared to never chewers. Male current and ex-chewers were associated with higher risk of diabetes compared with never chewers (OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.49-1.61). For females there was insufficient evidence. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Existing evidence suggests a link between chewing areca nuts and the development of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, areca chewers should monitor diabetes-related biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE: Demographic and infrastructural developments might compromise medical care provision in rural regions, particularly for acute health conditions. Studying the case of myocardial infarction (MI), we investigated how MI-related mortality at ages 65+ varies between rural and urban regions in Germany and to what extent differences are driven by varying case fatality and disease incidence. METHODS: The study relies on data containing all hospitalizations, cause-specific deaths and population counts for the total German population between years 2012-2018 and ages 65+. MI-related mortality, MI incidence and case fatality are compared between urban and rural regions in a population-wide analysis. The impacts of changing incidence and case fatality on rural-urban MI-related mortality differences are assessed using a counterfactual approach. RESULTS: Rural regions in Germany show systematically higher MI-related death rates and MI incidence at ages 65+ compared to urban regions. Higher mortality is primarily the result of higher MI incidence in rural regions, while case fatality is largely similar. The rural excess in MI-related death rates would be nullified and 1 out of 6 MI-related deaths in rural regions could be prevented if rural regions in Germany would have at least the median MI incidence of urban regions. CONCLUSIONS: MI incidence and not case fatality drives the rural disadvantage in MI-related mortality in Germany. Higher MI incidence points towards potential regional variation in the effectiveness of disease prevention. The findings highlight that improving disease prevention at the patient level carries larger opportunities for reducing regional MI-related mortality inequalities in Germany.

Nuts are an important component of a healthy diet, but little has been known about their effects on muscle health. Therefore, this study examined the association between nut consumption and low muscle strength among Korean adults. This cross-sectional analysis was conducted using single 24-h recall and handgrip strength data from 3962 younger adults 19-39 years, 6921 middle-aged adults 40-64 years and 3961 older adults ≥65 years participated in the seventh cycle (2016-2018) of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Low muscle strength was defined as handgrip strength <28 kg for men and <18 kg for women. Sex-specific OR were obtained for younger, middle-aged and older adults using multivariable logistic regression analyses. About one in four Korean adults were consuming nuts (using a culinary definition) with peanut being the most frequently consumed type. After adjustment for age, BMI, total energy intake, household income, alcohol consumption, smoking, resistance exercise, medical history and dietary protein intake, nut consumption was associated with the lower risk of low muscle strength among older adults ≥65 years (men: OR 0·55, 95 % CI (0·38, 0·79); women: OR 0·69, 95 % CI (0·51, 0·93)); however, this association was not observed among younger adults 19-39 years or middle-aged adults 40-64 years. Our results suggest that consuming nuts might be beneficial in lowering the risk of low muscle strength among Korean older adults.

PURPOSE: Nut-enriched diets are related to improve lipid and inflammatory biomarkers in meta-analyses in the context of primary cardiovascular prevention. However, primary studies on secondary cardiovascular prevention are scarce and controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of nut supplementation on lipid and inflammatory profiles in individuals with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and the frequency of adverse events. METHODS: Six databases were used for research: PubMed, EMBASE, BVS, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov, until February 2023, with no language restrictions. We performed random-effects meta-analyses to compare nut-enriched diets vs. control diets for pre-post intervention changes. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system assessed the evidence's certainty. RESULTS: From the 5187 records identified, eight publications containing data referring to five randomized clinical trials involving 439 participants were included in the final analyses. The nuts evaluated were almonds, pecans, Brazil nuts, and mixed nuts, with doses ranging between 5 g and 85 g (median: 30 g/day). The intervention time varied between 6 and 12 weeks. Compared to nut-free diets, nut intake did not have a statistically significant effect on lipid profile biomarkers, except on the atherogenic index (MD: -0.32 [95% CI -0.58 to -0.06], I2 = 0% - moderate certainty of the evidence). Similarly, there was no effect of nuts on inflammatory profile biomarkers. It was not possible to aggregate data on adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: Nut supplementation did not change lipid and inflammatory profiles in the secondary cardiovascular prevention setting.

Energy-restricted (ER) diets promote weight loss and improve body composition and glycaemic control. Nut consumption also improves these parameters. However, less is known about the combined benefit of these two strategies. This scoping review implemented a systematic search of Medline, Embase and Scopus to identify randomised controlled trials evaluating the effect of ER diets with or without nuts on body mass, body composition and glycaemic control in adults. After reviewing titles and abstracts, twenty-nine full-text articles were screened, resulting in seven studies reported in eight papers that met the inclusion criteria. Energy restriction was achieved by prescribing a set energy target or reducing intake by 1000-4200 kJ from daily energy requirements. Interventions ranged from 4 to 52 weeks in duration and contained 42-84 g/d of almonds, peanuts, pistachios or walnuts. While all studies reported that energy restriction resulted in significant weight loss, the addition of nuts to ER diets demonstrated significantly greater weight loss in only approximately half of the included studies (4/7 studies). There was limited evidence to support additional benefits from nuts for body composition measures or glycaemic control. Although improvements in weight loss and glycaemia were not consistent when nuts were included in ER diets, no study revealed an adverse effect of nut consumption on health outcomes. Future studies could explore the effect of consuming different types and amounts of nuts, combined with various levels of energy restriction on weight, body composition and glycaemic control.

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is one important exotic forest crop cultivated in South America, specifically in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. However, diseases such as anthracnose, favored by high humidity conditions and high summer temperatures, make its cultivation difficult, causing important loss to pecan farmers. This study used morphological and molecular approaches to identify the Colletotrichum species causing anthracnose in pecan plantations in Southern Brazil. The isolates obtained from pecan fruits with anthracnose symptoms were grouped through quantitative morphological characteristics into three distinct morphotypes. Molecular analysis of nuclear genes allowed the identification of six species of Colletotrichum causing anthracnose in pecan: C. nymphaeae, C. fioriniae, C. gloeosporioides, C. siamense, C. kahawae, and C. karsti. Three of these species are reported for the first time as causal agents of anthracnose in pecan. Therefore, these results provide an important basis for the adoption and/or development of anthracnose management strategies in pecan orchards cultivated in southern Brazil and neighboring countries.

Longer-term pecan consumption has shown appetite-regulating effects as a part of a free-living diet, yet the physiologic appetite responses to a single pecan-containing meal are unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the acute physiologic, subjective, and direct appetite responses of a pecan-containing meal to an energy- and macronutrient-matched control meal. This was an acute meal challenge study utilizing a double-blinded randomized crossover design with two periods. Participants were young, healthy adults (BMI: 22.9 ± 3.3 kg/m2, age: 22 ± 3 y) who consumed a meal containing either 68 g of pecans (PEC; 795 kcal) or an energy- and macronutrient-matched control meal (CON; 794 kcal) on separate testing days. At both testing visits, five postprandial blood draws, and visual analog scale (VAS) questionnaires (in-lab) were used to determine differences in peptide YY (PYY), ghrelin, and subjective appetite over a 4-h postprandial period. Participants also completed VAS questionnaires (at-home) and food records for the rest of the day after leaving the testing visits. Thirty-one out of thirty-two randomized participants completed the study. There was a greater overall postprandial PYY response (p < 0.001), and a greater suppression of postprandial ghrelin after time point 120 min (p < 0.001), with the PEC vs. CON meal. Further, there was a greater increase in subjective fullness (p = 0.001), and suppression of at-home overall appetite (p = 0.02), from time 240-780 min post-meal with PEC vs. CON meals. There were no differences in self-reported EI between meals or any other VAS measure. In conclusion, a pecan-containing breakfast shake produced more favorable physiologic and subjective improvements in appetite compared to an energy- and macronutrient-matched control meal. Antibiotic resistance in infectious diseases has been a serious problem for the last century, and scientists have focused on discovering new natural antimicrobial agents. Pinus pinea has been used as a natural pharmacotherapeutic agent with antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, and high antioxidant properties. In this study, GC-MS and LC-HR/MS were employed to analyze Pinus pinea L. nut and nutshell extracts. DPPH radical scavenging assay was performed to analyze the antioxidant properties of the extracts, but no activity was determined. GC-MS analysis showed that linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acids were the three most dominant fatty acids in nut and nutshell extracts, with ratios between 6.75% and 47.06% (v/v). LC-HR/MS revealed that the nutshell methanol extract had a higher phenolic content than other extracts, with vanillic acid (1.4071 mg/g). Antimicrobial activity assays showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the extracts varied between 5.94 and 190 mg/mL, and the most significant inhibition was seen in the nutshell methanol extract (MICs: between 5.94 and 47.5 mg/mL). Consequently, the antimicrobial activity of the extracts can be attributed to the dense fatty acids they contain, and the nutshell methanol extract showed the most potent inhibition related to the abundance of phenolic compounds in the extract.

Assessments of the severity of scab (Venturia effusa), an economically significant disease of pecan, are critical for determining pecan cultivar susceptibility, disease epidemiology, and integrated disease management approaches. We developed a standard area diagram (SAD) set to aid in assessments of pecan leaflet scab. Leaflets with scab lesions were harvested and scanned using a flatbed scanner at 600 dpi, and Fiji (ImageJ) was used to determine the actual percent disease severity. The SADs had 10 leaflets ranging in severity from 0.2 to 48.9%. Forty "small" (1.34 to 7.43 cm2) and 40 "large" (7.67 to 25.9 cm2) leaflet images were randomized for rater assessments. The images were assessed twice by 36 raters, first without and then with the SADs as a guide. Data were subjected to analysis using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (LCC, pc) to determine the accuracy of ratings and by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis to determine interrater reliability. The effects of rater experience, rater location, and leaflet size were also determined. The SADs significantly improved the agreement between raters and the actual values (LCC, pc = 0.70 and 0.84 without and with the SADs, respectively). The reliability of estimates was improved (ICC = 0.54 and 0.82 without and with the SADs, respectively). The effect of rater location on overall concordance was significant without and with the SADs based on an analysis of variance using a generalized linear model and lsmeans separation (P < 0.05). A generalized linear mixed model analysis revealed that there was a significant interaction between rater location, experience, and the use of the SADs, with some raters having greater improvement in generalized bias and concordance. Raters had a significantly better accuracy when rating "small" leaves (LCC, pc = 0.86) compared with "large" leaves (LCC, pc = 0.82) when using the SADs, highlighting the impact of psychophysics on field evaluations of plant disease severity. The proposed SADs will serve as an improved tool for performing pecan leaflet scab assessments by the pecan research community.

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is a valuable crop in the southern United States. Scab (caused by Venturia effusa) is a major biotic constraint to pecan production in the southeastern region and requires 10 to 15 or more fungicide applications for control. Spray application relies on large standard radial airflow air blast sprayers (SSs). Some SSs have been adapted to include a volute on one side to project spray higher into the canopy because of a decline in coverage with height. A grower-designed and engineered double volute-generated focused airflow air blast sprayer (DVS) was assessed for scab control and spray coverage compared with an SS. Over three seasons, on foliage and fruit, scab control was either equal to or superior using the DVS sprayer. On mature fruit, in 2017, scab severity on the control was 9.07%, on the DVS it was 0.19%, and on the SS it was 0.24%; in 2018 severity was 84.4, 18.4, and 29.1%, respectively; and in 2019 it was 32.7, 7.0, and 11.6%, respectively. There were no discernable gradients in scab severity with tree height with either sprayer in 2017, but in 2018 the difference was significant, with the DVS having a shallower gradient, and in 2019 the DVS slope was numerically less steep compared with the SS. Mature fruit weight was significantly greater on trees treated using the DVS compared with the SS in 2017 and 2018 but was not different in 2019. Spray coverage studies showed that the DVS sprayer had significantly more coverage at heights >13.8 m (up to 19.0 m), ranging from 18.4 to 14.1%, compared with coverage using the SS, which ranged from 7.9 to 2.9%. The slope in decline of spray coverage with height was significantly shallower with the DVS sprayer, and spray profiles reflected these differences. Disease control was improved overall when using the DVS, and the DVS provided greater spray coverage at heights >13.8 m when compared with the SS sprayer. The DVS design may offer economical, superior scab control in pecan orchards where trees are >13.8 m tall.

Hazelnut is among the most important nut crops in Chile, currently covering 46,000 ha. In 2023, the country exported 30,000-ton. In recent years the incidence of plants with internal discoloration, cankers and dieback has been increasing. In some cases, the trees died and had to be removed and, after a year, purple resupinate fruiting bodies were observed growing from the stumps. To determine the etiology of the symptoms and signs, wood samples (n=318) were collected since 2020, from 38 symptomatic orchards from Maule to La Araucanía Regions, primarily from the cvs. Tonda di Giffoni and Lewis. Wood sections 0.5 cm diameter were cut from the symptomatic tissues, disinfected using a sodium hypochlorite (10%) solution, and plated on a quarter-strength acidified potato dextrose agar (aPDA1/4). The plates were incubated and purified on PDA. Subsequently, isolates were identified by morphological and molecular means. Almost half of the isolates (47%) were preliminarily identified as basidiomycetes, based on mycelial features such as the presence of clamp connections, with 45% of them exhibiting abundant whitish cottony fast-growth mycelia, resembling Chondrostereum purpureum (Grinbergs et al., 2020). DNA was extracted and the 500-bp fragment, located between 5S and 18S ribosomal regions, was amplified using APN1 specific primers (Becker et al. 1999), identifying the isolates as C. purpureum. In addition, 5.8S gene of RGM1 (35°13'40.9"S 71°25'14.1"W), RGM2 (36°31'27.95"S 71°46'58.31"W), RGM3 (37°10'54.8"S 72°03'39.6"W), RGM4 (35°19'25.2"S 71°19'54.7"W) and RGM5 (36°35'30.8"S 72°05'18.8"W) isolates, representing different locations within the hazelnut growing area, was amplified using ITS1/ITS4 primers (White et al., 1990). The PCR product was sequenced, and the analysis showed 100% homology among isolates (Genebank codes: PP839283, PP839284, PP839285, PP839286 and PP839287, respectively). To determine the pathogenicity of the isolates, 30-cm healthy cuttings cv. Lewis were inoculated with mycelial plugs, while control shoots were inoculated with sterile agar plugs. Cuttings were vertically arranged in pots with 3-cm water and incubated for 60-d at 22°C. In addition, fresh cuts of 3-y potted plants cv. Lewis were inoculated with mycelial plugs and incubated for 137-d in a shadehouse. After incubation, bark was removed from inoculated cuttings and the length of necrotic lesions was measured. Although discoloration was reproduced by all the isolates in both pathogenicity tests, RGM1 isolate was the most aggressive, causing the complete discoloration of the cuttings and the death of the inoculated plants. To our knowledge this is the first report of C. purpureum causing wood disease in hazelnut. These findings are significant because the disease may not only reduce orchard longevity but also decrease fruit yield and quality, as observed in other fruit crops (Grinbergs et al., 2021).

In the summer of 2021, a 20-year-old 'Colossal' (Castanea sativa × C. crenata hybrid) tree in a commercial chestnut orchard in northwest Michigan suddenly declined. Until 2023, an additional 26 adjacent trees declined, suggesting the occurrence of root-graft transmission of the pathogen. The initial wilting of leaves progressed to complete tree death in about 10 days. Symptoms included wilting, and bronzing, followed by tanning starting at leaf apex and margins, with significant defoliation. Sometimes black-to-brown streaks of discoloration appear in the sapwood, with no signs of mycelial mat production on dead trees. Branches from symptomatic trees in two different areas of the orchard were submitted to Plant and Pest Diagnostics at Michigan State University. Bretziella fagacearum (Bretz) Z.W. de Beer, Marinc., T.A. Duong & M.J. Wingf. was detected in both samples using nested PCR (Wu et al. 2011) and qPCR (Bourgault et al. 2022). The products of the nested PCR were sequenced (GenBank accession nos. OR522695-OR522696) and BLASTn search results showed 100% identity to an ex-type strain of B. fagacearum (MH865866). Surface-sterilized discolored sapwood chips were plated on acidified potato dextrose agar (aPDA). Bretziella fagacearum was consistently recovered; colony and endoconidia morphology aligned with the description of the pathogen (De Beer et al. 2017). A pure culture (BF277) was obtained for inoculation experiments. To confirm pathogenicity, 10 'Colossal' chestnut seedlings (average stem diameter of 9 mm) were inoculated in the greenhouse with a 14-day old culture of BF277. Using a conical drill bit, two 0.4 mm diameter holes were drilled, one was 5 cm above the soil line at a 45° angle and the other was on the opposite side of the stem at least 10 cm above the soil line. A 50-µl conidial suspension (1 × 107 conidia per ml) was applied and the holes were sealed with Parafilm. Five 'Colossal' seedlings were inoculated with sterile water. Leaf epinasty with bent petioles was observed 14 days later. Leaf wilting and necrosis similar to natural infection in the orchard were observed at 24 and 34 days after inoculation, respectively. Water-inoculated control plants showed no symptoms. Bretziella fagacearum was reisolated from symptomatic plants by surface sterilizing leaf petioles with 75% ethanol (30 s), followed by 10% (v/v) bleach (1 min), and two rinses with sterile deionized water (>1 min). Petiole pieces (~1 cm) were plated on aPDA. The pathogen was reisolated from six symptomatic plants and detected using qPCR in the remaining four seedlings. Bretziella fagacearum was not detected in control plants. The identity of the recovered fungus was confirmed following the amplification of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) from extracted genomic DNA, as described in Chahal et al. 2022. The resulting PCR product was sequenced and assembled into a consensus sequence using Geneious Prime. The consensus sequence (accession no. OR515809) revealed 100% identity to the ex-type of B. fagacearum (KU042044). This is the first record of B. fagacearum infecting chestnut trees in Michigan. Previously, B. fagacearum has been reported infecting Chinese chestnut (C. mollissima) in Missouri (Bretz and Long, 1950). Oak wilt is widely distributed in Michigan and is the predominant disease afflicting red oaks in the Midwestern U.S. Consequently, constant vigilance and monitoring are essential in chestnut orchards to promptly detect and effectively manage potential infections.

Pecan is a valuable nut crop cultivated in the southeastern US. Among the major yield-limiting factors in the region is scab, caused by the plant pathogenic fungus Venturia effusa. Managing scab in tall trees (15 to 25+ m) in pecan orchards is challenging due to the limitations of getting sufficient spray coverage throughout the canopy. We explored the effects of hedge-pruning on scab in three orchards: 14 m tall cv. Desirable trees winter hedge-pruned on alternate sides to 11 m (site 1), 18 m tall cv. Stuart trees hedge-pruned on both sides simultaneously to 11 m (site 2), and 15 m tall cv. Caddo trees winter hedge-pruned in winter vs. summer to 11 m (site 3). At site 1 and 2 hedge-pruned trees were compared to non-pruned control trees. All trees received recommended fungicide applications to control scab via air-blast sprayer. Disease incidence and/or severity was assessed at different sample heights on shoots, foliage and fruit during three seasons (2020, 2021, and 2022). At site 1 the hedge pruned trees often had significantly or numerically more severe scab on foliage and fruit compared to the control trees, although the differences were mostly small. The frequency of mature fruit with scab severity <10% was greatest on control trees in 2021 and 2022. At site 2, there were few differences between hedge-pruned and control trees (on fruit, scab severity was either significantly less on hedge-pruned trees, or not different to the control), but the frequency of mature fruit with scab severity <10% was consistently greatest on hedge-pruned trees. At site 3, scab intensity was low, and there were no significant differences in scab severity between winter- and summer-pruning treatments. At sites 1 and 2 there was generally more severe scab at greater sample heights compared to low in the canopy. At site 3 there was little effect of height on disease. The benefit of hedge-pruning likely increases with tree height in scab-susceptible cultivars. If a tree is >~15 m tall, a greater proportion of the fruit will be within reach of efficacious spray coverage from air-blast sprayers.

Much evidence supports that the early introduction of allergenic foods in weaning is useful to prevent food allergies later in life. Real life is often different, with factors related to mothers and infants. Our study aimed to deepen the timing of introducing the foods responsible for most allergic reactions during the weaning and why parents delay their introduction. 110 mothers participated in the study, compiling a questionnaire. Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a delayed introduction of allergenic foods at 4 months (r = 0.433, p < 0.01) and 1 year (r = 0.486, p < 0.01). Large-for-gestational age at birth was inversely associated with a delayed introduction of allergenic foods (r=-0.204, p < 0.05). This study demonstrates that introducing many allergens is delayed during the weaning. Parents with infants fed with exclusive breastfeeding could need more information about the correct time of introduction of potential allergens in the weaning.

BACKGROUND: The increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to traditional protein sources, driven by population growth, underscores the importance of protein in a healthy diet. Pecan (Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch) nuts are currently underutilized as plant-based proteins but hold great potential in the food industry. However, there is insufficient information available on pecan protein, particularly its protein fractions. This study aimed to explore the physicochemical and functional properties of protein isolate and the main protein fraction glutelin extracted from pecan nuts. RESULTS: The results revealed that glutelin (820.67 ± 69.42 g kg-1) had a higher crude protein content compared to the protein isolate (618.43 ± 27.35 g kg-1), while both proteins exhibited amino acid profiles sufficient for adult requirements. The isoelectric points of protein isolate and glutelin were determined to be pH 4.0 and pH 5.0, respectively. The denaturation temperature of the protein isolate (90.23 °C) was higher than that of glutelin (87.43 °C), indicating a more organized and stable conformation. This is further supported by the fact that the protein isolate had a more stable main secondary structure than glutelin. Both proteins demonstrated improved solubility, emulsifying, and foaming properties at pH levels deviating from their isoelectric points in U-shaped curves. Compared to the protein isolate, glutelin displayed superior water and oil absorption capacity along with enhanced gelling ability. CONCLUSION: The protein isolate and glutelin from pecan nuts exhibited improved stability and competitive functional properties, respectively. The appropriate utilization of these two proteins will support their potential as natural ingredients in various food systems. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Objectives: To describe current trends and characteristics of esophageal cancer (EC) over the past ten years largest tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: This single center retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Gastroenterology and Oncology, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, Karachi, Pakistan, between the period of ten years from 1st January 2010 to 31st December 2019. Patient data including epidemiological characteristics such as age, gender, education, residence, occupation, addictions, comorbidities, symptoms, location of EC, laboratory parameters and histopathological type were recorded. All patients with missing histological and radiological findings were excluded. Results: The mean age of all patients was 49.26±14.24 years and among them majority were females 566 (56.1%). Almost, 834 (82.7%) patients had SQC and 175 (17.3%) presented with ADS. Most common presenting symptom was dysphagia in both groups 327 (32.4%) followed by vomiting (22.8%) and weight loss 196 (19.4%). The Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) findings showed the distal esophagus involvement in most of the patients (36.3%) in both groups. CT scan findings showed that the lower region was the most involved region in 367 (36.4%) patients, followed by middle and upper in 227 (22.5%) and 156 (15.5%) patients respectively. The thickening of mass on CT- scan was circumferential in most of the patients (42.7%) in both groups. Conclusion: According to our findings, SQC is more prevalent than ADC. Female predominance especially at younger age was most common as compared to past studies. No significant association between a single risk factor has been found in our study however smoking and betel nut chewing were found as known putative risk factors.
