After dentition is complete, degenerative tooth characteristics can be used for dental age assessment. Radiological assessment of the visibility of the root canals of the mandibular third molars in dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) is known to be one such suitable feature. Essentially, two different stage classifications are available for evaluating the visibility of the root canals of mandibular third molars in the DPR. The aim of this study was to determine if one method outperforms the other. Therefore, the 2010 method of Olze et al. was directly compared to the 2017 method of Lucas et al. in the 2020 modification of Al Qattan et al. To this end, 233 DPRs from 116 females and 117 males aged 20.0 to 40.9 years were evaluated by three independent experienced examiners. In addition, one examiner ran two independent evaluations. Correlation between age and stage was investigated, and the inter- and intra-rater reliability was estimated for both methods. Correlation between age and stage was higher with the Olze method (Spearman rho 0.388 [95% CI 0.309, 0.462], males and 0.283 [95% CI 0.216, 0.357], females) than the Lucas method (0.212 [95% CI 0.141, 0.284], males and 0.265 [95% CI 0.193, 0.340], females). The intra-rater repeatability of the Olze method (Krippendorff's α = 0.576 [95% CI 0.508, 0.644], males and α = 0.592 [95% CI 0.523, 0.661], females) was greater than that for the Lucas method (intra-rater α = 0.422 [95% CI 0.382, 0.502], males and α = 0.516 [95% CI 0.523, 0.661], females). Inter-rater reproducibility was also greater for the Olze method (α = 0.542 [95% CI 0.463, 0.620], males and α = 0.533 [95% CI 0.451, 0.615], females) compared to the Lucas method (α = 0.374 [95% CI 0.304, 0.443], males and α = 0.432 [95% CI 0.359, 0.505], females). The method of Olze et al. was found to present marginal advantages to the Lucas et al. method across all examinations and may be a more appropriate method for application in future studies.

Dental Age Estimation (DAE) is an effective instrument of the rule of law for verifying dubious age claims in living individuals. Once tooth development is complete, only degenerative dental characteristics can be used for this purpose. The influence of ethnicity on these degenerative dental characteristics has not been clarified.Degenerative changes were examined using modified Gustafson's criteria including secondary dentin formation, cementum apposition, periodontal recession and attrition using the Olze et al. (2012) staging scales. Orthopantomograms of 1882 black South Africans, consisting of 934 females and 948 males, from 12.00 to 40.96 years of chronological age were utilized. Two independent examiners performed the evaluations, with one of the two evaluating all radiographs twice.The relationship between individual characteristics and chronological age was analyzed using multiple regression analysis with chronological age as the dependent variable. The resulting R2 values ranged from 0.22 to 0.35, and the standard error of estimate were between 6.6 and 7.3 years. The correlation with age was consistently lower for females compared to males. The characteristic of cementum apposition emerged as critical in this population, due to a particularly low correlation with age and observer agreements partly in the "slight" range. The formula's values for the correlation with age were in general below the literature values for other populations. Overall, the limited precision of the age estimation by the formulae presented, especially for females, must be emphasized. The question of whether ethnicity per se exerts an influence on the characteristics in question, or whether the different socio-economic status, which encompasses factors such as nutrition and healthcare, is the determining factor, needs to be assessed in future studies.

Various staging scales have been proposed for the assessment of the visibility of the periodontal ligament space of mandibular third molars on dental panoramic radiographs (PANs) for forensic age assessment in living individuals. However, up to now, there has been no systematic comparison between these staging scales available. We directly compared the 2010 staging scale proposed by Olze et al. with the 2017 staging by Lucas et al. and the 2020 staging by Guo et al. in a German study population. We evaluated 233 PANs from 115 females and 118 males aged 20.0 to 40.9 years using three independent examiners, with one examiner conducting two assessments. We examined the correlation between age and stage, as well as the inter- and intra-rater reliabilities. While the point estimates for the correlation coefficient and the reliability measures were lowest for the Guo scale and highest for the Olze scale, confidence intervals showed a large overlap, particularly for the scales of Olze et al. and Lucas et al. The correlation coefficients between stage and age were consistently lower in females than in males across all methods. In summary, we showed that the staging scales of Olze et al. and Lucas et al. were very similar. The Olze method showed higher point estimates across all analyses, and because there are more reference data available for this method, we argue that it should be preferred as the method of choice for further studies in the field. However, Guo method could be considered for instances, in which the inter-radicular periodontal ligament is not evaluable.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to use all permanent teeth as the target and establish an automated dental age estimation method across all developmental stages of permanent teeth, accomplishing all the essential steps of tooth determination, tooth development staging, and dental age assessment. METHODS: A three-step framework for automatically estimating dental age was developed for children aged 3 to 15. First, a YOLOv3 network was employed to complete the tasks of tooth localization and numbering on a digital orthopantomogram. Second, a novel network named SOS-Net was established for accurate tooth development staging based on a modified Demirjian method. Finally, the dental age assessment procedure was carried out through a single-group meta-analysis utilizing the statistical data derived from our reference dataset. RESULTS: The performance tests showed that the one-stage YOLOv3 detection network attained an overall mean average precision 50 of 97.50 for tooth determination. The proposed SOS-Net method achieved an average tooth development staging accuracy of 82.97% for a full dentition. The dental age assessment validation test yielded an MAE of 0.72 years with a full dentition (excluding the third molars) as its input. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed automated framework enhances the dental age estimation process in a fast and standard manner, enabling the reference of any accessible population. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The tooth development staging network can facilitate the precise identification of permanent teeth with abnormal growth, improving the effectiveness and comprehensiveness of dental diagnoses using pediatric orthopantomograms.

Valid reference data are essential for reliable forensic age assessment procedures in the living, a fact that extends to the trait of mandibular third molar eruption in dental panoramic radiographs (PAN). The objective of this study was to acquire valid reference data for a northern Chinese population. The study was guided by the criteria for reference studies in age assessment.To this end, a study population from China comprising 917 panoramic radiographs obtained from 430 females and 487 males aged between 15.00 and 25.99 years was analysed. Of the 917 PANs, a total of 1230 mandibular third molars were evaluated.The PANs, retrospectively evaluated, were performed for medical indication during the period from 2016 to 2021. The assessment of mandibular third molars was conducted using the staging scale presented by Olze et al. in 2012. Two independent examiners, trained in assessing PANs for forensic age estimation, evaluated the images. In instances where the two examiners diverged in their assessments these were subsequently deliberated, and a consensus stage was assigned.The mean age increased with higher stages for both teeth and both sexes. The minimum age recorded for stage D, indicating complete tooth eruption, was 15.6 years in females and 16.1 years in males. Consequently, the completion of mandibular third molar eruption was observed in both sexes well before reaching the age of 18. In light of our results, it is evident that relying solely on the assessment of mandibular third molar eruption may not be sufficient for accurately determining the age of majority. Contrary to previous literature, this finding of a completed eruption of the mandibular third molars in northern Chinese individuals is only suitable for detecting the completion of the 16th year of life in males according to our results. However, as the results are inconsistent compared to other studies in the literature, the trait should not be used as the only decisive marker to prove this age threshold in males from northern China.

Evaluation of third molar eruption represents an established method for age assessment of living individuals. Different classification systems are available for the radiological assessment of third molar eruption. The aim of this study was to identify the most accurate and reliable classification system for the mandibular third molar eruption on orthopantomograms (OPG). We compared the method of Olze et al. (2012) with the method of Willmot et al. (2018) and a newly derived classification system using OPGs from 211 individuals aged 15-25 years. The assessments were performed by three experienced examiners. One examiner evaluated all radiographs twice. The correlation between age and stage was investigated and the inter- and intra-rater reliability was estimated for all three methods. Correlation between stage and age was similar between classification systems, although higher in the data from males (Spearman's rho ranging from 0.568 to 0.583) than from females (0.440 to 0.446). Inter- and intra-rater reliability measures were similar across methods and invariant on sex, with overlapping confidence intervals, although the highest point estimates for both intra- and inter-rater reliability were for the method by Olze et al. with Krippendorf's alpha values of 0.904 (95% confidence interval 0.854, 0.954) and 0.797 (95% confidence interval 0.744, 0.850). It was concluded that the method of Olze et al. from 2012 is a reliable method for practical application and future studies.

BACKGROUND: Dental age (DA) estimation using two convolutional neural networks (CNNs), VGG16 and ResNet101, remains unexplored. In this study, we aimed to investigate the possibility of using artificial intelligence-based methods in an eastern Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 9586 orthopantomograms (OPGs) (4054 boys and 5532 girls) of the Chinese Han population aged from 6 to 20 years were collected. DAs were automatically calculated using the two CNN model strategies. Accuracy, recall, precision, and F1 score of the models were used to evaluate VGG16 and ResNet101 for age estimation. An age threshold was also employed to evaluate the two CNN models. RESULTS: The VGG16 network outperformed the ResNet101 network in terms of prediction performance. However, the model effect of VGG16 was less favorable than that in other age ranges in the 15-17 age group. The VGG16 network model prediction results for the younger age groups were acceptable. In the 6-to 8-year-old group, the accuracy of the VGG16 model can reach up to 93.63%, which was higher than the 88.73% accuracy of the ResNet101 network. The age threshold also implies that VGG16 has a smaller age-difference error. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that VGG16 performed better when dealing with DA estimation via OPGs than the ResNet101 network on a wholescale. CNNs such as VGG16 hold great promise for future use in clinical practice and forensic sciences.

BACKGROUND: Age estimation from panoramic radiographs is a fundamental task in forensic sciences. Previous age assessment studies mainly focused on juvenile rather than elderly populations (> 25 years old). Most proposed studies were statistical or scoring-based, requiring wet-lab experiments and professional skills, and suffering from low reliability. RESULT: Based on Soft Stagewise Regression Network (SSR-Net), we developed DENSEN to estimate the chronological age for both juvenile and older adults, based on their orthopantomograms (OPTs, also known as orthopantomographs, pantomograms, or panoramic radiographs). We collected 1903 clinical panoramic radiographs of individuals between 3 and 85 years old to train and validate the model. We evaluated the model by the mean absolute error (MAE) between the estimated age and ground truth. For different age groups, 3-11 (children), 12-18 (teens), 19-25 (young adults), and 25+ (adults), DENSEN produced MAEs as 0.6885, 0.7615, 1.3502, and 2.8770, respectively. Our results imply that the model works in situations where genders are unknown. Moreover, DENSEN has lower errors for the adult group (> 25 years) than other methods. The proposed model is memory compact, consuming about 1.0 MB of memory overhead. CONCLUSIONS: We introduced a novel deep learning approach DENSEN to estimate a subject's age from a panoramic radiograph for the first time. Our approach required less laboratory work compared with existing methods. The package we developed is an open-source tool and applies to all different age groups.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the diagnostic value of orthopantomograms (OPG) in the identification of root resorption of lateral incisors, secondary to an impacted canine, as confirmed by a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort study. SETTING: South Wales secondary care setting: Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny. METHODS: A total of 40 consecutive patients with impacted canines between January 2018 and December 2019 were selected. For each patient, one consultant orthodontist examined the OPG in isolation to detect the presence and extent of resorption of lateral incisors. The CBCT report was then studied to confirm the presence and extent of pathology. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive values and negative predictive values were calculated. RESULTS: In total, 19 maxillary right canines, 18 maxillary left canines, one mandibular right canine and two mandibular left canines were examined. Impactions were more prevalent in the maxilla (92.5%) with higher predilection towards female patients (65%). There was higher prevalence of root resorption in the maxillary right quadrant (57.1%), in concordance with other studies. OPGs were found to have a sensitivity of 81.0% and a specificity of 10.5%, with an accuracy value of 47.5%. Positive and negative predictive values were found to be 50.0% and 33.3%, respectively. The extent of root resorption was incorrectly estimated from the OPG in 84% of cases. Correct estimation occurred in 16% of cases, with overestimation and underestimation occurring in equal proportion (42%). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the limitations of plain film radiographs and the merits of using CBCT in the accurate diagnosis of resorption of lateral incisors with an associated impacted canine. It also gives an indication into the location prevalence of resorption in a small cohort of patients. This preliminary study establishes the basis for future, larger-scale studies where outcomes can be generalisable at a population level.

AIM: Determination of age is a pivotal part of forensic dentistry. Since many dental age determination methods are invasive, Cameriere introduced a radiographic method where age evaluation was carried out using an orthopantomogram (OPG). An adaptation of the same formula was later formulated by Rai et al. for the Indian population. The aim of the study was to assess the age and to dictate the efficiency of the Indian version of Cameriere's formula in the Chennai subpopulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study consisted of radiographs belonging to 50 individuals with an age range of 5-15 years. Radiographs were taken using the OPG and the soft copies obtained were analyzed. The variables such as seven left and right permanent mandibular teeth and the number of teeth with closed apical, and with open apical, ends of roots were examined and measured. The obtained data, after substituting in the formula was statistically analyzed using paired and unpaired t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient test. RESULTS: On comparing dental age and chronological age, statistically significant results were obtained on both sides of the radiograph. Between genders, both sides of the radiograph showed non-significant results. On correlating the sides, the left side showed greater accuracy in age determination compared to the right side of the OPG. CONCLUSION: Age estimation using Indian-specified formula provides a near good estimate and hence can be a reliable method to measure the chronological age of the participants. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Indian version of the Cameriere's formula can be used as a rational tool to assess the age of young children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Angle fractures represent the largest percentage of mandibular fractures. They pose as a unique entity because of their codependent morphological dynamic factors, rendering the understanding of the mechanism, and treatment challenging. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between the mandibular gonial angle and the risk of mandibular angle fracture while highlighting its clinical relevance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of radiographs of patients treated for mandibular fractures was done. The factors studied were as follows: the presence of a high gonial angle and an impacted third molar. The outcome was mandibular angle fracture. The gonial angle was measured using Planmeca Digital Software 3.7.0.R. Status of the third molar was also noted. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS 22 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY). RESULTS: The sample comprised 70 mandibular fractures (32 angle fractures and 38 non-angle fractures). The mean gonial angle in the angle fracture group was 128.5 ± 5.4º which was 10.2° larger than in the non-angle group (mean 118.5 ± 4.4º; P = 0.0001). Patients with a high gonial angle were 8.7 times more likely to sustain an angle fracture than those with normal or low gonial angles. A statistically significant relationship between the presence of impacted third molar and patients sustaining mandibular angle fractures was noted (P = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Subjects with a high gonial angle and an impacted third molar are at an increased risk for mandibular angle fracture due to direct and indirect morphological factors.

The gold standard diagnostic modality for osteoporosis is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). But it is expensive and often unavailable. Studies have demonstrated that decreased bone mineral density (BMD) may affect mandibular bone morphometrically on radiographs. Such studies are rare in the Indian population. This study was conducted to evaluate correlation between radiomorphometric markers on digital orthopantomograms (OPGs) and BMD measurements done by DXA in an Indian population. A total of 344 subjects aged 45 years or above, who visited a dental outpatient department over a period of 6 years were included in the study after obtaining ethical committee approval and informed consent. Digital OPG and DXA BMD measurements were obtained. Subjects' T-scores were obtained, on the basis of which they were divided into osteoporotic, osteopenic, and normal. OPGs were evaluated to obtain the mandibular cortical index (MCI) and the panoramic mandibular index (PMI). Correlations of MCI and PMI with BMD were analyzed statistically with SPSS (version 16.0; SPSS, Chicago, IL). In the osteoporotic group, there was no subject with MCI finding of C1, and 77.42% prevalence of C3 finding was found. C2 finding was in highest proportion in the osteopenic group (p<0.05). Normal BMD group was associated with the C1 finding of 76.47%. Almost 48% of the osteoporotic group had a PMI score of <0.40, whereas 50% of osteopenic subjects had a PMI score of 0.4-0.44. Normal subjects having a PMI score of >0.44 constituted 49.1% of the population. Mean BMD scores decreased significantly with increasing MCI stage and increased significantly with increasing PMI (p<0.05). Significant correlations between PMI and MCI were obtained with DXA BMD. Digital OPGs may provide an economical and reliable diagnostic tool to rule out osteoporosis or osteopenia in undiagnosed patients, where DXA screening may not be available or is financially nonviable.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous regeneration of bone is commonly seen in the small surgical defects caused by enucleation of cysts. However, in case of large surgical defects caused by the enucleation, spontaneous regeneration of bone is a rare phenomenon and it depends on factors, such as age of the patient, intact periosteum, and proper stabilization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 16 patients, who reported to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery with the complaint of pain and swelling in the jaws diagnosed as cyst. The sample included equal numbers of male and female subjects aged between 15 and 40 years. Panoramic radiographs were taken pre- and postoperatively on day 2 of the enucleation. The dimensions of the cyst were evaluated on the radiograph according to the proforma. Subsequent radiographs were taken at regular intervals of 1.5, 3, and 6 months using standard parameters and were analyzed using MCID™ analysis software of imaging research. RESULTS: Mean reduction was seen in up to 39 and 60% in the cystic cavity size and increase in the mean density up to 59 and 90.2% at 3 and 6 months intervals respectively. CONCLUSION: Spontaneous bone regeneration was seen even after primary closure of the large cystic defect without the need for placement of foreign substances or grafts and it also eliminated the complications resulting from placement of foreign substance. Further studies are required in a larger sample with longer follow-up durations to confirm the outcome of the present work for the benefit of patients. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The present study depicted that spontaneous bone regeneration can occur with accepted results after simple enucleation of jaw cyst without the aid of any graft material. Hence, simple enucleation may be considered as a first line of treatment modality for cystic lesion of the jaws. This simplifies the surgical procedure, decreases the economic and biologic costs, and reduces the risk of postoperative complications. Follow-up is necessary along with patient's compliance for the success of treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate assessment of osseointegration in dental implants requires precise radiographic visualization of pathologic conditions as well as anatomical structures. The present study aimed to evaluate the formation of bony tissue (osseointegration) using digital orthopantomogram (OPG) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) immediately after implant insertion (within 7 days) and 3 months postinsertion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty single-implant sites on mandi-bular posterior regions were selected on patients irrespective of their gender. Both digital OPG and CBCT were done within a week and again after 3 months of implant insertion surgery, using the same exposure parameters. RESULTS: Three of the 20 implants were submerged and were excluded as the crestal bone height could not be measured. The participants were recalled for radiographic measurements after 3 months of implant placement. On an average, there was 0.03 mm of osseointegration at the apical portion after 3 months of implant insertion on digital OPG; 0.04 mm of osseointegration at the crestal bone height after 3 months on digital OPG; and 0.01 mm of osseointegration at the apical portion after 3 months on CBCT. No change or ≤0.02 mm of osseointegration at crestal bone height after 3 months on CBCT. CONCLUSION: Both digital OPG and CBCT are significant for the assessment of osseointegration in implants, and hence, endow definite benefit for accurate assessment in terms of the success of the implant placement. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: However, CBCT is a better mode of evaluating dental implants but one should keep in mind that radiographic examination must be conducted to the benefit of the patient by application of the lowest achievable dose.

Postoperative neck infection (PONI) is a known complication of neck dissection. In this study we explored the impact of dental status on the development of PONI, using orthopantomograms to assess edentulism, periodontal health, and caries status. Retrospective analysis was performed for all new oral cancer patients who had neck dissection between January 2008 and January 2020 in a tertiary head and neck centre. PONI risk factors assessed included patient characteristics, dental status, tumour, and surgical factors. Development of PONI was the primary outcome. Edentulous patients had lower risk of PONI (OR 0.06, p = 0.026) compared to those with 21 or more teeth. Periodontitis and dental caries were not statistically significant. Current smokers (OR 2.09, p = 0.044) and free flap reconstruction (OR 5.41, p < 0.001) were also significant predictors for development of PONI. This study highlights the presence of teeth as a potential source of infection post neck dissection and that orthopantomogram assessment may be inadequate to identify at risk patients. Future studies are required on direct clinical assessment of dentition to evaluate the impact of dental optimisation in prevention of PONI.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the mandibular trabecular pattern in pre- and postmenopausal age women. By analysing the strut, fractal, grey level co-occurrence matrix, and radio-morphometric indices in the panoramic radiograph. Method: Panoramic radiographs from 2019 to 2022 were used to assess pre- and postmenopausal women's bone mineral density. A total of 272 panoramic radiographs, which exhibited clear visibility of the mental foramen on both sides without any blurring, motion artefacts, surgical errors, overlapping hyoid bone, or inferior mandibular cortex, were divided into two groups. Group A (136 premenopausal women) and Group B (136 postmenopausal women). It is a retrospective study that is non-interventional/observational in design. Strut features, fractal dimensions, a grey-level co-occurrence matrix, and radio morphometric indices were used to investigate bone texture in an image processing program. The mean difference between group variables was calculated using an independent sample t-test/unpaired t-test. Results: Pre-menopausal women had a mean age of 38.83 ± 6.01 years, while postmenopausal women had a mean age of 68.26 ± 8.31 In the postmenopausal group Four regions of interest exhibited fractal dimensions with a P value of less than 0.01 and GLCM features including contrast (0.812), correlation (0.230), energy (0.215), and homogeneity (0.322). Strut features of the four regions showed that 15 of 19 characteristics were significantly different. Conclusion: Orthopantomogram is useful in screening for osteoporosis. Strut, radio-morphometric indices, and fractal analysis can assess bone texture and quality. Future research incorporating artificial intelligence can revolutionize image analysis and support clinical decision-making.

Forensic age assessment in the living can provide legal certainty when an individual's chronological age is unknown or when age-related information is questionable. An established method involves assessing the eruption of mandibular third molars through dental panoramic radiographs (PAN). In age assessment procedures, the respective findings are compared to reference data. The objective of this study was to generate new reference data in line with the required standards for mandibular third molar eruption within a German population. For this purpose, 605 PANs from 302 females and 303 males aged 15.04 to 25.99 years were examined. The PANs were acquired between 2013 and 2020, and the development of the mandibular third molars was rated independently by two experienced examiners using the Olze et al. staging scale from 2012. In case of disagreement in the assigned ratings, a consensus was reached through arbitration. While the mean, median and minimum ages were observed to increase with each stage of mandibular third molar eruption according to the Olze method, there was considerable overlap in the distribution of age between the stages. The minimum age for stage D, which corresponds to complete tooth eruption, was 16.1 years for females and 17.1 years for males. Thus, the completion of mandibular third molar eruption was found in both sexes before reaching the age of 18. In all individuals who had at least one tooth with completed eruption and who were younger than 17.4 years of age (n = 10), mineralization of the teeth in question was not complete. Based on our findings, the feature of assessing mandibular third molar eruption in PAN cannot be relied upon for determining age of majority.

Background: Facial asymmetry results from variation in mandibular linear and angular dimensions on the right and left sides of the face. Mandibular asymmetry is of great significance to oral surgeons and orthodontists as it directly impacts the facial profile of an individual. Aim: The present study aimed to measure the prevalence of mandibular asymmetry and its fluctuations during the mixed dentition growth phase in healthy children aged 6-8 years in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. Method: This retrospective observational study was conducted by measuring linear asymmetrical measurements of mandible on orthopantomograms of 390 healthy children (182 boys and 208 girls, aged 6-8 years) with mixed dentition. Linear measurements from orthopantomograms were obtained using a standardized digitizer. Two sets of mandibular measurements were recorded, alongside subjective assessments of mandibular first molar development. An independent t-test was employed to assess the significance between measurements on both sides, while one-way ANOVA was used to demonstrate facial asymmetry significance among different age groups. Result: The result of this study revealed a significant statistical difference (p-value≤ 0.05) for both sides of the mandible across two dimensions: condylar and ramus height (p value = 0.03) and mandibular length (p value = 0.04). The asymmetry index resulted in no asymmetry among most of the included subjects. However, compared to the other three linear measurements, many seven-year-old participants possess mandibular asymmetry on condylar height (54.5 %). Conclusion: Within the limitation it could be concluded that children in growing age have a significant mandibular asymmetry (mainly 7 years), which, however, is only seldom clinically significant. Hence, treatment plan should be cautiously planned.

Taurodontism is a dental morphological anomaly characterized by enlarged pulp cavities repositioned towards the apical region of the tooth, coupled with shortened root structures. Molars are commonly affected by this alteration. Certain populations exhibit up to 48% prevalences for this dental alteration, underscoring its significance in dental age estimation (DAE). In the field of DAE, an individual's chronological age is inferred from specific dental features, frequently employed within the forensic context. The effect of taurodontism on the features of DAE is an unanswered issue. The influence of taurodontism on eruption, mineralization, radiographic visibility of root canals, and radiographic visibility of the periodontal ligament space in mandibular third molars- some of the established criteria for DAE as examples-is currently not systematically examined. Some common staging scales for the dental features of DAE cannot technically be applied to taurodontic teeth. Additionally, given the association of taurodontism with syndromes affecting tooth development, caution is warranted in age assessment procedures. Notably, taurodontic teeth may serve as indicators of syndromes influencing skeletal development, further emphasizing the relevance of taurodontism in forensic age assessment. Presumably taurodontic teeth were included in reference data to some extent due to their partially high prevalence in the past, whereby the influence of taurodontism has been statistically absorbed within the overall spread of the features. Future studies should compare the temporal course of these tooth characteristics in affected and unaffected teeth. Subsequent initiatives should focus on raising awareness among forensic dentists regarding taurodontism, necessitating in-depth exploration of the subject.

Osteoblastoma, an uncommon bone neoplasm characterized by the formation of osteoid tissue, constitutes a rare subset of bone tumors, representing only a negligible percentage of cases. While extensive research on the condition has identified a predilection for long bones and vertebrae, occurrences in facial bones are infrequent. This case report discusses a unique presentation in a nine-year-old female diagnosed with a tumor located in the mandibular parasymphysis region. Radiological examination revealed distinctive irregular contours surrounding the lesion, prompting a comprehensive investigation involving biopsy and subsequent histological analysis. The ensuing evaluation definitively confirmed the diagnosis of a typical benign osteoblastoma. This report highlights the novelty of an unresected benign osteoblastoma situated in the mandible, currently undergoing periodic review, with the option of surgery also on the table.
