In present study, it was purposed to determine the in vitro effect of the extract obtained from the pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel on the breast cancer cell line. MDA-MB-231 cells were exposed to pomegranate peel extract (PoPx) at 37 °C and 5% CO2 for varying durations (24 and 48 h) and doses (25 and 50 µg/mL). At the end of the incubation periods, argyrophilic nucleolus organizer regions (AgNOR) protein status, cell viability/apoptosis and cell cycle of MDA-MB-231 cells were examined in the Muse Cell Analyzer device. Cell viability was observed to be decreased when the groups treated with PoPx were compared with the control group. The group in which apoptosis was observed with the highest value was 50 µg/mL PoPx group (p < 0.05). In the cell cycle test, the number of cells in the G0/G1 stage was found to be significantly higher in the 25 µg/mL PoPx group compared to the control and 50 µg/mL PoPx groups at the end of the 24-h incubation period (p < 0.05) The results also supported cell cycle and apoptosis, and at the end of 24 h, Total AgNOR area(TAA)/Total nuclear area (NA) ratio and AgNOR numbered decreased on the 50 µg/mL PoPx group and were found to be statistically significant compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Consequently, it was determined that PoPx increased apoptosis on breast cancer cells by various mechanisms and inhibited cell viability/cell growth. This study showed that the widespread consumption of PoPx may be effective in preventing cancer formation and slowing its progression.

BACKGROUND: Punica granatum L. is well-known for its multifaceted therapeutic potential, including anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities. AIM: This study aimed to characterize an immunomodulatory compound isolated from Punica granatum L. using a bioactivity-guided approach. METHODS: Chromatographic techniques were adopted for isolation and purification of secondary metabolites. In silico, in vitro, and in vivo methods were performed to characterize the therapeutic potential of the isolated compound. RESULTS: Using preparative thin-layer chromatography, rosmarinic acid was isolated from F4 (column chromatography product obtained from a butanolic fraction of the extract). The impact of rosmarinic acid was assessed in rats using the neutrophil adhesion test, DTH response, and phagocytic index. In immunized rats, rosmarinic acid demonstrated significant immunomodulatory potential. Computational experiments, like molecular docking and molecular dynamics, were also conducted against two targeted receptors, Cereblon (PDB ID: 8AOQ) and human CD22 (PDB ID: 5VKM). Computational studies suggested that an increase in phagocytic index by rosmarinic acid could be attributed to inhibiting Cereblon and CD22. Pharmacokinetics and toxicity prediction also suggested the drug-likeness of rosmarinic acid. CONCLUSION: Rosmarinic acid is a potential candidate, but extensive research needs to be done to translate this molecule from bench to bedside.

The present investigation examined the impact of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) juice on trace elements, minerals, and oxidative stress in relation to the potential harm inflicted by aluminum chloride (AlCl3) in rats. Rats were split into four groups at random for this purpose: control (C), pomegranate juice (PJ), aluminum chloride (A), and PJ + A. For 30 days, PJ was orally administered by gavage at a rate of 4 mL/kg every other day, whereas AlCl3 was administered intraperitoneally at 8.3 mg/kg. Spectrophotometric analysis was used to measure the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) enzyme activity in various tissues. In addition, high-resolution continuum source flame atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS FAAS) was used to determine the amounts of the elements Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ca, and Mg in the tissues. It was discovered that when PJ therapy was applied to all tissues, the antioxidant enzymes SOD and CAT activity increased, the GSH level rose, and the MDA level, a sign of lipid peroxidation, decreased. Al and Ca levels increased in the A group relative to the C group in all tissues, whereas they decreased in the A + PJ group relative to the A group. Group A exhibited a proportionate increase in Fe levels in the liver and renal tissues compared with group C. Furthermore, the A group's brain tissue had a higher Fe level than the C group's. The A + PJ group's brain tissue had a lower Fe level than the A group's. Our findings demonstrate that PJ therapy greatly decreased Al buildup and oxidative stress in tissues while controlling variations in trace element levels. In addition, it is concluded that PJ might have value as a strong chelating agent to prevent Al poisoning.

Smart packaging materials have been used to protect human health from environmental hazards by sending real-time colorimetric signals for changes in the food packaging environment. However, the colorimetric material sensors use synthetic sensor dyes, which are toxic, expensive, non-biodegradable, and difficult to prepare. Herein, a simple strategy is presented for the development of an environmentally-friendly halochromic wood able to change color upon exposure to spoilage of food. A combination of anthocyanin (Ac)/aluminum (Al) mordant (Ac/Al) nanoparticles and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW)-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was infiltrated into a delignified wood to produce a translucent wood with halochromic properties. CNW were employed as reinforcement agent to improve the mechanical performance of PVA. Additionally, CNW function as a dispersing agent to prevent agglomeration of Ac/Al nanoparticles. The diameters of CNW are in the range of 12-19 nm, whereas Ac/Al particles showed diameters of 9-22 nm. The smart wood changed color from purplish to colorless when exposed to food spoilage. A hypsochromic change from 539 nm to 370 nm was shown by the anthocyanin receptor when the spoilage level of food increased. This could be attributed to the pH-driven molecular switching of anthocyanin, leading to charge delocalization.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a multipurpose dietary and medicinal plant known for its ability to promote various health benefits. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex metabolic disorder driving health and socioeconomic challenges worldwide. It may be characterized by insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. This study aims to conduct a review of pomegranate's effects on MetS parameters using a mechanistic approach relying on pre-clinical studies. The peel, juice, roots, bark, seeds, flowers, and leaves of the fruit present several bioactive compounds that are related mainly to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities as well as cardioprotective, antidiabetic, and antiobesity effects. The use of the juice extract can work as a potent inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme activities, consequently regulating blood pressure. The major bioactive compounds found within the fruit are phenolic compounds (hydrolysable tannins and flavonoids) and fatty acids. Alkaloids, punicalagin, ellagitannins, ellagic acid, anthocyanins, tannins, flavonoids, luteolin, and punicic acid are also present. The antihyperglycemia, antihyperlipidemia, and weight loss promoting effects are likely related to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. When considering clinical application, pomegranate extracts are found to be frequently well-tolerated, further supporting its efficacy as a treatment modality. We suggest that pomegranate fruit, extract, or processed products can be used to counteract MetS-related risk factors. This review represents an important step towards exploring potential avenues for further research in this area.

In recent years, severe climate change leading to by water scarcity reduced water quality has increased the need for effective irrigation strategies for agricultural production. Among these, the reuse of reclaimed water represents a non-expensive and reliable solution. The effect of conventional or reclaimed water, applying convention or smart fertigation system, were investigated during two irrigation seasons on yield, qualitative and biochemical traits of pomegranates fruit (cv Wonderful One) at harvest, and after storage at 7 °C. The results of this study showed that using reclaimed waters with different fertigation systems did not affect the pH values, total soluble solids, and titratable acidity on pomegranates fruit showing slight decrease changes only during postharvest storage. On the other hand, the respiration rate was not affected by water quality. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity was also preserved during storage in pomegranates fruit from plants irrigated with reclaimed water by applying conventional or smart fertigation. The analysis also identified 52 compounds by UHPLC-MSn and HPLC-UV-Vis analyses. A slight decrease (about 17 %) at harvest and during storage in polyphenols content was shown in fruit grown using reclaimed water. The study demonstrates that using reclaimed water is a sustainable and effective way to limit the use of conventional water for irrigating pomegranate crops without significant reduction in yield, or in qualitative and nutritional values of the fruit at harvest and during storage.

Beta-amylases (BAMs, EC 3.2.1.2), belonging to a multigene family, play a pivotal role in starch breakdown and are also involved in hormonal and stress responses, notably to cold stress. Pomegranate trees (Punica granatum L.) are adapted to warm climates and are sensitive to cold temperatures. In this study, we analyzed eight PgBAM genes from the pomegranate genome dataset. These members unevenly distributed across chromosomes and were categorized into four groups based on their orthologous members. The motif composition was highly consistent among most members. In contrast, exon numbers and arrangements were conserved within groups or subgroups, whereas significant diversity was observed between different groups. A syntenic analysis revealed that three PgBAM members (PgBAM1/4/5) showed a total of 11 syntenic relationships with the BAM members from Arabidopsis, kiwifruit, and Chinese white pear, respectively. Promoter binding motif prediction suggested potential roles for PgBAMs' genes in light, stress, hormones, and development signaling. Gene expression indicated that PgBAM4 was predominantly expressed in leaves, PgBAM7 in flowers, and PgBAM8 in roots and leaves and during fruit ripening, particularly in pericarp development. A transcriptome analysis identified the starch and sucrose metabolism pathway (map00500) as a key factor in the cold stress response of cold-sensitive cultivar 'Tunisia' seedlings. PgBAM4 exhibited remarkable expression and was closely associated with the cold-responsive BAM genes, characterized by a closer phylogenetic relationship, conserved catalytic residues, and similar secondary and tertiary structures. Moreover, the differences in soluble sugar levels and PgBAM4 expression were closely associated with the varying cold stress resistance observed between 'Tunisia' and 'Sanbai' seedlings. Furthermore, yeast one-hybrid assays confirmed that PgCBF7, a critical transcription factor for enhancing freezing tolerance, binds to the promoter region of PgBAM4. Our findings provide a systematic overview of the PgBAM gene family and shed new light on the regulatory mechanisms underlying cold stress tolerance in pomegranate.

The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) attracts attention in studies for its nutritional and medicinal properties. However, a recurring issue in the literature arises due to the multidisciplinary nature of these studies, leading to a mistaken repetition of basic botanical terms. The problem stems from the misapplication of the term "aril" to the pomegranate seed, despite the fruit being exariled, signifying the absence of an aril. This confusion may be attributed to the sarcotesta's appearance, resembling a complete aril, coupled with a lack of awareness in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, and cosmetics. This study specifically examines the Kingdom-variety pomegranate, due its economic importance in the fruit market. The fruits were evaluated at different developmental stages-initial, intermediate, and commercial. Magnification photography techniques were used to study the development state of the pomegranate fruits. The physiological studies confirm that the pomegranate seed constitutes the complete grain, with the juicy, sweet part surrounding it identified as the testa, not an aril. The findings underscore a persistent error in the existing literature, emphasizing the necessity for dissemination and education in future studies. A thorough grasp of pomegranate anatomy and precise use of terminology are indispensable for ensuring accuracy and rigor in scientific communication.

In this study, the effects of natural waste products such as extracts from C. coggygria leaves and Punica granatum L. peels were investigated against oxidative DNA damage induced by Fenton reaction. 8-OH-2'dG as a general marker of DNA damage on thymus DNA, and the bioactive compounds of extracts were measured by LC-MS/MS. Our results had shown that ethanol extracts of C. coggygria leaf and Punica granatum L. peel had a protective effect on oxidative damaged DNA. It was determined that the bioactive compounds of C. coggygria leaves (gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, myricetin, syringic acid and ethyl gallate as a major compounds) and Punica granatum L. peel (ellagic acid, abscisic acid, ethyl gallate, phlorizin, gallic acid, myricetin as major compounds) may have an important role in the protective effect against oxidative DNA damage. Therefore, Cotinus coggygria leaves and Punica granatum L. peel may have potential use in medicine or cosmetic fields.

The colorless ammonia gas has been a significant intermediate in the industrial sector. However, prolonged exposure to ammonia causes harmful effects to organs or even death. Herein, an environmentally friendly solid-state ammonia sensor was developed utilizing colorimetric polycaprolactone-co-polylactic acid nanofibrous membrane. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel contains anthocyanin (ACN) as a naturally occurring spectroscopic probe. A mordant (potassium aluminum sulfate) is used to immobilize the anthocyanin direct dyestuff inside nanofibers, generating mordant/anthocyanin (M/ACN) coordinated complex nanoparticles. When exposed to ammonia, the color change of anthocyanin-encapsulated polycaprolactone-co-polylactic acid nanofibrous membrane from purple to transparent was examined by absorbance spectra and CIE Lab color parameters. With a quick colorimetric shift, the polycaprolactone-co-polylactic acid fabric exhibits a detection limit of 5-150 mg/L. The absorbance spectra showed a hypsochromic shift when exposed to ammonia, displaying an absorption shift from 559 nm to 391 nm with an isosbestic point of 448 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that the polycaprolactone-co-polylactic acid nanofibers had a diameter of 75-125 nm, whereas transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that M/ACN nanoparticles exhibited diameters of 10-20 nm.

Polyphenols are natural secondary metabolites found in plants endowed with multiple biological activities (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, and anticancer). In view of these properties, they find many applications and are used as active ingredients in nutraceutical, food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic formulations. In accordance with green chemistry and circular economy strategies, they can also be recovered from agroindustrial waste and reused in various sectors, promoting sustainable processes. This review described structural characteristics, methods for extraction, biological properties, and applications of polyphenolic extracts obtained from two selected plant materials of the Mediterranean area as olive (Olea europaea L.) and pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) based on recent literature, highlighting future research perspectives.

Spain is one of the main contributors to global pomegranate production. Pomegranate presents a challenge for preservation at suboptimal temperatures. Preserving this fruit for an extended period is challenging due to its susceptibility to chilling injury (CI). For this reason, we have examined different postharvest treatments to extend the pomegranate shelf life and their potential impact on reducing CI. For this reason, two postharvest treatments have been applied: 1-Methylcyclopropene (1000 nL L-1 1-MCP) and methyl jasmonate vapors (0.01 mM MeJA), a natural elicitor found in many plant organs that induces a wide range of physiological processes, including the activation of defense mechanisms against stress. Following the application of these treatments and subsequent fruit storage at 2 °C for 90 days, maintenance of firmness and membrane integrity was observed. Additionally, a positive synergic effect was observed in these quality traits when combining both substances (1-MCP + MeJA), especially with regard to delaying weight loss, the external color evolution, and total polyphenol accumulation. On the other hand, MeJA treatment alone or in combination with 1-MCP also increased the anthocyanin content in arils, thereby enhancing the fruit quality. In general, the best results were observed when these two different technologies were applied as a combined treatment, especially in terms of maintaining quality traits such as fruit firmness and total acidity and reducing weight loss and CI. This is the first time that these two substances have been tested together in any fruit species, and their simultaneous application in the same container represents an innovative approach that could be an interesting tool for commercial purposes.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) belongs to the Punicaceae plant family. It is an important fruit due to its nutritional and medicinal properties. Pomegranates are widely distributed around the world and, therefore, have a broad genetic diversity, resulting in differences in their phytochemical composition. The scientific community has focused on the positive health effects of pomegranate as a whole, but the different varieties have rarely been compared according to their bioactive compounds and bioactivity. This review aims to provide a holistic overview of the current knowledge on the bioactivity of pomegranate trees, with an emphasis on differentiating both the varieties and the different plant parts. This review intends to provide a general and organized overview of the accumulated knowledge on pomegranates, the identification of the most bioactive varieties, their potential consumption pathways and seeks to provide knowledge on the present gaps to guide future research.

@#Punica granatum L.(pomegranate) is a medicinal plant belonging to the genus Punica Linn..The peel, seed, flower, leaf and root of P.granatum is widely used as traditional medicine in China.Phytochemical studies showed that the major chemical constituents of P.granatum were tannins, flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, fatty acids, etc.Biological studies on extracts and active ingredients of P.granatum show some bioactivities, such as antioxidant, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antibacterial activities.Herein, the chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of different parts of pomegranate were reviewed, providing a theoretical basis for the further research and utilization of pomegranate.

ABSTRACT: The use of machine vision to recognize mature pomegranates in natural environments is of major significance in improving the applicability and work efficiency of picking robots. By analyzing the color characteristics of color images of mature pomegranates under different illumination conditions, the feasibility of the YCbCr color model for pomegranate image recognition under different illumination conditions was proven. First, the Cr component map of pomegranate image is selected and then the pomegranate fruit is segmented by the kernel fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm to obtain the pomegranate image. Contrast experiments of pomegranate image segmentation under different illumination conditions were then performed using the proposed kernel fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm, the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm, the Otsu algorithm and the threshold segmentation algorithm. Results of the experiments verified the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm.


RESUMO: O uso de máquina para reconhecer romãs maduras em ambientes naturais é de grande importância para melhorar a aplicabilidade e a eficiência do trabalho de robôs de colheita. Ao analisar as características de cor das imagens coloridas de romãs maduras sob diferentes condições de iluminação, a viabilidade do modelo de cores YCbCr para o reconhecimento de imagens de romãs sob diferentes condições de iluminação foi comprovada. Primeiro, o mapa do componente Cr da imagem da romã é selecionado e, em seguida, o fruto da romãzeira é segmentado pelo algoritmo de agrupamento C-means fuzzy do kernel para obter a imagem da romã. Experimentos contrastados de segmentação de imagens de romã sob diferentes condições de iluminação foram então realizados usando o algoritmo proposto de agrupamento C-means fuzzy, o algoritmo fuzzy de agrupamento C-means, o algoritmo Otsu e o algoritmo de segmentação de limiares. Os resultados dos experimentos verificaram a efetividade e superioridade do algoritmo proposto.

A resistência bacteriana tem aumentado progressivamente no mundo, assim, há necessidade de novas opções de tratamentos. A fitoterapia tem ganhado notoriedade para combater infecções, principalmente as causadas por bactérias resistentes aos antibacterianos disponíveis. Diante do exposto, o presente estudo teve como objetivo preparar e analisar a composição fitoquímica e a ação antibacteriana dos extratos hidroetanólicos de canela (EHC) e romã (EHR) isolados e associados frente culturas planctônicas e biofilmes de cepas padrão e clínicas de Acinetobacter baumannii e Pseudomonas aeruginosa, além disso, analisar a ação citotóxica dos extratos em queratinócitos humanos (HaCat). Para isso, os EHC e EHR foram preparados e quantificado o teor de sólidos solúveis. Posteriormente, foi quantificado o teor de flavonoides e fenóis totais, análise antioxidante por meio da redução do radical 2,2'-difenil-1-picrilhidrazila (DPPH), e a fitoquímica por cromatografia líquida (HPLC). Em relação a ação antibacteriana dos extratos, foi aplicado o teste de microdiluição em caldo (CLSI ­ M7-A9) e a ação sinérgica realizada por meio do ensaio de checkerboard. As concentrações mais efetivas foram analisadas sobre biofilmes em formação (prevenção) e biofilmes formados (tratamento de 24 h), e quantificada a viabilidade por meio do teste colorimétrico MTT. Para avaliar a citotoxidade, os tratamentos foram aplicados sobre cultura celular de HaCat por 24 h e analisados por meio do teste colorimétrico MTT. A análise estatística foi realizada com 5% de significância (p<0.05), analisados pelo método ANOVA complementado pelo Teste de Tukey. Os resultados demonstraram que os EHC e EHR possuem ação antioxidante e presença de fitocompostos. Os extratos apresentaram ação antibacteriana para todas as cepas avaliadas, quando os mesmos foram associados, obteve-se concentrações sinérgicas para as cepas clínicas de A. baumannii. Em relação a ação antibiofilme, o EHC inibiu a formação em 95% e EHR em 96% do biofilme de #Ab 1, enquanto a cepa #Pa 2 teve 92% e 93% de inibição quando em contato com EHC e EHR, respectivamente. Após tratamento de 24 h em biofilmes formados, as reduções da viabilidade foram de 72% para as cepas #Ab 2 e #Ab 3 quando em contato com o EHC, já EHR inibiu em 83% a viabilidade da cepa #Ab ATCC. Para P. aeruginosa (#Pa 2), as reduções da viabilidade foram de 84% e 88,5% quando tratados com EHC e EHR, respectivamente. A avaliação da citotoxicidade em HaCat demonstrou que após tratamentos com diferentes concentrações dos extratos a viabilidade celular se manteve acima de 70% em todos os grupos. Diante disso, conclui-se que os EHC e EHR apresentam importante ação antioxidante e antibacteriana, tanto em culturas planctônicas quanto em biofilmes, e não apresentaram efeitos citotóxicos na faixa de concentração testada. Bacterial resistance has progressively increased in the world, thus, there is a need for new treatment options. Phytotherapy has gained notoriety for fighting infections, mainly those caused by bacteria resistant to available antibacterials. In view of the above, the present study aimed to prepare and analyze the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial action of hydroethanolic extracts of cinnamon (EHC) and pomegranate (EHR) isolated and associated against planktonic cultures and biofilms of standard and clinical strains of Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in addition, analyze the cytotoxic action of the extracts on human keratinocytes (HaCat). For this, the EHC and EHR were prepared and the soluble solids content was quantified. Subsequently, the content of flavonoids and total phenols, antioxidant analysis through the reduction of the radical 2,2'-diphenyl1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and phytochemistry by liquid chromatography (HPLC) were quantified. Regarding the antimicrobial action of the extracts, the broth microdilution test (CLSI ­ M7-A9) was applied and the synergistic action was performed through the checkerboard test. The most effective concentrations were analyzed on forming biofilms (prevention) and formed biofilms (24 h treatment), and viability was quantified using the MTT colorimetric test. To evaluate the cytotoxicity, the treatments were applied on HaCat cell culture for 24 h and analyzed using the MTT colorimetric test. Statistical analysis was performed with 5% significance (p<0.05), analyzed by the ANOVA method complemented by the Tukey test. The results showed that the EHC and EHR have antioxidant action and presence of phytocompounds. The extracts showed antibacterial action for all evaluated strains, when they were associated, synergistic concentrations were obtained for the clinical strains of A. baumannii. Regarding the antibiofilm action, EHC inhibited formation by 95% and EHR by 96% of the #Ab 1 biofilm, while the #Pa 2 strain had 92% and 93% inhibition when in contact with EHC and EHR, respectively. After 24 h treatment in formed biofilms, viability reductions were 72% for strains #Ab 2 and #Ab 3 when in contact with EHC, whereas EHR inhibited the viability of strain #Ab ATCC by 83%. For P. aeruginosa (#Pa 2), viability reductions were 84% and 88.5% when treated with EHC and EHR, respectively. The evaluation of cytotoxicity in HaCat showed that after treatments with different concentrations of extracts, cell viability remained above 70% in all groups. Therefore, it is concluded that EHC and EHR have important antioxidant and antibacterial action, both in planktonic cultures and in biofilms, and did not show cytotoxic effects in the tested concentration range. AIM To optimize the subcritical aqueous extraction for polysaccharides from the leaves of Punica granatum L.and to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity.METHODS With reaction pressure,solid-liquid ratio,extraction time and extraction temperature as influencing factors,yield of polysaccharides as an evalution index,the extraction was optimized by Box-Behnken method on the basis of single factor test.Then the scavenging effects of polysaccharides on hydroxyl free radical,superoxide anion and DPPH free radical were detected.RESULTS The optimal conditions were determined to be 5 MPa for reaction pressure,1 ∶ 27 for solid-liquid ratio,11 min for extraction time,and 155 ℃ for extraction temperature,the yield of polysaccharides was 1.809%.There was a dose-effect relationship between scavenging rate and polysaccharides' concentration.0.1 mg/mL Polysaccharides displayed the strongest scavenging effects on hydroxyl free radical,superoxide anion and DPPH free radical with the clearance rates of 57.36%,70.51% and 58.02%,respectively.CONCLUSION This stable and reliable method can be used for the subcritical aqueous extraction for polysaccharides from P.granatum leaves with obvious in vitro antioxidant activity.

RESUMO

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a common gastrointestinal disease in which the etiology and pathogenesis are still unclear. Generally speaking, it is caused by environment, inheritance, and immune. The related factors include immune system, oxidative stress, microflora in gastrointestinal tract, NF-κB, NO, COX-2, LB4, and the correlation factors. There are many plants that are effective to inflammatory bowel disease in traditional Uygur medicine, such as Solanum nigrum, Quercus infectoria, and Punica granatum. For some of these plants, only one or two mechanisms of action have been found. Besides, some constituents of them are effective to anti-inflammatory bowel disease. This article reviewed the role of factors in IBD and the mechanism of anti-inflammatory bowel disease of traditional Uygur medicine.

RESUMO O objetivo desse estudo foi observar a ação da romã (Punica granatum L.) em estomatites induzidas por queimaduras no dorso da língua de ratos Wistar. Foram utilizados 24 ratos Wistar machos adultos, provenientes do Biotério da UNIVASF. Foram formados quatro grupos (G1: Polpa da romã por gavagem; G2: Polpa da romã por gavagem + aplicação local do chá da casca do fruto; G3: aplicação local do chá da casca do fruto e G4: Controle negativo). As queimaduras foram confeccionadas com instrumental odontológico padrão. Os tratamentos foram realizados duas vezes ao dia, durante 14 dias. Metade dos animais de cada grupo (n=3) foi eutanasiada no sétimo dia de experimentação, enquanto o restante foi eutanasiado no 14º dia. As línguas foram removidas e fixadas com formaldeído a 10% tamponado, processadas com cortes de 5 µm e coradas em HE. Clinicamente, os animais do grupo G2 tiveram melhores resultados. Na análise histológica qualitativa foi avaliada a reepitelização e os graus de inflamação numa escala de 0 a 4. Na análise estatística, utilizou-se o teste Qui-quadrado de Pearson. Houve significância estatística (p=0,026 e p=0,023) quando se comparou o tratamento com os graus de reepitelização e inflamação nos quatro grupos estudados. O grupo G2 apresentou cicatrização completa com 14 dias. Os piores escores obtidos foram atribuídos ao Grupo G4 nos dois parâmetros de avaliação qualitativa. Diante dos resultados obtidos, observa-se que a romã (Punica granatum L.) possui ação cicatrizante na mucosa lingual de ratos Wistar.


ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to observe the action of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) on stomatitis induced burns on the dorso-lingual musosa in Wistar rats. Twenty-four male, adult Wister albino rats were used, from the bioterium of UNIVASF. There were four groups (G1: Pomegranate juice by gavage; G2: Pomegranate juice by gavage + local application of fruit peel tea; G3: Local application of fruit peel tea only and G4: a negative control). The burns were made with standard dental instruments. The treatments were performed twice a day for 14 days. Half the animals in each group (n = 3) were euthanized on the seventh day of experimentation, while the remainder were euthanized on day 14. The tongues were removed and fixed with a 10% formaldehyde buffer, processed as 5µm sections and stained with HE. Clinically the animals treated with tea showed better healing. For statistical analysis the Pearson chi-squared test was used. There was a statistical significance (p = 0.026 and p = 0.023) when compared to treatment with the degree of re-epithelialization and inflammation of the four groups studied. The G2 group showed complete healing within 14 days. The worst scores were found in the G4 group in both qualitative assessment parameters. Based on these results, it was observed that pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) has a healing action on the lingual mucosa of Wistar rats.
