Fine roots play a key role in carbon, nutrient, and water biogeochemical cycles in forest ecosystems. However, inter-annual dynamics of fine root production, mortality, and turnover on the basis of long-term measurement have been less studied. Here, field scanning rhizotrons were employed for tracking fine root by branch order over a 6 years period in a larch plantation. For total fine roots, from the first- to the fifth-order roots, annual root length production, length mortality, standing crops, and turnover rate varied up to 3.4, 2.3, 1.5, and 2.3-folds during the study period, respectively. The inter-annual variability of those roots indices in the first-order and the second-order roots were greater than that of the higher order (third- to fifth-order) roots. The turnover rate was markedly larger for the first-order roots than for the higher order roots, showing the greatest variability up to 20 times. Seasonal dynamics of root length production followed a general concentrated pattern with peak typically occurring in June or July, whereas root length mortality followed a general bimodal mortality pattern with the dominant peak in May and the secondary peak in August or October. Furthermore, the seasonal patterns of root length production and mortality were similar across years, especially for the first-order and the second-order roots. These results from long-term observation were beneficial for reducing uncertainty of characterizing fine root demography in consideration of large variation among years. Our findings highlight it is important for better understanding of fine root dynamics and determining root demography through distinguishing observation years and root branch orders.

RESUMO

The statistics of COVID-19 cases exhibits seasonal fluctuations in many countries. In this paper, we propose a COVID-19 epidemic model with seasonality and define the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text] for the disease transmission. It is proved that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable when [Formula: see text], while the disease is uniformly persistent and there exists at least one positive periodic solution when [Formula: see text]. Numerically, we observe that there is a globally asymptotically stable positive periodic solution in the case of [Formula: see text]. Further, we conduct a case study of the COVID-19 transmission in the USA by using statistical data.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the dynamical behavior of dengue transmission is essential in designing control strategies. Mathematical models have become an important tool in describing the dynamics of a vector borne disease. Classical compartmental models are well-known method used to identify the dynamical behavior of spread of a vector borne disease. Due to use of fixed model parameters, the results of classical compartmental models do not match realistic nature. The aim of this study is to introduce time in varying model parameters, modify the classical compartmental model by improving its predictability power. RESULTS: In this study, per-capita vector density has been chosen as the time in varying model parameter. The dengue incidences, rainfall and temperature data in urban Colombo are analyzed using Fourier mathematical analysis tool. Further, periodic pattern of the reported dengue incidences and meteorological data and correlation of dengue incidences with meteorological data are identified to determine climate data-driven per-capita vector density parameter function. By considering that the vector dynamics occurs in faster time scale compares to host dynamics, a two dimensional data-driven compartmental model is derived with aid of classical compartmental models. Moreover, a function for per-capita vector density is introduced to capture the seasonal pattern of the disease according to the effect of climate factors in urban Colombo. CONCLUSIONS: The two dimensional data-driven compartmental model can be used to predict weekly dengue incidences upto 4 weeks. Accuracy of the model is evaluated using relative error function and the model can be used to predict more than 75% accurate data.

OBJECTIVE: Seasonal pattern (SP) is a bipolar disorder (BD) specifier that indicates a tendency towards affective relapses during specific moments of the year. SP affects 15%-25% of BD patients. In the past, SP was applied only to depressive relapses while, in DSM-5, SP may be applied to both depressive and (hypo)manic episodes. We examined the association between different clinical correlates of BD and SP according to its current definition in a cohort of patients with BD type I (BDI) and II (BDII). METHODS: Patients were recruited from a specialized unit and assessed according to the season of relapse and type of episode per season. SP and non-SP patients were compared looking into sociodemographic and clinical correlates. Significant variables at univariate comparisons were included in multivariate logistic regression with SP as the dependent variable. RESULTS: 708 patients were enrolled (503 BDI, 205 BDII), and 117 (16.5%) fulfilled DSM-5 criteria for SP. The mean age was 45.3 years (SD = 14.18), and 389 were female (54.9%). The logistic regression model included a significant contribution of BDII (OR = 2.23, CI 1.4-3.55), family history of mood disorder (OR = 1.97, CI 1.29-3.01), undetermined predominant polarity (OR = 0.44, CI 0.28-0.70), and aggressive behavior (OR = 0.42, CI 0.23-0.75). CONCLUSION: Our results outline a novel positive association of SP with undetermined predominant polarity, BDII, family history of mood disorder, and with fewer aggressiveness-related symptoms. Seasonality is associated with a biphasic pattern with similar dominance of (hypo)mania and depression and is more frequent in BDII as compared to BDI. Seasonal episodes may be easier to predict, but difficult to prevent.

Squaric acid dibutyl ester (SADBE) as topical immunotherapy is a good alternative in patients with refractory alopecia areata. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SADBE treatment in alopecia areata (AA) and alopecia totalis/alopecia universalis (AT/AU) patients and determine the prognostic factors affecting treatment response. Data obtained from 34 (AA/AT/AU) patients treated with SADBE were analyzed retrospectively. Of the 34 patients, 16 (47.1%) were female and 18 (52.9%) were male. Sufficient responses were obtained in 19 (55.9%) patients. About 9 of the 19 patients (47.4%) with sufficient response reached a cosmetically acceptable level. As the severity of disease subsided, response to treatment increased. A better response was obtained when the disease onset in the spring and winter. Patients with a disease duration between 1 and 5 years responded better to the SADBE treatment compared to those with a disease shorter than 1 year and longer than 5 years. Severity of the disease, onset season of the disease, number of flares, duration of disease, and low levels of vitamin D in adult patients were observed to affect the SADBE response negatively.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal Affective Disorder is a recurrent depressive disorder which usually begins in the fall/winter and enters into remission in the spring/summer, although in some cases may occur in the summer with remission in the autumn-winter. In this study the authors evaluated the association between seasonal changes in mood and behavior with psychiatric disturbance. METHOD: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. Participants, students attending higher education and vocational courses (N = 324), were evaluated with the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ) and the Screening Scale for Mental Health (ER80). RESULTS: Among the respondents, 12.7% showed seasonal affective disorder (SAD), 29.0% showed subsyndromal seasonal affective disorder (s-SAD) and 58.3% did not show significant seasonal affective symptomatology. As for psychiatric morbidity, 36.6% of subjects with SAD and 13.8% of those with s-SAD were considered "psychiatric cases" whereas for subjects without SAD this value was only 3.2%. CONCLUSIONS: There is a statistically significant association between psychiatric morbidity and seasonal affective disorder. This association corroborates the importance of the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire in screening for seasonal fluctuations in mood and behavior related disorders, and the clinical need for recognition of these conditions, particularly associated suffering and disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal patterns in the effect of sunlight on depression, where depression decreases when sunlight increases, have been observed in previous studies. In this study, we demonstrate a bimodal effect of sunlight on depression - short-term increases in sunlight increase depression and long-term increases in sunlight decrease depression. The analysis showed that the significant effect of sunlight is temporary and appears only when seasonal changes are severe within a given year. METHODS: We analyzed approximately 530,000 cases where patients visited hospital for depression in Korea from January 1 to December 31, 2016. We measured the daily average amount of sunlight and daily sunlight for the 30 days previous to the day of measurement using data from 96 weather stations. To analyze the effect of sunlight, several climatic variables and local dummies were added to the negative binomial model, and the period in which the effect of sunlight was significant was derived as a term of the interaction between the month variable and sunlight. RESULTS: When the average effects of climatic factors such as temperature, precipitation, and humidity were removed, the number of cases of depression increased when the daily average amount of sunlight increased [IRR = 1.024 (95% CI: 1.009 to 1.039)]; this effect was significant only in January and May. The number of cases of depression decreased with higher daily average sunlight for the previous 30 days increasing [IRR = 0.917 (95% CI: 0.892 to 0.944)], and this effect was significant only in January, March, and May. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of sunlight on depression appears in both the short and long terms, but the effect is significant only for limited periods. The data examined in this study supports a pattern where short-term daily sunlight increases depression and daily sunlight for the previous 30 days decreases depression.

Most evidence on seasonal admission patterns for schizophrenia derives from the Northern Hemisphere with results from the Southern Hemisphere less documented. This study examines seasonal patterns in hospital admissions due to schizophrenia in Queensland, Australia, a large area that has a range of different climatic features. Daily hospital admissions data for people with the primary diagnosis of schizophrenia were collected from Queensland Health Department for the period from January 1996 to December 2015. A generalised linear regression model with Quasi-Poisson distribution was used to assess seasonal admission patterns across different climatic regions. The evidence for seasonality was also explored in subgroups that had different socio-demographic characteristics or history of prior hospitalisation for psychiatric disorders. Overall, a significant winter pattern (RR 1.05, 95%CI 1.01-1.13) was found with a peak in August (RR 1.08, 95%CI 1.03-1.17) in temperate Southeast Queensland. However, the hot humid North and Far North Queensland showed a peak in October (RR 1.10, 95%CI 1.02-1.22). Males (RR 1.11, 95%CI 1.07-1.14), people aged 40-59 years old (RR 1.10, 95%CI 1.05-1.15) and those who had never married (RR 1.09, 95%CI 1.06-1.12), were Australian by birth (RR 1.07, 95%CI 1.04-1.10) or were unemployed (RR 1.13, 95%CI 1.09-1.18) had significantly higher risk for hospital admissions, particularly during the winter months. The seasonal admission pattern for schizophrenia did not change significantly according to admission status and history of outpatient or community psychiatric treatment. The study found some evidence for seasonality of hospital admissions for schizophrenia that differed from northern tropical to southern temperate regions of Queensland.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to assess the impact of seasonal pattern on several clinical dimensions in inpatients with a current major depressive episode and to evaluate clinical differences between unipolar and bipolar depression according to seasonal pattern. METHODS: Study participants were 300 patients affected by major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD) currently experiencing a major depressive episode (MDE) and were recruited at three University Medical Centres in Italy. All study subjects completed several evaluation scales for depressive and hypomanic symptoms, quality of life and functioning, impulsiveness, and seasonal pattern. RESULTS: Several differences between BD with and without seasonal pattern, MDD with and without seasonal pattern but in particular between BD and MDD with seasonal pattern were found. Patients with MDE with seasonal pattern had more frequently received a longitudinal diagnosis of BD. CONCLUSIONS: A large number of patients with BD and seasonal pattern, but also a considerable number of patients with MDD and seasonal pattern, endorsed manic items during a current MDE. Seasonal pattern should be associated with a concept of bipolarity in mood disorders and not only related to bipolar disorder. A correct identification of seasonal patterns may lead to the implementation of personalised pharmacological treatment approaches.KEY POINTSHigh prevalence of mixed features in mood disorders with seasonal pattern, supporting the need for a dimensional approach to major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.Significant percentage of patients with a primary diagnosis of major depressive disorder had seasonal pattern.Significant percentage of patients with a primary diagnosis of major depressive disorder reported (hypo)manic symptomatology.

Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with heterogeneous aetiology mostly affecting younger people and causing immense disability. Seasonal patterns may be observed in schizophrenia hospital admissions with possible association with changing climatic parameters and socio-demographic characteristics. This study critically reviewed studies that have assessed seasonal variations of hospital admissions for schizophrenia and/or explored an association with climate parameters and/or other potential factors. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted using electronic databases (e.g. MEDLINE, Science Direct, PsycINFO, Pub Med) from inception to February 29, 2020. Thirty five papers were identified, of which only six (17.1%) examined evidence for a seasonal pattern or monthly excess of hospital admissions and the remaining twenty nine (82.9%) assessed climatic and socio-demographic attributes relating to the seasonal pattern or increased hospitalisation for schizophrenia. While most studies reported a summer peak in hospital admission rates, other studies reported a winter peak. Most of the evidence indicated that higher temperatures (> 28 °C) were positively correlated with schizophrenia admission rates. The individual effects of other climatic parameters (e.g. relative humidity, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, sunlight) were less frequently assessed. Males, people of 21-60 years old, and those married were more vulnerable to climatic variability specifically to higher temperatures. Further studies using large sample sizes, analysis of a wide range of interacting environmental variables and sophisticated statistical approaches are needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms involved. This will also provide more reliable statistical evidence that will help in the prevention and better management of cases.

BACKGROUND: few studies had investigated seasonal pattern of recurrent falls. OBJECTIVE: to examine seasonal pattern of both single and recurrent falls amongst community-dwelling older adults first applying for long-term care (LTC) services. METHODS: a cohort of 89,100 community-dwelling Hong Kong older adults aged 65 and over first applying for LTC services from 2005 to 2014 was obtained. Logistic regression models were used to examine seasonal pattern in single and recurrent falls, whilst controlling for gender, age and year. RESULTS: amongst 89,100 older adults, about 32% fell in past 90 days. Amongst the fallers, 34% fell recurrently. In 2014, the incidences of all fall, single fall and recurrent fall were 1.95, 0.80 and 1.15 per person-years, respectively. For single falls, the 90-day fall risk was highest during November to February with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.29 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.19-1.41), compared with the lowest one during July to October. For recurrent falls, the highest OR for 90-day risk was highest during November to February (1.46, 95% CI 1.31-1.64) as well. CONCLUSIONS: single and recurrent falls both peaked during winter months. Interventions, such as implementing educational publicity and sending reminder to older adults in fall season, may be considered.

To interpret the relationship of the seasonal pattern of air pollution exposure associated with increased risk of congenital anomalies (CA) and the trimester-specific effects. In this work, 55,428 hospital records with 847 doctor-diagnosed CA from July 2013 to December 2016 were collected in Hohhot, China. Maternal exposure to critical air pollutants (SO2, CO, PM10, O3, NO2 and PM2.5) were estimated using an inverse distance weighted (IDW) method on the basis of the ambient air quality monitoring stations. Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the association of CA (in terms of odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI)) in three trimesters with heating/none heating season exposure. The results showed that CO exposure was found a significant association with ORs (95% CI) 1.58 (1.09, 2.27) changing from IQR2-3 and 1.40 (1.01, 1.93) changing from IQR3-IQR4 in 1st trimester and 1.51 (1.12, 2.04) changing from IQR2-3 in 2nd trimester, respectively. PM10 also presented significant association with ORs (95% CI) 1.42(1.08, 1.86) changing from IQR3-4 in 2nd trimester. Exposure effects were found more obvious in heating season, i.e. CO exposure levels were associated with the risks of CA with IQR changing ORs (95% CI) of 5.21(2.02, 7.44), 2.24 (1.21, 4.15) and 1.84 (1.10, 3.11) in 1st trimester, respectively; PM2.5 exposure levels were associated with the risks of CA with IQR changing ORs (95% CI) of 3.76 (1.48, 6.55), 2.45 (1.10, 5.44) and 3.30 (1.63, 6.67) in 2nd trimester, respectively. Our findings suggested some positive associations of pregnancy and CA with maternal exposure to ambient CO and PM2.5 during the 1st and 2nd trimester after controlling for maternal comorbidities general covariates and other pollutants. PM10 was also found significantly associated with increased risk of CA in 2nd trimester besides seasons. There was no association found in 3rd trimester.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Studies concerning seasonal variations and the impact of air temperature on oesophageal variceal bleeding have yielded conflicting results. We aimed to explore the impact of air temperature on the occurrence of variceal bleeding. METHODS: A case-crossover study design was employed, and two cohorts were used, including the NHI-EVB cohort from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan from 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2010, and the VGH-EVB cohort from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, from 4 May 2002 to 31 December 2010. A conditional logistic regression model was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: In total, 2542 cases from the NHI-EVB cohort and 220 cases from the VGH-EVB cohort were analysed. Our analysis showed that low air temperature (LAT) increased the risk of variceal bleeding regardless of age, sex, decompensated cirrhosis, Child-Pugh classification, aetiology of liver disease and concomitant hepatocellular carcinoma; the lag effect was also observed. The ORs per 5°C decrease in daily mean air temperature were 1.144 (95% CI, 1.060-1.235) for the NHI-EVB cohort and 1.307 (95% CI: 1.031-1.658) for the VGH-EVB cohort. Oesophageal variceal bleeding in patients with small varices, end-stage liver disease score ≧15 or those using non-selective beta blockers was not influenced by air temperature. CONCLUSIONS: Patients have higher risk of oesophageal variceal bleeding at low air temperature regardless of age, sex, aetiology of cirrhosis, Child-Pugh classification, decompensated cirrhosis and concomitant hepatocellular carcinoma and can be protected by use non-selective beta blockers.

Heliothis viriplaca (Hüfnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an important polyphagous pest of beans, cotton, maize, and alfalfa worldwide. H. viriplaca is a long-distance migrant, and if so, what pattern of seasonal migration this species exhibits in northern China remains unknown. In this study, in order to determine the seasonal migration of H. viriplaca in northern China, the combination of searchlight trapping and ovarian dissection was carried out on an isolated small island in the center of the Bohai Strait during 2003-2014. The results confirmed that H. viriplaca undertakes long-distance migration on the prevailing winds of the East Asian monsoon airflows. This species exhibited a regular pattern of seasonal migration across the sea from May to October, but there was considerable yearly and monthly variation in the trapped numbers, with the majority being trapped in summer (67.99 ± 6.54%). The mean period when migration was detectable at the island was 116.5 ± 5.6 days from 2003 to 2014, with the shortest time span of 74 days in 2013 and the longest of 144 days in 2005. Trapped females in May and June showed a relatively higher mating rates and some degree of ovarian development when compared with July, August and September, suggesting the migration of this species is not completely bound by the 'oogenesis-flight syndrome'. These findings will be helpful to improve the forecasting system and managing strategies of H. viriplaca.

OBJECTIVES: Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, and disproportionately affects Indigenous populations. Seasonal suicide patterns are variable in the literature, and could offer novel approaches to the timing and focus of prevention efforts if better understood. With a suicide surveillance system in place since 1989, this study offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore seasonal variations in both fatal and non-fatal suicide behavior in an Indigenous Arctic region. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: In this descriptive study, we analyzed data collected from 1990 to 2009 in the rural northwest region of Alaska, both graphically and using the chi-squared test for multinomials. RESULTS: We found a significant monthly variation for suicide attempts, with a peak in suicide behavior observed between April and August (P = 0.0002). Monthly variation was more pronounced among individuals ≤29 years of age, and was present in both males and females, although the seasonal pattern differed by sex. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings of a significant seasonal pattern in suicide behavior, with monthly variation (summer peak) in non-fatal suicide behavior among younger age groups, and among both males and females can assist planners in targeting subpopulations for prevention at different times of the year.

Introduction: This study examines the seasonal and genetic characteristics of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Henan from 2017 to 2023. Methods: Samples from patients with acute respiratory infection (ARI) testing positive for HMPV were subjected to real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction The G gene was amplified and sequenced from these samples for epidemiological and phylogenetic analysis. Results: We enrolled 2,707 ARI patients from October 2017 to March 2023, finding an HMPV positivity rate of 6.17% (167/2,707). Children under five exhibited the highest infection rate at 7.78% (138/1,774). The 2018 and 2019 HMPV outbreaks predominantly occurred in spring (March to May), with peak positivity rates of 31.11% in May 2018 and 19.57% in May 2019. A notable increase occurred in November 2020, when positivity reached a historic high of 42.11%, continuing until January 2021. From February 2021 through March 2023, no significant seasonal peaks were observed, with rates ranging from 0% to 8.70%. Out of 81 G gene sequences analyzed, 46.91% (38/81) were identified as subtype A (A2c: 45.67%, 37/81; A2b: 1.23%, 1/81) and 53.09% (43/81) as subtype B (B1: 9.88%, 8/81; B2: 43.21%, 35/81). Notably, an AAABBA switch pattern was observed in HMPV subtypes. The dominant strains were A2c111nt-dup in subtype A and B2 in subtype B. Conclusions: Six years of surveillance in Henan Province has detailed the seasonal and genetic dynamics of HMPV, contributing valuable insights for the control and prevention of HMPV infections in China. These findings support the development of targeted HMPV vaccines and immunization strategies.

Background The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate the seasonal patterns of idiopathic facial nerve paralysis, specifically Bell's palsy, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study aimed to determine if there is a correlation between cold weather and the incidence of Bell's palsy, as well as to examine the relationship between age, gender, comorbidities, and the development of the disease. Methodology Data were collected from King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between 2016 and 2021. Electronic medical records of adult patients diagnosed with idiopathic facial paralysis were reviewed. Patients with facial paralysis caused by known illnesses were excluded. Demographic information, clinical characteristics, and the course of the disease were analyzed using SPSS version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results The study included 136 Bell's palsy patients, with a mean age of 39.9 years. Males represented 58.1% (79) of the sample, and the right side of the face was more commonly affected in 71 (52.2%) patients. The majority of patients had House-Brackmann grade III (51, 37.5%). The monthly distribution showed a higher number of Bell's palsy cases during the winter months, particularly December, October, and November, but the seasonal distribution did not yield a statistically significant difference in incidence. Conclusions While this study observed a higher incidence of Bell's palsy during the winter months, it did not establish a statistically significant correlation between cold temperatures and the onset of Bell's palsy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, the study found that Bell's palsy predominantly affects middle-aged males, and comorbidities did not appear to be significant risk factors for the development of the disease. This research lays the groundwork for future investigations into the relationship between weather and the pathogenesis of Bell's palsy in the region.

AIMS: The main aim of the current study was to measure physical activity, sedentary behaviors and sleep levels across the different seasons in people with type 1 diabetes in Kuwait. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2021 to September 2022. Physical activity and sleep metrics were measured over a 7-day period with a wrist-worn accelerometer (GENEActiv). Overall physical activity was measured as a Euclidean Norm Minus One in milli gravitational units (mg). Accelerometer metrics were compared across the seasons and between the sex. RESULTS: A total of 784 people with type 1 diabetes participated. Mean daily physical activity was 25.2 mg (SD = 7.3). Seasonal differences were seen in overall physical activity (p = 0.05), inactivity (p = 0.04), light activity (p = 0.001), the intensity gradient (p = 0.001) and sleep efficiency (p = 0.02). Poorer metrics were generally seen in Spring and Summer. Overall physical activity, moderate and vigorous physical activity, and inactivity were significantly higher in males compared to females (p ≤ 0.02). Females had a longer sleeping duration (p = 0.02), and higher sleep efficiency (p = 0.04) and light physical activity (p = 0.01). Overall physical activity and the intensity gradient were negatively associated with HbA1c (both p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Physical activity levels were generally low and sleep poor in people with type 1 diabetes in Kuwait and these varied by sex and season. The current data are useful to target and develop interventions to improve physical activity and glycemic control.

The ecology and environment of the Yellow River Basin is threatened by fluoride and nitrate contamination induced by anthropogenic activity and geogenic factors. As a result, deciphering the spatio-temporal variability of fluoride and nitrate contamination in this area remains a challenge. Three hundred eighty-six samples of surface water and groundwater from the Inner Mongolia Reaches of the Yellow River Basin were taken for this investigation. According to the results of the multivariate statistical and geostatistical analyses, the fluoride pollution was primarily discovered in the middle and lower reaches of the study area and was determined to be more severe during the dry season. In contrast, nitrate contamination was found to be more severe during the wet season while being widely distributed in groundwater and concentrated in areas with intensive agricultural activities. The primary mechanisms governing the spatial-seasonal patterns of NO3- and F- pollution were shown by the principal component analysis, isotopic, and hydrochemical diagrams. The water-rock interaction or evaporation was crucial in the enrichment of F-. The human inputs (e.g., fertilizer or sewage) dominated fluoride and nitrate contamination. Additionally, the alkaline environment played a role in the generation of NO3- and F-. The health risk assessment concluded that the threat of fluoride contamination was greater than that of nitrate contamination. Children faced the greatest health risks, followed by females and males. These findings would serve as a guide for water management and pollution control in the Yellow River Basin.

Background: It is important to understand the factors associated with seasonal asthma attacks among children so we can evaluate them appropriately. Aim: The study examined the seasonal variation of asthma-related emergency department visits by children in Istanbul. Methods: This descriptive study examined all paediatric patients with asthma who visited the paediatric emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Istanbul, Türkiye, between January 2017 and December 2022. Asthma diagnosis was based on physical examination and clinical history of the patients and asthma-related visits during winter, spring, summer, and autumn were considered repeated measurements. Data analysis was done using SPSS 25.0. Results: Visits by asthmatic children to the emergency department constituted 4.9% of all visits. Some 56.9% of the asthmatic children were male and 43.1% were female. Asthma-related emergency department visits were 10.4% in 2017 and 3.6% in 2022. Visits to paediatric emergency departments due to asthma decreased from 19 685 in 2017 to 7485 in 2022. Between 2017 and 2022, children aged 0-5 years represented the highest proportion of visits (64-72.8%). Asthmatic children aged 0-5 years and 6-11 years were admitted to the hospital mostly in January (13.5%, 13.5%) and December (12.8%, 14.0%). In the age group 12-18 years, the visits occurred mostly in January (11.9%) and March (11.2%). Conclusion: The frequency and number of asthma-related visits to the paediatric emergency department decreased over the 6-year period of this study. There were increases in visits in October, November, December, and January, and decreases in June, July and August.
