INTRODUCTION: Despite increasing numbers of working-age cancer survivors, evidence on their future work-related circumstances is limited. This study examined their future sick leave, disability pension, and unemployment benefits compared to matched cancer-free individuals. METHODS: A matched cohort study was conducted using nationwide Swedish registers. In total, 94,411 individuals aged 25 to 59 years when diagnosed with incident cancer in 2001-2012 and who returned to work after cancer were compared with their matched cancer-free individuals (N = 354,814). Follow-up started from the year before cancer diagnosis and continued up to 14 years. Generalized estimating equations were used to calculate incidence rate ratios (IRR) and odds ratios for the difference between cancer survivors and matched cancer-free individuals. RESULTS: Compared with cancer-free individuals, cancer survivors had six times higher sick-leave days per year after cancer (IRR 6.25 [95% CI, 5.97-6.54] for men; IRR, 5.51 [5.39-5.64] for women). This higher number of sick-leave days declined over time but a two-fold difference persisted. An approximate 1.5 times higher risk of receiving disability pension remained during follow-up. The unemployment days tended to be lower for cancer survivors (IRR, 0.84 [0.75-0.94] for men; IRR, 0.91 [0.86-0.96] for women). Risk of sick leave and disability pension was higher among those with leukemia, colorectal, and breast cancer than skin and genitourinary cancers. CONCLUSIONS: Cancer survivors who returned to work experienced a high and persisting sick leave and disability pension for over a decade. Prolonged receipt of a high amount of benefits may have long-term adverse impacts on financial circumstances; more knowledge to promote the environment that encourages returning to and remaining in work is needed.

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal register study aimed to investigate the association between gambling disorder (GD) and work disability and to map work disability in subgroups of individuals with GD, three years before and three years after diagnosis. METHODS: We included individuals aged 19-62 with GD between 2005 and 2018 (n = 2830; 71.1% men, mean age: 35.1) and a matched comparison cohort (n = 28 300). Work disability was operationalized as the aggregated net days of sickness absence and disability pension. Generalized estimating equation models were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of long-term work disability (>90 days of work disability/year). Secondly, we conducted Group-based Trajectory Models on days of work disability. RESULTS: Individuals with GD showed a four-year increased risk of long-term work disability compared to the matched cohort, peaking at the time of diagnosis (AOR = 1.89; CI 1.67-2.13). Four trajectory groups of work disability days were identified: constant low (60.3%, 5.6-11.2 days), low and increasing (11.4%, 11.8-152.5 days), medium-high and decreasing (11.1%, 65.1-110 days), and constant high (17.1%, 264-331 days). Individuals who were females, older, with prior psychiatric diagnosis, and had been dispensed a psychotropic medication, particularly antidepressants, were more likely to be assigned to groups other than the constant low. CONCLUSION: Individuals with GD have an increased risk of work disability which may add financial and social pressure and is an additional incentive for earlier detection and prevention of GD.

BACKGROUND: Sick leave due to mental disorders poses a relevant societal and economic burden. Research on sick leave over a patient journey of individuals who received one of two treatment approaches - either behavioral (BT) or psychodynamic (PDT) psychotherapy - is scarce. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study on anonymized German claims data for propensity-score matched patients who received short-term outpatient BT or PDT. We analyzed sick leave days and direct health care costs one year before, during, and one year after psychotherapy. RESULTS: We analyzed data of patients who received BT and PDT, with N = 14 530 patients per group after matching. Patients showed sick leave days per person year of 33.66 and 35.05 days before, 35.99 and 39.74 days during, and 20.03 and 20.95 days after BT and PDT, respectively. Sick leave rates were overall higher in patients who received PDT. Both patient groups showed reductions of roughly 14 sick leave days per year, or 40%, from before to after therapy without a difference between BT and PDT (difference-in-difference [DiD] = -0.48, 95%-confidence interval [CI] -1.61 to 0.68). Same applies to direct health care costs which reduced in both groups by roughly 1800 EUR (DiD = 0, 95%-CI -158 to 157). CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest similar reductions in sick leave days and direct health care costs from before to after BT and PDT. As sick leave is discussed to serve as an indicator of overall health and functioning in mental disorders, both treatments may have a similar positive impact on mental health.

AIMS: The study objective was to explore how upper extremity impairments (UEIs) affect the everyday life and work-life of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to compare them to a control group without T1D to determine if there are diabetes-specific consequences of UEIs. METHODS: In a controlled cross-sectional study, a survey was distributed across all regions of Denmark. A total of 2174 people with T1D and 827 controls were included in the study population. The survey addressed UEI symptoms, employment status, functional disability, mental well-being and diabetes distress. Data were analysed using multivariable logistic and linear regression. RESULTS: Upper extremity impairments were associated with a higher rate of work absence and modification, but no more so for people with T1D than for the control group. Among people with T1D, UEIs were significantly associated with worse mental well-being and diabetes distress, and across all outcomes including functional disability, additive effects were found with an increasing number of coexisting impairments. The impact of UEIs on functional disability was more severe for the T1D group than the control group, but this was primarily due to differences in the number of coexisting impairments. CONCLUSIONS: Upper extremity impairments have significant negative implications for the work-life and everyday life of people with T1D, and interventions to reduce UEIs and their impact among this group are highly relevant.

BACKGROUND: Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) have led to improved health and work productivity among people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). OBJECTIVES: To describe trajectories of recent DMT use and their association with sickness absence and/or disability pension (SADP) among PwMS in Sweden. METHODS: A longitudinal register-based study was conducted among 1395 PwMS with treatment start in 2014/2015. While DMT use over 5 years was assessed using sequence analysis resulting in four clusters, a 7-year (Y-2 toY4) trend of SADP was analyzed using zero-inflated negative binomial regression. RESULTS: Four clusters of DMT use trajectories were identified: long-term non-high-efficacy (483, 34.6%), long-term high-efficacy (572, 41%), escalation (221, 15.8%), and discontinuation (119, 8.5%). Progressive MS and higher expanded disability status scale scores were associated with the escalation, long-term high-efficacy, or discontinuation clusters. PwMS in the long-term high-efficacy and escalation clusters had higher likelihood of being on SADP. However, PwMS initiating high-efficacy DMTs demonstrated steeper decline in SADP than others. CONCLUSION: Using sequence analysis, this study showed recent DMT use trajectories among PwMS where initiation of high-efficacy DMTs has become more common. The trend of SADP was stable and lower in those using non-high-efficacy DMTs and larger improvements were shown in those initiating high-efficacy DMTs.

OBJECTIVE: Specific information for whom and when cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is associated with depression risk is lacking. We aimed to study the association between adulthood CRF and incident depression, long-term sickness absence, and disability pension due to depression, as well as examine moderation of sex, age, education, and occupation on associations. METHODS: A large prospective cohort study follows participants over time with Swedish occupational health screenings data. The study includes 330,247 individuals (aged 16-79 years, 46% women) without a depression diagnosis at baseline. CRF was estimated from a submaximal cycle test. RESULTS: CRF was associated beneficially from low to higher levels with incident depression and long-term sickness absence due to depression. Further, CRF at high levels (≥46 ml/min/kg) was associated with a decreased risk of receiving disability pension due to depression. The associations remained after adjustment for age and sex, but not lifestyle-related factors and co-morbidity. Participants with moderate and high CRF had 16% and 21%, respectively, lower risk for incident depression, and participants with high CRF had 11% lower risk for long-term sickness absence due to depression. Associations between higher CRF and the outcomes were mainly evident in men, younger participants, and individuals with low education. CONCLUSION: In a large sample of adults without a depression diagnosis at baseline, higher CRF was shown to be beneficially related to the risk of incident depression and, to some extent, long-term sickness absence due to depression. If causal, targeted interventions focusing on increasing CRF in these sub-groups should be prioritized.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to assess the prospective associations between work-related factors, including psychosocial and physical work factors and working time/hours factors, and sickness presenteeism alone or combined with sickness absence. METHODS: The study relied on prospective data of a national representative sample of 16 129 employees followed up from 2013 to 2016 in France. Work-related factors were assessed in 2013 and included 20 psychosocial work factors, 4 working time/hours factors and 4 physical work factors. Sickness presenteeism was studied using two items in 2016: the presence and duration of sickness presenteeism within the last 12 months. Weighted Hurdle and multinomial logistic regression models were performed to study the prospective associations between work-related factors at baseline and sickness presenteeism (both presence and duration) and sickness absence at follow-up. Models were adjusted for covariates. RESULTS: Almost all psychosocial and physical work factors were predictive of sickness presenteeism (ORs ranging from 1.30 to 2.07 for men, and from 1.16 to 2.30 for women) but only some of them predicted its duration. Dose-response associations were observed between multiple exposures to these factors and sickness presenteeism. These factors predicted more sickness presenteeism alone or combined with sickness absence than sickness absence alone. Gender differences were observed in these associations, as some associations were found to be stronger among women than among men. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to study sickness presenteeism and sickness absence combined. Prevention oriented towards the psychosocial and physical work environment may contribute to reduce sickness presenteeism and sickness absence.

BACKGROUND: Gynecologic cancers are one of the most common types of malignancies in working-age women. We aimed to determine the factors that impede women from returning to the same workplace after treatment for such cancers. METHODS: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted on 194 women who underwent treatment for gynecologic cancer at the Okayama University (≥1 year after cancer treatment and <65 years of age). We performed a logistic regression analysis to determine the relationship between returning to the same workplace and not taking sick leave. RESULTS: The median age at diagnosis was 49.0 years, and the median time from cancer treatment to questionnaire completion was 3.8 years. Not returning to the same workplace was positively associated with not being regularly employed (P = 0.018), short work time per day (P = 0.023), low personal income (P = 0.004), not taking sick leave (P < 0.001), advanced cancer stage (P = 0.018) and long treatment time (P = 0.032). Interestingly, not taking sick leave was strongly associated with not returning to the same workplace in the multivariable analysis (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Not taking sick leave likely was negatively associated with returning to the same workplace after the treatment for gynecologic cancer. Therefore, we suggest that steps be taken to formally introduce a sick leave system over and above the paid leave system in Japan.

Air pollution's short-term effects on a wide range of health outcomes have been studied extensively, primarily focused on vulnerable groups (e.g., children and the elderly). However, the air pollution effects on the adult working population through sick leave have received little attention. This study aims to 1) estimate the associations between particulate matter ≤2.5 µm3 (PM2.5) and sick leave episodes and 2) calculate the attributable number of sick leave days and the consequential productivity loss in the City of Stockholm, Sweden. Individual level daily sick leave data was obtained from Statistics Sweden for the years 2011-2019. Daily average concentrations of PM2.5 were obtained from the main urban background monitoring station in Stockholm. A case-crossover study design was applied to estimate the association between short-term PM2.5 and onset of sick leave episodes. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the relative increase in odds of onset per 10 µg/m3 of PM2.5, adjusting for temperature, season, and pollen. A human capital method was applied to estimate the PM2.5 attributable productivity loss. In total, 1.5 million (M) individual sick leave occurrences were studied. The measured daily mean PM2.5 concentration was 4.2 µg/m3 (IQR 3.7 µg/m3). The odds of a sick leave episode was estimated to increase by 8.5% (95% CI: 7.8-9.3) per 10 µg/m3 average exposure 2-4 days before. Sub-group analysis showed that private sector and individuals 15-24 years old had a lower increase in odds of sick leave episodes in relation to PM2.5 exposure. In Stockholm, 4% of the sick leave episodes were attributable to PM2.5 exposure, corresponding to €17 M per year in productivity loss. Our study suggests a positive association between PM2.5 and sick leave episodes in a low exposure area.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation coordinators have gradually been introduced into Swedish psychiatric care to support individuals on sick leave to return-to-work or enter work. AIM: To explore healthcare professionals' perspectives on the contributions a rehabilitation coordinator can make to patients in psychiatric care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was used, and data were collected through interviews. Twelve healthcare professionals in psychiatric care participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: An overarching theme evolved: "The rehabilitation coordinator promotes security and reduces stress in the vocational rehabilitation process", based on two themes: (1) "Adaptations and support based on the patient's needs" and (2) "Rehabilitation coordinator efforts as relevant for care". The themes, in turn, consist of six subthemes. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that healthcare professionals perceived employment as important for patients' health and well-being. Therefore, the rehabilitation coordination efforts were not only seen as beneficial for addressing patients' challenges and needs in managing the vocational rehabilitation process but also as an integral part of the patient's care.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety-, mood/affective-, or stress-related disorders affect up to one-third of individuals during their lives and often impact their ability to work. This study aimed to delineate trajectories of work disability (WD) among individuals diagnosed with anxiety-, mood/affective-, or stress-related disorder in primary healthcare and to examine associations between trajectory group membership and sociodemographic, clinical, and clinical-related factors. METHODS: The study population included working-age individuals, aged 22-62 years, living in Stockholm County, Sweden, who experienced a new episode of any anxiety-, mood/affective, or stress-related disorder in primary healthcare in 2017 (N = 11,304). Data were obtained from Swedish national and regional registers and were linked using pseudonymised unique personal identification numbers. The primary outcome was days with WD (sum of sickness absence and disability pension days) during the three years before and three years after a diagnosis of anxiety-, mood/affective-, or stress-related disorders in primary healthcare. A zero-inflated Poisson group-based trajectory model was used to identify groups of individuals with similar patterns of WD over the study period, with a multinomial logistic regression used to examine associations of sociodemographic, clinical, and clinical-related factors with trajectory group membership. RESULTS: Four distinct trajectory groups were found, high increasing (5.1%), with high levels, from 16 to 80 days of WD in six-monthly intervals during follow-up, peak (11.1%), with a peak in WD, up to 32 days of WD, around the time of the diagnosis, low increasing (12.8%), with an increase in days of WD from 4 to 22 during the study period, and constant low (71.1%), with almost no WD over the study period. In multinomial regression models, diagnostic category, psychotropic medication use, a diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder within secondary healthcare, age at diagnosis, and occupation were associated with WD trajectory groups. CONCLUSIONS: Around two-thirds of individuals treated for a new episode of any anxiety-, mood/affective-, or stress-related disorder in primary healthcare have an excellent prognosis regarding WD. Several sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were associated with group membership; these factors could identify individuals at risk of long-term welfare dependency and who might benefit from interventions to promote a return to work.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prospective association of pain coping strategies and symptoms of anxiety and depression with work absenteeism in people with upper limb musculoskeletal disorders. DATA SOURCES: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases was conducted from inception to September 23, 2022. STUDY SELECTION: Prospective observational studies of adults with upper limb musculoskeletal disorders were included. Included studies had to provide data on the association of pain coping strategies (catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, self-efficacy or fear avoidance) or symptoms of anxiety and depression with work absenteeism. DATA EXTRACTION: Study selection, data extraction, and assessment of methodological quality (Newcastle Ottawa Scale) were performed by 2 independent authors. Random-effects models were used for quantitative synthesis. DATA SYNTHESIS: Eighteen studies (n=12,393 participants) were included. Most studies (77.8%) reported at least 1 significant association between 1 or more exposure factors (pain coping strategies or symptoms of anxiety and depression) and work absenteeism. Meta-analyses showed a statistically significant correlation between the exposure factors of catastrophizing (r=0.28, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.15 to 0.40; P<.0001) and symptoms of anxiety and depression (r=0.23, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.34; P=.0003) with work absenteeism. The correlation between self-efficacy and work absenteeism was non-significant (r=0.24, 95% CI: -0.02 to 0.47; P=.0747). CONCLUSIONS: Rehabilitation teams should consider assessing catastrophizing and symptoms of anxiety and depression to identify patients at risk for work absenteeism. Addressing these variables may also be considered in return-to-work programs for individuals with upper limb disorders.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about associations between occupational prestige, that is, the symbolic evaluation and social positioning of occupations, and sickness absence (SA) or disability pension (DP). We explored whether occupational prestige was associated with future SA or DP among women and men. METHODS: A Swedish 4-year prospective cohort study of all those in paid work and aged 25-59 in 2010 (N = 2,605,227; 47% women), using linked microdata from three nationwide registers and Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale values, categorised as 'very low', 'low', 'medium', 'high', or 'very high'. Odds ratios (ORs), 95% confidence intervals (CIs), crude and adjusted for several sociodemographic factors, were calculated for three outcomes: at least one SA spell (>14 days), >90 SA days, or DP occurrence, during follow-up (2011-2013). RESULTS: The mean number of SA days in 2010 varied by occupational prestige group, for example, 'very high': 3.0, 'very low': 6.5. Compared to those in occupations with 'very high' prestige, all other groups had higher adjusted ORs for all three outcomes. Among men, those with 'very low' occupational prestige had the highest OR for at least one SA spell: OR 1.51 (95% CI 1.47-1.56); among women, the 'medium' group had the highest OR: 1.30 (1.27-1.32). The results were similar for SA >90 days. OR for DP among women with 'very low' occupational prestige was 2.01 (1.84-2.19), and 3.55 (3.15-4.01) for men. CONCLUSIONS: Working in lower occupational prestige occupations was generally associated with higher odds of future SA/DP than working in higher prestige occupations; these associations were stronger for men than for women.

AIM: Since a lack of financial security among vulnerable groups could further hamper health and well-being, this study scrutinises factors predicting rejected prolonged sickness cash benefit claims among people on compensated sick leave of more than 180 days with a rejection between days 181 and 365. METHODS: All 246,872 claims for employed people on sick leave recorded in the Swedish official statistics register between January 2018 and June 2021 were analysed. Claim outcome was evaluated using logistic regression with odds ratios recalculated to relative risks (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), mutually adjusted for sociodemographic, work and health-related factors. RESULTS: Overall, 46,611 (19%) of the claims were rejected, with slightly lower rates among women (RR=0.97; 95% CI 0.95-0.99). Musculoskeletal diseases had the highest rejection rates (RR=1.84; 95% CI 1.75-1.94) followed by injuries (RR=1.57; 95% CI 1.50-1.64) and symptoms (RR=1.51; 95% CI 1.46-1.56). Mental disorders also had above-average rates (RR=1.14; 95% CI 1.09-1.19), whereas the lowest rates were found among pregnancy-related diagnoses (RR=0.13; 95% CI 0.12-0.14) and neoplasms (RR=0.18; 95% CI 0.18-0.18). Higher rates were found among immigrants (RR=1.37; 95% CI 1.34-1.40), those with only primary education (RR=1.09; 95% CI 1.06-1.12) and among blue-collar workers. The regional variation was substantial (RR range 0.41-1.72). CONCLUSIONS: High rejection rates were found for complex diagnoses and diagnoses with presupposed work ability in physically lighter occupations and among groups with assumed precarious positions at the labour market. Systematic differences in rates were identified between geographic regions. More studies are warranted to conclude if the differences found could be justified by other factors.

AIMS: This study aimed to investigate body function and daily life activities 18 months after Covid-19 infection, depending on the initial severity of disease and according to sex. METHODS: All 11,955 individuals on sick leave due to Covid-19 during the first wave of the pandemic in Sweden were invited to answer a questionnaire regarding experiencing negative changes in body function and daily life activities approximately 18 months after the start of sick leave. The analysis of data included descriptive statistics, group comparisons and multivariable binary logistic regressions (two groups). RESULTS: Of 5464 responders (45.7%), 4676 (85.6%) reported experiencing at least one problem with body function, and the reported prevalence of problems with daily life activities was 46%. The most frequently reported problems were fatigue (66.3%), cognition, sleep and movement. In general, women and those initially hospitalised reported more problems. In the regression analyses, problems with body function could partly explain whether individuals experienced problems with daily life activities. However, only fatigue and movement significantly contributed throughout all groups (p<0.001). Furthermore, the odds ratios for fatigue were larger in regressions for women than for men. CONCLUSIONS: In this nationwide study, more than 8 out of 10 individuals experienced problems with body function 18 months after being on sick leave due to Covid-19, with women and those initially hospitalised reporting more problems. Problems with body function, such as fatigue, could partly explain problems with daily life activities. However, the mechanisms behind the consequences are not yet clear and need to be further investigated.

BACKGROUND: Vertigo and dizziness can be disabling symptoms that result in sick leave. Research regarding sickness absence due to dizziness has focused on specific vestibular diagnoses rather than the nonspecific vertigo/dizziness diagnoses. Strict sick leave regulations were introduced in Sweden in 2008. The aim of this study was to describe the vertigo/dizziness sick leave prevalence and duration considering both specific and nonspecific diagnoses according to International Classification of diseases 10th revision (ICD-10) on the 3-digit level, including the less specific "R" diagnoses. METHODS: Through Swedish nationwide registers we identified individuals aged 16-64 years who during the years 2005-2018 were sickness absent > 14 consecutive days - minimum register threshold - due to vertigo/dizziness diagnoses according to ICD10 codes: specific diagnoses (H81.0, H81.1, H81.2, H81.3, H81.4, G11x) and nonspecific (R42, R26, R27, H81.9). We described the demographic characteristics, prevalence and duration of such sick-leave spells. Data were stratified according to diagnostic groups: ataxias, vestibular and nonspecific. RESULTS: We identified 52,179 dizziness/vertigo sick leave episodes > 14 days in 45,353 unique individuals between 2005-2018, which constitutes 0.83% from all sick leave episodes in the given period.The nonspecific diagnoses represented 72% (n = 37741) of sick leave episodes and specific vestibular H-diagnoses 27% (n = 14083). The most common specific vestibular codes was Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) 9.4% (n = 4929). The median duration of sick leave was 31 days (IQR 21-61). Women on sick leave were younger than men (47 vs 51 years, p < 0.05) and had a higher proportion of nonspecific diagnoses compared with men (74% vs 70%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The vast majority of vertigo/dizziness sick leave episodes were coded as nonspecific diagnoses and occurred in women. BPPV, a curable vestibular condition, was the most common specific diagnosis. This suggests a potential for improved diagnostics. Women on sick leave due to dizziness/vertigo were younger and more often received nonspecific diagnostic codes. Future studies should determine the frequency of use of evidence based therapies and investigate further the gender differences.

BACKGROUND: The link between workplace bullying and poor mental health is well-known. However, little is known about the prospective and potentially reciprocal association between workplace bullying and mental health-related sickness absence. This 2-year prospective study examined bidirectional associations between exposure to workplace bullying and sickness absence due to common mental disorders (SA-CMD) while controlling for confounding factors from both work and private life. METHODS: The study was based on propensity score-matched samples (N = 3216 and N = 552) from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health, using surveys from years 2012, 2014 and 2016. Self-reported exposure to workplace bullying was linked to registry-based information regarding medically certified SA-CMD (≥ 14 consecutive days). The associations were examined by means of Cox proportional hazards regression and via conditional logistic regression analysis. Hazard ratios and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were estimated. RESULTS: Exposure to workplace bullying was associated with an increased risk of incident SA-CMD (HR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.0-1.8), after accounting for the influence of job demands, decision authority, previous SA-CMD, as well as other sociodemographic covariates. However, we found no statistically significant association between SA-CMD and subsequent workplace bullying (OR 1.2, 95% CI 0.7-1.9). CONCLUSIONS: The results support an association between self-reported workplace bullying and SA-CMD, independent of other sociodemographic factors and workplace stressors. Preventing workplace bullying could alleviate a share of the individual and societal burden caused by SA globally.

BACKGROUND: In addition to several sequelae of post-COVID-19, individuals also experience significant limitations in work ability, resulting in negative consequences for the return-to-work (RTW) process. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess the impact of post-COVID-19 on work ability and RTW of individuals previously infected with SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: Studies on the work ability and RTW of patients with post-COVID-19 (more than 12 weeks after an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection) were regarded eligible for inclusion. Systematic search of literature was performed up to March 2023 using five databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, CENTRAL and WHO COVID 19). Study selection followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) Statement. A meta-analysis estimated the overall success rate of RTW. The risk of bias of the included studies was evaluated with the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS). RESULTS: 19 relevant studies, published between 2021 and 2023, were included in the systematic review, involving 21.155 patients from 14 different countries. The findings indicate that a significant proportion of individuals with post-COVID-19 experience persistent symptoms and functional impairments, with fatigue being the most prominent symptom. These persistent symptoms can have a considerable (negative) impact on individuals' physical and psychological capacity to participate in work-related activities, leading to lower work ability and increased absenteeism. The RTW for post-COVID-19 patients is complex, with approximately 60.9% of patients successfully returning to work after 12 or more weeks following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among those who successfully returning to work, a considerable number need modifications in their work duties or hours to cope with residual impairments. Factors such as workplace accommodations, supportive policies, and occupational rehabilitation programs play a crucial role in facilitating successful RTW. CONCLUSIONS: The systematic review underscores the substantial impact of post-COVID-19 on work-related outcomes. The implications of this research highlight the need for healthcare providers, employers, and policymakers to collaborate in creating inclusive work environments and implementing tailored rehabilitation programs to support individuals recovering from post-COVID-19. Further research should focus on long-term follow-up studies with mixed methods to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the long-term consequences of post-COVID-19 on work ability and RTW outcomes. BACKGROUND: Public health and working life are closely related. Even though Norway is one of the world's most equality-oriented countries, working life is still divided by gender. Women have a lower rate of participation in working life than men, they work more part-time and they have a higher sickness absence. Research has mostly focused on structural and cultural reasons for gender differences, rather than on the fact that women and men have different biology and face different health challenges. The aim of this project was to explore experienced associations between women's health and female participation in working life. METHODS: Qualitative methods were chosen for investigating women's experiences. We carried out in-depth interviews with 11 female high school teachers and supplemented the material with a focus group with five managers from the same organisation. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. We used the six steps of reflexive thematic analysis for consistency in the analysis process. RESULTS: The teachers shared a variety of experienced health issues within the field of women's health and perceived barriers in the work environment. Four main themes were identified: (1) invisibility of women's health at work, (2) complexity and lack of recognition of women's health at work, (3) women's health in work environment and (4) women's health and role conflicts. There were few contradictions between the two informant groups. We found that health, work and total life intertwine and that complexity, lack of recognition and invisibility of women's health appear at different levels in a mutual influence: for the women themselves, in the organisation and in society. CONCLUSION: Lack of recognition and invisibility of women's health in the work environment is suggested to influence women's work participation. The complexity of female health is not captured by gender-neutral structures in the work environment meant to protect and promote employees' occupational health. Recognition of women's health in the work context can therefore contribute to a gender-equal, health-promoting and sustainable working life.

BACKGROUND: This study explores how the goals of collaboration in the return-to-work (RTW) process for people with common mental disorders are described by the stakeholders involved, and how they experience stakeholders' roles and responsibilities in relation to these goals. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 41 participants from three Swedish regions. Nine of the participants were workers, six employer representatives, four occupational health professionals, four social insurance officers, 18 RTW coordinators and five physicians. Thematic analysis was conducted. RESULTS: Three main themes and overarching goals when collaborating on RTW were identified. In the first theme, 'creating an informative environment', all stakeholders emphasised clear roles and responsibilities. The second theme, 'striving for consensus in an environment of negotiations', addressed negotiations about when and how to collaborate, on what and with whom, and reveal different views on stakeholders' goals, roles and responsibilities in collaboration. The third theme identified goals for 'creating a supportive environment' for both workers and other stakeholders. Coordinators are found to have an important role in achieving a supportive environment, and in neutralising power imbalances between workers and their employers and social insurance officers. CONCLUSIONS: Competing goals and priorities were identified as hindering successful collaboration, contributing to a spectrum of complex versus easy RTW collaboration. This study suggests some basic conditions for achieving a collaborative arena that is neutral in terms of power balance, where all stakeholders can share their views.
