In this work, a two-parameter inversion problem is analyzed, related to surface crack widths for measuring depths of normal surface notches, based on a laser-based ultrasonic measurement method in the time domain. In determining the depth measurement formulas, the main technique is the time delay between reflected and scattered waves. Scattered waves are generated by two reflections along the bottom and three mode transformations at the surface of the crack tips. Moreover, the scattering angle of the mode-conversion waves is 30°. These two key factors lead to corrected item "2wß" in the depth measurement formula. A laser-based ultrasonic experimental platform is built to generate and receive surface waves in a non-contact manner on aluminum and steel specimens with surface cracks. The depth measurement method proposed in this paper has been validated through theoretical, simulation, and experimental methods. Finally, in this paper, an effective approach for quantitatively measuring crack depths, based on laser ultrasound, using the time-domain properties of surface wave propagation is provided.

In the context of defect detection in high-speed railway train wheels, particularly in ultrasonic-testing B-scan images characterized by their small size and complexity, the need for a robust solution is paramount. The proposed algorithm, UT-YOLO, was meticulously designed to address the specific challenges presented by these images. UT-YOLO enhances its learning capacity, accuracy in detecting small targets, and overall processing speed by adopting optimized convolutional layers, a special layer design, and an attention mechanism. This algorithm exhibits superior performance on high-speed railway wheel UT datasets, indicating its potential. Crucially, UT-YOLO meets real-time processing requirements, positioning it as a practical solution for the dynamic and high-speed environment of railway inspections. In experimental evaluations, UT-YOLO exhibited good performance in best recall, mAP@0.5 and mAP@0.5:0.95 increased by 37%, 36%, and 43%, respectively; and its speed also met the needs of real-time performance. Moreover, an ultrasonic defect detection data set based on real wheels was created, and this research has been applied in actual scenarios and has helped to greatly improve manual detection efficiency.

The identification of slag inclusion defects in welds is of the utmost importance in guaranteeing the integrity, safety, and prolonged service life of welded structures. Most research focuses on different kinds of weld defects, but branch research on categories of slag inclusion material is limited and critical for safeguarding the quality of engineering and the well-being of personnel. To address this issue, we design a simulated method using ultrasonic testing to identify the inclusion of material categories in austenitic stainless steel. It is based on a simulated experiment in a water environment, and six categories of cubic specimens, including four metallic and two non-metallic materials, are selected to simulate the slag materials of the inclusion defects. Variational mode decomposition optimized by particle swarm optimization is employed for ultrasonic signals denoising. Moreover, the phase spectrum of the denoised signal is utilized to extract the phase characteristic of the echo signal from the water-slag specimen interface. The experimental results show that our method has the characteristics of appropriate decomposition and good denoising performance. Compared with famous signal denoising algorithms, the proposed method extracted the lowest number of intrinsic mode functions from the echo signal with the highest signal-to-noise ratio and lowest normalized cross-correlation among all of the comparative algorithms in signal denoising of weld slag inclusion defects. Finally, the phase spectrum can ascertain whether the slag inclusion is a thicker or thinner medium compared with the weld base material based on the half-wave loss existing or not in the echo signal phase.

In order to achieve the non-destructive testing and quality evaluation of stainless-steel resistance spot welding (RSW) joints, a portable ultrasonic spiral C-scan testing instrument was developed based on the principle of ultrasonic pulse reflection. A mathematical model for the quality evaluation of RSW joints was established, and the centroid of the ultrasonic C-scan image in the nugget zone of the RSW was determined based on the principle of static moment. The longest and shortest axes passing through the centroid in the image were extracted, and the ratio of the longest axis to the shortest axis (RLS) factor and the average of axis (AOA) factor were calculated, respectively, to evaluate the quality of the joint. To study the effectiveness of the detection results, tensile tests, and stereo analysis were conducted on the solder joints after sampling. The results indicate that this detection method can realize online detection and significantly improve the detection efficiency; the detection value of internal defect size is close to the true value with an error of 0.1 mm; the combination of RLS and AOA factors can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties of RSW joints. This technology can be used to solve the NDT, evaluate problems of RSW joints, and realize engineering applications.

As the pioneering review in the field of ultrasonic defect detection for oil and gas pipelines based on bibliometric methods, this study employs visual analysis to identify the most influential countries, academic institutions, and journals in this domain. Through cluster analysis, it determines the primary trends, research hotspots, and future directions in this critical field. Starting from the current global industrial ultrasonic in-line inspection (ILI) detection level, this paper provides a flowchart for selecting detection methods and a table for defect comparison, detailing the comparative performance limits of different detection devices. It offers a comprehensive perspective on the latest ultrasonic pipeline detection technology from laboratory experiments to industrial practice.

Originating in the early 20th century, ultrasonic testing has found increasingly extensive applications in medicine, industry, and materials science. Achieving both a high signal-to-noise ratio and high efficiency is crucial in ultrasonic testing. The former means an increase in imaging clarity as well as the detection depth, while the latter facilitates a faster refresh of the image. It is difficult to balance these two indicators with a conventional short pulse to excite the probe, so in general handling methods, these two factors have a trade-off. To solve the above problems, coded excitation (CE) can increase the pulse duration and offers great potential to improve the signal-to-noise ratio with equivalent or even higher efficiency. In this paper, we first review the fundamentals of CE, including signal modulation, signal transmission, signal reception, pulse compression, and optimization methods. Then, we introduce the application of CE in different areas of ultrasonic testing, with a focus on industrial bulk wave single-probe detection, industrial guided wave detection, industrial bulk wave phased array detection, and medical phased array imaging. Finally, we point out the advantages as well as a few future directions of CE.

This paper presents a novel approach for preload measurement of bolted connections, specifically tailored for offshore wind applications. The proposed method combines robotics, Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), nonlinear acoustoelasticity, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Acceptable defects, below a pre-defined size, are shown to have an impact on preload measurement, and therefore conducting simultaneous defect detection and preload measurement is discussed in this paper. The study demonstrates that even slight changes in the orientation of the ultrasonic transducer, the non-automated approach, can introduce a significant error of up to 140 MPa in bolt stress measurement and therefore a robotic approach is employed to achieve consistent and accurate measurements. Additionally, the study emphasises the significance of considering average preload for comparison with ultrasonic data, which is achieved through FEA simulations. The advantages of the proposed robotic PAUT method over single-element approaches are discussed, including the incorporation of nonlinearity, simultaneous defect detection and stress measurement, hardware and software adaptability, and notably, a substantial improvement in measurement accuracy. Based on the findings, the paper strongly recommends the adoption of the robotic PAUT approach for preload measurement, whilst acknowledging the required investment in hardware, software, and skilled personnel.

With the rapidly growing interest in using structural timber, a need exists to inspect and assess these structures using non-destructive testing (NDT). This review article summarizes NDT methods for wood inspection. After an overview of the most important NDT methods currently used, a detailed review of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Ultrasonic Testing (UST) is presented. These two techniques can be applied in situ and produce useful visual representations for quantitative assessments and damage detection. With its commercial availability and portability, GPR can help rapidly identify critical features such as moisture, voids, and metal connectors in wood structures. UST, which effectively detects deep cracks, delaminations, and variations in ultrasonic wave velocity related to moisture content, complements GPR's capabilities. The non-destructive nature of both techniques preserves the structural integrity of timber, enabling thorough assessments without compromising integrity and durability. Techniques such as the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) and Total Focusing Method (TFM) allow for reconstructing images that an inspector can readily interpret for quantitative assessment. The development of new sensors, instruments, and analysis techniques has continued to improve the application of GPR and UST on wood. However, due to the hon-homogeneous anisotropic properties of this complex material, challenges remain to quantify defects and characterize inclusions reliably and accurately. By integrating advanced imaging algorithms that consider the material's complex properties, combining measurements with simulations, and employing machine learning techniques, the implementation and application of GPR and UST imaging and damage detection for wood structures can be further advanced.

Tool frame calibration has been widely used in robot-assisted printing, welding, and grinding, but it is not suitable for ultrasonic testing because the robot is submerged in water. The purpose of this paper is to present a tool frame calibration method, which is suitable for improving the precision of ultrasonic testing. In uniform mediums, sound travels along a straight line like ray. A reflector is fixed in water to reflect ultrasound, which makes it possible to measure distances between incidence points on a reflector and tool center point (TCP) on an ultrasound transducer. In addition, the positions and poses of the end flange are recorded through a robot controller. Finally, an optimization method is applied to calculate the position and pose errors of the tool frame relative to the end flange according to such records. The presented method was implemented in an ultrasonic testing system. We selected 100 incidence points on the reflector to calculate the assembly errors of the transducer. The pulse amplitude rose obviously after calibration, which verifies that this is an effective method. Considering that ultrasonic transducers can be used as a measuring tool, this paper proposes a tool frame calibration method for ultrasonic testing robots without introducing other measuring devices, which draws the conclusion that tool frame can be calibrated through ultrasound.

With the rapid development of the aerospace industry, the quality inspection of complex curved components, such as aero-engine blades, is becoming increasingly strict. In contrast with other NDT methods, ultrasonic testing is easier to automate, while offering higher accuracy and efficiency in thickness measuring. To solve the challenge of the automated NDT inspection of aero-engine blades, in this study, an ultrasonic inspection system with a six degree of freedom (DOF) was proposed for industrial robots. Additionally, a defect detection model and a thickness detection method were proposed for the robotic ultrasonic inspection system, based on the thickness variation of the aero-engine blade. Through the quantitative analysis on engine blades with prefabricated defects and curved test blocks with stepped thicknesses, it can be concluded that our system is able to achieve high accuracy in defect detection and thickness measurement.

This work proposes a new global FD-RTM method to solve the problem of ultrasonic inspection of parts with complex geometric shapes. With this method, the frequency domain reverse time migration (FD-RTM) algorithm is used to adapt to the complex refraction of ultrasonic waves by the surface, while an interface solution algorithm based on tangent fitting is used to solve the interface position with high precision through the full matrix reception data. Based on high-precision interface information, a hybrid extrapolation algorithm and a situation-specific probe movement strategy are used to enable the probe to find the next sampling point according to the direction of the workpiece surface, allowing complex surface topography features to be identified without relying on the workpiece CAD drawing. This makes it possible to achieve the automated inspection of workpieces. To verify the proposed method's effectiveness, an aluminum alloy model with side-drilled holes (SDH) is used. The geometry of the model consists of multiple convex and concave surfaces. By comparing the local FD-RTM imaging with images synthesized using the entire scan path, it is shown that gFD-RTM improved the imaging performance. Compared with FD-RTM, the average signal-to-noise ratio of gFD-RTM was increased by 20%, and the array performance index (API) was reduced by 70%, indicating effective detection coverage.

This paper presents an automated Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) system for the in-service inspection of orbital welds on tubular components operating at temperatures as high as 200 °C. The combination of two different NDT methods and respective inspection systems is here proposed to cover the detection of all potential defective weld conditions. The proposed NDT system combines ultrasounds and Eddy current techniques with dedicated approaches for dealing with high temperature conditions. Phased array ultrasound was employed, searching for volumetric defects within the weld bead volume while Eddy currents were used to look for surface and sub-surface cracks. The results from the phased array ultrasound results showed the effectiveness of the cooling mechanisms and that temperature effects on sound attenuation can be easily compensated for up to 200 °C. The Eddy current results showed almost no influence when temperatures were raised up to 300 °C.

For high-performance thermoplastic materials, material behavior results from the degree of crystallization and the distribution of crystalline phases. Due to the less stiff amorphous and the stiffer and anisotropic crystalline phases, the microstructural properties are inhomogeneous. Thus, imaging of the microstructure is an important tool to characterize the process-induced morphology and the resulting properties. Using focusing ultrasonic transducers with high frequency (25 MHz nominal center frequency) enables the imaging of specimens with high lateral resolution, while wave propagation is related to the elastic modulus, density and damping of the medium. The present work shows experimental results of high-frequency ultrasonic spectroscopy (HF-US) applied to injection-molded polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) tensile specimens with different process-related morphologies. This work presents different analysis procedures, e.g., backwall echo, time of flight and Fourier-transformed time signals, facilitating the mapping of gradual mechanical properties and assigning them to different crystalline content and morphological zones.

The use of guided wave-based Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for monitoring Polyethylene (PE) pipes is mostly restricted to detecting defects in welded zones, despite its diversified success in monitoring metallic pipes. PE's viscoelastic behavior and semi-crystalline structure make it prone to crack formation under extreme loads and environmental factors, which is a leading cause of pipeline failure. This state-of-the-art study aims to demonstrate the potential of UT for detecting cracks in non-welded regions of natural gas PE pipes. Laboratory experiments were conducted using a UT system consisting of low-cost piezoceramic transducers assembled in a pitch-catch configuration. The amplitude of the transmitted wave was analyzed to study wave interaction with cracks of different geometries. The frequency of the inspecting signal was optimized through wave dispersion and attenuation analysis, guiding the selection of third- and fourth- order longitudinal modes for the study. The findings revealed that cracks with lengths equal to or greater than the wavelength of the interacting mode were more easily detectable, while smaller crack lengths required greater crack depths for detection. However, there were potential limitations in the proposed technique related to crack orientation. These insights were validated using a finite element-based numerical model, confirming the potential of UT for detecting cracks in PE pipes.

Thin multi-layered materials are widely used in key structures of many high technology industries. To ensure the quality and safety of structures, layer thickness measurement by non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques is essential. In this paper, a novel approach for the measurement of each layer's thickness in thin multi-layered material is proposed by using ring-shaped laser generated focused ultrasonic bulk waves. The proposed method uses a ring-shaped laser with a variable radius to generate shear waves with variable focus inside the structure. By analyzing the signal characteristics at the ring center when the laser radius varies from zero to maximum, the direct measurement of layer thickness can be realized, considering that only when the focal depth and the layer thickness satisfy the specific relationship, the reflected shear waves converge and form a peak at the ring center. This straightforward approach can increase the pulse-echo SNR and prevent the processing of aliasing signals, and therefore provides higher efficiency and accuracy for the layer thickness measurement. In order to investigate the feasibility of this method, finite element simulations were conducted to simulate the ring-shaped laser generated ultrasonic waves in multi-layered structure in detail. Following the principle of the proposed method, the layer thickness of a bi-layer and 3-layer structure were respectively measured using simulation data. The results confirm that the proposed method can accurately and efficiently measure the layer thickness of thin multi-layered material.

The inspection of nuclear power plants is an essential process that occurs during plant outages. During this process, various systems are inspected, including the reactor's fuel channels to ensure that they are safe and reliable for the plant's operation. The inspection of Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU®) reactor pressure tubes, which are the core component of the fuel channels and house the reactor fuel bundles, is performed using Ultrasonic Testing (UT). Based on the current process that is followed by Canadian nuclear operators, the UT scans are manually examined by analysts to locate, measure, and characterize pressure tube flaws. This paper proposes solutions for the auto-detection and sizing of pressure tube flaws using two deterministic algorithms, the first uses segmented linear regression, while the second uses the average time of flight (ToF) within ±σ of µ. When compared against a manual analysis stream, the linear regression algorithm and the average ToF achieved an average depth difference of 0.0180 mm and 0.0206 mm, respectively. These results are very close to the depth difference of 0.0156 mm when comparing two manual streams. Therefore, the proposed algorithms can be adopted in production, which can lead to significant cost savings in terms of time and labor.

The Large Aperture Ultrasound System (LAUS) developed at BAM is known for its ability to penetrate thick objects, especially concrete structures commonly used in nuclear waste storage and other applications in civil engineering. Although the current system effectively penetrates up to ~9 m, further optimization is imperative to enhance the safety and integrity of disposal structures for radioactive or toxic waste. This study focuses on enhancing the system's efficiency by optimizing the transducer spacing, ensuring that resolution is not compromised. An array of twelve horizontal shear wave transducers was used to find a balance between penetration depth and resolution. Systematic adjustments of the spacing between transmitter and receiver units were undertaken based on target depth ranges of known reflectors at depth ranges from 5 m to 10 m. The trade-offs between resolution and artifact generation were meticulously assessed. This comprehensive study employs a dual approach using both simulations and measurements to investigate the performance of transducer units spaced at 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm. We found that for depths up to 5 m, a spacing of 10 cm for LAUS transducer units provided the best resolution as confirmed by both simulations and measurements. This optimal distance is particularly effective in achieving clear reflections and a satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in imaging scenarios with materials such as thick concrete structures. However, when targeting depths greater than 10 m, we recommend increasing the distance between the transducers to 20 cm. This increased spacing improves the SNR in comparison to other spacings, as seen in the simulation of a 10 m deep backwall. Our results emphasize the critical role of transducer spacing in achieving the desired SNR and resolution, especially in the context of depth imaging requirements for LAUS applications. In addition to the transducer spacing, different distances between individual sets of measurement positions were tested. Overall, keeping the minimal possible distance between measurement position offsets provides the best imaging results at greater depths. The proposed optimizations for the LAUS in this study are primarily relevant to applications on massive nuclear structures for nuclear waste management. This research highlights the need for better LAUS efficiency in applications such as sealing structures, laying the foundation for future technological advances in this field.

Low-frequency ultrasonic testing is a well-established non-destructive testing (NDT) method in civil engineering for material characterization and the localization of cracks, reinforcing bars and delamination. A novel ultrasonic borehole probe is developed for in situ quality assurance of sealing structures in radioactive waste repositories using existing research boreholes. The aim is to examine the sealing structures made of salt concrete for any possible cracks and delamination and to localize built-in components. A prototype has been developed using 12 individual horizontal dry point contact (DPC) shear wave transducers separated by equidistant transmitter/receiver arrays. The probe is equipped with a commercially available portable ultrasonic flaw detector used in the NDT civil engineering industry. To increase the sound pressure generated, the number of transducers in the novel probe is increased to 32 transducers. In addition, the timed excitation of each transducer directs a focused beam of sound to a specific angle and distance based on the previously calculated delay time. This narrows the sensitivity of test volume and improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the received signals. In this paper, the newly designed phased array borehole probe is validated by beam computation in the CIVA software and experimental investigations on a half-cylindrical test specimen to investigate the directional characteristics. In combination with geophysical reconstruction methods, it is expected that an optimised radiation pattern of the probe will improve the signal quality and thus increase the reliability of the imaging results. This is an important consideration for the construction of safe sealing structures for the safe disposal of radioactive or toxic waste.

Non-destructive stress measurement by ultrasonic testing is based on calculating the acoustoelastic modulus obtained from the relationship between material stress and sound wave velocity. A critically refracted longitudinal (LCR) wave, which is a bulk longitudinal wave penetrating below and parallel to the surface below an effective depth, is most suitable for ultrasonic stress measurement tests because it exhibits a relatively large change in travel time in response to a change in stress. In particular, the residual stress distribution through the thickness of the subject can be calculated if transducers of different frequencies are applied because of the characteristic of propagation to different depths of penetration depending on the frequency. The main purpose of this study was to visualize the internal or residual stress distribution through the thickness of rails using LCR waves. To this end, LCR probes with different center frequencies were designed and manufactured, and the residual stress values ââof an unused railroad rail and two used railroad rails operated under different conditions were calculated. This was done using the ultrasonic signals received from each probe, of which the distributions were mapped. Through these mapping results, different residual stress values could be calculated according to the depth. The differences in residual stress generation and distribution according to the conditions surrounding the contact between train wheels and rails, and their characteristics, were visualized and analyzed. As a result, it could be concluded that the non-destructive evaluation technique using LCR waves could detect differences in the residual stress of a rail, and thus can be used to measure the residual stress of the rail accurately.

Ultrasonic transducers are often used in the nuclear industry as sensors to monitor the health and process status of systems or the components. Some of the after-effects of the Fukushima Daiichi earthquake could have been eased if sensors had been in place inside the four reactors and sensed the overheating causing meltdown and steam explosions. The key element of ultrasonic sensors is the piezoelectric wafer, which is usually derived from lead-zirconate-titanate (Pb(Zr, Ti)O3, PZT). This material loses its piezoelectrical properties at a temperature of about 200 °C. It also undergoes nuclear transmutation. Bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12, BiTi) has been considered as a potential candidate for replacing PZT at the middle of this temperature range, with many possible applications, since it has a Curie-Weiss temperature of about 650 °C. The aim of this article is to describe experimental details for operation in gamma and nuclear radiation concomitant with elevated temperatures and details of the performance of a BiTi sensor during and after irradiation testing. In these experiments, bismuth titanate has been demonstrated to operate up to a fast neutron fluence of 5 × 1020 n/cm2 and gamma radiation of 7.23 × 1021 (gamma/cm2). The results offer a perspective on the state-of the-art for a possible sensor for harsh environments of high temperature, Gamma radiation, and nuclear fluence.
