RESUMO

The reading the mind in the eyes test (RMET) - which assesses the theory of mind component of social cognition - is often used to compare social cognition between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. There is, however, no systematic review integrating the results of these studies. We identified 198 studies published before July 2020 that administered RMET to patients with schizophrenia or healthy controls from three English-language and two Chinese-language databases. These studies included 41 separate samples of patients with schizophrenia (total n = 1836) and 197 separate samples of healthy controls (total n = 23 675). The pooled RMET score was 19.76 (95% CI 18.91-20.60) in patients and 25.53 (95% CI 25.19-25.87) in controls (z = 12.41, p < 0.001). After excluding small-sample outlier studies, this difference in RMET performance was greater in studies using non-English v. English versions of RMET (Chi [Q] = 8.54, p < 0.001). Meta-regression analyses found a negative association of age with RMET score and a positive association of years of schooling with RMET score in both patients and controls. A secondary meta-analysis using a spline construction of 180 healthy control samples identified a non-monotonic relationship between age and RMET score - RMET scores increased with age before 31 and decreased with age after 31. These results indicate that patients with schizophrenia have substantial deficits in theory of mind compared with healthy controls, supporting the construct validity of RMET as a measure of social cognition. The different results for English versus non-English versions of RMET and the non-monotonic relationship between age and RMET score highlight the importance of the language of administration of RMET and the possibility that the relationship of aging with theory of mind is different from the relationship of aging with other types of cognitive functioning.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS)-linked stress is frequent, multidetermined and facilitates the onset/exacerbation of MS. However, few explanatory models of stress analysed the joint explanatory effect of emotion regulation and clinical outcomes of MS in those patients. OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether self-reported MS-related conditions (number of relapses, fatigue and global disability) and specific emotion regulation processes (experiential avoidance and self-compassion) explain stress symptoms in MS patients. METHODS: The MS sample comprised 101 patients with MS diagnosis receiving treatment in hospitals and recruited through the Portuguese MS Society. The no-MS sample included 134 age-, sex- and years of education-matched adults without MS recruited from the general Portuguese population. Both samples did not report other neurological disorders. Data were collected using self-response measures. RESULTS: All potential explanatory variables differed significantly between samples, with higher scores found in MS patients. In MS clinical sample, those variables and years of education correlated with stress symptoms and predicted stress symptoms in simple linear regression models. These results allowed their selection as covariates in a multiple linear regression model. Years of education, the number of relapses, fatigue and experiential avoidance significantly predicted 51% of stress symptoms' total variance. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides preliminary evidence on the importance of clinicians and researchers considering the simultaneous contribution of years of education, the number of perceived relapses, fatigue and experiential avoidance as factors that can increase vulnerability to stress in MS patients. Psychological intervention programmes that tackle these factors and associated stress symptomatology should be implemented.

Education is strongly correlated with health outcomes in older adulthood. Whether the impact of education expansion improves health remains unclear due to a lack of clarity over the causal relationship. Previous health research within the social sciences has tended to use specific activities of daily living or self-reported health status. This study uses a broader and objective health measure - allostatic load (AL) - to take into consideration the exposures that accumulate throughout the life course. This paper applies a Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach to identify causality in relation to education on health as measured by AL. Using the Health and Retirement Study 2008 (N=3935), we adopt a polygenic score built from genetic variants associated with years of education. To test whether our analyses violate the exclusion assumption, we further run MR Egger regressions to test for bias from pleiotropy. We also explore the potential pathways between education and AL, including smoking, drinking, marital length, health insurance, etc. Using this genetic instrument, we find a 0.3 unit (19% of a standard deviation) reduction in AL per year of schooling. The effect is mainly driven by BMI and Hba1c. Smoking and marital stability are two potential pathways that also causally influenced by education. If our main and sensitivity analyses are valid, the results find support that a higher level of education is causally related to better health in older adulthood.

The Boston Naming Test (BNT) is the most widely used naming test worldwide in research and clinical settings. This study aimed to develop a method for adapting the BNT to suit different linguistic and cultural characteristics using the example of Maltese in a bilingual context. In addition, it investigated the effects in Malta of age and level of education on naming performance. The words of the BNT were first translated into Maltese. The test was then piloted to establish target and alternative responses. Naming performance data were later collected from individuals of different ages and levels of education. Only 38 BNT items had at least 70% name agreement. Main effects of age and education were found. A Maltese adaptation was proposed using 38 items and lenient scoring. Similar procedures may be used in other bilingual populations. The study suggests that normative data should be stratified according to age and education.

ApoE4 as a risk factor for dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is still an issue. We sought to determine the involvement of ApoE4 according to different clinical parameters in our cohort of patients from Strasbourg, France. ApoE genotyping was performed on the AlphaLewyMA cohort. In this cohort, 197 patients were genotyped: 105 DLB patients, 37 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, 29 patients with AD/DLB comorbidity, and 26 control subjects (CS). The groups of patients were also classified according to the stage of evolution of the disease: prodromal or demented. We analyzed other parameters in relation to ApoE4 status, such as years of education (YOE) and Alzheimer CSF biomarkers. We observed a higher proportion of ApoE4 carriers in the AD (51.4%) and AD/DLB (72.4%) groups compared to the DLB (25.7%) and CS (11.5%) groups (p < 0.0001). We found a correlation between age at disease onset and YOE in the AD group (p = 0.039) but not in the DLB group (p = 0.056). Interestingly, in the DLB group, the subgroup of patients with high YOE (≥ 11) had significantly more patients with ApoE4 than the subgroup with low YOE (< 11). AD biomarkers did not seem to be impacted by the presence of ApoE4, except for Aß42: DLB ApoE4-positive demented patients showed a more marked Aß42 decrease. ApoE4 does not appear to be a risk factor for "pure" DLB patients. These results suggest a strong link between ApoE4 and amyloidopathy and consequently with AD. In modern society, the improvement of women's education level has become one of the important indicators of national development and social progress. Although there are many useful explorations on the relationship between education and subjective well-being, the research on women's years of education and subjective well-being is very limited. The article focuses on women's years of education to determine whether and how to affect subjective well-being. This study is based on the China general social survey in 2021. The ordered Logit model was used to analyze the impact of women's years of education on subjective well-being, and a binary coupling coordination model was constructed to test the above two variables. The results show that the longer the education years of women, the stronger the subjective well-being. The benchmark regression results show that women's years of education have positive and negative effects on subjective well-being through economic status, physical and mental health, ecological environment, social cognition and personal cognition. The analysis of coupling coordination degree shows that the coupling between the years of education and subjective well-being of women in coastal areas and economically developed areas is the strongest, and the subjective well-being is better realized by increasing the years of education. Based on the above research results, this paper provides some practical suggestions for improving women's subjective well-being, and provides some valuable references for women to effectively balance husband-wife relationship, family relationship and work relationship, improve women's years of education and better obtain happiness.

BACKGROUND: State-of-the-art stroke treatment significantly reduces lesion size and stroke severity, but it remains unclear whether these therapeutic advances have diminished the burden of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). AIMS: In a cohort of patients receiving modern state-of-the-art stroke care including endovascular therapy, we assessed the frequency of PSCI and the pattern of domain-specific cognitive deficits, identified risk factors for PSCI, and determined the impact of acute PSCI on stroke outcome. METHODS: In this prospective monocentric cohort study, we examined patients with first-ever anterior circulation ischemic stroke without pre-stroke cognitive decline, using a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment ⩽10 days after symptom onset. Normative data were stratified by demographic variables. We defined PSCI as at least moderate (<1.5 standard deviation) deficits in ⩾2 cognitive domains. Multivariable regression analysis was applied to define risk factors for PSCI. RESULTS: We analyzed 329 non-aphasic patients admitted from December 2020 to July 2023 (67.2 ± 14.4 years old, 41.3% female, 13.1 ± 2.7 years of education). Although most patients had mild stroke (median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) 24 h = 1.00 (0.00; 3.00); 87.5% with NIHSS ⩽ 5), 69.3% of them presented with PSCI 2.7 ± 2.0 days post-stroke. The most severely and often affected cognitive domains were verbal learning, episodic memory, executive functions, selective attention, and constructive abilities (39.1%-51.2% of patients), whereas spatial neglect was less frequent (18.5%). The risk of PSCI was reduced with more years of education (odds ratio (OR) = 0.47, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.23-0.99) and right hemisphere lesions (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.26-0.84), and increased with stroke severity (NIHSS 24 h, OR = 4.19, 95% CI = 2.72-6.45), presence of hyperlipidemia (OR = 1.93, 95% CI = 1.01-3.68), but was not influenced by age. After adjusting for stroke severity and depressive symptoms, acute PSCI was associated with poor functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale > 2, F = 13.695, p < 0.001) and worse global cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score, F = 20.069, p < 0.001) at 3 months post-stroke. CONCLUSION: Despite modern stroke therapy and many strokes having mild severity, PSCI in the acute stroke phase remains frequent and associated with worse outcome. The most prevalent were learning and memory deficits. Cognitive reserve operationalized as years of education independently protects post-stroke cognition.

Purpose: The study aims to clarify the negative psychological state and resilience impairments of schizophrenia (SCZ) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) while evaluating their potential as risk factors. Patients and Methods: We recruited 143 individuals and divided them into three groups. Participants were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD)-24, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA)-14, Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ), Stigma of Mental Illness scale and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Serum biochemical parameters were measured by automatic biochemistry analyzer. Results: The score of ATQ was highest in the MetS group (F = 14.5, p < 0.001), and the total score of CD-RISC, subscale tenacity score and subscale strength score of CD-RISC were lowest in the MetS group (F = 8.54, p < 0.001; F = 5.79, p = 0.004; F = 10.9, p < 0.001). A stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that a negative correlation was observed among the ATQ with employment status, high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), and CD-RISC (ß=-0.190, t=-2.297, p = 0.023; ß=-0.278, t=-3.437, p = 0.001; ß=-0.238, t=-2.904, p = 0.004). A positive correlation was observed among the ATQ with waist, TG, WBC, and stigma (ß=0.271, t = 3.340, p = 0.001; ß=0.283, t = 3.509, p = 0.001; ß=0.231, t = 2.815, p = 0.006; ß=0.251, t=-2.504, p = 0.014). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis showed that among all independent predictors of ATQ, the TG, waist, HDL-C, CD-RISC, and stigma presented excellent specificity at 0.918, 0.852, 0.759, 0.633, and 0.605, respectively. Conclusion: Results suggested that the non-MetS and MetS groups had grievous sense of stigma, particularly, high degree of ATQ and resilience impairment was shown by the MetS group. The TG, waist, HDL-C of metabolic parameters, CD-RISC, and stigma presented excellent specificity to predict ATQ, and the waist showed excellent specificity to predict low resilience level.

INTRODUCTION: The proxies used to compose cognitive reserve (CR) for patients of a first episode of psychosis (FEP) have varied in the literature. The development of FEP is linked to peripheral pathways of the central nervous system, yet despite this knowledge, no research has considered the introduction of biomarkers as proxies for CR. Meanwhile, schizophrenia has been linked to the metabolic system, indicating that alterations in the levels of biological parameters, in particular high-density lipoproteins (HDL), cause worse global functioning and cognitive impairment. For these reasons, the present study aimed to create a quantifiable and objective CR index that adjusts for the multifactorial nature of FEP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 668 FEP patients and 217 healthy controls. Participants were assessed for sociodemographic information, years of education, employment status, premorbid IQ and biological parameters: waist circumference, hypertension, and levels of HDL, triglycerides, and glucose. RESULTS: The findings suggest that the years of education proxy showed correlational and higher relationship with HDL levels for both FEP patients (r=0.23, b=0.185) and controls (r=0.31, b=0.342). We found that the CR index composed of years of education and HDL levels showed a higher explanatory power for the phenomenon than the classic CR index composed of years of education, employment status and premorbid IQ. CONCLUSIONS: This article proposes an objective and quantifiable method to measure CR that is more the multifactorial nature of FEP.

Respiratory infectious diseases (RID) are the major form of infectious diseases in China, and are highly susceptible to climatic conditions. Current research mainly focuses on the impact of weather on RID, but there is a lack of research on the effect of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on RID. Therefore, this paper uses the system generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) and the data of 31 provinces in China from 2007 to 2018 to construct a dynamic panel model to empirically test the causality between ENSO and RID morbidity. Moreover, this paper considers the moderating effects of per capita disposable income and average years of education on this causality. The results show that ENSO can positively and significantly impact RID morbidity, which is 5.842% higher during El Niño years than normal years. In addition, per capita disposable income and average years of education can effectively weaken the relationship between ENSO and RID morbidity. Thus, this paper is of great significance for improving the RID early climate warning system in China and effectively controlling the spread of RID.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have high variability in brain tissue loss, making it difficult to use a disease-specific standard brain template. The objective of this study was to develop an AD-specific three-dimensional (3D) T1 brain tissue template and to evaluate the characteristics of the populations used to form the template. METHODS: We obtained 3D T1-weighted images from 294 individuals, including 101 AD, 96 amnestic MCI, and 97 cognitively normal (CN) elderly individuals, and segmented them into different brain tissues to generate AD-specific brain tissue templates. Demographic data and clinical outcome scores were compared between the three groups. Voxel-based analyses and regions-of-interest-based analyses were performed to compare gray matter volume (GMV) and white matter volume (WMV) between the three participant groups and to evaluate the relationship of GMV and WMV loss with age, years of education, and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. RESULTS: We created high-resolution AD-specific tissue probability maps (TPMs). In the AD and MCI groups, losses of both GMV and WMV were found with respect to the CN group in the hippocampus (F >44.60, P<0.001). GMV was lower with increasing age in all individuals in the left (r=-0.621, P<0.001) and right (r=-0.632, P<0.001) hippocampi. In the left hippocampus, GMV was positively correlated with years of education in the CN groups (r=0.345, P<0.001) but not in the MCI (r=0.223, P=0.0293) or AD (r=-0.021, P=0.835) groups. WMV of the corpus callosum was not significantly correlated with years of education in any of the three subject groups (r=0.035 and P=0.549 for left, r=0.013 and P=0.821 for right). In all individuals, GMV of the hippocampus was significantly correlated with MMSE scores (left, r=0.710 and P<0.001; right, r=0.680 and P<0.001), while WMV of the corpus callosum showed a weak correlation (left, r=0.142 and P=0.015; right, r=0.123 and P=0.035). CONCLUSIONS: A 3D, T1 brain tissue template was created using imaging data from CN, MCI, and AD participants considering the participants' age, sex, and years of education. Our disease-specific template can help evaluate brains to promote early diagnosis of MCI individuals and aid treatment of MCI and AD individuals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Clues show that a large number of toxic agents, including carcinogenic, heavy metals, other particles, and high levels of nicotine, are effectively delivered through cigarette and hookah smoking. A pilot study was carried out in Varamin city, Iran in 2016 aimed to determine status of cigarette and hookah smoking in adolescent students using, Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) questionnaire. METHODS: It was a cross-sectional study. At the first, of 63 Varamin city schools' using cluster sampling, 48 schools were considered as primary clusters and 4 schools were selected randomly as sample clusters and students with 7, 8 and 9 years of education were studied. The total number of registered students was 1,108 and 1,075 responded to the study questionnaire. The main tool for collecting information used in this study was the GYTS questionnaire developed by the World Health Organization, was completed by subjects. RESULTS: Totally, 479 (44.6%) students were boys and 596 (55.4%) were girls. Of 1,075 subjects the number of students at 7, 8 and 9 years education was 369 (34.3%), 362 (33.7%) and 344 (32.0%) respectively. The cigarette and hookah smoking using experience among the population was 9.2% and 25.5 respectively. Regarding the averages of the total score, although students have a relatively good attitude and specially behavioral intention (72% and 88% of the total score respectively), but only 47% of the total knowledge score by boys and 51% by girls, shows the average level of students' awareness related the undesirable effects of smoking. CONCLUSIONS: Considering that one out of four students experienced cigarette and hookah smoking. Nearly half of the students are exposed to cigarette smoke at home or outdoors. The state of cigarette and hookah smoking in the country is alarming among school students.

As people age, cognitive abilities may decline resulting in serious disabilities. Neuropsychological instruments can provide information on the cognitive state of older adults. Researchers worldwide have been using digital cognitive tests to assess cognitive domains. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether educational status affects the performance of older adults on digital cognitive tasks. METHODS: A systematic review of articles in English, Portuguese, or Spanish published in the last 5 years was conducted. The databases searched were SCOPUS, PubMed, Lilacs, Scielo and PsychInfo. The PRISMA method was used. RESULTS: A total of 7,089 articles were initially retrieved. After search and exclusion with justification, seven articles were selected for further review. CONCLUSION: The findings revealed that researchers using digital tasks generally employed paper-based tests to compare results. Also, no association between years of education and test performance was found. Finally, a dearth of studies using digital tests published by Brazilian researchers was evident.


A medida que as pessoas envelhecem, suas habilidades cognitivas podem diminuir, resultando em sérios problemas. Instrumentos neuropsicológicos podem fornecer informações sobre o estado cognitivo dos idosos. Pesquisadores de todo o mundo têm usado testes cognitivos digitais para avaliação da cognição. OBJETIVO: Identificar se a escolaridade interfere no desempenho de idosos em tarefas cognitivas digitais. MÉTODOS: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática dos últimos cinco anos. Foram escolhidos os idiomas português, inglês e espanhol. As buscas foram realizadas nas bases de dados SCOPUS, PubMed, LILACS, SciELO e PsycINFO. Foi utilizado o método PRISMA. RESULTADOS: Foram encontrados 7.089 artigos, inicialmente. Após as buscas e exclusões de artigos com justificativa, foram selecionados sete artigos para descrição. CONCLUSÃO: Foi possível perceber que, ao utilizar um teste digital, o (a) pesquisador (a) também utiliza testes de papel convencionais para comparação dos resultados. Além disso, não encontrou-se associações entre os testes cognitivos digitais e a escolaridade dos participantes. Por fim, foi possível observar que pesquisadores brasileiros não tem publicado, com frequência, estudos com testes digitais como método de estudo nas bases de dados e período indicados nesta revisão.

Conclusion: The findings revealed that researchers using digital tasks generally employed paper-based tests to compare results. Also, no association between years of education and test performance was found. Finally, a dearth of studies using digital tests published by Brazilian researchers was evident.


RESUMO A medida que as pessoas envelhecem, suas habilidades cognitivas podem diminuir, resultando em sérios problemas. Instrumentos neuropsicológicos podem fornecer informações sobre o estado cognitivo dos idosos. Pesquisadores de todo o mundo têm usado testes cognitivos digitais para avaliação da cognição. Objetivo: Identificar se a escolaridade interfere no desempenho de idosos em tarefas cognitivas digitais. Métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática dos últimos cinco anos. Foram escolhidos os idiomas português, inglês e espanhol. As buscas foram realizadas nas bases de dados SCOPUS, PubMed, LILACS, SciELO e PsycINFO. Foi utilizado o método PRISMA. Resultados: Foram encontrados 7.089 artigos, inicialmente. Após as buscas e exclusões de artigos com justificativa, foram selecionados sete artigos para descrição. Conclusão: Foi possível perceber que, ao utilizar um teste digital, o (a) pesquisador (a) também utiliza testes de papel convencionais para comparação dos resultados. Além disso, não encontrou-se associações entre os testes cognitivos digitais e a escolaridade dos participantes. Por fim, foi possível observar que pesquisadores brasileiros não tem publicado, com frequência, estudos com testes digitais como método de estudo nas bases de dados e período indicados nesta revisão.
