RESUMO

Enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) is a promising technique for soil reinforcement. To select a suitable calcium source and a suitable solution amount for aeolian sand stabilization using EICP, specimens treated with different solution amounts (1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, and 3.5 L/m2). Surface strength, crust thickness, calcium carbonate content (CCC) and water vapor adsorption tests were performed to evaluate the effect of two calcium sources (calcium acetate and calcium chloride) on aeolian sand solidification. The plant suitability of solidified sand was investigated by the sea buckthorn growth test. The suitable calcium source was then used for the laboratory wind tunnel test and the field test to examine the erosion resistance of solidified sand. The results demonstrated that Ca(CH3COO)2-treated specimens exhibited higher strength than CaCl2-treated specimens at the same EICP solution amount, and the water vapor equilibrium adsorption mass of Ca(CH3COO)2-treated specimens was less, indicating that Ca(CH3COO)2-solidified sand was more effective and had better long-term stability. In addition, plants grown in Ca(CH3COO)2-treated sand had greater seedling emergence percentage and higher average height, which indicated that calcium acetate is a more suitable calcium source for EICP treatment. Furthermore, the surface strength and crust thickness of solidified sand increased with increasing the solution amount. For sand treated with 3 L/m2 of solution, the excessive strength and thickness of the crust made plants growth difficult, and the performance of sand treated with more than 2 L/m2 of solution significantly improved. Thus, the solution amount of 2-3 L/m2 is suggested for engineering applications. The sand solidified using EICP in the field could effectively mitigate wind erosion and facilitate the growth of native plants. Therefore, EICP can be combined with vegetative method to achieve long-term wind erosion control in the future.

The form of oral calcium (Ca) supplement and the Ca source influence Ca absorption dynamics resulting in different postpartum calcemia. The objective of this study was to investigate whether an oral Ca supplement (mainly CaCO3) offered for voluntary consumption would maintain or increase postpartum blood Ca to the same degree as a Ca bolus (mainly CaCl2) providing an equivalent dose of a Ca. A total of 72 Holstein cows were blocked by expected parturition date and parity. Within each block of 3 animals, cows were randomly assigned to one of three treatments, including an oral Ca supplement offered for voluntary consumption (Ca-drink, n = 23), an oral Ca bolus (Ca-bolus, n = 24), or an untreated group (CON, n = 25). Treatments were administered once within 15 min postpartum. The Ca-drink provided 45 g of Ca (CaCO3 source) and was mixed in 20 L of lukewarm water and offered to cows for 30 min. The Ca-bolus provided 43 g of Ca (71% from CaCl2 and 29% from CaSO4) and was administered once. Both Ca-bolus and CON cows received 20-l of lukewarm water at parturition to standardize the volume of fluids (Ca-drink or 20-l lukewarm water) offered at parturition. Dairy cows offered Ca-drink had a 28% higher fluid consumption than Ca-bolus and CON cows. Milk yield and milk composition expressed in percentage protein, fat, lactose, and urea did not differ, whilst there was a small but significant increase in DMI in cows receiving the Ca-drink compared to CON, while Ca-bolus did not differ from other groups. This was consistent with reduced BW losses between week 1 and 3 in cows receiving the Ca-drink suspension. Treatment by time interactions were present for blood Ca, glucose, and urea concentrations. Blood Ca was relatively stable in Ca-drink cows, while higher fluctuations were observed in Ca-bolus cows. In Ca-bolus cows, blood Ca increased from 15 min to 6 h, decreased from 6 to 24 h, and finally increased again from 24 to 48 h. At 24 h post administration, blood Ca was greater in cows receiving the Ca-drink than cows receiving the Ca-bolus. Blood glucose was greater in Ca-bolus cows at 15 min after treatment administration compared with Ca-bolus and CON, while blood urea was higher in CON than Ca-drink and Ca-bolus throughout the sampling period. These results indicate that voluntary oral Ca resulted in a relatively stable calcemia, whereas higher fluctuations were observed in cows receiving the Ca-bolus. Due to a lack of differences between Ca-drink and Ca-bolus compared with CON, it is not possible to conclude regarding the efficacy in maintaining postpartum blood Ca.

Highly efficient red-emitting phosphors, CaAlSiN3 :Eu2+ , were successfully prepared by the solid-state method using calcium cyanide (CaCN2 ) as the single calcium source. The influences of crystallization temperature, crystallization time, calcination mode and compounds ratio on the photoluminescent properties were investigated. The CaAlSiN3 :Eu2+ phosphors were obtained with 1 mol% CaCN2 by a two-step calcination procedure at 900°C for 2 h and subsequently at 1600°C for 8 h. The CaAlSiN3 :Eu2+ phosphors showed the strongest luminescent intensity at 660 nm when excited by 468 nm. With an increase in crystallization time, the maximum wavelength of the emission was shifted from 644 nm to 660 nm.

The influence of calcium source (limestone and oyster shell) and particle size (<0.1 mm; 0.85 to 2 mm) on laying performance, egg quality, and bone properties were examined in laying ducks by a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Longyan females (288) with similar BW at 24 wk of age were randomly allotted into 4 treatments, each with 6 replicates of 12 individually caged birds and studied over the following 12 wk. Particle size affected egg weight and feed conversion (P < 0.05). Large particle size increased shell breaking strength, albumen height, Haugh unit, and shell content of phosphorus and magnesium (P < 0.05), but had no effect on egg shape, yolk color, shell thickness, or the weight proportion of shell. There were no effects of particle size on tibial properties: dry defatted weight, calcium content, or breaking strength. Limestone increased albumen height, shell content of calcium and phosphorus, and the breaking strength of tibia (P < 0.05). It is concluded that limestone with a large particle size provided for superior productive performance, egg quality, and bone characteristics and is more suitable than oyster shell for practical applications.

The choice of the calcium (Ca) source in pig diets and the addition of formic acid may affect the gastrointestinal inositol phosphate (InsP) degradation and thereby, phosphorus (P) digestibility in pigs. This study assessed the effects of different Ca sources (Ca carbonate, Ca formate), exogenous phytase, and chemical acidification on InsP degradation, nutrient digestion and retention, blood metabolites, and microbiota composition in growing pigs. In a randomized design, 8 ileal-cannulated barrows (24 kg initial BW) were fed 5 diets containing Ca formate or Ca carbonate as the only mineral Ca addition, with or without 1,500 FTU/kg of an exogenous hybrid 6-phytase. A fifth diet was composed of Ca carbonate with phytase but with 8 g formic acid/kg diet. No mineral P was added to the diets. Prececal InsP6 disappearance and P digestibility were lower (P ≤ 0.032) in pigs fed diets containing Ca formate. In the presence of exogenous phytase, InsP5 and InsP4 concentrations in the ileal digesta were lower (P ≤ 0.019) with Ca carbonate than Ca formate. The addition of formic acid to Ca carbonate with phytase diet resulted in greater (P = 0.027) prececal InsP6 disappearance (87% vs. 80%), lower (P = 0.001) InsP5 concentration, and greater (P ≤ 0.031) InsP2 and myo-inositol concentrations in the ileal digesta. Prececal P digestibility was greater (P = 0.004) with the addition of formic acid compared to Ca carbonate with phytase alone. Prececal amino acid (AA) digestibility of some AA was greater with Ca formate compared to Ca carbonate but only in diets with phytase (P ≤ 0.048). The addition of formic acid to the diet with Ca carbonate and phytase increased (P ≤ 0.006) the prececal AA digestibility of most indispensable AA. Exogenous phytase affected more microbial genera in the feces when Ca formate was used compared to Ca carbonate. In the ileal digesta, the Ca carbonate diet supplemented with formic acid and phytase led to a similar microbial community as the Ca formate diets. In conclusion, Ca formate reduced prececal InsP6 degradation and P digestibility, but might be of advantage in regard to prececal AA digestibility in pigs compared to Ca carbonate when exogenous phytase is added. The addition of formic acid to Ca carbonate with phytase, however, resulted in greater InsP6 disappearance, P and AA digestibility values, and changed ileal microbiota composition compared to Ca carbonate with phytase alone.


The study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary calcium sources, exogenous phytase, and formic acid on inositol phosphate (InsP) degradation and nutrient digestibility in ileal-cannulated growing pigs. It also evaluated the concentrations of phosphorus, calcium, and myo-inositol in the blood, the composition of the microbiota in the ileal digesta and feces, and the concentrations of volatile fatty acids in the feces. Replacing calcium carbonate with calcium formate in the feed reduced prececal InsP6 disappearance and phosphorus digestibility. However, adding formic acid to a diet containing calcium carbonate and phytase enhanced prececal InsP6 disappearance and phosphorus digestibility, and increased InsP2 and myo-inositol concentrations in the ileal digesta. The dietary treatments resulted in more pronounced alterations of the microbiota in the feces than the ileal digesta. In ileal digesta, the shifts in relative abundance were primarily evident among low-abundant genera, while in feces, changes were observed in a larger number among genera with higher levels of abundance. The findings of this study suggest that calcium formate is not a suitable alternative to calcium carbonate for phosphorus digestibility in growing pigs. The release of phosphorus from InsP by exogenous phytase can be increased by adding formic acid.

This work aimed to synthesize and characterize the calcium acetate monohydrate (Ca(CH3COO)2·H2O) from the exothermic reaction between CaCO3 powder derived from cockle shells with three different acetic acids (8, 10, and 12 mol L-1) concentrations by the rapid and easy process without pH and temperature control to lead to cheap chemical production. The physicochemical characteristics of all synthesized Ca(CH3COO)2·H2O samples are investigated based on the chemical compositions, crystal structures, vibrational characteristics, morphologies, and thermal behavior to confirm the target compound. A suitable concentration of 10 mol L-1 CH3COOH was chosen to produce Ca(CH3COO)2·H2O with the highest yield (96.30 %), maximum calcium content (96.2 % CaO) with lower impurities, and time consumption of 17 h. The calcium acetate product obtained from cockle shells in this work shows differences in thermal stability, morphological structure purity, %yield, and metal contamination with those reported obtained from other sources and another shell type in the previous work. This research investigates the transformation of cockle shell waste into CaCO3 for the production of calcium acetate, aiming to address environmental sustainability concerns by reducing the use of calcium ore resources and greenhouse gas emissions.

The growth performance of red claw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, fed diets with different sources and concentrations of natural calcium was evaluated. Formulated diets containing 30% protein and 8% lipid were prepared using supplementation of 0 (control), 3%, 6%, 9% eggshell, and 6% seashell. C. quadricarinatus juveniles with an average total weight of 0.21 ± 0.01 g and length of 25.0 ± 0.10 mm were obtained from ten ovigerous females bred in captivity. An aquarium with a size of 0.72 m² was divided into eight compartments with an area of 0.09 m² per compartment and was individually stocked with juvenile crayfish. A total of eight juvenile crayfish were used per dietary treatment. There were five dietary treatments in total and each of these treatments were replicated three times. The addition of eggshell and seashell powder exerted positive effects on the growth performance, molting frequency, and survival of the crayfish. Crayfish fed with a 6% eggshell-supplemented diet exhibited the best overall growth performance. The calcium percentage of the carapace increased with the increase in calcium content of the diets. Meanwhile, the performance of diets comprising eggshells and seashells was not significantly different (P > 0.05). Considering the low cost and abundance of eggshells, the addition of 6% of this product to the diet is recommended for the best growth of juvenile C. quadricarinatus.

Biocementation via enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) is an emerging ground improvement technique that utilizes urease for calcium carbonate precipitation. Usage of expensive laboratory grade chemicals in EICP hinders its implementation at field level applications. In this study, the feasibility of utilizing solid wastes generated from leather industry was investigated for EICP process. Initially, the proteinaceous fleshing waste was used as nitrogen source for production of an extracellular urease from Arthrobacter creatinolyticus MTCC 5604 followed by its subsequent use in EICP with suspended solids of tannery lime liquor, as alternative calcium source. The calcium ion solution was prepared by treating suspended solids of lime liquor with 1 N HCl. The EICP was optimum with 1000 U of urease, 1.0 M urea and 1.0 M CaCl2.2H2O for test tube experiments. Sand solidification experiments under optimal conditions with five times addition of cementation solution yielded a maximum unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 810 kPa with laboratory grade CaCl2.2H2O and 780 kPa with calcium from lime liquor. The crystalline phases and morphology of the CaCO3 precipitate were analyzed by XRD, FTIR and SEM-EDX. The results showed the formation of more stable calcite in EICP with calcium obtained from lime liquor, while calcite and vaterite polymorphs were obtained with CaCl2.2H2O. Utilization of fleshing waste and lime liquor in EICP could reduce the pollution load and sludge formation that are generated during the pre-tanning operations of leather manufacturing. The results indicated the viability of process to achieve cost effective and sustainable biocementation for large scale applications.

Heavy metal contamination during the rapid urbanization process in recent decades has notably impacted our fragile environments and threatens human health. However, traditional remediation approaches are considered time-consuming and costly, and the effect sometimes does not meet the requirements expected. The present study conducted test tube experiments to reproduce enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation applied to lead remediation under the effects of urease concentration and a calcium source. Furthermore, the speciation and sequence of the carbonate precipitation were simulated using the Visual MINTEQ software package. The results indicated that higher urease concentrations can assure the availability of CO3 2- during the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) process toward benefiting carbonate precipitation. The calcium source determines the speciation of carbonate precipitation and subsequently the Pb remediation efficiency. The use of CaO results in the dissolution of Pb(OH)2 and, therefore, discharges Pb ions, causing some difficulty in forming the multi-layer structure of carbonate precipitation and degrading Pb remediation. The findings of this study are useful in widening the horizon of applications of the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation technology to heavy metal remediation.

Heavy metal contamination has caused serious threats to surrounding fragile environments and human health. While the novel microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology in the recent years has been proven effective in improving material mechanical and durability properties, the mechanisms remedying heavy metal contamination still remain unclear. In this study, the potential of applying the MICP technology to the lead remediation under the effects of urease activity and calcium source was explored. The values of OD600 corresponding to the ureolytic bacterial activity, electrical conductivity (EC), urease activity (UA) and pH were applied to monitor the degree of urea hydrolysis. Further, the carbonate precipitations that possess different speciations and cannot be distinguished through test tube experiments were reproduced using the Visual MINTEQ software package towards verifying the validity of the proposed simulations, and revealing the mechanisms affecting the lead remediation efficiency. The findings summarised in this work give deep insights into lead-contaminated site remediation engineering.

Bio-concrete using bacterially produced calcium carbonate can repair microcracks but is still relatively expensive due to the addition of bacteria, nutrients, and calcium sources. Agricultural by-products and oyster shells were used to produce economical bio-concrete. Sesame meal was the optimal agricultural by-product for low-cost spore production of the alkaliphilic Bacillus miscanthi strain AK13. Transcriptomic dataset was utilized to compare the gene expressions of AK13 strain under neutral and alkaline conditions, which suggested that NaCl and riboflavin could be chosen as growth-promoting factors at alkaline pH. The optimal levels of sesame meal, NaCl, and riboflavin were induced with the central composite design to create an economical medium, in which AK13 strain formed more spores with less price than in commercial sporulation medium. Calcium nitrate obtained from nitric acid treatment of oyster shell powder increased the initial compressive strength of cement mortar. Non-ureolytic calcium carbonate precipitation by AK13 using oyster shell-derived calcium ions was verified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Stereomicroscope and field emission scanning electron microscopy confirmed that oyster shell-derived calcium ions, along with soybean meal-solution, increased the bacterial survival and calcium carbonate precipitation inside mortar cracks. These data suggest the possibility of commercializing bacterial self-healing concrete with economical substitutes for culture medium, growth nutrient, and calcium sources.

Mechanical loading on articular cartilage can induce many physical and chemical stimuli on chondrocytes residing in the extracellular matrix (ECM). Intracellular calcium ([Ca2+ ]i ) signaling is among the earliest responses of chondrocytes to physical stimuli, but the [Ca2+ ]i signaling of in situ chondrocytes in loaded cartilage is not fully understood due to the technical challenges in [Ca2+ ]i imaging of chondrocytes in a deforming ECM. This study developed a novel bi-directional microscopy loading device that enables the record of transient [Ca2+ ]i responses of in situ chondrocytes in loaded cartilage. It was found that compressive loading significantly promoted [Ca2+ ]i signaling in chondrocytes with faster [Ca2+ ]i oscillations in comparison to the non-loaded cartilage. Seven [Ca2+ ]i signaling pathways were further investigated by treating the cartilage with antagonists prior to and/or during the loading. Removal of extracellular Ca2+ ions completely abolished the [Ca2+ ]i responses of in situ chondrocytes, suggesting the indispensable role of extracellular Ca2+ sources in initiating the [Ca2+ ]i signaling in chondrocytes. Depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores, inhibition of PLC-IP3 pathway, and block of purinergic receptors on plasma membrane led to significant reduction in the responsive rate of cells. Three types of ion channels that are regulated by different physical signals, TRPV4 (osmotic and mechanical stress), T-type VGCCs (electrical potential), and mechanical sensitive ion channels (mechanical loading) all demonstrated critical roles in controlling the [Ca2+ ]i responses of in situ chondrocyte in the loaded cartilage. This study provided new knowledge about the [Ca2+ ]i signaling and mechanobiology of chondrocytes in its natural residing environment. © 2017 Orthopaedic Research Society. This study has investigated the bioavailability of calcium in eggshell powder (ESP) for the purpose of reutilizing eggshells as the calcium source. The experiment was designed 2 X 2 factorial method with two sources, CaCO3 and ESP, and two levels, 0.2% and 0.4% calcium. Weanling SD rats were assigned randomly to one of 4 groups and provided by one of the isocaloric, 20% casein based 4 different experimental diets for 4weeks. Deionized water was given and environment was kept from any contamination of minerals. The body weight, diet intake, feed efficiency ratio (FER), bone growth, Ca contents of bones, and apparent absorption were measured. FER (0.38 - 0.40) and kidney weight were not different among groups and the weight and length, Ca content, strength of two bones Tibia and Femur were not affected by Ca sources except Femur Ca content. Ca content of Femur was greater in ESP groups than that of CaCO3 groups. The body weight gain, bone growth, the Ca contents and strength of bones were significantly greater in 0.4% calcium groups suggesting 0.2% calcium is not sufficient for the optimum growth in the growing rats. These results indicate that ESP be a proper Ca source comparable or superior to CaCO3. However the apparent absorption rate of final 3 days of feeding did not support the observed results showing lower rate in ESP than CaCO3 groups. Further study be needed in the absorption aspect.
