RESUMO

The crista terminalis is an anatomical structure localized on the posterolateral wall of the right atrium (RA). We performed a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis concerning cases of unusual prominent crista terminalis mimicking RA mass. Moreover, we described the differential diagnosis of cardiac masses with the use of echocardiography, computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). We also emphasize the potential importance of this structure in electrophysiological procedures, including its role in exaggerated arrhythmias. Prominent crista terminalis may be a potential obstacle during invasive cardiac procedures or catheter ablation target. In analyzed cases, the crista terminalis was often erroneously interpreted as pathologic and at first confused with a thrombus or tumor during transthoracic echocardiography examination. The correct final diagnoses were mostly made with used transesophageal echocardiography or CMR. The most important imaging findings suggestive of prominent crista terminalis rather than tumor were a similar echogenicity/intensity with adjacent myocardium, the location on posterolateral wall of the RA, the phasic change in size, and no enhancement after contrast injection. We describe up to date and detailed imaging features for the differential diagnostics of selected intracardiac masses using various imaging techniques, including multimodality cardiac imaging. Familiarity with the anatomy and the imaging findings of the prominent crista terminalis will reduce misdiagnosis and avoid additional tests and unwarranted clinical interventions, while in patients considered for invasive cardiac procedures it might increase their efficacy and safety.

Bushcrickets (katydids) rely on only 20 to 120 sensory units located in their forelegs to sense sound. Situated in tiny hearing organs less than 1 mm long (40× shorter than the human cochlea), they cover a wide frequency range from 1 kHz up to ultrasounds, in tonotopic order. The underlying mechanisms of this miniaturized frequency-place map are unknown. Sensory dendrites in the hearing organ (crista acustica [CA]) are hypothesized to stretch, thereby driving mechanostransduction and frequency tuning. However, this has not been experimentally confirmed. Using optical coherence tomography (OCT) vibrometry, we measured the relative motion of structures within and adjacent to the CA of the bushcricket Mecopoda elongata We found different modes of nanovibration in the CA that have not been previously described. The two tympana and the adjacent septum of the foreleg that enclose the CA were recorded simultaneously, revealing an antiphasic lever motion strikingly reminiscent of vertebrate middle ears. Over the entire length of the CA, we were able to separate and compare vibrations of the top (cap cells) and base (dorsal wall) of the sensory tissue. The tuning of these two structures, only 15 to 60 µm (micrometer) apart, differed systematically in sharpness and best frequency, revealing a tuned periodic deformation of the CA. The relative motion of the two structures, a potential drive of transduction, demonstrated sharper tuning than either of them. The micromechanical complexity indicates that the bushcricket ear invokes multiple degrees of freedom to achieve frequency separation with a limited number of sensory cells.

A frontal plane metatarsal rotational (pronation) has been documented in a high percentage of hallux valgus patients. Pathoanatomical concepts leading to pronation are still debated. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on how to measure this component of the deformity. The aim of the present study was to find potential associations between sesamoid's crista osteoarthritis and the frontal plane deformity in HV cases. Our study showed a moderate correlation between the crista's OA and the intermetatarsal angle (IMA), the hallux valgus angle (HVA) and the alpha angle. In severe hallux vulgus deformed specimens, with an eroded intersesamoid crista, frontal plane pronation was not as prevalent nor severe as in those without osteoarthritic degeneration. Severe hallux valgus cases with a completely eroded crista, showed lower pronation, and higher IMA, when compared to specimens with a preserved anatomy. This brings to light the intersesamoid crista's unique function in retaining the IMA. Understanding the role the frontal plane plays in hallux valgus' biomechanics and in its radiographic appearance is vital to change the current paradigm.

The mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm ) is the main driver of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). The inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), consisting of cristae and inner boundary membranes (IBM), is considered to carry a uniform ΔΨm . However, sequestration of OXPHOS components in cristae membranes necessitates a re-examination of the equipotential representation of the IMM. We developed an approach to monitor ΔΨm at the resolution of individual cristae. We found that the IMM was divided into segments with distinct ΔΨm , corresponding to cristae and IBM. ΔΨm was higher at cristae compared to IBM. Treatment with oligomycin increased, whereas FCCP decreased, ΔΨm heterogeneity along the IMM. Impairment of cristae structure through deletion of MICOS-complex components or Opa1 diminished this intramitochondrial heterogeneity of ΔΨm . Lastly, we determined that different cristae within the individual mitochondrion can have disparate membrane potentials and that interventions causing acute depolarization may affect some cristae while sparing others. Altogether, our data support a new model in which cristae within the same mitochondrion behave as independent bioenergetic units, preventing the failure of specific cristae from spreading dysfunction to the rest.

RESUMO

Right-to-left shunt in atrial septal defect without pulmonary hypertension is a rare condition and can present with complications such as cyanosis. This is a rare case of cyanosis caused by right-to-left shunt atrial septal defect related to prominent crista terminalis.

The mitochondrial inner membrane can reshape under different physiological conditions. How, at which frequency this occurs in living cells, and the molecular players involved are unknown. Here, we show using state-of-the-art live-cell stimulated emission depletion (STED) super-resolution nanoscopy that neighbouring crista junctions (CJs) dynamically appose and separate from each other in a reversible and balanced manner in human cells. Staining of cristae membranes (CM), using various protein markers or two lipophilic inner membrane-specific dyes, further revealed that cristae undergo continuous cycles of membrane remodelling. These events are accompanied by fluctuations of the membrane potential within distinct cristae over time. Both CJ and CM dynamics depended on MIC13 and occurred at similar timescales in the range of seconds. Our data further suggest that MIC60 acts as a docking platform promoting CJ and contact site formation. Overall, by employing advanced imaging techniques including fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), single-particle tracking (SPT), live-cell STED and high-resolution Airyscan microscopy, we propose a model of CJ dynamics being mechanistically linked to CM remodelling representing cristae membrane fission and fusion events occurring within individual mitochondria.

Flavonoids are a secondary metabolite group with various bioactivities, such as antioxidants. They are rich in the genus Erythrina, such as Erythrina crista-galli. This research aims to isolate and characterize flavonoids from the twigs of E. crista-galli and determine their antioxidant properties through in silico and in vitro assays. The ethyl acetate extract of E. crista-galli twigs were separated by column chromatography and characterized using spectroscopic methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on the isolated flavonoids and the reference compounds (ascorbic acid and quercetin) to obtain global descriptive parameters and a donor-acceptor map (DAM). We successfully isolated lupinifolin (1) and citflavanone (2) for the first time from E. crista-galli, along with lonchocarpol A (3), which has been discovered previously. The DAM suggests that these flavanones are good antiradicals with effective electron donors. However, they tend to be electron acceptors in methanol. The frontier molecular orbital analysis implies that lupinifolin (1) is a better antiradical than the other flavanones. The DPPH assays show that lupinifolin (1) has the highest antioxidant (antiradical) activity, with an IC50 value of 128.64 ppm. The in silico studies showed similar trends to the in vitro assays using the DPPH method.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the dimensions of the crista galli (CG) in preserved skulls, and to examine the role of the morphometry and morphology of the CG on the sex estimation. METHODS: Anteroposterior, superoinferior, and laterolateral diameters of the CG were measured of 207 preserved adult skulls of Anatolia origin with known sex (108 males, 99 females) in the Anatolian population. CG were morphologically classified into three types according to the dimensions. The success of CG dimensions in sex determination was evaluated with ROC analysis, and univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis. The relationship between morphological types of the CG and sex was analyzed with the Chi-square test. RESULTS: The anteroposterior and superoinferior diameters of the CG significantly were longer in males than females while the laterolateral diameter of the CG was wider in females (p < 0.001). Superoposterior diameter (88.4%) of the CG showed higher sex classification accuracy for sex estimation compared to the laterolateral (82.6%) and anteroposterior diameters (80.6%). When all three parameters were used together, the sex classification accuracy rate was 94.2%. The presence of ossified and tubular types of CG identified the male sex with 85% and 74.6% accuracy rates, respectively while teardrop type CG identified female sex with a 72.2% accuracy rate. CONCLUSION: CG exhibits sexual dimorphism both morphometrically and morphologically. The height, length, and width measurements and the morphological types of CG can be used in sex determination directly from the skull with high accuracy rates.

OBJECTIVE: Determine the frequency of crista galli (crest of the rooster) pneumatization and the presence of communication of the pneumatized crista galli with the paranasal sinuses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computed tomography data of the paranasal sinuses of 251 patients. The patients' age ranged from 23 to 70 years. Variations in crista galli were classified according to the degree of pneumatization. RESULTS: The pneumatic type of crista galli structure was observed in 14.7% of cases. The most commonly crista galli pneumatized had a connection with the frontal sinus. In some cases, in the presence of sinusitis, the crista galli cavity was involved in the inflammatory process. The article presents a case of inflammation of pneumatized crista galli, in which a patient complained of a stubborn headache in the frontal sinus. Attention is drawn to the importance of diagnosing this pathology using objective imaging methods. Videoendoscopy and computed tomography revealed crista galli pneumatization with thickening of the mucous membrane and the presence of fluid. As a result, the optimal surgical approach was chosen - transseptal dissection with removal of one of the walls of pneumatized crista galli.

INTRODUCTION: The right atrial posterior wall (RAPW) is known to form a conduction barrier during typical atrial flutter (AFL). We evaluated the transverse conduction properties of RAPW in patients with and without typical AFL using an ultrahigh resolution electroanatomical mapping system. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 41 patients who underwent catheter ablation of AF, typical or atypical AFL, in whom we performed RAPW mapping with an ultrahigh resolution mapping system during typical AFL and coronary sinus ostial pacing with three different pacing cycle lengths (PCLs) (1) PCL1: PCL within 40 ms of the AFL cycle length in patients with typical AFL or 250-300 ms for those without, (2) PCL2: 400 ms, (3) PCL3: PCL just faster than the sinus rate. Local RAPW conduction block was evaluated by propagation mapping and local double potentials separated by an isoelectric line. The functional block was defined as areas blocked during shorter PCLs but conductive during longer PCLs. The degree of blockade was calculated by dividing the blocked length by RAPW length (%blockade). Only two patients demonstrated a fixed complete RAPW block (100%, %blockade). Thirty-one patients demonstrated a partial block of RAPW, and the %blockade during PCL1-3 was 49.4 ± 19.8%, 39.5 ± 19.2%, and 35.0 ± 22.9% in this group, respectively. Functional block areas were frequently observed above the fixed block area adjacent to the RA-inferior vena cava junction. Transverse conduction block was more frequently observed in patients with typical AFL at any longitudinal level of RAPW. CONCLUSION: RAPW transverse conduction block is lower-side dominant and greater in patients with typical AFL than those without.

OBJECTIVE: Disulfiram has been repurposed as a potential candidate to suppress various cancers. However, its anti-tumor effects and molecular mechanisms of oral squamous cell carcinoma remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess the anti-cancer activity and underlying mechanisms of disulfiram in the context of oral squamous cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We tested the cytotoxicity of disulfiram in oral squamous cell carcinoma using a 3D culture model and a PDX model. Cell proliferation, cell death, and related signaling pathways were evaluated. Mitochondrial DNA copy number, mitochondrial respiration, mitochondrial mass, and mitochondrial complexes were analyzed. RESULTS: Disulfiram can induce excessive autophagy in oral squamous cell carcinoma cells as a result of OXPHOS deficiency. Disulfiram-induced OPA1 degradation can impair the functional cristae structure, which results in a dramatic reduction in mitochondrial respiration capability as well as ATP production. Subsequently, energy deprivation leads to excessive autophagy through AMPK activation. In addition, exogenous ATP blocked the activation of AMPK and rescued disulfiram-induced cell death. CONCLUSION: DSF targets mitochondrial inner membrane protein OPA1 to disturb the energy supply, triggering excessive autophagy, and cell death in OSCC. Our study suggests OPA1-dependent ATP generation is pharmacologically targetable in OSCC treatment.

Vestibular afferent neurons convey information from hair cells in the peripheral vestibular end organs to central nuclei. Primary vestibular afferent neurons can fire action potentials at high rates and afferent firing patterns vary with the position of nerve terminal endings in vestibular neuroepithelia. Terminals contact hair cells as small bouton or large calyx endings. To investigate the role of Na+ currents (INa) in firing mechanisms, we investigated biophysical properties of INa in calyx-bearing afferents. Whole cell patch-clamp recordings were made from calyx terminals in thin slices of gerbil crista at different postnatal ages: immature [postnatal day (P)5-P8, young (P13-P15), and mature (P30-P45)]. A large transient Na+ current (INaT) was completely blocked by 300 nM tetrodotoxin (TTX) in mature calyces. In addition, INaT was accompanied by much smaller persistent Na+ currents (INaP) and distinctive resurgent Na+ currents (INaR), which were also blocked by TTX. ATX-II, a toxin that slows Na+ channel inactivation, enhanced INaP in immature and mature calyces. 4,9-Anhydro-TTX (4,9-ah-TTX), which selectively blocks Nav1.6 channels, abolished the enhanced INa in mature, but not immature, calyces. Therefore, Nav1.6 channels mediate a component of INaT and INaP in mature calyces, but are minimally expressed at early postnatal days. INaR was expressed in less than one-third of calyces at P6-P8, but expression increased with development, and in mature cristae INaR was frequently found in peripheral calyces. INaR served to increase the availability of Na+ channels following brief membrane depolarizations. In current clamp, the rate and regularity of action potential firing decreased in mature peripheral calyces following 4,9-ah-TTX application. Therefore, Nav1.6 channels are upregulated during development, contribute to INaT, INaP, and INaR, and may regulate excitability by enabling higher mean discharge rates in a subpopulation of mature calyx afferents.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Action potential firing patterns differ between groups of afferent neurons innervating vestibular epithelia. We investigated the biophysical properties of Na+ currents in specialized vestibular calyx afferent terminals during postnatal development. Mature calyces express Na+ currents with transient, persistent, and resurgent components. Nav1.6 channels contribute to resurgent Na+ currents and may enhance firing in peripheral calyx afferents. Understanding Na+ channels that contribute to vestibular nerve responses has implications for developing new treatments for vestibular dysfunction.

Mitochondria perform a plethora of functions in various cells of different tissues. Their architecture differs remarkably, for instance in neurons versus steroidogenic cells. Furthermore, aberrant mitochondrial architecture results in mitochondrial dysfunction. This indicates strongly that mitochondrial architecture and function are intimately linked. Therefore, a deep knowledge about the determinants of mitochondrial architecture and their function on a molecular level is of utmost importance. In the past decades, various proteins and protein complexes essential for formation of mitochondrial architecture have been identified. Here we will review the current knowledge of the MICOS complex, one of the major structural elements of mitochondria. MICOS is a multi-subunit complex present in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Multiple interaction partners in the inner and outer mitochondrial membrane point to participation in a multitude of important processes, such as generation of mitochondrial architecture, lipid metabolism, and protein import into mitochondria. Since the MICOS complex is highly conserved in form and function throughout evolution, we will highlight the importance of MICOS for mammals. We will emphasize in particular the current knowledge of the association of MICOS with severe human diseases, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Frontotemporal Dementia and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

The LIM homeodomain transcription factor Lmx1a shows a dynamic expression in the developing mouse ear that stabilizes in the non-sensory epithelium. Previous work showed that Lmx1a functional null mutants have an additional sensory hair cell patch in the posterior wall of a cochlear duct and have a mix of vestibular and cochlear hair cells in the basal cochlear sensory epithelium. In E13.5 mutants, Sox2-expressing posterior canal crista is continuous with an ectopic "crista sensory epithelium" located in the outer spiral sulcus of the basal cochlear duct. The medial margin of cochlear crista is in contact with the adjacent Sox2-expressing basal cochlear sensory epithelium. By E17.5, this contact has been interrupted by the formation of an intervening non-sensory epithelium, and Atoh1 is expressed in the hair cells of both the cochlear crista and the basal cochlear sensory epithelium. Where cochlear crista was formerly associated with the basal cochlear sensory epithelium, the basal cochlear sensory epithelium lacks an outer hair cell band, and gaps are present in its associated Bmp4 expression. Further apically, where cochlear crista was never present, the cochlear sensory epithelium forms a poorly ordered but complete organ of Corti. We propose that the core prosensory posterior crista is enlarged in the mutant when the absence of Lmx1a expression allows JAG1-NOTCH signaling to propagate into the adjacent epithelium and down the posterior wall of the cochlear duct. We suggest that the cochlear crista propagates in the mutant outer spiral sulcus because it expresses Lmo4 in the absence of Lmx1a.

Rhythm control of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) patients represents a challenge for the modern interventional cardiac electrophysiologist; as a matter of fact, there is still divergence regarding the best ablative approach to adopt in this population. Different investigational endpoints, variability of techniques and tools, significant technological evolution, and the lack of universally accepted pathophysiological models engendered a considerable heterogeneity in terms of techniques and outcomes, so much that the treatment of persistent subtypes of AF commonly still relies mainly on pulmonary vein (PV) isolation. The purpose of the present review is to report the current experimental and clinical evidence supporting the importance of mapping and ablating non-PV triggers and describe our institutional approach for the ablation of nonparoxysmal AF.

The mammalian vestibular epithelia exhibit a remarkably stereotyped organization featuring cellular characteristics under planar cell polarity (PCP) control. PCP mechanisms are responsible for the organization of hair cell morphologic polarization vectors, and are thought to be responsible for the postsynaptic expression of the calcium-binding protein calretinin that defines the utricular striola and cristae central zone. However, recent analyses revealed that subtle differences in the topographic expression of oncomodulin, another calcium-binding protein, reflects heterogeneous factors driving the subtle variations in expression. Calbindin represents a third calcium-binding protein that has been previously described to be expressed in both hair cells and afferent calyces in proximity to the utricular striola and crista central zone. The objective of the present investigation was to determine calbindin's topographic pattern of expression to further elucidate the extent to which PCP mechanisms might exert control over the organization of vestibular neuroepithelia. The findings revealed that calbindin exhibited an expression pattern strikingly similar to oncomodulin. However, within calyces of the central zone calbindin was colocalized with calretinin. These results indicate that organizational features of vestibular epithelia are governed by a suite of factors that include PCP mechanisms as well others yet to be defined.

Acanthosis nigricans is associated with numerous systemic disorders. These include endocrinological conditions such as, diabetes, acromegaly, Cushing's syndrome, thyroid dysfunction, as well as metabolic abnormalities like obesity and polycystic ovarian disease. Its association with visceral malignancy is known. Moreover, Acanthosis nigricans is known to be a cutaneous marker of insulin resistance (IR) and hyperinsulinemia. The primary aim of this study was to study clinical and histopathological patterns of acanthosis nigricans and its correlation with dermoscopic patterns and treatment implications. 103 patients clinically diagnosed as acanthosis nigricans were enrolled in the study. Clinical evaluation, dermoscopy, and skin biopsy was done for histopathological evaluation. Consistency was observed in the changes seen on dermoscopy with clinical and histopathological findings. Common dermoscopy findings were Crista Cutis, Sulcus Cutis, Papillary projections, hyperpigmented dots, crypts, and blotching Dermoscopic findings can be correlated with histopathological features. Dermoscopy allows visualization on higher magnification which helps to pick up subtle changes which are not visible to naked eye. Dermoscopy can be a useful tool to distinguish acanthosis nigricans from other pigmentary disorders in patients who are not willing for histopathological examination and helps in treatment making decisions.

BACKGROUND: Incomplete right bundle branch block (IRBBB) is prevalent among athletes, but its etiology remains to be clearly elucidated and the commonly advocated mechanism, an intraventricular conduction delay, does not explain all cases. In the general population, an apparently similar phenomenon but with different pathophysiology and potential consequences, "crista supraventricularis pattern" (CSP, defined as QRS ≤ 100 ms, S wave <40 ms in I or V6 together with an RSR´ pattern in lead-V1) has been described. Yet, this manifestation has not been studied in athletes. Given that IRBBB can be associated with some serious conditions (including Brugada syndrome, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, or atrial septal defects) the differentiation between IRBB and CSP could enhance the accuracy of the pre-participation screening (PPS). We thus aimed to determine the prevalence of CSP in young athletes. METHODS: Observational study of standard 12-lead resting ECG in a cohort of children (5-16 years) attending a PPS program (August 2018-May 2019). RESULTS: 6,401 children (mean ± SD age 11.2 ± 2.9 years, 99.2% Caucasian, 93.8% male, 97.2% soccer players) were studied. We found CSP in 850 participants (prevalence = 13.3% [95% confidence interval 12.5-14.1]) whereas 553 (8.6%) had IRBBB. The proportion of athletes showing an S1S2S3 pattern was higher in those with CSP compared with the other QRS morphologies (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: CSP might have been overlooked in previous reports of sports PPS for children and misdiagnosed as IRBBB, as the proportion of the former condition was higher. Our findings might add useful information to improve the interpretation of the young athletes' ECG and thus the diagnostic value of PPS.

Erythrina crista-galli L. (Fabaceae) is a popular ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical regions of South Asia. In October 2019, anthracnose-like lesions were observed on the leaves of E. crista-galli planted in Haikou, China. 5-30% of leaves were infected. At first, the circular spots of 1-2 mm in diameter were reddish-brown on the leaves, and then enlarged to circular, subcircular or irregular spots with reddish-brown center and surrounded by a diffuse yellow margin. Neighboring spots sometimes coalesced. Under continuously wet or humid conditions, the lesions expanded quickly, and became gray, subcircular or irregular spots covered by grayish-white mycelium and orange-pink conidial masses. Diseased leaves eventually fell off the trees. To identify the pathogen, diseased leaves were sampled from four gardens. Leaf tissues (5×5 mm) were cut from the margins of typical symptomatic lesions, surface-sterilized in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium, and incubated at 28.0±0.5℃ in the dark. Similar fungal colonies were obtained from all plated tissues after 3 days. The single-conidium colonies of all isolates were white to pale gray and cottony with visible orange conidial masses. Conidia were one-celled, aseptate, hyaline, straight, cylindrical to fusiform with obtuse ends, and ranged from 14.2-18.6 µm (16.4 µm)× 3.8-5.4 µm (4.7 µm) (n=100). After germination, conidia formed single, brown, oval or slightly irregular appressoria ranging from 8.0 to 11.8 µm (9.6 µm), and from 4.8 to 6.0 µm (5.4 µm). Sexual stage was absent. These characteristics of conidia and appressoria were matched with C. siamense belonging to the C. gloeosporioides complex (Prihastuti et al. 2009; Yang et al. 2009; Weir et al. 20012; Hu et al. 2015). To accurately identify the species, DNA was extracted from four purified isolates (JG-1, JG-3-1, SWS-1-3, SWS-2-1) (Fu et al. 2019). The internal transcribed spacer of rDNA region (ITS), glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), calmodulin (CAL), actin (ACT) and chitin synthase (CHS) genes were amplified and sequenced. The nucleotide sequences were all deposited in GenBank (ITS: MT229427-MT229430, GAPDH: MT250821-MT250824, CAL: MT258893-MT258896, ACT: MT258897-MT258900 and CHS: MT258901-MT258904). Multi-locus phylogenetic analyses (ITS, GAPDH, CAL, ACT and CHS) (Weir et al. 2012) showed that the four isolates were clustered with C. siamense, which was in accordance with BLAST results. Pathogenicity tests of the four isolates were repeated three times on detached leaves (Ji et al. 2019). The conidial suspension (1×106 conidia/mL) was prepared using the conidia from 10-day-old cultures grown on PDA. Two 20-µL drops of conidial suspension were inoculated on non-wounded young healthy leaves, and each isolate was inoculated on 10 leaves. Two 20-µL drops of sterile water were inoculated on non-wounded young healthy leaves as control. The samples were maintained in containers at a relative humidity of 90± 5 per cent inside and 28℃ with a 12-h photoperiod. Gray, subcircular spots similar to the field disease symptoms were observed on the all inoculated leaves after 7 days, whereas no visible symptoms appeared on the non-inoculated leaves. The pathogen was re-isolated from inoculated leaves thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. C. gloeosporioides has been previously reported as a pathogen causing leaf spot on Erythrina (E. indica var. picta, E. variegata var. orientalis) in Guam in 1983 and Brazil in 2012. (Russo et al. 1983; Oliveira et al. 2012). To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. siamense causing leaf spot of E. crista-galli in China.

The semicircular canals are responsible for sensing angular head motion in three-dimensional space and for providing neural inputs to the central nervous system (CNS) essential for agile mobility, stable vision, and autonomic control of the cardiovascular and other gravity-sensitive systems. Sensation relies on fluid mechanics within the labyrinth to selectively convert angular head acceleration into sensory hair bundle displacements in each of three inner ear sensory organs. Canal afferent neurons encode the direction and time course of head movements over a broad range of movement frequencies and amplitudes. Disorders altering canal mechanics result in pathological inputs to the CNS, often leading to debilitating symptoms. Vestibular disorders and conditions with mechanical substrates include benign paroxysmal positional nystagmus, direction-changing positional nystagmus, alcohol positional nystagmus, caloric nystagmus, Tullio phenomena, and others. Here, the mechanics of angular motion transduction and how it contributes to neural encoding by the semicircular canals is reviewed in both health and disease.
