The work reported in the Research Communication investigated in vitro rumen gas kinetics and fermentation profile as well as in vivo performance of lactating ewes fed corn silage (CS), sunflower silage (SFS) and their 50 : 50 mixture (CS-SFS). For the in vivo experiment, nine early-lactation Suffolk × Texel ewes were grouped in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design of three 21-d periods. Treatments were based on ad libitum CS, SFS, and CS-SFS supplemented with concentrate at 48 g/kg LW0.75. In vitro results showed that the CS had the highest dry matter degraded substrate and microbial crude protein production followed by CS-SFS. The in vivo data showed that animals fed on CS had higher digestibility of dry matter and organic matter than CS-SFS, while SFS were intermediate. Nitrogen (N) intake, fecal N excretion, and urine N excretion were similar between groups, however, milk N excretion was lower in SFS than CS. Milk yield was higher for CS and CS-SFS than SFS group, however, SFS-fed ewes had higher milk fat content than either CS or CS-SFS (all differences reported here were significant, P < 0.05 or better). Overall, CS-SFS could be used as dietary roughage for dairy ewes without deleterious effects on nutrient intake, N-balance and milk yield whilst potentially offering a more sustainable alternative to CS.

This study aimed to determine the effect of the addition of rumen-protected palm oil making up 3% of the ration on lipid health indices and milk fatty acid composition of Kivircik ewes'. Kivircik ewes at two years of age, the same parity, lactation stage, and the same bodyweight (52.57 ± 5.80 kg) were chosen for this purpose. Two groups were formed, in which the control group was fed a basal diet without feed supplementation, whereas the treatment group received rumen-protected palm oil which corresponded to 3% of the ration. In order to protect palm oil, it was coated with calcium salts. Treatment increased the palmitic acid (C16:0) content of milk compared to the control group (P < 0.05) and tended to increase saturated fatty acids (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (P = 0.14). An increase in SFA and MUFA was attributed to an increase in palmitic acid and oleic acid (C18:1), respectively (P < 0.05). Results indicated that the omega-6/omega-3 ratio (n-6/n-3) ranged between 0.61 and 2.63. The inclusion of palm oil in the diet tended to increase desirable fatty acids (DFAs) regardless of the week of milk sampled (P = 0.42). Treatment did not improve the atherogenicity index (AI), thrombogenicity index (TI), health-promoting index (HPI), and hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic (h/H) ratio. Results showed that adding rumen-protected palm oil is a plausible method to meet the energy intake of ewes required during lactation without negatively affecting lipid health indices.

Application of phytogenic feed additives in livestock production is a sustainable practice and the search for more phytogenic options continues. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of lemongrass supplementation on nutrient utilization, rumen fermentation and milk production and composition. Thirty gestating Farafra ewes were randomly assigned to three experimental treatments of control (without a supplement), or with the supplementation of 5 g (LEM5 treatment), or 10 g of lemongrass/ewe/d (LEM10 treatment) for 12 weeks. Lemongrass supplementation at both doses did not influence ( p > 0.05) nutrient intake, but improved nutrient digestibility (p < 0.05). Furthermore, LEM5 and LEM10 treatments improved (p ≤ 0.001) ruminal total volatile fatty acids, acetate and propionate. Blood glucose was increased (p < 0.05) and cholesterol was decreased in ewes supplemented with lemongrass at both doses. Milk yield, energy corrected milk yield, and milk component were improved (p ≤ 0.001) in ewes supplemented with lemongrass at 5 and 10 g while the feed efficiency was decreased. Lemongrass supplementation at both doses increased (p = 0.040) the proportion of milk total conjugated linoleic acid without affecting other milk fatty acids. In most of the parameters evaluated, there was no significant difference between LEM5 and LEM10. Therefore, lemongrass supplementation at 5 g/ewe/d can be used in dairy production with positive impacts.

The main objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of two milking intervals (8 and 16 h) on milk constituents (fat, protein, lactose, dry matter, and log10 SCC) of nineteen Istrian × Awassi × East-Friesian crossbred ewes in different milk fractions (0-25, 25-50, 50-75 and 75-100%) during the course of milking and in machine stripping (MS) milk. Furthermore, we sought to determine the effect of the two milking intervals on milking characteristics (average milk flow rate, peak milk flow rate, machine-on time, total milk yield, and milk production rate) and whether each milk constituent within each milking interval is best described by a linear, quadratic, or cubic function. Average milk flow rate and milk yield per milking decreased in the 8 h milking interval compared to the 16 h milking interval (P < 0.05). Peak milk flow rate, machine-on time, and milk production rate were not different between the two milking intervals. Overall, milk fat content, dry matter content, and log10 SCC increased in the 8 h milking interval compared to the 16 h milking interval (P < 0.05). Milk protein content did not change through the main milk fractions at either milking interval. Milk lactose content did not change through the milk fractions at the 8 h milking interval, whereas it decreased in the 75-100% and stripping milk fractions at the 16 h milking interval (P < 0.05). The 0-25% and stripping milk fractions contained the highest log10 SCC compared to all other milk fractions (P < 0.05). Changes of milk fat and dry matter content throughout milking were best described by quadratic functions, whereas milk protein content, milk lactose content, and log10 SCC were best described by different functions depending on the milking interval. These results demonstrate that milking interval influenced all milk constituents in various milk fractions during the course of ewe milking. Moreover, milking characteristics such as average milk flow and total milk yield, and the appropriate mathematical function to characterize milk constituents throughout a milking, were affected by milking interval.

Sheep milk production is incipient in Mexico with scarce knowledge on the performance of dairy ewes from different breeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of breed (Awassi (Aw), East Friesian (EF) and other (Ot)), parity number (1, 2 and 3 or more (+ 3)), litter size (1 and 2 or more (+ 2)) and lambing season (spring-summer (SS) and autumn-winter (AW)) on day of peak yield (DP), peak yield (PY), persistency (P), total milk yield (TMY), 305-day milk yield (TMY305d), 150-day milk yield (TMY150d) and lactation length (LL) of crossbred dairy ewes in a flock of the central highlands of Mexico. A total of 4312 weekly milk yield records collected from 2014 to 2015 were used to model 133 lactations using a random regression model with a fifth-order orthogonal polynomial. Flock mean values of curve parameters were 42 days at DP, 1.2 kg/day at PY, - 3.5 g/day of P, 190 kg TMY, 189 kg TMY305, 124 kg TMY150 and 269 days of LL. Multiparous ewes had significantly higher (P < 0.05) PY and TMY than primiparous ewes. Ewes that lambed in AW had 15% higher PY and produced 14% more TMY than ewes that lambed in SS (P < 0.05). Correlations among curve parameters were significant except for the correlation between PY and LL and between P and TMY150d. TMY was strongly correlated with LL (0.91). Predominantly Awassi crossbred ewes had lower curve parameter values than predominantly East Friesian and other crossbred ewes.

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that stearic acid (SA) supplementation increases milk fat content and overcomes the antilipogenic effects of trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in lactating ewes. Twenty-eight Lacaune ewes (36 (sd 2) days in lactation; 70·5 (sd) 9·6 kg of body weight), producing 1·8 (sd 0·4) kg of milk/d, were used in a completely randomised design (seven ewes/treatment) for 21 d. The treatments were: (1) Control; (2) CLA (6·4 g/d of trans-10, cis-12 CLA); (3) SA (28 g/d of SA) and (4) SA in association with trans-10, cis-12 CLA (CLASA; 6·4 g/d of trans-10, cis-12 CLA plus 28 g/d of SA). All data were analysed using a mixed model that included the fixed effect of treatment and the random effect of ewe. SA did not alter milk fat content and yield relative to Control (91·9 v. 91·2 (sd 4·1) g/d). CLASA was not able to overcome the reduction in fat content and fat yield induced by CLA (75 v. 82 (sd 0·14) g/d). SA increased the relative abundance of CD36, fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) and PPAR-γ mRNA by 140, 112 and 68 % compared with CLASA. SA also reduced the relative abundance of acetyl-CoA carboxylase α promoter II and stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) when compared with Control (45 and 39 %). Compared with CLA, CLASA treatment had no effect on the mRNA abundance of fatty acid synthase, lipoprotein lipase, CD36, SCD, FABP4, acylglycerolphosphate acyltransferase 6, sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 and PPAR-γ. In conclusion, SA supplementation did not increase milk fat synthesis and did not overcome the CLA-induced milk fat depression when associated with trans-10, cis-12 CLA.

Heat stress (HS) has a significant economic impact on the global dairy industry. However, the mechanisms by which HS negatively affects metabolism and milk synthesis in dairy ewes are not well defined. This study evaluated the production and metabolic variables in dairy ewes under controlled HS conditions. Eight Lacaune ewes (75.5 ± 3.2 kg of body weight; 165 ± 4 d of lactation; 2.31 ± 0.04 kg of milk per day) were submitted to thermoneutral (TN) or HS conditions in a crossover design (2 periods, 21 d each, 6-d transition). Conditions (day-night, 12-12 h; relative humidity; temperature-humidity index, THI) were: TN (15-20°C; 50 ± 5%; THI = 59-65) and HS (28-35°C; 45 ± 5%; THI = 75-83). Ewes were fed ad libitum and milked twice daily. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate, feed intake, water consumption, and milk yield were recorded daily. Milk and blood samples were collected weekly. Additionally, TN and HS ewes were exposed to glucose tolerance test, insulin tolerance test, and epinephrine challenge. Heat stress reduced feed intake (-11%), and increased rectal temperature (+0.77°C), respiratory rate (+90 breaths/min), and water consumption (+28%). Despite the reduced feed intake, HS ewes produced similar milk to TN ewes, but their milk contained lower fat (-1.7 points) and protein (-0.86 points). Further, HS milk tended to contain more somatic cells (+0.23 log points). Blood creatinine was greater in HS compared with TN, but no differences in blood glucose, nonesterified fatty acids, or urea were detected. When glucose was infused, TN and HS had similar insulin response, but higher glucose response (+85%) was detected in HS ewes. Epinephrine infusion resulted in lower nonesterified fatty acids response (-215%) in HS than TN ewes. Overall, HS decreased feed intake, but milk production was not affected. Heat stress caused metabolic adaptations that included increased body muscle degradation and reduced adipose tissue mobilization. These adaptations allowed ewes to spare glucose and to avoid reductions in milk yield.

In the present study, we investigated the effect of grape seed and skin supplement (GSSS), on lactating dairy ewes' production. Ten dairy pregnant ewes from northern Tunisia were allocated to two groups: control diet (C) and supplemented with 20 % (w/w) GSSS. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks and took place after 2 months of lambing. During the experiment, daily milk yield and milk composition were determined. Supplementation of the diet with GSSS increased milk production (P < 0.001), calcium (P < 0.01), free iron (P < 0.01) and urea content (P < 0.001) but had no effect on milk fat nor protein. From these data, it is concluded that the inclusion of GSSS in sheep diets increased significantly ewes' milk yield.

Colostrum is a major source of immunity in lambs and, in general, in all newborn ruminants. It allows the transfer of antibodies from the ewe to the lamb, and it becomes the exclusive source of nutrients for a newborn. Among the most significant Pearson correlations, the positive correlation between the Brix refractive index (Brix) and protein (0.90) should be noted. Both parameters (protein percentage and Brix) were then positively correlated with the percentage of fat (0.38 and 0.41), urea (0.81 and 0.67), calcium (0.39 and 0.29), and magnesium (0.58 and 0.59), as well as the yellowness (0.78 and 0.75). Somatic cell count (SCC) and pH, parameters which are indicators of subclinical mastitis, were positively correlated (0.49), and SCC was positively correlated with sodium (0.37) and negatively correlated with potassium (-0.28). Among the macroelements in colostrum-calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium-the correlations were largely positive. With respect to the colour parameters, yellowness was negatively correlated with lightness (-0.41) and redness (-0.45). The factor analysis split the total of variance into three latent factors. The first factor was named "Colostrum quality of grazing sheep" because it was positively correlated primarily with SCC, pH, Poly Unsatured Fatty Acids (PUFA), and the sum of the omega-3 Fatty Acids (FAs). The second factor, named "Good quality colostrum", was positively correlated primarily with the refractive index, protein and fat percentages, urea content, phosphorus, Mono Unsatured Fatty Acids (MUFA), and yellowness. The third factor was positively correlated primarily with calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium, and it was therefore termed "Mineral component of colostrum". Stepwise discriminant analysis showed that the protein percentage, calcium, and magnesium were able to explain more than 85% of the Brix refractive index, which remains a good parameter for simply evaluating the nutritional quality of sheep colostrum at the level of a farm.

The collective economic and environmental interest of the whole dairy sheep sector is to reduce feed costs and the negative impact of milk production on the environment. Thus, this study focused on the characterisation and genetic selection potential of feed efficiency in the Lacaune breed. Estimates for feed efficiency in dairy ewes are limited, mainly due to a lack of individual feed intake measurements in the sheepfold or in the pasture. We estimated the genetic parameters for two approximated (not entirely based on individual data) feed efficiency traits (lactation feed conversion ratio (LFCR) and residual energy intake (REI)) and daily milk yield (DMY) at different stages of lactation and throughout lactation. The accuracy of the efficiency traits was first evaluated on samples from Lacaune dairy ewes that were monitored individually, especially for their feed intake. Then, feed efficiency estimation methods were applied on eight commercial farms corresponding to 4 680 Lacaune dairy ewes over two milk lactations (30 854 records). Animals were collectively (for a large part of feed intake) or individually (for milk performance and dynamics of body fat reserves) monitored at different lactation stages. The heritabilities of LFCR and REI were estimated over lactations at 0.10 ± 0.01 and 0.11 ± 0.01, respectively. High genetic correlations were observed between the two efficiency traits and milk production traits, with a genetic correlation between LFCR and DMY of 0.74 ± 0.04 and between REI and DMY of -0.79 ± 0.04. A strong influence of environmental factors such as farm, year of milk production and lactation stage affected the genetic link between REI and milk production traits. Efficiency values observed in early lactation when animals were bred in the sheepfold were less genetically correlated with values obtained later in lactation when animals were grass-fed. However, individual characterisation of feed efficiency remains difficult due to the collective feeding context in dairy ewe farms.

The aim of the present study was to assess whether the strategic supplementation of bypass LO can enhance reproductive indexesfertility, lambing rate, and prolificacyin dairy Sarda ewes at the end of lactation. To assess whether LO supplementation leads to the adsorptions of PUFAs and their subsequent utilization by the body tissues, milk composition and fatty acid content were analyzed. Forty-eight ewes were assigned to the following groups: the control group (CT; N = 24), fed with a control diet without LO; and the treatment group (LO; N = 24), fed with a diet supplemented with LO (10.8 g/ewe/day). Both diets had similar crude protein and energy levels and were offered for 38 days (−21 to +17 days after artificial insemination). The trial included an adaptation period (7 days) followed by a regular supplementation (31 days) period. Estrus synchronization was induced in all the ewes using an intravaginal sponge and equine chorionic gonadotropin. Fifty-five hours after pessaries withdrawal, all ewes were inseminated using the cervical route and fresh semen. Cholesterol (p < 0.01), high-density lipoprotein (p < 0.001), and triglyceride (p < 0.05) levels in plasma were higher in the LO group. Plasmatic levels of non-esterified fatty acids were lower in the LO group after the end of the supplementation period (p < 0.05). Milk unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), PUFAs omega 3 (PUFAs-ω3) and 6 (PUFAs-ω6), and trans fatty acids were higher in the LO group (p < 0.001), while saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were higher in the CT group during the supplementation period (p < 0.001). Three days after the end of the supplementation period, the content of milk UFAs (p < 0.05), PUFAs (p < 0.001), MUFAs, and PUFAs-ω6 (p < 0.01) were still higher in the LO group. whereas SFA was higher in the CT group (p < 0.01). There was no difference between groups in terms of ovulation rate, progesterone levels in plasma, fertility rate, prolificacy, and total reproductive wastage. However, the total area of luteal tissue was higher in the LO group (p < 0.01). Results obtained demonstrated that LO supplementation exerts a positive role in corpus luteum size at the onset of the peri-implantation period in Sarda dairy ewes. Additionally, the results obtained in the present study showed that the use of dietary bypass LO affects lipid metabolites in plasma and milk fatty acid profiles, demonstrating the ALA uptake by body tissues.

The aim of this study was to investigate the in vivo transfer of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) to Assaf ewes' milk (aflatoxin M1, AFM1) and its effect on animal performance and health. Thirty Assaf ewes were allocated to three groups (C, L, H), and received a different individual daily dose of AFB1 (0, 40 and 80 µg) for 13 days. Milk (days 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 14, 16 and 18) and blood (days 1, 7, 14 and 18) samples were collected. Milk yield, composition (except protein) and somatic cell counts (SCC) were not affected by AFB1 intake (p > 0.05). Haemoglobin concentration increased (p < 0.05) and haematocrit and alanine aminotransferase levels tended to increase (p < 0.10) in group H on day 14. AFM1 excretion was highly variable and detected in L and H animals from days 1 to 16 (3 days increase, 10 days steady-state, 3 days clearance). Carry-over rate (0.23%) was significantly higher in L (0.22-0.34%) than in H (0.16-0.19%) animals (p < 0.05). AFB1 daily doses of 40 to 80 µg do not impair milk yield; however, it may start affecting animals' health. Milk AFM1 depends mainly on the AFB1 intake whereas carryover rate is positively influenced by the level of milk production.

The administration of yeast products as feed additives has been proven to beneficially affect animal productivity through energy, oxidative, and immune status improvement. This study evaluated a combination of Saccharomyces cerevisiae live yeast (LY) with yeast postbiotics (rich in mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and beta-glucans) and selenium (Se)-enriched yeast on ewes' milk performance and milk quality, energy and oxidative status, and gene expression related to their immune system during the peripartum period. Ewes were fed a basal diet (BD; F:C = 58:42 prepartum and 41:59 postpartum) including inorganic Se (CON; n = 27), the BD supplemented with a LY product, and inorganic Se (AC; n = 29), as well as the combination of the LY, a product of yeast fraction rich in MOS and beta-glucans, and organic-Se-enriched yeast (ACMAN; n = 26) from 6 weeks prepartum to 6 weeks postpartum. The ß-hydroxybutyric acid concentration in the blood of AC and ACMAN ewes was lower (compared to the CON) in both pre- and postpartum periods (p < 0.010). Postpartum, milk yield was increased in the AC and ACMAN Lacaune ewes (p = 0.001). In addition, the activity of superoxide dismutase (p = 0.037) and total antioxidant capacity (p = 0.034) measured via the 2,2-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) method was increased in the blood plasma of the ACMAN postpartum. Higher ABTS values were also found (p = 0.021), while protein carbonyls were reduced (p = 0.023) in the milk of the treated groups. The relative transcript levels of CCL5 and IL6 were downregulated in the monocytes (p = 0.007 and p = 0.026 respectively), and those of NFKB were downregulated in the neutrophils of the ACMAN-fed ewes postpartum (p = 0.020). The dietary supplementation of ewes with yeast postbiotics rich in MOS and beta-glucans, and organic Se, improved energy status, milk yield and some milk constituents, and oxidative status, with simultaneous suppression of mRNA levels of proinflammatory genes during the peripartum period.

The male effect is an effective natural technique to induce off-season ovulation and ultimately mating or artificial insemination in small ruminants. It constitutes an alternative to hormonal treatments in conventional breeding systems and, to shift and organise the yearly production cycle, is currently the only solution complying with European organic standards. However, its associated performances are still heterogeneous, both in terms of the global response and the extent of reproductive synchronisation of the females, due to complex interactions with environmental factors that limit its use on commercial farms. This study was carried out on a French organic farm under commercial conditions to investigate, in the field and across five consecutive years, the main parameters affecting the early ovarian response to a ram effect on Lacaune dairy ewes. While the within-year binary logistic regressions yielded contrasting results, the cross-year mixed-effect binary logistic regression models clearly showed that parameters associated with the nutritional state of the animals have a profound influence on the ovarian response of the ewes. Indeed, the probabilities of a spontaneous resumption of ovarian activity before the ram effect and of an early ovarian response to the ram effect were positively associated with the body condition score, total milk production and the age of the animals, while being negatively associated with the milk production level at the 3rd milk recording. The probabilities of a spontaneous resumption of ovarian activity before the ram effect were positively associated with the interval between lambing and the introduction of the rams. Altogether, these results indicate that the ovarian performances in response to a male effect follow a bell-curve pattern with optimal performances depending upon a complex combination between photoperiodic and nutritional cues. Regarding these latter, this study highlights the major contribution of body reserves and energy balance dynamics.

Feeding dairy ewes with fresh sulla forage (FSF), a legume species containing condensed tannins (CT), has been shown to increase feed intake, milk yield, and casein and enhances the oxidative status of animals. Dehydration of FSF could be an alternative to hay-making to preserve the nutritional properties. This research aimed to compare the responses of dairy ewes fed with diets based on sulla hay (SH), pelleted dehydrated sulla forage (DSF), or FSF in terms of efficiency of feed utilization, milk production, and the balance between oxidant (reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs)) and antioxidant (biological antioxidant potential (BAP)) substances at the plasma level. Ten first-lambing (FL) and ten third-lambing (TL) ewes of the Valle del Belice breed at 60 days in milk were allocated into five homogeneous groups fed with different diets in a partial 5 × 2 Latin square design with two phases. The diets differed for the forage basis: SHL = SH ad libitum; DSF2 = 2 kg/day DSF per head plus SH ad libitum; FSF2 = 2 kg/day FSF per head plus SH ad libitum; FSF4 = 4 kg/day FSF per head plus SH ad libitum; FSFL = FSF ad libitum. A commercial concentrate was provided to FL (0.8 kg/day per head) and TL (1.2 kg/day per head) ewes. Dehydration induced slight variations in the content of protein and fiber, showed no loss of vitamin E and polyunsaturated fatty acids, and decreased the level of CT and polyphenols. The DSF2 diet resulted in a higher intake of dry matter, protein, and vitamin E compared to the other diets, whereas, compared to the FSFL diet, its intake was analogous for net energy and was lower in CT and polyphenols. The DSF2 diet was comparable to FSF4 and FSFL diets for milk yield, and to all diets for casein content and the clotting ability of milk. Ewes fed a DSF2 diet exhibited lowest values of ROMs and oxidative stress index (OSI = ROMs/BAP), indicating a better oxidative status, presumably due to the antioxidant protection exerted by the higher vitamin E intake and CT metabolites. These results confirmed the positive effects of FSF on milk production, especially due to CT intake, in improving the efficiency of dietary protein utilization, and showed how favorable effects also occur when FSF is replaced by DSF instead of SH.

This study investigated whether the administration of equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) in a protocol to induce and synchronize ovulations before mating could be replaced by the administration of glycerol-based formulations in milked ewes at the end of their seasonal anoestrus. Forty-eight late-lactation dairy ewes of the Sarda breed were synchronized using sponges impregnated with progestogen and then joined with fertile rams (day (D) 0, ram introduction). From D-4 to D-1, the ewes received by gavage either 100 mL of a glucogenic mixture (70% glycerol, 20% propylene glycol and 10% water; GLU group; n = 24) or 100 mL of water (GON group; n = 24) twice daily. Moreover, on the day of sponge withdrawal (D-1), GON ewes received 200 IU of eCG. There were no differences in reproductive performances between groups. GLU ewes showed higher glycemia (p < 0.001), insulinemia (p < 0.05), plasma glycerol (p < 0.001), triglycerides (p < 0.001) and lower cholesterol (p < 0.001), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA; p < 0.05) and urea (p < 0.001). Plasma osmolality was higher in GLU but only 4 h after dosing (p < 0.001). Milk yield and milk composition were not affected by the treatments with exception of milk glycerol (p < 0.001) and milk urea (p < 0.001), which were higher and lower in GLU than GON ewes, respectively. In conclusion, the administration of the glucogenic mixture to late lactation dairy ewes at the end of anoestrus period resulted in reproductive responses as good as the ones obtained by the eCG treatment, suggesting that the objective of a sustainable reproductive management of dairy sheep can be successfully pursued.

Intramammary infections (IMIs) caused by various pathogens may lead to clinical or subclinical mastitis, challenging the health and welfare status of infected animals and decreasing the quantity and quality of the produced milk. Additionally, the zoonotic potential of some of the pathogens isolated from IMI cases, the emergence of antibiotic resistance due to the extensive antibiotic use for IMI treatment, and the accumulation of antibiotic residues in milk and meat represent significant concerns for public health. Therefore, the investigation of IMI risk factors and the proposal of efficient measures to mitigate their effects on animal health and welfare is crucial. Although fly infestation is considered to play a significant role in the transmission of IMI pathogens, its adverse effects on udder health and the overall comfort status of dairy ewes have not been quantified and assessed on an evidential basis. Hence, the objectives of this study were to assess, for the first time, the fly repellent effect of deltamethrin and link it to: (i) the occurrence of common bacterial IMI; (ii) the somatic cell counts in milk; and (iii) the serum cortisol and creatine kinase levels (stress and fatigue indicators). The study was carried out in an intensive dairy sheep farm in northern Greece, during peak fly season. Deltamethrin treatment was associated with a reduced (i) number of flies (mostly Musca domestica) landing on treated ewes, compared to untreated ones (p < 0.05); (ii) colony-forming units in the case of Non-aureus Staphylococci IMIs (p < 0.05); and (iii) number of somatic cells in the milk (p < 0.001). Finally, serum cortisol and creatine kinase levels were significantly lower in deltamethrin-treated ewes (p < 0.001), indicating a less stressful environment for them.

The aim of this study was to characterize the MTNR1A locus in Sarda sheep breed, in order to identify potential single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with reproductive resumption. The reproductive performance of 200 lactating ewes, aged 3-5 years, with body condition score (BCS) 2.5-4.0, at least at their third lambing were monitored for two consecutive years. In both year the enrolled ewes were exposed for 100 days to 10 adult, fertile rams. Mating, pregnancy and lambing for each ewe were recorded in order to evaluate differences in reproductive performance according to the analysed genotypes. From individual blood samples, DNA was extracted to amplify and to sequence promotor, the coding region, a part of intron and of 3' Untranslated region (3' UTR) of the MTNR1A gene. A total number of 29 SNPs were found (named SNP1 to SNP29), five of which caused also amino acid changes. The polymorphic sites found at positions g.17355452C > T (SNP16, rs430181568) and g.17355358C > T (SNP17, rs407388227) were linked (D' = 1 and r2 = 1) and showed a significant association to DRIL trait (distance in days from ram introduction to lambing). In both years, the ewes carrying C/C genotype in both these polymorphic sites showed the lowest DRIL compared to the other genotypes (P < 0.05). The ewes carrying C/C and T/C genotype exhibited the lambing peak at 170 days, and approximately 60% of the total lambing at 180 days from the ram introduction. Instead, ewes carrying T/T genotype showed the lambing peak around 200 days after ram introduction. Six haplotypes have been identified and the most frequent haplotype was also associated with lower DRIL (P < 0.05). Litter size displayed no statistical significance either among genotypes or among haplotypes. This study provided the major part of the MTNR1A gene in Sarda sheep breed and evidenced that SNP17 is associated with a shorter DRIL. The obtained results underlined the role of this polymorphism in improving reproductive efficiency in Sarda sheep and provides a suitable information for improving genetic selection.

This study examined the intraflock variability of feed efficiency in dairy ewes, through monitoring residual feed intakes (RFI). Primiparous lactating ewes (n = 43; 57.7 ± 0.91 kg body weight [BW] at lambing), representative of a French Lacaune dairy flock, were allocated in an equilibrated 2 × 2 factorial design experiment, lasting for 63 days during mid-lactation and combining 2 litter sizes (singletons, SING or twins, TWIN) and 2 daily milking frequencies (once, ONE or twice, TWO). Weaning occurred, and milking started, at 35 days after lambing (DIM). Ewes were individually fed a diet based on ryegrass silage, local hay, and supplements. Individual DMI was recorded daily and further used to evaluate (and compare) differences in RFI between ewes at 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, and 98. Average individual RFI were calculated weekly since the first week (i.e., 35-42 DIM). Total (BW) and metabolic (BW0.75) body weight, body condition score (BCS), milk yield, and plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were monitored weekly. Differences in DMI were mainly due to the lactation stage and litter size and were 11% higher in ewes with TWIN compared to SING. This was positively correlated to milk yield and consistent with differences in RFI which varied due to litter size and to the milking frequency × lactation stage interaction. Ewes that lambed SING showed higher feed efficiency (-0.08 ± 0.018 vs. 0.13 ± 0.014 kg DM/ewe/d of RFI in SING vs. TWIN, respectively), whereas there were no differences in BW or BCS. Milking frequency did not affect DMI but milk yields were higher in TWO, which was related to a higher feed efficiency in this group (0.115 ± 0.016 vs. -0.07 ± 0.016 kg DM/ewe/d of RFI in ONE vs. TWO, respectively). Average RFI was affected (p < 0.0001) by the ewe, thus allowing a ranking among individuals to be established. High (n = 22) or low (n = 21) feed efficiency ewes averaged -0.17 ± 0.09 or 0.18 ± 0.09 kg DM/d RFI, respectively. Estimates of RFI were not correlated to the individual milk production potential. Even if no differences in BW, BW0.75, or BCS were detected, high-efficiency ewes mobilized 1.5 times their body reserves (0.30 vs. 0.20 mmol NEFA/L of plasma) when compared to the low-efficiency group. The observed intraflock variability in feed efficiency of this dairy ewes' flock was affected by litter size and milking frequency but also by evident differences between individuals' physiologies.
