RESUMO

Fluorinated proton-exchange membranes (PEMs) based on graft copolymers of dehydrofluorinated polyvinylidene fluoride (D-PVDF), 3-sulfopropyl acrylate (SPA), and 1H, 1H, 2H-perfluoro-1-hexene (PFH) were prepared via free radical copolymerization and characterized for fuel cell application. The membrane morphology and physical properties were studied via small-(SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), SEM, and DSC. It was found that the crystallinity degree is 17% for PEM-RCF (co-polymer with SPA) and 16% for PEM-RCF-2 (copolymer with SPA and PFH). The designed membranes possess crystallite grains of 5-6 nm in diameter. SEM images reveal a structure with open pores on the surface of diameters from 20 to 140 nm. Their transport and electrochemical characterization shows that the lowest membrane area resistance (0.9 Ωcm2) is comparable to perfluorosulfonic acid PEMs (such as Nafion®) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based CJMC cation-exchange membranes (ChemJoy Polymer Materials, China). Key transport and physicochemical properties of new and commercial membranes were compared. The PEM-RCF permeability to NaCl diffusion is rather high, which is due to a relatively low concentration of fixed sulfonate groups. Voltammetry confers that the electrochemical behavior of new PEM correlates to that of commercial cation-exchange membranes, while the ionic conductivity reveals an impact of the extended pores, as in track-etched membranes.

RESUMO

It is known that ammonium has a higher permeability through anion exchange and bipolar membranes compared to K+ cation that has the same mobility in water. However, the mechanism of this high permeability is not clear enough. In this study, we develop a mathematical model based on the Nernst−Planck and Poisson's equations for the diffusion of ammonium chloride through an anion-exchange membrane; proton-exchange reactions between ammonium, water and ammonia are taken into account. It is assumed that ammonium, chloride and OH− ions can only pass through membrane hydrophilic pores, while ammonia can also dissolve in membrane matrix fragments not containing water and diffuse through these fragments. It is found that due to the Donnan exclusion of H+ ions as coions, the pH in the membrane internal solution increases when approaching the membrane side facing distilled water. Consequently, there is a change in the principal nitrogen-atom carrier in the membrane: in the part close to the side facing the feed NH4Cl solution (pH < 8.8), it is the NH4+ cation, and in the part close to distilled water, NH3 molecules. The concentration of NH4+ reaches almost zero at a point close to the middle of the membrane cross-section, which approximately halves the effective thickness of the diffusion layer for the transport of this ion. When NH3 takes over the nitrogen transport, it only needs to pass through the other half of the membrane. Leaving the membrane, it captures an H+ ion from water, and the released OH− moves towards the membrane side facing the feed solution to meet the NH4+ ions. The comparison of the simulation with experiment shows a satisfactory agreement.

RESUMO

In this paper, we simulate the changes in the structure and transport properties of an anion-exchange membrane (CJMA-7, Hefei Chemjoy Polymer Materials Co. Ltd., China) caused by its modification with a perfluorosulfonated ionomer (PFSI). The modification was made in several stages and included keeping the membrane at a low temperature, applying a PFSI solution on its surface, and, subsequently, drying it at an elevated temperature. We applied the known microheterogeneous model with some new amendments to simulate each stage of the membrane modification. It has been shown that the PFSI film formed on the membrane-substrate does not affect significantly its properties due to the small thickness of the film (≈4 µm) and similar properties of the film and substrate. The main effect is caused by the fact that PFSI material "clogs" the macropores of the CJMA-7 membrane, thereby, blocking the transport of coions through the membrane. In this case, the membrane microporous gel phase, which exhibits a high selectivity to counterions, remains the primary pathway for both counterions and coions. Due to the above modification of the CJMA-7 membrane, the coion (Na+) transport number in the membrane equilibrated with 1 M NaCl solution decreased from 0.11 to 0.03. Thus, the modified membrane became comparable in its transport characteristics with more expensive IEMs available on the market.

RESUMO

The interplay between the ion exchange capacity, water content and concentration dependences of conductivity, diffusion permeability, and counterion transport numbers (counterion permselectivity) of CJMA-3, CJMA-6 and CJMA-7 (Hefei Chemjoy Polymer Materials Co. Ltd., China) anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) is analyzed using the application of the microheterogeneous model to experimental data. The structure-properties relationship for these membranes is examined when they are bathed by NaCl and Na2SO4 solutions. These results are compared with the characteristics of the well-studied homogenous Neosepta AMX (ASTOM Corporation, Japan) and heterogeneous AMH-PES (Mega a.s., Czech Republic) anion-exchange membranes. It is found that the CJMA-6 membrane has the highest counterion permselectivity (chlorides, sulfates) among the CJMAED series membranes, very close to that of the AMX membrane. The CJMA-3 membrane has the transport characteristics close to the AMH-PES membrane. The CJMA-7 membrane has the lowest exchange capacity and the highest volume fraction of the intergel spaces filled with an equilibrium electroneutral solution. These properties predetermine the lowest counterion transport number in CJMA-7 among other investigated AEMs, which nevertheless does not fall below 0.87 even in 1.0 eq L-1 solutions of NaCl or Na2SO4. One of the reasons for the decrease in the permselectivity of CJMAED membranes is the extended macropores, which are localized at the ion-exchange material/reinforcing cloth boundaries. In relatively concentrated solutions, the electric current prefers to pass through these well-conductive but nonselective macropores rather than the highly selective but low-conductive elements of the gel phase. It is shown that the counterion permselectivity of the CJMA-7 membrane can be significantly improved by coating its surface with a dense homogeneous ion-exchange film.

RESUMO

In spite of wide variety of commercial ion-exchange membranes, their characteristics, in particular, electrical conductivity and counterion permselectivity, are unsatisfactory for some applications, such as electrolyte solution concentration. This study is aimed at obtaining an anion-exchange membrane (AEM) of high performance in concentrated solutions. An AEM is prepared with a polypyrrole (PPy)-based modification of a heterogeneous AEM with quaternary ammonium functional groups. Concentration dependences of the conductivity, diffusion permeability and Cl− transport number in NaCl solutions are measured and simulated using a new version of the microheterogeneous model. The model describes changes in membrane swelling with increasing concentration and the effect of these changes on the transport characteristics. It is assumed that PPy occupies macro- and mesopores of the host membrane where it replaces non-selective electroneutral solution. Increasing conductivity and selectivity are explained by the presence of positively charged PPy groups. It is found that the conductivity of a freshly prepared membrane reaches 20 mS/cm and the chloride transport number > 0.99 in 4 M NaCl. A choice of input parameters allows quantitative agreement between the experimental and simulation results. However, PPy has shown itself to be an unstable material. This article discusses what parameters a membrane can have to show such exceptional characteristics.

RESUMO

For the first time, based on the joint application of the fine-porous and cell models, a theoretical analysis of the changing transport and structural characteristics of heterogeneous polymeric ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) MK-40, MA-40, and MA-41 after exposure to elevated temperatures in water and aggressive media (H2SO4 and NaOH solutions), as well as after long-term processing in electrodialyzers of various types, was carried out. The studied membranes are composites of ion-exchange polymers with polyethylene and nylon reinforcing mesh. The external influences provoke the aging of IEMs and the deterioration of their characteristics. The transport properties of IEMs are quantitatively described using five physicochemical parameters: counterion diffusion and equilibrium distribution coefficients in the membrane, characteristic exchange capacity, which depends on the microporosity of ion-exchanger particles, and macroscopic porosity at a known exchange capacity of IEMs. Calculations of the physicochemical parameters of the membranes were performed according to a specially developed fitting technique using the experimental concentration dependences of integral diffusion permeability and specific electrical conductivity, and their model analogs. This made it possible to identify and evaluate changes in the membrane micro- and macrostructure and examine the process of artificial aging of the IEM polymer material due to the abovementioned external impacts.

RESUMO

The possibility of using various types of ion-exchange membranes in diffusion dialysis for the separation of sulfuric acid and nickel sulfate has been evaluated. The process of the dialysis separation of a real waste solution from an electroplating facility containing 252.3 g/L of sulfuric acid, 20.9 g/L of nickel ions and small amounts of zinc, iron, copper ions, etc. has been studied. Heterogeneous cation-exchange membrane containing sulfonic groups and heterogeneous anion-exchange membranes with different thicknesses (from 145 µm to 550 µm) and types of fixed groups (four samples with quaternary ammonium base and one sample with secondary and tertiary amines) have been used. The diffusion fluxes of sulfuric acid, nickel sulfate, and the total and osmotic fluxes of the solvent have been determined. The use of a cation-exchange membrane does not allow the separation of the components, since the fluxes of both components are low and comparable in magnitude. The use of anion-exchange membranes makes it possible to efficiently separate sulfuric acid and nickel sulfate. Anion-exchange membranes with quaternary ammonium groups are more effective in the diffusion dialysis process, while the thin membrane turns out to be the most effective.

RESUMO

The present work discusses the influence of the thickness of MF-4SK perfluorinated sulfonic cation-exchange membranes on their electrotransport properties in hydrochloric acid solutions. It is found that diffusion permeability and conductivity are primarily determined with the specific water content of the membranes and increase with their increase. Analysis of the contribution of reverse diffusion through the membrane to the value of the limiting current shows that it can reach 20% for membranes with a thickness of 60 µm. A study of the characteristics of the fuel cell with perfluorinated membranes of different thicknesses shows that the membrane thickness affects both the ohmic resistance of the membrane-electrode assembly and the diffusion limitations of proton transport in polymer electrolytes.

RESUMO

A bilayer membrane based on a heterogenous cation exchange membrane with a homogeneous cation exchange layer and a polyaniline on its surface is prepared. The intercalation of polyaniline into the membrane with a homogeneous cation exchange layer is performed by oxidative polymerization of aniline. The influence of the homogeneous cation exchange layer and the polyaniline on the structure, conductivity, diffusion permeability, selectivity, and current-voltage curve of the heterogeneous cation exchange membrane is established. Membrane properties are studied in the HCl, NaCl, and CaCl2 solutions. The homogeneous cation exchange layer has a negligible effect on the transport properties of the initial heterogeneous membrane. The polyaniline synthesis leads to a decrease in the macropore volume in the membrane structure, conductivity, and diffusion permeability. The counterion transport number in the bilayer membrane is significantly reduced in a solution of calcium chloride and practically does not change in sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid. In addition, the asymmetry of the diffusion permeability and shape of current-voltage curve depending on the orientation of the membrane surface to the flux of electrolyte or counterion are found.

RESUMO

The microheterogeneous model makes it possible to describe the main transport properties of ion-exchange membranes using a single set of input parameters. This paper describes an adaptation of the microheterogeneous model for describing the electrical conductivity and diffusion permeability of a track-etched membrane (TEM). Usually, the transport parameters of TEMs are evaluated assuming that ion transfer occurs through the solution filling the membrane pores, which are cylindrical and oriented normally to the membrane surface. The version of the microheterogeneous model developed in this paper takes into account the presence of a loose layer, which forms as an intermediate layer between the pore solution and the membrane bulk material during track etching. It is assumed that this layer can be considered as a "gel phase" in the framework of the microheterogeneous model due to the fixed hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, which imparts ion exchange properties to the loose layer. The qualitative and quantitative agreement between the calculated and experimental concentration dependencies of the conductivity and diffusion permeability is discussed. The role of the model input parameters is described in relation to the structural features of the membrane. In particular, the inclination of the pores relative to the surface and their narrowing in the middle part of the membrane can be important for their properties.

RESUMO

A correlation between changes in structural and electrotransport properties of membranes after modification by silica and zirconium hydrophosphate was established. The total water volume, volume fraction of the free water in the membrane and the volume fraction of the water having high binding energy were considered as structural characteristics, which were found from the curves of water distribution on the water binding energy and the effective pore radii. The conductivity, diffusion and electroosmotic permeabilities were investigated as electrotransport properties. The influence of the modifier type on the current flow paths in the membrane was analyzed within the framework of the extended three-wire model. It has been established that the treatment of membranes with alcohol before the intercalation of a modifier leads to the appearance of cavities with an effective size of more than 100 nm filled with free water with the binding energy less than 10 J/mol. It is accompanied with an increase in the diffusion permeability of hybrid membranes by approximately 3-6 times in NaCl and HCl solutions, which limits the application of such materials in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The different conditions of modification of perfluorinated membranes with similar properties by the dopant with same type allow for the preparation of the hybrid materials for various applications such as electrodialysis concentration or electric current generation devices.

RESUMO

Profiled ion-exchange membranes are promising for improving the parameters of reverse electrodialysis due to the reduction of pumping power and electrical resistance. The smooth commercial heterogeneous cation-exchange MK-40 and anion-exchange MA-41 membranes were chosen as the initial membranes. Profiled membranes with three different types of surface profiles were obtained by hot pressing the initial membranes. The bilayer membranes were made on the basis of single-layer profiled membranes by casting MF-4SK film on the profiled surfaces. The diffusion permeability of all types of single-layer and bilayer profiled membranes was higher than of the initial ones due to the appearance of large defects on their surface during pressing. The conductivity of the profiled membrane was lower in the diluted solution and higher in the concentrated solution than of the initial one for all samples except for the bilayer anion-exchange membrane. The conductivity of that sample was lower than that of the initial anion-exchange MA-41 membrane over the entire range of studied concentrations. The counter-ion transport numbers for all studied membranes were calculated based on the concentration dependences of conductivity and diffusion permeability of the membrane by the microheterogeneous model. The selectivity of single layer and bilayer profiled membranes became lower after their profiling due to the increase of the solution phases of membranes. The asymmetry of the current-voltage curves for all single-layer and bilayer profiled membranes was found. The application of the single layer and bilayer profiled membranes in reverse electrodialysis did not lead to an increase in power density.

RESUMO

The influence of the nature of amine solutions on the frequency spectrum of the electrochemical impedance of the bipolar membrane aMB-2m is investigated. Moreover, the effect of the circulation rate of solutions in the electrodialyzer chambers on the volt-ampere characteristics of the Ralex AMH and MA-40L anion-exchange membranes and the aMB-2m bipolar membrane has been investigated. The diffusion characteristics of various types of anion-exchange membranes in a system containing dimethylammonium sulfate ((DEA)2H2SO4), as well as the diffusion characteristics of the Ralex AMH membrane in systems with methylammonium sulfate, dimethylammonium sulfate, diethylammonium sulfate, and ethylenediammonium sulfate ((MA)2H2SO4, (DMA)2H2SO4, (DEA)2H2SO4, EDAH2SO4) have been studied. It is shown that diffusion permeability depends on the structure and composition of anion-exchange membranes, as well as on the nature of amines. The technical and economic characteristics of the electromembrane processes for the production of amines and sulfuric acid from amine salts are determined. It is shown that when using Ralex AMH anion-exchange membranes in an electrodialyzer together with bipolar aMB-2m membranes, higher concentrations of diethylamine and sulfuric acid are achieved, compared with the use of MA-40L anion-exchange membranes.

RESUMO

The physicochemical and transport properties (ion-exchange capacity, water content, diffusion permeability, conductivity, and current-voltage characteristic) of a series of perfluorinated membranes with an inert fluoropolymer content from 0 to 40%, obtained by polymer solution casting, were studied. Based on the analysis of the parameters of the extended three-wire model, the effect of an inert component on the path of electric current flow in the membrane and its selectivity were estimated. The mechanical characteristics of the membranes, such as Young's modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, and relative elongation, were determined from the dynamometric curves. The optimal amount of the inert polymer in the perfluorinated membrane was found to be 20%, which does not significantly affect its structure and electrotransport properties but increases the elasticity of the obtained samples. Therefore, the perfluorinated membrane with 20% of inert fluoropolymer is promising for its application in redox flow batteries and direct methanol fuel cells.

RESUMO

A novel method has been proposed for rapid determination of principal transmembrane transport parameters for solute electroactive co-ions/molecules, in relation to the crossover problem in power sources. It is based on direct measurements of current for the electrode, separated from solution by an ion-exchange membrane, under voltammetric and chronoamperometric regimes. An electroactive reagent is initially distributed within the membrane/solution space under equilibrium. Then, potential change induces its transformation into the product at the electrode under the diffusion-limited regime. For the chronoamperometric experiment, the electrode potential steps backward after the current stabilization, thus inducing an opposite redox transformation. Novel analytical solutions for nonstationary concentrations and current have been derived for such two-stage regime. The comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental data for the Br2/Br- redox couple (where only Br- is initially present) has provided the diffusion coefficients of the Br- and Br2 species inside the membrane, D(Br-) = (2.98 ± 0.27) 10-6 cm2/s and D(Br2) = (1.10 ± 0.07) 10-6 cm2/s, and the distribution coefficient of the Br- species at the membrane/solution boundary, K(Br-) = 0.190 ± 0.005, for various HBr additions (0.125-0.75 M) to aqueous 2 M H2SO4 solution. This possibility to determine transport characteristics of two electroactive species, the initial solute component and its redox product, within a single experiment, represents a unique feature of this study.

RESUMO

The paper shows the possibility of using a microheterogeneous model to estimate the transport numbers of counterions through ion-exchange membranes. It is possible to calculate the open-circuit potential and power density of the reverse electrodialyzer using the data obtained. Eight samples of heterogeneous ion-exchange membranes were studied, two samples for each of the following types of membranes: Ralex CM, Ralex AMH, MK-40, and MA-41. Samples in each pair differed in the year of production and storage conditions. In the work, these samples were named "batch 1" and "batch 2". According to the microheterogeneous model, to calculate the transport numbers of counterions, it is necessary to use the concentration dependence of the electrical conductivity and diffusion permeability. The electrolyte used was a sodium chloride solution with a concentration range corresponding to the conditional composition of river water and the salinity of the Black Sea. During the research, it was found that samples of Ralex membranes of different batches have similar characteristics over the entire range of investigated concentrations. The calculated values of the transfer numbers for membranes of different batches differ insignificantly: ±0.01 for Ralex AMH in 1 M NaCl. For MK-40 and MA-41 membranes, a significant scatter of characteristics was found, especially in concentrated solutions. As a result, in 1 M NaCl, the transport numbers differ by ±0.05 for MK-40 and ±0.1 for MA-41. The value of the open circuit potential for the Ralex membrane pair showed that the experimental values of the potential are slightly lower than the theoretical ones. At the same time, the maximum calculated power density is higher than the experimental values. The maximum power density achieved in the experiment on reverse electrodialysis was 0.22 W/m2, which is in good agreement with the known literature data for heterogeneous membranes. The discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical data may be the difference in the characteristics of the membranes used in the reverse electrodialysis process from the tested samples and does not consider the shadow effect of the spacer in the channels of the electrodialyzer.

RESUMO

Recently developed and produced by Hefei Chemjoy Polymer Material Co. Ltd., homogeneous CJMC-3 and CJMC-5 cation-exchange membranes (CJMCED) are characterized. The membrane conductivity in NaCl, Na2SO4, and CaCl2 solutions, permeability in respect to the NaCl and CaCl2 diffusion, transport numbers, current-voltage curves (CVC), and the difference in the pH (DpH) of the NaCl solution at the desalination compartment output and input are examined for these membranes in comparison with a well-studied commercial Neosepta CMX cation-exchange membrane produced by Astom Corporation, Japan. It is found that the conductivity, CVC (at relatively low voltages), and water splitting rate (characterized by DpH) for both CJMCED membranes are rather close to these characteristics for the CMX membrane. However, the diffusion permeability of the CJMCED membranes is significantly higher than that of the CMX membrane. This is due to the essentially more porous structure of the CJMCED membranes; the latter reduces the counterion permselectivity of these membranes, while allowing much easier transport of large ions, such as anthocyanins present in natural dyes of fruit and berry juices. The new membranes are promising for use in electrodialysis demineralization of brackish water and natural food solutions.

RESUMO

Ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) find more and more applications; the success of an application depends on the properties of the membranes selected for its realization. For the first time, the results of a comprehensive characterization of the transport properties of IEMs from three manufactures (Astom, Japan; Shchekinoazot, Russia; and Fujifilm, The Netherlands) are reported. Our own and literature data are presented and analyzed using the microheterogeneous model. Homogeneous Neosepta AMX and CMX (Astom), heterogeneous MA-41 and MK-40 (Shchekinoazot), and AEM Type-I, AEM Type-II, AEM Type-X, as well as CEM Type-I, CEM Type-II, and CEM Type-X produced by the electrospinning method (Fujifim) were studied. The concentration dependencies of the conductivity, diffusion permeability, as well as the real and apparent ion transport numbers in these membranes were measured. The counterion transport number characterizing the membrane permselectivity increases in the following order: CEM Type-I ≅ MA-41 < AEM Type-I < MK-40 < CMX ≅ CEM Type-II ≅ CEM Type-X ≅ AEM Type-II < AMX < AEM Type-X. It is shown that the properties of the AEM Type-I and CEM Type-I membranes are close to those of the heterogeneous MA-41 and MK-40 membranes, while the properties of Fujifilm Type-II and Type-X membranes are close to those of the homogeneous AMX and CMX membranes. This difference is related to the fact that the Type-I membranes have a relatively high parameter f2, the volume fraction of the electroneutral solution filling the intergel spaces. This high value is apparently due to the open-ended pores, formed by the reinforcing fabric filaments of the Type-I membranes, which protrude above the surface of these membranes.

RESUMO

The concentration dependencies of diffusion permeability of homogeneous (AMX-Sb and AX) and heterogeneous (MA-41 and FTAM-EDI) anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) is obtained in solutions of ampholytes (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3; monosodium phosphate, NaH2PO4; and potassium hydrogen tartrate, KHT) and a strong electrolyte (sodium chloride, NaCl). It is established that the diffusion permeability of AEMs increases with dilution of the ampholyte solutions, while it decreases in the case of the strong electrolyte solution. The factors causing the unusual form of concentration dependencies of AEMs in the ampholyte solutions are considered: (1) the enrichment of the internal AEM solution with multiply charged counterions and (2) the increase in the pore size of AEMs with dilution of the external solution. The enrichment of the internal solution of AEMs with multiply charged counterions is caused by the Donnan exclusion of protons, which are the products of protolysis reactions. The increase in the pore size is conditioned by the stretching of the elastic polymer matrix due to the penetration of strongly hydrated anions of carbonic, phosphoric, and tartaric acids into the AEMs.

RESUMO

Three types of bi-layer hybrid nanocomposites on the base of perfluorinated cation-exchange membrane MF-4SC (Russian analogue of Nafion®-117) were synthesized and characterized. It was found that two membranes possess the noticeable asymmetry of the current⁻voltage curve (CVC) under changing their orientation towards the applied electric field, despite the absence of asymmetry of diffusion permeability. These phenomena were explained in the frame of the "fine-porous model" expanded for bi-layer membranes. A special procedure to calculate the real values of the diffusion layers thickness and the limiting current density was proposed. Due to asymmetry effects of the current voltage curves of bi-layer hybrid membranes on the base of MF-4SC, halloysite nanotubes and platinum nanoparticles, it is prospective to assemble membrane switches (membrane relays or diodes) with predictable transport properties, founded upon the theory developed here.
