RESUMO
Traditional metallic glasses (MGs), based on one or two principal elements, are notoriously known for their lack of tensile ductility at room temperature. Here, we developed a multiprincipal element MG (MPEMG), which exhibits a gigapascal yield strength, significant strain hardening that almost doubles its yield strength, and 2% uniform tensile ductility at room temperature. These remarkable properties stem from the heterogeneous amorphous structure of our MPEMG, which is composed of atoms with significant size mismatch but similar atomic fractions. In sharp contrast to traditional MGs, shear banding in our glass triggers local elemental segregation and subsequent ordering, which transforms shear softening to hardening, hence resulting in shear-band self-halting and extensive plastic flows. Our findings reveal a promising pathway to design stronger, more ductile glasses that can be applied in a wide range of technological fields.
RESUMO
Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) exhibit outstanding strength attributed to the complex dislocation dynamics as compared to conventional alloys. Here, we develop an atomic-lattice-distortion-dependent discrete dislocation dynamics framework consisted of random field theory and phenomenological dislocation model to investigate the fundamental deformation mechanism underlying massive dislocation motions in body-centered cubic MPEA. Amazingly, the turbulence of dislocation speed is identified in light of strong heterogeneous lattice strain field caused by short-range ordering. Importantly, the vortex from dislocation flow turbulence not only acts as an effective source to initiate dislocation multiplication but also induces the strong local pinning trap to block dislocation movement, thus breaking the strength-ductility trade-off.
RESUMO
Nanostructured metals with conventional grain boundaries or interfaces exhibit high strength yet usually poor ductility. Here we report an interface engineering strategy that breaks the strength-ductility dilemma via externally incorporating graphene oxide at lamella boundaries of aluminum (Al) nanolaminates. By forming the binary intergranular films where graphene oxide was sandwiched between two amorphous alumina layers, the Al-based composite nanolaminates achieved ultrahigh compressive strength (over 1 GPa) while retaining excellent plastic deformability. Complementing experimental results with molecular dynamics simulation efforts, the ultrahigh strength was interpreted by the strong blocking effect of the binary intergranular films on dislocation nucleation and propagation, and the excellent plasticity was found to originate from the stress/strain-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transition of graphene oxide and the synergistic deformation between Al nanolamellas and the binary intergranular films.
RESUMO
AgCuSe-based materials have attracted great attentions recently in thermoelectric (TE) field due to their extremely high electron mobility, ultralow lattice thermal conductivity, and abnormal "brittle-ductile" transition at room temperature. However, although the investigation on the crystal structure of AgCuSe low-temperature phase (named as ß-AgCuSe) was started more than half a century before, it is still in controversy yet, which greatly limits the understanding of its intriguing electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance. In this work, via adopting the advanced three-dimensional electron diffraction technique, this study finds that the AgCuSe-based materials crystalize in an incommensurately modulated structure with an orthorhombic Pmmn(0ß1/2)s00 superspace group. The local lattice distortion in the incommensurately modulated structure has weak effects on the conduction band minimum due to the delocalized and isotropic feature of Ag 5s states, leading to high carrier mobility. Likewise, the inhomogeneous, weak, and anisotropic Ag-Se bonds result in the high degree of anharmonicity and ultralow lattice thermal conductivity. Furthermore, alloying S in AgCuSe reinforces the interaction between the adjacent Ag-Se layers, yielding the "brittle-ductile" transition at room temperature. This work well interprets the structure-performance relationship of AgCuSe-based materials and sheds light on the future investigation of this class of promising TE materials.
RESUMO
The processing-structure-property relationship using poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is explored. Specifically, both pre-extension and preshear of amorphous PLA and PET above their glass transition temperatures Tg , carried out in the affine deformation limit, can induce a specific type of cold crystallization during annealing, i.e., nanoconfined crystallization (NCC) where crystal sizes are limited to a nanoscopic scale in all dimensions so as to render the processed PLA and PET optically transparent. The new polymer structure after premelt deformation can show considerably enhanced mechanical properties. For example, premelt stretching produces geometric condensation of the chain network. This structural alternation can profoundly change the mechanical characteristics, e.g., turning brittle PLA ductile. In contrast, after preshear of amorphous PLA above Tg , the NCC containing PLA remains brittle, showing the importance to have geometric condensation from processing. Both AFM imaging and SAXS measurements are performed to verify that premelt deformation of PLA and PET indeed results in NCC from annealing that permits the strain-induced cold crystallization to take place on the length scale of the mesh size of the deformed chain network.

Understanding the fatigue behaviour of hybrid fibre-reinforced plastics is desirable for exploiting their features in safe, durable and reliable industrial components. The fatigue performance of hybrid composites has not been extensively investigated yet. The paper presents an overview of the available knowledge on the fatigue of hybrid fibre-reinforced plastics, and, more specifically, reports the fatigue behaviour of a quasi-isotropic pseudo-ductile all-carbon fibre interlayer hybrid composite by experimental measurements and observations, with emphasis on the damage development. The fatigue conditions are tension-tension stress- and strain-controlled cyclic loading. The results include fatigue life for different maximum stress and strain levels, stiffness evolution and damage observations by X-ray micro-computed tomography. The studied hybrid all-carbon fibre quasi-isotropic composite exhibits pseudo-ductility in quasi-static testing. For stress-controlled fatigue, the fatigue load over the limit of elastic response is not sustained. Contrary to that, the composite retains its load-carrying ability in the pseudo-ductile regime for a strain-controlled regime, albeit with lowered stiffness. This article is part of the theme issue 'Ageing and durability of composite materials'.
RESUMO
Traditionally, precipitates in a material are thought to serve as obstacles to dislocation glide and cause hardening of the material. This conventional wisdom, however, fails to explain recent discoveries of ultrahigh-strength and large-ductility materials with a high density of nanoscale precipitates, as obstacles to dislocation glide often lead to high stress concentration and even microcracks, a cause of progressive strain localization and the origin of the strength-ductility conflict. Here we reveal that nanoprecipitates provide a unique type of sustainable dislocation sources at sufficiently high stress, and that a dense dispersion of nanoprecipitates simultaneously serve as dislocation sources and obstacles, leading to a sustainable and self-hardening deformation mechanism for enhanced ductility and high strength. The condition to achieve sustainable dislocation nucleation from a nanoprecipitate is governed by the lattice mismatch between the precipitate and matrix, with stress comparable to the recently reported high strength in metals with large amount of nanoscale precipitates. It is also shown that the combination of Orowan's precipitate hardening model and our critical condition for dislocation nucleation at a nanoprecipitate immediately provides a criterion to select precipitate size and spacing in material design. The findings reported here thus may help establish a foundation for strength-ductility optimization through densely dispersed nanoprecipitates in multiple-element alloy systems.
RESUMO
In this study, tensile and creep deformation of a high-entropy alloy processed by selective laser melting (SLM) has been investigated; hot ductility drop was identified at first, and the loss of ductility at elevated temperature was associated with intergranular fracture. By modifying the grain boundary morphology from straight to serration, the hot ductility drop issue has been resolved successfully. The serrated grain boundary could be achieved by reducing the cooling rate of solution heat treatment, which allowed the coarsening of L12 structured γ' precipitates to interfere with mobile grain boundaries, resulting in undulation of the grain boundary morphology. Tensile and creep tests at 650°C were conducted, and serrated grain boundary could render a significant increase in tensile fracture strain and creep rupture life by a factor of 3.5 and 400, respectively. Detailed microstructure analysis has indicated that serrated grain boundary could distribute strains more evenly than that of straight morphology. The underlying mechanism of deformation with grain boundary serration was further demonstrated by molecular dynamic simulation, which has indicated that serrated grain boundaries could reduce local strain concentration and provide resistance against intergranular cracking. This is the first study to tackle the hot ductility drop issue in a high-entropy alloy fabricated by SLM; it can provide a guideline to develop future high-entropy alloys and design post heat treatment for elevated temperature applications.

Cermet is an important composite composed of ceramics and metals, which has widespread engineering applications but is notoriously known for its poor ductility. This work synthesizes freestanding cermet nanosheets through the reaction of high entropy alloy nanocrystals with the molecular structure of poly-vinyl alcohol, which results in a unique nanostructure consisting of metallic nanocrystals surrounded by complex amorphous ceramics. Atomic force microscopy indentation shows that such a high entropy alloy derived cermet is strong and tough at ambient temperature with a superb strength (â¼3.2 GPa) and excellent ductility (â¼50%), therefore overcoming the long-standing issue of brittleness facing conventional cermets.
RESUMO
Plant fibers (PFs), such as hemp, Coir, and straw, are abundant in resources, low in price, light weight, biodegradable, have good adhesion to the matrix, and have a broad prospect as reinforcements. However, the degradation of PFs in the alkaline matrix is one of the main factors that affects the durability of these composites. PFs have good compatibility with cement and the geopolymer matrix. They can induce gel growth of cement-based materials and have a good toughening effect. The water absorption of the hollow structure of the PF can accelerate the degradation of the fiber on the one hand and serve as the inner curing fiber for the continuous hydration of the base material on the other. PF is easily deteriorated in the alkaline matrix, which has a negative effect on composites. The classification and properties of PFs, the bonding mechanism of the interface between PF reinforcements and the matrix, the water absorption of PF, and its compatibility with the matrix were summarized. The degradation of PFs in the alkaline matrix and solution, drying and wetting cycle conditions, and high-temperature conditions were reviewed. Finally, some paths to improve the alkaline degradation of PF reinforcement in the alkaline matrix were proposed.

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) are one of the most promising application-oriented organic photovoltaic technologies due to their excellent operational and mechanical stability. However, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) are mostly lower than 16%, restricting their core competitiveness. Furthermore, the improvement of mechanical durability is rarely paid attention to cutting-edge all-PSCs. This work deploys a low-cost "technical grade" PCBM (incompletely separated but pure mixtures containing ≥90% [70]PCBM or [60]PCBM), into the efficient PM6:PY-IT all-polymer blend, successfully yielding a high-performance ternary device with 16.16% PCE, among the highest PCE values for all-PSCs. Meanwhile, an excellent mechanical property (i.e., crack onset strain = 11.1%) promoted from 9.5% for the ternary system is also demonstrated. The "technical grade" PCBM slightly disrupts the crystallization of polymers, and disperses well into the amorphous polymer regions of the all-PSC blends, thus facilitating charge transport and improving film ductility simultaneously. All these results confirm introducing low-cost "technical grade" PCBM with high electron mobility into all-polymer blends can improve carrier mobility, reduce charge recombination, and optimize morphology of the amorphous polymer regions, thus yielding more efficient and mechanically durable all-PSCs.
RESUMO
Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) has gained attention from the construction industry due to several characteristics such as its lightweight, high tensile strength, design flexibility, corrosion resistance and remarkably long service life. Some structural applications that utilize TRC components include precast panels, structural repairs, waterproofing elements and façades. TRC is produced by incorporating textile fabrics into thin cementitious concrete panels. However, in order to use this strengthening method in construction practice, a design model is required. Investigating the combined effect of conventional steel and textile reinforcement on the ductility behavior of composite TRC/RC one-way slab is vitally important. Therefore, the current study describes the proper methods of calculating the ductility of the composite concrete reinforced by a direct combination of conventional steel and textile reinforcement. Four methods are presented to calculate the ductility of the three considered one-way slab specimens. The three slabs having dimensions 1500 mm × 500 mm × 50 mm were reinforced by steel bars (SRC), by steel with one layer of carbon fabric (SRC + 1T), and by steel with two layers of carbon fabric (SRC + 2T). The three slab specimens were cast by the hand lay-up method, removed from the molds, cured, and then tested in flexure after 28 days using the four-point bending method. The obtained results and calculations revealed the non-reasonability of using the conventional method based on yielding of steel reinforcement as the only criterion in the ductility determination. The results also confirmed the suitability of using the energy-based method over other discussed methods in the calculation of the ductility for the hybrid reinforced members.
RESUMO
At present, the evaluation methods for pharmaceutical properties of Chinese medicinal films have many problems, such as poor objectivity for the indexes and no quantitative and standardized evaluation methods. This study established a new method using three important physical property parameters, i.e., flow index, weight loss rate, and elongation rate, which were closely related to the pharmaceutical properties of films. On this basis, the above parameters were taken as indicators to optimize the film formulation of Trillium tschonoskii total saponins and verify the feasibility and suitability of the established method and parameters in formulation optimization. A self-made flow distance detection device and a viscometer were used to measure and characterize the fluidity, where the flow index refers to the ratio of the flow distance per unit time to the viscosity. The weight loss rate was measured by the 3 M transpore~(TM) surgical tape. The film-forming property was characterized by the weight loss rate of the sample within a certain period of time. An electronic tension machine was employed to measure the elongation rate after drying, which was used to characterize the ductility of the film. The results showed that the established method for the determination of flow index, weight loss rate, and elongation rate was stable and reliable. The optimal film formulation of T. tschonoskii total saponins could be obtained by optimization with those indicators. As demonstrated, the above evaluation indicators(flow index, weight loss rate, and elongation rate) can guide the optimization and design of formulation, and the new evaluation method constructed based on this shows a good application prospect in formulation optimization and formulation quality evaluation of medicinal films.

Ductility, i.e., uniform strain achievable in uniaxial tension, diminishes for materials with very high yield strength. Even for the CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA), which has a simple face-centered cubic (FCC) structure that would bode well for high ductility, the fine grains processed to achieve gigapascal strength exhaust the strain hardening ability such that, after yielding, the uniform tensile strain is as low as â¼2%. Here we purposely deploy, in this MEA, a three-level heterogeneous grain structure (HGS) with grain sizes spanning the nanometer to micrometer range, imparting a high yield strength well in excess of 1 GPa. This heterogeneity results from this alloy's low stacking fault energy, which facilitates corner twins in recrystallization and stores deformation twins and stacking faults during tensile straining. After yielding, the elastoplastic transition through load transfer and strain partitioning among grains of different sizes leads to an upturn of the strain hardening rate, and, upon further tensile straining at room temperature, corner twins evolve into nanograins. This dynamically reinforced HGS leads to a sustainable strain hardening rate, a record-wide hysteresis loop in load-unload-reload stress-strain curve and hence high back stresses, and, consequently, a uniform tensile strain of 22%. As such, this HGS achieves, in a single-phase FCC alloy, a strength-ductility combination that would normally require heterogeneous microstructures such as in dual-phase steels.
RESUMO
When a metallic foil (Li metal or LixAl) with initial Li inventory (LiInv) is used as the anode in lithium-ion batteries, its metallurgical damage state in the presence of organic liquid electrolyte and cycling electrochemical potential is of great interest. While LixAl foil operates at a voltage that eliminates LiBCC dendrite, the state-of-health (SOH) of LixAl anode can still degrade quickly in full-cell cycling. To analyze the causes, we decompose SOH = SOHe × SOHi × LiInv, where SOHe is SOH of electronic percolation within the anode, SOHi is SOH of Li percolation from cathode to the anode interior, and LiInv is the amount of cyclable lithium in a full cell, all normalized such that 1 means perfectly healthy, and 0 means dead. Any of the three (SOHe, SOHi, LiInv) dropping to zero would mean death of the full cell. Considering the poor performance of pure Al foil due to rapid drop in LiInv, we employed a mechanical prelithiation (MP) method to make LiInv >1 initially. The chemomechanical shock from MP creates an ultrananocrystalline LiAl layer with grain size 10-30 nm on top of unreacted Al. We then monitor SOHe evolution of the anode foil by measuring the in-plane electronic conductance in situ. We find that small additions of Mn or Si into Al induce nanoprecipitates Zener pinning, and the resulting denser grain boundary (GB) network before MP significantly reduces foil porosity after MP, delays gross foil fracture, and improves SOHe in subsequent cycling. Microstructural analysis reveals that the refined grain size of foil before MP relieves stress and reduces the chance of forming electronically isolated dead grain cluster due to cracking and invasion of electrolyte and solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). By maintaining good electronic percolation, binder-free LixAlMnSi anode demonstrates an order-of-magnitude more stable SOHe and better electrochemical cycling performance than LixAl anode.

The effect of molybdenum additions on the phases, microstructures, and mechanical properties of pre-alloyed Ti6Al4V was studied through the spark plasma sintering technique. Ti6Al4V-xMo (where x = 0, 2, 4, 6 wt.% of Mo) alloys were developed, and the sintered compacts were characterized in terms of their phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties. The results show that the equiaxed primary alpha and Widmänstatten (alpha + beta) microstructure in pre-alloyed Ti6Al4V is transformed into a duplex and globular model with the increasing content of Mo from 0 to 6%. The changing pattern of the microstructure of the sample strongly influences the properties of the material. The solid solution hardening element such as Mo enhances mechanical properties such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, and hardness compared with the pre-alloyed Ti6Al4V alloy.
RESUMO
Strategies to improve tensile strength and ductility of pulsed electrodeposited nanocrystalline Co-Cu were investigated. Parameters of deposition, which are pulse current density, duty cycle, and pulse-on time were adjusted to produce nanocrystalline Co-Cu deposits with different microstructures and morphologies. The most significant improvement of strength and ductility was observed at nanocrystalline Co-Cu deposited, at a low duty cycle (10%) and a low pulse-on time (0.3 ms), with a high pulse current density (1000 A/m2). Enhancement of ductility of nanocrystalline Co-Cu was also obtained through annealing at 200 °C, while annealing at 300 °C leads to strengthening of materials with reduction of ductility. In the as deposited state, tensile strength and ductility of nanocrystalline Co-Cu is strongly influenced by several factors such as concentration of Cu, grain size, and processing flaws (e.g., crystal growth border, porosity, and internal stresses), which can be controlled by adjusting the parameters of deposition. In addition, the presence of various microstructural features (e.g., spinodal and phase decomposition), as well as recovery processes induced by annealing treatments, also have a significant contribution to the tensile strength and ductility.

Owing to their glassy nature, metallic glasses demonstrate a toughness that is extremely sensitive to the frozen-in configurational state. This sensitivity gives rise to "annealing embrittlement," which is often severe and in many respects limits the technological advancement of these materials. Here, equilibrium configurations (i.e., "inherent states") of a metallic glass are established around the glass transition, and the configurational properties along with the plane-strain fracture toughness are evaluated to associate the intrinsic glass toughness with the inherent state properties and identify the fundamental origin of embrittlement. The established correlations reveal a one-to-one correspondence between toughness and shear modulus continuous over a broad range of inherent states, suggesting that annealing embrittlement is controlled almost solely by an increasing resistance to shear flow. This annealing embrittlement sensitivity is shown to vary substantially between metallic glass compositions, and appears to correlate well with the fragility of the metallic glass.
RESUMO
Poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) is the structural material of the first clinically approved bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS), a promising alternative to permanent metal stents for treatment of coronary heart disease. BVSs are transient implants that support the occluded artery for 6 mo and are completely resorbed in 2 y. Clinical trials of BVSs report restoration of arterial vasomotion and elimination of serious complications such as late stent thrombosis. It is remarkable that a scaffold made from PLLA, known as a brittle polymer, does not fracture when crimped onto a balloon catheter or during deployment in the artery. We used X-ray microdiffraction to discover how PLLA acquired ductile character and found that the crimping process creates localized regions of extreme anisotropy; PLLA chains in the scaffold change orientation from the hoop direction to the radial direction on micrometer-scale distances. This multiplicity of morphologies in the crimped scaffold works in tandem to enable a low-stress response during deployment, which avoids fracture of the PLLA hoops and leaves them with the strength needed to support the artery. Thus, the transformations of the semicrystalline PLLA microstructure during crimping explain the unexpected strength and ductility of the current BVS and point the way to thinner resorbable scaffolds in the future.

A composite concrete column with encased fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) confined concrete cores (EFCCC) is proposed in this paper. The cross-sectional form of the EFCCC column is composed of several orderly arranged FRP confined concrete cores (FCCCs) surrounding a filled core concrete. This novel composite column has several advantages, such as higher compressive capacity, stronger FRP confinement, and ductile response. The compressive experiment is employed to investigate the compressive behavior of the EFCCC column with deferent parameters, such as outside concrete and stirrups. Test results show that the main failure mode of the EFCCC column with and without an outside concrete or stirrups is tensile fracture of the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) tubes. Compared to a reinforced concrete (RC) column, the strength and ductility of the EFCCC column was obviously improved by 20% and 500%, respectively. A finite element model (FEM) based on the Drucker-Prager (D-P) was developed that can accurately predict the axial compression behavior of the composite column with FRP confined concrete core. The predicted results obtained by using this FEM have excellent agreement with the experimental results.
