BACKGROUND: Rising digitalization and individualism in the workplace after the COVID-19 pandemic have increased loneliness and related problems in the working-age population. The potential effects of various forms of loneliness on suicidal ideation may differ depending on employment status. METHOD: This is a cross-sectional study based on a national survey of mental health in the general Korean population. We classified occupations as "employed," "self-employed," or "unemployed." Loneliness was assessed using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, which measures both qualitative and quantitative aspects of loneliness. Suicidal ideation was evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. RESULTS: A total of 1770 participants aged 30-65 years (mean age: 47.7 years) were included. The mean loneliness score was 43.9 (SD = 10.4), and 28% of the participants experienced a high level of loneliness. The prevalence ratio for suicidal ideation in the group with high levels of loneliness was 3.06 (95% CI 2.57, 3.63) compared to the group with low levels of loneliness. In our subgroup analysis, we consistently observed an association between loneliness and suicidal ideation across the employed group; however, the employed was more related with qualitative loneliness, the self-employed and the unemployed were more related with quantitative loneliness. CONCLUSIONS: Loneliness was associated with suicidal ideation. According to employment status, the associations were consistent, but there were interactions between type of loneliness and employment status. These findings suggest that interventions to reduce loneliness and prevent suicidal ideation should be tailored to specific employment groups, focusing on qualitative aspects for employed individuals and quantitative aspects for self-employed and unemployed individuals.

IMPORTANCE: The burden of caring for children with complex medical problems such as major congenital anomalies falls principally on mothers, who in turn suffer a variety of potentially severe economic consequences. As well, health consequences of caregiving often further impact the social and economic prospects of mothers of children with major congenital anomalies (MCMCAs). Evaluating the long-term economic consequences of extensive in-home caregiving among MCMCAs can inform strategies to mitigate these effects. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether MCMCAs face reduced employment and increased need for disability benefits over a 20-year period. DESIGN: A population-based matched cohort study. SETTING: Denmark. PARTICIPANTS: All women who gave birth to a singleton child with a major congenital anomaly in Denmark between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2017 (n = 23,637) and a comparison cohort of mothers matched by maternal age, parity, and infant's year of birth (n = 234,586). EXPOSURES: Liveborn infant with a major congenital anomaly. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary outcome was mothers' employment status, stratified by their child's age. Employment status was categorized as employed, outside the workforce (on temporary leave, holding a flexible job, or pursuing education), or unemployed; the number of weeks in each category was measured over time. The secondary outcome was time to receipt of a disability pension, which in Denmark implies permanent exit from the labor market. We used a negative binomial regression model to estimate the number of weeks in each employment category, stratified by the child's age (i.e., 0-1 year, > 1-6 years, 7-13 years, 14-18 years). A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to compute hazard ratios as a measure of the relative risk of receiving a disability pension. Rate ratios and hazard ratios were adjusted for maternal demographics, pregnancy history, health, and infant's year of birth. RESULTS: During 1-6 years after delivery, MCMCAs were outside the workforce for a median of 50 weeks (IQR, 6-107 weeks), while members of the comparison cohort were outside the workforce for a median of 48 weeks (IQR, 4-98 weeks), corresponding to an adjusted rate ratio [ARR] of 1.05 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.07). During the first year after delivery, MCMCAs were more likely to be employed than mothers in the comparison cohort (ARR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.06-1.10). At all timepoints thereafter, MCMCAs had a lower rate of workforce participation. The rate of being outside the workforce was 5% higher than mothers in the comparison cohort during 1-6 years after delivery (ARR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.04-1.07), 9% higher during 7-13 years after delivery (ARR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.06-1.12), and 12% higher during 14-18 years after delivery (ARR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.07-1.18). Overall, MCMCAs had a 20% increased risk of receiving a disability pension during follow-up than mothers in the matched comparison cohort [incidence rates 3.10 per 1000 person-years (95% CI, 2.89-3.32) vs. 2.34 per 1000 person-years (95% CI, 2.29-2.40), adjusted hazard ratio, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.11-1.29]. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: MCMCAs were less likely to participate in the Danish workforce, less likely to be employed, and more likely to receive disability pensions than mothers of unaffected children. The rate of leaving the workforce intensified as their affected children grew older. The high demands of caregiving among MCMCAs may have long-term employment consequences even in nations with comprehensive and heavily tax-supported childcare systems, such as Denmark.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND) and dementia appears to be higher in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared to high-income economies. Yet few nationally representative studies from Latin American LMICs have investigated life-course socioeconomic factors associated with the susceptibility to these two cognitive conditions. Hence, the present study aimed to examine the associations of early- (education and food insecurity), mid- (employment stability), and late-life (personal income and household per capita income) socioeconomic determinants of CIND and dementia among older adults from Brazil, while simultaneously exploring whether sex plays an effect-modifier role on these associations. METHODS: This population-based study comprised a nationally representative sample of older adults (N = 5,249) aged 60 years and over from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil). We fitted multinomial regressions and estimated odds ratios with the respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: In multivariate analyses, participants with more years of early-life education (0.89, 95% CI [0.81, 0.97]) and mid-life employment stability (0.97, 95% CI [0.96, 0.99]) and higher late-life household per capita income (0.70, 95% CI [0.51, 0.95) were less likely to have dementia. Regarding CIND, more years of mid-life employment stability (0.97, 95% CI [0.96, 0.98]) was the only determinant to confer protection. Notably, secondary sex-based analyses showed the higher the early-life educational attainment, the lower the odds of dementia in women (0.81, 95% CI [0.75, 0.87]) but not in men (1.00, 95% CI [0.86, 1.16]). CONCLUSIONS: These findings may have implications for population health and health policy by advancing our understanding of socioeconomic determinants of CIND and dementia, especially in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Suicide poses a major public health challenge, claiming around 650 lives annually in Norway. There is limited understanding of mental healthcare utilization patterns preceding suicide, particularly relating to socioeconomic status (SES). This study analyzes mental health service use among Norwegian citizens aged 20-64 from 2009 to 2021, emphasizing disparities related to SES. METHODS: This is a population-wide registry-based study. We include mental health consultations with both primary and specialist healthcare services, and investigate patterns of service use regarding educational attainment, employment status and income and compare this to the population in general. All suicides in the period (N = 4731) are included in the study. The aim is to investigate potential discrepancies in service use the year and month preceding suicide, seeking to enhance targeted preventive interventions. RESULTS: Our results show significant variations in healthcare use for mental health problems the last year preceding suicide, according to the components of SES, for both men and women. Those with higher education utilize the mental healthcare services prior to suicide to a higher degree than men and women with high school education or less, whereas employed men and men with high income level have significantly lower mental healthcare usage prior to suicide both the last year and month compared to the non-employed men and men with low-income level. Employed women also had a lower mental healthcare usage, whereas the results regarding income are not significant for women. CONCLUSION: Mental healthcare use prior to suicide varies across the SES components. Notably, the SES groups exhibit heterogeneity, with gendered patterns. Targeted interventions for low consultation rates among employed men, and men with high income and lower education are needed, while women, and men in at-risk groups, such as the non-employed and those with low income, demonstrate higher mental healthcare utilization, warranting comprehensive suicide prevention measures.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a serious public health problem in the United States, but limited evidence is available investigating fatal suicides at work. There is a substantial need to characterize workplace suicides to inform suicide prevention interventions and target high-risk settings. This study aims to examine workplace suicide rates in North Carolina (NC) by worker characteristics, means of suicide used, and industry between 1992 and 2017. METHODS: Fatal workplace suicides were identified from records of the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner system and the NC death certificate. Sex, age, race, ethnicity, class of worker, manner of death, and industry were abstracted. Crude and age-standardized homicide rates were calculated as the number of suicides that occurred at work divided by an estimate of worker-years (w-y). Rate ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated, and trends over calendar time for fatal workplace suicides were examined overall and by industry. RESULTS: 81 suicides over 109,464,430 w-y were observed. Increased rates were observed in workers who were male, self-employed, and 65+ years old. Firearms were the most common means of death (63%) followed by hanging (16%). Gas service station workers experienced the highest fatal occupational suicide rate, 11.5 times (95% CI: 3.62-36.33) the overall fatal workplace suicide rate, followed by Justice, Public Order, and Safety workers at 3.23 times the overall rate (95% CI: 1.31-7.97). CONCLUSION: Our findings identify industries and worker demographics that were vulnerable to workplace suicides. Targeted and tailored mitigation strategies for vulnerable industries and workers are recommended.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID can lead to functional disabilities and decreased well-being and limit the ability to work. No study has yet assessed associations of SARS-CoV-2-infection and Long COVID with specific measures of well-being and functional disabilities among workers by employment status. METHODS: Using data from the U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we assessed the prevalence of functional disabilities and well-being measures among adults of prime working age (25-54 years) by employment status and self-reported COVID-19 and Long COVID history. Within each employment status, we generated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) comparing respondents from each 2022 COVID-19/Long COVID category to respondents in that employment status before the pandemic (2019). RESULTS: In 2022, prevalences of each functional disability except vision and all adverse well-being measures were highest among the 9.2% of respondents reporting a history of Long COVID. For each outcome, prevalences were lowest for workers and highest among those unable to work. 2022 prevalence of cognitive disability (16.4% of employees, 21.4% of the self-employed) and depression (31.2% and 36.4%, respectively) among workers reporting a history of Long COVID were more than double 2019 levels. Increases in cognitive disability and depression were lower but statistically significant among workers not reporting a history of Long COVID. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of functional disabilities and adverse well-being among workers reporting a history of Long COVID have implications for workers and employers. Also concerning are smaller increases among workers not reporting a history of Long COVID, given the large number of affected workers. Mitigating the effects of Long COVID on workers will involve efforts in multiple domains: reducing incidence, increasing healthcare practitioner awareness, improving diagnosis and treatments, and increasing employer awareness of best practices for accommodating workers with Long COVID.

Late emerging adulthood is pivotal for identity exploration and development and is interrelated with life satisfaction. In the development of identity and life satisfaction, it is important to have a stable employment status that supports the foundation of life. However, the interrelationships among identity, life satisfaction, and employment status in late emerging adulthood are unclear. Using a two-wave longitudinal survey, this study examined identity development and whether the relationship between identity and life satisfaction varies by employment status. Participants included 875 Japanese emerging adults (65.5% women, Mage = 24.74, SDage = 0.44). Multivariate analysis of variance showed that identity synthesis decreased for those who lost their jobs or those who changed from being full-time to part-time employment. Additionally, individuals with full-time employment had higher identity synthesis and lower confusion than those with part-time or no employment. Multi-group path analysis indicated that identity synthesis was positively associated with life satisfaction and confusion was negatively associated, and these relationships did not differ by employment status. These findings suggest that identity development in late emerging adulthood varies by employment status and that the association between identity and life satisfaction may not be moderated by employment status. Overall, this study contributes to elucidating the characteristics of identity development along employment status and its relationship to life satisfaction in late emerging adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects people in their most productive years of life. Consequently, MS can substantially affect employment and work-related outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study characterizes productivity loss and employment status of people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) and investigates associated factors. METHODS: We used baseline data collected as part of the Canadian Prospective Cohort Study to Understand Progression in Multiple Sclerosis (CanProCo). Using the Valuation of Lost Productivity questionnaire, we measured MS-related paid work productivity loss for those employed, productivity losses incurred by those unemployed (i.e. lost employment time), and unpaid work productivity losses for all. A set of sociodemographic, disease, and performance-related factors were investigated using a two-part regression model for productivity loss and a multinomial logistic model for employment status. RESULTS: From the cohort of 888 pwMS enrolled at baseline (mostly showing mild to moderate disability), 75% were employed, and of those unemployed, 69% attributed their unemployment to health-related issues. Total productivity loss over a 3-month period averaged 64 and 395 hours for those employed and unemployed, respectively. Some factors that affected productivity loss and employment status included use of disease-modifying therapies, fatigue, and performance indicators such as cognitive processing speed. CONCLUSION: Productivity loss experienced by employed and unemployed pwMS is substantial. Targeting the identified modifiable factors is likely to improve work productivity and permanence of MS patients in the workforce.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of stroke is time-dependent and it challenges patients' social and demographic context for timely consultation and effective access to reperfusion therapies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to relate indicators of social position to cardiovascular risk factors, time of arrival, access to reperfusion therapy, and mortality in the setting of acute stroke. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with a diagnosis of ischaemic stroke in a referral hospital in Bogotá was performed. A simple random sample with a 5% margin of error and 95% confidence interval was selected. Patients were characterised according to educational level, place of origin, marital status, occupation, duration of symptoms before consultation, cardiovascular risk factors, access to reperfusion therapy, and mortality during hospitalisation. RESULTS: 558 patients were included with a slight predominance of women. Diagnosis of diabetes was more common in women and smoking in men (n = 68, 28.4% vs. n = 51, 15.9%; p = 0.0004). Rural origin was associated with higher prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidaemia (hypertension n = 45, 73.8% vs. n = 282, 57.4%; p = 0.007; diabetes n = 20, 33.3% vs. 109, 19.5%; p = 0.02; dyslipidaemia n = 19, 32.7% vs. n = 93, 18.9%; p = 0.02). Mortality was higher in rural patients (n = 8, 14.2% vs. n = 30, 6.1%; p = 0.03). Lower schooling was associated with higher frequency of hypertension and dyslipidaemia (hypertension n = 152, 76.0% vs. n = 94, 46.3%; p ≤ 0.0001; dyslipidaemia n = 56, 28% vs. n = 35, 17.0%; p = 0.009) as well as with late consultation (n = 30, 15% vs. n = 59, 28.7%; p = 0.0011) and lower probability of accessing reperfusion therapy (n = 12, 6% vs. n = 45, 22%; p ≤ 0.0001). Formal employment was associated with a visit to the emergency department in less than 3 h (n = 50, 25.2% vs. n = 58, 18%, p = 0.04 and a higher probability of accessing reperfusion therapy (n = 35, 17.6% vs. n = 33, 10.2%; p = 0.01). Finally, living in a household with a stratum higher than 3 was associated with a consultation before 3 h (n = 77, 25.5% vs. n = 39, 15.6%; p = 0.004) and a higher probability of reperfusion therapy (n = 57, 18.9% vs. n = 13, 5.2%; p ≤ 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Indicators of socio-economic status are related to mortality, consultation time, and access to reperfusion therapy. Mortality and reperfusion therapy are inequitably distributed and, therefore, more attention needs to be directed to the cause of these disparities in order to reduce the access gap in the context of acute stroke in Bogotá.

BACKGROUND: Having a job has been associated with better Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) in cancer survivors. However, the sociodemographic and disease-related profiles characterizing the survivors being employed and those having better HRQOL largely overlap. The present study aims to discern the degree to which employment status is independently associated with cancer survivors' HRQOL or if it mainly reflects the impact of other sociodemographic and cancer-related variables. METHODS: Cross-sectional study on a heterogeneous sample of 772 working-age survivors of adult-onset cancer. An instrument specifically designed to assess HRQOL in cancer survivors and Multivariate Variance Analysis (MANOVA) were used. RESULTS: Survival phase, cancer type, and employment status showed the main effects on cancer survivors' HRQOL. In particular, being employed (vs unemployed) had the greatest positive association with HRQOL, affecting ten of the twelve HRQOL domains considered. Also, interaction effects highlighted the role of age (younger) and marital status (single) as risk factors for a greater negative impact of variables affecting the survivor's HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS: The application of a multivariate methodology sheds new light on two relevant issues for the cancer survivor's HRQOL: (i) the existence of differences between diagnostic groups that are not attributed to other variables such as sex, and (ii) the important and independent role that employment status plays. Comprehensive cancer survivorship care should focus more on high-risk groups and include having a job as an essential aspect to consider and prompt. The fact that the employment status is susceptible to change represents a valuable opportunity to care for the wellbeing of this population.

PURPOSE: To identify the factors associated with employment status among mothers of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire survey on mothers of survivors of childhood cancer to clarify practical factors such as care demands, psychological factors such as motivation to work, and support. After calculating descriptive statistics for all variables, binary logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: Of 171 mothers, 129 (75.4%) were employed. The most common form of employment was non-regular (n = 83; 48.5%), including part-time, dispatched, and fixed-term workers. At the time of the survey, compared with nonworking mothers, working mothers tended to be more motivated to work and have lower scores for "Long-term Uncertainty" on the Parent Experience of Child Illness Scale. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis indicated that employment was related to higher motivation to work, the continuation of employment during treatment, more outpatient visits, and a higher amount of support. CONCLUSION: As employment of CCSs' mothers is associated with psychological factors such as motivation to work and long-term uncertainty, psychological support for CCSs' mothers might promote employment. In addition, because the continuation of employment during treatment affects the employment of mothers after the end of cancer treatment, a leave system that covers the treatment period for childhood cancer needs to be established.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that being employed is associated not only with patients' health but also with the outcome of their treatment for severe mental illness. This study examined what influence employment had on improvements in mental health and functioning among patients with common mental disorders who received brief treatment and how patients' diagnosis, environmental and individual factors moderated the association between being employed and treatment outcome. METHODS: The study used naturalistic data from a cohort of patients in a large mental health franchise in the Netherlands. The data were obtained from electronic registration systems, intake questionnaires and Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM). The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework was used to identify potential subgroups of patients. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the relationship between employment status and treatment outcome and to determine how the relationship differed among ICF subgroups of patients. RESULTS: A strong relationship was found between employment status and the outcome of brief therapy for patients with common mental disorders. After potential confounding variables had been controlled, patients who were employed were 54% more likely to recover compared to unemployed patients. Two significant interactions were identified. Among patients who were 60 years of age or younger, being employed was positively related to recovery, but this relationship disappeared in patients older than 60 years. Second, among patients in all living situations there was a positive effect of being employed on recovery, but this effect did not occur among children (18+) who were living with a single parent. CONCLUSIONS: Being employed was positively associated with treatment outcome among both people with a severe mental illness and those with a common mental disorder (CMD). The main strength of this study was its use of a large dataset from a nationwide franchised company. Attention to work is important not only for people with a severe mental illness, but also for people with a CMD. This means that in addition to re-integration methods that focus on people with a severe mental illness, more interventions are needed for people with a CMD.

BACKGROUND: There is a steadily increasing trend in obesity globally and in Sub-Saharan Africa that disproportionately affects women in most places. This is not different in Uganda, where the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey indicated an increase in obesity among women of reproductive age as measured by the body mass index (BMI). However, studies on the predictors of obesity in women are still limited. Particularly, studies using specific indicators of body fat are scant. This study explored the socio-demographic predictors of obesity as indicated by total body fat percentage among women in the age range of 18 to 69 years old living in Mukono Central Division in Central Uganda. METHODS: A cross sectional study design using quantitative methods was employed. A total of 384 women between 18 and 69 years old from Mukono Central Division in Central Uganda were randomly recruited. A structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data including age, level of education, marital status, childbearing status, household expenditure, household size and employment status. Total body fat percentage, the indicator for obesity was measured using the body composition meter from TANITA. The data was analyzed using multinomial logistic regression analysis using SPSS version 20. RESULTS: 155 women, nearly two fifths (40.4% CI 95% 38.4-42.4) were classified as obese. Age, marital status, childbearing status, and employment status were the factors that were associated with obesity among these women. Employment status was the only variable that remained significantly associated with obesity among the women after adjusting for other factors. Unemployed women were nearly two times more likely to be obese than the employed women (AOR 1.9; 95% CI 1.1-3.1). The prevalence of obesity among the unemployed and employed women was 48.2% and 34.4% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity in women was predicted by employment status. An in-depth study on factors that predispose unemployed women to obesity, will be instrumental in guiding interventions to curb the emerging obesity epidemic in Uganda. In the same vein, strategies to reduce levels of unemployment among women living in urban Uganda are essential for protecting public health from the dimension of reducing obesity levels.

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between parental leave length and maternal depressive symptoms at six- and twelve-months postpartum and whether this relation was influenced by women's attitudes towards leave, whether leave was paid or unpaid, and the reason they returned to work. The sample included 115 working women recruited during pregnancy as part of a larger longitudinal study. Analyses revealed that maternal attitudes toward leave influenced the association between leave length and depressive symptoms. Specifically, longer leaves were associated with increased depressive symptoms for women who missed their previous activities at work. Furthermore, women who missed work and had leave for 16 weeks or more, exhibited higher depressive symptoms at six- and twelve-months. Last, results also indicated that women who returned to work solely for monetary reasons exhibited more depressive symptoms at six-months postpartum than those who returned to work for other reasons. This study is among the first to show that women's attitudes towards parental leave and their individual reasons for returning to work are important factors to consider that may have potential implications for parental leave policies.

BACKGROUND: The regulation of working hours is governed by legal standards in formal employment. While the association between long working hours and various health outcomes has been extensively studied, there is limited evidence regarding Brazil. The objective of this study was to investigate the association among working hours, employment status, and self-rated health (SRH), taking into account differences between men and women in a national representative sample of the working population in Brazil. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a representative sample of 33,713 workers in Brazil to assess self-rated health (SRH). We examined the associations between working hours and employment status, categorizing working hours as standard (40-44 h per week) or long (> 44 h per week), and employment status as formal or informal. Logistic regression models were employed, adjusting for sociodemographic, occupational characteristics, and health behaviors. Probabilities of negative SRH were calculated for men and women in different exposure profiles. Results were stratified by gender, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to the findings. RESULTS: The prevalence of long working hours was higher among informal workers for both men and women. Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) results revealed that informal employment (AORwomen = 1.53; 95% CI: 1.13-2.07 and AORmen = 1.55; 95% CI: 1.22-1.96) and long working hours (AORwomen = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.06-1.43 and AORmen = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.00-1.30) were independently associated with negative SRH. Significant interactions between long working hours and informal employment were observed. Among individuals with the same exposure profile, women who engaged in long working hours had a higher probability of reporting negative SRH compared to men. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study are in line with the literature, as differences between men and women in the likelihood of negative self-rated health were observed. The adverse health effects underscore the importance of implementing intersectoral actions to inform the revision of regulations concerning weekly working hours and the expansion of informal employment in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: The present study examined changes in the working hours of Korean workers from 2010 to 2020 according to employment status and industrial sector. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data from the third (2010), fourth (2014), fifth (2017) and sixth (2020) Korean Working Conditions Surveys, which were conducted by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency. RESULTS: During the past 10 years, workers classified as employees, self-employed, or employers experienced clear declines in average weekly working hours and in the percentages of individuals who worked more than 48 hours per week. During 2020, the largest proportion of employees (52.8%) had 40-hour work weeks, whereas the largest proportions of self-employed individuals (26.8%) and employers (25.1%) had very long work weeks (≥ 60 h/week). Also during 2020, individuals who were self-employed or employers in the sectors of 'Accommodation and food service' had the longest weekly work hours, whereas employees in the sector of 'Transportation' had the longest weekly work hours. All three groups (employees, self-employed, and employers) in all 21 industrial sectors experienced declines in average weekly working hours from 2017 to 2020. CONCLUSION: From 2010 to 2020, employees, self-employed individuals, and employers experienced clear declines in average weekly working hours, and in the percentages of individuals with long weekly working hours. However, there were also differences in the weekly working hours of those who had different employment status and who worked in different industrial sectors. The implementation of the 40-hour work-week and the 52-hour maximum work-week in Korea reduced excessive work hours by individuals who had different employment status and who worked in different industrial sectors, and probably improved worker quality-of-life. We recommend extension of these regulations to workplaces with fewer than 5 employees.

BACKGROUND: Oral health is an essential component of a healthy pregnancy. While most women work full-time while pregnant, research has overlooked the impact of occupational status and job loss on oral health experiences during pregnancy. To examine the impact of employment status and job loss on oral health experiences during pregnancy in the United States. DATA: Data are from eight sites (Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New York State, New York City, and Wisconsin) of the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) for the years 2016-2020 (n = 31,362). Multiple logistic regression is used to assess the relationship between occupational status (including employment status and unwanted job loss) during pregnancy and oral health. FINDINGS: Women who experienced an unwanted job loss in the prenatal period were at elevated risk of not having dental insurance, not receiving a dental cleaning during pregnancy, having an oral health problem, and having unmet dental care needs. CONCLUSION: Experiencing unwanted job loss around the time of pregnancy is an important life event that corresponds to worse oral health experiences. There is a need for greater focus on adverse life events, such as job loss, especially during pregnancy, as a mechanism for oral health issues and challenges with proper access to dental health systems.

This study examines the influence of financial strain on intimate partner violence (physical and psychological) experienced by wives of military personnel in Nigeria. The moderating role of employment status was also sought. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire made up of standardized scales with appropriate psychometric properties. Participants of the cross-sectional survey were purposively sampled and comprised 284 female spouses of military personnel in South-Western Nigerian. Results indicated a significant difference in the level of physical [t(282) = 6.775; p < .05] and psychological violence [t(282) = 8.388; p < .05] reported by participants with high and low financial strain. Employment status did not moderate the influence of financial strain on both dimensions of intimate partner violence (ß1 = 0.027; p > .05; ß2 = 0.052; p > .05) and accounted for an insignificant R2 increase of 0.01% and 0.08%, respectively. The practical implications of findings for intervention and future studies were discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important end point to measure in cancer patients and survivors. This study investigated whether differences in HRQOL exist between cancer patients, cancer survivors, and the general population, in addition to how employment status interplays in this relationship. METHODS: Data were from the 2019 Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination. HRQoL was measured using the HRQoL Instrument with 8 Items (HINT-8) index, which encompasses physical, mental, social, and health-related aspects. All variables were entered simultaneously into the fully adjusted model. Multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between HRQoL in cancer patients and cancer survivors compared to the general population. An interaction analysis was conducted based on current employment status. RESULTS: A total of 3805 cancer patients, 109 cancer survivors, and 3609 individuals of the general population were included in this study. The HRQoL scores of cancer patients (ß: - 0.0221, p-value: 0.0218) were poorer compared to the general population with statistical significance. In contrast, the HRQoL scores of cancer survivors did not show statistically significant differences. The interaction term between cancer status and economic activity status was statistically significant for cancer patients * unemployed (ß: - 0.0557, p-value: 0.0020). CONCLUSION: Cancer patients had lower HRQoL than the general population. Additionally, the interaction analysis reveals that unemployed cancer patients have poorer HRQoL scores than the employed general population. The results reveal that cancer patients are vulnerable to decreases in HRQoL, in particular those who are currently unemployed.

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays, more than 80% of newly diagnosed classical Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) patients can be cured and become long-term survivors due to risk and response-adapted treatment strategies. A well-known side effect is cognitive dysfunction that appears in HL patients after chemotherapy. In the present study, we aimed to measure cognitive dysfunction in our HL patients in this study and to find potential correlations between patient-related factors, the signs and symptoms of their diseases, or therapeutic factors. METHODS: We carried out a computer-assisted assessment (CANTAB) of cognitive dysfunction in 118 patients. We examined the domains of visual memory, attention, working memory, and planning. RESULTS: The median age of 64 females and 54 males at diagnosis was 29 (13-74) and 41 (21-81) years at the completion of CANTAB. Fifty-two percent of all patients showed cognitive impairment. Attention was impaired in 35% of patients, the working memory and planning were impaired in 25%, while visual memory was affected in 22%. All the three functions showed a significant association with inactive employments status. A close correlation was found between visual memory/working memory and planning, higher age at HL diagnosis or the completion of CANTAB test, and disability pensioner status. DISCUSSION: Our investigation suggests that patients with inactive employment status and older age require enhanced attention. Their cognitive function and quality of life can be improved if they return to work or, if it is not possible, they receive a cognitive training.
