Environmental changes and human activities can alter the structure and diversity of aquatic microbial communities. In this work, we analyzed the bacterial community dynamics of an urban stream to understand how these factors affect the composition of river microbial communities. Samples were taken from a stream situated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which flows through residential, peri-urban horticultural, and industrial areas. For sampling, two stations were selected: one influenced by a series of industrial waste treatment plants and horticultural farms (PL), and the other influenced by residential areas (R). Microbial communities were analyzed by sequence analysis of 16S rRNA gene amplicons along an annual cycle. PL samples showed high nutrient content compared with R samples. The diversity and richness of the R site were more affected by seasonality than those of the PL site. At the amplicon sequence variants level, beta diversity analysis showed a differentiation between cool-season (fall and winter) and warm-season (spring and summer) samples, as well as between PL and R sites. This demonstrated that there is spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the composition of the bacterial community, which should be considered if a bioremediation strategy is applied. The taxonomic composition analysis also revealed a differential seasonal cycle of phototrophs and chemoheterotrophs between the sampling sites, as well as different taxa associated with each sampling site. This analysis, combined with a comparative analysis of global rivers, allowed us to determine the genera Arcobacter, Simplicispira, Vogesella, and Sphingomonas as potential bioindicators of anthropogenic disturbance.

In the present study, we sought to determine whether i) a waterfowl signal induces avoidance behaviour of the amphipod Hyalella patagonica, ii) infection by the acanthocephalan Pseudocorynosoma enrietti affects the behaviour of the amphipod, and iii) the parasite interferes with the amphipod response to waterfowl. We evaluated amphipod behaviour experimentally by measuring activity levels, phototaxis, geotaxis, and clinging behaviour. The main findings of this study indicate that uninfected amphipods show avoidance behaviour by reducing their activity in the presence of a predator signal. Secondly, infected amphipods show altered behaviour, such as swimming in bright areas near the water surface, which makes them more visible to predators in nature. Lastly, the presence of predatory cues causes infected amphipods to drop to the bottom, which increases their visibility to predators. The present research allows us to perceive the intricate interplay among predators, parasites, and their intermediate hosts and advance our understanding of these complex ecological dynamics.

In the last few years, several studies have investigated microplastics (MPs) in marine ecosystems, but data monitoring and assessing the occurrence in freshwater environments are still scarce. The present study aims to investigate the occurrence, distribution, and chemical composition of MP pollution in Vesijärvi lake and Pikku Vesijärvi pond close to the city of Lahti (Finland) in winter. Sediment, snow, and ice core samples were collected near the shore of these two aquatic systems. MPs were analysed and identified by a non-destructive method using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) 2D imaging. The mean concentrations of MPs detected in sediment, snow, and ice samples were 395.5 ± 90.7 MPs/kg, 117.1 ± 18.4 MPs/L, and 7.8 ± 1.2 MPs/L, respectively. FTIR results showed the predominant abundance of microplastics, such as polyamides (up to 53.3%), polyethylene and polypropylene (up to 17.1%), and natural fragments such as cellulose (up to 45.8%) and wool (up 18.8%) in the same size range. The potential release of MPs arising from stormwaters and sport and recreational activities was evidenced.

This study evaluates the mortality and immobilization on Daphnia magna after 24-96 h of exposure to microplastic dispersions (PP, PE, PVC, PVC/PE), and to microplastic + surfactant solutions both under fasting and feeding conditions. The tested microplastics were analysed with µFT-IR to determine their chemical composition, purity, and dimensions. The results show that: (i) exposure under fasting conditions produces acceptable results on negative controls no later than 24 h; (ii) the dispersion of microplastics forms homo-agglomerates that are able to affect animals' motility and cause mortality and immobilization; (iii) different types of tested microplastic produce different effects on endpoints (the most toxic is PVC + surfactant); (iv) in all cases, the effects were reduced under feeding conditions (i.e. 4 times reduction of PE toxicity); (v) effects of surfactant on observed toxicity are microplastic-type dependent; (vi) the age of the animal affected the mortality and immobilization responses after exposure under both fasting and feeding conditions.

This study evaluated the geospatial distribution of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) (i.e., Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp.) and the alternative fecal indicator pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) in tropical freshwater environments under different land use patterns. Results show that the occurrence and concentration of microbial fecal indicators were higher for urban than for parkland-dominated areas, consistent with land use weightage. Significant positive correlations with traditional FIB indicate that PMMoV is a suitable indicator of fecal contamination in tropical catchments waters (0.549 ≤ rho ≤ 0.612; P < 0.01). PMMoV exhibited a strong significant correlation with land use weightage (rho = 0.728; P < 0.01) compared to traditional FIB (rho = 0.583; P < 0.01). In addition, chemical tracers were also added to evaluate the potential relationships with microbial fecal indicators. The relationships between diverse variables (e.g., environmental parameters, land use coverage, and chemical tracers) and the occurrence of FIB and PMMoV were evaluated. By using stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR), the empirical experimental models substantiate the impact of land use patterns and anthropogenic activities on microbial water quality, and the output results of the empirical models may be able to predict the sources and transportation of human fecal pollution or sewage contamination. In addition, the high correlation between PMMoV data obtained from quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and viral metagenomics data supports the possibility of using viral metagenomics to relatively quantify specific microbial indicators for monitoring microbial water quality (0.588 ≤ rho ≤ 0.879; P < 0.05).IMPORTANCE The results of this study may support the hypothesis of using PMMoV as an alternative indicator of human fecal contamination in tropical surface waters from the perspective of land use patterns. The predictive result of the occurrence of human fecal indicators with high accuracy may reflect the source and transportation of human fecal pollution, which are directly related to the risk to human health, and thereafter, steps can be taken to mitigate these risks.

The myxozoan endoparasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae causes temperature-driven proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonid fishes. Despite the economic and ecological importance of PKD, information about the distribution of the parasite is still scarce. Here, we report for the first time the occurrence of T. bryosalmonae in wild brown trout Salmo trutta and European grayling Thymallus thymallus populations in Finland. We detected T. bryosalmonae at high prevalence in both brown trout and European grayling from the transboundary Finnish-Russian River Koutajoki system (Rivers Oulankajoki, Kuusinkijoki, Kitkajoki, Maaninkajoki, and Juumajoki) in north-eastern Finland. In southern Finland, T. bryosalmonae was detected in River Siuntionjoki young-of-the-year brown trout collected both in 2015 and 2016 (100% prevalence), while the parasite was not observed in fish from 3 other rivers (Ingarskila, Mustajoki, and Vantaanjoki) flowing to the Gulf of Finland. Our results, together with those from recent studies of Atlantic salmon, indicate that T. bryosalmonae is distributed over much higher latitudes in northern Europe than previously appreciated. We expect that increasing water temperatures will likely cause new PKD outbreaks in these more northerly regions in the future.

Microbial communities, which include prokaryotes and protists, play an important role in aquatic ecosystems and influence ecological processes. To understand these communities, metabarcoding provides a powerful tool to assess their taxonomic composition and track spatio-temporal dynamics in both marine and freshwater environments. While marine ecosystems have been extensively studied, there is a notable research gap in understanding eukaryotic microbial communities in temperate lakes. Our study addresses this gap by investigating the free-living bacteria and small protist communities in Lake Ros (Poland), a dimictic temperate lake. Metabarcoding analysis revealed that both the bacterial and protist communities exhibit distinct seasonal patterns that are not necessarily shaped by dominant taxa. Furthermore, machine learning and statistical methods identified crucial amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) specific to each season. In addition, we identified a distinct community in the anoxic hypolimnion. We have also shown that the key factors shaping the composition of analysed community are temperature, oxygen, and silicon concentration. Understanding these community structures and the underlying factors is important in the context of climate change potentially impacting mixing patterns and leading to prolonged stratification.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) include a broad range of compounds. Their production influences a large number of processes, having direct and secondary effects on different fields, such as climate change, economy and ecology. Although our planet is primarily covered with water (~70% of the globe surface), the information on aquatic VOCs, compared to the data available for the terrestrial environments, is still limited. Regardless of the difficulty in collecting and analysing data, because of their extreme complexity, diversification and important spatial-temporal emission variation, it was demonstrated that aquatic organisms are able to produce a variety of bioactive compounds. This production happens in response to abiotic and biotic stresses, evidencing the fundamental role of these metabolites, both in terms of composition and amount, in providing important ecological information and possible non-invasive tools to monitor different biological systems. The study of these compounds is an important and productive task with possible and interesting impacts in future practical applications in different fields. This review aims to summarize the knowledge on the aquatic VOCs, the recent advances in understanding their diverse roles and ecological impacts, the generally used methodology for their sampling and analysis, and their enormous potential as non-invasive, non-destructive and financeable affordable real-time biomonitoring tool, both in natural habitats and in controlled industrial situations. Finally, the possible future technical applications, highlighting their economic and social potential, such as the possibility to use VOCs as valuable alternative source of chemicals and as biocontrol and bioregulation agents, are emphasized.

Microplastics (MPs) have received widespread attention as an emerging environmental pollutant. They are ubiquitous in the freshwater system, causing a global environmental issue. The current features and perspectives of MPs in the freshwater systems can provide the concerns of their ecological effects, which has not been addressed widely. Therefore, in this study, we reviewed the characteristics of MPs in freshwater environments and discussed their sources and potential impacts. The abundance of MPs in freshwater system ranged from approximately 3-6 orders of magnitude in different regions. There colors were mainly white and transparent, with polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) as the major polymers. The main shape of these MPs was fibers with dominant size of less than 1 mm. Analysis indicated MPs in freshwater system mostly originated from human activities such as sewage discharge in highly contaminated areas, while atmospheric long-distance transport and precipitation deposition played an important role in remote areas. Freshwater MPs pollutants also affected drinking water and aquatic organisms. Because the abundance of MPs in organisms was relatively balanced, the pollution level of biological MP pollution cannot accurately characterize the pollution status in the watershed currently. Future research should focus and strengthen on periodic monitoring to characterize the temporal and spatial changes of MPs, and enhance toxicological research to explore MPs pollution impact on biota and humans.

Infection caused by pathogenic bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a serious challenge to human health. Water environment, including water and surface sediments, is an important repository of ARGs, and the activity of aquatic animal can affect the development of ARG pollution in the water environment. Macrobenthic invertebrates are an important component of aquatic ecosystems, and their effects on ARG development in aquatic environments remain unreported. The distribution of ARGs, including tetA gene, sul2 gene, and kan gene, in Chironomidae larvae is demonstrated in this study for the first time. The ARG distribution was related to sampling points, metal elements, and seasons. Animal models demonstrated that Chironomidae larvae enriched ARGs from water and passed them on to downstream predators in the food chain. Conjugative transfer mediated by resistant plasmids was crucial in the spread of ARG in Chironomidae larvae, and upregulated expression of trfAp gene and trbBp gene was the molecular mechanism. Escherichia in Proteobacteria and Flavobacterium in Bacteroidetes, which are gram-negative bacteria in Chironomidae larvae, are the primary host bacteria of ARGs confirmed via resistance screening and DNA sequencing of V4 region of 16S rRNA gene. Feeding experiments further confirmed that ARGs from Chironomidae larvae can be enriched in the fish gut. Research gaps in food chain between sediments and fish are addressed in this study, and Chironomidae larvae is an important enricher of ARGs in the freshwater environment.

Nowadays, efforts for complementing data concerning microplastics (MPs) in freshwater systems are required as MPs exist in many populated areas. The goal of this study is to investigate the distribution and profiles of riverine MPs along the Arakawa River watershed, which runs through the Tokyo Metropolitan area. The MPs were found in 10 of the 12 sampling sites in the watershed with the mean of 1.8 pieces/m3. Also, the spatial distribution of the MPs displayed the accumulation in the downstream and in the tributary areas with high populations, reflecting the levels of the local anthropogenic activities. In contrast to the heterogeneity of the floating concentrations, polymer type compositions were consistent with the predominance of polyethylene compared with polypropylene and polystyrene. Moreover, the size distributions of the particles were consistent among samples with the predominance of the relatively smaller size fractions. These results suggest that the sources of fragmented plastic debris are likely spread over terrestrial areas and that reducing burden from these land-based MPs is necessary for mitigating MPs pollution in urban aquatic environments.

Cyanobacteria are one of the dominant autotrophs in tropical freshwater communities, yet phages infecting them remain poorly characterized. Here we present the characterization of cyanophage S-SRP02, isolated from a tropical freshwater lake in Singapore, which infects Synechococcus sp. Strain SR-C1 isolated from the same lake. S-SRP02 represents a new evolutionary lineage of cyanophage. Out of 47 open reading frames (ORFs), only 20 ORFs share homology with genes encoding proteins of known function. There is lack of auxiliary metabolic genes which was commonly found as core genes in marine cyanopodoviruses. S-SRP02 also harbors unique structural genes highly divergent from other cultured phages. Phylogenetic analysis and viral proteomic tree further demonstrate the divergence of S-SRP02 from other sequenced phage isolates. Nonetheless, S-SRP02 shares synteny with phage genes of uncultured phages obtained from the Mediterranean Sea deep chlorophyll maximum fosmids, indicating the ecological importance of S-SRP02 and its related viruses. This is further supported by metagenomic mapping of environmental viral metagenomic reads onto the S-SRP02 genome.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants, which are considered ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems. The effects of MPs on aquatic biota are still poorly understood, and consequently, there is a need to understand the impacts that MPs may pose to organisms. In the present study, Tubifex tubifex, a freshwater oligochaete commonly used as a bioindicator of the aquatic environment, was exposed to fluorescent polyethylene microspheres (up to 10 µm in size) to test whether the oxidative stress status was affected. The mortality rate of T. tubifex, as well as the activities of the oxidative stress status biomarker enzymes glutathione reductase and peroxidase, were assessed. In terms of oxidative stress, no significant differences between the exposure organisms and the corresponding controls were detected. Even though the data suggest that polyethylene MPs and the selected concentrations did not pose a critical risk to T. tubifex, the previously reported tolerance of T. tubifex to environmental pollution should be taken into account and thus MPs as aquatic pollutants could still represent a threat to more sensitive oligochetes.

Aquatic viruses have been extensively studied over the past decade, yet fundamental aspects of freshwater virus communities remain poorly described. Our goal was to characterize virus communities captured in the >0.22 µm size-fraction seasonally and spatially in a freshwater harbour. Community DNA was extracted from water samples and sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq platform. Assembled contigs were annotated as belonging to the virus groups (i.e., order or family) Caudovirales, Mimiviridae, Phycodnaviridae, and virophages (Lavidaviridae), or to other groups of undefined viruses. Virophages were often the most abundant group, and discrete virophage taxa were remarkably stable across sites and dates despite fluctuations in Mimiviridae community composition. Diverse Mimiviridae contigs were detected in the samples and the two sites contained distinct Mimiviridae communities, suggesting that Mimiviridae are important algal viruses in this system. Caudovirales and Phycodnaviridae were present at low abundances in most samples. Of the 18 environmental parameters tested, only chlorophyll a explained the variation in the data at the order or family level of classification. Overall, our findings provide insight into freshwater virus community assemblages by expanding the documented diversity of freshwater virus communities, highlighting the potential ecological importance of virophages, and revealing distinct communities over small spatial scales.

The Central Andes region is considered an area of high environmental relevance in South America and it is rich in glaciers, which are the main fresh water sources and reservoirs of the region. The presence of organochlorine compounds (OCs) is an environmental threat due to their persistence and adverse effects on wildlife and humans. The levels of OCs, such as chlordane compounds (CHLs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), were determined in muscle and liver tissues of fish and in sediments collected from different sites of the central Andes: the Mendoza River and the Yaucha River (rainbow trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Carrizal Dam (silverside: Odontesthes bonariensis). Regardless of studied site and fish tissue, the general OC trend was: DDTs > PCBs > HCHs > CHLs > HCB. The results showed clear geographic distribution patterns for DDTs. Among the sampling sites, silverside fish showed the highest average load of DDTs (614 and 867 ng g-1 lw in muscle and liver tissues, respectively). Based on the biota-sediment bioaccumulation factor (BSAF), both rainbow trout and silverside fish showed comparable capability to accumulate p,p'-DDT in their tissues. Intraspecific correlational analysis showed that CB-138 in muscle and p,p'-DDT in liver were clearly correlated with the lipid content in silverside specimens, which highlights the relevance of taking into account the fat content and the type of target tissues.

Legionella pneumophila is one of the most tracked waterborne pathogens and remains an important threat to human health. Despite the use of biocides, L. pneumophila is able to persist in engineered water systems with the help of multispecies biofilms and phagocytic protists. For few years now, high-throughput sequencing methods have enabled a better understanding of microbial communities in freshwater environments. Those unexplored and complex communities compete for nutrients using antagonistic molecules as war weapons. Up to now, few of these molecules were characterized in regards of L. pneumophila sensitivity. In this context, we established, from five freshwater environments, a vast collection of culturable bacteria and investigated their ability to inhibit the growth of L. pneumophila. All bacterial isolates were classified within 4 phyla, namely Proteobacteria (179/273), Bacteroidetes (48/273), Firmicutes (43/273), and Actinobacteria (3/273) according to 16S rRNA coding sequences. Aeromonas, Bacillus, Flavobacterium, and Pseudomonas were the most abundant genera (154/273). Among the 273 isolates, 178 (65.2%) were shown to be active against L. pneumophila including 137 isolates of the four previously cited main genera. Additionally, other less represented genera depicted anti-Legionella activity such as Acinetobacter, Kluyvera, Rahnella, or Sphingobacterium. Furthermore, various inhibition diameters were observed among active isolates, ranging from 0.4 to 9 cm. Such variability suggests the presence of numerous and diverse natural compounds in the microenvironment of L. pneumophila. These molecules include both diffusible secreted compounds and volatile organic compounds, the latter being mainly produced by Pseudomonas strains. Altogether, this work sheds light on unexplored freshwater bacterial communities that could be relevant for the biological control of L. pneumophila in manmade water systems.

Estrogenicity of sewage effluents, and related ecotoxicological effects in effluent-receiving environments, have been widely reported over the last 2 decades. However, relatively little attention has been given to other endocrine pathways that may be similarly disrupted by a growing list of contaminants of concern. Furthermore, the Australian evidence base is limited compared with those of Europe and North America. During a low dilution period in summer, the authors investigated multiple endocrine potencies in Australia's largest inland sewage treatment plant (STP) and the Lower Molonglo/Upper Murrumbidgee effluent-receiving environment. This STP receives 900 L/s of mostly domestic wastewater from a population of 350 000, and contributes a high proportion of total flow in the lower catchment during dry periods. A panel of in vitro receptor-driven transactivation assays were used to detect (anti)estrogenic, (anti) androgenic, (anti)progestagenic, glucocorticoid, and peroxisome-proliferator activity at various stages of the sewage treatment process. Total estrogenic and (anti)androgenic potency was removed after primary and/or secondary treatment; however, total removal efficiency for glucocorticoid potency was poorer (53-66%), and progestagenic potency was found to increase along the treatment train. Estrogenicity was detected in surface waters and bed sediments upstream and downstream of the effluent outfall, at maximum levels 10 times lower than low-hazard thresholds. Glucocorticoid and progestagenic activity were found to persist to 4 km downstream of the effluent outfall, suggesting that future research is needed on these endocrine-disrupting chemical categories in effluent-receiving systems.

Abstract: Testudinella is a taxon of Rotifera broadly distributed in Brazil. In a recent collection in marginal lakes connected to the Paranapanema River (São Paulo, Brazil), we found specimens of Testudinella mucronata and T. patina with concavities on their lorica. The objective of this study was to describe the concavities observed in individuals of both species and discuss their possible causes. Plankton samples were collected at two sampling stations, in the pelagic (PZ) and littoral (LZ) zones of the Panema and Coqueiral lakes; both of these lakes are ultra-oligotrophic and not polluted. For T. mucronata, 4% of individuals with concavities were found in the PZ of Coqueiral lake and 50% in the LZ of Panema lake. In T. patina, the proportion of specimens with concavities corresponded to 34% in the LZ of Panema lake and 17% in PZ of Coqueiral lake. In this study, we discussed that low water temperatures, predation events and/or recent hatching are factors that may justify the concavities in the lorica of specimens of our work.


Resumo: Testudinella é um táxon de Rotifera amplamente distribuído no Brasil. Em recentes coletas em lagos marginais conectados ao rio Paranapanema (São Paulo, Brasil), nós encontramos espécimes de Testudinella mucronata e T. patina com concavidades em suas lóricas. O objetivo do estudo foi descrever as concavidades observadas em indivíduos de ambas as espécies e discutir suas possíveis causas. Amostras de plâncton foram coletadas em duas estações de amostragem, na zona pelágica (PZ) e litorânea (LZ) dos lagos Panema e Coqueiral; ambos os lagos são ultra-oligotróficos e não poluídos. Para T. mucronata, 4% dos indivíduos com concavidades foram encontrados na PZ do lago Coqueiral e 50% na LZ do lago Panema. Em T. patina, a proporção de espécimes com concavidades correspondeu a 34% na LZ do lago Panema e 17% na PZ do lago Coqueiral. Nesse estudo, nós sugerimos que baixas temperaturas da água, eventos de predação e/ou recente eclosão são fatores que podem justificar as concavidades na lórica dos espécimes do nosso trabalho.

Abstract: Oligochaeta assemblages are important components in freshwater environments, where their abundance and composition may indicate aspects related to water quality and sediment. The lack of information about these communities in Brazilian aquatic environments, as well as the application of native species as bioindicators of lotic environmental, stimulated the conception of this paper. Thus, the aim was to study the community of aquatic Oligochaeta in selected stretches of the Juruena River (MT), thereby generating grounds for future environmental monitoring action in lotic ecosystems. For this purpose, samples were analyzed at bimonthly intervals during the period from January to November 2009, in stretches of the Juruena River (Amazon River Basin) located in the State of Mato Grosso (MT). Two methods were used to collect the organisms: a) "D" network in small clusters of fixed macrophytes in the sediment on the river banks; and b) Ekman-Birge dredge in fine sediment. Preliminary results were 584 organisms distributed in 22 taxa. Of these, 22 valid species were identified. This number corresponds to approximately 25% of the aquatic oligochaete species registered in Brazil. Of these species, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Dero nivea and Pristina rosea can be associated with organic enrichment conditions and/or some level of environmental degradation.


Resumo: Comunidades de oligoquetos constituem importante componente em ambientes de água doce, onde sua abundância e composição podem indicar aspectos relacionados à qualidade da água e do sedimento. A carência de informações sobre estas comunidades em ambientes aquáticos brasileiros, bem como a aplicação de espécies nativas como bioindicadores de ambientes lóticos estimularam o desenvolvimento do presente trabalho. Assim, o objetivo foi estudar a comunidade de oligoquetos aquáticos em trechos selecionados do Rio Juruena (MT), gerando subsídios para futuras ações de monitoramento ambiental em ecossistemas lóticos. Métodos: Para isso foram analisadas amostras efetuadas em intervalos bimestrais durante o período de janeiro a novembro 2009, em trechos do Rio Juruena (Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Amazonas) localizado no Estado de Mato Grosso (MT). Para coleta dos organismos foram utilizados dois métodos: a) rede em "D" em pequenos agrupamentos de macrófitas fixas no sedimento nas margens do rio; e b) draga Ekman-Birge em sedimento arenoso. Os resultados preliminares 584 organismos distribuídos em 22 táxons. Dentre estes, foram identificadas 22 espécies válidas. Esse número corresponde aproximadamente 25% das espécies de oligoquetos aquáticos registradas no Brasil. Destas espécies, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Dero nivea e Pristina rosea podem ser associadas à condições de enriquecimento orgânico e/ou algum nível de degradação ambiental.

The aim of the current study was to assess the variability in heterotrophic nanoflagellate abundance attributable to variables responsible for the influence of bottom-up and top-down control mechanisms in the plankton food web along a trophic gradient in subtropical reservoirs (Paraná State, Brazil). In particular, we hypothesised that food resources were the main determinant for the abundance of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) along a trophic gradient. Results showed that HNF communities were weakly influenced by the bottom-up mechanism. Moreover, there was evidence of a slight influence from a top-down control mechanism on this community. Therefore, the results of the present study did not corroborate the hypothesis initially proposed, and further studies are needed to elucidate the complex outcomes of trophic gradients on planktonic HNF communities, including other predictor variables related to abiotic interactions, such as morphometrics, hydrology, priorities uses and climate conditions.


O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a variabilidade da abundância de nanoflagelados heterotróficos (NFH) planctônicos atribuída a variáveis responsáveis pela influencia dos mecanismos de controle bottom-up e top-down na cadeia alimentar planctônica ao longo de um gradiente trófico em reservatórios subtropicais (Estado do Paraná, Brasil). Nós avaliamos a hipótese de que a abundância de NFH aumenta ao longo de um gradiente trófico principalmente devido ao efeito bottom-up. Os resultados mostraram importantes relações presa-predador entre NFH e bactéria e fioplâncton. Entretanto, a ausência de um padrão claro de aumento da abundância de NFH em direção aos reservatórios eutróficos sugere que o controle bottom-up não foi relacionado ao gradiente trófico. Além disso, apesar de significante, um fraco efeito bottom-up e um sinal do mecanismo de controle top-down sugerem que o recurso alimentar não foi o principal fator regulador da dinâmica de NFH nos reservatórios estudados. Assim, os resultados do presente estudo não corroboraram a hipótese inicialmente proposta e futuros estudos são necessários para elucidar a complexidade da influencia de gradientes tróficos em NFH, incluindo outras variáveis preditoras relacionadas às interações abióticas como morfometria, hidrologia, prioridade de uso e condições climáticas.
