Relationships between toxic pollutant emissions during industrial processes and toxic pollutant dietary intakes and adverse health burdens have not yet been quantitatively clarified. Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are typical industrial pollutants that are carcinogenic and of increasing concern. In this study, we established an interpretable machine learning model for quantifying the contributions of industrial emissions and dietary intakes of PCNs to health effects. We used the SHapley Additive exPlanations model to achieve individualized interpretability, enabling us to evaluate the specific contributions of individual feature values towards PCNs concentration levels. A strong relationship between PCN dietary intake and body burden was found using a robust large-scale PCN diet survey database for China containing the results of the analyses of 17,280 dietary samples and 4480 breast milk samples. Industrial emissions and dietary intake contributed 12 % and 52 %, respectively, of the PCN burden in breast milk. The model quantified the contributions of food consumption and industrial emissions to PCN exposure, which will be useful for performing accurate health risk assessments and developing reduction strategies of PCNs.

Accurately predicting the power conversion efficiency (PCE) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) represents a crucial challenge, one that is pivotal for the high throughput rational design and screening of promising dye sensitizers. This study presents precise, predictive, and interpretable machine learning (ML) models specifically designed for Zn-porphyrin-sensitized solar cells. The model leverages theoretically computable, effective, and reusable molecular descriptors (MDs) to address this challenge. The models achieve excellent performance on a "blind test" of 17 newly designed cells, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.02%. Notably, 10 dyes are predicted within a 1% error margin. These results validate the ML models and their importance in exploring uncharted chemical spaces of Zn-porphyrins. SHAP analysis identifies crucial MDs that align well with experimental observations, providing valuable chemical guidelines for the rational design of dyes in DSSCs. These predictive ML models enable efficient in silico screening, significantly reducing analysis time for photovoltaic cells. Promising Zn-porphyrin-based dyes with exceptional PCE are identified, facilitating high-throughput virtual screening. Introduction: Accurately and objectively quantifying the clinical features of Parkinson's disease (PD) is crucial for assisting in diagnosis and guiding the formulation of treatment plans. Therefore, based on the data on multi-site motor features, this study aimed to develop an interpretable machine learning (ML) model for classifying the "OFF" and "ON" status of patients with PD, as well as to explore the motor features that are most associated with changes in clinical symptoms. Methods: We employed a support vector machine with a recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) algorithm to select promising motion features. Subsequently, 12 ML models were constructed based on these features, and we identified the model with the best classification performance. Then, we used the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and the Local Interpretable Model agnostic Explanations (LIME) methods to explain the model and rank the importance of those motor features. Results: A total of 96 patients were finally included in this study. The naive Bayes (NB) model had the highest classification performance (AUC = 0.956; sensitivity = 0.8947, 95% CI 0.6686-0.9870; accuracy = 0.8421, 95% CI 0.6875-0.9398). Based on the NB model, we analyzed the importance of eight motor features toward the classification results using the SHAP algorithm. The Gait: range of motion (RoM) Shank left (L) (degrees) [Mean] might be the most important motor feature for all classification horizons. Conclusion: The symptoms of PD could be objectively quantified. By utilizing suitable motor features to construct ML models, it became possible to intelligently identify whether patients with PD were in the "ON" or "OFF" status. The variations in these motor features were significantly correlated with improvement rates in patients' quality of life. In the future, they might act as objective digital biomarkers to elucidate the changes in symptoms observed in patients with PD and might be used to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with PD.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a public health crisis that also fuels the pervasive social inequity in the United States. Existing studies have extensively analyzed the inequity issues on mobility across different demographic groups during the lockdown phase. However, it is unclear whether the mobility inequity is perennial and will continue into the mobility recovery phase. This study utilizes ride-hailing data from Jan 1st, 2019, to Mar 31st, 2022, in Chicago to analyze the impact of various factors, such as demographic, land use, and transit connectivity, on mobility inequity in the different recovery phases. Instead of commonly used statistical methods, this study leverages advanced time-series clustering and an interpretable machine learning algorithm. The result demonstrates that inequity still exists in the mobility recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the degree of mobility inequity in different recovery phases is varied. Furthermore, mobility inequity is more likely to exist in the census tract with more families without children, lower health insurance coverage, inflexible workstyle, more African Americans, higher poverty rate, fewer commercial land use, and higher Gini index. This study aims to further the understanding of the social inequity issue during the mobility recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and help governments propose proper policies to tackle the unequal impact of the pandemic.
