BACKGROUND: Usual intakes of iodine in United States girls and women, including pregnant and lactating women have not been adequately studied. Adequate intake of iodine is critical for neurodevelopment of girls, thyroid functions, and reproductive health of women. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the adequacy and trends of iodine intake of United States girls and women between 2011 and 2020. METHODS: We mapped the sources of United States girls and women's iodine intake from the 29 food groups between 2011 and 2020 using United States Department of Agriculture's iodine data release 2. The total food intakes from 2 d of dietary recall of the United States National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey and estimated iodine concentrations of the food groups were used to calculate the usual iodine intakes of female participants. Trends of usual intakes, urinary iodine concentrations (UIC), and estimated intake adequacy were calculated. RESULTS: Median usual intakes of iodine estimated from diet and supplements and UIC of United States girls and nonpregnant, nonlactating women declined between 2011 and 2020 in all 3 age groups: ≤14 y, 15-49 y old, and ≥50 y. Median usual intakes of iodine for pregnant and lactating United States women declined as well. Inadequacy levels of usual iodine intake were 9.9% for nonpregnant, nonlactating women of reproductive age 15-49 y old, 40.3% for lactating, and 10.2% for pregnant women in the 2017-2020 period. Intake insufficiencies estimated from UIC were 48.8%, 63.2%, and 31.3% for nonpregnant, nonlactating women of reproductive age 15-49 y old, pregnant and lactating women, respectively, in the 2017-2020 period. A significant decline in milk consumption might be one of the major contributors to the dietary iodine decline in United States women. CONCLUSIONS: Iodine intake of United States girls and women were on the decline between 2011 and 2020 and the increased inadequacy of iodine intake deserves public health attention.

PURPOSE: The Swiss voluntary salt iodisation programme has successfully prevented iodine deficiency for 100 years, but dietary habits are changing and today only one-third of processed foods contain iodised salt. We aimed to monitor the current iodine status in children and pregnant women. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study in children (6-12 years) and pregnant women and measured the urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in spot urine samples. We estimated the iodine intake using UIC and urinary creatinine concentration (UCC) and determined the prevalence of intakes below the average requirement (AR) using the SPADE method. We measured dried blood spot (DBS) thyroglobulin (Tg), TSH and total T4 in pregnant women. RESULTS: The median UIC was 127 µg/L (bootstrapped 95% CI 119, 140, n = 362) in children and 97 µg/L (bootstrapped 95% CI 90, 106, n = 473) in pregnant women. The estimated prevalence of inadequate iodine intake (< 65 µg/day) was 5.4% (bootstrapped 95% CI 0.0, 14.6) in children. Half (47%) of the women consumed iodine-containing multivitamin and mineral supplements (≥ 150 µg/day). Compared to non-users, users had higher median UIC (129 vs. 81 µg/L, P < 0.001), lower prevalence of inadequacy (< 160 µg/day; 0.2 vs. 31%) and lower DBS-Tg (23 vs. 29 µg/L, P < 0.001). All women were euthyroid. CONCLUSIONS: The Swiss diet and current salt fortification provides adequate iodine intake in children, but not in all pregnant women. Iodine supplements cover the dietary gap in pregnancy but are not universally consumed. Therefore, improved use of iodised salt in processed foods is desired to ensure adequate iodine intake in all population groups. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04524013.

Topography of a place has a significant impact on soil characteristics that ultimately influence soil iodine levels. Lower Himalayan region (LHR) in Pakistan has a wide range of climatic and geological variations. Hence, an investigation was conducted to analyze the iodine concentration and other physicochemical properties of soils in two LHR districts, Haripur and Mansehra. Spatial analysis indicated a decrease in iodine levels in the mountainous regions in comparison to the flat portions of LHR. Soil samples obtained from different locations across Haripur had a stronger affinity for iodine due to variations in solubility and adsorption of iodine to soil clay components, which can be attributed to lower pH, higher organic matter, and a higher cation exchange capacity (CEC). In contrast to the plains of Haripur, elevated locations in the Mansehra district had decreased levels of iodine, along with a higher soil pH and reduced soil organic matter. The soil erosion and depletion of soil micronutrients in the hilly region of Mansehra may be attributed to the unfavorable soil conditions and excessive precipitation. Presence of clay, iron (Fe), and aluminum (Al) in the soil led to a rise in iodine levels. Iodine concentrations exhibited an inverse relationship with soil acidity. Study revealed a direct correlation between soil iodine levels and their cation exchange capacity (CEC) and clay content. This study aims to gather fundamental data for the chosen regions of LHR to address illnesses caused by iodine deficiency.

Iodine is a micronutrient required for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth, and neurodevelopment. Iodine deficiency among adolescents and young adults is a major global health issue. We analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 database to calculate the prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) rates of iodine deficiency among adolescents and young adults. We explored the specific year with the most substantial changes in the trends of iodine deficiency among adolescents with annual percentage change (APC) by Joinpoint Regression analysis. Descriptive analyses were conducted to characterize the iodine deficiency burden according to age, sex, location, and sociodemographic index (SDI) quintiles. All measures are listed with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs), and all rates are reported per 100,000 individuals. From 1990 to 2019, the iodine deficiency prevalence rate among adolescents decreased from 3082.43 (95% uncertainty interval [UI], 2473.01-3855.86) to 2190.84 (95% [UI], 1729.18-2776.16) per 100,000 population, with an AAPC of -1.15 (95% confidence interval [CI], -1.29 to -1.02). Regarding the SDI in 2019, the highest prevalence and DALY rates of iodine deficiency were reported in low-SDI countries. In 1990, Southeast Asia had the highest prevalence and DALYs rates for iodine deficiency among adolescents, while in 2019, Africa had the highest prevalence rate (3330.12). CONCLUSION: Globally, the iodine deficiency burden among adolescents has substantially decreased since 1990; however, low-SDI countries still bear a great burden. Implementation measures and monitoring systems should be strengthened to reduce the iodine deficiency burden, especially among adolescents. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Iodine deficiency can cause severe or irreversible developmental disorders, particularly in adolescents and young adults. • Universal Salt Iodization was implemented for ensuring appropriate iodine intake. WHAT IS NEW: • We found substantial declines in the prevalence rates of iodine deficiency among adolescents during the past three decades. Globally, the disability-adjusted life-year rate of iodine deficiency among adolescents decreased from 56.17 in 1990 to 35.38 in 2019. • Iodine deficiency among adolescents in low- sociodemographic index countries still bear a great burden.

Brassica vegetables are widely consumed all over the world, especially in North America, Asia, and Europe. They are a rich source of sulfur compounds, such as glucosinolates (GLSs) and isothiocyanates (ITCs), which provide health benefits but are also suspected of having a goitrogenic effect. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review to assess the impact of dietary interventions on thyroid function, in terms of the potential risk for people with thyroid dysfunctions. We analyzed the results of 123 articles of in vitro, animal, and human studies, describing the impact of brassica plants and extracts on thyroid mass and histology, blood levels of TSH, T3, T4, iodine uptake, and the effect on thyroid cancer cells. We also presented the mechanisms of the goitrogenic potential of GLSs and ITCs, the limitations of the studies included, as well as further research directions. The vast majority of the results cast doubt on previous assumptions claiming that brassica plants have antithyroid effects in humans. Instead, they indicate that including brassica vegetables in the daily diet, particularly when accompanied by adequate iodine intake, poses no adverse effects on thyroid function.

BACKGROUND: The awareness of the importance of following dietary recommendations that meet specific biological requirements related to an individual's health status has significantly increased interest in personalized nutrition. The aim of this research was to test agronomic protocols based on soilless cultivation for providing consumers with new dietary sources of iodine (I), as well as alternative vegetable products to limit dietary potassium (K) intake; proposed cultivation techniques were evaluated according to their suitability to obtain such products without compromising agronomic performance. RESULTS: Two independent experiments, focused on I and K respectively, were conducted in a commercial greenhouse specializing in soilless production. Four different species were cultivated using three distinct concentrations of I (0, 1.5 and 3 mg L-1 ) and K (0, 60 and 120 mg L-1 ). Microgreens grown in I-rich nutrient solution accumulate more I, and the increase is dose-dependent. Compared to unbiofortified microgreens, the treatments with 1.5 and 3 mg L-1 of I resulted in 4.5 and 14 times higher I levels, respectively. Swiss chard has the highest levels of K (14 096 mg kg-1 of FW), followed by rocket, pea and radish. In radish, rocket and Swiss chard, a total reduction of K content in the nutrient solution (0 mg L-1 ) resulted in an average reduction of 45% in K content. CONCLUSION: It is possible to produce I-biofortified microgreens to address I deficiency, and K-reduced microgreens for chronic kidney disease-affected people. Species selection is crucial to customize nutritional profiles according to specific dietary requirements due to substantial mineral content variations across different species. © 2023 The Authors. RESUMO

Although almost a third of the world's population is exposed to iodine deficiency (ID), and supplementation programs such as enriching table salt have been carried out or are being carried out at the global and national level, in many regions of the world, people are facing an increase in iodine intake, which is mainly due to the presence of large amounts of iodine in water, soil, agricultural products, or high consumption of seafood. Published articles were indexed in the Scopus database (from 2000 to 1 April 2023) were reviewed and analyzed by VOSviewer software. The results showed the growing interest of researchers over the last 20 years in environmental iodine intake. The results of this study can have a significant impact on the planning and policy-making of relevant officials and communities to supply the needed iodine.

The median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) of school-aged children has been commonly used as a surrogate to assess iodine status of a population including pregnant women. However, pregnant women have higher iodine requirements than children due to increased production of thyroid hormones. The aim of the study was to evaluate the iodine status of pregnant women and children as well as their household salt iodine concentration (SIC) in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Eligible pregnant women and children from all six counties of Quzhou in 2021 were recruited into the study. They were asked to complete a socio-demographic questionnaire and provide both a spot urine and a household table salt sample for the determination of UIC and SIC. A total of 629 pregnant women (mean age and gestation weeks of 29.6 years and 21.6 weeks, respectively) and 1273 school-aged children (mean age of 9 years and 49.8% of them were females) were included in the study. The overall median UIC of pregnant women and children in our sample was 127 (82, 193) µg/L and 222 (147, 327) µg/L, respectively, indicating sufficient iodine status in children but a risk of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency in pregnant women. Distribution of iodine nutrition in children varied significantly according to their sex and age (P < 0.05). The rate of adequately household iodised salt samples (18-33 mg/kg) provided by pregnant women and children was 92.4% and 90.6%, respectively. In conclusion, our results indicated a risk of insufficient iodine status in pregnant population of China, but iodine sufficiency in school-aged children. Our data also suggested that median UIC of children may not be used as a surrogate to assess iodine status in pregnant women.

Non-radical activation of persulfate (PS) by photocatalysts is an effective approach for removing organic pollutants from aqueous environments. In this study, a novel Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4 heterojunction was synthesized using a facile solvothermal approach and used for the first time for non-radical activation of PS to degrade propranolol (PRO) in the presence of visible light. The findings found that the degradation rate of PRO in the Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4/PS system was significantly increased from 19% to more than 90% within 90 min compared to the Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4 system. This indicated that the composite system exerted an excellent synergistic effect between the photocatalyst and the persulfate-based oxygenation. Quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that the non-radical pathway with singlet oxygen as the active species played a major role in the photocatalytic process. The existence of photo-generated holes during the reaction could also be directly involved in the oxidation of pollutants. Meanwhile, a possible PRO degradation pathway was also proposed. Furthermore, the impacts of pH, humic acid and common anions on the PRO degradation by the Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4/PS were explored, and the system's stability and reusability were also studied. This study exhibits a highly productive catalyst for PS activation via a non-radical pathway and provides a new idea for the degradation of PRO.

INTRODUCTION: Iodine is an essential mineral for fetal growth and brain development. The aim of this research was to evaluate goiter, iodine deficiency and intrauterine growth restriction in pregnant women of minority ethnic groups in Colombia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in six non-metropolitan areas of Colombia. RESULTS: A total of 318 Indigenous and Afro-descendant pregnant women were invited to participate: 248 (83.2%) Indigenous and 50 (16.8%) Afro-descendants were studied. The mean age was 24 years (range 13-44 years). Of the women, 130 (43.5%) were from the department of Cauca, 72 (24.1%) were from Córdoba, 28 (9.4%) were from Guajira, 26 (8.8%) were from Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, 22 (7.4%) were from Amazonas, 16 (5.4%) were from Meta and 4 (1.3%) were from the department of Cesar. A total of 244 (81.8%) were illiterate and 291 (97.7%) were of very low socioeconomic level. Goiter was observed in 69 (23.3%) pregnant women (38 (41.7%) from the department of Cauca, 10 (35.7%) from Guajira, 5 (31.2%) from Meta, 6 (27.2%) from Amazonas and 10 (13.8%) from Córdoba). Iodine deficiency (<100 µg/L) was observed in 42 (14.9%) pregnant women (16 (11.6%) mild (50-99 µg/L), 19 (13.8%) moderate (20-49 µg/L) and 7 (5.1%) severe (<20 µg/L)). Being literate was a protective factor for iodine deficiency (odds ratio (OR)=0.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.04-0.84, p=0.016). Being illiterate and iodine deficient was only a risk factor for goiter (OR=6.72, 95%CI 3.9-9.5, p=0.038) in the department of Cauca. CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of goiter, iodine deficiency and intrauterine growth restriction was observed in minority ethnic groups of Colombia. The highest prevalence and risk was observed in the department of Cauca.

Background & Objectives: Iodine deficiency is considered as a global challenge, even after decades of efforts to solve the issue. Our objective was to assess the iodine deficiency status and associated prevalence of goiter in population groups (school-age children and women) from rural areas of District Poonch, and to assess the determinants of iodine deficiency in the area. Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted in District Poonch Azad Jammu and Kashmir from 25 April 2022 to 30 June 2023. A total of 150 goiter patients from different villages of the District Poonch was included. Their urinary iodine concentration and goiter prevalence was assessed. Using palpation techniques, a trained and experienced public health officer assessed the presence of goiters based on WHO/ UNICEF/ICCIDD criteria. Descriptive statistics were computed for continuous variables and presented in frequency and percentage, based on the distributional characteristics of the data. chi-square was used to check association between socio-demographic factors and goiter. It was a HEC Project No.: 20-16988/NRPU/R&D/HEC/2021. Results: Iodine status and associated goiter prevalence was high and 59.3% of them were severely iodine deficient. Within the district, the highest severe iodine deficiency was observed in 81.1% goiter patients of the Rawalakot subdivision, Hajira and Abbaspur subdivisions. Regarding goiter status 40% of the patients were classified with palpable-visible goiter and 56% were characterized with visible but nodular goiter. Conclusion: Study showed that there was a severe iodine deficiency and associated goiter prevalence in the area. Policymakers should take actions for future to overcome iodine deficiency in future.

Nutritional support is considered as one of the components of disease-modifying therapy for postpartum depressive disorder. Such nutrients include iodine, which is an important trace element in the development and functioning of the central nervous system. The brief review presents updated knowledge about the relationship of iodine deficiency with the development and severity of postpartum depressive disorders in women, based on the analysis and generalization of the results of domestic and international studies.

Objective: To monitor the iodine status in Romanian schoolchildren and neonates after 20 years of mandatory salt iodization. Subjects and methods: In a national representative sample of 1352 children (7-12 years) we measured median urinary iodine concentration (mUIC) and creatinine (UCC) in spot urine samples and investigated household use of iodized salt. From 18349 neonates registered in the MEDILOG program for TSH screening we calculated the percentage of neonatal TSH >5 mIU/L (<3% indicating adequate iodine intake). Results: mUIC in schoolchildren was 141 µg/L (bootstrapped 95% CI 134, 146), showing adequate iodine intake in all but 1 county; mUIC was similar in historical endemic and non-endemic counties (140 µg/L and 143 ug/L, respectively) and in urban and rural areas (140 µg/L and 142 µg/L, respectively); mUIC/UCC = 118 ug/g. Iodized salt was used in 62% of households. In children using iodized salt (61.7%), mUIC was higher than in those using coarse (non-iodized) salt (24.6%): 150 vs. 121 µg/L (p<0.001). The percentage of nTSH >5 mIU/L was 14.7% (3.2%-27.3%), higher in non-endemic counties and urban areas. Conclusion: The current salt iodization program for households and bakery industry ensures an adequate iodine intake in schoolchildren. Discordantly, nTSH levels indicate a mild-moderate ID in neonates, suggesting ID in pregnant women. The percentage of households using iodized salt is below the recommended >90% needed for an efficient ID prevention program. More efforts should be directed to increase the public awareness on the health risks of ID and the benefits of ID prevention, notably for the neurointellectual development in children.

Iodine supply is crucial during pregnancy to ensure that the proper thyroid function of mother and baby support fetal brain development. Little is known about iodine status or its dietary determinants in pregnant women in the Republic of Cyprus. We therefore recruited 128 pregnant women at their first-trimester ultrasound scan to a cross-sectional study. We collected spot-urine samples for the measurement of urinary iodine concentration (UIC, µg/l) and creatinine concentration (Creat, g/l), the latter of which allows us to correct for urine dilution and to compute the iodine-to-creatinine ratio (UI/Creat). Women completed a FFQ and a general questionnaire. We used a General Linear model to explore associations between maternal and dietary characteristics with UI/Creat. The median UIC (105 µg/l) indicated iodine deficiency according to the WHO criterion (threshold for adequacy = 150 µg/l), and the UI/Creat was also low at 107 µg/g. Only 32 % (n 45) of women reported the use of iodine-containing supplements; users had a higher UI/Creat than non-users (131 µg/g v. 118 µg/g), though this difference was NS in the adjusted analysis (P = 0·37). Of the dietary components, only egg intake was significantly associated with a higher UI/Creat in adjusted analyses (P = 0·018); there was no significant association with milk, dairy products or fish intake. Our results suggest that pregnant women in Cyprus have inadequate iodine status and are at risk of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency. Further research on dietary sources in this population is required.

BACKGROUND: Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of thyroid disease, and in its severe form can result in cretinism; the impairment of the brain development of a child. Pregnant and breastfeeding women's daily iodine requirement is elevated due to physiological changes in iodine metabolism, requiring up to double the iodine intake of other women. Although Nigeria was the first African country to be declared iodine sufficient in 2007, recent evidence has shown that only about seven in ten households consume salt with adequate iodine content (≥ 15 ppm), with variation across states. The study aimed to assess the Individual- and household-, community- and state-level factors associated with inadequate iodised salt consumption among pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers in Nigeria. METHODS: This study utilised the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey to assess factors associated with inadequate iodised salt consumption among 4911 pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers in Nigeria. The descriptive analysis was presented using frequencies and percentages. The prevalence of adequate and inadequate iodised salt consumption with their 95% confidence interval were computed. Several multi-level mixed effect log-binomial logistic regressions were used to explore the factors associated with inadequate iodised salt consumption. The Loglikelihood, Akaike Information Criterion and Bayesian Information Criterion were used to assess the goodness of fit of the models. All analyses were adjusted for the complex survey design and analysed using Stata 15.0 at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The prevalence of inadequate iodised salt consumption among pregnant and breastfeeding mothers was 35.2% (95% CI: 33.1-37.5). Inadequate consumption of iodised salt was highest among pregnant and breastfeeding women aged 45-49 years (48.2%; 95%CI: 37.8-58.8), as well as those with non-formal education (52.7%; 95%CI: 47.7-57.6) and no education (34.6%; 95%CI: 31.3-38.1). Our findings revealed that pregnant and breastfeeding women living in the poorer, middle, richer and richest quintiles were 32%, 47%, 35% and 62% less likely to consume salt with inadequate iodine compared to those in the poorest households. Those with non-formal education were 1.8 times (95%CI: 1.36-2.42) more likely to consume salt with deficient iodine than those without education. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers residing in moderately and most deprived communities were 3.5 (95%CI: 2.57-4.73) and 4.7 times (95%CI: 3.38-6.55) more likely to consume salt with inadequate iodine than those from least deprived communities. Women in the Northwestern region and those from the Southwestern region were 4.0 and 3.5 times, respectively, more likely to consume salt with inadequate iodine compared to pregnant and breastfeeding women residing in the North-Central region. CONCLUSIONS: The study has shown that inadequate consumption of iodised salt dominates among older pregnant and breastfeeding women. Also, women with non-formal education have higher prospects of consuming salt with lesser iodine. There is a need to enhance women's economic opportunities and empowerment as well as sensitisation on their nutritional requirements during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Both formal and non-formal educational initiatives on nutrition are extremely important and should be prioritised by the Nigerian government in its efforts to encourage the consumption of iodised salt among pregnant and lactating mothers. Additionally, health promotion interventions that seek to advocate iodised salt intake must be prioritised by the actors in the health sector.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and determinants of goitre among children aged 6-12 years at South Kordofan state. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional facility-based study. SETTING: The study was conducted in twenty villages of South Kordofan state during a medical mission. PARTICIPANTS: All 575 school-age children (6-12 years) who attended the medical day were examined for clinical assessment of goitre. RESULTS: The prevalence of goitre among children of South Kordofan was 42·8 % (grade 1: 15·7 %, grade 2: 27·1 %). Only 24·2 % of caregivers reported using iodised salt. Mothers working as farmers (OR: 3·209, CI 95 % 1·437, 7·167; P = 0·004) and children of Darforian tribes (OR: 21·799, CI 95 % 2·566, 185·226; P = 0·005) were found to be significantly associated with higher prevalence of goitre among children. This contrasts with children of African tribes, where they were found to have less goitre prevalence (OR: 0·432, CI 95 % 0·213, 0·875; P = 0·02). Iodised salt utilisation (OR = 0·523, CI 95 % 0·320, 0·854; P = 0·01) was found associated with a lower prevalence of goitre. CONCLUSION: Even though National Iodine Deficiency Disorders control programs were initiated in Sudan more than 25 years ago, the prevalence of goitre among children in South Kordofan state was alarming (42·8 %). Efforts to improve access to iodised salt, increase utilisation and raise awareness are urgently needed.

BACKGROUND: Iodine deficiency is a global public health threat, affecting an estimated two billion people. The median urinary iodine concentration is more reliable in determining recent iodine intakes and the risks of iodine deficiency. Therefore, this study was aimed to identify the factors associated with recent iodine intake level using median urinary iodine concentration as an indicator among household food handlers in southwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based survey was conducted with selected households using a pretested interviewer-administered questionnaire in southwest Ethiopia. A 20-gram sample of table salt and a 5 ml causal urine samples were also collected and analyzed using rapid test kit and a Sandell-Kolthoff reaction, respectively. A salt iodine concentration above 15 ppm was classified as adequately iodized and a median urinary iodine concentration between 100 and 200µgl- 1 was considered as adequate iodine intake. A bivariable and multivariable logistic regression model was fitted. Crude and adjusted odds ratios with their 95% confidence levels were reported. Associations with a p-value ≤ 0.05 were used to declare statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 478 women were included, with a mean age of 33.2 (± 8.4 years). Only 268 (56.1%) of the households had adequately iodized salt (> 15 ppm). The median urinary iodine concentration (interquartile range) was 87.5 µg l- 1 (45.6-107.6). In a fitted multivariable logistic regression model (p-value = 0.911), illiterate women (AOR = 4.61; 95% CI: 2.17, 9.81), poorly iodized salt in the household (AOR = 25.0; 95% CI: 13-48), salt purchased from open market (AOR = 1.93; 95% CI: 1.0, 3.73) and women who do not read the label during purchasing the salt (AOR = 3.07; 95% CI: 1.31, 7.17) were important predictors of the risk of Iodine deficiency. CONCLUSION: Despite public health efforts to improve iodine intake, its deficiency is still a major public health problem among southwest Ethiopian women.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding iodine deficiency (ID) burdens and trends in Asia can help guide effective intervention strategies. This study aims to report the incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of ID in 48 Asian countries during the period 1990-2019. STUDY DESIGN: Data on ID were retrieved from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 and estimated by age, sex, geographical region, and sociodemographic index (SDI). METHODS: The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to evaluate the changing trend of age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) related to ID during the period 1990-2019. RESULTS: In Asia, there were 126,983,965.8 cases with 5,466,213.1 new incidence and 1,765,995.5 DALYs of ID in 2019. Between 1999 and 2019, the EAPC in ASIR, ASPR and ASDR were -0.6 (95% confidence interval [CI], -0.8 to -0.4), -0.9 (95% CI, -1.2 to -0.7), and -1.6 (95% CI, -1.8 to -1.5), respectively. Malaysia charted the largest decrease in ASIR, ASPR, and ASDR (82.4%, 85.3%, and 80.9% separately), whereas the Philippines and Pakistan were the only two countries that witnessed an increase in ASIR and ASPR. ID burdens were more pronounced in women, countries located to the south of the Himalayas, and low-middle SDI regions. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence, prevalence, and DALYs of ID in Asia substantially decreased from 1990 to 2019. Women and low-middle SDI countries have relatively high ID burdens. Governments need to pay constant attention to the implementation and monitoring of universal salt iodization.

The aim of the research was to study and compare iodine concentration in natural waters originating from aquifers of different ages, primarily residents use for drinking purposes. The analysis was based on the original data on the samples collected during the fieldwork in the Bryansk region (2013-2017) and in the Oryol region (2016-2017). In addition to iodine concentration, the main geochemical parameters (salinity, etc.) were determined in the selected waters. The results showed a significant variation of iodine in waters from both regions (Bryansk region-from 0.7 to 41.2 µg/l; Oryol region-from 1.12 to 36.8 µg/l), the difference being apparently due to different ages and origins of the sampled aquifers (Quaternary, Upper Devonian and Cretaceous deposits). The overall low provision of surface water with iodine was found both in the Bryansk region (median for shallow wells-5.82 µg/l, median for surface water-6.76 µg/l) and in the Oryol region (median for shallow wells-2.96 µg/l, median for surface water-7.4 µg/l). The data obtained deserve attention during organization of monitoring and implementation of measures preventing thyroid diseases.

Background: The recommended urinary iodine concentration (UIC) levels in the overall adult population is 100-199 µg/L whereas 150-249 µg/L in pregnant women. Objectives: The objective is to determine the prevalence and severity of iodine deficiency in pregnant women in Amasya, which is located in the Western Black Sea region in Turkey, where sufficient iodine levels were achieved in the normal population. Methods: In this single-center study, we retrospectively searched hospital patient records and identified pregnant women who were assessed for iodine levels between January 2019 and January 2021. A total of 408 pregnant women were found eligible for the study. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, antithyroid peroxidase antibodies, and antithyroglobulin antibodies in serum samples and UIC were evaluated and compared between the trimesters. Insufficient iodine intake in pregnancy was defined as UIC <150 µg/L. Results: Median UIC and median TSH levels were 129 (range 45-452) µg/L and 2.98 (range 0.01-71.2) µIU/ml, respectively. 81.1% of pregnant women had UIC <150 µg/L. Iodine intake was adequate in 17.4% of pregnant whereas excessive in 1.5%. Prevalence of iodine deficiency during 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters were 82.1%, 82.4%, and 74.5%, respectively. There was no significant difference in UIC levels between trimesters (P = 0.399). 72.9% of pregnant womens had TSH >2.5 mIU/L in the 1st trimester. Conclusion: Iodine deficiency in pregnancy may exist in an iodine-sufficient population. Appropriate measures must be taken to ensure sufficient iodine levels in these individuals.
