RESUMO

Significantly reducing the iridium content in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts while maintaining high electrocatalytic activity and stability is a key priority in the development of large-scale proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. In practical catalysts, this is usually achieved by depositing thin layers of iridium oxide on a dimensionally stable metal oxide support material that reduces the volumetric packing density of iridium in the electrode assembly. By comparing two support materials with different structure types, it is shown that the chemical nature of the metal oxide support can have a strong influence on the crystallization of the iridium oxide phase and the direction of crystal growth. Epitaxial growth of crystalline IrO2 is achieved on the isostructural support material SnO2, both of which have a rutile structure with very similar lattice constants. Crystallization of amorphous IrOx on an SnO2 substrate results in interconnected, ultrasmall IrO2 crystallites that grow along the surface and are firmly anchored to the substrate. Thereby, the IrO2 phase enables excellent conductivity and remarkable stability of the catalyst at higher overpotentials and current densities at a very low Ir content of only 14 at%. The chemical epitaxy described here opens new horizons for the optimization of conductivity, activity and stability of electrocatalysts and the development of other epitaxial materials systems.

RESUMO

Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolyticus) is a major foodborne pathogen, which can cause serious foodborne illnesses like diarrhoea. Rapid on-site detection of foodborne pathogens is an ideal way to respond to foodborne illnesses. Herein, we provide an electrochemical sensor for rapid on-site detection. This sensor utilized a pH-sensitive metal-oxide material for the concurrent isothermal amplification and label-free detection of nucleic acids. Based on a pH-sensitive hydrated iridium oxide oxyhydroxide film (HIROF), the electrode transforms the hydrogen ion compound generated during nucleic acid amplification into potential, so as to achieve a real-time detection. The results can be transmitted to a smartphone via Bluetooth. Moreover, HIROF was applied in nucleic acid device detection, with a super-Nernst sensitivity of 77.6 mV/pH in the pH range of 6.0-8.5, and the sensitivity showed the best results so far. Detection of V. parahaemolyticus by this novel method showed a detection limit of 1.0 × 103 CFU/mL, while the time consumption was only 30 min, outperforming real-time fluorescence loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Therefore, the characteristics of compact, portable, and fast make the sensor more widely used in on-site detection.

RESUMO

Nanostructured inorganic materials have potential advantages as glucose-sensing elements in diabetes care, thereby circumventing the need for expensive enzymatic agents. However, many nonenzymatic sensors face challenges related to selectivity and reliability, reducing their efficacy in body fluids. In this study, we introduce an Iridium oxide (IrO2)-based non-enzymatic glucose sensor. This sensor demonstrates exceptional electro-catalytic properties in human serum, characterized by high sensitivity (638 µA µM-1cm2) and a consistent recovery rate (∼104%) across 15 cycles in saline. Furthermore, its impressive performance in human serum, as evidenced by a low relative standard deviation (RSD <1.57%), underscores its applicability in biological matrices such as interstitial fluids. Overall, the IrO2 sensor is a promising, highly reversible, economical, and simple method for detecting glucose in continuous monitoring systems.

RESUMO

Electrodeposited amorphous hydrated iridium oxide (IrOx) is a promising material for pH sensing due to its high sensitivity and the ease of fabrication. However, durability and variability continue to restrict the sensor's effectiveness. Variation in probe films can be seen in both performance and fabrication, but it has been found that performance variation can be controlled with potentiostatic conditioning (PC). To make proper use of this technique, the morphological and chemical changes affecting the conditioning process must be understood. Here, a thorough study of this material, after undergoing PC in a pH-sensing-relevant potential regime, was conducted by voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fitting of XPS data was performed, guided by raw trends in survey scans, core orbitals, and valence spectra, both XPS and UPS. The findings indicate that the PC process can repeatably control and conform performance and surface bonding to desired calibrations and distributions, respectively; PC was able to reduce sensitivity and offset ranges to as low as ±0.7 mV/pH and ±0.008 V, respectively, and repeat bonding distributions over ~2 months of sample preparation. Both Ir/O atomic ratios (shifting from 4:1 to over 4.5:1) and fitted components assigned hydroxide or oxide states based on the literature (low-voltage spectra being almost entirely with suggested hydroxide components, and high-voltage spectra almost entirely with suggested oxide components) trend across the polarization range. Self-consistent valence, core orbital, and survey quantitative trends point to a likely mechanism of ligand conversion from hydroxide to oxide, suggesting that the conditioning process enforces specific state mixtures that include both theoretical Ir(III) and Ir(IV) species, and raising the conditioning potential alters the surface species from an assumed mixture of Ir species to more oxidized Ir species.

RESUMO

Platinum alloys are highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic conditions. However, these alloys are susceptible to metal loss through leaching and degradation, leading to reduced catalyst stability and activity. Recently, it has been shown that doping with oxophilic elements can significantly alleviate these problems, with a prominent example being Mo-doped Pt alloys. Here, to achieve atomic scale understanding of the exceptional activity and stability of these alloys, we present a detailed density functional theory description of the dopants' structures and impact on electrocatalyst properties. Beginning with the Mo/Pt system, we demonstrate that Mo can be stabilized in the form of low-dimensional oxyhydroxide moieties on Pt defects. The resulting structures enhance stability and activity via distinct physical processes, with the Mo moieties both directly inhibiting Pt dissolution at defects and indirectly enhancing ORR activity by generation of strain fields on surrounding Pt terraces. We then generalize these analyses to other metal dopant elements, and we demonstrate that similar low-dimensional oxyhydroxide structures control the electrocatalytic properties through an intricate interplay of the structures' acid stability, intrinsic activity for the ORR, and ability to induce ORR-promoting strain fields on Pt.

RESUMO

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in electrochemical energy conversion devices. Recent advances have demonstrated that OER catalysts through lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) can bypass the scaling relation-induced limitations on those catalysts through adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). Among various catalysts, IrOx , the most promising OER catalyst, suffers from low activities for its AEM pathway. Here, it is demonstrated that a pre-electrochemical acidic etching treatments on the hybrids of IrOx and Y2 O3 (IrOx /Y2 O3 ) switch the AEM-dominated OER pathway to LOM-dominated one in alkali electrolyte, delivering a high performance with a low overpotential of 223 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a long-term stability. Mechanism investigations suggest that the pre-electrochemical etching treatments create more oxygen vacancies in catalysts due to the dissolution of yttrium and then provide highly active surface lattice oxygen for participating OER, thereby enabling the LOM-dominated pathway and resulting in a significantly increased OER activity in basic electrolyte.

RESUMO

A paper-based electrochemical dual-function biosensor capable of determining pH and TCO2 was synthesized for the first time using an iridium oxide pH electrode and an all-solid-state ion electrode (ASIE). In the study, to obtain highly reliable results, the biosensor was equipped with a real-time pH correction function before TCO2 measurements. Compared to traditional liquid-filling carbon dioxide detection sensors, the utilization of ferrocene endows our novel sensor with abundant positive sites, and thus greatly improves its performance. Conversely, the introduction of MXene with conductivity close to that of metals reduces electrode resistance, which is beneficial for accelerating the electrochemical reaction of the sensor and reducing LOD. After optimization, the detection range of TCO2 is 0.095 nM-0.66 M, with a detection limit of as low as 0.023 nM. In addition, the sensor was used in real serum sample-spiked recovery experiments and comparison experiments with existing clinical blood gas analyzers, which confirmed the effectiveness of its clinical application. This study provides a method for the rational design of paper-based electrochemical biosensors and a new approach for the clinical detection of blood carbon dioxide.

RESUMO

Microliter volume pH determination is of great importance in the biomedical and industrial applications. The current available pH meter and measurement techniques are hard to reach the high demand of microliter volume pH determination in a repeatable, stable, and sensitivity manner. This work aims to fill the gap of microliter volume pH measurements while maintaining good sensing performance. The electrodeposited iridium oxide and cobalt hydroxide along with gold electrode served as working, counter, and reference electrode, respectively, for 10-12 µL volume pH measurements with Nernst constant of 55.9 ± 4.4 mV/pH. The electrodeposited thin film was further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometry, etc. to confirm its morphology and composition. The constructed pH sensor was used for human serum sample measurements to confirm the suitability of future applications. The results show that it has only 0.80% variation compared to a commercial pH meter with a limit of detection (LOD, or resolution) of ± 0.01 pH. It holds a great potential to be used in the future for microliter volume in situ pH measurements.

RESUMO

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers suffer mainly from slow kinetics regarding the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Noble metal oxides, like IrO2 and RuO2, are generally more active for OER than metal electrodes, exhibiting low anodic overpotentials and high catalytic activity. However, issues like electrocatalyst stability under continuous operation and cost minimization through a reduction in the catalyst loading are of great importance to the research community. In this study, unsupported IrO2 of various particle sizes (different calcination temperatures) were evaluated for the OER and as anode electrodes for PEM water electrolyzers. The electrocatalysts were synthesized by the modified Adams method, and the effect of calcination temperature on the properties of IrO2 electrocatalysts is investigated. Physicochemical characterization was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. For the electrochemical performance of synthesized electrocatalysts in the OER, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) were conducted in a typical three-cell electrode configuration, using glassy carbon as the working electrode, which the synthesized electrocatalysts were cast on in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The materials, as anode PEM water electrolysis electrodes, were further evaluated in a typical electrolytic cell using a Nafion®115 membrane as the electrolyte and Pt/C as the cathode electrocatalyst. The IrO2 electrocatalyst calcined at 400 °C shows high crystallinity with a 1.24 nm particle size, a high specific surface area (185 m2 g-1), and a high activity of 177 mA cm-2 at 1.8 V for PEM water electrolysis.

RESUMO

Water electrolysis, which is a promising high-purity H2 production method, lacks pH-universality; moreover, highly efficient electrocatalysts that accelerate the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are scarce. Geometric structure engineering and electronic structure modulation can be efficiently used to improve catalyst activity. Herein, a facile Ar plasma treatment method to fabricate a composite of uniformly dispersed iridium-copper oxide nanoclusters supported on defective graphene (DG) to form IrCuOx @DG, is described. Acid leaching can be used to remove Cu atoms and generate porous IrOx nanoclusters supported on DG (P-IrOx @DG), which can serve as efficient and robust pH-universal OER electrocatalysts. Moreover, when paired with commercial 20 wt% Pt/C, P-IrOx @DG can deliver current densities of 350.0, 317.6, and 47.1 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 2.2 V for overall water splitting in 0.5 m sulfuric acid, 1.0 m potassium hydroxide, and 1.0 m phosphate buffer solution, respectively, outperforming commercial IrO2 and nonporous IrOx nanoclusters supported on DG (O-IrOx @DG). Probing experiment, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that Cu removal can successfully create P-IrOx nanoclusters and introduce unsaturated Ir atoms. The optimum binding energies of oxygenated intermediate species on unsaturated Ir sites and ultrafine IrOx nanoclusters contribute to the high intrinsic OER catalytic activity of P-IrOx @DG.

RESUMO

In vivo electrochemistry is a vital tool of neuroscience that allows for the detection, identification, and quantification of neurotransmitters, their metabolites, and other important analytes. One important goal of in vivo electrochemistry is a better understanding of progressive neurological disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease). A complete understanding of such disorders can only be achieved through a combination of acute (i.e., minutes to hours) and chronic (i.e., days or longer) experimentation. Chronic studies are more challenging because they require prolonged implantation of electrodes, which elicits an immune response, leading to glial encapsulation of the electrodes and altered electrode performance (i.e., biofouling). Biofouling leads to increased electrode impedance and reference electrode polarization, both of which diminish the selectivity and sensitivity of in vivo electrochemical measurements. The increased impedance factor has been successfully mitigated previously with the use of a counter electrode, but the challenge of reference electrode polarization remains. The commonly used Ag/AgCl reference electrode lacks the long-term potential stability in vivo required for chronic measurements. In addition, the cytotoxicity of Ag/AgCl adversely affects animal experimentation and prohibits implantation in humans, hindering translational research progress. Thus, a move toward biocompatible reference electrodes with superior chronic potential stability is necessary. Two qualifying materials, iridium oxide and boron-doped diamond, are introduced and discussed in terms of their electrochemical properties, biocompatibilities, fabrication methods, and applications. In vivo electrochemistry continues to advance toward more chronic experimentation in both animal models and humans, necessitating the utilization of biocompatible reference electrodes that should provide superior potential stability and allow for unprecedented chronic signal fidelity when used with a counter electrode for impedance mitigation.

RESUMO

pH value plays an important role in many fields such as chemistry and biology; therefore, rapid and accurate pH measurement is very important. Because of its advantages in preparation, wide test range, rapid response, and good biocompatibility, iridium oxide material has received more and more attention. In this paper, we present a method for preparing iridium oxide pH microelectrodes based on the sputter deposition method. The sputtering parameters of iridium oxide are also studied and optimized. Open-circuit potential tests show that microelectrodes exhibit near-Nernstian pH response with good linearity (about 60 mV/pH), fast response, high stability (a slight periodic fluctuation of potential change <2.5 mV in 24 h), and good reversibility in the pH range of 1.00-13.00.

RESUMO

Nanostructuring nanocarbons with IrOx yields to material coatings with large charge capacities for neural electrostimulation, and large reproducibility in time, that carbons do not exhibit. This work shows the contributions of carbon and the different nanostructures present, as well as the impact of functionalizing graphene with oxygen and nitrogen, and the effects of including conducting polymers within the hybrid materials. Different mammalian neural growth models differentiate the roles of the substrate material in absence and in presence of applied electric fields and address optimal electrodes for the future clinical applications.

RESUMO

Chaos and the natural evolution of tumor systems can lead to the failure of tumor therapies. Herein, we demonstrate that iridium oxide nanoparticles (IrOx ) possess acid-activated oxidase and peroxidase-like functions and wide pH-dependent catalase-like properties. The integration of glucose oxidase (GOD) unlocked the oxidase and peroxidase activities of IrOx by the production of gluconic acid from glucose by GOD catalysis in cancer cells, and the produced H2 O2 was converted into O2 to compensate its consumption in GOD catalysis owing to the catalase-like function of the nanozyme, thus resulting in the continual consumption of glucose and the self-supply of substrates to generate superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical. Moreover, IrOx can constantly consume glutathione (GSH) by self-cyclic valence alternation of IrIV and IrIII . These cascade reactions lead to a "butterfly effect" of initial starvation therapy and the subsequent pressure of multiple reactive oxygen species (ROS) to completely break the self-adaption of cancer cells.

RESUMO

Iridium oxide pH electrodes employing the carbonate melt oxidation method were fabricated with oxidation temperatures of 750 °C, 800 °C and 850 °C, respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) images showed that the oxide film regularized with the increase in oxidation temperatures. The pH response, response time and long-term stability of the electrodes indicated that the electrodes made at 850 °C had the best performance. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) surveys investigated the change in the electrodes' chemical composition and element oxidation states at 850 °C, and the results showed that the relative content of Ir3+ had increased by 23.9%, and the Ir4+ and Ir6+ had decreased by 10.9% and 13%, respectively, in the surface oxide layer after one month of aging. However, the relative contents of Ir3+, Ir4+ and Ir6+ were almost constant for the inner oxide layer. Meanwhile, the XPS result also indicated that the outer oxide layer of the electrode had a higher hydration degree than the inner oxide layer.

RESUMO

Highly active and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is greatly desired. Iridium oxide/graphitic carbon nitride (IrO2 /GCN) heterostructures are designed with low-coordinate IrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) confined on superhydrophilic highly stable GCN nanosheets for efficient acidic OER. The GCN nanosheets not only ensure the homogeneous distribution and confinement of IrO2 NPs but also endows the heterostructured catalyst system with a superhydrophilic surface, which can maximize the exposure of active sites and promotes mass diffusion. The coordination number of Ir atoms is decreased owing to the strong interaction between IrO2 and GCN, leading to lattice strain and increment of electron density around Ir sites and hence modulating the attachment between the catalyst and reaction intermediates. The optimized IrO2 /GCN heterostructure delivers not only by far the highest mass activity among the reported IrO2 -based catalysts but also decent durability.

RESUMO

The properties of multi-wall carbon nanotubes decorated with iridium oxide nanoparticles (IrOx-MWCNTs) are studied to detect harmful gases such as nitrogen dioxide and ammonia. IrOx nanoparticles were synthetized using a two-step method, based on a hydrolysis and acid condensation growth mechanism. The metal oxide nanoparticles obtained were employed for decorating the sidewalls of carbon nanotubes. Iridium-oxide nanoparticle decorated carbon nanotube material showed higher and more stable responses towards NH3 and NO2 than bare carbon nanotubes under different experimental conditions, establishing the optimal operating temperatures and estimating the limits of detection and quantification. Furthermore, the nanomaterials employed were studied using different morphological and compositional characterization techniques and a gas sensing mechanism is proposed.

RESUMO

In the effort of developing micro-electrochemical sensors, the miniaturization of reference electrodes has been a challenging task. In this paper, a flexible micro reference electrode with an internal electrolyte reservoir is reported. This new device is based on a unique microfabricated parylene tube structure, which is filled with Cl- rich electrolyte, into which a 50 µm diameter silver (Ag) wire covered with a 7.4 µm thick silver chloride (AgCl) layer is inserted. The distal end of the tube is filled with potassium chloride (KCl) saturated agarose gel. The Ag wire, thick AgCl layer, and internal electrolyte reservoir lead to a long operation time and a stable reference voltage. The drift over a 10-hour period has been found to be less than 2 mV. The total operation time of the device has exceeded 100 hours. Furthermore, the compatibility with microfabrication allows the integration of other components, leading to truly miniaturized electrochemical sensors or sensing systems. To prove this, we demonstrated a pH sensor by combining the reference electrode and an iridium oxide electrode monolithically integrated on the surface of the parylene tube.

RESUMO

Water contamination is a main inducement of human diseases. It is an important step to monitor the water quality in the water distribution system. Due to the features of large size, high cost, and complicated structure of traditional water determination sensors and devices, it is difficult to realize real-time water monitoring on a large scale. In this paper, we present a multi-parameter sensor chip, which is miniature, low-cost, and robust, to detect the pH, conductivity, and temperature of water simultaneously. The sensor chip was fabricated using micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) techniques. Iridium oxide film was electrodeposited as the pH-sensing material. The atomic ratio of Ir(III) to Ir(IV) is about 1.38 according to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The pH sensing electrode showed super-Nernstian response (-67.60 mV/pH) and good linearity (R² = 0.9997), in the range of pH 2.22 to pH 11.81. KCl-agar and epoxy were used as the electrolyte layer and liquid junction for the solid-state reference electrode, respectively, and its potential stability in deionized water was 56 h. The conductivity cell exhibited a linear determination range from 21.43 µ S / cm to 1.99 mS / cm , and the electrode constant was 1.566 cm-1. Sensitivity of the temperature sensor was 5.46 Ω / ° C . The results indicate that the developed sensor chip has potential application in water quality measurements.

RESUMO

Currently, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients lack the ability to track their lung health at home, relying instead on doctor checkups leading to delayed treatment and lung damage. By leveraging the ubiquity of the smartphone to lower costs and increase portability, a smartphone-based peripheral pH measurement device was designed to attach directly to the headphone port to harvest power and communicate with a smartphone application. This platform was tested using prepared pH buffers and sputum samples from CF patients. The system matches within ~0.03 pH of a benchtop pH meter while fully powering itself and communicating with a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone paired with either a glass or Iridium Oxide (IrOx) electrode. The IrOx electrodes were found to have 25% higher sensitivity than the glass probes at the expense of larger drift and matrix sensitivity that can be addressed with proper calibration. The smartphone-based platform has been demonstrated as a portable replacement for laboratory pH meters, and supports both highly robust glass probes and the sensitive and miniature IrOx electrodes with calibration. This tool can enable more frequent pH sputum tracking for CF patients to help detect the onset of pulmonary exacerbation to provide timely and appropriate treatment before serious damage occurs.
