RESUMO

Biomembranes are complex materials composed of lipids and proteins that compartmentalize biochemistry. They are actively remodeled in response to physical and metabolic cues, as well as during cell differentiation and stress. The concept of homeoviscous adaptation has become a textbook example of membrane responsiveness. Here, we discuss limitations and common misconceptions revolving around it. By highlighting key moments in the life cycle of a transmembrane protein, we illustrate that membrane thickness and a finely regulated membrane compressibility are crucial to facilitate proper membrane protein insertion, function, sorting, and inheritance. We propose that the unfolded protein response (UPR) provides a mechanism for endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane homeostasis by sensing aberrant transverse membrane stiffening and triggering adaptive responses that re-establish membrane compressibility.

Imbalances in the amounts of amyloid-ß peptides (Aß) generated by the membrane proteases ß- and γ-secretase are considered as a trigger of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cell-free studies of γ-secretase have shown that increasing membrane thickness modulates Aß generation but it has remained unclear if these effects are translatable to cells. Here we show that the very long-chain fatty acid erucic acid (EA) triggers acyl chain remodeling in AD cell models, resulting in substantial lipidome alterations which included increased esterification of EA in membrane lipids. Membrane remodeling enhanced γ-secretase processivity, resulting in the increased production of the potentially beneficial Aß37 and/or Aß38 species in multiple cell lines. Unexpectedly, we found that the membrane remodeling stimulated total Aß secretion by cells expressing WT γ-secretase but lowered it for cells expressing an aggressive familial AD mutant γ-secretase. We conclude that EA-mediated modulation of membrane composition is accompanied by complex lipid homeostatic changes that can impact amyloidogenic processing in different ways and elicit distinct γ-secretase responses, providing critical implications for lipid-based AD treatment strategies.

Fluid transport across intervessel pit membranes of angiosperm xylem plays a major role in plant transpiration, with transport resistance largely depending on pore constriction sizes. Traditionally, fluid particles traversing pit membranes are assumed to cross a single instead of multiple pore constrictions. We tested a multi-layered pit membrane model in xylem of eight angiosperm species by estimating the size frequency of pore constrictions in relation to pit membrane thickness and compared modelled data with perfusion characteristics of nanoscale gold particles based on transmission electron microscopy. The size frequency of modelled pore constrictions showed similar patterns to the measured number of perfused particle sizes inside pit membranes, although frequency values measured were 10-50 times below modelled data. Small particles enter pit membranes most easily, especially when injected in thin pit membranes. The trapping of gold particles by pore constrictions becomes more likely with increasing pore constriction number and pit membrane thickness. While quantitative differences between modelled and experimental data are due to various practical limitations, their qualitative agreement supports a multi-layered pit membrane model with multiple pore constrictions. Pore constrictions between 5 and 50 nm are realistic, and confirm the mesoporous nature of pit membranes.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to investigate the sinus membrane thickness (SMT) adjacent to healthy endodontically-treated maxillary molars with or without protruded apical foramen into the sinus cavity using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Images of 207 non-smoker patients aged 18-40 were retrospectively analyzed, 140 were endodontically treated, and 136 were without endodontic treatment. Patients with any sinus pathology, teeth that have symptoms, or poor root filling were excluded. Study groups consisted of Group EM-I (endodontically treated and protruded apical foramen), Group EM-C (endodontically treated and contacted apical foramen), and similarly without endodontic treatment; Group M-I and Group M-C. SMT upon the mesial, distal, and palatal roots was measured. One-way ANOVA and Student's t-tests were performed. RESULTS: Group EM-I had the thickest sinus membrane compared to other groups (p = 0.013). SMT values were 2.37-2.60 mm in Group EM-I, and 1.34-1.58 mm in other groups. Thickening (> 2 mm) percentages were 33.45% in Group EM-I and between 4.25 and 8.25% in other groups. No statistical difference was detected between first and second molars and genders (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: When the apical foramen protruded into the sinus cavity, the conventional root canal treatment caused a minimal (between 2.37 mm and 2.60 mm) sinus membrane thickening with a rate of 33.45% based upon CBCT examinations.

The topology of the basement membrane (BM) affects cell physiology and pathology, and BM thickening is associated with various chronic lung diseases. In addition, the topology of commercially available poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) membranes, which are used in preclinical in vitro models, differs from that of the human BM, which has a fibrous and elastic structure. In this study, we verified the effect of BM thickness on the differentiation of normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells. To evaluate whether the thickness of poly-ε-carprolactone (PCL) mesh affects the differentiation of NHBE cells, cells were grown on thin- (6-layer) and thick-layer (80-layer) meshes consisting of electrospun PCL nanofibers using an air-liquid interface (ALI) cell culture system. It was found that the NHBE cells formed a normal pseudostratified epithelium composed of ciliated, goblet, and basal cells on the thin-layer PCL mesh; however, goblet cell hyperplasia was observed on the thick-layer PCL mesh. Differentiated NHBE cells cultured on the thick-layer PCL mesh also demonstrated increased epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) compared to those cultured on the thin-layer PCL mesh. In addition, expression of Sox9, nuclear factor (NF)-κB, and oxidative stress-related markers, which are also associated with goblet cell hyperplasia, was increased in the differentiated NHBE cells cultured on the thick-layer PCL mesh. Thus, the use of thick electrospun PCL mesh led to NHBE cells differentiating into hyperplastic goblet cells via EMT and the oxidative stress-related signaling pathway. Therefore, the topology of the BM, for example, thickness, may affect the differentiation direction of human bronchial epithelial cells.

The synergy between drought-responsive traits across different organs is crucial in the whole-plant mechanism influencing drought resilience. These organ interactions, however, are poorly understood, limiting our understanding of drought response strategies at the whole-plant level. Therefore, we need more integrative studies, especially on herbaceous species that represent many important food crops but remain underexplored in their drought response. We investigated inflorescence stems and rosette leaves of six Arabidopsis thaliana genotypes with contrasting drought tolerance, and combined anatomical observations with hydraulic measurements and gene expression studies to assess differences in drought response. The soc1ful double mutant was the most drought-tolerant genotype based on its synergistic combination of low stomatal conductance, largest stomatal safety margin, more stable leaf water potential during non-watering, reduced transcript levels of drought stress marker genes, and reduced loss of chlorophyll content in leaves, in combination with stems showing the highest embolism resistance, most pronounced lignification, and thickest intervessel pit membranes. In contrast, the most sensitive Cvi ecotype shows the opposite extreme of the same set of traits. The remaining four genotypes show variations in this drought syndrome. Our results reveal that anatomical, ecophysiological, and molecular adaptations across organs are intertwined, and multiple (differentially combined) strategies can be applied to acquire a certain level of drought tolerance.

The main component of phosphogypsum (PG) is CaSO4·2H2O. PG contains a few impurities, heavy metals, and radioisotopes, which limit the use of PG and pose a danger to the environment. In this study, under the excitation of a sodium hydroxide solution, the rheological properties of a paste with granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and PG treated with ultrasonic water washing were investigated. Experimental results showed that the ratio of GGBS to PG and the amount of sodium hydroxide solution significantly affect the density and viscosity of the paste, but the effect patterns of both are different. The maximum viscosity was 498 mPa·s when the ratio of GGBS to PG was 4:1. When the ratio changed from 3:2 to 1:4, the viscosity of the paste gradually decreased by 15.5%, 32.1%, 36.1%, and 46.8%, respectively. In contrast, the ratio of GGBS to PG had a greater effect on the viscosity than the amount of sodium hydroxide solution in terms of the standard consistency water consumption, viscosity, and water release ratio. The larger the PG ratio, the smaller the density, viscosity, and water release ratio of the paste. The variation in the ratio of GGBS to PG had a significant effect on the water film thickness of the paste, demonstrating that the larger the PG mixture, the larger the water film thickness of the paste, which reached 1.122 µm, 2.31 times the minimum water film thickness of the paste. At the same time, the water film thickness of the paste was negatively correlated with the water consumption of the standard consistency, viscosity, and water release ratio, and was positively correlated with the fluidity.

Hydraulic failure resulting from drought-induced embolism in the xylem of plants is a key determinant of reduced productivity and mortality. Methods to assess this vulnerability are difficult to achieve at scale, leading to alternative metrics and correlations with more easily measured traits. These efforts have led to the longstanding and pervasive assumed mechanistic link between vessel diameter and vulnerability in angiosperms. However, there are at least two problems with this assumption that requires critical re-evaluation: (1) our current understanding of drought-induced embolism does not provide a mechanistic explanation why increased vessel width should lead to greater vulnerability, and (2) the most recent advancements in nanoscale embolism processes suggest that vessel diameter is not a direct driver. Here, we review data from physiological and comparative wood anatomy studies, highlighting the potential anatomical and physicochemical drivers of embolism formation and spread. We then put forward key knowledge gaps, emphasising what is known, unknown and speculation. A meaningful evaluation of the diameter-vulnerability link will require a better mechanistic understanding of the biophysical processes at the nanoscale level that determine embolism formation and spread, which will in turn lead to more accurate predictions of how water transport in plants is affected by drought.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the radiographic outcomes of implants after osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE), and further identify the separate predictors for these radiographic outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, a total of 187 implants were inserted into 138 patients using the OSFE technique. Seventy-four patients in the grafted group, and 64 patients in the non-grafted group completed this study. The vertical bone gain (VBG) and marginal bone loss (MBL) at 3 years following surgery were assessed as outcome variables. Based on extensive literature results, variables considered potential predictors of outcome variables included sex, age, tooth position, implant length, implant diameter, with or without grafting materials, residual bone height, sinus width, bone density, and sinus membrane thickness. Subsequently, the binary logistic regression analysis was applied with VBG and MBL as dependent variables, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) with its area under the curve (AUC) was performed to further determine the predictive value of these predictors. RESULTS: One hundred and six implants in grafted group and 81 implants in the non-grafted group were analyzed. The average VBG was 2.12 ± 1.94 mm for the grafted group and 0.44 ± 1.01 mm for the non-grafted group at 3 years (P < 0.05). The mean MBL was 1.54 ± 1.42 mm for the grafted group and 1.13 ± 1.69 mm for the non-grafted group at 3 years (P > 0.05). After the adjustment for confounders, logistic regression analysis demonstrated that implant length, grafting, residual bone height, and sinus membrane thickness were predictors of VBG. The odds ratio for VBG was 3.90, 4.04, 4.13 and 2.62, respectively. Furthermore, grafting exhibited the largest AUC at 0.80. While tooth position and implant length were predictors of MBL, the odds ratio for MBL was 3.27 and 7.85, respectively. Meanwhile, implant length exhibited the largest AUC at 0.72. CONCLUSIONS: OSFE with or without simultaneous grafting materials both showed predictable clinical outcomes. Additionally, the present study is the first quantitative and significant verification that VBG has a significant association with sinus membrane thickness, as well as residual bone height, implant length and grafting. Whereas tooth position and implant length are markedly associated with MBL.

BACKGROUND: Hematuria is a common problem in pediatric practice and necessitates exhausting studies to detect etiology and establish proper management and counselling. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the clinical and pathological findings in 95 children presented between 2013 and 2019 with gross or microscopic hematuria with or without proteinuria in whom non-glomerular causes were excluded. In addition, a reference range for normal glomerular basement membrane thickness (GBMT) is introduced based on the assessment of biopsies of 20 steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome cases aged 3-15 years, and with minimal change pathology. RESULTS: Fifty-seven males and 38 females with a mean age of 7.72 ± 3.27 years were included. Recurrent gross hematuria was the most frequent presentation (42%) while accidentally discovered hematuria was reported in 34.7% of patients. Alport syndrome (AS) was the most frequent diagnosis (66.3%) followed by thin basement membrane disease (TBMD) (29.5%) and Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) (4%). A reference for normal GBMT was 360.3 ± 87.5 nm which is comparable to published references. Males with AS had a higher incidence of progression to renal failure and requirement for dialysis (p = 0.006 and 0.03, respectively) compared to females. Persistent proteinuria and lower glomerular filtration rate at diagnosis were associated with poor outcomes (p < 0.001 each). CONCLUSION: Alport Syndrome is the most common cause of glomerular hematuria in Egyptian children. Persistence of proteinuria and lower GFR at initial presentation were the main predictors of poor outcomes. The establishment of GBMT reference range for each locality is mandatory for the proper diagnosis of such cases.

In order to establish cancer-type-specific electroporation protocols for breast cancer, electroporation was performed in vitro in two modalities: in-suspension and adhered cells. Electroporation of cell suspensions was carried out through commercial electroporation cuvettes whereas a novel electrode for electroporation of adhered cells was designed and manufactured aimed to preserve cell structure, to provide a closer model to an in vivo scenario, and as a means to visualize the mechanical effects of electroporation on the cell membrane by using scanning electron microscopy. Electroporation protocols and electric field thresholds were predicted in silico and experimentally tuned through propidium iodide uptake and cell viability. Three breast-cancer cell lines (BT-20, MCF-7 and HCC1419) and a non-cancerous cell line (BEAS-2B) were used. Cancerous cells responded differently to electroporation depending on the electric parameters, cell histology, the cell culture modality, and the cell morphology (membrane thickness mainly), which was evaluated trough confocal and transmission electron microscopy. Particularly, it was found that electrochemotherapy may represent a promising alternative as an adjuvant treatment of metastatic breast tumours, and as a neoadjuvant therapy for Her2/neu tumours. Oppositely, triple negative breast tumours may show a high sensitivity to electroporation and therefore, they could be efficiently treated with irreversible electroporation. On the other hand, noncancerous cells demanded the highest voltage in both cell culture modalities in order to be electroporated. Hence, these cells in suspension may provide a reliable, easy-to-perform, low-cost model for the development of electroporation protocols for eradication of healthy tissue around a tumour in a safety margin.

The evolution of xylem vessels from tracheids is put forward as a key innovation that boosted hydraulic conductivity and photosynthetic capacities in angiosperms. Yet, the role of xylem anatomy and interconduit pits in hydraulic performance across vesselless and vessel-bearing angiosperms is incompletely known, and there is a lack of functional comparisons of ultrastructural pits between species with different conduit types. We assessed xylem hydraulic conductivity and vulnerability to drought-induced embolism in 12 rain forest species from New Caledonia, including five vesselless species, and seven vessel-bearing species with scalariform perforation plates. We measured xylem conduit traits, along with ultrastructural features of the interconduit pits, to assess the relationships between conduit traits and hydraulic efficiency and safety. In spite of major differences in conduit diameter, conduit density, and the presence/absence of perforation plates, the species studied showed similar hydraulic conductivity and vulnerability to drought-induced embolism, indicating functional similarity between both types of conduits. Interconduit pit membrane thickness (Tm) was the only measured anatomical feature that showed a relationship to significant vulnerability to embolism. Our results suggest that the incidence of drought in rain forest ecosystems can have similar effects on species bearing water-conducting cells with different morphologies.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) interact directly with bacterial membrane lipids. Thus, changes in the lipid composition of bacterial membranes can have profound effects on the activity of AMPs. In order to understand the effect of bilayer thickness and molecular order on the activity of AMPs, the interaction of maculatin 1.1 (Mac1.1) with phosphatidylcholine (PC) model membranes composed of different monounsaturated acyl chain lengths between 14 and 22 carbons was characterised by dual polarisation interferometry (DPI) and 31P and 1H solid-state NMR techniques. The thickness and bilayer order of each PC bilayer showed a linear dependence on the acyl chain length. The binding of Mac1.1 exhibited a biphasic dependency between the amount of bound Mac1.1 and bilayer thickness, whereby the mass of bound peptide increased from C14 to C16 and then decreased from C16 to C22. Significant perturbation of 31P chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) values was only observed for DOPC (C18) and DEPC (C22), respectively. In the case of DEPC, the greater range in CSA indicated different headgroup conformations or environments in the presence of Mac1.1. Overall, the results indicated that there is a significant change in the bilayer order upon binding of Mac1.1 and this change occurred in a co-operative manner at higher concentrations of Mac1.1 with increasing bilayer thickness and order. Overall, an optimum bilayer thickness and lipid order may be required for effective membrane perturbation by Mac1.1 and increasing the bilayer thickness and order may counteract the activity of Mac1.1 and play a role in antimicrobial resistance to AMPs.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term changes in the thickness of Schneiderian membranes after zygomatic implant placement using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients were included in this study. All the patients underwent bilateral zygomatic implant placement. Schneiderian membrane thickness (SMT) in 49 maxillary sinuses (one sinus was not included because of early loss of the zygomatic implants) was measured using CBCT before and at least 1 year after zygomatic implant placement. Ostium patency of each sinus was also evaluated and recorded. RESULTS: In total, 84 zygomatic implants and 30 regular implants were placed in included patients. Two unilateral maxillary zygomatic implants in one patient were removed 2 months after implant placement. The SMT increased from 1.03 mm (inter-quartile range: 1.57 mm) to 1.33 mm (inter-quartile range: 1.98 mm) after a median follow-up time of 23.00 months (inter-quartile range: 14 months), and the difference was statistically significant. Before zygomatic implant insertion, 24.5% (12/49) of sinuses had SMT greater than 2 mm, whereas this value was 28.6% (14/49) after zygomatic implant placement. The percentage of sinuses observed with ostium patency also increased from 2.0% (1/49) to 12.2% (6/49). CONCLUSIONS: Chronic Schneiderian membrane thickening could result from zygomatic implant insertion. Intensive postoperative care and clinical and radiographic monitoring are recommended after zygomatic implant placement.

RESUMO

The lipid bilayer component of biological membranes is important for the distribution, organization, and function of bilayer spanning proteins. These physical barriers are subjected to bilayer perturbations. As a consequence, nature has evolved proteins that are able to sense changes in the bilayer properties and transform these lipid-mediated stimuli into intracellular signals. A structural feature that most signal-transducing membrane-embedded proteins have in common is one or more α-helices that traverse the lipid bilayer. Because of the interaction with the surrounding lipids, the organization of these transmembrane helices will be sensitive to membrane properties, like hydrophobic thickness. The helices may adapt to the lipids in different ways, which in turn can influence the structure and function of the intact membrane proteins. We review recent insights into the molecular basis of thermosensing via changes in membrane thickness and consider examples in which the hydrophobic matching can be demonstrated using reconstituted membrane systems. OBJECTIVE: To determine how prenatal ultrasound measurements of dividing membrane thickness correlate with postnatal histological measurements and chorionicity in twin gestations. METHODS: This was a prospective, longitudinal cohort study of twin gestations. Dividing membrane thickness was measured by transabdominal ultrasound, with the insonation beam both parallel and perpendicular to the membrane, in the second or third trimester, depending on when care was established. Ultrasound examinations were performed every 4 weeks following initial assessment until delivery. Measurements of membrane thickness from the first ultrasound examination were compared with histological measurements after delivery. RESULTS: A total of 45 twin pregnancies (32 dichorionic, 13 monochorionic) were included. Mean gestational age at initial ultrasound examination was 24.1 ± 7.3 weeks. Parallel ultrasound measurements of membrane thickness were 1.6 ± 0.8 mm for monochorionic and 2.5 ± 0.9 mm for dichorionic gestations (P = 0.001). Perpendicular ultrasound measurements were 1.6 ± 0.3 mm for monochorionic and 2.2 ± 0.8 mm for dichorionic gestations (P = 0.009). Inter- and intraobserver reliability of ultrasound measurements were 0.847 and 0.950, respectively. Parallel and perpendicular ultrasound measurements correlated better with each other (R = 0.807, P < 0.001) than with histological measurements of membrane thickness (Rparallel = 0.538, P < 0.001; Rperpendicular = 0.529, P < 0.001). Receiver-operating characteristics curve analyses to predict histological membrane thickness > 50th percentile resulted in an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.828 for parallel (P < 0.001) and 0.874 for perpendicular (P < 0.001) measurements with a cut-off value of 1.9 mm for both approaches. The AUCs for parallel and perpendicular measurements to predict dichorionicity were 0.892 (P < 0.001) and 0.823 (P < 0.001) with cut-off values of 1.9 and 1.8 mm, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prenatal ultrasound measurement of twin dividing membrane thickness is positively correlated with postnatal histological measurement. Dichorionicity can be determined by a magnified dividing membrane thickness ≥ 1.9 mm. Measurements with the ultrasound beam parallel to the dividing membrane may be more accurate than perpendicular measurements. Copyright © 2016 ISUOG. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: We investigated the significance of microangiopathy in the development of foot ulcer, which is still disputed. METHODS: We assessed microangiopathy by histological analysis of the capillary ultrastructure using transmission electron microscopy and capillary density and arteriolar morphology in paraffin-embedded sections from the skin of type 2 diabetic patients: 30 neuroischaemic patients (Isc) revascularised with peripheral angioplasty and 30 neuropathic patients (Neu) with foot ulcer, compared with ten non-diabetic volunteers. RESULTS: In the diabetic patients, capillaries in the dermal papillary layer were fewer (-22.2%, 159 ± 43 vs 205 ± 52 mm(2) in non-diabetic volunteers, p < 0.01). They also showed detrimental remodelling, with a 2.2-fold increase in capillary basement membrane thickness (3.44 ± 1.19 vs 1.53 ± 0.34 µm in non-diabetic volunteers, p < 0.001) and a 57.7% decrease in lumen area (14.6 ± 11.1 vs 34.7 ± 27.5 µm(2), p < 0.001). No differences were observed between the diabetic Isc or Neu patients. Isc were more prone to develop arteriolar occlusion than Neu (16.8 ± 6.9% vs 6.7 ± 3.7%, respectively, p < 0.001). No patient had been amputated at 30 days and healing time was significantly longer in Isc (180 ± 120 vs 64 ± 50 days in Neu, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Capillary microangiopathy is present in equal measure in neuroischaemic and neuropathic diabetic foot skin. The predominance of arteriolar occlusions with neuroischaemia indicated the existence of an additional 'small vessel disease' that did not affect an effective revascularisation and did not worsen the prognosis of major amputations but slowed the healing process of the neuroischaemic foot ulcer. Biomimetic polymer nanocompartments (polymersomes) with preserved architecture and ion-selective membrane permeability represent cutting-edge mimics of cellular compartmentalization. Here it is studied whether the membrane thickness affects the functionality of ionophores in respect to the transport of Ca2+ ions in synthetic membranes of polymersomes, which are up to 2.6 times thicker than lipid membranes (5 nm). Selective permeability toward calcium ions is achieved by proper insertion of ionomycin, and demonstrated by using specific fluorescence markers encapsulated in their inner cavities. Preservation of polymersome architecture is shown by a combination of light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. By using a combination of stopped-flow and fluorescence spectroscopy, it is shown that ionomycin can function and transport calcium ions across polymer membranes with thicknesses in the range 10.7-13.4 nm (7.1-8.9 times larger than the size of the ionophore). Thicker membranes induce a decrease in transport, but do not block it due to the intrinsic flexibility of these synthetic membranes. The design of ion selective biomimetic nanocompartments represents a new path toward the development of cellular ion nanosensors and nano-reactors, in which calcium sensitive biomacromolecules can be triggered for specific biological functions.

OBJECTIVES: Schneiderian membrane perforation is one of the main complications during sinus augmentation. The reasons may be associated with surgical technique, septum, inadequate ridge height, and membrane thickness. However, reports that used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to quantify the thickness of sinus membrane were limited. The aims of this retrospective study were: to study the correlation between membrane thickness and perforation rate during transcrestal sinus lift and to propose a classification system of sinus membrane thickness based upon CBCT data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two subjects who received dental implant restorations over posterior maxilla with a total of 185 transcrestal sinus lift procedures between years 2010 to 2013 were selected consequently. Each patient selected had to have taken CBCT in the initial examination and immediately after surgery. The membrane thickness, perforation rate, residual bone height, and elevated bone height were recorded and processed for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean thickness of the Schneiderian membrane was 1.78 ± 1.99 mm. There was a significant correlation between membrane thickness and perforation rate (P < 0.05), and the perforation rate was higher in thicker (≥3 mm) and thinner membrane (≤0.5 mm). Among the thickness group, Class B (between ≥1 and <2 mm) had the lowest perforation rate. No significant difference was between the perforation and the membrane morphology. A negative relationship between residual bone height and membrane thickness was found. Trend showed that in the thicker and the thinner residual bone height, the higher the perforation rate would be. CONCLUSIONS: There was a significant correlation between membrane thickness and perforation rate. The perforation rate was lowest when the thickness was 1.5-2 mm.

OBJECTIVE: To determine, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), the residual ridge height (RRH), sinus floor membrane thickness (MT), and ostium patency (OP) in patients being evaluated for implant placement in the posterior maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT scans of 128 patients (199 sinuses) with ≥1 missing teeth in the posterior maxilla were examined. RRH and MT corresponding to each edentulous site were measured. MT >2 mm was considered pathological and categorized by degree of thickening (2-5, 5-10 mm, and >10 mm). Mucosal appearance was classified as "normal", "flat thickening", or "polypoid thickening", and OP was classified as "patent" or "obstructed". Descriptive and bivariate statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: MT >2 mm was observed in 60.6% patients and 53.6% sinuses. Flat and polypoid mucosal thickening had a prevalence of 38.1% and 15.5%, respectively. RRH ≤4 mm was observed in 46.9% and 48.9% of edentulous first and second molar sites, respectively. Ostium obstruction was observed in 13.1% sinuses and was associated with MT of 2-5 mm (6.7%), 5-10 mm (24%), and >10 mm (35.3%, P < 0.001). Polypoid mucosal lesions were more frequently associated with ostium obstruction than flat thickenings (26.7% vs. 17.6%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Thickened sinus membranes (>2 mm) and reduced residual ridge heights (≤4 mm) were highly prevalent in this sample of patients with missing posterior maxillary teeth. Membrane thickening >5 mm, especially of a polypoid type, is associated with an increased risk for ostium obstruction. In the presence of these findings, an ENT referral may be beneficial prior to implant-related sinus floor elevation.
