RESUMO

The discovery of more than 200 gas-phase chemical compounds in interstellar space has led to the speculation that this nonterrestrial synthesis may play a role in the origin of life. These identifications were possible because of laboratory spectroscopy, which provides the molecular fingerprints for astronomical observations. Interstellar chemistry produces a wide range of small, organic molecules in dense clouds, such as NH2COCH3, CH3OCH3, CH3COOCH3, and CH2(OH)CHO. Carbon (C) is also carried in the fullerenes C60 and C70, which can preserve C-C bonds from circumstellar environments for future synthesis. Elusive phosphorus has now been found in molecular clouds, the sites of star formation, in the molecules PO and PN. Such clouds can collapse into solar systems, although the chemical/physical processing of the emerging planetary disk is uncertain. The presence of molecule-rich interstellar starting material, as well as the link to planetary bodies such as meteorites and comets, suggests that astrochemical processes set a prebiotic foundation.

RESUMO

In this study, we present a novel platform based on scanning microwave microscopy for manipulating and detecting tiny vibrations of nanoelectromechanical resonators using a single metallic tip. The tip is placed on the top of a grounded silicon nitride membrane, acting as a movable top gate of the coupled resonator. We demonstrate its ability to map mechanical modes and investigate mechanical damping effects in a capacitive coupling scheme, based on its spatial resolution. We also manipulate the energy transfer coherently between the mode of the scanning tip and the underlying silicon nitride membrane, via parametric coupling. Typical features of optomechanics, such as anti-damping and electromechanically induced transparency, have been observed. Since the microwave optomechanical technology is fully compatible with quantum electronics and very low temperature conditions, it should provide a powerful tool for studying phonon tunnelling between two spatially separated vibrating elements, which could potentially be applied to quantum sensing.

RESUMO

The superconducting coplanar waveguide (SCPW) cavity plays an essential role in various areas like superconducting qubits, parametric amplifiers, radiation detectors, and studying magnon-photon and photon-phonon coupling. Despite its wide-ranging applications, the use of SCPW cavities to study various van der Waals 2D materials has been relatively unexplored. The resonant modes of the SCPW cavity exquisitely sense the dielectric environment. In this work, we measure the charge compressibility of bilayer graphene coupled to a half-wavelength SCPW cavity. Our approach provides a means to detect subtle changes in the capacitance of the bilayer graphene heterostructure, which depends on the compressibility of bilayer graphene, manifesting as shifts in the resonant frequency of the cavity. This method holds promise for exploring a wide class of van der Waals 2D materials, including transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and their moiré, where DC transport measurement is challenging.

RESUMO

Microwave-absorbing materials with regulatable absorption frequency and optical camouflage hold great significance in intelligent electronic devices and advanced stealth technology. Herein, we present an innovative microwave-absorbing foam that can dynamically tune microwave absorption frequencies via a simple mechanical compression while in parallel enabling optical camouflage over broad spectral ranges by adjusting the structural colors. The vivid colors spanning different color categories generated from thin-film interference can be precisely regulated by adjusting the thickness of the conformal TiO2 coatings on Ni/melamine foam. Enhanced interfacial and defect-induced polarizations resulting from the introduction of TiO2 coating synergistically contribute to the dielectric attenuation performance. Consequently, such a foam exhibits exceptional microwave absorption capabilities, and the absorption frequency can be dynamically tuned from the S band to the Ku band by manipulating its compression ratio. Additionally, simulation calculations validate the adjustable electromagnetic wave loss behavior, offering valuable insights for the development of next-generation intelligent electromagnetic devices across diverse fields.

RESUMO

Hybridizing a microwave mode with a quantum state requires precise frequency matching of a superconducting microwave resonator and the corresponding quantum object. However, fabrication always brings imperfections in geometry and material properties, causing deviations from the desired operating frequencies. An effective and universal strategy for their resonant coupling is to tune the frequency of a resonator, as quantum states like phonons are hardly tunable. Here, we demonstrate gate-tunable, titanium-nitride (TiN)-based superconducting resonators by implementing a nanowire inductor whose kinetic inductance is tuned via the gate-controlled supercurrent (GCS) effect. We investigate their responses for different gate biases and observe 4% (∼150 MHz) frequency tuning with decreasing internal quality factors. We also perform temperature-controlled experiments to support phonon-related mechanisms in the GCS effect and the resonance tuning. The GCS effect-based method proposed in this study provides an effective route for locally tunable resonators that can be employed in various hybrid quantum devices.

RESUMO

We implement circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) with quantum dots in bilayer graphene, a maturing material platform that can host long-lived spin and valley states. Our device combines a high-impedance (Zr ≈ 1 kΩ) superconducting microwave resonator with a double quantum dot electrostatically defined in a graphene-based van der Waals heterostructure. Electric dipole coupling between the subsystems allows the resonator to sense the electric susceptibility of the double quantum dot from which we reconstruct its charge stability diagram. We achieve sensitive and fast detection of the interdot transition with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.5 within 1 µs integration time. The charge-photon interaction is quantified in the dispersive and resonant regimes by comparing the resonator response to input-output theory, yielding a coupling strength of g/2π = 49.7 MHz. Our results introduce cQED as a probe for quantum dots in van der Waals materials and indicate a path toward coherent charge-photon coupling with bilayer graphene quantum dots.

RESUMO

Voltage-controlled oscillators, serving as fundamental components in semiconductor chips, find extensive applications in diverse modules such as phase-locked loops, clock generators, and frequency synthesizers within high-frequency integrated circuits. This study marks the first implementation of superconducting Josephson probe microscopy for near-field microwave detection on multiple voltage-controlled oscillators. Focusing on spectrum tracking, various phenomena, such as stray spectra and frequency drifts, were found under nonsteady operating states. Parasitic electromagnetic fields, originating from power supply lines and frequency divider circuits, were identified as sources of interference between units. The investigation further determined optimal working states by analyzing features of the microwave distributions. Our research not only provides insights into the optimization of circuit design and performance enhancement in oscillators but also emphasizes the significance of nondestructive near-field microwave microscopy as a pivotal tool in characterizing integrated millimeter-wave chips.

RESUMO

Modern studies on binding of proteins to glycans commonly involve the use of synthetic glycans and their derivatives in which a small amount of the material is covalently printed onto a functionalized slide in a glycan microarray format. While incredibly useful to explore binding interactions with many types of samples, the common techniques involve drying the slides, which leads to irreversible association of the protein to the spots on slides to which they bound, thus limiting a microarray to a single use. We have developed a new technique which we term Microwave Assisted Wet-Erase (MAWE) glycan microarrays. In this approach we image the slides under wet conditions to acquire the data, after which the slides are cleaned of binding proteins by treatment with a denaturing SDS solution along with microwave treatment. Slides cleaned in this way can be reused multiple times, and an example here shows the reuse of a single array 15 times. We also demonstrate that this method can be used for a single-array per slide or multi-array per slide platforms. Importantly, the results obtained using this technique for a variety of lectins sequentially applied to a single array, are concordant to those obtained via the classical dry approaches on multiple slides. We also demonstrate that MAWE can be used for different types of samples, such as serum for antibody binding, and whole cells, such as yeast. This technique will greatly conserve precious glycans and prolong the use of existing and new glycan microarrays.

RESUMO

Although microwave ablation (MWA) is an important curative therapy in colorectal cancer liver metastasis, recurrence still occurs clinically. Our previous studies have shown that the expression of programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) is upregulated following MWA, suggesting that MWA combined with anti-PD-L1 treatment can serve as a promising clinical therapeutic strategy against cancer. Using MWA-treated preclinical mice models, MWA combined with αPD-L1 treatment decreased tumor growth and prolonged overall survival (OS). Furthermore, through flow cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing analysis, we determined that the MWA plus αPD-L1 therapy significantly suppressed CD8+ T cell exhaustion and enhanced their effector function. A significant increase in γ-interferon (IFN-γ) stimulated transcription factors, specifically Irf8, was observed. This enhancement facilitated the polarization of tumor-associated macrophages (TAM1s and TAM2s) through the nuclear factor-κB/JAK-STAT1 signaling pathway. Furthermore, the combination therapy stimulated the production of CXC motif chemokine ligand (CXCL9) by TAM1s and tumor cells, potentially increasing the chemotaxis of CD8 T cells and Th1 cells. Knocking out Cxcl9 in MC38 tumor cells or using CXCL9 blockade enhanced tumor growth of untreated tumors and shortened OS. Taken together, our study showed that blocking the IFN-γ-Cxcl9-CD8+ T axis promoted tumor progression and discovered a potential involvement of IRF8-regulated TAMs in preventing T cell exhaustion. Collectively, we identified that the combination of MWA with anti-PD-L1 treatment holds promise as a therapeutic strategy to rejuvenate the immune response against tumors. This merits further exploration in clinical studies.

RESUMO

Despite the success of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in treating solid tumors, lots of patients remain unresponsive to this therapy. Microwave ablation (MWA) stimulates systemic adaptive immunity against tumor cells by releasing tumor antigens. Additionally, IL-21 has demonstrated importance in stimulating T-cell effector function. The combination of these three therapies-MWA, IL-21, and anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs)-has yet to be explored in the context of cancer treatment. In this study, we explored the impact of thermal ablation on IL-21R expression in tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Subsequently, we assessed alterations in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and peripheral lymphoid organs. Additionally, we conducted a thorough examination of tumor-infiltrating CD45+ immune cells across various treatment groups using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). Moreover, we determined the potential anti-tumor effects of the triple combination involving MWA, IL-21, and anti-PD-1 mAbs.Our findings revealed that MWA upregulated the expression of IL-21R on various immune cells in the untreated tumors. The combination of MWA with IL-21 exhibited a robust abscopal anti-tumor effect, enhancing the effector function of CD8+ T cells and facilitating dendritic cells' maturation and antigen presentation in the untreated tumor. Notably, the observed abscopal anti-tumor effect resulting from the combination is contingent upon T-cell recirculation, indicating the reliance of systemic adaptive immunity for this treatment regimen. Additionally, the combination of MWA, IL-21, and PD-1 mAbs demonstrated profound abscopal anti-tumor efficacy. Our findings provide support for further clinical investigation into a triple combination therapy involving MWA, IL-21, and ICIs for the treatment of metastatic cancer.

RESUMO

Borophene, a 2D material exhibiting unique crystallographic phases like the anisotropic atomic lattices of ß12 and X3 phases, has attracted considerable attention due to its intriguing Dirac nature and metallic attributes. Despite surpassing graphene in electronic mobility, borophene's potential in energy storage and catalysis remains untapped due to its inherent electrochemical and catalytic limitations. Elemental doping emerges as a promising strategy to introduce charge carriers, enabling localized electrochemical and catalytic functionalities. However, effective doping of borophene has been a complex and underexplored challenge. Here, an innovative, one-pot microwave-assisted doping method, tailored for the ß12 phase of borophene is introduced. By subjecting dispersed ß12 borophene in dimethylformamide to controlled microwave exposure with sulfur powder and FeCl3 as doping precursors, S- and Fe doping in borophene can be controlled. Employing advanced techniques including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, confirm successful sulfur and iron dopant incorporation onto ß12 borophene is confirmed, achieving doping levels of up to 11 % and 13 %, respectively. Remarkably, S- and Fe-doped borophene exhibit exceptional supercapacitive behavior, with specific capacitances of 202 and 120 F g-1, respectively, at a moderate current density of 0.25 A g-1.

RESUMO

Monoelemental atomic sheets (Xenes) and other 2D materials offer record electronic mobility, high thermal conductivity, excellent Young's moduli, optical transparency, and flexural capability, revolutionizing ultrasensitive devices and enhancing performance. The ideal synthesis of these quantum materials should be facile, fast, scalable, reproducible, and green. Microwave expansion followed by cryoquenching (MECQ) leverages thermal stress in graphite to produce high-purity graphene within minutes. MECQ synthesis of graphene is reported at 640 and 800 W for 10 min, followed by liquid nitrogen quenching for 5 and 90 min of sonication. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses confirmed the chemical identity and phase purity of monolayers and few-layered graphene sheets (200-12 µm). Higher microwave power yields thinner layers with enhanced purity. Molecular dynamics simulations and DFT calculations support the exfoliation under these conditions. Electrostatic droplet switching is demonstrated using MECQ-synthesized graphene, observing electrorolling of a mercury droplet on a BN/graphene interface at voltages above 20 V. This technique can inspire the synthesis of other 2D materials with high purity and enable new applications.

RESUMO

Antibiotics are frequently used to clinically treat osteomyelitis caused by bacterial infections. However, extended antibiotic use may result in drug resistance, which can be life threatening. Here, a heterojunction comprising Fe2O3/Fe3S4 magnetic composite is constructed to achieve short-term and efficient treat osteomyelitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The Fe2O3/Fe3S4 composite exhibits powerful microwave (MW) absorption properties, thereby effectively converting incident electromagnetic energy into thermal energy. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that Fe2O3/Fe3S4 possesses significant charge accumulation and oxygen-fixing capacity at the heterogeneous interface, which provides more active sites and oxygen sources for trapping electromagnetic hotspots. The finite element analysis indicates that Fe2O3/Fe3S4 displays a larger electromagnetism field enhancement parameter than Fe2O3 owing to a significant increase in electromagnetic hotspots. These hotspots contribute to charge differential accumulation and depletion motions at the interface, thereby augmenting the release of free electrons that subsequently combine with the oxygen adsorbed by Fe2O3/Fe3S4 to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and heat. This research, which achieves extraordinary bacterial eradication through the synergistic effect of microwave thermal therapy (MWTT) and microwave dynamic therapy (MDT), presents a novel strategy for treating deep-tissue bacterial infections.

RESUMO

Morphology regulation and composition design have proved to be effective strategies for the fabrication of desirable microwave absorbers. However, it is still challenging to precisely control the microstructure and components of MAX phases. Herein, an entropy-driven approach, a transition from irregular grains (low entropy) to sheet structure (high entropy), is proposed to modulate the morphology of MAX phases. The theoretical calculation indicates that the morphology evolution can be ascribed to the enlarged energy difference between (11_00) and (0001) facets. The enriched structural defects and optimized morphologies yield significant dipolar polarization, interfacial polarization, multiple reflections, and scattering, which all enhance the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of (V0.25 Ti0.25 Cr0.25 Mo0.25 )2 GaC. Specifically, its minimum reflection loss can reach up to -47.12 dB at 12.13 GHz, and the optimal effective absorption bandwidth is 4.56 GHz (2.03 mm). Meanwhile, (V0.25 Ti0.25 Cr0.25 Mo0.25 )2 GaC shows also pronounced thermal insulation properties affording it good reliability in the harsh working environment. This work offers a novel approach to designing and regulating the morphology of the high entropy MAX phase, and also presents an opportunity to elucidate the relationship between entropy and electromagnetic wave absorption performance.

RESUMO

It is an urgent problem to realize reliable microwave absorption materials (MAMs) with low density. To address this issue, a series of controlled experiments w ere carried out, which indicated that the tubular structure enables excellent microwave absorption properties with a lower powder filling rate. This performance is attributable to the combined dielectric and magnetic loss mechanisms provided by Co/C and the interface polarization facilitated by multiple heterogeneous interfaces. Particularly, Co@C nanotubes, benefiting from the enhanced heterointerface polarization due to their abundant specific surface area and the reduced electron migration barrier induced by their 1D stacked structure, effectively achieved a dual enhancement of dielectric loss and polarization loss at lower powder filling ratios. Furthermore, the magnetic coupling effect of magnetic nanoparticle arrays in tubular structures is demonstrated by micromagnetic simulation, which have been few reported elsewhere. These propertied enable Co@C nanotubes to achieve minimum reflection loss and maximum effective absorption broadband values of 61.0 dB and 5.5 GHz, respectively, with a powder filling ratio of 20 wt% and a thickness of 1.94 mm. This study reveals the significance of designing 1D structures in reducing powder filling ratio and matching thickness, providing valuable insights for developing MAMs with different microstructures.

RESUMO

Osteomyelitis caused by deep tissue infections is difficult to cure through phototherapy due to the poor penetration depth of the light. Herein, Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH nanorod composites (Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH) with nanoscale tip convex structures are successfully fabricated as a microwave-responsive smart bacteria-capture-killing vector. Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH exhibited excellent magnetic targeting and bacteria-capturing ability due to its magnetism and high selectivity affinity to the amino groups on the surface of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Under microwave irradiation, Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH efficiently treated S. aureus-infected osteomyelitis through the synergistic effects of microwave thermal therapy, microwave dynamic therapy, and copper ion therapy. It is calculated the electric field intensity in various regions of Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH under microwave irradiation, demonstrating that it obtained the highest electric field intensity on the surface of copper nanoparticles of Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH due to its high-curvature tips and metallic properties. This led to copper nanoparticles attracted more charged particles compared with other areas in Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH. These charges are easier to escape from the high curvature surface of Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH, and captured by adsorbed oxygen, resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species. The Cu/C/Fe3O4-COOH designed in this study is expected to provide insight into the treatment of deep tissue infections under the irradiation of microwave.

RESUMO

Highly efficient electromagnetic wave (EMW)-absorbing multicomposites can be fabricated by constructing particular structures using suitable components. Expanded graphite (EG) has a 3D, low-density porous structure; however, it suffers from poor impedance matching and EMW absorption properties. Based on this information, in the present study, NiCo2S4 components with different morphologies are successfully loaded onto a 3D EG surface using a facile microwave solvothermal method to achieve a synergistic effect between the different components. The NiCo2S4 content is adjusted to alter the compositional morphology and electromagnetic parameters of the composites to achieve impedance-matching and obtain excellent EMW absorption properties. The heterogeneous interface between EG and NiCo2S4 induces an inhomogeneous spatial charge distribution and enhances interfacial polarization. The defects in the material and oxygen-containing groups induce dipole polarization, which enhances the polarization-relaxation process of the composites. The 3D porous heterostructure of the "Fibonacci cauliflower"-shaped NiCo2S4/EG composites results in an optimal reflection loss of -64.93 dB at a filler rate of only 14 wt.%. Analysis of the synergistic conduction loss and polarization loss mechanisms in carbon-based materials with heterogeneous interfaces has led to the development of excellent EMW absorption materials.

RESUMO

Infrared and radar detectors posed substantial challenges to weapon equipment and personnel due to their continuous surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. Traditional single-band stealth devices are insufficient for dual-band detection in both infrared and microwave bands. To overcome this limitation, a gradient-structured MXene/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite aerogel (GMXrGA) is fabricated through a two-step bidirectional freeze casting process, followed by freeze-drying and thermal annealing. GMXrGA exhibits a distinct three-layered structure, with each layer playing a crucial role in microwave absorption. This deliberate design amplifies both the efficiency of microwave absorption and the material's effectiveness in dynamic infrared camouflage. GMXrGA displays an ultralow density of 5.2 mg∙cm-3 and demonstrates exceptional resistance to compression, enduring 200 cycles at a maximum strain of 80%. Moreover, it shows superior microwave absorption performance, with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -60.1 dB at a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 14.1 GHz (3.9-18.0 GHz). Additionally, the aerogel exhibits low thermal conductivity (≈26 mW∙m-1∙K-1) and displays dynamic infrared camouflage capabilities within the temperature range of 50-120 °C, achieving rapid concealment within 30 s. Consequently, they hold great potential for diverse applications, including intelligent buildings, wearable electronics, and weapon equipment.

RESUMO

Interface design has enormous potential for the enhancement of interfacial polarization and microwave absorption properties. However, the construction of interfaces is always limited in components of a single dimension. Developing systematic strategies to customize multidimensional interfaces and fully utilize advantages of low-dimensional materials remains challenging. Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have garnered significant attention owing to their distinctive electrical conductivity and exceptional interfacial effects. In this study, a series of hollow TMDCs@C fibers are synthesized via sacrificial template of CdS and confined growth of TMDCs embedded in the fibers. The complex permittivity of the hollow TMDCs@C fibers can be adjusted by tuning the content of CdS templates. Importantly, the multidimensional interfaces of the fibers contribute to elevating the microwave absorption performance. Among the hollow TMDCs@C fibers, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of the hollow MoS2@C fibers can reach -52.0 dB at the thickness of 2.5 mm, with a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 4.56 GHz at 2.0 mm. This work establishes an alternative approach for constructing multidimensional coupling interfaces and optimizing TMDCs as microwave absorption materials.

RESUMO

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-infected osteomyelitis is a deep tissue infection that cannot be effectively treated with antibiotics. Microwave (MW) thermal therapy (MTT) and MW dynamic therapy (MDT) based on MW-responsive materials are promising for the therapy of bacteria-infected osteomyelitis occurring in deep tissues that cannot be effectively treated with antibiotics. In this work, the MW-responsive system of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/Prussian blue (PB)/puerarin (Pue) with stable network-like structures is constructed. The PB is grown in situ on the CNTs, and its introduction not only reduces the aggregation of the network-like structures of the CNTs, but the large specific surface area and mesoporous structure can also provide many active sites for the adsorption of oxygen and polar molecules. Pue is a natural anti-inflammatory material that reduces inflammation at the infection site. The composite of the CNTs and PB avoids the skin effect and thus can improve dielectric and reflection losses. The MW thermal response of CNTs/PB/Pue is mainly due to the occurrence of reflection loss, dielectric loss, multiple reflections and scattering, interface polarization, and dipole polarization. In addition, under MW irradiation, the CNTs/PB/Pue can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen (1O2), hydroxyl radical (·OH).
