BACKGROUND: Only one out of every ten Nigerian adults with hypertension has their blood pressure controlled. Health worker training is essential to improve hypertension diagnosis and treatment. In-person training has limitations that mobile, on-demand training might address. This pilot study evaluated a self-paced, case-based, mobile-optimized online training to diagnose and manage hypertension for Nigerian health workers. METHODS: Twelve hypertension training modules were developed, based on World Health Organization and Nigerian guidelines. After review by local academic and government partners, the course was piloted by Nigerian health workers at government-owned primary health centers. Primary care physician, nurse, and community health worker participants completed the course on their own smartphones. Before and after the course, hypertension knowledge was evaluated with multiple-choice questions. Learners provided feedback by responding to questions on a Likert scale. RESULTS: Out of 748 users who sampled the course, 574 enrolled, of whom 431 (75%) completed the course. The average pre-test score of completers was 65.4%, which increased to 78.2% on the post-test (P < 0.001, paired t-test). Health workers who were not part of existing hypertension control programs had lower pre-test scores and larger score gains. Most participants (96.1%) agreed that the training was applicable to their work, and nearly all (99.8%) agreed that they enjoyed the training. CONCLUSIONS: An on-demand mobile digital hypertension training increases knowledge of hypertension management among Nigerian health workers. If offered at scale, such courses can be a tool to build health workforce capacity through initial and refresher training on current clinical guidelines in hypertension and other chronic diseases in Nigeria as well as other countries.

OBJECTIVE: Virtual simulation and imaging systems have evolved as advanced products of computing technology over the years. With advancements in mobile technology, smartphones, and tablets, the quality of display and processing speed have gradually improved, thanks to faster central processing units with higher capacity. Integrating these two technologies into the fields of healthcare and medical education has had a positive impact on surgical training. However, contemporary neurosurgical planning units are expensive and integrated neuronavigation systems in operating rooms require additional accessories. The aim of this study was to investigate the compatibility of smartphone applications in augmented reality (AR)-based craniotomy planning, which can be available even in disadvantaged workplaces with insufficient facilities. METHODS: Thirty patients diagnosed with supratentorial glial tumor and who underwent operations between January 2022 and March 2023 were included in the study. The entire stages of the surgical procedures and the surgical plans were executed with neuronavigation systems. The patient CT scans were reconstructed using software and exported as a 3D figure to an AR-enhanced smartphone application. The evaluation of the application's success was based on the spatial relationship of the AR-based artificial craniotomy to the neuronavigation-based craniotomy, with each AR-based craniotomy scaled from 0 to 3. RESULTS: In the comparison between neuronavigation-based and AR fusion-based craniotomies, 8 of 30 (26.6%) patients scored 0 and were considered failed, 6 (20%) scored 1 and were considered ineffective, 7 (23.3%) scored 2 and were considered acceptable, and 9 (30%) scored 3 and were considered favorable. CONCLUSIONS: AR technology has great potential to be a revolutionary milestone of neurosurgical planning, training, and education in the near future. In the authors' opinion, with the necessary legal permissions, there is no obstacle to the integration of surgical technological systems with mobile technology devices such as smartphones and tablets that benefit from their low-budget requirements, wide-range availability, and built-in operating systems.

BACKGROUND: The transmission of clinical information in nursing predominantly occurs through digital solutions, such as computers and mobile devices, in today's era. Various technological systems, including electronic health records (EHRs) and client information systems (CISs), can be seamlessly integrated with mobile devices. The use of mobile devices is anticipated to rise, particularly as long-term care is increasingly delivered in environments such as clients' homes, where computers are not readily accessible. However, there is a growing need for more user-centered data to ensure that mobile devices effectively support practical nurses in their daily activities. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze practical nurses' experiences of using EHRs or CISs on a mobile device in their daily practice. In addition, it aims to examine the factors associated with work time savings when using EHRs/CISs on a mobile device. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using an electronic survey was conducted in spring 2022. A total of 3866 practical nurses participated in the survey based on self-assessment. The sample was limited to practical nurses who used EHRs or CISs on a mobile device and worked in home care or service housing within the social welfare or health care sector (n=1014). Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the factors associated with work time savings. RESULTS: The likelihood of perceiving work time savings was higher among more experienced EHR/CIS users compared with those with less experience (odds ratio [OR] 1.59, 95% CI 1.30-1.94). Participants with 0-5 years of work experience were more likely to experience work time savings compared with those who had worked 21 years or more (OR 2.41, 95% CI 1.43-4.07). Practical nurses in home care were also more likely to experience work time savings compared with those working in service housing (OR 1.95, 95% CI 1.23-3.07). A lower grade given for EHRs/CISs was associated with a reduced likelihood of experiencing work time savings (OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.66-0.89). Participants who documented client data in a public area were more likely to experience work time savings compared with those who did so in the nurses' office (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.27-4.25). Practical nurses who found documentation of client data on a mobile device easy (OR 3.05, 95% CI 2.14-4.34) were more likely to experience work time savings compared with those who did not. Similarly, participants who believed that documentation of client data on a mobile device reduced the need to memorize things (OR 4.10, 95% CI 2.80-6.00) were more likely to experience work time savings compared with those who did not. CONCLUSIONS: To enhance the proportion of practical nurses experiencing work time savings, we recommend that organizations offer comprehensive orientation and regular education sessions tailored for mobile device users who have less experience using EHRs or CISs and find mobile devices less intuitive to use.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in treatment and early diagnosis, people with lung cancer are not living as long as those with other cancers. The more common symptoms of lung cancer, such as breathlessness, fatigue, and depression, can be alleviated by improving patients' physical functioning. Therefore, good symptom management and improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are priorities in this patient group. However, current health care services have limited capacity to provide this support. One way to address this issue of health care resources is to empower patients to self-manage their condition using eHealth technologies. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review was to identify and assess available research on technologies that support persons with lung cancer to improve or maintain their physical functioning, HRQoL, or both. METHODS: Six databases-PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, and PsycINFO-were searched from January 1, 1990, to April 30, 2023. Studies were suitable for inclusion if the participants included people with lung cancer aged >18 years who had been exposed to a physical activity, exercise, or training intervention that was delivered via an electronic or web-based application with or without a comparator. Furthermore, the study had to report on the impact of the intervention on physical functioning and HRQoL. Studies that focused on telemedicine without a digital intervention were excluded. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system was used to assess the quality of the included papers. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies, a narrative synthesis was undertaken. RESULTS: This review is reported in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A total of 794 papers were initially identified through our search, of which, after screening, 8 (1%) were confirmed suitable for inclusion in the review. As 2 (25%) of the 8 papers reported on different stages of the same study, we included only 7 studies in our analysis. The studies were undertaken between 2010 and 2018 across multiple countries and aimed to develop a technology and test its feasibility or acceptance. The 7 technologies identified included web-based applications, mobile apps, and gaming consoles. The studies demonstrated impact on walking distance, muscle strength, balance, dyspnea symptoms, and cancer-related fatigue. HRQoL scores also showed improvement. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that eHealth technologies can positively impact physical functioning and well-being for people with lung cancer, but there are limited studies that demonstrate the impact of these digital interventions over longer periods. None of the studies reported on the implementation or adoption of a mobile health or eHealth intervention in routine clinical practice, highlighting the need for further research in this area. Researchers are increasingly using web-based technologies to deliver family-based, prevention programming. Few studies have examined the success of such approaches for families with low incomes. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of in-class and online engagement in a childhood obesity prevention program for parents with low incomes, to examine the demographic correlates of parent engagement, and to examine dosage effects on parental feeding outcomes as a function of online exposure. All participants attended in-class nutrition education classes (Eating Smart · Being Active) as part of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in Colorado and Washington State (classes were offered in English and Spanish). Participants in this analysis were 168 parents from a larger cluster randomized controlled trial who had been randomly assigned to also receive a newly developed, mobile-based version of an efficacious, feeding-focused, childhood obesity prevention program. Results showed that despite high levels of in-person attendance (70%), participants only accessed 47% of the videos (online content). Older parents and parents of girls showed higher levels of in-person attendance; currently employed parents showed lower levels. Online engagement varied as a function of ethnicity and acculturation: non-Hispanic parents accessed the most videos, low-acculturated Hispanic parents accessed the second most, and highly acculturated Hispanic parents accessed the least. In contrast, low-acculturated Hispanic parents showed the highest in-person attendance. For all but one outcome, significant online program effects were found only for parents who accessed at least half of the videos. Cognitive interventions are helpful in the non-pharmacological management of Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and other neurodegenerative disorders of cognition, by helping patients to compensate for their cognitive deficits and improve their functional independence. In this study, we examined the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation based on the use of mobile device technology in PPA. The aim of this research study was to determine if BL, a patient with semantic variant PPA (svPPA) and severe anomia, was able to learn using specific smartphone functions and an application to reduce her word finding difficulties. She was trained during the intervention sessions on a list of target pictures to measure changes in picture naming performance. Errorless learning was applied during learning. BL quickly learned to use smartphone functions and the application over the course of the intervention. She significantly improved her anomia for trained pictures, and to a lesser extent for untrained semantically related pictures. Picture naming performance was maintained six months after the intervention, and she continued to use her smartphone regularly to communicate with family members and friends. This study confirms that smartphone use can be learned in PPA, which can help reduce the symptoms of anomia and improve communication skills.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a major global health issue affecting millions of children. Mitigating this problem requires up-to-date information from reliable surveillance systems. This enables evidence-based decision-making to devise oral health policies. The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates the adoption of mobile technologies in oral disease surveillance because of their efficiency and ease of application. The study describes developing an electronic, oral health surveillance system (EOHSS) for preschoolers in Egypt, using the District Health Information System (DHIS2) open-source platform along with its Android App, and assesses its feasibility in data acquisition. METHODS: The DHIS2 Server was configured for the DHIS2 Tracker Android Capture App to allow individual-level data entry. The EOHSS indicators were selected in line with the WHO Action Plan 2030. Two modalities for the EOHSS were developed based on clinical data capture: face-to-face and tele/asynchronous. Eight dentists in the pilot team collected 214 events using modality-specific electronic devices. The pilot's team's feedback was obtained regarding the EOHSS's feasibility in collecting data, and a time-motion study was conducted to assess workflow over two weeks. Independent t-test and Statistical Process Control techniques were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The pilot team reported positive feedback on the structure of the EOHSS. Workflow adaptations were made to prioritize surveillance tasks by collecting data from caregivers before acquiring clinical data from children to improve work efficiency. A shorter data capture time was required during face-to-face modality (4.2 ± 0.7 min) compared to telemodality (5.1 ± 0.9 min), p < 0.001). The acquisition of clinical data accounted for 16.9% and 21.1% of the time needed for both modalities, respectively. The time required by the face-to-face modality showed random variation, and the tele-modality tasks showed a reduced time trend to perform tasks. CONCLUSIONS: The DHIS2 provides a feasible solution for developing electronic, oral health surveillance systems. The one-minute difference in data capture time in telemodality compared to face-to-face indicates that despite being slightly more time-consuming, telemodality still shows promise for remote oral health assessments that is particularly valuable in areas with limited access to dental professionals, potentially expanding the reach of oral health screening programs.

PURPOSE: Patients with breast cancer (BC) face complex medical information and decisions. The Outcomes4Me mobile app provides evidence-based BC education, symptom management tracking and clinical trial matching. This study sought to evaluate the feasibility of introducing this app into routine BC care. METHODS: In this pilot study among BC patients undergoing therapy at an academic cancer center, patients were followed for 12 weeks with survey administration and electronic health record (EHR) abstraction at baseline and completion. Feasibility was defined as 40% of patients engaging with the app 3 or more times during the study. Additional endpoints included app usability (system usability scale), patient care experience, symptom evaluation, and clinical trial matching. RESULTS: The study enrolled 107 patients from 6/01/2020 to 3/31/2021. Utilization of the app was deemed feasible with 60% of patients engaging with the app at least 3 times. SUS score of 70 indicated above average usability. New diagnosis and higher education level was associated with greater app engagement, with usability similar across all age groups. 41% of patients found the app helped track symptoms. Cognitive and sexual symptoms were infrequently reported, but were more frequently captured in the app than in the EHR. After using the app, 33% of patients reported increased interest in clinical trial enrollment. CONCLUSION: Introducing the Outcomes4Me patient navigation app into routine BC care is feasible and may improve the patient experience. These results support further evaluation of this mobile technology platform to improve BC education, symptom management, and decision making. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a mobile health patient engagement technology (PET) on postoperative outcomes in gynecologic oncology patients. METHODS: All gynecologic oncology patients undergoing laparotomy on an enhanced recovery program (ERP) were approached from July 2019 to May 2021 to enroll in a PET, which can be accessed by computer, tablet, or smart phone. This platform provides enhanced pre- and postoperative patient education and remote patient monitoring. Patients who elected to participate were provided with targeted education based on their age and comorbidities and were asked to complete daily health checks during the postoperative period. Participants in the PET were compared to patients who opted out as well as to a historical cohort from prior to PET implementation. Patient and procedure-level factors were recorded. The primary outcomes were length of stay (LOS) and 30-day readmission rate. Analysis was performed using SPSS v.26. RESULTS: 682 women met inclusion criteria during the study time; 347 in the PET group and 335 in the control group. Demographic and other factors including race, BMI (kg/m2), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), surgical complexity, and insurance status were not different between the PET and control group; however, patients in the PET cohort were slightly younger (55.0 yo vs. 57.2 yo; p = 0.04). Patients in the PET group had a significantly shorter LOS (2.9 days vs. 3.6 days; p < 0.01) and lower readmission rate (4.3% vs. 8.6%; p < 0.01) when compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Use of a PET in our gynecologic oncology patients decreased LOS by nearly one day despite an absence of differences in other demographic and surgical factors other than age. Furthermore, there was a 50% reduction in readmission rates in the PET group. The use of a PET allows for healthcare professionals to engage, evaluate, and treat patients in a way that improves perioperative care.

Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) is a critically important complication of chronic liver disease and portal hypertension, but especially in early covert stages remains underdiagnosed and a common cause of hospitalization and morbidity. Defined by often subtle neuropsychiatric changes, significant cognitive deficits have been extensively described. While traditional methods of assessment remain underutilized in practice and subject to significant confounding with other diseases, mobile technology has emerged as a potential future tool to provide simple and dynamic cognitive assessments. This review discusses the proliferation of cognitive assessment tools, describing possible applications in encephalopathy and the challenges such an implementation may face. There are significant potential advantages to assessing cognition in real time in order to aid early detection and intervention and provide a more realistic measurement of real-world function. Despite this, there are issues with reliability, privacy, applicability and more which must be addressed prior to wide proliferation and acceptance for clinical use. Regardless, the rapid uptake of mobile technology in healthcare is likely to have significant implications for the future management of encephalopathy and liver disease at large.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental health condition among Black American women. Many factors may contribute to the development of depressive symptoms, such as gender and racial discrimination, financial strain, chronic health conditions, and caregiving responsibilities. Barriers such as the stigmatization of mental illness, less access to treatment, the lack of or inadequate health insurance, mistrust of providers, and limited health literacy prevent marginalized populations from seeking care. Previous literature has shown that mobile health interventions are effective and can increase access to mental health services and resources. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to understand the attitudes and perceptions of Black women toward using mental health services and determine the acceptability and concerns of using mobile technology (ie, voice call, video call, SMS text messaging, and mobile app) to support the management of depression. METHODS: We launched a self-administered web-based questionnaire in October 2019 and closed it in January 2020. Women (aged ≥18 years) who identify as Black or African American or multiracial (defined as Black or African American and another race) were eligible to participate. The survey consisted of approximately 70 questions and included topics such as attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, the acceptability of using a mobile phone to receive mental health care, and screening for depression. RESULTS: The findings (n=395) showed that younger Black women were more likely to have greater severity of depression than their older counterparts. The results also revealed that Black women have favorable views toward seeking mental health services. Respondents were the most comfortable with the use of voice calls or video calls to communicate with a professional to receive support for managing depression in comparison with SMS text messaging or mobile apps. The results revealed that higher help-seeking propensity increased the odds of indicating agreement with the use of voice calls and video calls to communicate with a professional to receive support for managing depression by 27% and 38%, respectively. However, no statistically significant odds ratios (all P>.05) were found between help-seeking propensity and respondents' agreement to use mobile apps or SMS text messaging. Moderate to severe depression severity increased the odds of using mobile apps to communicate with a professional to receive support for managing depression by 43%; however, no statistically significant odds ratios existed for the other modalities. Privacy and confidentiality, communication issues (eg, misinterpreting text), and the impersonal feeling of communicating by mobile phone (eg, SMS text messaging) were the primary concerns. CONCLUSIONS: Black American women, in general, have favorable views toward seeking mental health services and are comfortable with the use of mobile technology to receive support for managing depression. Future work should address the issues of access and consider the preferences and cultural appropriateness of the resources provided.

With the rise of competency-based medical education and workplace-based assessment (WBA) since the turn of the century, much has been written about methods of assessment. Direct observation and other sources of information have become standard in many clinical programs. Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) have also become a central focus of assessment in the clinical workplace. Paper and pencil (one of the earliest mobile technologies!) to document observations have become almost obsolete with the advent of digital technology. Typically, clinical supervisors are asked to document assessment ratings using forms on computers. However, accessing these forms can be cumbersome and is not easily integrated into existing clinical workflows. With a call for more frequent documentation, this practice is hardly sustainable, and mobile technology is quickly becoming indispensable. Documentation of learner performance at the point of care merges WBA with patient care and WBA increasingly uses smartphone applications for this purpose.This AMEE Guide was developed to support institutions and programs who wish to use mobile technology to implement EPA-based assessment and, more generally, any type of workplace-based assessment. It covers backgrounds of WBA, EPAs and entrustment decision-making, provides guidance for choosing or developing mobile technology, discusses challenges and describes best practices.

Background: People experiencing substance use disorders (SUD) face myriad challenges in maintaining changes in substance use after treatment. Mobile phones can play a role in supporting the recovery process. To date, research has not explored how individuals use mobile phones to seek social support as they enter SUD recovery. Objectives: We sought to understand how individuals in SUD treatment use mobile technology in support of their recovery. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with thirty individuals in treatment for any SUD in northeastern Georgia and southcentral Connecticut. Interviews explored participants' attitudes toward mobile technology and how they used mobile technology while using substances, in treatment, and in recovery. Qualitative data were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: We identified three major themes related to how participants: (1) adapted their use of mobile technology as they entered recovery, (2) relied on mobile technology for social support while in recovery, while (3) some found aspects of mobile technology triggering. Many individuals in SUD treatment reported using mobile phones to buy or sell drugs; as such, they took measures to adapt their use of mobile technology as they changed substance use behaviors. As they entered recovery, individuals relied on mobile phones for affiliational, emotional, informational, and instrumental support, though some did share they found some aspects of mobile phones triggering. Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of treatment providers engaging in conversations around mobile phone use to help individuals avoid triggers and connect with social supports. These findings uncover new opportunities for recovery support interventions utilizing mobile phones as a delivery mechanism.

OBJECTIVES: To identify and explore the experiences of health professionals towards using mobile electrocardiogram (ECG) technology. INTRODUCTION: Mobile technology is increasingly being incorporated into healthcare systems, and when implemented well, has the potential to revolutionise the way in which care is delivered. The uptake of mobile ECG technology enables health professionals to record and transmit ECGs electronically, at the point of care. It is important to explore both the impact of this technology and staff experiences to help understand how readily it is accepted and how effectively it is used in practice. There is a paucity of knowledge and understanding from primary healthcare providers and a lack of qualitative evidence offering insight into the monitoring and use of mobile ECG technology. Therefore, this review adds to the available body of knowledge by giving insight from the perspectives of health professionals on its use. METHODS: TRIP, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus and sources of grey literature were searched for eligible studies. Databases were searched from their inception dates, with a restriction on studies written in English. The results of the search are presented in a PRISMA flow diagram. Two reviewers independently screened studies and assessed methodological quality in accordance with JBI methodology for systematic reviews of qualitative evidence. Data were extracted from the included studies and meta-aggregation methodology adopted to identify categories and create synthesised findings related to the healthcare professionals' experiences. RESULTS: A total of six studies were included, which resulted in 18 findings and five categories. Three synthesised findings were generated: Quick, easy and feasible in both urban and remote settings; Increased accessibility of AF screening opportunities for all; Enhanced support in staff resources, time and technology are required. The level of confidence of synthesised findings varied from low to moderate according to ConQual. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review synthesised the experiences of healthcare professionals using mobile ECG technology. The methodological quality of the included studies was high, and findings indicated healthcare professionals (HCPs) generally found mobile ECG technology simple, quick, easy to use and non-invasive. Enablers regarding mobile ECG technology were time, workload, and remuneration for improved interoperability with current systems and sustainability for screening long term. Data on the experiences of HCPs came from studies capturing mainly proactive, lower-risk patients; therefore, this review was unable to demonstrate if there are any differences between the experiences of HCPs working in primary care settings, such as GP practices/pharmacies, and those working remotely in the community. This highlights a gap in provision for those patients requiring HCPs to record an ECG in their own home. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The experiences of HCPs towards using Mobile ECG technology in practice is quick, easy and feasible in both urban and remote settings. HCPs and organisations should consider identifying key staff as "change champions" and use change/leadership models to support the integration (with current workflows), transformation, and evaluation of mobile ECG technology in their practice setting. HCPs and providers using mobile ECG technology should ensure it prioritises at-risk individuals and includes the "housebound" population.

This column explores the emerging field of digital therapeutics (DTx) as evidence-based and FDA-cleared digital interventions - setting them apart from the majority of commercially available solutions. In an effort to identify high quality and evidence-based options, medical and health science librarians can benefit from recognizing the qualifications of DTx, types of available DTx, and use cases for their patrons.

Adhesion is a critical quality attribute and performance characteristic for transdermal and topical delivery systems (TDS). Regulatory agencies recommend in vivo skin adhesion studies to support the approval of TDS in both new drug applications and abbreviated new drug applications. The current assessment approach in such studies is based on the visual observation of the percent adhesion, defined as the ratio of the area of TDS attached to the skin to the total area of the TDS. Visually estimated percent adhesion by trained clinicians or trial participants creates variability and bias. In addition, trial participants are typically confined to clinical centers during the entire product wear period, which may lead to challenges when translating adhesion performance to the real world setting. In this work we propose to use artificial intelligence and mobile technologies to aid and automate the collection of photographic evidence and estimation of percent adhesion. We trained state-of-art deep learning models with advanced techniques and in-house curated data. Results indicate good performance from the trained models and the potential use of such models in clinical practice is further explored.

Augmented reality (AR) technology has generated enormous industry investment and buzz, with the food and beverage sector quickly embracing this technology in an effort to enhance the customer experience. However, academic research has only just begun to empirically explore how and why this technology might influence consumer judgements and behaviors in such contexts. Across two field studies involving consequential behavior and two controlled laboratory studies, we find that AR's unique ability to visually superimpose objects onto a real-time environment increases consumers' ability to mentally simulate consuming a pictured food, which in turn increases their desire and purchase likelihood of the food item. Further, we find the increased mental simulation produced by AR is itself preceded and driven by an increased sense of personal relevance of the food items. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment and management (RAM) services face many challenges and barriers in the community. Mobile technology offers the opportunity to empower patients and improve access to health prevention strategies to overcome these barriers. However, there is limited information on the availability and use of CVDRAM-related mobile technology in the Arabic language. Objectives: To pilot test an Arabic version of a CVDRAM application among potential end-users accessing community pharmacy services in Qatar. Methodology: Translation of an established cardiovascular risk calculator (EPI·RxISK™) into the Arabic language was conducted. The English/Arabic version of the calculator was tested by potential end-users, consisting of a sample of community pharmacists (CRxs) and members of the public (MOP) accessing community pharmacy services. Semi-structured interviews were conducted based on the quality attributes of the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS). Data were analyzed using deductive content analysis. Results: A total of 10 CRxs and 5 MOP were interviewed. Five themes emerged to describe the EPI·RxISK™ calculator: Engagement, Functionality, Attractiveness, Education, and Responsiveness. For the most part, positive subthemes were associated with each of these themes. The functionality and educational themes had some negative subthemes. Conclusion: End-users of the EPI·RxISK™ calculator had mostly positive descriptors that were aligned with all five quality attributes of the web and mobile applications.

Drawing on transformative experience theory (Pugh, 2011) and in collaboration with high school science teachers, the authors developed an intervention (Seeing Science project) leveraging everyday mobile technology as a tool for integrating in-school and out-of-school experience. Students were instructed to take pictures when they noticed connections to unit content and post these with a caption on a class site. The current study used design-based research methods to revise and evaluate the Seeing Science project over a 2-year period. Revisions to the project were informed by year one data and principles of the Teaching for Transformative Experiences in Science (TTES) instructional model. Data sources included project artifacts, student interviews, and teacher interviews. Revisions to the project resulted in higher quality posts in pre-AP biology classes and greater participation in regular biology classes. Furthermore, an analysis of posts, classroom observations, and student interviews revealed that the project helped some students connect in-school learning to out-of-school experience and undergo transformative experiences. The current study contributes to transformative experience theory by identifying and developing strategies for fostering transformative experiences. These strategies further inform the TTES model and may support depth of learning and career identification.

This study investigated a digital reform initiative, rated excellent by the government, of one higher education institution (HEI) in an Arab State in the Gulf. The focus of the study was to develop a digital typology, while exploring the leadership attributes that characterized the core leadership team, as they accomplished the migration towards a digital culture in one year, within a context where faculty members showed resistance against digitalization. The study was conducted immediately after the implementation of the initiative that took place over the course of one year, just before the Covid-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with all the six key individuals in the leadership team who led this initiative. Data was analyzed using content-based analysis. Findings of the study were used to synthesize a 5D typology for digital leadership attributes: (1) Digital competence; (2) Digital culture; (3) Digital Differentiation; (4) Digital governance; and (5) Digital advocacy. The paper provides in depth discussion how these attributes supported the adaptive ability of a Higher Education Institution towards accepting digitalization.
