BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested a significant association of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) with ambient air pollutants. Existing studies have characterized the role of air pollutants on HFMD using only risk ratio measures while ignoring the attributable burden. And whether the geographical context (i.e., diverse topographic features) could modulate the relationships is unclear. METHODS: Daily reported childhood HFMD counts, ambient air pollution, and meteorological data during 2015-2017 were collected for each of 21 cities in Sichuan Province. A multistage analysis was carried out in different populations based on geographical context to assess effect modification by topographic conditions. We first constructed a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) for each city to describe the relationships with risk ratio measures. Then, we applied a multivariate meta-regression to estimate the pooled effects of multiple air pollutants on HFMD from the exposure and lagged dimensions. Finally, attributable risks measures were calculated to quantify HFMD burden by air pollution. RESULTS: Based on 207554 HFMD cases in Sichuan Province, significant associations of HFMD with ambient air pollutants were observed mainly at relatively high exposure ranges. The effects of ambient air pollutants on HFMD are most pronounced on lag0 or around lag7, with relative risks gradually approaching the reference line thereafter. The attributable risks of O3 were much greater than those of other air pollutants, particularly in basin and mountain regions. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed significant pooled relationships between multiple air pollutants and HFMD incidence from both exposure and lag dimensions. However, the specific effects, including RRs and ARs, differ depending on the air pollution variable and geographical context. These findings provide local authorities with more evidence to determine key air pollutants and regions for devising and implementing targeted interventions.

The occurrence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is closely related to meteorological factors. However, location-specific characteristics, such as persistent air pollution, may increase the complexity of the impact of meteorological factors on HFMD, and studies across different areas and populations are largely lacking. In this study, a two-stage multisite time-series analysis was conducted using data from 16 cities in Shandong Province from 2015 to 2019. In the first stage, we obtained the cumulative exposure-response curves of meteorological factors and the number of HFMD cases for each city. In the second stage, we merged the estimations from the first stage and included city-specific air pollution variables to identify significant effect modifiers and how they modified the short-term relationship between HFMD and meteorological factors. High concentrations of air pollutants may reduce the risk effects of high average temperature on HFMD and lead to a distinct peak in the cumulative exposure-response curve, while lower concentrations may increase the risk effects of high relative humidity. Furthermore, the effects of average wind speed on HFMD were different at different levels of air pollution. The differences in modification effects between subgroups were mainly manifested in the diversity and quantity of significant modifiers. The modification effects of long-term air pollution levels on the relationship between sunshine hours and HFMD may vary significantly depending on geographical location. The people in age<3 and male groups were more susceptible to long-term air pollution. These findings contribute to a deepening understanding of the relationship between meteorological factors and HFMD and provide evidence for relevant public health decision-making.

STUDY QUESTION: Is there a relationship between pregnancy termination history and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and if so, is the relationship moderated by physical activity (PA)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Induced abortion, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, increased the risk of MetS, while leisure PA attenuated the effects of induced abortion, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, on the risk of MetS. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Pregnancy termination history is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but studies on women's history of pregnancy termination and MetS are limited. PA is a preventive behavior for MetS, but its modification effect on any association between pregnancy termination history and MetS is unknown. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: The cross-sectional study included 53 702 women (age range of 30-79 years old) from southwestern China who participated in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study from May 2018 to September 2019. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Participants self-reported both the number and type of pregnancy termination. PA was assessed primarily by asking participants about the cumulative time they spent doing PA either as their occupation, transportation, housework, and leisure activity in the past year. MetS was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: After adjusting for all confounders, the risk of MetS was significantly increased in women who experienced induced abortion alone, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.08 (95% CI = 1.03-1.13) and 1.20 (95% CI = 1.08-1.33), respectively. A dose-response relationship was observed between the number of induced abortions and MetS, with the risk increasing by 3.0% for every additional induced abortion (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01-1.05). Leisure PA had a significant modification effect on the relationship between pregnancy termination history and MetS, as leisure PA attenuates the negative effects of induced abortion on MetS. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Causality cannot be established in this study. Information on pregnancy termination and PA was collected by self-report, which might be subject to recall bias. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: A history of induced abortion was associated with an increased risk of MetS, and the risk increased with the number of induced abortions. Leisure PA attenuated the negative effect of induced abortion on MetS, whereas occupational and transportation PA amplified the negative effect of induced abortion on glucose. Activated carbon (AC) is negatively charged in aqueous solution, which seriously restricts its application range. Quaternary ammonium salt as a common cationic surfactant was utilized to modify the surface charge distribution of materials. The evolution of the surface charge distribution of AC modified by benzalkonium chloride (BAC), diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDA) and 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl tri-methyl ammonium chloride (CTA) was investigated. Results showed that the surface charge of AC modified by CTA does not change significantly. BAC has a high molecular weight, low surface electrostatic potential and large steric hindrance due to its hydrophobic long-chain alkyl. The diffusion of BAC molecules from solution to AC changed its charge distribution. But these molecules were difficult to combine with AC surface, and most of them were adsorbed into the pores of AC to form aggregates, resulting in a significant reduction in the surface area. BAC modified AC could enhance the adsorption capacity of F- in aqueous solution through electrostatic attraction, but the improvement effect was limited due to the reduction of surface area, and the maximum adsorption capacity was only increased from 1.18 to 3.31 mg/g. DDA has a small molecular weight and high surface electrostatic potential and easily binds to the surface of AC. Some CC bonds in DDA combined with the ionized hydrogen ions derived from phenolic hydroxyl groups in AC to form carbonium-ions. Then, they could react with AC to form ether bonds, causing DDA to be closely bonded with the surface of AC. DDA realizes the targeted regulation of the surface charge distribution of AC, it has little effect on the porous structure of AC. The modified AC still maintained strong adsorption capacity, and the maximum adsorption capacity for F- was 54.98 mg/g. Meanwhile, a large number of zeolites were loaded on the modified AC and formed coating structures.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have investigated the short-term effects of meteorological factors and air pollution on the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Several meteorological indicators, such as relative humidity and the diurnal temperature range (DTR), significantly modify the relationship between short-term exposure to temperature and HFMD incidence. However, it remains unclear whether (and how) long-term air pollution levels modify the short-term relationships of HFMD incidence with meteorological factors and air pollution. METHODS: We obtained daily data on meteorological factors, air pollutants, and HFMD counts in children from 21 prefecture-level cities in Sichuan Province in Southwest China from 2015 to 2017. First, we constructed a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) at each prefecture-level site to evaluate the short-term impacts of meteorological variables and air pollutants on HFMD incidence. Then, we assessed the pooled effects of the exposures and incorporated long-term city-specific air pollutant indicators as meta-predictors to examine their potential modification effects by performing multivariate meta-regression models. RESULTS: We found that long-term SO2 and CO concentrations significantly modified the short-term relationships between climatic variables and HFMD incidence. Specifically, high concentrations of CO (P = 0.027) and SO2 (P = 0.039) reduced the risk of HFMD at low temperatures. The relationship between relative humidity and HFMD incidence was weakened at high SO2 concentrations (P = 0.024), especially when the relative humidity was below the median level. When the minimum relative humidity (32%) was compared to the median relative humidity (77%), the risk ratio (RR) was 0.77 (95% CI: 0.51-1.17) in the 90th percentile of SO2 (19.6 µg/m3) and 0.41 (95% CI: 0.27-0.64) in the 10th percentile of SO2 (10.6 µg/m3). CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that long-term SO2 and CO levels modified the short-term associations between HFMD incidence in children and meteorological variables. These findings may inform health authorities to optimize targeted public health policies including reducing ambient air pollution and reinforcing self-protective actions to weaken the adverse health impacts of environmental factors on HFMD incidence.

BACKGROUND: The beneficial effects of weight reduction on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are highly variable. Whether or not the variability is associated with the effects of age and sex remains unclear. This study examined this issue with large cross-sectional data. METHOD: Anthropometric measurements, polysomnographic variables, biochemical indicators, and medical history were collected for each participant. Multivariable linear regression with interaction terms was used to estimate the modification effect of age on the associations between OSA severity (assessed by apnea-hypopnea index, AHI) with obesity indices (body mass index, BMI; neck circumference, NC; waist circumference, WC; waist-to-hip ratio, WHR) in a sex-specific manner, and vice versa. To facilitate interpretation of the results, participants were further classified into six subpopulations according to both sex and age, and population-specific beta-coefficients were calculated and compared. RESULTS: A total of 5756 adults (4600 men) with suspected OSA were included in the study. BMI, NC, WC, and WHR were all positively correlated with AHI after adjusting for potential confounders in all populations. In men, these associations were much stronger and more significant in younger than older individuals (P for interaction < 0.001). For example, a 10% increase in BMI was independently associated with a 32% increase in AHI for men < 40 years old, whereas the corresponding increases were 21% and 17% for men 40-60 and > 60 years old, respectively. By contrast, no modification effect of age was observed in women (P for interaction > 0.05). A 10% increase in BMI was associated with 26%, 27%, and 24% increases in AHI for women < 40, 40-60, and > 60 years old, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Age modifies the associations between obesity indices and OSA severity in a sex-specific manner. These findings may broaden the understanding of age- and sex-related heterogeneities in the pathogenic role of obesity in OSA, and may be beneficial for individualized risk evaluation and treatment management for patients with OSA.

Few studies have been conducted to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the effect of temperature on cardiovascular disease at population level, especially among Chinese population. A total of 56,039 participants were recruited from Kailuan cohort study, China. The lipoprotein profile indicators, including triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein, were collected. Non-linear associations between temperature and the lipoprotein profile indicators were examined using a nonlinear function for temperature. Stratified analyses were performed in groups by individual characteristics (age, gender, and body mass index) and individual behaviors (physical activities and smoking habits). Generally, a non-linear relationship was found between cholesterol levels and temperature. A 1 °C decrease in temperature below the threshold was related with 0.004 mmol/L (95% CI 0.0004, 0.008), 0.022 mmol/L (95% CI 0.020, 0.025), and 0.009 mmol/L (95% CI 0.008, 0.011) increase in TG, LDL, and HDL, respectively; a 1 °C increase in temperature above the threshold was associated with 0.005 mmol/L (95% CI 0.003, 0.007), 0.012 mmol/L (95% CI 0.009, 0.015), and 0.002 mmol/L (95% CI 0.001, 0.004) increase in TG, LDL, and HDL, respectively. Stratified analyses showed that effect estimates on TG and LDL were larger among females, subjects with higher BMI, and those with smoking habits, while effect estimates on HDL were smaller among these subjects (expect for female). Our results suggest both cold and hot effect of temperature on cholesterol. Furthermore, females, and people with higher BMI or smoking habit may be more susceptible to outdoor temperature.

Ignitable liquids such as fuels, alcohols and thinners can be used in criminal activities, for instance arsons. Forensic experts require to know their chemical compositions, as well as to understand how different modification effects could impact them, in order to detect, classify and identify them properly in fire debris. The acid alteration/acidification of ignitable liquids is a modification effect that sharply alters the chemical composition, for example, of gasoline and diesel fuel, interfering in the forensic analysis and result interpretation. However, to date there is little information about the consequences of this effect over other accelerants of interests. In this research paper, the alteration by sulfuric acid of several commercial thinners and other accelerants of potential use in arsons is studied in-depth. For that purpose, spectral (by ATR-FTIR) and chromatographic (by GC-MS) data were obtained from neat and acidified samples. Then, the spectral and chromatographic modifications of each studied ignitable liquid were discussed, proposing several chemical mechanisms that explain the new by-products produced and the gradual disappearance of the initial compounds. Hydrolysis, Fischer esterification and alkylation reactions are involved in the modification of esters, alcohols, ketones and aromatic compounds of the studied ignitable liquids. This information could be crucial for correctly identifying these accelerants. Additionally, an exploratory analysis revealed that some of the most altered ignitable liquid samples might be very similar with each other, which could have impact on casework.

CONTEXT: Previous studies failed to adjust for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in evaluating the association between albuminuria and anemia development, and we aimed to investigate whether albuminuria independently affects anemia development. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study and retrospectively identified adults with diabetes from a Japanese nationwide clinical database (JMDC, Tokyo, Japan). To assess the modification effects of albuminuria on the association between eGFR and anemia development, we estimated prevalence of anemia, defined as hemoglobin < 13 g/dL in men and < 12 g/dL in women, using a modified Poisson regression and marginal standardization form of predictive margins, stratified by albuminuria severity after adjusting for eGFR. Hence, we revealed at which eGFR level this modification effect appeared and the extent to which this modification effect increased the prevalence of anemia. RESULTS: We identified 327 999 data points from 48 056 individuals [normoalbuminuria: 186 472 (56.9%), microalbuminuria: 107 170 (32.7%), and macroalbuminuria: 34 357 (10.5%)]. As eGFR declined, anemia prevalence increased. Albuminuria severity modified this association induced by decreased eGFR among individuals with eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m2 after adjusting for multivariable factors, including age, sex, comorbidities, and medication use. Compared with the normoalbuminuric group, the macroalbuminuric group had a 5% to 20% higher anemia prevalence among individuals with eGFR of <30 mL/min/1.73 m2. CONCLUSION: We revealed that the severity of albuminuria modified the association between eGFR and anemia development among individuals with eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m2, highlighting the modification effect of albuminuria on the association between kidney function and anemia development in diabetes.

Background: Studies have reported the adverse effects of cold events on influenza. However, the role of critical factors, such as characteristics of cold spells, and regional variations remain unresolved. Objective: We aimed to systematically evaluate the association between cold spells and influenza incidence in mainland China. Methods: This time series analysis used surveillance data of daily influenza from 325 sites in China in the 2014-2019 period. A total of 15 definitions of cold spells were adopted based on combinations of temperature thresholds and days of duration. A distributed lag linear model was used to estimate the short-term effects of cold spells on influenza incidence during the cool seasons (November to March), and we further explored the potential impact of cold spell characteristics (ie, intensity, duration, and timing during the season) on the estimated associations. Meta-regressions were used to evaluate the modification effect of city-level socioeconomic indicators. Results: The overall effect of cold spells on influenza incidence increased with the temperature threshold used to define cold spells, whereas the added effects were generally small and not statistically significant. The relative risk of influenza-associated with cold spells was 3.35 (95% CI 2.89-3.88), and the estimated effects were stronger during the middle period of cool seasons. The health effects of cold spells varied geographically and residents in Jiangnan region were vulnerable groups (relative risk 7.36, 95% CI 5.44-9.95). The overall effects of cold spells were positively correlated with the urban population density, population size, gross domestic product per capita, and urbanization rate, indicating a sterner response to cold spells in metropolises. Conclusions: Cold spells create a substantial health burden on seasonal influenza in China. Findings on regional and socioeconomic differences in the health effects of cold spells on seasonal influenza may be useful in formulating region-specific public health policies to address the hazardous effects of cold spells.

AIMS: The relationship between the long-term joint exposure to ambient air pollution and incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) and modification by genetic susceptibility remain inconclusive. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed 329 189 UK Biobank participants without MI at baseline. Exposure concentrations to particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were obtained. Air pollution score assessing the joint exposure was calculated, and its association with MI was evaluated via Cox model under the P value aggregation framework. Genetic susceptibility to MI was evaluated by incorporating polygenic risk score (PRS) into models. Risk prediction models were also established. During a median follow-up of 13.4 years, 9993 participants developed MI. Per interquartile range increase of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx resulted in 74% [95% confidence intervals (CIs) 69%-79%], 67% (63%-72%), 46% (42%-49%), and 38% (35%-41%) higher risk of MI. Compared with the lowest quartile (Q1) of air pollution score, the multivariable adjusted hazard ratio (HR) (95%CIs) of Q4 (the highest cumulative air pollution) was 3.50 (3.29-3.72) for MI. Participants with the highest PRS and air pollution score possessed the highest risk of incident MI (HR = 4.88, 95%CIs 4.35-5.47). Integrating PRS, air pollution exposure, and traditional factors substantially improved risk prediction of MI. CONCLUSION: Long-term joint exposure to air pollutants including PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx is substantially associated with increased risk of MI. Genetic susceptibility to MI strengthens such adverse joint association. Air pollutions together with genetic and traditional factors enhance the accuracy of MI risk prediction.


Our study aimed to analyse the relationship between the long-term joint exposure to four ambient air pollutants and incidence of myocardial infarction (MI), and the modification role of genetic susceptibility. Four air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx) were adversely associated with the incidence of MI as well as with its two subtypes including ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Air pollution score representing co-exposure to multiple air pollutants was related to increased risk of incident MI, STEMI, and NSTEMI. Genetic susceptibility to MI strengthened the adverse association of co-exposure to air pollution with the risk of MI, STEMI, and NSTEMI.

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are well-acknowledged pro-inflammatory chemicals, but their associations with blood cell-based inflammatory biomarkers need further investigation. Moreover, the effects and mechanisms of essential metals on PAH-related inflammation remain poorly understood. OBJECTS: To elucidate the associations of PAHs on inflammatory biomarkers, as well as the effects and mechanisms of essential metals on these associations. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1388 coke oven workers. We analyzed the modification effects of key essential metal(s) on PAHs-inflammatory biomarkers associations. To explore the possible mechanisms from an inflammation perspective, we performed a bioinformatic analysis on the genes of PAHs and essential metals obtained from the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) and performed a mediation analysis. RESULTS: We observed associations of PAHs and essential metals with lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) (P < 0.05). PAH mixtures were inversely associated with LMR (ßQGC-index = -0.18, P < 0.001), with 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OH-Pyr) being the most prominent contributor (weight = 63.37%), whereas a positive association between essential metal mixtures and LMR was observed (ßQGC-index = 0.14, P < 0.001), with tin being the most significant contributor (weight = 51.61%). An inverse association of 1-OH-Pyr with LMR was weakened by increased tin exposure (P < 0.05). The CTD database showed that PAHs and tin compounds co-regulated 22 inflammation-associated genes, but they regulated most genes in opposite directions. Further identified the involvement of oxidative stress and mediation analysis showed that the mediation effect of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) on 1-OH-Pyr-LMR association presented heterogeneity between low and high tin tertile groups (I2 = 37.84%). CONCLUSION: 1-OH-Pyr and tin were significantly associated with LMR. Modification effects indicated that the inverse association of 1-OH-Pyr with LMR was mitigated with an increase in tin. The mediation effect of 8-OHdG on the inverse association of 1-OH-Pyr with LMR may be partially dependent on tin.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal obesity is a highly suggestive risk factor of offspring congenital heart diseases (CHD). However, the risk of offspring CHD associated with maternal underweight has rarely been mentioned. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effect of preconception underweight on offspring CHD. METHODS: From November 2017 to August 2021, 132 386 pregnant women were enrolled in a birth cohort study in China in early pregnancy, and completed follow-up until delivery (or miscarriage/termination). Offspring CHD was diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound examination in both live births and stillbirths. Log-binomial regression and restricted cubic spline were used to estimate the risk of offspring CHD associated with preconception body mass index (BMI). A generalized additive model was used to explore the modification effect of maternal age on the association between preconception BMI and offspring CHD. RESULTS: A total of 129 096 pregnant women were included in the analysis. The incidence of CHD in the underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity groups were 117/17 313 (0.68%), 556/85 695 (0.65%), 128/19 936 (0.64%), 47/6152 (0.76%), respectively. Both underweight and obesity before pregnancy marginally increased the risk of offspring CHD. The association between preconception BMI and offspring CHD varied by maternal age, with low preconception BMI associated with a significantly higher risk of offspring CHD in women <24 years (RR 2.32, 95% CI: 1.07-5.01 for 17 vs 21 kg/m2). CONCLUSION: Preconception underweight was associated with an increased risk of offspring CHD in young pregnant women. Therefore, weight gain is important to prevent offspring CHD, especially for young women with low preconception BMI.

BACKGROUND: Poor sperm quality is a major cause of male infertility. However, evidence remains scarce on how greenness affects male sperm quality. OBJECTIVES: To assess the associations of residential greenness with male sperm quality and the modification effect of air pollution exposure on the relationship. METHODS: A total of 78,742 samples from 33,184 sperm donors from 6 regions across China during 2014-2020 were included and analyzed. Individual residential greenness exposures of study subjects were estimated using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) during the entire (0-90 lag days) and two key stages (0-37, and 34-77 lag days) of sperm development. Contemporaneous personal exposure levels to air pollutants were estimated using a spatio-temporal deep learning method. Linear mixed models were employed to assess the impact of greenspace in relation to sperm quality. The modification effect of air pollution on the greenspace-sperm quality relationship was also estimated. RESULTS: Per IQR increment in NDVI exposure throughout spermatogenesis were statistically associated with increasing sperm count by 0.0122 (95 % CI: 0.0007, 0.0237), progressive motility by 0.0162 (95 % CI: 0.0045, 0.0280), and total motility by 0.0147 (95 % CI: 0.0014, 0.0281), respectively. Similar results were observed when the model added air pollutants (PM1, PM2.5 or O3) for adjustment. Additionally, specific air pollutants, including PM1, PM2.5, and O3, were found to modify this association. Notably, the protective effects of greenness exposure were more pronounced at higher concentrations of PM1 and PM2.5 and lower concentrations of O3 (all Pinteraction < 0.05). Statistically significant positive effects of NDVI were observed on sperm motility in early spermatogenesis and sperm count in late spermatogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to residential greenness may have beneficial effects on sperm quality and air pollution modifies their relationship. These findings highlight the importance of adopting adaptable urban greenspace planning and policies to safeguard male fertility against environmental factors.

The poor properties of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and recycled coarse aggregate concrete (RCAC) are considered key constraints hindering the reuse of this waste resource in marine engineering. The CO2-based accelerated carbonation method, which utilizes the alkali aggregate properties of RCA to achieve CO2 uptake and sequestration while significantly enhancing its properties, has attracted widespread attention. However, the degree of improvement in the properties of RCA under different initial moisture conditions (IMCs) and aggregate particle sizes (APSs) after CO2-accelerated carbonation remains unclear. Moreover, the quantitative effect of carbonated recycled coarse aggregate (CRCA), which is obtained from RCA samples with the optimal initial moisture conditions, on the improvement of RCAC under optimal accelerated carbonation modification conditions still needs to be studied in depth. For this investigation, a CO2-accelerated carbonation experiment was carried out on RCA samples with different IMCs and APSs, and the variations in the properties of RCA with respect to its IMC and APS were assessed. The degree of accelerated carbonation modification of RCA under different IMCs and APSs was quantified, and the optimal initial moisture conditions for enhancing the properties of the RCA were confirmed. By preparing concrete specimens based on the natural coarse aggregate, RCA, and CRCA with the best initial moisture conditions (considering the same concrete-water proportion), the effect of CRCA on the workability, mechanical properties, and durability of the corresponding concrete specimen was determined. The findings of this study can be used to effectively promote the sustainable development of marine science and engineering in the future and contribute to global dual-carbon goals, which are of great practical significance and scientific value.

Varicella is a rising public health issue. Several studies have tried to quantify the relationships between meteorological factors and varicella incidence but with inconsistent results. We aim to investigate the impact of temperature and relative humidity on varicella, and to further explore the effect modification of these relationships. In this study, the data of varicella and meteorological factors from 2011 to 2019 in 21 cities of Guangdong Province, China were collected. Distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNM) were constructed to explore the relationship between meteorological factors (temperature and relative humidity) and varicella in each city, controlling in school terms, holidays, seasonality, long-term trends, and day of week. Multivariate meta-analysis was applied to pool the city-specific estimations. And the meta-regression was used to explore the effect modification for the spatial heterogeneity of city-specific meteorological factors and social factors (such as disposable income per capita, vaccination coverage, and so on) on varicella. The results indicated that the relationship between temperature and varicella in 21 cities appeared nonlinear with an inverted S-shaped. The relative risk peaked at 20.8 ℃ (RR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.22, 1.65). The relative humidity-varicella relationship was approximately L-shaped, with a peaking risk at 69.5% relative humidity (RR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.50). The spatial heterogeneity of temperature-varicella relationships may be caused by income or varicella vaccination coverage. And varicella vaccination coverage may contribute to the spatial heterogeneity of the relative humidity-varicella relationship. The findings can help us deepen the understanding of the meteorological factors-varicella association and provide evidence for developing prevention strategy for varicella epidemic.

Moisture is the basis of CO2 transport and carbonation reactions in the internal pores of cement-based materials. Too much or too little moisture influences the effect of the carbonation modification of CO2 on recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). During the carbonation reaction process of RCA, moisture is mainly derived from the environmental relative humidity (RH) and the initial water content (IWC) of the RCA itself. According to the available literature, most of the studies on the effect of moisture on the carbonation modification of RCA considered either RH or IWC. Further investigations of the synergistic effects of RH and IWC on the improvement in the properties of carbonated recycled concrete aggregate (CRCA) are needed. In this study, accelerated carbonation experiments were conducted for RCA samples with different IWCs under different environmental RHs. The results showed that the best moisture conditions for CRCA property improvement were confirmed as RH = 70% for the dry-state IWC and RH = 50% for the saturated-state IWC. When the RCAs were carbonized under the conditions of high RH with low IWC and low RH with high IWC, CO2 had good abilities to permeate and diffuse, with the improvement in CRCA properties achieving excellent levels of performance.

A multitude of epidemiological studies have demonstrated that both ambient temperatures and air pollution are closely related to health outcomes. However, whether temperature has modification effects on the association between ozone and health outcomes is still debated. In this study, three parallel time-series Poisson generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to examine the effects of modifying ambient temperatures on the association between ozone and mortality (including non-accidental, respiratory, and cardiovascular mortality) in Chengdu, China, from 2014 to 2016. The results confirmed that the ambient high temperatures strongly amplified the adverse effects of ozone on human mortality; specifically, the ozone effects were most pronounced at > 28 °C. Without temperature stratification conditions, a 10-µg/m3 increase in the maximum 8-h average ozone (O3-8hmax) level at lag01 was associated with increases of 0.40% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.15%, 0.65%), 0.61% (95% CI 0.27%, 0.95%), and 0.69% (95% CI 0.34%, 1.04%) in non-accidental, respiratory, and cardiovascular mortality, respectively. On days during which the temperature exceeded 28 °C, a 10-µg/m3 increase in O3-8hmax led to increases of 2.22% (95% CI 1.21%, 3.23%), 2.67% (95% CI 0.57%, 4.76%), and 4.13% (95% CI 2.34%, 5.92%) in non-accidental, respiratory, and cardiovascular mortality, respectively. Our findings validated that high temperature could further aggravate the health risks of O3-8hmax; thus, mitigating ozone exposure will be brought into the limelight especially under the context of changing climate.

Studies have investigated the effects of heat and temperature variability (TV) on mortality. However, few assessed whether TV modifies the heat-mortality association. Data on daily temperature and mortality in the warm season were collected from 717 locations across 36 countries. TV was calculated as the standard deviation of the average of the same and previous days' minimum and maximum temperatures. We used location-specific quasi-Poisson regression models with an interaction term between the cross-basis term for mean temperature and quartiles of TV to obtain heat-mortality associations under each quartile of TV, and then pooled estimates at the country, regional, and global levels. Results show the increased risk in heat-related mortality with increments in TV, accounting for 0.70% (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.33 to 1.69), 1.34% (95% CI: -0.14 to 2.73), 1.99% (95% CI: 0.29-3.57), and 2.73% (95% CI: 0.76-4.50) of total deaths for Q1-Q4 (first quartile-fourth quartile) of TV. The modification effects of TV varied geographically. Central Europe had the highest attributable fractions (AFs), corresponding to 7.68% (95% CI: 5.25-9.89) of total deaths for Q4 of TV, while the lowest AFs were observed in North America, with the values for Q4 of 1.74% (95% CI: -0.09 to 3.39). TV had a significant modification effect on the heat-mortality association, causing a higher heat-related mortality burden with increments of TV. Implementing targeted strategies against heat exposure and fluctuant temperatures simultaneously would benefit public health.

Backgrounds: Whether longitudinal changes in metabolic status influence the effect of kidney stones on cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclarified. We investigated the modification effect of status changes in metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the association of kidney stones with risk of incident CVD events. Methods: We performed a prospective association and interaction study in a nationwide cohort including 129,172 participants aged ≥ 40 years without CVDs at baseline and followed up for an average of 3.8 years. Kidney stones information was collected by using a questionnaire and validated by medical records. The repeated biochemical measurements were performed to ascertain the metabolic status at both baseline and follow-up. Results: 4,017 incident total CVDs, 1,413 coronary heart diseases (CHDs) and 2,682 strokes were documented and ascertained during follow-up. Kidney stones presence was significantly associated with 44%, 70% and 31% higher risk of CVDs, CHDs and stroke, respectively. The stratified analysis showed significant associations were found in the incident and sustained MetS patients, while no significant associations were found in the non-MetS at both baseline and follow-up subjects or the MetS remission ones, especially in women. For the change status of each single component of the MetS, though the trends were not always the same, the associations with CVD were consistently significant in those with sustained metabolic disorders, except for the sustained high blood glucose group, while the associations were consistently significant in those with incident metabolic disorders except for the incident blood pressure group. We also found a significant association of kidney stone and CVD or CHD risk in the remain normal glucose or triglycerides groups; while the associations were consistently significant in those with incident metabolic disorders except for the incident blood pressure group. We also found a significant association of kidney stone and CVD or CHD risk in the remain normal glucose or triglycerides groups. Conclusions: A history of kidney stones in women with newly developed MetS or long-standing MetS associated with increased risk of CVD. The mechanisms link kidney stones and CVD risk in the metabolic and non-metabolic pathways were warranted for further studies.
