RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the inflammatory milieu of diabetic chronic wounds, macrophages undergo substantial metabolic reprogramming and play a pivotal role in orchestrating immune responses. Itaconic acid, primarily synthesized by inflammatory macrophages as a byproduct in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, has recently gained increasing attention as an immunomodulator. This study aims to assess the immunomodulatory capacity of an itaconic acid derivative, 4-Octyl itaconate (OI), which was covalently conjugated to electrospun nanofibers and investigated through in vitro studies and a full-thickness wound model of diabetic mice. RESULTS: OI was feasibly conjugated onto chitosan (CS), which was then grafted to electrospun polycaprolactone/gelatin (PG) nanofibers to obtain P/G-CS-OI membranes. The P/G-CS-OI membrane exhibited good mechanical strength, compliance, and biocompatibility. In addition, the sustained OI release endowed the nanofiber membrane with great antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities as revealed in in vitro and in vivo studies. Specifically, the P/G-CS-OI membrane activated nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) by alkylating Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1). This antioxidative response modulates macrophage polarization, leading to mitigated inflammatory responses, enhanced angiogenesis, and recovered re-epithelization, finally contributing to improved healing of mouse diabetic wounds. CONCLUSIONS: The P/G-CS-OI nanofiber membrane shows good capacity in macrophage modulation and might be promising for diabetic chronic wound treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetic wounds present significant challenges, specifically in terms of bacterial infection and delayed healing. Therefore, it is crucial to address local bacterial issues and promote accelerated wound healing. In this investigation, we utilized electrospinning to fabricate microgel/nanofiber membranes encapsulating MXene-encapsulated microgels and chitosan/gelatin polymers. RESULTS: The film dressing facilitates programmed photothermal therapy (PPT) and mild photothermal therapy (MPTT) under near-infrared (NIR), showcasing swift and extensive antibacterial and biofilm-disrupting capabilities. The PPT effect achieves prompt sterilization within 5 min at 52 °C and disperses mature biofilm within 10 min. Concurrently, by adjusting the NIR power to induce local mild heating (42 °C), the dressing stimulates fibroblast proliferation and migration, significantly enhancing vascularization. Moreover, in vivo experimentation successfully validates the film dressing, underscoring its immense potential in addressing the intricacies of diabetic wounds. CONCLUSIONS: The MXene microgel-loaded nanofiber dressing employs temperature-coordinated photothermal therapy, effectively amalgamating the advantageous features of high-temperature sterilization and low-temperature promotion of wound healing. It exhibits rapid, broad-spectrum antibacterial and biofilm-disrupting capabilities, exceptional biocompatibility, and noteworthy effects on promoting cell proliferation and vascularization. These results affirm the efficacy of our nanofiber dressing, highlighting its significant potential in addressing the challenge of diabetic wounds struggling to heal due to infection.

RESUMO

Diabetic wounds pose a challenge to healing due to increased bacterial susceptibility and poor vascularization. Effective healing requires simultaneous bacterial and biofilm elimination and angiogenesis stimulation. In this study, we incorporated polyaniline (PANI) and S-Nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) into a polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (PVA/CS/HTCC) matrix, creating a versatile wound dressing membrane through electrospinning. The dressing combines the advantages of photothermal antibacterial therapy and nitric oxide gas therapy, exhibiting enduring and effective bactericidal activity and biofilm disruption against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, the membrane's PTT effect and NO release exhibit significant synergistic activation, enabling a nanodetonator-like burst release of NO through NIR irradiation to disintegrate biofilms. Importantly, the nanofiber sustained a uniform release of nitric oxide, thereby catalyzing angiogenesis and advancing cellular migration. Ultimately, the employment of this membrane dressing culminated in the efficacious amelioration of diabetic-infected wounds in Sprague-Dawley rats, achieving wound closure within a concise duration of 14 days. Upon applying NIR irradiation to the PVA-CS-HTCC-PANI-GSNO nanofiber membrane, it swiftly eradicates bacteria and biofilm within 5 min, enhancing its inherent antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties through the powerful synergistic action of PTT and NO therapy. It also promotes angiogenesis, exhibits excellent biocompatibility, and is easy to use, highlighting its potential in treating diabetic wounds.

RESUMO

Blood purification technology is one of the main treatment methods to prolong the life of severe patients. The traditional blood purification membrane materials have the disadvantages of non-selective adsorption, single pore size and low permeability, and need to develop new and efficient blood purification membrane materials. To explore the application of a new type of nanofiber membrane in blood purification of critically ill patients and compare and analyze its nursing methods. When the experimental subjects are performing blood purification, a new nanofiber membrane material is used in the purification machine. The control group adopted conventional nursing methods, while the experimental group adopted targeted nursing methods based on the nursing methods of the control group. After intervention, the eight indicators of quality of life in the experimental group were significantly improved (P < 0.05), for example, the score of physiological function was increased from 41.042 ± 7.625 to 54.236 ± 2.544, and the energy status was increased from 46.094 ± 7.192 to 59.768 ± 4.241. The physiological and biochemical indexes of both groups tend to be normal, but the experimental group is more obvious. The patients in the experimental group were more satisfied with the nursing services provided in the process. The new blood purification method of nanofiber membrane can overcome the shortcomings of traditional purification and remove toxic small and medium-sized molecules to the maximum extent.

RESUMO

With increased diabetes incidence, diabetic wound healing is one of the most common diabetes complications and is characterized by easy infection, chronic inflammation, and reduced vascularization. To address these issues, biomaterials with multifunctional antibacterial, immunomodulatory, and angiogenic properties must be developed to improve overall diabetic wound healing for patients. In our study, we prepared porous poly (L-lactic acid) (PLA) nanofiber membranes using electrospinning and solvent evaporation methods. Then, sulfated chitosan (SCS) combined with polydopamine-gentamicin (PDA-GS) was stepwise modified onto porous PLA nanofiber membrane surfaces. Controlled GS release was facilitated via dopamine self-polymerization to prevent early stage infection. PDA was also applied to PLA nanofiber membranes to suppress inflammation. In vitro cell tests results showed that PLA/SCS/PDA-GS nanofiber membranes immuomodulated macrophage toward the M2 phenotype and increased endogenous vascular endothelial growth factor secretion to induce vascularization. Moreover, SCS-contained PLA nanofiber membranes also showed good potential in enhancing macrophage trans-differentiation to fibroblasts, thereby improving wound healing processes. Furthermore, our in vitro antibacterial studies against Staphylococcus aureus indicated the effective antibacterial properties of the PLA/SCS/PDA-GS nanofiber membranes. In summary, our novel porous PLA/SCS/PDA-GS nanofiber membranes possessing enhanced antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic properties demonstrate promising potential in diabetic wound healing processes.

RESUMO

This work aimed to study the efficiency of nano- and micro- fiber membranes in immobilizing Actinobacillus succinogenes CCTCC M2012036 for succinic acid production. Among the four kinds of electrospun nanofiber membranes of cellulose acetate, chitosan, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan-PVA, the cellulose acetate nanofiber membrane-immobilized cells performed the best with a succinic acid concentration and yield to be 27.3 ± 3.5 g/L and 70.9 ± 5.8%. The cell-immobilized viscose microfiber membrane presented good reuse stability, and 17 batches of fermentation without activity loss were realized with the highest succinic acid yield of 83.20%. A microfiber membrane bioreactor was further constructed with the cell-immobilized viscose microfiber membrane to perform fermentation on a larger scale, and the concentration, yield and productivity of succinic acid were 73.20 g/L, 86.50% and 1.49 g/(L⋅h) using a fed-batch strategy, which were 124.30%, 127.60% and 124.2% of those obtained in the traditional fermenter. This study provided an approach for improving the practicality of biological succinic acid production.

RESUMO

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENM) application and preparation methods have attracted attention. With many advantages such as high specific surface area, obvious interconnected structure, and high porosity, ENM has been widely used in many fields, especially in water treatment, with more advantages. ENM solves the shortcomings of traditional means, such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, and difficulty in recycling, and it is suitable for recycling and treatment of industrial wastewater. This review begins with a description of electrospinning technology, describing the structure, preparation methods, and factors of common ENMs. At the same time, the removal of heavy metal ions and dyes by ENMs is introduced. The mechanism of ENM adsorption on heavy metal ions and dyes is chelation or electrostatic attraction, which has excellent adsorption and filtration ability for heavy metal ions and dyes, and the adsorption capacity of ENMs for heavy metal ions and dyes can be improved by increasing the metal chelation sites. Therefore, this technology and mechanism can be exploited to develop new, better, and more effective separation methods for the removal of harmful pollutants to cope with the gradually increasing water scarcity and pollution. Finally, it is hoped that this review will provide some guidance and direction for research on wastewater treatment and industrial production.

RESUMO

In order to improve the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4, the g-C3N4/Ti3C2/Ag3PO4 S-type heterojunction catalyst was prepared by electrostatic assembly method, and then the g-C3N4/Ti3C2/Ag3PO4/PAN composite nanofiber membrane was prepared by electrospinning technology. The morphology and chemical properties of the nanofiber membrane were characterized by SEM, FTIR, and XRD, and the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in water by the nanofiber membrane was investigated. The results showed that g-C3N4/Ti3C2/Ag3PO4 could be successfully loaded on PAN and uniformly distributed on the surface of composite nanofiber membrane by electrospinning technology. Increasing the amount of loading and catalyst, lowering the pH value and TC concentration of the system were conducive to the oxidation and degradation of TC. The nano-fiber catalytic membrane had been recycled five times and found to have excellent photocatalytic stability and reusability. The study of catalytic mechanism showed that h+, •OH and •O2- were produced and participated in the oxidation degradation reaction of TC, and •O2- plays a major role in catalysis. Therefore, this work provides a new insight into the construction of high-performance and high-stability photocatalytic system by electrospinning technology.

RESUMO

The Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell electrospun fiber membrane was prepared by coaxial electrospinning combined with the UV reduction method (254 nm). The prepared Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell nanofiber membrane has a three-dimensional structure, and its swelling ratio could reach as high as 199.87%. Traditional Chinese medicine Panax notoginseng can reduce inflammation, and the silver nanoparticles have antibacterial effects, which synergistically promote rapid wound healing. The developed Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell nanofiber membrane can effectively inhibit the growth of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The wound healing experiments in Sprague Dawley mice showed that the wound residual area rate of the Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell electrospun nanofiber membrane group was only 1.52% on day 9, and the wound of this group basically healed on day 12, while the wound residual area rate of the gauze treatment group (control group) was 16.3% and 10.80% on day 9 and day 12, respectively. The wound of the Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell electrospun nanofiber membrane group healed faster, which contributed to the application of the nanofiber as Chinese medicine rapid wound healing dressings.

RESUMO

Biological ion channels existing in organisms are critical for many biological processes. Inspired by biological ion channels, the heterogeneous electrospinning nanofiber membranes (HENM) with functional ion channels are constructed by electrospinning technology. The HENM successfully realizes ion-gating effects, which can be used for tunable energy conversions. Introduction of pyridine and carboxylic acid groups into the HENM plays an important role in generating unique and stable ion transport behaviors, in which gates become alternative states of open and close, responding to symmetric/asymmetric pH stimulations. Then we used the HENM to convert osmotic energy into electric energy which reach a maximum value up to 12.34 W m-2 and the output power density of HENM-based system could be regulated by ion-gating effects. The properties of the HENM provide widespread potentials in application of smart nanofluidic devices, energy conversion, and water treatment.

RESUMO

Flexible force sensors are of great interest in the fields of healthcare, physiological signals, and aircraft smart skin applications because of their compatibility with curved surfaces. However, the simultaneous detection of multidirectional forces remains an engineering challenge, despite the great progress made in recent years. Herein, we present the development of a flexible capacitive force sensor capable of efficiently distinguishing normal and sliding shear forces. A two-layer electrospun polyimide/graphene oxide (PI/GO) nanofiber membrane is used as the dielectric layer, which is sandwiched between one top electrode and four symmetrically distributed bottom electrodes. This composite membrane has an improved dielectric constant, a reduced friction coefficient, and good compressibility, leading to superior performance that includes high sensitivity over a wide operational range with measured results of 3 MPa-1for 0-242 kPa (0-2.2 N) and 0.92 MPa-1for 242-550 kPa (2.2-5 N) in the normal direction; and better than 1 N-1for 0-3 N in thex- andy-axis directions. The system also has a low detection limit of 10 Pa, fast response and recovery times of 39 ms and 13 ms, respectively, a good cyclic stability of 10,000 cycles at a pressure of 176 kPa, and promising potential for use in high-temperature environments (200 °C). Moreover, a prototype 4 × 4 sensor array has been fabricated and successfully used in a robotic system to grasp objects and operate a wireless toy car. As such, the proposed system could offer superior capabilities in simultaneous multidirectional force sensing for applications such as intelligent robots, human-machine interaction, and smart skin.

RESUMO

In view of the practical application, it is imperative to develop efficient, exercisable, and visible light driven water pollution treatment materials. Herein, a high-efficiency green photocatalytic membrane for water pollution treatment is proposed and fabricated conveniently. Firstly, silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) nanoparticles with controlled morphology were prepared by simple liquid-phase precipitation method, and then a hierarchical structured Ag3PO4@polylactic acid (PLA) composite nanofiber membrane was prepared by electrospinning. Using electrospun PLA nanofiber membrane as a carrier of photocatalysts can significantly improve the dispersion of Ag3PO4nanoparticles, and increase the contact probability with pollutants and photocatalytic activity. The prepared PLA@Ag3PO4composite membrane was used to degrade methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible light irradiation. The results showed that the removal ratio of pollutants on Ag3PO4@PLA composite nanofiber membrane was 94.0% for MB and 82.0% for TC, demonstrating an outstanding photocatalytic activity of composite membrane. Moreover, the PLA nanofiber membrane is a self-supported and biodegradable matrix. After five cycles, it can still achieve 88.0% of the initial photocatalytic degradation rate towards MB, showing excellent recyclability. Thus, this composite nanofiber membrane is a high-efficiency and environmental-friendly visible light driven water pollution treatment material that could be used in real applications.

RESUMO

Airborne transmission of pathogens is the most probable cause for the spread of respiratory diseases, which can be intercepted by personal protective equipment such as masks. In this study, an efficient antiviral personal protective filter was fabricated by coupling the biocompatible curcumin (CCM) with nanofibrous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. The CCM extracted from plants was first dissolved in acidified ethanol at a certain pH and temperature to optimize its loading concentration, antiviral activation, and binding forces on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) support to form a pre-filtration layer at the front section of the filter. Ultrathin PTFE membrane was then fabricated on the antibacterial-antiviral PET support (A-A PET) by controllable heating lamination. This functional layer of the filter exhibits good gas permeance (3423.6 m3/(m2·h·kPa)) and ultrafine particles rejection rate (>98.79%). Moreover, the obtained A-A filter exhibit a high antibacterial rate against a variety of bacteria (E. coli, B. subtilis, A. niger, and Penicillium were 99.84%, 99.02%, 93.60%, 95.23%, respectively). Forthwith virucidal (SARS-CoV-2) efficiency of the A-A filter can reach 99.90% for 5 min. The filter shows good stability after 10 heating cycles, demonstrating its reusability.

RESUMO

Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP), a common disease, often needs a scaffold as the patch to support surgery. Due to the environment of auditory meatus, the patch can be infected by bacteria that results in failure; therefore, the ideal scaffold may combine biomimetic and antibacterial features. In this work, gelatin was used as the electrospinning framework, genipin as the crosslinking agent, and levofloxacin as an antibacterial in order to prepare the scaffold for TMP. Different contents of levofloxacin have been added to gelatin/genipin. It was found that, with the addition of levofloxacin, the gelatin/genipin membranes exhibit improved hydrophilia and enhanced tensile strength. The antibacterial and cell-cultured experiments showed that the prepared antibacterial membranes had excellent antibacterial properties and good biocompatibility, respectively. In summary, levofloxacin is a good group for the gelatin/genipin scaffold because it improves the physical properties and antibacterial action. Compared with different amounts of levofloxacin, a gelatin/genipin membrane with 1% levofloxacin is more suitable for a TM.

RESUMO

As researchers are striving to develop high-performance filtration membranes with hierarchical micro/nano structures, the challenges and costs of processing often limit creative innovation. Here, we propose a polyethersulfone/polyacrylonitrile (PES/PAN) nanofiber membrane with groove structure by electrospinning and facile post-processing. The resulted membrane can form a groove structure on the surface of the fiber after being soaked in chloroform, thereby increasing the collision probability and extending the residence time for ultrafine particulates and improving the filtration efficiency. The groove structure can be attributed to the solubility of PES constituent in chloroform, while PAN constituent will not be dissolved, thus forming a high-performance nanofiber membrane with high filtration efficiency (ca. 99.54%) and withstand pressure drop (ca. 133.9 Pa) for dioctyl phthalate aerosol particles with diameter of 0.3µm. The results show that this convenient and low-cost fabrication technology can be used to prepare high-performance nanofiber membrane based air filters that have broad application prospects in respiratory protective equipment.

RESUMO

To address the flammable and chemical unstable problems of liquid electrolyte, the solid electrolyte is a promising candidate to replace liquid electrolyte for solid-state batteries. Herein, a composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) of 3D polyimide (PI)-nanofiber membrane-incorporated polyethylene oxide (PEO)/lithium bis (triflu-romethanesulphonyl) imid (LiTFSI) is reported. Three advantages of the PI nanofiber network in the CPE include providing a continuous, rapid transport channel of lithium ions to improve the Li-ion conductivity, improving the mechanical properties and stability, and effectively inhibiting the dendrite growth of Li metal. The PI/PEO/LiTFSI CPE delivers an ionic conductivity of 4.2 × 10-4S cm-1at 60 °C, a wider electrochemical window to 5.4 V, and an excellent thermal stability, which result in the excellent electrochemical performance of LiFePO4full cells assembled with PI/PEO/LiTFSI CPE.

RESUMO

Developing a porous separation membrane that can efficiently separate oil-water emulsions still represents a challenge. In this study, nanofiber membranes with polydopamine clusters polymerized and embedded on the surface were successfully constructed using a solution blow-spinning process. The hierarchical surface structure enhanced the selective wettability, superhydrophilicity in air (≈0°), and underwater oleophobicity (≈160.2°) of the membrane. This membrane can effectively separate oil-water emulsions, achieving an excellent permeation flux (1552 Lm-2 h-1) and high separation efficiency (~99.86%) while operating only under the force of gravity. When the external driving pressure was increased to 20 kPa, the separation efficiency hardly changed (99.81%). However, the permeation flux significantly increased to 5894 Lm-2 h-1. These results show that the as-prepared polydopamine nanocluster-embedded nanofiber membrane has an excellent potential for oily wastewater treatment applications.

RESUMO

The preparation of portable colorimetric biosensor strips is described by combining aptamer-immobilized electrospun nanofiber membranes (A-NFMs) with signal probes (DNA-conjugated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)) for determination of kanamycin (KMC) as a model analyte. The A-NFMs were decorated with complementary single-stranded DNA (cDNA) of KMC aptamer-conjugated AuNPs (cDNA@Au) to get the colorimetric biosensor strips. The constructed biosensor strips showed a significant absorbance decreasing band at 510 nm which induce a visual color change from pink to white when exposed to KMC, with a low detection limit of 2.5 nM (at S/N = 3). The effect is due to disassembling of cDNA@Au from NFMs in the presence of KMC because the aptamer has a higher affinity to KMC than its complementary DNA, which resulted in replacing cDNA@Au with KMC. Satisfactory performance was observed in real sample (drinking water and milk) analysis with a recovery of 98.9-102.2%. The constructed colorimetric biosensor test strips hold great application promise for food safety control. Graphical abstract Schematic representation of biosensor strips for kanamycin detection prepared with the cDNA@Au immobilized aptamer-based cellulose acetate nanofibers.

RESUMO

Pressure sensors have been widely used in electronic wearable devices and medical devices to detect tiny physical movements and mechanical deformation. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate desirable, comfortable wearing, and highly sensitive as well as fast responsive sensors to capture human body physiological signs. Here, a new capacitive flexible pressure sensor that is likely to solve this problem was constructed using thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer rubber (TPU) electrospinning nanofiber membranes as a stretchable substrate with the incorporation of silver nanowires (AgNWs) to build a composite dielectric layer. In addition, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were painted on the TPU membranes as flexible electrodes by screen printing to maintain the flexibility and breathability of the sensors. The flexible pressure sensor could detect tiny body signs; fairly small physical presses and mechanical deformation based on the variation in capacitance due to the synergistic effects of microstructure and easily altered composite permittivity of AgNW/TPU composite dielectric layers. The resultant sensors exhibited high sensitivity (7.24 kPa-1 within the range of 9.0 × 10-3 ~ 0.98 kPa), low detection limit (9.24 Pa), and remarkable breathability as well as fast responsiveness (<55 ms). Moreover, both continuously pressing/releasing cycle over 1000 s and bending over 1000 times did not impair the sensitivity, stability, and durability of this flexible pressure sensor. This proposed strategy combining the elastomer nanofiber membrane and AgNW dopant demonstrates a cost-effective and scalable fabrication of capacitive pressure sensors as a promising application in electronic skins and wearable devices.

RESUMO

Photothermal conversion materials have attracted wide attention due to their efficient utilization of light energy. In this study, a (GO)/Bi2S3-PVDF/TPU composite nanofiber membrane was systematically developed, comprising GO/Bi2S3 nanoparticles (NPs) as a photothermal conversion component and PVDF/TPU composite nanofibers as the substrate. The GO/Bi2S3 NPs were synthesized in a one-step way and the PVDF/TPU nanofibers were obtained from a uniformly mixed co-solution by electrospinning. GO nanoparticles with excellent solar harvesting endow the GO/Bi2S3-PVDF/TPU membrane with favorable photothermal conversion. In addition, the introduction of Bi2S3 NPs further enhances the broadband absorption and photothermal conversion properties of the GO/Bi2S3-PVDF/TPU composite membrane due to its perfect broadband absorption performance and coordination with GO. Finally, the results show that the GO/Bi2S3-PVDF/TPU composite membrane has the highest light absorption rate (about 95%) in the wavelength range of 400-2500 nm. In the 300 s irradiation process, the temperature changes in the GO/Bi2S3-PVDF/TPU composite membrane were the most significant and rapid, and the equilibrium temperature of the same irradiation time was 81 °C. Due to the presence of TPU, the mechanical strength of the composite film was enhanced, which is beneficial for its operational performance. Besides this, the morphology, composition, and thermal property of the membranes were evaluated by corresponding test methods.
