RESUMO

Dual-gate tuning on two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures can provide independent control of the carrier concentration and interlayer electrostatic potential, yielding novel electronic and optical properties. In this paper, by utilizing monolayer graphene as both the top gate and a plasmon wavelength magnifier, the optical properties of bilayer graphene (BLG) under dual-gate are quantitatively investigated by nanoinfrared imaging. The hybrid optical modes in the vertically coupled two-layer system are imaged from scattering-type scanning near-field microscopy (s-SNOM). Moreover, plasmon dispersion behaviors under varied dual-gate tuning are explored and explained well with theoretical ones employing tight binding approximation, which reveals the flexibility in individually manipulating the Fermi energy and bandgap. Especially, electron-hole asymmetry in BLG is verified from experiments. Our studies pave route for quantitative near-field investigation of superlattice, topological boundaries, and other emergent phenomena in graphene-based 2D heterostructures.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional surface polaritons (2DSPs), such as graphene plasmons, exhibit various unusual properties, including electrical tunability and strong spatial confinement with high Q-factor, which can enable tunable photonic devices for deep subwavelength light manipulations. Reflection of plasmons at the graphene's edge plays a critical role in the manipulation of 2DSP and enables their direct visualization in near-field infrared microscopy. However, a quantitative understanding of the edge-reflections, including reflection phases and diffraction effects, has remained elusive. Here, we show theoretically and experimentally that edge-reflection of 2DSP exhibits unusual behaviors due to the presence of the evanescent waves, including an anomalous Goos-Hänchen phase shift as in total internal reflections and an unexpected even-odd peak amplitude oscillation from the wave diffraction at the edge. Our theory is not only valid for plasmons in graphene but also for other 2D polaritons, such as phonon polaritons in ultrathin boron nitride flakes and exciton polariton in two-dimensional semiconductors.

RESUMO

Blood adsorption onto the inside surface of hollow fiber dialysis membranes was investigated by means of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and near-field infrared microscopy (NFIR) in order to evaluate the biocompatibility and permeability of dialysis membranes. TOF-SIMS is useful for the imaging of particular molecules with a high spatial resolution of approximately 100 nm. In contrast, infrared spectra provide quantitative information and NFIR enables analysis with a high spatial resolution of less than 1 µm, which is close to the resolution of TOF-SIMS. A comparison was made of one of the most widely used dialysis membranes made of polysulfone (PSf), that has an asymmetric and inhomogeneous pore structure, and a newly developed asymmetric cellulose triacetate (ATA) membrane that also has an asymmetric pore structure, even though the conventional cellulose triacetate membrane has a symmetric and homogeneous pore structure. As a result, it was demonstrated that blood adsorption on the inside surface of the ATA membrane is more reduced than that on the PSf membrane.
