BACKGROUND: During a field survey of urban flora in Alexandria city in 2019-2022, an interesting species belonging to the Solanaceae was collected from a newly archaeological excavation site and identified as Nicotiana glutinosa L. Many visits were made to the herbaria of Egypt to confirm the species records, but no single record was found. Reviewing the available literature revealed that this tropical American taxon was never recorded in the flora of Egypt. AIMS: The present study was focused on N. glutinosa growth structure and plant macro- and micromorphology. METHODS: Ten sampling sites were covered for N. glutinosa size structure. Plant samples were examined for stem anatomy, leaf, seed, and pollen morphology. RESULTS: The species size structure reveals that the individual size index ranges from 1.33 to 150 cm, while its density ranges from 4 to 273 individuals /100 m-2. N. glutinosa has successfully established itself in one of the archaeological sites in Egypt, showing a "healthy" population with a high degree of size inequality, characterized by a relative majority of the juvenile individuals. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of Alexandria University (ALEX) Faculty of Science, another specimen is processed to make herbarium specimens at the Herbarium of the Botanic Garden (Heneidy et al. collection, deposition number. 5502). CONCLUSIONS: From our observations, N. glutinosa seems to have invasive potential, as it shows characteristics shared by most invasive species that are thought to help in their successful establishment in new habitats. This article emphasizes the importance of monitoring and regularly reporting the threats of alien invasive species to avoid any possible negative impacts on indigenous biodiversity in the future.

RESUMO

Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are vectors of pathogens that affect wildlife and livestock. Understanding the composition and distribution of vector species is crucial for implementing control strategies and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. This study provides a morphological and molecular characterisation of Culicoides caucoliberensis, which represents the first record for Spain, increasing the number of Culicoides species in the country to 85. A total of 213 specimens were collected using Onderstepoort-ultraviolet down-draught light traps on a rocky coastline in the Balearic Islands during two sampling periods in 2022. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C. caucoliberensis forms a monophyletic cluster within the Maritimus group. Host preferences were determined for the first time and showed propensity to feed on the European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis). The vector role of C. caucoliberensis for haemosporidian transmission remains unclear since molecular detection of Haemosporidians (Haemoproteus and Plasmodium) was negative for all the pools of parous and engorged females analysed. This study emphasises the importance of conducting entomofauna studies in lesser-known Mediterranean islet landscapes and highlights the need for research on vectors within the One Health framework.

RESUMO

Boleophthalmus dussumieri is one of the most widely distributed mudskippers and is native to the Persian Gulf in Iran down to the northeast of the Arabian Sea and the coast of India. Nonetheless, the present study is the first to confirm the presence of B. dussumieri in the marine areas of the Mozambique coast. In addition, molecular analysis revealed strong evidence for the existence of two lineages with a high level of nucleotide divergence along the sampled area, revealing a still-neglected taxonomic condition for this lineage/species.

RESUMO

Gobius ater Bellotti, 1888 is the Mediterranean gobiid species whose live appearance has remained unknown the longest since its description. A goby observed in southern France in 2021 is here identified as G. ater based on a diagnosis of morphological characters visible on high-quality underwater photographs. Then, the authors provide the first description of colouration in live G. ater and a species diagnosis based on colouration. This diagnosis allows the authors to validate a previous photographic record, also from France. Reviewing all claims of G. ater, they argue that only seven records are unambiguously valid, including the two photographic records presented here.

During a recent inventory survey of the nematofauna of tea plantation at Zhejiang Province, China, Discocriconemella parasinensis n. sp. was detected in the rhizosphere of Camellia sinensis. The new species can be characterized by having the uninterrupted rounded labial disc, en face view showing rectangular-rounded labial plate without submedian lobes, R = 82.6 (80-86), Rex = 22 (21-23), stylet length of 68.3 (59-76) µm, excretory pore located 1-2 annuli posterior to the esophageal bulb, vulva open, postvulval body elongated conoid, and tail conoid with bilobed terminus. Morphologically, the species shares the same lip-type with D. discolabia, D. mauritiensis, D. mineira, D. perseae, and D. sinensis. Phylogenetic relationships of the new species based on D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S, ITS, and 18S rRNA genes revealed that D. parasinensis n. sp. formed a separated clade from other criconematid species, thereby supporting its status as a new species of the genus. The new species showed close phylogenetic relationships with Criconemoides geraerti.

RESUMO

The pencil cardinal Epigonus denticulatus is a small deep-water fish inhabiting continental slopes usually between 300 and 600 m depth. We report the first record of E. denticulatus in the Azores archipelago, where one specimen was found floating by fisherman off Faial island. Meristic and morphometric characters are in accordance with those reported for the species and molecular analyses further supported species identity. The record of E. denticulatus as a native species in the Azores increases the number of Epigonus species in the region to a total of three.

Information on the taxonomy of ponyfishes (Leiognathidae Gill 1893) from Bangladesh was hitherto inadequate and details of some species were lacking. Based on specimens, the present study reports 12 species of ponyfishes from the coasts of Bangladesh with short descriptions of their diagnostic characters. Six of these species, Aurigequula longispina (Valenciennes 1835), Deveximentum megalolepis (Mochizuki & Hayashi 1989), Equulites leuciscus (Günther 1860), Eubleekeria rapsoni (Munro 1964), Gazza rhombea Kimura, Yamashita & Iwatsuki 2000 and Karalla daura (Cuvier 1829), constitute the first records in Bangladesh. The present specimens of D. megalolepis represent the westernmost distribution of this species in the Indo-Pacific region.

A stunt nematode species, Quinisulcius curvus, recovered from the rhizosphere of sea randa (Guettarda speciosa), is described and characterized herein based on integrative taxonomy. Morphometrics and distribution of all reported populations of Q. curvus are also discussed. The Chinese population of Q. curvus displayed slight variation in stylet length; however, the rest of the characters matches well with the original description. This is the first record of Q. curvus from Hainan, China, and the first molecular characterization for this species. Phylogenetic analysis based on partial 18S, 28S and ITS sequences placed Q. curvus with related stunt nematodes species, but clearly separated from them. The present study expanded the geographic record and provided molecular data on Q. curvus from China.

Two stunt nematode species, Geocenamus brevidens and Quinisulcius capitatus, were recovered from the potato growing regions of southern Alberta, described and characterized based on integrative taxonomy. Morphometrics, distribution, and host associations of both species are discussed. The Canadian populations of both species displayed minor variations in morphometrical characteristics (viz., slightly longer bodies and tails) from the original descriptions. The populations of G. brevidens and Q. capitatus species examined in this study are proposed as standard and reference populations for each respective species until topotype specimens become available and molecularly characterized. Phylogenetic analyses, based on partial 18S, 28S, and ITS sequences, placed both species with related stunt nematode species. The present study updates the taxonomic records of G. brevidens and Q. capitatus from a new location, southern Alberta, Canada, and will aid in the decision whether these stunt nematodes should be included in nematode management programs.

The population of Xiphinema americanum species group was detected from the soil surronding the roots of peach (Prunus persica) during a survey of plant-parasitic nematodes in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. From the results of the morphological study, the species was identified as X. diffusum. Morphometrics of X. diffusum generally agree with those of the type species and the topotype specimens. Molecular analysis of 18S rDNA of X. diffusum from Pakistan indicated two nucleotide differences and 99 % similarity with the Chinese (AM086669) and the Australian (AM086685) population of X. diffusum. Phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA placed the Pakistanis population close to X. diffusum from China and Australia. This species is reported for the first time from Pakistan.

A population of Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae), a vector of chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, and Zika and West Nile viruses, has been detected in Windsor, Ontario, Canada from 2016 onwards. Here, we describe its seasonal distribution, as well as the various aquatic habitats from which this species was collected and its larval co-habitation. We collected immatures from tires, treeholes, extruded polystyrene foam containers, discarded plastic cups, old recycling bins and oviposition traps. Aedes albopictus larvae were collected with Aedes japonicus (Theobald), Anopheles punctipennis (Say), Culex pipiens Linnaeus, Ochlerotatus hendersoni (Cockerell), Ochlerotatus triseriatus (Say) and Orthopodomyia signifera (Coquillett). Adult female and male specimens were collected from Biogents sentinel traps (Biogents AG, Regensburg, Germany), as well as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention miniature light traps (CDC, Atlanta, GA, U.S.A.), and also as they alighted on the investigators. Peak adult collections occurred in September during epidemiological week 37. We also collected Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus), a new record for Canada, in 2016 and from two new collection sites in 2017. The 2017 collections were 3.5 km north and 19.4 km south of the index site. The present study adds to the increasing number of studies reporting range expansions of these mosquito species.

RESUMO

We report a bump-head sunfish Mola alexandrini (120-130 cm estimated total length) photographed from a manned submersible at a depth of 220 m off Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, in May 2004. Mola alexandrini is often misidentified as the ocean sunfish Mola mola. This individual represented three records for this species: first record by a manned submersible, second record from the mesopelagic zone in the north-west Pacific Ocean and a new distributional record from Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.

During a nematode biodiversity survey in Hainan Province, China, Aphelenchus yinyuensis n. sp. was detected in the rhizosphere of Terminalia sp. It is characterized by medium-sized a body of adult nematodes, i.e. 793 (639-877) µm and 756 (647-863) µm for females and males, respectively, with low, rounded, not offset lip region. The lateral field has 10 incisures. The excretory pore is located posterior to the nerve ring. The vagina is not sclerotised and the vulva has simple lips without a flap. The PUS is well developed and forms ca 45 to 83% of the vulva to anus distance. Female tail is straight, cylindrical, ca 2.7 times longer than anal body diam, tail tip broad, and bluntly rounded. Males have four pairs of caudal papillae and spicule 28.7 (25.8-32.3) µm long in the chord and well developed bursa, extending to the tail tip. 18S and 28S rRNA phylogenetic analyses were performed for the new species, and the ITS analysis was not performed due to low posterior probability support. Phylogenetically, the new species grouped with Aphelenchus avenae and this is the first new Aphelenchus species ever described from China.

The dagger nematodes of the longidorids can cause diseases of various agronomic and horticultural crops, and are consisted of more than 260 valid species. In a forest survey of ecotypes of longidorid nematodes, from the root zone soil of Brant's oak, (Quercus brantii Lindl.) and hawthorn (Crataegus aronia L.) trees, three species of Xiphinema americanum group namely Xiphinema pachtaicum, X. oxycaudatum and X. plesiopachtaicum were collected and studied based on their morphological and morphometric characters. X. pachtaicum is prevalent Xiphinema species in Iran. In this paper additional data for X. oxycaudatum and X. plesiopachtaicum species are presented. X. plesiopachtaicum is a new record for nematode fauna of Iran.

RESUMO

In 2011, a male pristiophorid was caught by a prawn trawler north east of Cape Moreton, Queensland, Australia. Molecular analyses confirmed the specimen to be the common sawshark Pristiophorus cirratus. Historical catch data indicate the occurrence of the species in the region but this is the first verified record of P. cirratus occurring in the waters of southern Queensland. Together, these records extend the recognised northern limit of P. cirratus by c. 500 km, which suggests that further investigation of its distribution is warranted.

RESUMO

This study is the first record of a whale shark Rhincodon typus in Iraqi waters and the second record from the Arabian (Persian) Gulf portion of the north-west Indian Ocean. The stranding and sighting events were documented by photos of three individuals: the stranded specimen was 6.5 m total length (LT ) and the free-swimming individuals were c. 1-2 and 2-3 m LT respectively. An appeal is made for Iraqi policy makers to participate in regional and international organizations for the conservation of this endangered species.

Two populations of Paratylenchus lepidus and P. minor were detected in the rhizosphere of Elaeocarpus sp. and Chinese red pine from Taizhou and Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Previously, P. lepidus has been reported from China whereas P. minor was originally described from India decades ago in the rhizosphere of peach but was never reported thereafter. In this study, both species were characterized morphologically and molecularly coupled with SEM observations. Morphologically, both species have four incisures in the lateral field, vulval present (SEM observations), stylet less than 30 µm long and cephalic region without submedian lobes. Phylogenetically, both species grouped with paratylenchid species having short stylets. Both species can be differentiated from each other by the shape of lip region (rounded in P. lepidus and narrow truncated in P. minor) and tail terminus (pointed in P. lepidus and a broadly rounded in P. minor) and several morphomemtrical values.The study provided an updated description of P. lepidus and P. minor and a first record of P. minor from China. In addition, both species are the first paratylenchid species recorded from Elaeocarpus sp. and Pinus tabuliformis, respectively.

By the fourth survey of Chinese medicinal resources, new medicinal plants records of 2 genera and 5 species were reported in Tibet. They are two genera Rhynchoglossum and Asteropyrum, and five species including Rh. obliquum, A. peltatum, Urena repanda, Schefflera khasiana and Mimulus tenellus. All the voucher specimens are preserved in Herbarium of Tibet Agriculture and Animal Husbandry University.

Despite studies suggesting that most seaweeds are poor dispersers, many red algal species are reported to have circumglobal distributions. Such distributions have mostly been based on morphological identifications, but molecular data have revealed a range of issues with morphologically defined species boundaries. Consequently, the real distribution of such reportedly circumglobal species must be questioned. In this study, we analyzed molecular data sets (rbcL gene) of nine species in the Rhodomelaceae for which samples were available from widely spaced geographical locations. Three overall patterns were identified: (i) species showing strong phylogeographic structure (i.e., phylogenetic similarity correlates with geographical provenance), often to the point that populations from different locations could be considered as different species (Lophosiphonia obscura, Ophidocladus simpliciusculus, Polysiphonia villum, and Xiphosiphonia pinnulata); (ii) species with a broad distribution that is explained, in part, by putative human-mediated transport (Symphyocladia dendroidea and Polysiphonia devoniensis); and (iii) non-monophyletic complexes of cryptic species, most with a more restricted distribution than previously thought (Herposiphonia tenella, Symphyocladia dendroidea, and the Xiphosiphonia pennata complex that includes the species Xiphosiphonia pinnulata and Symphyocladia spinifera). This study shows that widely distributed species are the exception in marine red algae, unless they have been spread by humans.

RESUMO

Occurrence of multiple whitetip reef sharks Triaenodon obesus in the Atlantic Ocean is reported for the first time from near a sunken ferry off the Paraná coast in south-eastern Brazil. This occurrence is hypothesized to have been caused by either a human introduction or a remarkably long oceanic displacement.
