RESUMO

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel) reviewed the safety of 8 palm tree (Euterpe edulis (juçara) and Euterpe oleracea (açaí))-derived ingredients as used in cosmetic products; these ingredients are reported to function mostly as skin conditioning agents. The Panel reviewed relevant data relating to the safety of these ingredients in cosmetic formulations. Industry should continue to use good manufacturing practices to limit impurities. The Panel concluded that palm tree (açaí and juçara)-derived ingredients are safe in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration described in this safety assessment.

BACKGROUND: Edible palm hearts (EPH), known as palmito, chonta or swamp cabbage in America or umbut in Malaysia, is a type of vegetable harvested from palm tree species. EPH is firm and smooth and described as having a flavor resembling artichoke. It has underlying prebiotic potential that selectively stimulates the growth and activity of beneficial colonic microbiota, thus enhancing the host's health. This study is the first to present results of EPH from local species such as oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), sago palm (Metroxylon sagu) and coconut (Cocos nucifera) using in vitro colonic fermentation with human fecal slurry. Samples obtained at 0, 6, 12 and 24 h were evaluated by bacterial enumeration using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). RESULTS: All EPH samples revealed induction effects towards Bifidobacterium spp., Lactobacillus-Enterococcus and Bacteroidaceae/Prevotellaceae populations similar to those in inulin fermentation. A significant decrease (P ≤ 0.05) in pathogenic Clostridium histolyticum group was observed in the response of raw sago palm hearts. In general, all samples stimulate the production of SCFA. Particularly in the colonic fermentation of sago palm heart, acetate and propionate revealed the highest concentrations of 286.18 and 284.83 mmol L-1 in raw and cooked form, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that edible palm hearts can be a potential prebiotic ingredient that promotes human gastrointestinal health, as well as discovering a new direction towards an alternative source of functional foods. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The chemical composition of palm heart (cultivar Piarom) and solubility kinetics of its protein was investigated under different salt concentrations and pHs. Palm heart protein isolate (PHPI) was prepared using alkaline extraction and acidic precipitation and its functional properties (emulsifying properties and emulsion stability, foam capacity, and water holding and fat absorption capacity) and thermal properties were determined. It was revealed that palm heart had high nutritional value and contains high protein content. By increasing pH up to 3, solubility was decreased and then significantly increased by elevating pH to 9 (p < 0.05). Salt addition significantly decreased palm heart protein (PHP) solubility. Considering solubility kinetics, pH 9 and salt concentration of 0.25 M was determined as the best protein extraction condition. Denaturation temperature and enthalpy changes of PHPI were 108.63 °C and 143.1 J/g; suggesting high thermal stability of this product. Regarding its suitable functional, physicochemical and thermal properties, PHP can be considered as an ideal substitution for animal protein sources in the food industry.

The consumption of locally nutrient-rich edible plants in rural areas can be used to satisfy the dietary diversity of pregnant women. Date palm is one of the wild edible plants in different parts of the world. Studies on wild edible plants in Ethiopia cover only about 5 % of the country's districts. Furthermore, the nutrient composition of the palm heart of Phoenix reclinata is not yet investigated as it is commonly consumed by indigenous people in western Ethiopia. The utilization of such plants requires strong policy support based on scientific evidence to maintain the nutrition security of pregnant women. Homogeneous samples of 1000 grams (g) of palm hearts were collected randomly. The macronutrient contents were determined using standard methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC, 2000). The flame Photometric method was used for potassium and sodium determination. The carbohydrate concentration (g/100 g) was 78⋅2. It covers approximately 78⋅5 % of the total daily Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). In line with this, the concentrations of minerals such as potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+), per milligram (mg/100 g) of the sample were 1962⋅3 and 7⋅9, respectively. The palm heart of Phoenix reclinata has many nutritional values and is important for pregnant women. Its nutrient composition is comparable with different staple foods of the country and can contribute to household food security in rural communities.

The peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth) is a palm tree native to the Amazon region, with plantations expanding to the Brazilian Southwest and South regions. This work is a critical review of historical, botanical, social, environmental, and nutritional aspects of edible and nonedible parts of the plant. In Brazil, the importance of the cultivation of B. gasipaes to produce palm heart has grown considerably, due to its advantages in relation to other palm species, such as precocity, rusticity and tillering. The last one is especially important, as it makes the exploitation of peach palm hearts, contrary to what happens with other palm tree species, a non-predatory practice. Of special interest are the recent efforts aiming at the valorization of the fruit as a source of carotenoids and starch. Further developments indicate that the B. gasipaes lignocellulosic wastes hold great potential for being upcycled into valuable biotechnological products such as prebiotics, enzymes, cellulose nanofibrils and high fiber flours. Clean technologies are protagonists of the recovery processes, ensuring the closure of the product's life cycle in a "green" way. Future research should focus on expanding and making the recovery processes economically viable, which would be of great importance for stimulating the peach palm production chain.

BACKGROUND: We are experiencing a global crisis in conservation, which has led to the prioritization of targets, such as nations, regions, and animal groups, which are necessary while resources are disputed. Brazil is a priority not only because of its megadiversity, high rates of endemism, and frequent descriptions of new species but also because of its high levels of deforestation. Among the species groups prioritized for conservation is the anurans (Amphibia: Anura), the population of which is severely declining. One group of anurans is the genus Brachycephalus, which includes 37 endemic species in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Some of these species have highly restricted distributions (<100 ha). Thirty new species have been described since 2000, and 55.3% of all species are threatened with extinction. Brachycephalus tridactylus was only recently described and remains restricted to its type locality. Because of its reduced geographical distribution (0.41 km2), it has been proposed to be considered as Vulnerable. The objective of this study is to reevaluate the conservation status of Brachycephalus tridactylus and propose conservation measures. METHODS: We searched for new populations during 2016-2020, evaluated in loco impacts and potential impacts on the species' population, and performed an analysis of the density of this population and estimated its size. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria were used to assess the conservation status of the species. RESULTS: We recorded the species in seven new localities (from 715-1,140 m above sea level) in the state of São Paulo up to 33 km from the type locality of the species (in state of Paraná). We estimated the area of occupancy as 148.44 km2, densities as one calling male per 4.05 m2 and 130.00 m2, and a total population size of 4,429,722 adult individuals. Based on our finding, we proposed three lines of management: (1) formation of fire brigades, (2) management of residents' mules in the conservation unit and surrounding areas, and (3) management of degraded areas. We recommend changing the species' conservation status from Vulnerable to Endangered because of its fragmented distribution and decline in the area of occupancy and in the quality of its habitat. Our results have expanded the species previous geographic distribution and delimited areas without previous records. Our estimates of population density and size are in accordance with those verified for congeners. The conservation of this species benefits the environments and other species that inhabit them, being, therefore, strategic for receiving conservation actions that will spread throughout the ecosystem.

The data are supporting the research article "Effects of neighborhood on pollination and seed dispersal of a threatened palm" (Santos et al., 2018). We recorded through focal observation mutualistic interactions with floral and frugivorous visitors and 11 individuals of the threatened Euterpe edulis palm in Brazil. We thus provide two datasets, one about interactions with floral visitors (Pollination data.xlsx) and other about interactions with frugivorous visitors (Seed dispersal data.xlsx). Both datasets are structured in eight spreadsheets: Two about observed interactions among Euterpe edulis palm and floral and frugivorous visitors; two response variables (frequency and assembly composition); four predictor variables (conspecific aggregation, basal area, number of rachillae/fruits, flower in anthesis/ripe fruits). We also report here sampling completeness measured from rarefaction of unique interactions versus interaction events recorded.

BACKGROUND: Traditional knowledge (TK) has enabled communities to adapt to changes in life conditions over centuries. However, this local context is being dramatically affected by recent changes through globalization and modernization of societies. In this paper we seek to identify socio-economic factors that are related to the knowledge and use of two palm species in mestizo and indigenous communities in the Amazonian of Peru and Bolivia. Both species are known in the region under the main vernacular name of Asaí, and are source of two highly commercialized resources: palm-hearts and fruits. Euterpe precatoria Mart. is native to the region whereas E. oleracea Mart. is being introduced for the use of both resources. METHODS: We compare TK about the two Euterpe species in both countries in relation to 14 socioeconomic factors in seven use categories. We performed a Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to elucidate the influence of each socioeconomic factor on the overall palm knowledge or on individual use categories. RESULTS: In the two countries, we found that mestizos, speaking only Spanish, and migrants in the same ecoregion, knew more uses in all use categories for E. precatoria than for E. oleracea, even in use categories such as Medicinal and veterinary and Construction, for which indigenous participants had more uses in case of other species. In Peru, the use of E. precatoria was higher among participants with greater wealth, which could be related to the commercial importance that both the fruits and the palm-hearts have had in the markets of the region. In contrast, in Bolivia, although some income generation from Euterpe sp. was observed, the use of E. precatoria was much more homogeneously distributed. The use of E. oleracea in Bolivia is recent, and although its most important uses are related to the consumption of fruits and palm-hearts (Human food), it is now being slowly used for Medicinal and Construction purposes, similar to E. precatoria. CONCLUSIONS: The use of each of the species forms part of divergent strategies in people's livelihoods. We show that integration into a market economy does not necessarily erode TK, but can rather stimulate knowledge acquisition and transmission of knowledge, and helps to understand the role and potential of these products to contribute to the livelihoods of households.

ABSTRACT: The peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) is a palm tree that produces palm heart originated of Amazonia with economic, social and environmental sustainability. To obtain improved cultivars it is necessary the evaluation and selection of genotypes with characteristics that support producers, manufacturing and consumers. In this context, the objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for palm heart production traits of peach palm considering half sibs progenies. Twenty progenies of Putumayo macrocarpa race were evaluated in seven cultivation cycles. The experiment was designed in complete randomized blocks, with 40 repetitions and one plant per plot. The genetic parameters were estimated by REML/BLUP methodology. Low genetic variability was observed in the population, possibly due to the narrow genetic base from original population. However, considering the significant genetic effect and the progeny mean heritability, the selection performed between progenies is more efficient than individual selection. The high number of measurements required for most of the evaluated characters becomes impractical in peach palm breeding programs. The number of palm heart per plant can be used to perform indirect selection for total production of palm heart.


RESUMO: A pupunheira (Bactris gasipaes) é uma palmeira produtora de palmito oriunda da Amazônia, que apresenta sustentabilidade econômica, social e ambiental. Para a obtenção de cultivares melhoradas é necessário a avaliação e seleção de genótipos com características que atendam produtores, processadores e consumidores. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar parâmetros genéticos para os caracteres de produção de palmito de pupunha considerando progênies de meio-irmãos. Foram avaliadas 20 progênies da raça macrocarpa Putumayo em sete ciclos de cultivo. O experimento foi delineado em blocos completos ao acaso, com 40 repetições e uma planta por parcela. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados segundo metodologia REML/BLUP. Baixa variabilidade foi observada na população de estudo, possivelmente devido à estreita base genética da população original. Contudo, considerando o efeito genético significativo e as herdabilidades médias de progênie, a seleção praticada entre progênies é mais eficiente que a seleção individual. O grande número de medições necessárias para a maioria dos caracteres avaliados torna-se impraticável em programas de melhoramento de pupunheira. O número de palmitos por planta pode ser utilizado na seleção indireta para produção total de palmito.

No Brasil, diversos tipos de palmeiras nativas podem fornecer palmito de boa qualidade, dentre elas destaca-se a guarirobeira (Syagrus oleracea (Mart.) J. Becc.), pelo palmito de sabor diferenciado e grande aceitação na região do Cerrado. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar as características do palmito de guariroba, quanto à umidade, resíduo mineral fixo, lipídios totais, proteínas, glicídios redutores e não-redutores, fibras totais, valor calórico, ácido ascórbico, compostos fenólicos, pH e minerais (potássio, fósforo, cálcio, sódio e ferro), verificando o efeito do processamento (branqueamento, acidificação e congelamento) no produto a ser comercializado congelado. Os valores médios diferiram significativamente (P<0,05) entre as amostras in natura e congeladas, respectivamente, para umidade 87,68 e 90,56g 100g-1, cinzas 0,96 e 0,73g 100g-1 e lipídios 0,44 e 0,24g 100g-1, além de ocorrer diminuição do valor energético de 11,64 para 9,97kcal 100g-1 de amostra integral. O uso do ácido cítrico no processamento do palmito guariroba reduziu o pH de 5,8 para 4,5 e foi eficiente para evitar seu escurecimento. O palmito guariroba congelado manteve-se como fonte de fibras e de compostos fenólicos, além de oferecer alto teor de vitamina C e de ferro.


In Brazil many kinds of native palms can provide hearth palm of good quality and among them stands out the guarirobeira (Syagrus oleracea (Mart.) J. Becc.), which has different flavor and great acceptance in the Cerrado region. The objective of this research was to determine the characteristics of guariroba palm heart, with relationship to the moisture, ash, total lipids, proteins, reducer and no-reducer sugars, acidity, ascorbic acid, total phenol, pH, total fiber and iron, phosphorus, calcium, sodium and potassium minerals. It was also verified the effect of processing (blanching, acidification and freezing) in the frozen product. Significant differences (P<0.05) was noted among average values found in frozen and raw samples, with contents (g 100g-1) respectively, for moisture, of 87.68 and 90.56; ash, 0.96 and 0.73; and lipids, 0.44 and 0.24; besides the occurrence of decreasing energy value from 11.64 to 9.97kcal 100g-1 in the integral sample. The citric acid use in the processing of guariroba palm heart decreased the pH of 5.8 to 4.5, and was efficient for avoid browning. The guariroba palm heart still be a good source of e fiber and total phenol after freezing, in addition to offer high contents of vitamin C and iron mineral.
